hi. i finished school with good grades so my dad told me he will buy me what i want (but not ANYTHING like 1000$ or something)
anyway, i told him i wanted a galaxy tab 10.1
i waited until it arrived then i was going to go and buy it then my bro told me "Do you really need it?"
so i head to the store and before buying it i remembered what he said and i headed home without buying it.
it have been days and i am over my head thinking and especially that i can buy anything else" i need" (but idk what i really need) and that my dad offered me to deposit in my bank account the same price of the tab in case i did not buy it.
here is why i want it: games, web browing , chatting.
do i really need it ?
If you don't have smartphone it will be a whole new world for you and you will love it. Now if you are a techie with a lot of gadgets its simply going to be an accessory, a very convenient one still. then comes all the in depth customizing. It could most likely eliminate the use of others if you can find its use. At the same price you can get a good laptop or even a better super phone. Its all up to your standards of living, if you can use such a product productivly and willing to put the time into getting to understand the product, standard ergonomics.

i had samsung 7, and now 10.1. For myself i would buy it again. But it wont answer your question.
Read following feature list. If you will use following features regularry, its for you.
- reader : comfortable way to read books ( write anot.) you can keep thpusands of books with variouse format
- light weight : important, if you travel often
-good access to internet, mail, exchange
- remote access over vpn to remote desktop etc
For me, it is useless to have netbook. I have also laptop, but heavy i7 proc, 16Gssd. Its hardly portable, but i run on it network simulation.
Personaly if i would be fresh graduate, i would wait. This market is really new.
I love my Tab but if you don't have a computer or a laptop I would get as lightweight of a laptop that you can afford. A 14 inch screen around one inch thick would be a great portable sized one, I have an HP that size and it is great.
But if you do have a computer/laptop already then the Tab would an awesome addition, but it is really a toy IMO.

I love my Tab. I never bought into the smartphone craze, mostly due to the price of data plans, the Tab allows me into the world of smartphones, just on wifi instead. Between Netflix,games, browsing on the net, reading Game of Thrones on the kindle app, RSS readers I have not used my computer nor my PlayStation all summer long. With all the customization I am very happy with my decision, save for no love from an actual Netflix app or HBO GO.
I say yes and here is way. Tablets are changing the consumption of media, and they do everything from web browsing, email, IM chat, video calls, movies, tv shows, games, media storage, news, books, and on and on. My gtab is playing second fiddle to my iPad right now but it is a really nice convenient way to be connected.
You say you don't really know what you need...so it sounds like there's really nothing you need. I suggest you do buy it! It's pretty sweet! You could use it for many things on a daily basis. You said you finished school, I don't know if you're going back or not, but you can also use it to take notes in class instead of wasting paper.
If you buy it you have 14 days to return it without a problem. If you buy it at a Best Buy they won't even charge you for a restocking fee so give it a try!

So I waited for something more approaching a computer to come along and finally decided on the tab.
Pros
1. Super light weight: makes my netbook seem like a brick. This is majorly useful for heading out of the house and for holding while lounging around or whatever.
2. Fast for email and web browsing.
3. Emulators - plays snes and genesis games... what more do you want.
4. Touchscreen - with keyboards designed for honeycomb e.g. thumbkeyboard it is surprisingly easy to type. Browsing etc feels great.
5. Always on and ready to go (though mac laptops / chrome are simillar)
Cons
1.for writing it is still not quite able to give a good experience (though that should be obvious) it struggles with large documents and Google docs is badly implemented. For instance I was reading a manuscript on here marking places that needed editting using polaris office (included free). It worked nice as a reader but did not inform me that it failed to save the last 20 of my 60+ bookmarks.
2. More bugs and lag than on a fully fledged computer, but not too bad.
3. Not post-pc enough to justify purchase over desktop or laptop depending on what you already have - in terms of what you can do, the tablet is no replacement for either. But if you have them already you will find you use them far less.
My suggestion (as a GTab 10.1 Owner) is... don't buy a Galaxy Tab 10.1
Get a Nook Color... root it, overclock it... etc... you'll learn much more this way and you'll save several hundred dollars
... or get the original galaxy tab 7, which you can find for less than 200 dollars on craigslist.
and maybe get an ipod touch with your extra cash and have the best of both worlds. I dunno, up to you.
Either way, at this point 500 is too much to pay.
I'm disappointed there is no official netflix app, no official google voice support... lack of quality tablet apps, and I'm worried about Samsung supporting the device once the next version comes out.
Consumption v. Production
Nice contrast between pros and cons. About the question, really depends on what you plan on using it for. I think the tab is more often used for information consumption versus production. I use it for work as a sales rep to view email and work files quickly and easily. I tether it through my HTC Inspire and almost always have it connected. Again, more for information consumption versus production. However, I know there is a docking keyboard I may get down the road, and not carry my laptop anymore! And, its cool to pull up videos/pics/industry news on the spot to show clients without the hassle of booting up a laptop...

No. You NEED a computer if youre attending another type of schooling. I'd get a tablet later because having a computer has more uses especially for school, where a tab(especially a HoneyComb one) is for play and mobility(or as I call lazyness).
When I had my iPad, I used it for internet because I was lazy to get my laptop out. Went back and returned it (I'm 16, so I have to be allowed to return regardless, within the return period, this case being 3 months ), thought I wanted an iPad 2, bought a laptop, and don't regret it.
Laptops last much longer if you buy the ones $600-$900(they are mainly above average these days).
In short, GET A LAPTOP, THEN A TAP YOU REALLY WANT LATER, like a quad core one hahah.

I have all 3. This is order of how much I use each device.
Laptop > Netbook > Tab 10.1
Laptop is still the best for overall productivity.
I like my tablet, but there is no way it could be my only device.

