Which ROM to install? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I haven't touched my nook in months. I believe the last ROM i put on it was cm7.1
I'm going to give this nook to my old man and don't want to worry about issues such as wifi connection interpret, ect...
I just want the most stable ROM.
Considering i have been out of the loop so long i don't know which way to go.
Seen many new roms, cm 7.2, mirage, ect...
To all of you that get many calls helping their parents out with computers or phones... You know that as least as possible reasons for them to call you the better

I run Mirage and i found that it is the most stable in my opinion

Another vote for Mirage. It's on both my and my wife's system and is quite stable.

The link in my sig makes installing Mirage-Kang to eMMC a no brainer. Oh yeah, +1 for Mirage.

I have tried every rom I could get. Mirage wins hands down.

Pretty conclusive I'd say. Thanks for the suggestions.

Thinking about getting a nook, whats stable?

im a android fan boy, currently rocking the nexus s 4g.
i can get a nook for a good deal so im really interested.
i love honeycomb but from what i can tell its buggy?
the dev forum is kinda a mess and i dont know whats new or whats old?
so whats the most stable and fast to use for surfing, downloading apps, typical android stuff.
what honey comb rom is stable?
im just pretty lost, the forum is bulked up with stuff everywhere.
CM7 is the best rom for the Nook period. Go with the latest Nightly as stables are less stable than the nightlys these days and so far behind feature wise it isn't even funny.
About honeycomb: its never going to happen. Ever. Google will not put out the source code and what we have now has been reverse engineered from the SDK and it is basically unusable.

thanks,
i heard overclocked that the nook really flies, and it blows other pads like the touchpad out the water (that is of course until the TP ever gets android ported)
Blindly grabbing the latest nightly may not be the best advice--I always poke my head in this thread and check the last page or so to make sure there's not a rash of trouble reports before I download a new nightly. The vast majority are quite stable, but every once in a while there's a dud. I also generally don't grab a nightly that's less than a day old.
I agree that CM7 is the best rom so far, but I will also suggest to try every rom out there. Flashing a ROM on the NC is extremely simple, unlike say, a Samsung Captivate (I have one).

Since most are based on CM7 and many people start having issues when updating to different ROMS and then trying to go back I would stick with CM7.
What's Stable
I'd have to say that CM7 is the most stable ROM that is available for the Nook Color. I know that the Honeycomb build is coming along, but until Google actually opens up the Honeycomb source it's not going to make the strides you want.
CM7 based off of Gingerbread is an excellent build. ClockWorkMOD (CWM) is now on 3.2.0.1 and supports Nooks with v1.3 firmware.
ManualNooter 4.6.16 - Gain Root
ClockWorkMOD (CWM) - 3.2.01
CM7 nightly release - running Ginergergread #200.
Nook Tweaks - Overclock your Nook and gain some audio fixes. (built in overclock kernal).
The only hiccup I have encountered is the Market issue with CM7. There are various fixes out there, the easiest being to reset your LCD Density. Besides that the ROM is table and works great.
I'd wait for the Honeycomb port to fully "develop" before I start using it.

Sorry to break it too you but honeycomb won't ever "develop" its basically as far as the devs can go without source code.

Yea i dont think anything will come about honeycomb without a source.
look at motorolas without kernel sources.
im running the nexus s 4g now and love it.
coming from a evo, epic 4g, optimus and now the nexus.
truth be told i love android.
im going to try to get a nook for around 125.
unless i score a touchpad for 99.
so its very stable and quick?
i wouldnt notice a difference with lets say a store bought tab (within reason of course)?
Got mine in the summer and started with 7.1.0 ever. Ran that for a month and then got nightly 172 and ben using that since. Running on sd card - SanDisk 16GB, cl 4. I have the occasional fc and reboot about once or twice a month.

CM7 & MIUI, whats the hype?

Am I totally missing something with these 2 roms? They seemed to be all the rage and everyone's is so happy we have them, but I don't see what's so great. Both threads for these list numerous bugs and issues. The CM7 has a nightly update for god's sake! If it needs nightly updates it sounds like it doesn't work all that great. And MIUI looks like an iphone.
I'm not trying to start a riot in here either lol. I just don't see what the hype is for.
I would suggest trying them for yourself before knocking them To answer your question in a short manner. The answer is options. You have numerous options and tweaks on both roms that you won't find anywhere else. CM blazes through everything for the most part. MIUI, I hear that iphone excuse all the time. With all the mtz files there are you can make it look like anything you want to. Mix n match like no other rom. Look at the threads started by me and you will see one called "One Stop Shop" with some good info on MIUI.

