Am I the only one excited by this phone? Looks pretty cool, and should be pretty nifty as a secondary device as well as for casual users.

$100-200 off-contract price, capacitive screen, all the features of a "real" Android phone... all it needs now is a subforum here on XDA and a port of Cyanogenmod
What do you guys think?
+1, Xda section for that phone would be awesome.
Coz its damn cheap, http://www.techit.in/huawei-ideos-the-cheapest-android-froyo-device-will-hit-india-soon/

I can hardly wait to see it in Europe.
It's a pity that there are no further information yet about possible providers, exact prices etc.
i'm also waiting for dev to make it rooted! hope xda would support it. it will be a cheap & fun toys to play with
This is the first phone that comes closest to bringing android to the power users who couldn't afford much more then the likes of e63 and e71 who come from countries where you buy the phone on full price..This has just been launched in my country and has been talked about a lot...the only thing stopping me to buy this phone right now is the community support I pray that xda developers understands the potential this phone holds and launch a community forum so I can be rest assured that I can find help.
Last time I frequented this forum was when I owned a pda2k and I held onto my pda2k not because it was so lovely but because I knew all my answers could be had at this forum.
I pray for the same enthusiasm this time around, please let me become a power user once again.
I have the Google / Huawei Ideos phone and loving Android. Would be great if we could get a howto about rooting this phone!
I just got this phone this weekend and upgraded from my (rooted, CM6.1-RC1) G1 that was giving me various kinds of grief and I gotta say, I'm not looking back. This thing is really responsive, has all the bells and whistles of 2.2 and is a really capable little device. My only problem has been the fact that some apps don't show up in the market because the device falls into the low-density small screen category of the market, and apps built against 1.5 or without a supports-screen in the manifest. I've been able to sideload apps that haven't worked without ill effect. I'd love to see root on this, just in case T-Mo decides to OTA remove the Froyo tethering love.
So the speed compares favorably to the G1 with Froyo?
Unless my G1 was acting really funky (which I can't discount, because it was being slow and crashy in recent weeks, even with a fairly fresh install of CM6.1) it's been much more responsive than my G1 was.
EDIT: I'm a fairly hardcore android user, though I don't use any really graphics or super cpu heavy apps, but it's ran everything that I used to have trouble with on my G1 without issue, for instance I couldn't leave an audio app running in the BG, it would end up either dying to getting killed off my the android system.
UPDATE! SuperOneClick works to root the stock ROM on this phone! Just need to add the appropriate string to the ADB Driver.

Being a complete noob, but loving the Ideos - what was the appropriate string you added?
I got huawei ideos with android froyo 2.1 from a friend. Is It possible to flash windows mobile rom in this device? If yes where can i get that rom? I do know how to flash windows mobile roms in htc pocket pcs, but not sure about huawei ideos whether it will support windows mobile os or not, and hows this device different from pocket pcs.

No one will ever develop a custom Windows Mobile ROM for this device. This may only happen if Huawei will launch a Windows Mobile device based on the same (or on a very similar) platform, and that's highly unlikely.
Plus one for this lovely affordable one!

I think this phone have much and much potential.
+1! Just 99 euro in Italy!
Hi!
Im just thinking about a own forum for Ideos X5. Its a great phone with really good specs for a low price. Its like the Zte blade but twice as good. It's also good for root because of the vanilla rom. So what do you people think?(Hope you understand, im not from a english speaking country)
//Isak
I completely second this. I'm getting mine this week and I'd love it if the phone had some xda support.
I know this phone is getting quite popular in the non american regions and might get more popular due to the amazing pricing.
Please give us a forum \o/
Yes! Would love a forum. Getting mine soon, looks amazing for the price.
Can't wait for some rom love - Time to replace my mytouch 3g. If this phone came out in the US I think we would be seeing a lot more dev support for it.
Yeah Its a amazing phone for an amazing price If it just come out some good roots and it would be more awesome
Yes! We need a Forum for it!
My friend just bought one of these and it looks pretty sweet, especially for the low price. hopefully it gets a forum and some attention from XDA Devs
These are great value in Australia really cheap. $299 outright from Crazy Johns. Will probably pick one up soon. Really want a gingerbread ROM for it though, please create a section.
Yes, would like to see a forum for it too - it's quite a bit cheaper than equivalent phones.
Yes, forum please.
I bought one yesterday, here in Western Australia.
Been using it for several hours now total and so far have NOT been able to find any menu items for wi-fi tethering.
This post is coming using USB Tethering which worked right out of the box. Tethered to an Asus EEE 701 Netbook running Ubuntu Linux 10.04.
So, if I can't find wi-fi tethering menu item, I'll need to get root access and install barnacle again.
Compared to my Sony Ericsson X8, that I've had since late last year, it's blindingly fast! The big screen is nice too!
So yes, I'm all in favour of a dedicated forum ... I reckon that the Ideos X5 is going to be a big seller, at least here in Australia where I paid $349 for an unlocked, unbranded (vanilla rom) with version 2.2.1 rom.

