Its a great tablet but it really depends what you are using it for.
As a true laptop replacement, something you plan to use for work that requires third party programmes, it is just not realistic. I have found it has replaced my laptop in most situations that I would use my computer for entertainment (web browsing, youtube, videos etc), but for real work like data analysis, report writing, multiple monitors and true multitasking, my laptop gets the job done in half the time.
As for windows 8, definately dont buy this in the hope that you will be able to put windows 8 on it. I think the chances of that happening are close to zero. Ubuntu maybe, and remote desktop, yes, but native windows 8... i dont think that will ever happen.
All in all I would summarise by saying:
Tablet Pros:
Lightweight
Portable
No heat/moving parts
Insanely good battery life vs laptop
Detachable screen
Touch Screen
More enjoyable as an entertainment and media consumption device
Many games are more accessible, especially with touch screen controls.
Likely to be cheaper than a laptop
Laptop Pros:
Larger screen (for work)
Full OS means you will be much more productive
Most if not all of the advantages of a laptop come from the operating system so i wont expand on this.
It all comes down to one thing - what you want to be using it for.

I fully agree on this, I still use my laptop when I have to create more than just an email. For work the TF300T is only a benefit when it comes to reading a lot of documents. It saves time, for printing documents is not needed. Annotations however are a bit harder to make (as they involve typing on the tablet keyboard), but doable.

ok then brilliant thanks, see i do use it alot for graphic design but only when im out of the house sincei have a dedicated computer for that, other than that it will be for messing around on, playing games, youtube and web browsing so think i will have to get it btw wat do you think on the price?
£399.99 for the tab and dock/keyboard

[Q] eee Pad right for my lifestyle?

Hello, i was hoping to get some advice with this choice i have.
I need a device to replace my old/dead 15" laptop. Bought years ago for £400, pretty weak AMD processor and integrated graphics i use it for browsing and entertainment purposes. Basically, facebook, news and watching films. It does rarely get used for work, mainly typing out a few documents and a quick spreadsheet if i am trying to work out some finances. Things i am confident polaris office can handle. I do also use the HDMI out when i want to play a film on a big TV, however usually standard def or occasionally 720p
I am in the military so i move about a lot! My current laptop last around 2 hours on a charge so i get very bored on an 18 hour flight as you might expect! I have a SGS II so i already have a nice catalogue of apps. So my question to you, owners of shiney eee pads now that the glaze of new ownership may have left some of you, do you think your device could replace a laptop for someone like me?
Can it output via HDMI port without making you tear your hair out?
How often do you have to reach for a windows device because your tablet/dock fails?
Does it power your external hard drives well enough?
If i bought one, it would be my only mobile device, is it up to functioning on its own?
Do the bugs ruin the experience?
Thank you kindly!
hurry up and get one, it will be perfect for you.
Yes to all your questions and no for the last.
You will love the battery life of the tablet + dock
Inviato dal mio Transformer TF101 usando Tapatalk
Yes, it seems to be perfect with the keyboard, especially with the looong lasting batteries
But read the forum about the office ... some people don't like it ... and check out how to print with this baby ... I haven't a clue how, because I use Windows for that.
And don't worry too much about bugs ... I would be more worried about getting a TF without too much light bleeding in the display.