Whoops. You got a free thanks
Anyways, if u want a shorter answer instead of reading thru these 2 paragraphs, either read Jay's response above, and/or drop to the last paragraph in my response.
Now, let's begin with CM7. We are an officially supported CM7 device, but we still do not have a close to 100% RC yet. There are still some very small quirks that need work, hence, nightlies. All nightlies are, are EXPERIMENTAL builds that contain the most recent advancements. They may or may not be as stable as an RC, which means they can both include fixes, and bugs. The reason for the hype if because its an AOSP ROM. Some ppl aren't very fond of Samsung's TW UI and would rather run on AOSP. The other side to that is updates. We were "lucky" to receive official GB, but we probably won't be "lucky" with ICS, which its safe to say, we will eventually be receiving thanks to CM and our CM Team.
As for MIUI, its based off of CM. This ROM is better known for a greater "customizable" experience. With MIUI you get a similar AOSP experience except with more themes. With MIUI you are able to choose a specific theme for SMS, another theme for the dialer, and another for contacts, etc. So you can basically mix n match themes here n there. The things with MIUI is that it kinda "piggybacks" on CM's proggress, so updates will come a bit after our CM ROMs/Kernels are updated.
****Bottom line: CM7 & MIUI offer a minimilistic AOSP experience, including support, which may or may not include updates that could extend your phones lifespan****

I wasn't knocking them, just didn't see the overwhelming hype. Thanks for the info though. I do love an AOSP rom and use them often. at the moment I am running the clean GB which is sort of aosp. I didn't know about the MIUI themes, that might be interesting if i can get away from the iphone feel.
I am looking forward to the CM9 ICS rom.. now THAT i will be excited about lol.
thanks for the info everyone.

The nightly updates are a feature, not a bug, CyanogenMod is supported by at least 20 different devices, with heavy development on just the base code too, when something for our device, or something in the base code is updated, it is immediately released every night so that everyone is completely current with the latest features and bugfixes
My personal favorite enhancements that were brought with CM7 are Themes that change immediately (No restarts needed, or a visit to clockwork), hundreds of themes available at a moments download from the market (or xda and other places), DSP sound enhancement, moving the status bar to the bottom of the screen (really handy, right by the buttons), performance-wise it is top notch (besides a few bugs that don't really effect me), gestures on the lockscreen (write a G and BAM gmail), Swipe to remove notifications, and I could go on...
Point is, Touchwiz can lick my ***, it offers nothing to me that isn't done better in CM7...
Never used MIUI before, so I dunno about that one...

I wouldn't use MIUI for the Epic4g (Even though MIUI itself is great) due to bugs.
However, CM7 and eventually CM9 are something I'd highly recommend on any device supported.
Do some research, use Google. Cyanogen Mod has a website itself full of information.
Both represent things that Samsung and Sprint consider not possible with this device.
CM giving you the pure Google experience minus all the Touch Wiz/carrier/Sammy bloat.
MIUI which was/is a very popular ROM across quite a few platforms showing yet another stripped down, minimal experience.
As far as nightlies go... That is progress in the works. Things get implemented, tested by users and then tweaked/fixed/eliminated as the product progresses forward.
I think the best thing ever is CM9 coming to the Epic 4g. This shows that Sammy and Sprint are full of it when it comes to ICS-Android 4.0 on this device. CM team deserves a huge pat on the back for making this happen.