Wait I thought x5 wasn't out yet....or is that just in America?

I agree, this phone definitely needs its own forum. I got an Ideos X5 or u8800 a few days ago and it is just awesome. This is my first 'real' smartphone as I just upgraded from an n73 haha. I'm really excited about getting a 2.3 rom (and SetCPU ) onto my phone and I would be glad to contribute in any way I can.
There is another thread requesting the same thing (U8800 = X5)
that is, forum plx :]

+1 for own forum section.
I've had this phone a few weeks, I like it so far. Some minor things that I'd like to try to change, but I've been waiting for CM recovery before that. I mailed the ROM Manager creator if I could help him on March 8th, but no reply yet.
Edit: Looks like there's a guide on how to port the CM recovery for new devices: google "porting-clockwork-recovery-to-new.html". I think I might try this some day if someone else doesn't port it before that

That U8800 thread has much more in the way of tips and useful info. While we wait for a forum dedicated to our Ideos X5 / U8800 phone, I suggest that we post any tips, info etc into THAT thread.
For example, I'll be copying my observation of the wifi tethering "gotcha" to that thread, now that I know it exists (thanks lyfkevin!).

Wow. I'm interested in this phone too ... since you already own one, does it run stock Android?
Really think we need a forum for this phone!
I'm not sure of your definition of "stock Android", Jubei71 but when I said "vanilla rom" I meant that it has a standard version of Android without phone carrier branding, shortcuts etc. For example, when it boots it just shows the Huawei logo.
It has "Swype" technology for the on-screen touch keyboard that I believe is a propriotory, non Google prodcut but I presume that Huawei simply pay for the rights to include it in this rom. And I found that I don't need to use Swype if I don't want too, "normal" hunt-and-peck key taps work just fine too.
I've installed plenty of stuff from the Google Market (Google and non Google) and it all works with no problems, although a You Tube link from one of my emails crashed the phone very soon after playback began. I had to power it down then re-start to regain control. I'm still checking but that email link may have been malicious or it may have been a "Adobe Flash 10" compatibility problem.
If my Ideos X5 proves to have unlocked Nand write and boot process (evidence so far suggests that it MAY be), I'll love it to death because then we'll be able to install our own "non-stock" , super-go-fast rom eventually!

As per title , I was looking for a Phone / Tablet after selling my ZTE Blade and Hannspad 10" Tablet.
Wondered if this can play games like Asphalt 6???
Also is putting a rom on very easy??
I am used to clockwork mod but not fastboot etc.
Also I read that with some roms you have to flash other files as well (Gingerbread)
Are Those Safe To Flash (UK Dell Streak Mini 5)
The price I was looking was £180 or should I just save for a HTC Sensation XL / Galaxy Note (at least twice as expensive)
I am currenty is still using the Streak but will upgrade to a Galaxy Note in a week or so. if you don't mind the Streak being last years toy than the Streak is a great device. Its pretty easy to flash new rom n upgrade to 2.3 andriod. U might have to do some reading in this form. The problem is that this form is not too kind to noods. The streak is pretty fast once its upgraded to andriod 2.3+. If money is not an issue than buy a galaxy note. I really dont understand why we need a super fast cpu on a phone. I want the Note because it has a bigger n a better screem. if u need some help in flashing to 2.3 I might be able to help.

