Newbie here

Hey guys,
I am new to flashing and rooting and stuff and am needing some help with all this. I'm kinda getting lost in the forums, reading all this stuff I have a stock Vibrant that i want to root and put a Froyo rom on it. I am currently on 2.1 of course. Can anyone kinda guide me through this?

Thanks guys, I'm going to have to read this more carefully apparently. Let me ask this before i do anything to the phone. What backup program should i get if i need to restore it back to stock everything? I want to make sure i have that done before i try any of this. I've done Iphones and stuff, unlocking them and jailbreaking them, those were a piece of cake, but never done a custom rom on an android phone before, nor have i ever rooted one. so im kinda nervous at all this

you should make a nandroid backup, that will be a failsafe but your lifesaver will be odin. when you think you bricked your phone it will rise from the grave. i love odin

Use Odin to get back to Stock. The Bible in the Development thread has the links for Odin download, also the links for the stock android ROMs to odin back to. Make sure you can get into the Download mode before doing anything. Especially using your hardware keys. (to verify that your phone is not hardware locked). If it is you have to install the JI6 to get the hardware key issue fixed.

my noob guide (signature) has videos... you can use your pc (ODIN) and have a rooted 2.2 phone in like 2 minutes!

Hey bud. If you need some visual help, I should have my videos up by tonight and ready for viewing tomorrow morning. I've dubbed it my choose your own samsung vibrant adventure, so hopefully you can see what it looks like and get your questions answered.

thanks guys, the videos are a big help. 2 things that im trying to find is the Odin download and the Nandroid download. Can't seem to find a link for those.

^ the noob guide has a link to download ODIN (and the files needed).
The ALT METHOD listed is Froyo with root already enabled... doesnt get much easier! It's in my signature, or the sticky in the Q&A section.
Also, to clarify, once you use ODIN and flash this (which gives you froyo+root) you can download Rom Manager from the market.... you use it to instal clockwork recovery.... you use clockwork recovery to make a nandroid backup of your system. You can't do this until you have root.

You would need to root and download rom manager
install clockwork recovery
move the .zip to sdcard/ (internal memory)
reboot into recovery
flash the file
reboot
but please read my guide... if it doesnt make it obvious, please let me know what needs to be updated.

Thanks for your help! I finally understand all of it. Apparently the Flash Clockworks didn't install correctly...so when i tried to open the zip it would open. I installed Axura on it just now and it looks like its running smoothly! Thanks for everyone's help and sticking with me!

Very new and complete noob

Hi all.
I have a Samsung Vibrant that's still on 2.1. I want to get into rooting and running custom ROMs, but my first attempt failed miserably. I had only rooted the phone and played with a little bit of overclocking for a couple of days when I received an OTA update announcement. Not thinking about it, I accepted it. After that, I got stuck on the "Vibrant" startup screen during the reboot. I took the phone and flashed it back to stock using the method most use (ODIN?). Anyway, even back to stock it would get stuck in a loop of running the media scanner during startup...needless to say I had to get a new phone.
My point is that I want to get my phone more personalized but I'm a bit stand-off-ish because of my prior experience. There is a ton of terminology I'm not familiar with at all...the most I can do with a computer is turn it on and use it.
Is there a place I can go that's an entry level course in rooting and the terminology associated with it? Thanks.

What is "kies?" Also, I've been reading through (obviously there's a lot of reading to do) but I have another question that relates to my previous experimentation with rooting:
Is there ANY way to do a full back up of my phone now so that if I ever have to go back to stock using ODIN I can go back to how my phone is now? The last time I tried I could not find the same software I had before and a few things had been changed...basically like it wasn't a true stock file.

Here are a list of things you are going need if you want to update your phone to 2.2
1. If you do not know what you are doing (which is the case) then, read
member-s15274n Noobie guide in the Bible. This will get you up to speed on the knowledge necessary to modify the phone.
2. If you decide to do the factory (from tmobile/samsung) update, then read on that process. I personally do not recommend updating that way.
3. If you update via some of the excellent roms in the Dev section (which I recommend) then read up on them Master's Axura, Jellette's Einherjar rom and Team Whiskey's Roms are all excellent and there are others YOU NEED TO READ UP ON THESE,
4. If you go with a custom rom Then you need The following programs/patches:
A. Odin 1.7 (this installs on the computer)
B. Oneclick root. (Go to unlockr.com) they have a video easy to follow and have the links for this.
C. Clockwork (Rom Manager) free installs on the phone
D. Titanium Backup (installs o nthe phone)
E. Original 959JFD 2.1 stock ROM (in case you f#ck-up) you can odin back
F. The Custom rom of your choice.
That is all you need, read up and once you get going you will maybe have questions..... Ask in the Q & A we all here welcome a new person to the forum and help them.