For games, get an iPad.
Big MMORPGS, got a Laptop.
Web browsing, a 15-17 inch laptop.
If you want it to be portable, iPad/XOOM, Tab 10.1 is too thin and easy to snap, also doesn't take a memory card, XOOM does.
Chatting, all will work.
If you don't have a dual core phone, get a laptop, but get a good one, my Toshiba Satallite for $600, dual core at 2.3 ghz I believe, 4 Gb of ram, 640(really 500)gb hard drive, etc. I don't regret picking my laptop over the iPad 2. Yes, I've had iphone 3g since launch, the 3gs, then 4 until February, had android since(like 5 android phones, all getting better).
I have a strong feeling you will be happy with a computer over a tablet. If not, you got 15-30 days to return But you will want a tablet. go play with a tab at bestbuy, not a game, just see what it can do, the speeds it does. My dads employee lent him a 10.1, I played with it for about 10 minutes, then got bored. Go try it out, tabs are limited, not computers.
If none of that made sense, I explained why to get a laptop.
To answer your Original Post(no, I'm not lazy, I wont us OP), GET A LAPTOP FIRST, THEN A TABLET LATER.
But seriously, he might be right. Do you really want a tab? Go play with one first then tell me what you think.

This is the best advice in your case. Unless you already have a nice laptop, get yourself a MacBook Pro, because you'll need it for any school related and/or creative projects you will embark on in the future. Throw Parallels, then Windows, and any games you can think of on it, and you'll be set for a while. MBP may be approaching your dads budget, and I feel for him, but a 13" at Macmall/Microcenter with $50 8GB ram upgrade from NewEgg is the route I'd want my smart, savvy son to take.
If your laptop shreds already, tell dad to find you a $99 HP Touchpad, and spend the rest on an educational father/son trip to Vegas. ;D

WTF? That's a reason for NOT buying a Tab? Because it'll be more likely to break by putting massive force on either side?
I'd also like to see a survey of how many Xoom or Transformer or Iconia users actually, you know, swap SD cards on a regular basis.

so in the end was it worth the 499.99 no, am i glad i bought it yes.

I do love how fast and easy it is to surf web and stream music. once i get the logitech Zagg bt keyboard case will i use it for school, yes. I would much rather carry that around than a 17" laptop...
The tab is very convenient when in bed and doing some last minute XDA reading (lol i love this site) or when playing a game on my laptop, to be able to look up something w/o having to ALT+TAB is wonderful... idk about some people but i think its pretty snappy when it comes to browsing the web (w/ dolphin browser)...
start with a laptop or a MBP (they are nice but im still a M$ person) if you go with a Windows machine check out HP's website they always have great GREAT deals on high performance laptops (HP makes very nice laptops and you would be wrong to think any less IMO)
(tons of free upgrades and i think they still have the deal going on where you buy a laptop and get a free 4Gb Xbox)
I love my Tab... only downfall for me is the homescreen/launcher (TW) is pretty laggy... esp when moving apps or creating shortcuts

Here's what I'll tell you,
Tablets are a great internet viewing device and fun to pay games on, but they are more of a filler between a phone and a laptop. If you do not have a laptop or your own computer I would suggest the computer.
At this point in time, if I were you, I would get an HP TouchPad for $99 (if you can find one) and play around with it. If you like it then good, if you don't you can sell it on ebay for most likely more than you paid or keep it because it is only $99. Then you have the rest of your money to get a laptop or Galaxy Tab if you find the need for them.

I have been tempted for the Galaxy Tab for a while but could never justify its expense. Now it appears to be quite a bit cheaper and Im sure I could rustle up some cash to sort out a purchase.
But with a 3 MP camera on the back and still no stupid PopCap games, is it worth it?
It's only a 7 inch screen - so it's quite a bit bigger than the Galaxy S, I guess it could be used for media, surfing the internet, Video etc, and it isn't the size of a laptop like the iPad...
To those who actually have it, what do you use it for?
Perhaps I can invent a solid reason for having more than "Im drooling, so I must get it".
Right now I have and use it as my one and only phone. I also use it for still continuing to learn Android development.
After my Spica got stolen, I struggled for a few months using a cheap Samsung 1080m I got for purchasing a new Samsung monitor, and after months of saving I bought the SGT. It hasn't disappointed me since, and I really think it's worth it because of the devs here in XDA.
If you're following latest tech/gadget news, sales of the SGT hasn't been too good and the return rates are high. But I'm guessing those are the typical consumers who don't go beyond simply buying the Tab and learning how to tweak it -- which should be normal case.
I'm assuming since you're in this forum, you would know your own way into tweaking, flashing ROMs and stuff, and that's a very big plus because honestly right off the box the SGT isn't really that sweet save for the tablet-optimized apps Samsung made.
Now as for how I use it, here's a little bit info about me:
During my undergrad CS course (which I graduated from 4 months ago) I was lucky enough to be part of a ladderized MSCS offering wherein we would be taking BS and MS courses alongside each other so that after graduating BS, we would only have a few months of MS left.
Fast forward, my MS is being paid by a university partner which in turn employs qualified students as full time consultants.
So how do I use my tab, well basically:
it's my primary phone, I bring it to me every where, I never put it inside my bag.
occasionally I would get emails from my adviser telling me I would have to present my thesis in some class, and when I'm on the go I usually just edit my existing documents and presentations on the tab, tweaking a few slides for the audience
I sometimes don't bring anything to presentations other than the tab, since I can load up my slides to thin clients hooked up to projectors deployed in my university, and I can control my slides from the tab
the camera, well, it sucks, unless you're in broad daylight, or in a place with extremely good lighting. i generally use it for taking pictures on random trips with friends, wherein I don't get to bring my SLR.
also used as my portable music player, as well as video player when I'm on the plane
when I'm in the train, which I take everyday for 2 hours back and forth from my house, I use the tab to read tech and research papers for my thesis
work requires me to be in constant communication so my email is always ready when im on the go.
hd games.
For some people the SGT may not be worth it, but for my case, it's worth every single peso I've saved. I think it's even worth me losing my poor old Spica.
The tab was worth it to me
And i use it everyday when im at work and usely watch like 4 too 7 shows on it and browse the net and also listen to pandora on 3g which i use it as my mp3 player and when i use it, it ony uses like 20mbs depends how many music you listen to but so far the 3g was worth it and lasts pretty decent which is ony 2gb but so far i ony used 300mbs of it which i had almost a month now.
I also play games on it, And when i get home i usely still have like 70% and sometimes down too 30% when i use it heavy so battery life is also really good on it which is the main thing for me because i use to take my netbook or laptop with me and the battery's ony lasted 3 too 4hours max so this replaced my netbook and laptop
I use too watch my videos on my zune hd which was nice but going from 3in too 7in is really a big improvement!
And the camera i say its pretty decent which i was suprized when i first took the first pic, And it beats some of my 5 and 6mp cameras, And i haven't had a problem in the dark taking pics sense the flash really lights everything up, Sure it doesn't hold a candle to SLRs but its pretty decent when you just want to take pics for fun or show people pics over the net.
But ya the tab is worth it to me and i also got a great deal from were i bought it from which is hsn so i get to pay payments and will get a 300$ back plus i got 70$ back from them because it didn't have some apps on it which was suppose to come with it, So it will be like 300 something ony