I find the people in this forum to be very helpful, in fact many of them have taken the time to write up detailed instructions to improve every aspect of this phone. I think they just get a little testy when people don't take the time to read or even find their hard work. There are tutorials all over, and I'm sure you will quickly become a pro. Tools have been developed that make flashing very easy for the noob. Once you get the drivers set up on your PC, you can install a new pre-rooted rom in minutes. Then you can download and install many roms and themes without ever needing a computer.
I find that the Streak still satisfies all of my NEEDS as a phone/tablet, but not necessarily all of my WANTS. Of course you'll always want bigger and better...
Not sure about gaming on the streak, as I do very little, but keep in mind the ram and processor are about half of the newest models.

If you ignored price, you'd prob be better off buying a gnote or a galaxy nexus,
but you could buy 2-3 streaks for the price of either of those (unlocked vs unlocked).
The xl is also slower then the xe, it's a generation older spec wise (yea what the dell htc?). It's still faster then the s5, but slower then the xe.
The streak's now an aging device, dont expect to pay much but dont expect amazing performence compared to newer devices.
Well i just moved to the IPhone 4S i dont really use my Streak anymore, im about to sell it if your interested, is in amazing condition, i personally installed a custom rom gingerstreak 2.4.2.2 and is rooted, let me know if you interested, ill ship anywhere in the world
I also came from a ZTE Blade. It's a little more confusing installing roms.
Thanks guys
Well I purchased one for £135 ($213)
Bargain if you ask me.
I pick it up next week and will put Gingerbread on it (fingers crossed)
Hope I'm not dissapointed as I loved my 10" Hannspad.
As long as it plays Asphalt 6 I will be happy (I read it can play the new tintin game as well )
Thats a bargain. I paid £190 for mine and I already thought that was a bargain!
Good investment. ICS is OFFICIALLY coming to the 5, via DJ Steve. It's worth noting that 4.0 makes better use of the hardware, so with a solid 1.2ghz overclock the Streak + ICS should be a wonderful device even against the newest phones.
Heres the link incase anyone is interested..
He messaged me and said he accepts £135 no less
Its an IT firm not far from me , so fingers crossed they are just ex-demo

Bought mine 31st Oct. Paid £199,99 for it via eBay, Brand New!
Happy with it... but trying to install a custom ROM is kinda tricky! So gave up trying to flash a new ROM. Sticking with 2.2.2 for the time being!
Flashing customs ROM's on my previous handset (HTC HD2) was a piece of cake ... flashed a few different ROM's on that, with ease!"
As soon as you flash recovery and amss and dsp1 (baseband?) isnt it the same (flash zip via recovery?)
Once you are on the right files flashing zip is easy (I think anyway)

That's where I got stuck. Couldn't flash those 2 files to the handset. Managed to flash the ROM fine, as I did that via the SD card, via Recovery.
But trying to flash the AMSS and DSP1 was effort, so had to revert back to the stock 2.2.2 ROM!
First things to do
Reinstall Streak Drivers.
Try A laptop or different PC.
Download these into a folder and run flash.cmd (this is for DSC Rom but more roms use same baseband
or..........................
Use this video guide???

hi all , my w8 had so much problems lately my dad decided to trade it in (cause of faulty phone) and add some bucks for a better phone for me ..so i've been thinking what phone to get ..among the choices are ACE , xperia mini , and just recently i thought of defy cause someone said defy can get muiu and is quite cheap ...so should iget it?
what i am looking for - in order
-I WANT MIUIIII
-price
-speed
-durability
-root frinedliness
-community(roms , defs etc)
-camera...?
-design
my price range is about RM750xx in used is about US250 and i cant find for defy's price in malaysian website...so is this phone in my league?
oh and what is miui actually? and is there others phone i should consider?