Samsung Kies is an official program that syncs your phone to your PC. This includes downloading and installing official OS updates to your phone.
A NANDroid backup can backup everything except the kernel. When you restore this backup your phone will go back to the state it was in when you backed it up.
Remember to always read a lot before doing anything.
I'm kinda new too. I personally chose Team Whiskey's ROMs. Their guide and s15274n's Noob Guide helped me a lot. Have fun!

Ok, now I really feel like a noob....I am to the phone rooting idea, but not to forums...but I cannot for the life of me find the Developers section...

How to do a complete system restore?

Let me apologize for being a newbie as I come from 5 years of using Windows Mobile and just got my first Tab/Android 2 weeks ago. This is all new to me.
After messing up with some system files and factory applications (like I removed stk.apk and other things) I decided to do a full hardware reset. This is something I did many times in Windows Mobile... whats bad get overwriten in ROM and whats missing gets back where it was. But is seems on this Tab this is not the case.
After the full resetthings only got dramatically worse. All the missing system apps are still missing (I thought they be "restored") and nothing works, just crashes one after the next, cant use anything. I also tried with the system off the method of pressing and holding the “Volume Up” and “Power” buttons at the same time, then after recovery screen appears navigate and select “wipe data / Factory reset” and pressing the “Home” button, but after that and the system re-starts, same thing! All bad.
Can someone please explain to me how to do a full rstore where all system files, all and everythign gets back as it was in the Tab as it was shipped? What a flippin' nightmare... Windows Mobile, I love you!

No no, that doesnt restore anything! All missing files dont get restored. I need a full stock ROM image and restore EVERYTHING. Thats what I dont know where to get and how to do...

Yeh i realized that after reading your post properly sorry man, i guess you can just flash one of roms found here, like rotos or modaco's JMI, that would atlest give you a work tab till you can find a stock samsung rom
If you dont have cwm installed you can flash with odin or heidmill (sp)

Yeah, I enever flashed the Tab. Can U advise me on a stable "OK" ROM? Where can i find odin or heidmill and some sort of a guide to help me step-by-step? I have positively no clue what I am doing... sorry for my ignorance... I feel thoroughly stupid...

First of all, you need to post what "type" of Tab you have, which is generally going to be determined by your country and/or carrier.
Flashing a new Android ROM isn't a particularly complicated process, but it can seem daunting if you've not done it before - this is especially true when using Odin or Heimdall over a "recovery" based flash.
FWIW, the reason your "factory reset" didn't work is because all is essentially does it reformat the /data partition (a generalisation, but close enough for these purposes). On a stock Tab, you cannot mount /system as read/write, so you are unable to change the contents of that partition. This means that on a stock Tab, /system should never change.
However, when you root the device you give yourself the ability to remount /system as read/write and thus make changes which are not going to affected by a factory reset.

Thanks for the link... yes Ive seen that master thread... I just keep reading from link to link and thread to thread and all gets more complicated, I keep downloading more files and installing more stuff but in the end Im more confused and positively going no where. There is not one simple, from start to finish guideline on how to do the process of wiping all data and installing a new ROM. Ive done this endless times on many phones under WinMo, and with more or less difficulty never had any problems getting this done. But here, the more I read the more utterly chaotically confused I am.
I am yet to have anyone explain what type of Tab I have. Its GSM, I think its Euro, bought in Hong Kong. I have found out all bootloaders and stuff seem to be cleaer and I should be able to flash anything. Its a GT-P1000 and Baseband P1000ZHJJ1. This is all I know.

Its pretty much the same as mine then, so i recommend you use modacos kernel and rom and installing cwm

If you have and external sd card (one that you put into the side of the tab)
You can flash the ext4 kernel via odin, its pretty simple, there will be instructions in the threads.
Are you still able to go on the market? If so download the cwm app and use that so you get the awesome recovery menu and features, you can then use it to flash a new rom and make backups that are really really easy to restore. Seeing it looks like you like to mess around with stuff i suggest it the best way to go.

Ok thanks for the tips. I have finally managed to get the Tab working again and flashed it with Roto JMI Pre-Rooted Firmware v2. All seems OK at this point. Ill check the links you sent me and follow-up. Flashing Roto JMI Pre-Rooted Firmware v2 with Odin3 1.7 is easy so I hope modacos kernel and rom and installing cwm are easy as well.