Personally, it's too big to be used as a phone.
It you get a t-mobile or at&t tab movieyou can always flash it to make phone calls that's a big plus. I have a Vibrant but now its a backup to my tab. I have also installed media hub and i am now building my movie library for when on the go. Very happy and i got it when it first came out and payed full price and not disappointed.

Well i first tryed one of those cheapish china made 7" tablets with good specs but once i got it i found out how bad a tablet could be, so 3 days later i went out and bought the SGT and quickly sold the china tablet at a very low price.
Now i am 100% sure that buying the SGT was the best move i ever made and really wish i'd bought it before i bought the cheap one.
Things i use my SGT for are:
Web surfing.
Watching Videos.
Music.
Bank account app.
Games.
Appointments.
Emails.
Navigation (Google Navigation, Copilot).
Comic Viewer/Reading.
Ebook Reader.
News Reader.
BedSide Clock and Alarm.
And my lastest thing is popping to the shops (PC World, Currys, Etc) and using the new Amazon UK App to scan bar codes to see how much cheaper i can get them online.
Phone calls and most texting i still use my HTC Desire, But i do sometimes use the SGT to text as the onscreen keyboard is better to type with.
But now i could not live without my SGT.
The Tab is my only phone, but since I only get 2 or 3 calls a day, that is not important.
Mostly I use the Tab for checking my e-mail, catching up on news, and being in a foreign country (South Korea) I use it to watch English movies and TV programs.
It is also a great e-book reader, music player and, when I can find them, a great game player. (Games are still under pending approval by the government here is South Korea.) It is also a great alarm clock.
When I travel I use a GPS Navigation app to keep track of where I am. When I go by bus, Google Maps keeps me up to date on where I am so I can judge when I need to call my friends to come pick me up. Traffic can get bad here on holidays, and my usual 2 hour bus trip turned into 4 1/2 hours due to Lunar New Year. (Happy Lunar New Year to all of you too!)
I also use it to check on my work papers and do any editing I need. Plus, the two note taking apps, one Speech to text, the other Sketch Memo, come in handy when I have an idea I need to keep.
And finally, the Korean/English dictionary has been a life saver more than once!!
The cameras come in handy when I go to the store and someone asks me to pick up something for them. I take a picture of the item and show it to the store clerks!
In short, I love my Tab, and think that anything bigger would be too big, and anything smaller would be too small. The size fits in my bag or pocket, it is big enough to read on, and the keyboard is usable, although not full size.
I have not rooted my Tab, and have found no real need to do so as the apps I can suit my needs.
I would recommend getting a case of some sort, just to protect it from accidents.
I have been using mine for the last 2 months and it mostly replaced my need for basic things done on the laptop - video, internet etc.
I can only say I am happy with mine, although I am curious as to what will happen regarding Honeycomb.

How do you use phone and data at the same time on the Tab?
I put my phones TMOUS sim card in it and only had cell service. The web would take me to a T-Mobile site only using a Euro ROM.
One thing about the xoom tab is, its not a 7in tab, 7in is a great size and i wouldint want anything bigger because if i want something bigger i just go back to my 12in netbook lol but the galaxy tab replaced it so for now on i want 7in tabs. And how would i put a 10in tab or bigger in my pocket? Lol the galaxy tab fits in my big pockets and for the pass 2 weeks i been using it as my mp3 player which i listen to pandora over 3g which is very nice
If i wanted a bigger tab i wouldve just got a ipad but i decided on the gtab and few days later i got my hands on a ipad at work to mess around with and it just seem to big. at first i thought the gtab was to.small when i was oordering it but when i got it i really like the size and its not to small or big.

It's not a phone in North America.
Most places elsewhere it has phone functionality out of the box. Even in North America, GSM Tabs can be flashed to allow phone calls.

Sometimes I do wonder about technology. I mean, what can I do better on a Tablet that I actually did before. I mean really, why do I need it?
But there is web browins, video, music, youtube, ebooks, online magazines, note taking, document editing, email and probably a lot more, like get an OBDII connector and you have a car monitor. All on a big 7inch screen.
The £200 worth of media you can get is great too!
Im very very tempted considering the price at the moment, but Im wondering what the next version would bring us.
I hear talk of Dual Core processors. I'd be interested to see if Samsung were really serious, whether we'll get things like full HDMI connectivity, WiFi N, 32 Gig memory on board, Better Cameras and Stereo Speakers.
What is the current Galaxy Tab like for Speakers, TV Connectivity and Wireless?