I bought my TF to replace a defunct laptop and would never go back to a laptop now. I originally bought an expensive laptop with alot of memory for playing games and as with most high end laptops it never got used for anything other than web, emails, documents and the occasional video. The ASUS can handle all this and much much more. Facebook is handled easily either through the FaceBook app or on the browser (I use the latest Opera Mobile which works very well), Pulse (free on the Market) handles News beautifully on a Tablet and Movies look very nice. I have never used it to watch high def movies but im sure it will play 720P fine as long as the movie is encoded correctly and the codec is supported on the Video Player. I use MoboPlayer which works alot better than the built in player and covers alot of codecs.
Trust me you wont look back and with the keyboard dock you can expect 15-20 hours battery life which would suit you very well on your long journeys. What I tend to do is use the tablet on its own until the battery gets low (around 9 hours normal use) and then plug the dock in to recharge the tablet. Once the screen is fully charged (takes round 3 hours while docked) you can then undock and continue or just use it while docked if you wish. The keyboard dock also makes a good stand if you want to put it on a desk and watch a movie.
The HDMI works perfectly with my Smasung 51inch Plasma. The first time I plugged it in it connected straight away and looks stunning. No problems at all although I think there are reports that new Panasonic TV's have problems but they may be isolated cases.
My tablet has only rebooted itself a few times and those times haven't been due the TF but to a custom kernel that had some bad settings. You have to remember that Honeycomb is still a VERY new operating system and there may be a few bugs but they will soon be ironed out as google are very good at updating Roms.
I have a 500GB external HardDrive (2.5inch with a single usb connector) and there is no problem at all with it being powered via the ASUS. You have to be docked as the USB connectors are only on the keyboard (so make sure you get one with the keyboard if you need this feature) but im sure you wont have any problems.
If you do get one (with the keyboard) then you wont miss your laptop at all if you are going to be using it for the things you mentioned. There is no laptop that can come close to the life of the TF and the screen is very clear and sharp which makes it ideal for movies and web browsing. The keyboard is very tactile and can hammer out documents very quickly and if you plug a usb mouse in you can even control it in the same way as your pc. A little tip, there is a button on the keyboard (top row, 4th in from left side) that turns the trackpad on and off which helps alot when you are docked and using your finger on the screen. My arm kept touching the trackpad making it do strange things and it took a while to figure out what was happening lol.
Hope this little review helps you make up your mind either way
Mark.
I bought this to replace my very old 15" powerbook G4, thats right, I said it....G4 hahaha. I knew that in no way was this a laptop replacement. I understood that this was more of a multimedia/entertainment device than anything else.
Purchasing this product with that in mind has was the best purchase I've made this year. However, if I bought this with the assumption that it would function the same as my laptop, I think I would have returned this a long time ago.
Surfing the web: Can't beat it. I used to get frustrated with the stock browser always crashing on me but I found Opera Mobile 11 and I've never looked back. Sometimes I do wish there was a full size browser for the tablet instead of mobile browswer but yeah, Opera gets the job done.....I know there is Maxathon or something that offers a full browser experience, but I've had issues with it so I'll stick to Opera.
Movies: At first I wanted to throw my tablet out the window but thanks to the XDA forums I found the means to convert my movies to MP4s. And with the update to 3.1, movies are near flawless. I do wish that the tablet could support all media files and play as smooth as my desktop but I only watch movies on the road. If I'm at home, I havea TV for that. It's acceptable.
Reading: eBooks are great, but PDFs are teh suck! The MyLibrary app is complete garbage. I've tried other apps but loading PDF magazines are always laggy so I just get pissed off and don't even bother.
Music: The speakers on this thing sucks.....get a nice pair of headphones.
Work: I've tried to use Polaris Office to do some spreadsheets but it was super troublesome. I guess if I got used to the way Android operated vs thinking of how Excel and Word works in Windows it might be ok. What I do is I just RDP into my Windows computer and work off the full version of Office.
Hope this helps
I also take flights occasionally and as you are aware...a laptop just doesn't fit in a modern airline seat space!! there is no lap left...but the TF is perfect!
Q:
Can it output via HDMI port without making you tear your hair out?
I do this at least once or twice a week...plug it in watch a movie on the TV...not issues at all.
Q
How often do you have to reach for a windows device because your tablet/dock fails?
It never fails but I do use the laptop every day due to an app that I need on android that isn't ready for prime time...if it was...I'd never use the laptop.
Q:
Does it power your external hard drives well enough?
Yep...I watch movies right from the external drive.
Q:
If i bought one, it would be my only mobile device, is it up to functioning on its own?
the ONLY weakness that I still have is the Office app...it doesn't have cut/paste capability. Once that's worked out....I'll be happy.
Q:
Do the bugs ruin the experience?
What Bugs? I never have bugs...
Thank you kindly!
You're welcome!
I have a TF,a rooted Nook Color, a laptop and a desktop. LOL, my desktop system might as well a doorstop at this point I never use it. My laptop is a decent machine but the battery life is dismal compared to the TF or the rooted Nook. I work from home a lot, love sitting outside and also really appreciate how cool running my TF and it's dock ar, no sitting in the sun while holding awarm laptop!
There are some windows programs I need to use regularly, I bought Splashtop HD and simply connect to one of my computers when I need to access these programs. Another plus with Splashtop HD is that I can use it to stream Netflix from my computer to my TF, I love watching a movie while lying comfortably in my bed and the screen on the TF is simply lovely for this purpose.

I highly recommend the AKG K319, which have a fantastic sound, nearly like a big high-end home headphone, e.g. Beyerdynamic DT-880. And don't get shocked by the shown price ... just google a bit ... I only payed 25 Euros
I was astonished how good the TF sounds with this headphones though it doesn't have an equalizer built-in.
Oh btw ... the K319 have a nice hardcase and an air plane adapter in the package. If I would loose them I would buy them again. But be warned, they need to burn in for about 50 hours to develop it's full potential. So don't get disappointed, when you first plug them in.
These are by far the best mobile headphones below 200$, no joke.
needs are manipulable... once u have the device, u'll have the needs to do stuffs with it *evil grin*
Check S/N
The asus transformers with serial number B4O.... Have been plagued with screen issues, from what I hear as long as you get a transformer with B6O, you should have no such issues.
Thank you all for your informative replies.
Are the newer transformers B60 then? I will be getting mine through PC world, who currently have no stock, so i assume when they get them they will straight off the production line.

I just got mine yesterday from best buy and it was in fact B60 with 3.1 update already installed. From what I've experienced these things sell-out pretty quick (at least thats what best buy told me) so they're always getting new shipments.
There is another thread on here regarding t different models, though I don't think there's much difference (my mistake) . Mine isn't terrible in that I only notice it in the dark (lightbleed) but if you're not on a budget, I'd consider the Galaxy Tab 10.1 as they seem to have better quality control. Do you're research though, I haven't done any digging myself.

Maybe, but if the tab will be your only PC, I think the TF is currently the best choice ... maybe besides the Arconia Tab, which doesn't have light bleed issues.
Another choice would be waiting until fall, when the next models will be available ... the Archos 3G e.g. looks promising.
Hey guys I don't mean to highjack this thread or anything, but I am probably getting the tf in the near future and I was wondering where I should buy one and what place has a good warranty where if I got a defective one I could get it replaced easily. And a little side question, I can make/edit/print word documents from this right?
Thanks for any help

It has Polaris Office preinstalled. From what I read, it can open MS Office documents. But so far I didn't find any hints how to print with the TF or if any printer wil be compatible on the USB. I think the printing topic is worth a new thread.
I found THIS to print to network printers ... I fear, that's the only way.
PS: Also have a look at THIS.

