I was looking at the back cover of the Nexus 7 while it was dismantled when I attempted to fix the screen tearing issues, I was wondering how easy those would be to replace?
Isn't the NFC embedded into the cover as well as the chip on the controller board? Or am I completely off base?
Does anyone know if it is possible to just buy the covers themselves?
You would have to purchase a replacement part. Doubt there would be 3rd party ones since there are all the antennas in it. The chip for the NFC is in the unit, but the antenna is in the cover.
Where would I be able to find a replacement part? Because I was wanting to try to make it my own, but I would have a hard time believe google (or asus for that matter) would sell me an individual back cover.
(As a noob, I am unable to post proper links. Sorry.)
The only place I have found that has individual parts is powerbookmedic.com, they have backs for $30US.
They actually have all of the parts you could possibly need (near as I can tell, from the sites that did teardowns). Building a whole 8GB Nexus would cost $440US though.

Hi i have looked just about everywhere i can find and have been unable to find any sort of concrete information, if anyone has themselves replaced the digitizer how did you go about doing it? As of now i am unable to tell if it is possible to take the screen off from the front and snake the connector back through where the other one went and just hook it all in that way (it is my understanding that it is held in by double sided tape making this possible) thus avoiding taking it apart piece by piece, or if i will have to take the entire unit apart piece by piece to do the install(also i suppose if anyone knows a few specific screws that will release the whole insides as one unit it would be very helpful). Anyways anyone with any experience doing this your advice would be greatly appreciated and if not i suppose i will be tinkering with it and try to figure it out on my own.

Try youtube. I found one for the eepad tf101 i think http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-6dKsGJ4VY&feature=plcp its the best reference you can get...otherwise keep trying repair websites I think Ifixit would be a good place ( although I can't be 100% sure). I dont know for sure but it seems that the lcd and the digitiser are most likely adhered together, most capacitive displays are these days are; so the best option would be to use a heat gun to seperate the two or i guess a hairdryer. But thats after you remove all the frame and stuff off it lololol. So you might just have to spend at LEAST two days with nothing to do besides repair...If it happened to me and if asus voided my warranty or i ran out of warranty I would do it...considering I have experience with repairing laptop lcds and phones, so I guess I would be brave enough to try. Otherwise the cost of repair is 200+...and by comparing replacement digitisers http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-EeePad-Transformer-TF300-Touch-Screen-Digitizer-Glass-Replacement-Brand-New-/280929374154?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4168b20fca#ht_4213wt_1397 this being the cheapest, you might have to look at the most viable option here. Hope this helps. Goodluck
I dropped my tablet on the table and the screen cracked.
Does anyone know where I can buy a spare screen?
I have tried to search for it but without any luck
You're going to have a tough time finding the screen. If it's just the display itself (not the glass or digitizers), you can find the display for around $60-70 (I can't post URLs, laptopscreen is a company that sells it). Remember that this is just the actual display under the glass, and that you will have to take apart the display/frame assembly itself, which I've never done before.
If you broke the front glass or the digitizers, you're going to have a much tougher time... I dropped my Galaxy Nexus on my TPT, and shattered the screen. Both the touch and pen digitizers stopped working. I had to switch to Pen Only mode to use the tablet without any random movements, and even then I needed to use the keyboard folio. Your options include:
1. Have Lenovo replace the screen ($750 incl. labor and parts).
2. Buy the replacement LCD/frame assembly from IBM/Lenovo (Part #s 04W2150, 04W2151, or 04W2152 if I recall correctly). This is the entire front half of the tablet (glass, digitizer, LCD, buttons, frame and all). If I recall correctly, the prices are $922, $1785, and unlisted respectively for the part numbers.
3. Buy a broken tablet and cannibalize it for parts.
I'm sure you see the only option that makes financial sense is #3, since you can get a refurb or new TPT from $200-300. It's kind of funny. The cost of replacing the screen including parts is more expensive than the entire tablet at launch, and the cost of the part itself is more expensive than the cost of the part and the labor. It's asinine!
Unfortunately, it's also the most time consuming and frustrating option. Be persistent, and don't pay more than you want to. I snagged a 64GB TPT with a broken power button with a failed repair (apparently, they didn't realize you're not supposed to have a solder blob touch multiple contacts of a switch) for $65+shipping with a desk dock. I did a quick screen switch, though I plan on fixing the switch later on for that extra 32GB of storage...
The best deal you'll usually find on eBay is one where the seller doesn't list it in a way that it's easily found by someone else using search. Here are a few search terms I used:
thinkpad tablet
thinkpad 10.1
thinkpad 1838
thinkpad 1839 (this is how I found mine)
thinkpad android
Just keep looking. The process of replacing the screen itself is easy. 2 screws, a quick opening of the plastic case, and 3 ribbon cables. Look at the 3G modem installation videos for more help. Good luck!