A little off topic:
I just got my SGT on Friday and want to root&/flash custom ROM. Gonna definitely root soon...But thinking of holding off on the custom ROM until CM7 is stable or a nice clean Honeycomb ROM is cooked
Does ClockWorkMod require root? I know Titanium Backup does. Can't really do any "fun" things with the tab until it's rooted it seems.

Froyo Update Won't Install

I have the Samsung Fascinate and I recently rooted it to get all the wonderful benefits that come with rooting.
I downloaded the leaked Froyo update, renamed it "update.zip" and put it in my sd card folder in order to update.
I then turned off my phone and pushed the power button plus the volume up and down until I got to the boot screen. I kept getting an error saying it couldn't verify the package (or something along those lines) and then it sent me to a screen with the triangle, exclamation point and the little droid guy.
I also tried using Rom Manager but the same thing happened.
I hear you are supposed to use Odin, but I am running on a mac and Odin is a windows application.
Please help me, I'm desperate to get the Froyo update on my device.

Yikes u didn't do any research at all did you?? U can't use Odin on Mac....and u need it. Do u even have cwm? Probably not since u didn't Odin. U need to Odin cwm...Make a backup...Odin eb01 modem...flash rom. Update.zip is not correct...u don't rename .zip roms...you flash them via cwm. Not trying to bash u....but you are way off...and getting help via forums will b tough.
You need to go to irc and be polite and find some help there. Someone should hopefully be able to help you...I will b on eventually.

I did my research but if I'm not literate with how or what a CWM is or how to use it, that doesn't mean I didn't do my research.
But are you telling me I can't install the update without a windows computer?
I have access to one where I am but I would rather know all the steps before I get on someone else's computer and start trying to figure it out there.
I looked through all 50 or so pages of the Froyo leaked thread and I saw a few people who understood all these things, but if I don't understand and there isn't a tutorial it makes it harder for me to accomplish my goal.

This might work if u can get into download mode. U need to find all the links urself since I'm on tapatalk.
First off...find a pc. Without one you can't do anything. Put ur eb01 rom on sdcard for later. Instal the 32 bit or 64 bit Samsung drivers depending on ur pc. For many..its the 32 bit. Then get Odin. U will need to find a link to cwm...if I'm not mistaking there is one on like the 2nd or 3rd page in android development section...will say updated cwmq for dj05 or dl09 or something like that. Find directions of how to use Odin...but simply place the cwm.tar file in the pda section on Odin...then click start. When that's done...u should make a backup...however...u may not b able to boot up because of what u have already done. U may try odining the eb01 modem. Once u have that done...hold up down and power to get I to your new updated cwm. From there click instal zip from sdcard...and flash ur eb01 rom of choice....wipe wipe wipe...reboot system.
Again...this may not work since I'm not possitive what u already did to ur phone by not doing your research. Like I already said...be polite and head over to irc. .someone will have more time than I do to fix ur phone.

You obviously didn't research. There is an eb01 walkthrough on fascinate development section...impossible to miss. If ur incompetent at following step by step directions u should not be Modding your phone. Seek help and knowledge before doing anything...u don't want a 600 dollar paper clip do you?

Not to be a ****...but the first thing you learn when reading is how to flash the modem using ODIN...so, yeah....
Since you've f'd up the phone already. Download the restore to stock files and odin. Go to someone with a PC and follow the restore directions to the T. DO NOT FALTER.

No, but I also don't see the need for the disrespectful way you are treating someone looking for help.
Not everyone out there is as "smart" as you may be with modding but that's what this forum is for. Questions and answers, not smartass replies that don't help at all.
I appreciate the other posters response because at least he gave me information with no attitude. If you want to help someone, help them, don't demean them and offer a little advice.

Honestly, you haven't done anything to your phone yet, so it shouldn't be running any differently than it was before.
There is a way to push CWM using ADB and Terminal on a Mac, but you would still need Odin to flash the modem, so might as well do everything that way. Download this Odin package from Android Central, and flash that using the PDA box in Odin. After that, you can flash a different 2.2 ROM or theme if you like

The only thing I am having trouble with is how to "flash" something.

Go to the Eb01 modem thread and read it. They will tell you how to "flash". You download the modem, plug in your phone, select PDA in ODIN and hit write or whatever...

Not searching for things will get you flamed, ignored and banned (If not reading the rules). The reason I suggested you flash back to complete stock is because until you know what flashing is, difference between a ROM and a Radio...you are in dangerous territory of bricking your phone.