Well for starters noone can give you an answer since you have given no indication as to where you live. If you want to get it from a shop then any large electrical retailer should give you good customer service if anything goes wrong. I cant comment about buying it online until I know what country you live in lol.
You can easily create and edit word documents using the included Polaris Office app. There is no default app to let you print but you can either use an app called PrinterShare (or similar from the market) or look into google cloud printing.
EDIT: Google cloud printing works extremely well. Just go *HERE* and install Google Chrome on your pc. Then enable Cloud Printing from Chrome and print a test page to make sure its set up using the email address that your Tablet is set up with. You then need to install an app which supports cloud printing such as PrinterShare or Cloud Print BETA and you are good to go. Tested this with both PrinterShare and Cloud Print BETA and both work fine.

Amazon has very good customer service from what experience I have with them and is usually quite quick with replacements if anything goes wrong. Their warrany will be exactly the same as any other online retailer. The only problem with buying online is that you wont know what model you get until it arrives at your door.
If you really really want the B60 model then your best bet is to goto a store and ask to view the product in the box to make sure of the model. Some places may not oblige but most should. Saying that, I have the B40 model of tablet and have had absolutely no problems with it so far (touch wood).

[Honest Answers] should i buy a tablet?

hi. i finished school with good grades so my dad told me he will buy me what i want (but not ANYTHING like 1000$ or something)
anyway, i told him i wanted a galaxy tab 10.1
i waited until it arrived then i was going to go and buy it then my bro told me "Do you really need it?"
so i head to the store and before buying it i remembered what he said and i headed home without buying it.
it have been days and i am over my head thinking and especially that i can buy anything else" i need" (but idk what i really need) and that my dad offered me to deposit in my bank account the same price of the tab in case i did not buy it.
here is why i want it: games, web browing , chatting.
do i really need it ?
If you don't have smartphone it will be a whole new world for you and you will love it. Now if you are a techie with a lot of gadgets its simply going to be an accessory, a very convenient one still. then comes all the in depth customizing. It could most likely eliminate the use of others if you can find its use. At the same price you can get a good laptop or even a better super phone. Its all up to your standards of living, if you can use such a product productivly and willing to put the time into getting to understand the product, standard ergonomics.

i had samsung 7, and now 10.1. For myself i would buy it again. But it wont answer your question.
Read following feature list. If you will use following features regularry, its for you.
- reader : comfortable way to read books ( write anot.) you can keep thpusands of books with variouse format
- light weight : important, if you travel often
-good access to internet, mail, exchange
- remote access over vpn to remote desktop etc
For me, it is useless to have netbook. I have also laptop, but heavy i7 proc, 16Gssd. Its hardly portable, but i run on it network simulation.
Personaly if i would be fresh graduate, i would wait. This market is really new.
I love my Tab but if you don't have a computer or a laptop I would get as lightweight of a laptop that you can afford. A 14 inch screen around one inch thick would be a great portable sized one, I have an HP that size and it is great.
But if you do have a computer/laptop already then the Tab would an awesome addition, but it is really a toy IMO.
Love my tab
I love my Tab. I never bought into the smartphone craze, mostly due to the price of data plans, the Tab allows me into the world of smartphones, just on wifi instead. Between Netflix, games, browsing on the net, reading Game of Thrones on the kindle app, RSS readers I have not used my computer nor my PlayStation all summer long. With all the customization I am very happy with my decision, save for no love from an actual Netflix app or HBO GO.
I say yes and here is way. Tablets are changing the consumption of media, and they do everything from web browsing, email, IM chat, video calls, movies, tv shows, games, media storage, news, books, and on and on. My gtab is playing second fiddle to my iPad right now but it is a really nice convenient way to be connected.
You say you don't really know what you need...so it sounds like there's really nothing you need. I suggest you do buy it! It's pretty sweet! You could use it for many things on a daily basis. You said you finished school, I don't know if you're going back or not, but you can also use it to take notes in class instead of wasting paper.
If you buy it you have 14 days to return it without a problem. If you buy it at a Best Buy they won't even charge you for a restocking fee so give it a try!
While it is definitely true that no one NEEDS a tablet I have found it to be a fantastic device and worth every penny. I was always an apple person and was super excited about the ipad until I discovered it was basically a big phone. So I waited for something more approaching a computer to come along and finally decided on the tab.
Pros
1. Super light weight: makes my netbook seem like a brick. This is majorly useful for heading out of the house and for holding while lounging around or whatever.
2. Fast for email and web browsing.
3. Emulators - plays snes and genesis games... what more do you want.
4. Touchscreen - with keyboards designed for honeycomb e.g. thumbkeyboard it is surprisingly easy to type. Browsing etc feels great.
5. Always on and ready to go (though mac laptops / chrome are simillar)
Cons
1.for writing it is still not quite able to give a good experience (though that should be obvious) it struggles with large documents and Google docs is badly implemented. For instance I was reading a manuscript on here marking places that needed editting using polaris office (included free). It worked nice as a reader but did not inform me that it failed to save the last 20 of my 60+ bookmarks.
2. More bugs and lag than on a fully fledged computer, but not too bad.
3. Not post-pc enough to justify purchase over desktop or laptop depending on what you already have - in terms of what you can do, the tablet is no replacement for either. But if you have them already you will find you use them far less.
My suggestion (as a GTab 10.1 Owner) is... don't buy a Galaxy Tab 10.1
Get a Nook Color... root it, overclock it... etc... you'll learn much more this way and you'll save several hundred dollars
... or get the original galaxy tab 7, which you can find for less than 200 dollars on craigslist.
and maybe get an ipod touch with your extra cash and have the best of both worlds. I dunno, up to you.
Either way, at this point 500 is too much to pay.
I'm disappointed there is no official netflix app, no official google voice support... lack of quality tablet apps, and I'm worried about Samsung supporting the device once the next version comes out.
Consumption v. Production
Nice contrast between pros and cons. About the question, really depends on what you plan on using it for. I think the tab is more often used for information consumption versus production. I use it for work as a sales rep to view email and work files quickly and easily. I tether it through my HTC Inspire and almost always have it connected. Again, more for information consumption versus production. However, I know there is a docking keyboard I may get down the road, and not carry my laptop anymore! And, its cool to pull up videos/pics/industry news on the spot to show clients without the hassle of booting up a laptop...

