Hi all, new Nexus 7 user here! I'm really liking this device and its definitely a keeper. So far, I think I've dodged most of the known issues such as screen lift, dead line of pixels, sound issues, etc.
One thing I'm noticing, or maybe I'm paranoid, is that I "feel" my battery is draining somewhat fast (compared to my iPad 2).
I'm not running a lot of widgets, only a clock widget, weather widget, and settings toggle widget. Also have sound boost and terminal, which I think are also running since they're always shown in the notifications center. I can't provide a screenshot since I'm new and it won't let me, but here are the stats:
28% and Discharging
1d 12h 7m 30s on Battery with screen taking up 77% (~33% brightness I think, the screen is really bright by the way!)
Time On (Screen) 4h 35m 1s
Basically all my use has been web browsing, via Chrome (tilt thing turned off) and Dolphin HD, and maybe 20 minutes of light gaming. I don't have Push Email turned on, its on Manual.
Anyway, if anyone could provide any insight as to whether my battery performance is on par or not, I'd really appreciate it!
Close terminal when you're not using it.
I get about 6 hours screen on time. Your battery seems fine, idle time with wifi also uses battery so by the time it runs out you'll have like 5 and a half hours plus the idle time. About normal.

Hi, thanks for your reply! I have terminal on because I'm currently doing the manual fix for smartdimmer issue. I'm not sure if turning off terminal would kill the fix, I'll go and tweak around a bit.
I just don't understand how various review sites are saying it lasts 9+ hours though, seems a bit out of reach for me currently.
It can definitely last that long with use, some users have reported that. Likewise, don't think anything is wrong with your device.

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I've seen from the battery post various users posting very high battery life, and it all made me very shiny-eyed! Haha. Anywho, I guess I should just go and enjoy this thing instead of being all OCD.
I'm actually getting a little bit worse than that myself, so I wouldn't be alarmed at all
And this is my 3rd Nexus 7 and all of them have had similar battery life to yours.
Thanks for the reply. Feeling much more confident now.
I am using auto brightness and my room condition is usually on darker side these days so I am getting very good screen times although I have turn of prism feature of Tegra 3 which used to cause over exposed colors during and after video play back. Turning off prism does hurt battery a bit but I am still getting very good screen times using xda app, chrome and YouTube. It might be the reason that mostly my room is on darker side and I am on auto brightness and the screen does not have to pump high brightness all the time rather only when required.
I am attaching some photos and in this particular instance I noticed that I didn't use my nexus 7 for 10-11 hours after fully charged and of course unplugged from charger. There was zero drop in battery percentage for those 10-11 hours although the screen time was around 23 mins during that time because of apps refreshing etc which you can also see from screen shots. It seems that very easily I am going to get 8+ screen time which is very impressive of course when I play games in between then it goes down to 5-6 hours screen time. This is the first instance where I have not played any games. People do say the battery consumption is not linear but so far it is relatively linear for me.

I do get full bars of WiFi and I don't have any problem with WiFi which some people are reporting and this does play and bigger role that is when your WiFi signal is weak then your tablet has to use more juice out of battery in order to make an effort to enhance the signal strength. I am sitting 15 feet from router most of the time.

I noticed this. Usually the screen uses like 80% of the power after I used the phone for 5 minutes. This is after a night of my phone doing nothing and me playing around with it for 10 minutes or so. The phone idle and cell standby are really really high for some reason.
I did a reset of my battery stats but this didn't do anything.
When I was running stock sense with 2.2 it never gave me this result. Those two were always maybe around 2 or 3% or so so after a full day of use. It's weird.
Anyone else dealing with this?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
5 to ten minutes isn't really an accurate capture, have you given it a full day and then checked the stats? After five minutes it completely stands to reason that in that five minutes the display used 80% of the overall draw that happened during that span, does that make sense?
Same thing here. Used my phone for the whole day and the Mobile Standby used up like 40% of the battery. Mind you, there was a trip today so i used it for pretty much anything from playing games to downloading market apps and listening to music.
With the stock 2.2.1 Sense my display used up 80-90% of the battery all the time.
^Exactly. It makes much more sense that the display uses the most energy by far.
Half a day later.
Still seems weird to me.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
It doesn't make sense at all. This is after almost a full day of usage. I've been calling, surfing and playing games on my phone.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Battery almost empty stats.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I kinda figured it out. I just switched to use only 2G networks and now Mobile standby uses only ~35% of the battery. That's still too high, though.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I'm gonna try that on my next charge. 30% is still very high though, it should be less than 5% or so I think.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Can the radio affect the battery usage? If so, then shouldn't flashing some other one yield different results?
I have similar issues with cell standby being unusually high. My phone battery only drains poorly in one location (work) however. It will go from 98% to 15% by about lunch time even though I haven't used it. Disabling cellular data and wifi does nothing to improve it. Only airplane mode seems to stop this behavior. I have wiped battery stats and conditioned the battery and am at a loss on how else to troubleshoot this problem.
Removing WIFI calling and GanOptimizer using TI Backup has improved my battery noticeably thus far. Will need to further test over the next day to see if this was the cause of my battery drain. Here is the post I found concerning these two apps. It seems GanOptimizer puts WIFI in high performance mode. This happens when not using WIFI Calling (think you had to have used it once and then turned it off). My thoughts are that it causes WIFI to not sleep (ignoring the policy in the process) and leads to excessive battery drain as WIFI is basically running full power constantly.
i think how it work for the rightway?
Hmm... I dunno. There seems to be something weird going on with the reporting itself. This is after another day of use. I used navigation for maybe 3 minutes or so. When I look at the detailled view of that, it shows that it didn't keep the gps on or anything. It just doesn't make sense at all. I did many other things as well. Calling, texting, browsing, youtube etc. None of that is in that list.
A lot of things just don't show up in the list for some reason. Notice the display isn't even in there?
This is a fresh install that's 3 days old or so and. I don't have battery management apps or app killers installed.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Well so much for an improvement. Came to work with battery @ 96% and two hours later it was at 69%. Android System now is apparently consuming the most with Cell Standby a close second. Think it is time for a phone wipe and slow installation of apps one by one to find out what is causing such excessive drain.
Well it seems like the error is in the reporting itself. The stats don't make sense at all, but my battery life is a lot better than when I was running stock sense.
On a side note, oh what a happy day today!
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I've been noticing the same odd battery usage on cm7.0.3. the past few days, getting 32% for cell standby and 25% phone idle :S. I've never really had usage this high for any rom except cm7, usually its my display around 80%.
I'm still getting average battery life (~18hrs on a charge) but nothing like the amazing battery life with rmk's g-lite 1.0.2.
Fed up with the moans about battery life. Yes there are issues but not to the extent that some people suggest.