Personally, I love my Tab. It has truly changed the way I consume media.
Prior to the Tab, I used to switch between my phone (HTC Desire) and laptop when at home, and used my phone pretty much exclusively when out and about.
Now, I only tend to use my laptop for work, and at home or out I use my Tab for web browsing, video, music etc. My phone (now a Desire HD) has become very much just a phone for the most part, but there are always odd occasions (going down the pub etc) when I don't want to take my Tab with me even though it is portable.
I've had my Tab since it was first released, and I don't regret a minute of it. Having said all that, I probably wouldn't buy one right now, simply because there's likely to be a Tab 2 (and other 7" tablets) coming out very soon, and I would be inclined to wait now until they are released to see (a) if they are much better, or (b) if it causes the Tab's price to drop.
I'm still pretty certain that the Tab will get Honeycomb, and if it does I doubt I will replace it for another few months.

Internal speakers are ok - not going to win any fidelity awards, but definitely ok.
As to TV connectivity - you have 3 choices:
DLNA streaming
Analogue TV out (via additional cable).
HDMI TV out (via multimedia dock).

I'm sold on the 7 inch form factor. The camera has actually been outstanding because at the size and shape and the speed that it takes pictures you can really capture stuff you can't get with other cameras. It's blazing fast between shots so even if you take like 1 blurry picture if you keep snapping you get tons of good shots. There is practically no pause between taking shots.. It's crazy. Wish all cameras were like this.
I'm sold on the Camera. If I need better I go to my droid Incredible with the 8megapixel.
I'd like to be able to make phone calls but I have a verizon tab. I doubt it ever happens. Still love the size. LOVE IT... Skype with friends has been nice though.
I'm using it for development as well. I also get like 20 percent discount on the service through work. I pay less for my phone and tab than I would for an iphone.
Honeycomb is in our future I think. I like 2.2 though and it works great.
I've had my 32gb tf 101 for roughly a month after being one of the lucky ones to find the tablet in stores. Mine has no defects except the inevitable minor light bleed.
After trying to incorporate the tablet in my life it has become clear that tablets aren't for me. I always end up reaching for my phone. I've taken the tablet with me on my travels, on the plane with movies and music and all that great stuff. But I end up using my phone 90% of the time, my laptop for another 9% and the tablet for the final 1%. At home my tablet is very rarely used as well. It truly is a unique experience and 3.1 makes it far better. For the time that I've used it, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The display is beautiful.
I'm sure for some people it makes a lot of sense. But sadly it isn't for me. If anyone in the GTA, ON Canada wants it, feel free to shoot me a pm.

Many people are making an assumption that a tablet will replace a laptop or a desktop and will become a productivity device. When people mocked original iPad and called it an oversized Touch they actually weren't that far off; a tablet is purely a consumption and entertainment device. It's understandable that $500 is hard to justify for something like this considering your phone can perform at least 90% of the tasks your tablet can, albeit on a smaller scale. Hopefully OEM's will flood the market with decent Android tablets and drive the prices down to a more bearable ~$200 range.
Personally I find myself reaching for the tablet first and settling for my phone if I absolutly must. Most of the time my phone is set to bluetooth tether. To be honest I'd probably be better off with a 3g call-capable tablet and a pen-sized bluetooth headset. I almost never carry my laptop any more. But I rarely need to work on the go (other than answering emails)
THe only reason I reach for my laptop is Netflix. Otherwise, I spend most of my time on the tablet at home

I have a 360, a Boxee Box, and a Blu-ray player attached to my TV. All 3 have some overlapping features, but each one does something the other two can't do, and I enjoy having the different options. If one of them died, I could limp along with the other two, but I'd rather not. Point is, tablet and phone features will always overlap, you just have to figure out which task each one is better at and use it accordingly, then you'll find the tablet has a valuable place in your tech collection. I could live without the TF, but I'd rather not
I use it to read pdfs. most my books and journal articles are available in pdf format. The TF is by far the best pdf reader. I agree, you don't ready need it if you have good laptop. It's a luxury toy not pc replacement.

What (s)he said! I have 2 PS3s at home just because I didn't want to spend money on a bluray player only. A tablet is luxury for most of us... there are very few instances where a tablet would be beneficial (e.g. inventorying, showing clients photos or videos etc.). I personally love my tablet and have not used my PC as much. And with a baby around it's great to have a neat little gadget that's portable and has nice multimedia features.
He I don't really fault people for buying a tablet and then realizing it has no place in their life. I bought a used 7" Galaxy Tab for the gf a couple of weeks ago to replace her eReader. She thinks its neat, but she hasn't used it for anything but reading and to her, it seems like a waste. So I'll probably sell it and get her the new Nook reader. Tablets just aren't for everyone.
have you ever tried one of the thumb keyboards available on the market place? They make using a tablet sloop much easier and more practical
I'm pretty new to the whole tablet world, started with the NookColor and moved onto the Transformer. I've got to say it's mostly a consumption device but it's a fantastic consumption device at that. I love the internet on the 10" screen, love the entirely useable e-mail client included, love the quality of the games available and look forward to the continued evolution of the platform in general.
I loaded up the Autodesk sketch program and found myself cheerfully painting like a kid for the first time in decades - It's not that I can't do anything in particular on a tablet vs. another device, just that the tablet seems like a good fit for many more things. A magazine looks like a magazine, the internet looks like it does on my real computer and the remote access means I've got my fully useable desktop with me anywhere there's a wifi connection.
I think the only real downside it the portability. I grew up in an era where professionals carried around day planners so this is no big stretch for me but it is unusual given today's norms. Too big to fit in a pocket and too small to justify a computer bag.
All in all though if a phone and laptop do what you need that should be all you need. I'm not happy reading stuff on my laptop and personally prefer the touch interface when on the go so tablets fit my bill - for now.
use it as an in dash display in your car. That way it is always with you in a practical manner.
Then when you need to take it out of your car you can carry it into the library/coffee shop or whatever.