so should i get a laptop/ computer or a tab ?
No. You NEED a computer if youre attending another type of schooling. I'd get a tablet later because having a computer has more uses especially for school, where a tab(especially a HoneyComb one) is for play and mobility(or as I call lazyness).
When I had my iPad, I used it for internet because I was lazy to get my laptop out. Went back and returned it (I'm 16, so I have to be allowed to return regardless, within the return period, this case being 3 months ), thought I wanted an iPad 2, bought a laptop, and don't regret it.
Laptops last much longer if you buy the ones $600-$900(they are mainly above average these days).
In short, GET A LAPTOP, THEN A TAP YOU REALLY WANT LATER, like a quad core one hahah.

I have all 3. This is order of how much I use each device.
Laptop > Netbook > Tab 10.1
Laptop is still the best for overall productivity.
I like my tablet, but there is no way it could be my only device.

For games, get an iPad.
Big MMORPGS, got a Laptop.
Web browsing, a 15-17 inch laptop.
If you want it to be portable, iPad/XOOM, Tab 10.1 is too thin and easy to snap, also doesn't take a memory card, XOOM does.
Chatting, all will work.
If you don't have a dual core phone, get a laptop, but get a good one, my Toshiba Satallite for $600, dual core at 2.3 ghz I believe, 4 Gb of ram, 640(really 500)gb hard drive, etc. I don't regret picking my laptop over the iPad 2. Yes, I've had iphone 3g since launch, the 3gs, then 4 until February, had android since(like 5 android phones, all getting better).
I have a strong feeling you will be happy with a computer over a tablet. If not, you got 15-30 days to return But you will want a tablet. go play with a tab at bestbuy, not a game, just see what it can do, the speeds it does. My dads employee lent him a 10.1, I played with it for about 10 minutes, then got bored. Go try it out, tabs are limited, not computers.
If none of that made sense, I explained why to get a laptop.
To answer your Original Post(no, I'm not lazy, I wont us OP), GET A LAPTOP FIRST, THEN A TABLET LATER.
But seriously, he might be right. Do you really want a tab? Go play with one first then tell me what you think.

No. You NEED a computer if youre attending another type of schooling. I'd get a tablet later because having a computer has more uses especially for school, where a tab(especially a HoneyComb one) is for play and mobility(or as I call lazyness).
In short, GET A LAPTOP, THEN A TAP YOU REALLY WANT LATER, like a quad core one hahah.

This is the best advice in your case. Unless you already have a nice laptop, get yourself a MacBook Pro, because you'll need it for any school related and/or creative projects you will embark on in the future. Throw Parallels, then Windows, and any games you can think of on it, and you'll be set for a while. MBP may be approaching your dads budget, and I feel for him, but a 13" at Macmall/Microcenter with $50 8GB ram upgrade from NewEgg is the route I'd want my smart, savvy son to take.
If your laptop shreds already, tell dad to find you a $99 HP Touchpad, and spend the rest on an educational father/son trip to Vegas. ;D

WTF? That's a reason for NOT buying a Tab? Because it'll be more likely to break by putting massive force on either side?
I'd also like to see a survey of how many Xoom or Transformer or Iconia users actually, you know, swap SD cards on a regular basis.
I have a laptop (a gaming one at that)
A tab 10.1
and an HTC evo...
I use my laptop quite a bit 4-10 hrs a day
phone about 2-5hrs a day
tab 10.1 >2 hrs a day
so in the end was it worth the 499.99 no, am i glad i bought it yes.
im the kind of person who always has to get something when i see it that looks cool...
I do love how fast and easy it is to surf web and stream music. once i get the logitech Zagg bt keyboard case will i use it for school, yes. I would much rather carry that around than a 17" laptop...
The tab is very convenient when in bed and doing some last minute XDA reading (lol i love this site) or when playing a game on my laptop, to be able to look up something w/o having to ALT+TAB is wonderful... idk about some people but i think its pretty snappy when it comes to browsing the web (w/ dolphin browser)...
start with a laptop or a MBP (they are nice but im still a M$ person) if you go with a Windows machine check out HP's website they always have great GREAT deals on high performance laptops (HP makes very nice laptops and you would be wrong to think any less IMO)
(tons of free upgrades and i think they still have the deal going on where you buy a laptop and get a free 4Gb Xbox)
I love my Tab... only downfall for me is the homescreen/launcher (TW) is pretty laggy... esp when moving apps or creating shortcuts
hope this helps...
OK, I found an article on Engadget and that might answer most of the questions you are looking for. And then you can decide for yourself whether you need tablet or a netbook or notebook, etc.