This is from a normal usage of my phone. As you can see from the graph the last few hours were me connected to wi-fi constantly, tweeting, fiddling and browsing forums. Yes a quick drain but this is a phone!
My point of this post is compare this to tablets and netbooks. The majority last 6 hours, tops. The SGS II is a dual core, amoled phone. It was always going to be a beast on the battery. However if you use it wisely, ie only have Wi-Fi on when necessary, the phone lasts as this phone should.
It out performs most tablets and for the relative size of both screen and battery I would say that's hugely impressive.
Looking forward to your comments.

Your post is refreshing because of the following:
1) Clearly shows the display is the biggest drainer of battery. Anything else means you simply didn't setup your phone right or have some rogue app chewing stuff up.
2) You're not going bonkers with "OMFG my phone only lost 0% over 4 hours" and then post a graph that shows the screen was on for 2 seconds. Uh, well... duh! Completely stupid and pointless, glad your graph actually reflects real usage and battery drain.

now im gonna say this,
you people really shouldnt compare battery time like tht. Its the screen on time you should compare!! its far more accurate than this. i can get around 3h of constat use and connected to wifi. this is screen on time.
what's average screen time in hours for most users? i've been reading about 4 hours plus or minus 1. 8 hours is unreasonable on one charge? i like to read books so i am wondering about this. i highly anticipate this phone but the n9 kind of looks hot too if the rumor is true alien dalvik allows android apps on meego.
So what? You kinda never used your phone. Surf the internet connected via 3g and come back to tell me
So you use your phone less than my grandma and hardly get two days out of the battery?
Great, that's nothing to be proud of.
With this usage my Omnia7 lasted for a week but the SGSII drains harder than my kitchen sink.
I noticed light consumes unusually lot of power too .. I recommend not using it as torch. White screen works just as fine for me (in total darkness). It seems they put in even stronger LED then in previous models .. and it better be used just for the moment as photographic flash. Battery voltage drops significantly .. and it slowly returns after the LED is turned off .. which means it's really strained a lot.
I bet i can get 2 days of battery in the way you used your phone. Screen was rarely on, so you just showed us that you can get a day and a half of stand-by.
At the risk of being accused of grandma phone usage im actually fairly happy.. The wifi sharing thing is a ***** so axed that.

1.Wifi/Data full time on
2.Autosync
3.Facebook/Twitter APW updates 15 minutes
4.Live wall paper (Galaxy)
5.Go Launcher
6.~1hr browsing+Youtube
7.Few calls
8.Display mode dynamic(it lasts longer with other modes)
i tried multiple picture wallpaper but the battery went flat in 12 hrs!
also any data monitoring widgets(i tried onavo) consumes a lot
other live wallpapers too
i guess we can post own experience to help get the max out of Note battery without compromising functionality

Even i was using note same as u, 48 hours on Stock ROM.
My display is always the biggest drain, you mustn't be using your phone much, mine normally last about 15-20 hours.between 3-5 hours of screen on time depending on brightness and what I'm doing.

I am seriously starting to wonder if there isn't some sort of "Hypermiling" to get that battery life number up higher. Many of these 3-5 day numbers are a little unrealistic and give a false sense of what the everyday battery life is for most people. That being said mine seems to only barely make it through a day, though for 8 hours I'm using my bluetooth headphones to listen to audiobooks/music; that's a serious battery drain. I also need to figure out why my battery life has dropped ever since I moved from the stock rom to the various custom builds...
One day and 10 hours, running on EDGE on T-Mobile. Before I plugged it in, it was at 27% with 4 hours and 30 minutes of screen on time.
Good enough for me. I'm running stock GB just with root and CWM.