This was my plan all along (still the primary reason), but then when I got my TF, I found so many other uses. Yes I have a MT4G and a laptop, but the TF makes viewing things so much easier. I have just loaded up Supernatural seasons 5 and 6, so I can get caught up anywhere I want to. I love it!
I can't agree that the TF is not a productivity tool, it is my tool of choice for email and browsing at home and Google docs app is the business. I do have the dock though which turns it into a netbook but with better battery life and screen.
So far loving it.
First to android and tablets and ive turned on my computer twice in 3 weeks...
and both times was so that i could remote into and control my music downloads as i watched tv, surfed the net, and responded to work emails.
even last night, i downloaded a "read to me" story of the 3 little pigs and watched it with my daughter before she went to bed...
then i get to surf the net in bed again.. catch up with xda, news, sports, etc..
its a convenience..
this past weekend i took it on a road trip.. my daughter played games, i used it to book a room while using the hotel's wifi, snapped a few pics in the car, and even got it to tether off an older palm treo phone...(so i had internet in the car!)
i should be receiving mines any minute now...
already owning the g2x and a laptop the sole reason for me getting the transformer is to read pdf files. Being a college student textbooks become really expensive. Now days you can get a copy of the text in pdf for a fraction of the cost or if you just search the net you can find it for free. For me reading pdf files off a laptop is really inconvenient and the battery life is nothing compared to a tablet. Therefore it made sense for me to invest in a tablet and load all my pdf text onto the tablet. I save money in the end and I don't have to lug around a bunch of heavy ass textbooks everyday. So it's a win-win situation for me.

Won't happen unless subsidized, most phones are $450.
For me I've noticed that since getting this the battery on my evo lasts 3x as long. Surfing on this is much more pleasant.
As a university student, the tablet is an awesome device once you put the proper apps in it.
-a proper file manager (I've still yet to find one with drag&drop and proper shortcuts like windows explorer)
-a proper 'windows-office' like program and one that opens pdfs
-a proper video player (moboplayer)
-a proper calendar and agenda device
-a proper ebook reader (ie moonreader)
etc
The advantage of android apps is that they open much faster than if you were to run windows versions of the programs. With files are easily transferred over ftp, it is very time-efficient.
I'd say this device can easily take the place of my current netbook (and it has). The long lasting battery life and the tiny form factor (along with its lightweightness) really sold it for me

Try repligo readerd for a good pdf reader, you can even add notes, drraw lines and rectangles, write free hand on the pdf ...
i'm about to purchase a new tablet and i have issues deciding which tablet i want. i would like the ipad because it can run at least 95% of the apps in the app store. i like the iconia because it has built in hdmi port, usb port,external microsd,and a lot more features with in the os. but i'm afraid that most of the apps i want or need will either be not available or won't be compatible with honeycomb. Either or i like the way the acer looks and the price is cheaper than the ipad. i have an android phone Samsung Vibrant 4G and i'v had the iphone before...which is the reason why i'm debating on which tablet i want. i've seen youtube videos regarding the ipad vs the iconia but its not enough for me to make my decision. I much rather ask the experts and users of xda to get the final desicion. so what should it be?

So far, all android 2.x apps i've tried are working on android 3.x
The two problems are
* they are not necessarily compatible with the resolution of the tablets
* the app UI might have been designed for smartphone use (small screen, mobility)
Regarding the resolution issue, android 3.2 is fixing this by adding the new "compatibility zoom" feature (not tried yet, still waiting acer to release android 3.2 on the iconia )

I was in the fix like you when i was buying tablet, i opted for iconia but i am regretting now. Iconia is not at the fault but apps, cause not many apps are available for bigger screen.
That's why go for IPAD 2, it has so many more applications.