Thanks for that write up. I got CM, but didnt get MIUI. I was thinking it was a CM clone that lagged behind CM in updates, and was made to look like an iPhone.
Your explanation clears up my confusion rather nicely!
I have ran the last 15 cm7 nightlies and they are pretty solid other than a few volume issues I haven't had problems. I am currently trying out miui and it's nice. Packed full of options and everything is working well for me. Miui can be made to look any way u want. I have a gs2 lock screen, some ics theming, s2 boot animation. GPS got a 2 meter lock first try...no complaints
The reason for all of the bug reports is because they're in development threads - we'd be preaching to the choir if we always reported on the benefits (the developers know those things, that's why they took up the porting project). It doesn't mean that the rom sucks, not by any means
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Definitely doesn't suck. To the op...make a backup and try out some stuff. Clean gb is not aosp some tw still there. I oddly like tw bit having variety has brought life back into the epic. I was sure it would be a dead phone until recently when I found out cm and miui became available. Whether people like it or not...once these developers came aboard it helps the entire development process.
Best argument for CM7, as someone already mentioned, is the nightly updates. Remember how long it took to get Froyo? It was due to Sprint/Samsung adding their bloat. Cyanogenmod eliminates those 2 middle men. Thank you devs.

I was exactlyyyyyyy like youuu
Until I flashed cm7 and seen how amazing it really is
I still do think about other tw roms tho cuz every rom is unique and amazing in its own way
But cm7 it really great you could literally do anything u want there's settings for everythingg and themes in the market is amazing
And I never tried miui but as soon as it gets 4g ill b one of the first ppl to flash it lol
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I wont whore up this thread but my gripe w cm7 currently is the camera and the volume bug. Its tolerable but damn the camera takes a while to open compared to tw and the volume bug, since I use speaker phone a lot is rather annoying. Still fantastic work. Almost there and its so close. It weird how the volume bug only attacks calls. Media volume control is perfect. But whatever, they will get it. Had this phone since launch day and been Modding it since then lol. This is the best time for the epic now that so many options are available
As a couple others have stated, my only gripe with CM7 is the volume issue on phone calls. If that ever gets squashed, it's damn near perfect for me. My phone runs so much smoother and faster on CM, and the amount of options available to customize your phone (profiles, themes, quiet hours, interface tweaks, etc) makes it even more worth it. I was a CleanGB user for a long time until recently as it is my favorite TW based ROM out there until it ceased being so "clean" with all the continued added stuff so I made the jump to at least try CM (especially since Toad made an MTD version of CleanGB to ease flashing back and forth) and haven't looked back.

There's so many nightlies because of new features being added, new improvements if you want something stable but miss all the goodies then stick with a stock rom. Simple as that man. MIUI I do agree is iPhonish but does have android implemented but I don't care for it good to those who have it but that's my opinion. And CM7 is a great AOSP rom no will ever be able to beat it
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Cm7 is great with all the added features and the fact that installing a new theme is one market search away, but its not the end all be all of all roms imo! I do like it but I like all of the ei22 tw roms also... my favorite is the viper rom (for now) and imo it is better than cm7... great battery life and super snappy... I haven't tried cm7 since the rc0 w/ wimax hit so I am probably missing out though.. I know a lot has been fixed since then but I just can't bring myself to flash it yet... cm9 will be the end all be all for me! Looks amazing in the videos, can't wait!!!

Now TDJ is gone, what's the best Rom in terms of stability?

HI everyone,
I'll start by acknowledging all of the answers to questions OTHER than what is in this title.
- Yes ROM's are personal choice.
- Oh, thanks now I know that it is a matter of preference on how I use my phone and how I want my rom to look.
- Sheez, there are other amazing developers on here besides TDJ?
Ok, so for a while Mr Derek dominated this forum with his superb skills (is that dude really in his early 20's!)
and so now I have no idea who are the up and coming superstars.
I have a busy life so trolling every post to see what people think of the new guys isn't an option for me (especially as I am not an employee where I can surf while at work and get paid for it - you know who you guys are lol
I was a die hard MIUI user and found great battery with the TDJ kernels.
I tried Darkside CM7 and Sense 4.0 and they sucked out more juice.
So I'm looking for a stable "daily" and I found MIUI 2.35 by TDJ to start FC a lot.
I am now on MIUI 2.3.9 and it is pretty good - so great job to Cnote and Jhutson
for that.
I am still finding quite a lot of FC's even though I have fixed permissions and only ever flash after full wipes etc.
I'd love to hear what you guys think. Developers - Time to promote yourself and tell me why you rock...
Users- time to share your thoughts and cheer for your faves.
Look forward to hearing from you all soon!!
Check out team Inferno's roms, those are pretty stable. If stability is your major concern, i would steer away from the ics roms for now because, in my experience, the launcher is very destable or they lack some features. I personally use darksense, just because tdj has left the forums doesn't mean that you can't use his roms.
Personally, I enjoy using CoreDroid v1.3. I installed DianXinOS on my wife's phone for the eye candy (it also has great battery life with it's battery manager), but it's still in development being ported over & translated from Chinese. I was getting frustrated using DianXinOS as a daily driver, so I had to change, but I think it's a viable option once it's up & running to its full capabilities. It's a project from Team Inferno I believe, so I expect great things from that ROM.
Team Inferno's ROMs are very stable. Although, CoreDroid is good as well. If you're an AOSP fan, I'd stick with either faux123's CM7 or MIUI. Team Inferno is working on Sense + ICS, but you say Sense 4.0 (think you meant 3.6) didn't work for you. I'd go with either Android Revolution HD or HoneySmartDroid for Sense ROMs. Hope this helps you.
Most stable is vu 2.39 for me. Can't be beat, and has excellent battery life.