Here's what I'll tell you,
Tablets are a great internet viewing device and fun to pay games on, but they are more of a filler between a phone and a laptop. If you do not have a laptop or your own computer I would suggest the computer.
At this point in time, if I were you, I would get an HP TouchPad for $99 (if you can find one) and play around with it. If you like it then good, if you don't you can sell it on ebay for most likely more than you paid or keep it because it is only $99. Then you have the rest of your money to get a laptop or Galaxy Tab if you find the need for them.

Windows 8 Build 81xx

I was wondering if any of the developers here have been following the Windows 8 stuff? I just read and article that they are going to release the first build of it this week at the big Microsoft thingy thats going on. They are releasing the build to developers, AND to the public!
Now, since Win 8 will be ARM supported, I'm wondering if were going to be able to put it on our A500's. I had originally wanted to buy a W500, but when your buying off craigslist you get what you find, and i love my A500 plenty fine, but i've always liked playing with the new Windows versions coming out, and the OS is pretty much designed for touch and tablet.
I know i'll be keeping my eyes open one way or another and hitting download as soon as i see they open a beta build up for us.
I don't think our A500's will be supported by MS, but since there aren't any quad-core tablets out there yet (production-wise, that I know of), MS will probably be using the tegra 2, which means it should be at least compatible.
So, it should hopefully run, but I think it's going to require a bit of hacking.
I really doubt that it will run on our a500's for one reason, hard drive space! Look up windows 8 demo on you tube and you will see that it is very similar to windows 7, just with a tablet friendly ui. You can still access good old windows with the touch of a button. I do have to admit that its looks pretty slick.
If you read into things, windows 8 is supposed to be -very- small operating wise, it's designed to gear towards tablet interfaces, it is able to run off of a flash drive.
I think our Acer Iconia will be one of the better suitors of Windows 8 thanks to its USB port. I would love to have Windows 8 ported on my Acer, especially if they are giving the build to the public.

Windows 7 only takes like 10GB fresh, with a good compression, or just a 32GB SD card for more space, it'd run just fine. Space isn't an issue.
They are, the BUILD conference is at 9am today, and they are supposed to release it to public and developers at it today.
I'll still love to see it runs on a quad core thing, with the ability to turn down part of the processor or dramatically turn down the clock when running on battery to save power.
I used this A500 long enough to realize that Android is just a toy. To be serious, it has a long way to go. It is so convenient to use for before nap browsing, that I don't turn on my laptop at night after all, but if you tell me I only have this for the week, I'll just say no. Better to bring both with me. Windows 7 is essential for me.

From a day-to-day use stand point, this just isn't true. However, if you need a power house, then I agree with you. But getting this tablet was one of the reasons for getting rid of my netbook. Outside of heavy gaming, which I don't do anyways, I do not see anything I can do on the netbook that I couldn't do on the tablet for everyday functions (except print, but I almost never do that either lol)
I got rid of my laptop (Was going out anyway) And got the a500 instead of another laptop. So far im pleased, i wished Skype would get working, i'd use it a lot more. I have a pretty nice powerhouse for a desktop so for anything that i need to do with some real power, gaming and such, i can sit at it for without a problem.
Id love to get a microsoft arc keyboard or something, small enough to use on my iconia, cause right now, since i have a laptop stand still, i use a old apple keyboard via the USB, its easier for typing more after all.
I'd like to see windows 8 on it, simply to see what i could do with it, i like toying with it, my A500 is my toy, rather than a significant use item, i can do what i need on it, so it serves its purpose, but it was still more a toy then anything else when i got it.

The one thing missing for me is the ability to develop android applications on the iconia. It's funny that you need another OS to code for Android.

Well unfortunately the builds thate came out were only on desktop uses, not for the ARM processor, guess was cross our fingers and wait.
Just like WP7 is limited to certain chipsets, I believe the ARM version might only be limited to Tegra 3 and some other faster processors.
I read somewhere from ms that win8 arm will run on many chips.as well as tegra. But not sure where this article went.I do know it was direct from Microsoft.

Regardless of OS, if your day-to-day function is coding/dev work, I would imagine you wouldn't be doing it from a tablet anyways Thats like a mechanic trying to run a full garage with a 25 piece "mechanics" tool set from Walmart lol. I am a project manager and I couldn't imagine not having a full laptop to do what I need it to do. I do also have a PC at home, hooked to my TV. But if I was not running an IIS server or if I didn't do web design work, I would probably not have anything else at home but a tablet.

That's not our tablet. That's the Acer Iconia Tab W500 not the A500. The A500 runs NVIDIA Tegra 2.
In any case, i'm still really hopeful for getting Win 8 onto the A500. With the ARM support, there has to be a way that this can be done eventually. I was actually starting to think that I might have to sell my Iconia and get a new tablet in March when its released. But now only time will tell. But just the possibility of running Windows here is awesome. =D

Well here is a small update. It does not help us Iconia A500 people, but it does help people with other tablets! And puts out hope that if Microsoft delivers a preview for the ARM version of the OS we may be able to test it out some.