I've got both, and switch between them regularly. There are some things the iPad2 can do that the Acer cannot (some Citrix connectivity with my company), there are some things the iPad2 simply does better (WiFi reception, battery life). Then, there are places where it's a toss up. Then there are things like widgets and ability to control my user experience through settings, root applications, etc. that Acer delivers on. The SD card and USB ports are, of course, in Acer's favor.
On the whole, I find myself reaching for the Acer more often through the day, unless I know that the iPad is necessary, or if the Acer's battery is low. This, however, might be because I've owned an iPad (1 or 2) since early in the iPad's life (not the launch of 1, but close) and I've only had the Acer for a month, so there's a newness/novelty to it. The experimentation with ROMs, kernels, etc. also keeps the Acer more interesting from a tweaker's perspective, of course.
The Acer provides homescreens that are much more useful through their customization and dynamic screen content. The iPad gives an overall smoother interaction. Typing on onscreen keyboards goes to the iPad, I think, despite using SwiftKey, which offers word prediction, etc.
Screens are pretty similar in my uses, although the Acer is glossier(glare) and shows fingerprints more readily.
If I had to choose only one at this time, and money was not an issue, I'd probably stick with the iPad2.
Note, I use an Android phone, but I don't know that the integration is really better in one over another, using gmail and corporate accounts and calendars. In my situation, my corporate account did require the use of a third party exchange application due to some weird security issues. This may change if you were using an iPhone with iOS 5 coming with the iCloud system, who knows. But, if you had an iPhone, I would guess you'd already be heading to the Apple store.
i must say the acer changed my opinion of android tablets. Its fantastic! I bought mine second hand on craigs list. Well worth it.
After rooting the usb ports support all my usb drives, keyboards and anything else that ive tried. Thr battery life leaves something to be desired, but its still good enough.
Its my remote for xbmc, managing utorrent on my server and just putzing around on the web.
Im sold on the acer. Get the 16GB with the 100 dollar gift card and you will love it.
I also have groove ip installed and can make and receive phonecalls without having to find woorkarounds to make it work.
I have used ipads, just not enough to judge them. I did have a touch 4g but was never pleased with what it took to get it set up to do what this does.
I also love rooting and flashing different rom.
I have use of both via work, and have also used both for work and for home. They both have their strong points and weaknesses. I also use Citrix for access to work applications - multiple times per day - and I actually prefer the Iconia with 3.1 over the iPad 2 for this purpose.
IPad certainly has more apps, and some are phenomenally good value (including Apple's own ported apps like Garage Band). Some are mediocre, and quite a few are poor. In real life, however, unless you collect apps just for the number you own, most things can be done with either tablet.
The clincher for me is Steve Jobs personal aversion to Flash and Java. One of the main cloud-based professional apps I use is written in Flash. With the iPad2, my only work around that works (but very slowly) is to VPN into either the office Mac or one of the PC's. The Iconia runs it natively, quickly and effortlessly.
For entertainment, the Iconia won't easily run Netflix yet (it is possible via a hack only), but it effortlessly streams media from my home media server (Serviio on Ubuntu server, on an $70 Intel Atom board), including video, pictures and music. The iPad won't work with it (though it will with some other servers).
The Iconia scores hands down on connectivity. USB input/output. HDMI out without dongles. SD card expansion without dongles and with far les limitations on use. Bluetooth that will connect with stereo headphones, keyboards, mice and other devices while the iPad2 Bluetooth is deliberately crippled to not allow serial devices without jailbreaking and add-on apps from Cydia. That includes no normal Bluetooth GPS connectivity, and the iPad 2 doesn't have one built in (Iconia does).
Although I use an iMac much more than I use Windows, I find the reliance on iTunes for everything concerning interconnection really annoying (though there are ways to work around it, if you look hard). You even needed a PC with iTunes to wake up the darned iPad 2 when it arrived...
So it depends what you really want, and what you need. Personally, I'm finding that I carry the Iconia a lot more than the iPad2.

If you want to do weird and crazy things, then Android.
If you are a 'normal' user (ie surf, read, tunes etc), then iPad by a million miles.
Much much much nicer experience on iPad2 for everyday use.
Working with my Acer Iconia since one week. Never want to miss a fully functional USB Port. You can do so much more than with ordinary Tablet PCs or the Ipad .

I disagree on the 'normal' usage being better on the ipad. Surfing without flash and the need to sync your media through itunes makes both a poor experience. At least poorer than with the iconia.

For those considering battery life : remember the iconia is almost 100€ cheaper and got a LOT more connectivity than the ipad 2. And I heard about Acer lowering the price soon.
The lack of flash player and the inability to sync media without itunes makes the ipad2 worst than the iconia for me.

If you want boring interface get an ipad
If you already spent a ton of money on apps through iTunes get a ipad
If you plan on using the web browser get an android (I remember the joy I experienced with my ipad when trying to browse to local business web pages and not being able to see anything)
If your not using iTunes to buy overpriced music get an android
If your business requires Skype calling maybe you should get an ipad. (Guess Skype figures android tablets don't want the support)
If you want to buy extra dongle to use USB devices you already own get an ipad (sorry the USB port is a big deal to me)
If your a normal user get an android more out of the box support by a million miles
If you want to video chat with family members that only have a computer and webcam get android atleast with gmail in the browser they won't have to buy only one type of computer(which is ten times easier to get going then having mom trying to install software when your not around to do it for her)
If you want hook your tablet up to the tv by only using a five dollar cable get android
If you might prefer a seven inch tablet get an android
If you want to mange files on your tablet with a computer then get an ipad (perhaps someone can inform me been awhile since I used an apple product are users allowed to delete music of phone\tablet without the use of iTunes)
If you love excel spreadsheet and want that kind of experience get something you use can use iTunes for
If your already on XDA and know your way around adb and stuff get an android

I'm glad you mentioned the weight, I wanted the ipad 2 initialy, especially after trying one for a few days - I was comfortable with ios, since I have an iphone. Also you can hack them like any other device, plus plenty of apps.
However, I bought an Iconia, because of connectivity, expansion, Flash, and price, and I was keen to try Android, now that it has matured somewhat.
I love the Iconia for all the reasons I just mentioned, but I am shocked by its weight, I know there is only 165g difference, but it just feels really heavy, something I never even thought about with the ipad, so I did'nt take it into consideration when choosing a pad.
Bottom line is, if you are going to use it in your hands all the time, get an ipad, if its going to be used on its stand, and/or the weight does'nt bother you, definately get an Iconia
Hey guys, I had a nook color but after I got bored of all the experimenting with different roms, I found no actual use to it and sold it.
Prices of the Xoom have been dropping dramtically here and the gadget addict in me just cannot resist it much. I know that answers here are going to be biased but would you recommend the Xoom? Also, what do you use your Xoom/tablets for so I know what to do with it instead of getting bored of it like I did with the nook color.

I use it for a browser, really. The dual core makes the browser actually somewhat effective. Mainly that and games. Nothing a PC can't do better.
If I were you, I'll wait for the quad-cores and Ice Cream Sandwich to come out first and see how the tablet scene is affected.
Anyway, I use my Xoom for surfing the net, watching youtube vids, reading my ebooks and my comics. Oh and the occasional gaming of course.