Are you getting this direct from miui.us?
I know that TDJ was doing some considerable tweaks to make it better and I think he had mentioned there were some new amazing devs coming up to take over.
Now I see quite a few different MIUI roms and not sure what is the optimal etc.
Thank you to everyone who gave clear, honest and respectful comments - I hit your thanks buttons!

While I agree with corvus, not all of us have a ton of time to flash a ****load of ROMs. I love to play with my Xoom, but I also have a life (work, school, cat, girlfriend. and the last two get jealous if i play with my xoom more than them). But anyway. If you wanna choose a good ROM, read their respective forums. I can tell you the two oldest (read:most time invested) dev's here for the Xoom are Tiamat (TeamEOS) and Team Rogue. From what I've learned in my time at this forum (Ive had my Xoom since they came out), they seem to have the most experience with Xoom-specific problems. I'm presonally on Steady's CM9 Kang. It's important to note that he's now the official maintainer for the Xoom branch of CM9. TeamEOS has done great work, and it should be fun to play around with their Cornerstone builds. I haven't messed with them, so I can't speak to its efficacy.
I've also noticed that since the release of the Galaxy Nexus, the ROM scene here has seen a large growth as of late. I can't speak to the quality of these "bleed-thru" ROMs, but I'm sure they're fine. Seems kinda reverse-engineered to work on our Xooms though. I'm no expert!
TLDR: Try CM9! It should have a bunch of mods and go-fast pretties. If you don't like it, try out TeamEOS offerings. Donate to whichever you find suits your needs best.
Another 'best of'...
It all depends on what you want. If its glitz with additional functionality - team eos or cm9 kang.
I personally use Razorblades AOSP build. Its straightforward - no glitches - overclockable if you desire, and found it had no visual glitches or funky sleep issues. No glitz - but I want a ROM that provides a stockish experience with additional features that all come together well.
Bugless Beast is fantastic too. I just prefer a more stockish tablet experience.
I used CM9 the day it came out but recently switched to CNA. I vote CNA for sure, very reliable and customizable.

I'm happy as can be with EOS wingray nightlies...I'm on build #84 and it's super stable and functional. I oc to 1.6 ghz without a glitch. I've played with Cornerstone, but actually prefer plain EOS ICS and use Overskreen and Stickit for that same multitasking experience...just less buggy and demanding.
As an developer I prefer Team Rouges (unofficial) CM9 Release.
You have ADB in the developer settings and many more handy options.
Be careful on the WIFi-only (Wingray) Release. Since 15/03 The ROM crashes when you don't have a sd-card in. This is a serious problem. But the ROM is great!!!
Edit
It crashes every time when the tablet goes into standby mode AND no SD-card is in.
Eos is the bestest packing the most winz. I'm not biased or anything. Really.
I have EOS, CM9 and AOKP. I found the best is AOKP, currently running AOKP Milestone 4. If you are interested go to http://www.forum.aokp.co
Good luck.

