Rooting vs Play Store - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I remember when I rooted my HTC One S, I lost access to the Play Store Movies. I would really like to root, ROM and OC my new Nexus 7 but I like using certain features of the play store with this. I didn't use any of it with my phone and I don't use most of it with this but, if I root and get blocked from the magazines part of the play store, the part I use the most, I'd be a bit upset.
If I root it, what will I lose access to if anything?

I think they stopped rooting effecting movies playing, that's all I know.

Thats good to know. So there are no negative effects for rooting anymore. Hope this helps the OP.
So get to it!

Nope. No negative effects disregarding the voided warranty and possibility of bricking. Btw. Most bricks can be easily fixed. Even hard bricks
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

as for voiding the warranty that does not matter, as all these root kits can flash back to stock rom and relock the bootloader so no one can tell that you hacked it and makes it safe to return/exchange

Root that mamma jamma!

My rooted nexus and transformer have no problems playing play store movies. My razr though still won't play them. If i try to pin for offline it says not available on rooted devices.

Thanks everyone! Root, ROM and OC here I come!

Kindle Fire UK Root & Update?

Hi
I have been reading this forum today and haven't managed to find an answer that is 100% confirmed.
I am close to buying a Kindle Fire and live in the UK.
If I buy it can I unlock it with the Boritto unlock if it is version 6.2.2 or does it only work if I was in the US? I read something that suggests I need to be in the US to do this.
Also, is there a proven way for me to block Amazon from forcing an update to the device?
Many thanks

Assuming there is nothing stopping you from downloading burrito root I can't imagine what location would have to do with rooting it. I believe there are a few different methods that people have tried though I cannot speak to how well they work. Easiest way to guarantee amazon doesn't update it is to flash a non-amazon rom lol, but as I said others may know more regarding killing OTA
Really? So you think its as simple as putting a ROM on i.e. CM7, something that isn't stock and the update won't get through?
If so that sounds pretty simple...

Let's put it this way, I bought my kindle in late december; amazon pushed an update, I've never once seen
Flash cm9/cm7/miui once rooted. and you wont see updates from amazon.
Thanks guys that's really good news. It would be pointless for me to keep standard as I wouldn't get any amazon services being in the UK.
Next question, how are you finding the tablet with a flashed ROM, is it smooth running with no issues?

i bought my kindle preordered last november. in a couple of weeks (no custom rom atm) i just use stock rom with minimum tweak. as expected amazon market is useless even if we using us ID. apart of that, all went well until i installed custom rom; cm7. so far so good. i can run most of my fav apps, listening to music, hd video and other simple browsing and reading.
stock adw launcher is a tittle bit sluggish so i just use launcherpro which performing as it should without any hiccup.

Hi, I don't know if its me but that sounded a bit contradictory.
You're on stock ROM, all went well until you installed CM7 and so far so good?
Just so I am clear, you are not running CM7 you are standard with a launcher?

I lived in Saudi Arabia and I bought mine in December last year 2011. I rooted it and install CM7 just after I received it. Currently I am using CM9 (ics) in daily bases with no problem. For sure, I do have a complete backup of the original stock ROM, if I need to go back.

So you bought it to not use as intended and just to change into a bare bones tablet like in am intending?
Is it what you expected? Do you wish you had chosen anything else like the Nook for instance?

Even though you live outside U.S you can still enjoy the different amazon services like videos & app market search for "World Wide Kindle Fire" in the android market.
Those services are the added value of this device, don't give up on it .

Thanks I had never heard of that. So the unroot and root, how long would that take?
Also the reviews seem a bit mixed, lots saying or doesn't work. It must be problems with the server...

I like to have a full control of my device, especially this device is equipped with hardware specifications suitable for functions beyond the original Amazon defined use.

The unroot, root process takes less then a second...
The app use several different servers, so if one server doesn't work you can always switch to the next one... also you can enter your own proxy server manually.

Few questions relating to rooting

firstly, i know that when i root my nexus 7 it will be like a factory restore/wipe.
when that happens any personal stuff like pictures disappears. will i lose the transformers film and books that came with it in the library or will it pick that back up when i sign back in to play store? i downloaded the transformers film for more stable playback rather than streaming, i guess i will have to re-download it wont i?
will rooting it cause the device to not receive any future updates over the air?
lastly, any recommendations for the best, 1-click, method as i have found a few when i googled it so not sure which is the best and/or easiest method.
thanks guys, marc
Post in Q&A if you want a reasonable response.

Hi mate,
I rooted within half an hour of having my nexus, and have been able to download the film again and all of the books that came with it.
To the rooting question. Yes, you can do over the air updates, however they will cause you to loose root. Your could simply use the program in the link below again to root. Or you could download OTA root keeper from the Play Store. This disables root and then you can enable it after the update has finished.
edit: I almost forgot, if you delete any files from the system part, you will not likely be able to use OTA to update. It needs all of the original files to proceed.
This is the program that I used below. It is very simple to use and walks you through every step. It also has a ton of options. I'd recommend using this one. I know its a big program, but it's worth it.

web install question
I've tried searching but I guess my queries haven't been good ones. So, a quick noob question...
One of my favorite features of the Nexus 7 is browsing the Play store on my laptop and being able to just click install from there and the app 'magically' appearing on my tablet. If I root, will that ability go away?
I don't even have my n7 yet, and you helped me!