It's possible. You just don't use the device you paid $650 for and keep it as a nice looking brick on your desk. I can probably pull off 30 days in airplane mode and by keeping it in the freezer.
If I use it as a phone, and use my tab for browsing etc at home I've had it last 4+ days (with email being checked twice a day and a few voice calls here and there.)
If I use it like a tablet AND phone, like I do most of the time, then I get 2/3 days between charges. I don't do much gaming on it though, just use it for Web browsing and email mainly and have the screen brightness on MIN unless I'm out in the bright sun.
I'm on latest stock UK ROM and turn Wifi of whenever I'm not using it.
(having said that when Angry Birds Space came out I needed a re-charge after 1 day! And nearly a divorce lawyer too.)
I'm averaging about 9-10 hours :-/
Stock ROM
As of right now, I am at 52% battery left with screen on at 2 1/2 hours and almost 10 hours off the charger. I am on the stock ROM but rooted. I am happy with the battery life on this phone considering I came from a Samsung Epic 4G and it would have been long dead with 2 1/2 hours of screen time on.

Just wondering if anyone has tried running their One M8 in High Performance Mode 24/7. I noticed that cores are still disabled and clocked down when not in use while High Performance Mode is enabled, so I don't think it will use as much battery as everyone thinks. The governor just seems to be more aggressive at clocking up under load. I'm guessing 30 minutes to an hour less screen on time. I enjoy the smoother scrolling in some apps that it provides, so I'm going to try keeping it on and see how my battery life is.
Thoughts? Anyone attempted this before?
Unless you don't play any games or benchmark the phone you shouldn't really get some benefits of that...also questions should be placed in Q&A !
This mode is just meant to be used for games and benchmarks
But I do see the benefits of it without playing games or running benchmarks... Scrolling in some apps is noticeably smoother.
And I was hoping for more of a discussion, not just an answer, as I will post my findings and would like to hear the thoughts and findings of others.

If your usage is not heavy, neither mode should matter much.

All around the web I have seen people advising not to use High Performance Mode for anything but benchmarks because it uses a lot of battery, but it looks like those statements are all completely false. It uses a little more battery, but not a lot more, and it's certainly feasable to leave High Performance Mode enabled all the time. I still got great battery life.
On to the results. Nearly 17 hours on battery, with 7 hours of screen on time. More setup details below.
-Completely stock Sense 6, 4.4.3 (2.22.1540.3). No root, no custom kernel.
-Google Now enabled
-"Ok Google" from any screen enabled
-Blinkfeed enabled (with FB, Twitter, G+, and Insta as sources)
-GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi always on
-Pebble smartwatch connected
-Auto brightness set to 50%
-Spent most of the day on Wi-Fi, except for when I went out for about an hour
I used my phone a lot more than I would in a typical day to deplete the battery and get some results, so it will definitely last me more than a full day in High Performance Mode with my normal usage.
Interesting. Going to try this myself. I'm not a HEAVY user, so I'll leave it always on for now and see how it affects battery.

I'm pretty sure fast for you is slow for everyone else considering you're like the battery whisperer or something with your 10 hour screen on times.
This is with a custom rom, after this first test, I turned off wifi scanning.
and put battery saving from 15 % to turn on at 25%, also, I set the screen to use half the pixels while on battery saving, I'm hoping to reach around 5 hours SoT with around 24 hours of standby.
Should be doable?

this is taken today, i am on stock with last sec patch, bat saver is set down from 15% to 5% but its just for disabling led to turn on, i never use battery saver.
Yeah, about normal SoT, but it depends on what apps you use, what number of them are running in the background etc. To me both of OP and Nikola_zr are pretty much standard SoT and overall battery life.
I was able to get this out of it, I'm quite happy.
As you can see I'm a heavy youtube user, I watch videos while I'm answering messages, or surfing Facebook.

To be fair the app itself isn't really much of an impact, but the screen being on during that app. YouTube won't actually use much because we have a dedicated video decoder hardware.
You would find that 90%+ of that YouTube usage is screen on time while YT was in foreground.

If you're in oreo, this battery life is pretty normal. Why? There's only 4h on screen time, whereas Android oreo has (in this moment) the more enhanced deep sleep, being off-screen almost doesn't take battery life. This is why you got 23h withou charging.
Check out what I think a good battery life is like:

Agreed. Facebook app is a huge baterry drainer (trust me, I had a Zenfone 5, I NEEDED TO BACKUP BATTERY lol). So, since Zenfone I found out that stock Facebook app eat a bunch of battery (even if backgrounding), I started to use Web version and now FBLite wich does pretty much the same as the stock FB app, but almost without draining battery.
Tip: use FBlite and be happy

FB uses a lot on low RAM devices I've found, but on Mi A1 it doesn't seem like too much. If you turn off all notifications and video autoplay, anyway.
I've tried all the alternative FB clients and they're pretty crap compared to official app. None of them remember the news feed position you're at if you go in to comment on something, for example. It always reloads.