My question is: can I install EB01 on top of stock, unmodded EA28 (which is the latest Eclair from Verizon) without wiping my data? All sets of instructions I've read include wiping, wiping, wiping... But since the new ROM is supposedly signed with the same Samsung/Verizon key as my current ROM, why shouldn't I be able to just install it on top, without wiping my data?
Or is it that because the guy who posted the ROM actually modified it, it's no longer signed with the Samsung or Verizon key?
I searched, but didn't find. I think the answer to this may be relevant to the original poster of this thread too, that's why I'm posting here.

It's always recommended to wipe. Those that don't are typically those who end up complaining about bad battery life, force close loops and utter suckageness...now flashing let's say super clean 2.0 to 2.2...that's fine bypassing the wipe, but imho that's the only exception.

You can install without wiping (saying from experience) as long as you dont mind problems later. I had plenty of force close problems and widget problems when I didnt wipe data.
Most ROM here are modified, to help protect the person who leaked it.

Interesting. Do we know the cause of those problems? How come no such problems exist when you update OTA with a similar official build?
I'm a developer and it seems weird to me that if you're starting with a stock ROM and upgrading to another stock ROM, apps will have issues. Or are the issues due to the fact that the newer ROM is still buggy (and that's probably why they haven't officially released it yet)?
Also, it doesn't hurt to try, right? And if I do get problems, THEN I can just do a simple wipe and start off clean. But if I don't have huge problems, I don't have to go through the trouble of restoring all my apps and settings, logging into everything again, etc.

it's not hard to restore apps/data, use titanium backup.
go ahead and try it without wiping, just do a full nandroid backup first. then if it sucks or you get funny errors you can revert really easily. I'd wipe with a major change like this, but if you're determined to try it there's really no big downside. just back up!
I ran EB01 over the weekend, didn't like a couple of things and was back up and running on DL09 in no time when I decided to switch back.

Its recommended to wipe but I've seen it a lot where u OK not wiping... u can try without and it u get bootloop just do a wipe. Like posted...titanium backup is ur bff when I mod.
Also about the post about me being rude.. I gave u the info u need...just telling you to research. U said u did, and I pointed out u didn't. If your not going to take the time to learn what ur doing...then expect help ASAP...expect ppl to b a bit rude. Ppl are welcome to help...but if u do something dumb without research...expect people to tell you.

Just FYI everyone, I was able to to install Froyo without wiping and everything works fine. (except that my home screen shortcuts and maybe even some of my settings got reset... which was one of the things I was trying to avoid... but whatever.). The only issue I've run into so far is that Google Maps hangs for many seconds every once in a while. But I reset its internal cache and it's better now. All other apps are working fine.

Help installing ICS!

I'm a relatively new user of the android device and I was wondering if someone could help me install ICS on my phone.
The first thing I did was the section 5 of this thread to root my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070
Then, I tried following the instructions on this thread to install ICS: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11850-romicsiml74k-teamhacksungs-ics-port-for-fascinate-build-5-0114/
One thing I noticed from reading around though, was that I needed to do a NANDROID backup. In order to do that, I downloaded the 'ROM Manager' and tried to 'Reboot into Recovery'. However, it wouldn't boot into recovery, so I did a quick search and figured out the solution, which was found here: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-samsung-galaxy-s-i9000/
In order to solver this problem, I realized that I had to download a kernel that's applicable to my drive. I'm now looking at my kernel version to figure out which file to download, but I'm having a hard time going from there.
As you can see, I'm kind of all over the place, so I decided to stop before I screw up my phone. Can anyone please help me out or point me to the right direction?

Use droidstyle's guide for everything. It is step by step, no way to fail.

First you don't need to root your phone to flash a new rom. We almost need his in big bold letters in the guide, because this is a huge misconception.
I never do.nadroids, I back up what I want and reinstall.the programs I need. You can always Odin back to stock if.something goes wrong. The advantage to rooting is that you.can now use titanium backup to back up your programs. (I have the least problems if I install them from the market and then restore data only.)
Then flash CWM fixed for CM7. Three finger into recovery. If the phone boots it will reflash the stock recovery and you'll have to flash it again.
Install ICS.
??

I see You found section 5 in my guide, but you missed the part right at the top that says "this is not needed if flashing a custom rom". Also, how did you miss section 3 that has the exact instructions for putting ICS on your phone?

Damn it, you're right. I guess I'm an idiot.
Is it OK that I go straight to section 3 right now? Or must I un-root the device first?

No your fine to move ahead, a rooted phone wont hurt you.