[ASK]New to ASUS Transformer

Hi,
I am considering on buying transformer tf101 with dock in a couple days, to replace my windows xp netbook.
I am planning on using it, on working with documents(words), creating slides(powerpoint) and presentation(connect it to vga projector). Accesing my email. Reading pdf. Using skype on the go(i guess i need the transformers with modem installed)
My questions are,
- user interface from xp to honeycomb (or ics), any simmilarities?
- should i root the device in order to upgrade to custom rom?
- if that the case which custom rom would you suggest for me?
- until now i always work my documents with microsoft office, so which office apps would you recommend me ? Since there are several out there.
- what about presentation with vga connector, any experience?
- how long does the battery last, without dock and with dock?
Thank you for your feedback.

Similarities none.
Yes only if you want to I did because custom tf101 roms with custom kernels far surpassed stock in many aspects with honeycomb with ice cream sandwich there is alot to be done before they reach the same level.
Development is on going and icys is new so cant pick one at the moment to be all round better.
The tf101 and tf101g etc come with Polaris office which is good and reads MS Office docs but there are lots of options on the market comes down to preference.
Never tried it but I know you can wirelessly.
Its different between stock and custom but I can get 18hrs with dock probably 8-10 without depending on usage and settings.
Hope this helps
Also if your keeping the xp netbook as a backup or plan to keep it try windows8 on it you may find abit of a speed boost and its compatible with all programs from xp to the last win7

IMHO any Tablet will not replace a WindowsXP notebook completely. When it comes to typing, even a Transformer with a keyboard, is not as good as a laptop with Windows or GNU/Linux. The Android Office applications are designed for the touch screen, and not for a keyboard use, which makes them painful for nominal editing with a mouse and regular keyboard.

The Transformer has an HDMI output, and one can purchase an Asus HDMI to VGA adapter. I have done so and it works reasonably well, with the exception that it chops of the lower part of the Android display when projecting on the 'big screen'. That is a bit annoying, but as long as one keeps the projected material of interest on the top 80% of the screen it is not a problem.

It depends on your use. I drove an external projector continuous for about 8 hours and when the Transformer got down to about 20% battery I got nervous and plugged in the keyboard dock (which has a battery). And went for another couple of hours when our 10 hour work day was over. I still had battery power left.
I like my TF101 Transformer. I have ICS installed. I suffer from the reboot problem (with reboots once/day) IF I never switch OFF my transformer. But if I switch OFF my transformer a few times/day (when walking to work, when walking home from work, prior to going to bed at night) then I don't have the reboot problems. Asus are working on the reboot issue.
Good luck in your consideration process.
I think a TF101 with the dock is great for reading and sending emails. Much quicker than booting up a winxp machine, even from hibernation etc.
I use my Tablet primarily for reading pdf's, books, email, calendar and useful for all the available apps like google maps etc. I would definintely not buy one with the mindset for using office on it on the go, because it is no where near the standard of using Microsoft Office and probably won't be for a while. In saying that I use it quite a lot for word typing etc. anywhere there is a decent wifi hotspot as I use splashtop to remotely access my pc/laptop, and thus have access to all the programs on my windows pc, however you need a decent wifi connection for this to work well but when it does work well it is just like running windows on your tablet (if using the dock).
Cheers,

Polaris and Quick Office pro on par (with Polaris i have some saving probs, but it has a nice and quick interface - Quick Office is good with Googledocs and Dropbox, sometimes is has probs reading the right extensions). Third place: documents to go
You can use office for simple creating and editing. Writing a letter is no problem. Using open/libre office on linux/windows with mouse is way faster and easier.
Silverlight doesnt work properly: some things do work, some things don't. You have to find alternatives or 'workarounds'. For my work (teacher among other things) it replaces my netbook (with linux/windows) almost completely.
I love the silence, the coolness, the easy to pick up (still easier than a netbook), the battery (16+ hours with dock - so: no strings attached )
I think in the whole: my productivity jumped 15%+ (email, reporting, calendar, todo, making notes, individual instructions). pe when i write a note (i use Jotterpad HD a lot) i can send it way quicker than on a netbook (email, contactlist is under my finger). The intensity or quantity of communication jumped around 25%.