I shouldnt buy it... These are my reasons:
Motorola updates (I think we will not see official ICS in DEFY+)
Locked Bootloader = No "perfect" or "easy" ICS CyanogenMod 9
Motorola lied about it ( Its a defy with "stock" clock processor values.. )
It only can use signed kernels (by motorola --> bootloader locked)
oh...but if i dont mind unlocking bootloader will it be good? i was traumatized by unlocking BL since i hard bricked b4...but this phone supports miui yes? and is it expensive? really intrested with this phone
Given phones that you listed Defy is a beast. Yeah, it has locked bootloader and a share of Motorola related issues but development community is awesome. You can get unofficial 2.3 from Moto (Defy+ port), CM7, MIUI and now work is done on Android 4.0. It's relatively cheap compared to other phones that are successful in terms of unnofficial support and it has pretty nice hardware.
---
-I WANT MIUIIII - done
-price - don't know about India but fairly cheap for that hardware
-speed - phone flies with CM7/MIUI/ICS, stock Moto software (2.2) not so much
-durability - very good, no scratch besides drop related (chest height onto pavement)
-root frinedliness - one-click root
-community(roms , defs etc) - awesome support
-camera...? - average
-design - basic matte finish, its beauty lies in simplicity
Yea man defy is best puck from this. Im writing to u from defy with android 4.0 so man... this phone is worth much more than hi is now

I usually to wash it by water .
LOL my dad asked about the retailer through the phone he said this phone no good better don't buy ...and he don't sell it , motorola is extremely unpopular in malaysia
You can get Defy @ around $200-225..and i would say go for defy.its one of those phones which is in league with likes of htc desire, samsung galaxy s..don't think of ace ..GPU of galaxy S & defy are almost identical plus lots of mod's on defy.use wajkui for miui or use fresh miui release @ MIUI.US..I think you can check defy on ebay or at your KL malls at chinese stores or in silangor ..you may get it for cheap..i was in malaysia for sometime..
definitely!!!
tbh it would not be the best option atm
for a year ago it would be good as its c/p is high
but now i suggest u to get another one
Great phone and awesome devs, but I'd say no until the bootloader is unlocked

Well. I would say may be not now. There are other good phones recently launched could be better buy e.g sony erricsson neo-V etc.
The dev work is picking up for neo-V and is having similar specs to defy with better CPU, HDMI and unlocked boot loader.
Hi guys
I'm about to buy a flashed X5 for about 150€.
I have to say that im a complete noob (like the registration video told me ) in all these things and the x5 would be my first Android Phone ever, but nvertheless Im really excited about all this modding and flashing and whatever you people do with the phones. I just want to make sure the bought phone wont die within one week because of some mistakes the seller made while having fun eventually flashing it wrong.
Its said to be flashed with the MUI 2.3.7 and overclocked to 1,2GHz (is that secure for the processor?)
Also the description says it has "7 Launcher" installed - this actually doesnt tell me a single thing, could someone kindly explain what it is and what it does?
Thats all the information I got about the current state of the phone. Would you say that its a well-done combination, or is there some potential of the whole thing being nothing but a mess?
Many thanks to you!

That's a second hand phone? In Portugal, a new one costs 149€ :S
Well the seller says the phone has not been used at all, he just flashed it and put everything back
Anyways - could anyone help me out - should I buy the phone or does it all sounds too messed up already, what do you think
I would just check the price and spec of new phones in the same price bracket. This is an older phone now and I would not be surprised if you could pick it up for a similar price new with some looking.
That said, as long as it is all working, it should be ok. Price is similar to what I just paid for mine on a new years special. Launcher 7 will be gone when he wipes the phone data to sell it to you so you can choose to install it later if you want the windows phone 7 look.
I would just ask if it is still 2.6.32 kernel based (froyo rom) or if it has been upgraded to a 2.6.35 kernel base (official gingerbread). Either is fine, but it will just help you when it comes to installing roms later.
150€ is a normal price for a second handed phone here in Slovenia aswell. I might suggest, if you can get Samsung Galaxy S for that price, do it. I had Ideos X5 for 7 months, tried all ROMs I could find, but when I got my hands on Galaxy S, well...I switched to Galaxy S. The only major thing between them is that Ideos X5 has LED emitter. The battery seems to last longer on Galaxy S with stock ROM or custom in comparison with Ideos X5 stock and custom ROMs. Galaxy S has AMOLED display, which has a bit less DPI (it is 2mm longer, wider), but way better contrast with pictures/videos. In general it is smoother.
To answer your question, if the phone appears not to be damaged to you physically, you have nothing to worry about.