If u truly want the best rom out there for thr xoom go with either the 1.0.0 from EOS or the EOS nightlies hands down
I know my name doesn't carry much clout in here, but having gone through EOS 1.0.0 / Unofficial CM9 / Codename Android 1.5.5 in the past month I really like the newest Codename Android.
Mostly waiting for there to be an official CM9 release. Then I'll jump ship to that.
Of course I run all my roms with Team Tiamats AOSP 3.0.5 kernel (w/ GPU OC)
My Xoom runs beautifully.
I have wifi only xoom and have used team eos with overclocked gpu. Its very stable no only had 2 crash's since i'v had it and that was the browser so would not put it down to the firmware at all all the hardware is supported fine and works well. I think eos is clean and tidy and with dev tools zips you'll have alot to play with.
i've testet all roms out there...
the best release would be eos with trebuchet from cm9,
or rouges cm9 with tiamat kernel...
I also just can from EOS 1.0 to Codename Android 1.5.5 and like it a lot. Both are great roms, but I just like the customization of Codename a little better.

Love the bugless beast rom. I've tried most of the others and came back to bugless because it is so reliable. And the USB extension is working without an app. Concerning the bugless nightly downloads, all you have to do is stroll down until you see wingray downloads and click-on.

I have this phone back in my hands yet again, got my mum a new phone since she hates Android. I may or may not decide to continue this series, I probably will since I'm going to start doing so on the Moto G. If there is anyone left with this phone at all that would like to see a ROM review or a ROM in action, leave a reply on the thread and I'll see what I can do. Happy watching!
-Nov. 7 2015 update-
What I'm going to do instead of like my previous recordings, I'm going to flash a ROM and use it for one week with casual use, then try and upload it the following Sunday/Monday. It might not be on a weekly basis, but I will post whenever I have a new video up. I also don't know how much I will use it on a daily basis since it's not my primary phone, but I will try to do light web browsing, occasional light gaming, and social media while also tweaking some settings and customizing it depending on the features of the rom.

That's actually what I planned on doing for this week, I'm not sure which rom since there are several good ones to choose from, I'm still figuring that out
Nice to watch :good:
Great that you're doing this I'll be adding to the vision thread

For suggestions on ROM videos, try to do as many different categories, you have sense, cyanogen, next miui, then maybe an aosp (guhl99s permission spoofing would be great)
Keep it up!

Great idea. Once I get a few more uploaded then I'll break up the original post into those subcategories. Hell, I take that back. I'll do it now since I have some spare time
This week's is gonna be a day late, my apologies
*Edit*
So my camera decided that it hates life, so I sadly have to skip this week's. I'll hopefully get it's problem worked out or switch over to my old external webcam
Finally found my camera charger, new upload for this week, it's a day early because I'll be busy all day tomorrow. G2 Slim v1.6 is this week's, CyanKat or Andromadus CM11 is going to be next week's.

I loved Slim's roms. I've tested some on the SGS and we had only one once on the Vision but it was good!
Would love to have SlimKat on Vision... Omni ROM look promising too but the promises of the new cyankat are impressive!
Because I am testing out demkantor's build of TWRP recovery, I will not have a video up just yet because of a bug I stumbled upon. I will however turn this from a Friday-only, I guess mini-series is the best way to explain it, into probably twice a week or so. I'll have either CyanKat or Flinny's CM11 up around Monday/Tuesday.
*Edit*
Since the person behind CyanKat is working on an update, I'm gonna postpone my video for that and focus on some other Sense and MIUI roms until it's updated. Once it is, I'll get a video on it up for you guys.
Aw come on, there's plenty of ROMs that work with my 90% working twrp, there's always my 90% working cyanmobile ROM
Keep up the good work, twice a week sounds better than one time!

New vid up, slightly longer than usual cuz I went on a rant about a few things. xD It's CoolOS's GB MIUIv3, I decided to do a MIUI build since I kept saying I'd do one but never got around to it. enjoy.
One thing I'm now going to do for you guys and gals out there is write a full review on each rom that I have done a video on, so you can get a more in-depth opinion and overview of the rom.. The first one is up in the first post, it's CoolOS's Sensei rom. Happy reading!
hope to see some new videos soon!
PS, added your great work above the ROM list FOUND HERE
Written review for G2Slim is live. New video(s) planned for the upcoming days.
New video coming up today/tomorrow after I get some rest since I just got off night shift. So, yeah. xD
I might revive this since I've been contemplating doing it with the Moto G as well, I edited the first post. Why not do both in case there are people out there still with the phone?
What's best rom with most features (including cam/camcorder) for t-mobile htc g2 vision running Android 2.3.4?

I'm not too sure what's out there that's specifically 2.3.4, but there are several 2.3.3 ROMs. Are you mainly after camera features, customization, speed, or all of the above?