My bad. Its just the glass that has got a new not too interesting pattern.
I live in Denmark and they are not common here - and importing one for parts wont be cheap due to custom rules ...
Well I will have to try to find one for parts then on ebay i guess .. now I think i might be a little mad at my self
But THX for your advice and guidance
I've damaged the chrome bezel on my phone fairly badly which is driving me nuts to look at. Is there anyway I can get it replaced / repaired for a reasonable cost? I'm happy to do the repair myself if a new bezel can be bought.
I've been waiting for an answer for this as well...
Same here, just a little chip off the bottom right corner. It's driving me crazy because I take very good care of this phone.
Less than a 3 foot drop, inside of a leather pouch, and the plastic bezel is the only thing that was damaged.
I put in a request to LG to find out how much they would charge to replace this bezel, I'll let you know what I find.
As far as self repair, I haven't found anywhere that sells the front housing...
Would love to know this as well. The iFixit breakdown makes it appear as if the bezel is attached to the display which would make this a difficult repair without shelling out major $$$.
This is the email I got back from LG. From what I gather, it would be between $40-$100. That's not counting shipping.
I still haven't found the replacement frame anywhere and from the video tear down it looks more tedious than I'm willing to deal with. For the convenience, I'll probably just let LG fix it.
Edit: Network timeout double post.

Just drop mine... don't mind the chips, its the dent I put in the corner of the bezel. I'm having some success rolling it out with the back of a spoon.
From what I can see you can't easily remove the bezel from the glass. They come together as one piece. You would probably have to replace the entire screen which is 140 bucks from what I've read.
Sent from my often RMA'd Nexus 4, So that I can use the one I'm using now when I get the 6th and hopefully final one.
If someone found out a proper way to replace bezel, Im either looking for a solution.
Too shame that a 2$ plastic edge replace (which is really vulnerable) must cost up to 100$ beacuse its attached to the screen.... Lame LG
Well actually you can, going to www.parts4repair.com, go to the nexus4 section and u can find a relatively cheap replacement middle frame. As for the how-to, go to youtube and search for a guy named "LE55ONS". Browse his channel for the nexus 4 teardown and step by step replacing, very clear and helpful for me.
My chrome bezel is also damaged and I managed to do the steps above, now all thats left is collecting the guts to tear open my nexus4 lol.
So my Nexus 7 has hard bricked itself and I don't think I'll be able to get a free RMA from Asus because the bootloader was unlocked.
I was considering taking it apart some and selling each part individually to see if I recovery some of the money I spent on it.
My questions are:
Anybody know of how to take it apart? How much money could I make off of each part (battery, display, motherboard, etc). What would be the best way to take it apart to ensure that I can get the most out of the device and ensure the parts don't get damaged? What's a good way to sell these parts?
Thanks.
Pm me and let me know what you would take for the whole thing.
I have 2, and always love having spare parts, just in case.