1. they are both... graphical? lol. Well thats pretty much where the similarities start and end
2. I dont think you have to, but Id recommend it to get a different recovery, which has a lot more options than the stock.
3. Youre gonna have to try them out yourself and see which fits you the best.
4. Alternatives to office? Remote Desktop from the tablet to a Windows PC. yeah...
5. Dont know.
6. My battery lasts anywhere between 6 and 10h usage, depending on load. Idle it would last around 5 days (note: IDLE, as in, no usage).
Thats without the dock. I dont have the dock so cant give any information about that.
But in short: A tablet cant really replace a windows machine. Well, when I say that it obviously depends on your needs.
When I get my dock my TF will replace my laptop, as I only use that to browse the web and watch some movies before going to sleep.
But if you are in need of the microsoft office tools, for example, your best option is to buy a 10" netbook instead, or if youre like me and can remote control a windows PC most of the time, then the tablet is a good option again.
"if you wish to reply, then a tablet fails in comparison"
...did i read that right? was that about replying to emails? if so, i would like to wholeheartedly disagree.
Anyway, let me answer the OP in this way, i pretty much replaced my computer with the tablet for the following activities:
* media consumption (watching/downloading movies) little caveat of maximum of 720p. 1080p is hit or miss. I typically do HDMI out for this to my tv. it's excellent with dice player. i recently got a netflix account going. aside from the fact that there's nothing on netflix i really want to stream...the device works very well with the service.
* web browsing - not as quick as computer, but definitely a good experience. i tend to frequent media-heavy sites (flash videos, etc) and it manages to chug along.
* light document editing. again, touch screen is not the same as a mouse, and android, even with a mouse/touchpad, is just not designed to work with the input device. word processing, with the right app, is definitely doable. spreadsheets, and presentations...probably a bit much.
** get yourself a wireless printer (they've gotten cheap over the years) and an app called PrinterShare. very nice combo.
* games...oodles of fun

Coming from a Win XP netbook, you can expect a lot more performance on the TF with ICS.
Even better with the lastest custom ROMs.
Can't recommend a stable one because they are all still in development fase. Maybe Revolver 4 1.3.1 or ARHD 3.10.
You'll have to take some time to adapt, as Android has touchscreen based UI.
But overall you will have a much improved experience for sure.

You can use office for simple creating and editing. Writing a letter is no problem. Using open/libre office on linux/windows with mouse is way faster and easier.

i agree with you, but still i want to travel only with my tf101 and left my linux/windows at home.

also using your tf101 for presentation? this is important because i also want to connect it with projector, which mostly in my place use the vga connector. any experience ?

yap. the long lasting battery alongside with the silence and coolness are several reason why i consider to go for tf101.

4. Alternatives to office? Remote Desktop from the tablet to a Windows PC. yeah...

But in short: A tablet cant really replace a windows machine. Well, when I say that it obviously depends on your needs.
When I get my dock my TF will replace my laptop, as I only use that to browse the web and watch some movies before going to sleep.
But if you are in need of the microsoft office tools, for example, your best option is to buy a 10" netbook instead, or if youre like me and can remote control a windows PC most of the time, then the tablet is a good option again.

. the main reason on considering the tf101 for me is to replace the netbook that i usually travel with. so you are suggesting that tf101 cannot replace my netbook for the heavy ms office work.
i wont suggest you to use android tablet for document editing.. its not that good yet.. you will be frustrated.. simple editing is ok, adding few words.. formatting not good.. document viewing is ok, though not really 100% the same as you see on microsoft office.. varies about 80-99%
other than that, it's cool..

* games...oodles of fun

i will try to find the office editor which optimally utilize the tf101 dock keyboard + mouse, but the wireless printer function sound very interesting!
thanks for your opinion.

But overall you will have a much improved experience for sure.

thanks for the reminder, i think i post this on the wrong forum section. It should be on the Q & A. .
i hope i can still get various user opinions and experiences, especially on:
* is it possible replace my netbook with tf101, only for the light editing office functionality.
* and experience on using vga connector with tf101 for presentation
and i hope this information to be useful for others,
thanks.

about 80% and up. that's already good enough, i assume. .
For word processing, I think Kingsoft Office is closest to Microsoft Word, and Kingsoft Office is free to download from Google Play Store.
You definitely will want to use an actual keyboard though, so you can see more of the screen as opposed to having a virtual keyboard clog up a big block of it. You don't have to buy the ASUS keyboard attachment. Any standard Bluetooth keyboard works too, like this one.

For spreadsheets and presentations, there are solutions out there, but I haven't found anything really great yet.

[Q] Nexus 7 as Laptop replacement?

Hey guys, I wanted to get your guys' opinions since i havent gotten a chance to get my hands on a nexus 7 yet. I am a Graduate Assisstant at my college and i graduate in december. With my GA position i was given a laptop to use, well I was wondering what you guys think about using a Nexus 7 as a replacement for a laptop when i graduate since i have to return my laptop. I do have a desktop that runs linux, so for any real computing power i can use that, but for laying in bed, browsing the web, email, watchign youtube, hulu, and other streaming sites as well as visiting lots of forums, do you think the nexus 7 is suitable as a daily device for that? thanks

Since you already have a desktop I would say replacing the laptop with a Nexus 7 would be fine.
Agreed for those, but no tablet is a replacement for a laptop.

Agreed, there are nice office suites in the play store for any document you need, lots of power and it just runs great. Also to, it has NFC built in for beaming files and paying for stuff w/Google wallet.

I'll eventually get a laptop but right now just dont have the money to get one that would be suitable or what i would want spec wise. So i figure with the low cost of the nexus i would use that in the meantime
I am a grad student and school teacher. I bought a tab to replace my laptop because I didn't need everything the laptop could do. My wife has a desktop, so I use that for doing any heavy tasks. I use my n7 with a bluetooth keyboard when in grad class and as a notebook for recording nots and ideas when working g with students.
I originally had a 10 inch tab, but that was too big. Love the n7,and I do not feel like a need a laptop.