I'm also thinking about rooting my Nexus 7 Once I get it. I ordered it on Saturday and I'm still waiting
Why wouldn't you root it?

Everything you purchase (or google gives you, which is seen as a purchase) will stay purchased foreveryoi just download it again.

to root or not to root

GF bought me a N7 for xmas (love abbreviations) and it was to upgrade from a kindle fire from previous.
I of course rooted the KF in about 5 minutes and its been running full android since first boot but with my N7 I almost feel I dont have to root for some reason. My NS phone is of course rooted but after setting up the N7 its almost so functional after that it seems to much work since rooting will wipe the device.
Anyway if you guys were in my position would you root or no?
If you need/use apps, that need root, yes you should ^^ if not, IMHO you don't need to, for me and my use (gaming, chatting, browsing, celebrating, xdaing) stock is very comfortable and nice.
It really depends on how you want to use it ^^ test stock for a few days and decide after testing

I didn't due to not having my laptop at time of purchase. While all is well and I don't need root for anything I have been thinking about rooting just because its a nexus and knowing I haven't modded it in the least is starting to semi bother me. However now I only have 8GB free on a 32GB version and really don't want to lose all my data. So I'd recommend it so you don't regret not doing it down the road.

I don't think rooting will wipe SD. It will wipe os. I just went to install button savior and saw it needed too so I'm pretty much decided. I turned on backup through google so hopefully when i root i can just use Google to restore my data for me and just use apex to restore may desktop

I would at least unlock the bootloader since it will wipe your tab completely. Then later on if you want to root you won't need to unlock it.

I got mine for christmas too. Rooted it on the same evening and it's a total different experience. Try flashing Paranoid Android and use Action Launcher. It's the ultimate tablet experience for me because both ROM and Launcher use the 7" display the best.
I root because I know I'm going to need root apps even if I don't feel like using a custom ROM.

I really think there is no reason to root. Stock on the n7 is flawless IMO. I rooted mine just to familiarize myself with the manual process but I have no intention of changing anything. I even got rid of custom recovery and re locked my bootloader.

Your right, I just mean in my case since I didn't unlock bootloader or anything in order to obtain root I would lose all my data. But actually just the rooting part shouldn't wipe anything.

Rooted can not play Movies :(

I think I am stuck but I wanted to make sure. I have done searching but all I can find is older posts. I just got my Nexus 7 and I installed CM10 last night. I just got the movie Ted and I got the digital version but it can only be played through Flixster / Ulterviolet. When I try to open their apps it see's my phone is rooted and will not allow me to play a video.
Is there any way around this? Would like to play Movies on my Nexus 7 but trying to figure out how to do it.
Thanks for any help.
thats their security, so no one will steal their movies. you can use google play movies. root, no problem
Well That stinks. Wish the was a way to use the OTG cable and not have to be rooted. I just do not want to have to pay for the movie again in the play store.

I had exactly the same issue as you did and I solved it using multirom. My internal Rom is rooted and one of my additional roms is stock google unrooted. When I want to watch movies i boot to the stock rom and I can watch films from flixster and guess what I also have Ted! Multirom is awesome.

In searchig on other places then XDA I found this on Droid Forum. Might give this a try.
OTA Rootkeeper. Use this app to "hide" root from other apps. Then unhide root after watching movies so you have the advantages of being rooted. Might try this first.
I tried root apps and they failed. I use sky to stream tv and whatever method I tried to hide root the app always came back with your device is rooted. flixster may work with root hiders. Good luck!

Ok just did this on my Infuse phone to give it a try. Both my Nexus 7 and Infuse are running CM10 roms. Flixster did not work with it rooted in my phone. I used OTA Rootkeeper and did the temp root on it and it worked on my phone!!!! Hope this will work on my Nexus 7 tonight. I do not see why it should not. This is perfect!

[Q] Does Update my Nexus 4 to 4.3 will lose my apps and games?

I want to update to 4.3 but I can't afford losing my apps. And If I root my N4 does my games still available.

Assuming I got your questions right right:
1. If you have the preinstalled stock android and go through with the normal 4.3 update automatically offered by google, it won't affect your apps.
2. Rooting will only give you more "permissions" to change stuff on your phone. Some apps actually require the phone to be rooted to work properly. It should not affect your apps as well. Keep in mind that we are just talking about rooting. If you do this for later usage of another rom, installing that WILL affect your apps.
Hope I could help you.
So If I root this, I will not lose my games and apps right?

As long as you do this carefully and don't screw it up (just look for instructions here, they are quiet good) then your apps will be fine.
Of course, if you do screw it up, your apps will be the least of your problems.
I recommend reading this beforehand:
