Newbie here

Hey guys,
I am new to flashing and rooting and stuff and am needing some help with all this. I'm kinda getting lost in the forums, reading all this stuff I have a stock Vibrant that i want to root and put a Froyo rom on it. I am currently on 2.1 of course. Can anyone kinda guide me through this?

Thanks guys, I'm going to have to read this more carefully apparently. Let me ask this before i do anything to the phone. What backup program should i get if i need to restore it back to stock everything? I want to make sure i have that done before i try any of this. I've done Iphones and stuff, unlocking them and jailbreaking them, those were a piece of cake, but never done a custom rom on an android phone before, nor have i ever rooted one. so im kinda nervous at all this

you should make a nandroid backup, that will be a failsafe but your lifesaver will be odin. when you think you bricked your phone it will rise from the grave. i love odin

Use Odin to get back to Stock. The Bible in the Development thread has the links for Odin download, also the links for the stock android ROMs to odin back to. Make sure you can get into the Download mode before doing anything. Especially using your hardware keys. (to verify that your phone is not hardware locked). If it is you have to install the JI6 to get the hardware key issue fixed.

my noob guide (signature) has videos... you can use your pc (ODIN) and have a rooted 2.2 phone in like 2 minutes!

Hey bud. If you need some visual help, I should have my videos up by tonight and ready for viewing tomorrow morning. I've dubbed it my choose your own samsung vibrant adventure, so hopefully you can see what it looks like and get your questions answered.

thanks guys, the videos are a big help. 2 things that im trying to find is the Odin download and the Nandroid download. Can't seem to find a link for those.

^ the noob guide has a link to download ODIN (and the files needed).
The ALT METHOD listed is Froyo with root already enabled... doesnt get much easier! It's in my signature, or the sticky in the Q&A section.
Also, to clarify, once you use ODIN and flash this (which gives you froyo+root) you can download Rom Manager from the market.... you use it to instal clockwork recovery.... you use clockwork recovery to make a nandroid backup of your system. You can't do this until you have root.

^ please read both sticky's in my signature before you proceed. If you read those, this is very straight-forward.
You would need to root and download rom manager
install clockwork recovery
move the .zip to sdcard/ (internal memory)
reboot into recovery
flash the file
reboot
but please read my guide... if it doesnt make it obvious, please let me know what needs to be updated.

Thanks for your help! I finally understand all of it. Apparently the Flash Clockworks didn't install correctly...so when i tried to open the zip it would open. I installed Axura on it just now and it looks like its running smoothly! Thanks for everyone's help and sticking with me!

How to do a complete system restore?

Let me apologize for being a newbie as I come from 5 years of using Windows Mobile and just got my first Tab/Android 2 weeks ago. This is all new to me.
After messing up with some system files and factory applications (like I removed stk.apk and other things) I decided to do a full hardware reset. This is something I did many times in Windows Mobile... whats bad get overwriten in ROM and whats missing gets back where it was. But is seems on this Tab this is not the case.
After the full resetthings only got dramatically worse. All the missing system apps are still missing (I thought they be "restored") and nothing works, just crashes one after the next, cant use anything. I also tried with the system off the method of pressing and holding the “Volume Up” and “Power” buttons at the same time, then after recovery screen appears navigate and select “wipe data / Factory reset” and pressing the “Home” button, but after that and the system re-starts, same thing! All bad.
Can someone please explain to me how to do a full rstore where all system files, all and everythign gets back as it was in the Tab as it was shipped? What a flippin' nightmare... Windows Mobile, I love you!

No no, that doesnt restore anything! All missing files dont get restored. I need a full stock ROM image and restore EVERYTHING. Thats what I dont know where to get and how to do...

Yeh i realized that after reading your post properly sorry man, i guess you can just flash one of roms found here, like rotos or modaco's JMI, that would atlest give you a work tab till you can find a stock samsung rom
If you dont have cwm installed you can flash with odin or heidmill (sp)

Yeah, I enever flashed the Tab. Can U advise me on a stable "OK" ROM? Where can i find odin or heidmill and some sort of a guide to help me step-by-step? I have positively no clue what I am doing... sorry for my ignorance... I feel thoroughly stupid...

First of all, you need to post what "type" of Tab you have, which is generally going to be determined by your country and/or carrier.
Flashing a new Android ROM isn't a particularly complicated process, but it can seem daunting if you've not done it before - this is especially true when using Odin or Heimdall over a "recovery" based flash.
FWIW, the reason your "factory reset" didn't work is because all is essentially does it reformat the /data partition (a generalisation, but close enough for these purposes). On a stock Tab, you cannot mount /system as read/write, so you are unable to change the contents of that partition. This means that on a stock Tab, /system should never change.
However, when you root the device you give yourself the ability to remount /system as read/write and thus make changes which are not going to affected by a factory reset.

Thanks for the link... yes Ive seen that master thread... I just keep reading from link to link and thread to thread and all gets more complicated, I keep downloading more files and installing more stuff but in the end Im more confused and positively going no where. There is not one simple, from start to finish guideline on how to do the process of wiping all data and installing a new ROM. Ive done this endless times on many phones under WinMo, and with more or less difficulty never had any problems getting this done. But here, the more I read the more utterly chaotically confused I am.
I am yet to have anyone explain what type of Tab I have. Its GSM, I think its Euro, bought in Hong Kong. I have found out all bootloaders and stuff seem to be cleaer and I should be able to flash anything. Its a GT-P1000 and Baseband P1000ZHJJ1. This is all I know.

Its pretty much the same as mine then, so i recommend you use modacos kernel and rom and installing cwm

If you have and external sd card (one that you put into the side of the tab)
You can flash the ext4 kernel via odin, its pretty simple, there will be instructions in the threads.
Are you still able to go on the market? If so download the cwm app and use that so you get the awesome recovery menu and features, you can then use it to flash a new rom and make backups that are really really easy to restore. Seeing it looks like you like to mess around with stuff i suggest it the best way to go.

Ok thanks for the tips. I have finally managed to get the Tab working again and flashed it with Roto JMI Pre-Rooted Firmware v2. All seems OK at this point. Ill check the links you sent me and follow-up. Flashing Roto JMI Pre-Rooted Firmware v2 with Odin3 1.7 is easy so I hope modacos kernel and rom and installing cwm are easy as well.

A little off topic:
I just got my SGT on Friday and want to root&/flash custom ROM. Gonna definitely root soon...But thinking of holding off on the custom ROM until CM7 is stable or a nice clean Honeycomb ROM is cooked
Does ClockWorkMod require root? I know Titanium Backup does. Can't really do any "fun" things with the tab until it's rooted it seems.

Noob needs help - Totally overloaded with info!

Firstly, thanks for such a great repository of info. I have successfully managed to root my phone using Chainfire's method. I'm supremely happy to have even accomplished that.
I'm not a tech noob, but I'm quite new to Androids.
The feeling of frustration at trying to learn new terms and make sense out of all this information is HUGE. I have seen various "noob" entitled threads, as well as threads (Like ChainFire's) that make it somewhat easier. However, there seems to be so many threads to look through, and different info/terms that at this point trying to add a battery percentage mod to the status bar (which I'm sure is an easy easy thing to some of you) has become quite the gargantuan task for me.
---to that topic i'm having trouble understanding what it means when people say "flash using CWM". I understand "flash" (i think) and i know what CWM is, but have no idea what steps to take to "flash the necessary apk" files.
Do i use CWM? I've seen mention of using a root explorer or just adding the files overtop.
Then I've read "backup first". Yes, i know i want to do that. I have Titanium Backup on my device. And I've backed it up> but then i read that i should be using Nandroid. Where the hell do i get that? lolz. I mean I've searched for it and found threads, but from HTC section. Is it even compatible? No D/L links...

Speaking of Roms...
If I have KF3 on my phone, and i wanted to put Villain Rom v.2 on it, would i need to install KF2? Or is it recommended to put on KG1? Am I flashing that like I flashed the kernels when rooting (via odin)?

If you have rooted your phone using Chaninfiire Kernel you should have an app called CWM. you need to put the apk in your internal storage using PC, then open CWM, theer is an option to install apk. select that and browse to the file.. all done

it means backing up ur phone using CWM.. open CWM and theer is a backup option select that or just boot to recovery power off then Power+home key+ volume Up) and select backup from there

no ur not required to put KF2 first. flash the villain rom using CWM (install zip from sd card)

I did have a problem with the CWM, I did pretty much exactly as you mentioned - prior to me making this thread - and I used cwm to browse to the location with the apk on my sd card. installed... nothing happened.
re: cwm and back up - again, did as you had mentioned, but when i go into cwm and press "backup" it give me option to name the file, and then resets into recovery mode (i think - as i've used the buttons method to get to the same screen) but there is no "back up" option listed. also there is some csc error message. see picture.
re: villain rom. so to confirm, I do not have to change from kf3 to another kernel to install VR2.0?

Have to agree, especially for people coming form the world of Ilockedinsideaboxfullofnothingtochangeordophone

according to that pic..u dont have cwm installed properly.. that recovery screen is from the default recovery which comes from the phone..ur not flashing your rooted kernel properly.. ur recovery screen should be orange in colour and it will be stated there clockwork mod recovery
and you can safely ignore that csc error..

You mean like my Blackberry? heh. for sure.
I'm hoping with the Custom Rom it's got less bloatware, better battery life.

I never installed cwm as a separate action. Only used the "cwm" that came with chainfire's stuff. I've seen the orange colour you speak of in an faq I've found, but I'm not sure how to remedy this....
I am using the system as described for flashing kernels in Chainfire's thread.
1. debug mode on phone
2. phone into download mode (three buttons)
3. start Odin
4. plug phone into usb
5. browse to zip/tar file of unsecured
6. phone reboots
7. root phone
8. install secured kernel to sd card
9. use cwm to flash that kernel. (which did so successfully i believe)
Is there another step I should have done to install CWM? will reflashing the kernel via odin fix this?

ur puting the kernel in the PDA section ?? and it is the chainfire kernel ur flashing using ODIN??

Flash
Reboot
You get yellow triangle
to remove triangle use a usb jig..its the best option ..u can get it from ebay for less then 10 bux
or
transfer zimage file from the CF kernel.tar file (extract) to internal storage
boot to download mode
stock kernel >> PDA (ODIN)
flash
reboot
open up CWM application(should be in your apps)
choose flash kernel
browse to the zimage file from earlier (from cf kernel)
all done
your step 8 looks wrong.. secured kernel would mean stock..u will not flash the stock kernel (secured)

Not unless bloatware has been removed . Read the rom posts in dev section .
Villain lite rom would be one with less bloatware or use the remove bloatware script same section .
Battery life is more than just the rom much is down to user apps installed .
Villian full rom thread has some useful battery info over the last ten or so pages .

initially i had rooted with the one click method, and then still didn't have root so changed and did the chainfire method. but still put a stock kernel on after flashing and getting root with super one click. I think I didn't realize that the CF kernel means I get root without having to use superone click. and still put a stock kernel back on afterwards.

I purchased one from somewhere in the UK (off ebay), just waiting for it to arrive.
So now I've gotten my CWM working and i've backed up my phone with titanium and cwm (no need for nand i guess?) Can i safely try to add the mods for the battery %?

as far as i think..backup using cwm is nand backup..unless i am wrong
once you have cwm backup u can play around with mods

Whats Wrong with my fone? someone please help

i hope im posting this in the right place, ive never really messed with forums before, but anyways
ive done everything there is to do to get a custom rom on my streak (StreakDroid) including the whole flash recovery, when i do that it all seems like its working, but when i go to where you are supposed to install the streakdroid (when you turn your phone on with both volumes ect) soo when i get the screen with the blue letters, its tottally different it says something like "insert a SD card containing an update file(/sdcard/update.pkg and the only choice it gives me is press up on the volume to turn device off. BTW i did already had the streakdroid on my sd card. someone please HELP me

i already know all of this, but thanks for trying, i cant root it eather, i forgot to mention, it keeps failing, and ive tryed all versions of oneclick

Do this - you do not need root to use that method and is you read the previous links I posted you will figure out how to use StreakMod Recovery even if you aren't rooted.

I got same problem when I installed custom rom at very first time from stock 2.2.
Do this if still can boot to stock rom..
1) Rooting with Gingerbreak.apk , this will work..
2) After rooting done, use R.E and change one file in the system as this file automatically blocked custom recovery when reboot so your problem happened... your DS5 still booted on stock recovery even already flashed StreakMod recovery...
Read this.
3) After modifying one system file then flash StreakMod recovery then you can continue....

i tried that too, but like ive said when i first made this post, when i go into streakmode (when i turn it on with both volume bottons ect) and go into mode after that all i get is something like for an emergency restore blah blah , idk whats wrong, ive done the streakmod right and still,

i have att 2.2 rom it wont allow me to install other source apks

Regarding the issues faced by the OP on this thread:
1. If you are seeing mention of an update file when trying to access StreakMod Recovery, then you let the Streak boot regularly once you installed StreakMod, rather than immediately booting into StreakMod Recovery. If you let the Streak boot normally, StreakMod Recovery gets overwritten. If you're trying to install StreakDroid, then you need to hold down volume down and up as soon as you finish flashing StreakMod Recovery via Fastboot to use it.
Custom ROMs do not have the problem with recovery images being overwritten.
2. The recommended method of rooting a Streak is to flash StreakMod Recovery and then flashing Superuser.zip through it. One click rooting methods are not 100% reliable. The OP is attempting to flash a custom ROM, which doesn't require flashing Superuser.zip. It DOES require flashing StreakMod Recovery.
3. AT&T was supposed to permit sideloading on newer AT&T ROMs. Go to Settings>Applications and make sure "Unknown Sources" is checked. If the option is not present in the ROM, then either the ROM must be changed or a PC application such as the Sideload Wonder Machine must be used.
OP, you were attempting to change the ROM to StreakDroid. Did you change your mind?

[SOLVED] Vibrant Root Concerns

Hey there. I rooted my Vibrant successfully, but realized I left some important things out. I used this guide to root my Vibrant: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723479
The problems:
1) I can't nandroid (not that I need to, I only have 4 apps)
2) I would like to install either Miui v4 or CyanogenMod 9 but cannot as my recovery screen does not show me the options to do so (I only get the 4 options you normally would get unrooted, such as "Reinstall Packages"), so I'm stuck with the lame default homescreen.
3) I'm currently on 2.1-update1; should I upgrade to 2.2? If so, must I unroot to upgrade, and then reroot? And if this were the case, how do you unroot, and can I reroot using the same method in the link above?

and noticed the line "This guide assumes the Samsung Vibrant already has Android 2.2 build UVKB5 already installed on it."
Does this mean 2.2 is required to install the CWM Recovery?

I'm not sure how you don't have CWM recovery if you followed the guide as it is written. Maybe its because the 2.1 is updated? I would do the following and see if that's all it takes. You definitely don't want to update to stock 2.2 via Kies or anything of that nature.
Worst case scenario, we can have you Odin back to stock JFD. You'll be smooth sailing from there.
Search the forums and find the update.zip for CWM for our Vibrant.
Put that on the lowest level of your INTERNAL storage. Not your microsd card. For example f:\update.zip
Now go to your boring 4 option stock recovery and select reinstall packages. It will reboot to the same boring screen. Select reinstall packages again, and it will reboot into Clockwork Mod Recovery.
Let me know if that does anything for you. Also what version of stock recovery do you have?

Can pull that directly from my signature, if OP wants. (Only works on Eclair [JFD] build btw)
Also OP, You will have to have a ROM that you are going to want to flash saved on your Internal SD card. Jsut download it, put in a folder and follow the ROM OP's instructions. Since you are fresh and new, I would NOT suggest flashing anything of ICS or JB until you get the hang of things first.
Read, read and then read somemore. When it comes time to flash ICS or beyond, there is a guide in my signature. Good luck and make sure to hit Toast's "Thanks" button. He is a good asset to have around here.

I'll try the Odin thing out first before I even try to flash (you need root first before flashing, I'm assuming). Just out of curiosity, what is JFD and Odin? I'm still gonna try it out using the guides found here, but just curious.
EDIT: Damn, it worked like a charm! Now I have CWM. The mistake I made was that I only installed the Superuser/ROOT and not both. Gonna play with it for a bit now