All of the above and productivity too. I use it whenever I'm away from the office instead of a laptop and it works brilliantly. The BT keyboard and occasionally my BT mouse, Office Suite Pro and I'm set.
I even use it at work, where I get a really good 4G wimax signal on my Clear mifi, because our servers are sometimes so sluggish, I can browse the web a heck of a lot faster on the Xoom.
The Xoom has great hardware and computing speed which, when exploited properly using the right apps in combination with a home network, can actually afford its user nearly the productivity abilty of a laptop.
Before I get flamed, let me explain...
First you need to set your home desktop up as if it were a data base. Not a server so much, but there are great apps that can bring your home desktop right to your tablet. I will use examples, but do the research for these apps and see if alternatives might be better for you. (Most good productivity apps are paid apps, and not cheap, so when someone has shelled out for them, they naturally tend to stick with them even if competition has surpassed the ones they use. Just bear that in mind.)
Here's an example; I use "Phone My PC" to access my computer from anywhere. It's great. I mean really KEWL! BUT!- It won't download a file to your Xoom. So I use "Dropbox" for that. Now I not only have access to the files on my home PC, but I have a means to upload them to my tablet.
Simple enough.
I bought "Documents To Go" about 18 months ago, thinking they would continue to improve. They didn't. But there are a few other Microsoft editor Suite apps (Polaris Office is great, IMO, and ironically, it's free.).
Now I can actually edit the documents I pull from my home computer.
It's tedious compared to a laptop, make no mistake about it! Go here, do that, load this, etc, etc, whereas with your laptop everything is already right there, including the fast editor.
If you are actually looking for the versatility of a tablet regarding productivity, you simply can't do it without a keyboard.
I'm on my Moto BT keyboard now. The Xoom is "mouse ready", so the keyboard along with a nice compact Bluetooth mouse will make your tasks a lot easier.
Let's seriously take into consideration application...
I've been very proud to have accomplished tasks for work regarding productivity. I wrote that just as I meant it; "accomplished". It was an accomplishment, but I know that the next Excel spreadsheet I make from scratch on my Xoom will go faster. I also know that I will need to load that to a Windows machine to finish it the way I need it because all 4 of the Office apps I have are very much incomplete.
If a student asks if a Xoom can replace his/her laptop, I say "NO!" Networked like I say, you can accomplish anything that you could do on a laptop, but it will take at least twice as long, and that's after you get used to learning how to deal with it's limitations.
The apps are fantastic, though. I bought "printer Share" last year, and can print right to my home printer (and others) from anywhere in the world. I didn't have that on my laptop; wifi on the same network, sure. But now there are even free apps that will allow this in a limited capacity.
Anyway, that's my schpiel. Right now I put the Xoom at 30% productivity and 70% media, but the productivity capability is growing all the time.

Well I think a tablet is a luxury item. I bought it because I do not own any laptop or netbook, just my trusty desktop PC so it made my decision to get a tablet that much easier. If you have a laptop, you might think twice on dropping money on a tablet.
Something to think about.
I use mine for amusing the kids, a bit of web, youtube and kindle.

I owe a nexus 4 and also owe laptop and desktop pc. Is the nexus 10 gonna help me?
First of all I want it since in august I'll start university so it will help for books on pdf, taking notes and since I'll enter to computer sciences I expect to use it for others things that I'll reach on school.
But I don't really know what is having a tablet, maybe I can do it all with a laptop but sometimes I think watching movies, comics, books, gaming and surfing Web is enough + utilities on school for getting it.
Any advice?

I've got a beastly desktop, laptop, and a decent phone. The tablet goes with me to stores and such so I can look things up on the go, or to work (I'm a teacher) so that I can take attendance on it. Its much more mobile than a laptop while providing, with the right apps. most of the functionality.
I would wait to see what the next galaxy note tablet is going to be. You could use a bluetooth keyboard if you'd rather type your notes and use the spen if you need to jot down formulas or charts.
If you have a newer laptop, I wouldn't recommend getting a regular tablet like the nexus 10 if you want it for school.
Me personally, I have a powerful desktop with two monitors for my main bulk of school work at home. I bring a netbook to class for notes (I download the PowerPoint's and convert them to PDF. Using acrobat pro, I can type notes just like if I were writing on the print out). The netbook is a bit old and weak but gets the job done for now.
With something like the galaxy note, you can have everything consolidated on your tablet(PDFs, PowerPoint's,hand written notes, types notes, ebooks ect) all in a compact device. Then use your desktop for more productive things and you could probably sell your laptop.

Personally, I don't find tablets with (solely) capacitive touch screens to be useful for notetaking. They aren't accurate enough to take down diagrams and formulas much better than pen and paper. In fact, the best solution I've found has been using a LiveScribe pen to import those kinds of information into OneNote. On the other hand, if you've got any professors who are enamored of open-source formats like PDF, tablets are a great way to read on the go, and for that purpose I highly recommend them.
They're also great for most of what you named, but importantly tablets can go into "tighter" places. Your dorm room bed, a couch, or some other random place on campus are good candidates. If you've got a small bag, they're also one of those things you can toss in as a "just in case" if you need to do something your phone is unsuitable for, but don't want to bring your laptop for.
I'd recommend honestly looking into a Windows convertible, or, if you don't like the big M, go for an active-digitizer tablet. That basically means the Note at this point, unless you go hunting for one of Lenovo's offerings.
The Nexus 10 is a great tablet though, so buy with confidence if you feel a tablet is for you.