For what you said you'd use the tablet for I'd say yes but get the 32gb version cause you never know when you'd need the extra space
I bought my n7 to compliment my atom netbook for my university course. One Bluetooth keyboard and an otg cable and I haven't even turned my netbook on in over 3 months. Office apps are good enough for editing and some changes to PowerPoint presentations etc.
Half of the time now I don't even take a bag to Uni, my n7 in my pocket and I am good.
I have 3 computers at home (wife and kids use them) I find most of my browsing, YouTube etc. Is being done on the n7. My comps I use only for mmo gaming and large projects.

Tablet is nice but it will never replace a PC/laptop for me. If I'm home alone, I am still always on my desktop. I'd rather sit at my desk with a sound system to listen to Pandora than being alone on the couch with ear buds. There are still many times I need to use my PC because a page won't display correctly or is difficult to use.
While I love my N7, it's still for casual use. It will never replace a PC for me unless I have no choice.
For sitting on the couch or in bed, a tablet will probably be good enough you.

Honestly if I had a hard keyboard for my nexus 7, I wouldn't really ever use my laptop. Jellybean is a pretty good operating system getting better everyday, serves as a pretty good windows replacement.
I use my tablet for most things but still can't completely replace my laptop yet.

I use my nexus for internet now more then my desktop, laptop, EP121 combined. Only thing it hasn't taken over yet is my pen and paper character sheet duties. So yeah for what you listed it will do fine.

I've got a Nexus 7 to replace my Asus EEPC 701 as my travel partner .
My major task for my travel partner is look for a map , get some simple translation , upload picture from my DSLR to my facebook account .
And now , all these task are completed by my N7 . And it is always on , the battery even can survive a single of heavy usage !
But of course , I would still keep my EEEPC , since it is still a standard IBM PC , there are still lots of works that require a standard computer to complete . For example , briefing with VGA out , connect some uncommon hardware (e.g. 3G usb modem , printer with no network) .
one last thing i do alot also is use torrents, is that something that can be easily done on the N7. I saw utorrent just released a beta for android, so i assume that this is a task easily done now on the N7. Thanks guys i think i am going to go with the N7 as my go to mobile device. For only $250 you cant really beat it.
On another note, is anyone using the tablet UI, and if so what do you like better by chance?
Nutshell version:
In most situations laptops are orverkill. Web browsing, torrenting, music, gaming can all be done BETTER on the N7. You don't NEED a laptop for this. CREATING a lot of content then you'll NEED a laptop. The N7 can handle SOME of this but when you get into doing a lot of it it's clunky and you'll run into limitations.
TL-DR version:
An N7 is NOT a laptop replacement. If you're looking to replace an entire laptop, just buy a laptop. HOWEVER... if you realize you don't NEED a laptop.. the N7 is perfect.
Here's a little illustration to help:
I personaly have come to realize that I don't NEED a laptop. I have one.. but it never leaves my house. When I go out, I take my N7 instead. My needs on the go are different than my needs at home. I realize what I need (I say "need"... but who really "needs" luxury devices like laptops and tablets though) is a beefy and powerful desktop at home and some periphery computing accessories like a chromebook and a good tablet. If i want to do graphics, music or gaming.. I do it at home on the desktop. If i'm on the go, i'm not trying to do graphic editing or create music... i'm consuming content or gaming.. the Nexus is perfect for this. If i'm trying to create content on the go... it's not going to be heavy duty stuff.. it's most likely going to be document editing or coding.. the chromebook will do nicely.
I hope that illustration helps. Thats a real world use for the N7 as opposed to something unrealistic like trying to do all of your college work (i'm also in school.. the N7 can handle some things like documents, but it's DEFINITELY better to use a full computer/laptop) you're going to run into limitations you'll be forced to work around.
^ well put

It comes down to a decision about content consumption vs. content creation and which & when you do more of. Because of variability in what people do and how much they travel around, I don't think there is a one-size-fits-all answer. The need to use a single PC application that can't be substituted for with a tablet app can easily force the decision.
Three years ago I was down to two computers - a laptop and an android phone. When the laptop finally died, I switched to a deskside, even though I knew I would sorely miss it for one kind of multitasking: watching TV and web surfing simultaneously.
Why? Screen real estate! You simply can not be as productive (say as a programmer) when you need to refer to several things simultaneously (docs, code, deguggers, etc) on a single 15-17" diagonal screen. Multiple monitors are a game-changer when it comes to productivity. (Sure, you can use stacks of windows or multiple virtual desktops on a laptop, but switching back and forth between them is lost time).
Along the same vein, appreciate that Android style multitasking - a single activity on the whole screen - makes cut-n-paste operations or quick referral to info in a 2nd app clumsily slow. A tablet (Android or Apple) isn't productive for work that needs frequent use of that type of activity.
Same goes for using a finger for text entry - pathetically slow. If you must capture notes of any length ("content creation") on the tablet, use a physical keyboard.
Still, I missed surfing from the couch, and a 3-in android phone screen wasn't cutting it. Tried Google TV for a while, but sharing the same display just seems unnatural and is an irritation to a 2nd person watching the same TV screen.
So, now I still don't have a laptop - just the big iron for being productive (read: not in front of the TV!), and an entertainment/reading device that can be used anywhere - couch/bed/crapper.
In a way, that's good as it helps enforce a decent separation between work and play.
At this point, I miss the laptop only for situations that require both a full-up OS and portability. I don't need that for work; but if I did I probably would have all three.
If it came down to a matter of money, and I could only afford one, it would probably be the laptop that got the nod.