Watch a few eBay "for parts" auctions for a while... that will give you a sense of how much stuff is selling for.
Also - given that the most common problem is broken/cracked screens, and the LCD+digitizer are arguably the most valuable components in the device, it might be possible to find a functional device with a broken screen for relatively cheap: maybe you will decide to harvest the motherboard, put it in your device and you are back in business.
Then re-sell the other bits to get a little coin back - there are no doubt folks that want the USB sub-board because they have a damaged USB port or blown speakers. Probably no shortage of people that want a replacement battery, too.
For teardown search for "iFixit Nexus 7 teardown"
good luck
PS if you do decide to "part it out" sell the tablet frame, LCD and Digitizer as one piece rather than trying to pry apart stuff that is glued together - let your buyer break stuff rather than doing it yourself before the sale.
Hello everyone,
I seem to have come across an issue that no one on the Internet has run into (I've searched Google for days trying to find someone who had the same experience as me). What happened: I cracked the screen of my brand new Nexus 7 3G tablet. What I did: I phoned the official Asus service/repair place, and asked about how much it would cost to repair it. They replied that it would cost 242 euros for the repair (VAT tax included). Considering that this is almost as much as a new tablet, I thought I'd try to repair it myself using parts, however I couldn't find any site selling the screen assembly for the 3G variant.
What I ended up doing: I got a cheap 8GB Nexus 7 and tried to take the screen assembly from it and use it on my own tablet. The shocking conclusion: It's not compatible. The screws that fix the assembly to the rest of the device are placed in different spots, and the shape of the assembly itself is incompatible. I could have tried to pry the screen off of the assembly and glue it to the 3G's one, but that goes way beyond my skill and knowledge and honestly I didn't want to risk ruining a second device.
Searching Google and a variety of other sites has yielded no answers, and I can't find a screen assembly made for the 3G variant anywhere (there are sites like eBay that list screen assemblies for Nexus 7, but my suspicion is that they are for the WiFi variant only and thus, incompatible.
So I've come to ask this: Is there anywhere I can find a screen assembly for the 3G variant? There seems to be absolutely no information on the Internet regarding this. What else can I do besides paying the obscene amount of money the service is asking for the fix? Honestly I'd rather just throw the tablet away than be ripped off like this.
TL;DR version: Is there any place I can get a screen replacement for the 3G variant of the Nexus 7?
Thank you in advance and sorry for the wall of text.
Take the back cover and logic board from the 3g and put it in the 8gb

I've tried to do that but I ran into the same problem, where the screws on the board differ between the 2 devices, and the frame is different too, so I couldn't fit the board from the 3g device into the wifi one

so did anyone ever find a source for 3g displays? i would like to not have to separate the screen from the frame, but all i can find is the display/digitizer assembly, or display/digitizer with the frame for wifi nexii, which are lacking the 3g antenna and do not have the correct screw threads.
Unfortunately, I gave up searching after running into dead ends for a few weeks. Now my Nexus is tucked away in a drawer, doomed to be abandoned for the foreseeable future. If someone else has had any luck, please post here your experiences.
Thanks.

I have a Nex 7 3G with a broken screen. Replaced it with a regular digitizer for N7 wifi and it works fine. Don't know about the antenna since I don't use the sim card anyway. But that's one way to salvage the tab. Removing the bezel on the N7 8gb is not that hard. Heat it up around the edge with a heatgun at 500 degrees for 30 seconds and just peel it off the digitizer or wedge a guitar pick in between and slice it off the touchscreen. You can use a hairdryer instead for a bit longer.

And how would one put the new digitizer assembly in the frame? Would a special glue be needed, or something?

Any kind of glue that works on plastic and glass is fine so long as it remains flexible after curing time. A strong double-sided tape is an alternative. Some people just preserve the original tape on the bezel. I personally found it to be too weak once used.
i ordered a screen from aliexpress. came relatively quick, including more than enough double-sided sticky stuff, three (!) screen protectors, screwdrivers, a plastic lever, guitar pick thingy. managed to break the new screen while putting it in the old frame cos i heated the frame a bit too much so it got warped at one corner...
Wrongly ordered wifi only version full display set
I had the same issue and ordered Wrongly ordered wifi only version full display set on ebay which came and tried to install in but as expected the screws were not match and i tried to cut of some hinges but later when i powered on the display is really bad its pixleted and colors are corrupted.
touch seems to working but not usable. Any ideas? what can i do with the distorted display?

Hmmm. It might be caused by a difference in how the actual screen works for both models (wifi and 3g). But at the same time it can be an issue with one of your connectors (they are easily damaged even when you're careful), I had a problem with the LCD flex cable connector on my tablet when I first changed my screen. It looked very corrupted when I powered it on and was really worried about the screen itself. I bought a replacement cable from ebay and it turned out okay for me.
@kendong2 and all.
My nexus 7 2013 LTE's screen got cracked. I am getting the nexus 7 2012 led screen online. Shall I but it? Will it be compatible with nexus 2013 LTE?
It definitely won't be compatible. You should find a screen made for the 2013 LTE model.
nope.

which is hard to find. lte and wifi have different screen bevels, which is glued to the glass. in theory removable, in reality i have tried twice to seperate the two and failed both times...

Kindly share a link from where I can get that.

that would be a good start.
the best way to replace broken glass on nexus 7 2012 3g is to buy digitizer with out lcd (i.e only touchscreen glass) you should order the correct one this can be done by noting the serial number of touchglass mine touch glass serial number is ME307TG and replacing it with broken glass