I only use my tablet around the house and it's perfect for the living room or the bed, when I don't want to carry my ultrabook with its superfluous keyboard with me. The ultrabook is pretty light, a little less than 3 lbs, but the Nexus 10 is less than half that at 1.33 lbs. I can have a nice big, high-res screen with me at all times, one that isn't as heavy as lugging my ultrabook around.
With a tablet, you too can have a computer at your fingertips at all times! :victory:
That said, I agree with Sher and Rirere that the Nexus 10 may not be the best for writing with a stylus, though I haven't tried it. I'd guess the Note 10 would be better for that, since it has a digitizer built in. I always suggest that you try these devices out in a store before buying. I don't think an Android tablet will help you in computer science classes either, as they probably don't do anything with Android, plus you'll need a stand to keep the tablet up and a bluetooth keyboard to get any serious typing done. All the other content consumption stuff you mentioned is perfect on a tablet though.
The fundamental question is whether you value having a high-res computer with you in more places, because it is more portable than a laptop but with a bigger screen than a smartphone, albeit a computer that isn't that easy to type on unless you get a bluetooth keyboard also.
I have a Nexus 10, a Kindle, a S4 and a good/average laptop, I can tell you that for what you want the Nexus is amazing, if you want to watch a movie on it you'll see how amazing the screen is, surfing the Web is great too, and Android is with some top games, so you can enjoy it easily. If you most want to read comics and books I'd recommend you a Kindle (not the tablet), which is really the best option. Nexus 4 is already a good cellphone, but there are things that after you get hands on a tablet you see how easily they can be.
About school now. Formulas and such has no better companion than pen and paper, I already played a little with a Note 10 on a store, and it's great to handwrite, but I still think that for my math counts using a paper is the best option. However about the computer classes you can use it! Search on amazon for a case with keyboard and there is one which I really like (and have), which is so good that I typed my fanfictions on it, also I used to learn java on my Xoom with an app called "Droid Edit", which is a text editor with syntax highlight, then I installed Terminal IDE and had compiler and everything ready to learn. Guess what? It worked finely !"
And at least, you can install Linux distros on it, so you can get some more things to be done! And also it works greatly .

I would try and wait till the end of summer to make your decision. Toshiba has just announced three tablets - one lower end tablet, a 2560x1600 Tegra 4 tablet and another identical one, but with a wacom digitizer. Asus has a new 2560x1600 Infinity Transformer also with a Tegra 4. HP has there x2 android tablet coming out which didn't look too bad. Most of these are due for release in Q3 of this year. And on top of it, Samsung is holding a "Galaxy and Ativ" event on the 20th. Ativ will be a Windows device and Galaxy is an android device. Besides the Galaxy camera 2, no one really knows what to expect. Hopefully a new note tablet with better resolution, cause the current resolution is a deal breaker for a lot of people.
The Nexus ten is now a good 7 months old, although will probably be better priced than all of the above. The Tegra 4 could be great, but also could be terrible. I enjoyed my Nexus 10 when I had it earlier this year, but I think there are much better options for a school tablet coming out.
Also, I believe Intel is releasing there updated Atom processor (what Netbooks and lower range windows tabs use) towards the end of the year and is supposed to have greatly improved graphics, power, and battery life. Some of the current lower end Windows tablets run full windows 8 (like the Ativ 500T and also has a wacom digitizer for about $550) and they aren't terrible, though can be a bit sluggish. There battery life is also comparable to an android tablet.
Lastly, for school, a windows tablet may be a better choice since you won't have any compatibility issues like with android browsers. If your teacher uses online problems, demos, or chat rooms, you could run into issues running these things. I'm leaning slightly more towards Windows at the moment just for those reasons, but it all depends on how these products compare. If the android tablet is much smoother and has better battery life for 2/3 of the price, I'll just wait to get home to do something not compatible.
I've been in the same boat looking for something for school and my netbook is holding me off till the new products are released. I would recommend doing the same with your laptop, unless you can't afford more than the $400 for the Nexus 10.

I honestl yplan to hold on to the N10 until December 2014 and THEN upgrade, since I dropped the $500 on the 32GB model.

If you don't mind hacking it up though, the Nook HD+ looks like a fun little investment to slap somewhere (like a wall or something as a control panel). It may not make the best tablet but the hardware is good.
+1 for the people recommending paper/pencil. I can't do formulas another way. OP however might want to look into the LiveScribe Sky and a tablet (or use their PC); I believe I saw an ad somewhere showing off live, instant syncing from paper to tablet, which I'll have to look into myself (got a LiveScribe Echo as a work bonus, so I'm sticking with that for the moment).
It's not just a question of having an active digitizer; while the Note pen will wow in stores, writing with a stylus for any duration of time can quickly become, well, annoying. Glass just doesn't have the same tactile feel that a good pen on paper will, you'll get the "clicking" sounds from contact, and you could generally be doing something a lot more useful with your electronic device (like typing bullet points) than scrawling into it with a digitizer.
Unless, of course, by tablet, we're talking about a Wacom drawing pad.

Everyone will of course have their preferences, so I'm not trying to argue right or wrong. However, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ATo3ohdwok has certainly influenced me to getting something with a wacom digitizer. She has some other videos showing note taking as well. I hate having a lot of printouts with notes on them. I also don't like typing notes on a computer but then having to draw out charts and math examples on a separate piece of paper. I'd rather have a device I can carry around almost anywhere with great battery life where everything in consolidated. It's also possible to sync to dropbox so you can get the notes on your phone(in PDF, not SNOTE format). Imagine staying on campus for whatever reason and wanting to do work for a class that you didn't bring your notes or text for. You could have everything in your Note tablet to include general handwritten notes.
Also, the note tablet comes with two different tips. One plastic that will feel like super smooth writing on glass and one rubber that has some drag to it that doesn't make "clicking" noises. I would prefer real pen and paper as well mostly because its what I'm used to, but I really like the idea of consolidating everything into one device backed up to the cloud that I can get anywhere. I'm currently doing it with powerpoint notes in dropbox and typed notes in Evernote, but unless I scan or take pictures, I can't get anything I hand write somewhere else.
Edit: I just looked up the Livescribe pen. That is pretty neat. I feel like I'd lose it though. I will continue looking into that as another option.
