Battery performance on official ICS - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

Anyone else noticed a significant shorter battery life since updating to ICS?
For me it drains almost twice as fast as it did on honeycomb :crying:
Everything else works great for me, no compatibility issues with any of my apps, sooo much smoother than honeycomb, many great new features. Also I haven't had any problems with wifi like some users reported yet.

Mine settled after wiping dalvik-cache. Being afraid to wipe in ICS I just used terminal to go to... dalvik-cache, deleted all the files and re-booted.

Mine is better actually
As mentioned above try wiping the cache. Also maybe you flashed a European version on a HK Tab? I guess radios are different and possibly your previous radio was better suited to the network where you live? That actually makes a huge difference

I live in austria, got my tab via three austria, and flashed official rom for austria. So I guess that should work fine.
I will try wiping the dalvik cache, see if that makes any difference. Thanks for the suggestion.

Also make sure to leave your wifi on even when sleeping, that makes a big difference, even if it doesn't seem logical.

My battery is also better on ICS
I have the Australian 6810 32GB version and it has now had the UK ICS ROM image flashed for a couple of weeks.
The battery is a lot better than it was on HC, as is the overall performance. I did a clean install using desktop ODIN with a full wipe.

Well, wiping the cache didn't help. I figured out what's the issue anyways: I use my tab on lowest possible brightness setting most of the time but the lowest setting in ICS is brighter than the lowest setting in HC was. That causes me to have more overall drain when using the tab, while standby time stays the same.
Does anyone know an app or something that allows me to set the brightness as low as I could on honeycomb?

Screen adjuster maybe can help you

Nice, this can also adjust the greenish tint AMOLED displays have, but then device begins to lag a little
But for brightness this is great! Thank you!

Brightness issue with Custom ROMS

Hi There,
I just recently rooted my HTC Desire Z (on Orange) without any issues. Installed a few different ROMS including CM7, CM9beta, Sense4 Beta, etc ...
All of these ROMS have the same issue when it comes to the LCD backlight brightness on the phone. The brightness never goes above ~25% no matter what I do.
I can lower it to minimum which works fine, but as I slide up the brightness once it hits around 25% it never gets any brighter, 100% is the same brightness as 25%.
I've tried everything to solve this, all the obvious things like Auto-brightness off, reflashing, different ROMS, searched through the forums and haven't found this problem.
I DID find people who have this problem on the SonyE Xperia Ray and they posted a fix for it, however the fix doesn't apply to the Desire Z - it says to edit the system/etc/hw_config.sh file and I don't even have this file on the Desire Z!
Can anyone help who has experienced this? The phone is almost unusable normal sunny daytime conditions without the extra brightness
I was going to try to return to stock next to see if that solves it, but then - can I not use any custom ROM?
Help!
Thanks
Docaroo
Also...my screen is using like 90 percent of my battery even in standby!
Something seriously wrong there!

Are you wiping data, when you flash the ROM?
Yeah full wipe from recovery each time!
Sent from my HTC Desire Z using xda premium
Odd. I haven't had this same problem on CM7, ILWT CM7 (as well as Sense ROMs). I haven't tried any ICS ROMs or Sense 4, so I can't speak to those.
I've been reading some things on here that suggest CM7 didn't have correct values for auto-brightness settings on the Z/G2 but that shouldn't affect overall brightness.
The strange thing is the screen battery rape that's happening as well! The battery drain looks like the screen is on 100% brightness all the time, even when it's asleep and off! Still seems to kill battery!
I guess I'll try a complete do-over of everything... go back to stock and make sure it works then flash this sense4 ROM again.
Pain in the butt!
Try fastboot wipe before your flash and why not superwipe too. I doubt its hardware related so it was either a bad download (check md5 sum) or residue from previous rom curropted something

I'm running Virtuous Primadonna and just tested my screen brightness slider. Works as advertised. I use SuperwipeG2+ext4 between each and every wipe. Never have had an issue that wasn't already in existence.
Do you use CWM or 4EXT recovery? It's believed that the recovery wipe isn't as through as Superwipe.
I just tried again with 4EXT recovery loading this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546915 (Ice Cream Sensewich).
Still the same issue! Brightness never goes about 25-30% no matter where the slider is!!
I did a full wipe with 4EXT recovery, including formatting the /system folder ...
I'll try Superwipe though, after that I'm out of ideas! :/
Superwipe followed by Sensewich Beta6 doesn't work
Will try Primadonna....

Ah Jesus CHRIST!!! Exact same problem with Primadonna!! What the heck!!
I've superwiped and installed ... no difference.
I wonder if it could be hardware? But what would stop the LCD Backlight brightness from going up to full??
My god this is so annoying! :/
Hate to say it but it sounds like a hardware issue :/

That's what I'm thinking at this stage... I could take the phone apart and look for anything obvious I guess! Maybe a bad connection to the screen or something ...
Try wiping and flashing something stable like the latest cyanogen

I have to agree with blk_jack on this one. I've run several different ROMs on my G2 and have never had that issue. My battery has always drained very quickly but I've always had full control of the brightness settings.

Why HK users have so many issues after upgrading to ICS?

Hello, I have been waiting for Samsung HK to release the ICS before purchase. Within a day after the release, lots of users in HK have complained several issues. I tried a Galaxy Note with ICS in a local store, the response of that device was like 50% slower than that before the upgrade. How come even the hardware is the same, some users have more problems than the others (with respect to locally and globally)?
Probably because those ppl upgrading didn't wipe after the ICS upgrade.
When I tried out the LPY rom without wiping, it did really feel like everything was noticeably slower.
Wiping sorted out the performance issue for me. Of course, Samsung should really ensure that users don't really have to wipe to get peak performance post upgrade to ICS..

Just keep going on and tell ppl to wipe with the buggy ics kernels..........
Samsung might send you medal of honour for that..
I read that they have the following problems. At this stage, do you recommend buying the Note only if it has ICS pre-installed or wait until Samsung HK has fixed the bugs? (Not sure if the Note with ICS pre-installed has these problems.) Why Samsung does not release the same ICS to different countries?
- "Google Map always force close during the time of GPS location "
- Cannot receive signals from routers of 5GHz
- Front camera changed from 2M pixels to 1.3 M pixels
- Very slow response over all. (My experience is about 50% drop in speed overall.)
- Poor battery performance
- High RAM usage
- Becomes very hot easily
- GPS disappeared (not sure as I don't read Chinese well).
- Some kind of mess up with music files (not sure as I don't read Chinese well).

Like dude above said, wiping throught cwm or even stock wipe/factory reset on any ics, except cm9 is not safe. It can brick your phone.

A brick is a building stone for your house, slang for unusable. In case of ics it can render broken mmc chip, thus making it nearly impossible to fix for ordinairy consumers.
You have softbricks and hard bricks. In case of ics chance of hard brick is higher

Just from my personal experience, I haven't noticed any of that even though I installed ICS without wiping/factory reset. My Note is no slower since upgrading from GB, it gets no hotter, GPS still works with Google Maps, the battery lasts the same as it did on GB, the RAM usage is no higher, the front camera looks exactly the same in Skype, and my music works just the same as it did before.

Excuse me! I am new to Android. What is mean by "wiping"?
I suppose "rooting" is similar to "jail breaking" in iPhone term. Am I right?
Do people who have "rooted" their phone have more issues after upgrading to ICS? Thanks.
My first time upgrade from 2.3.6 to 4.0.3 = lagging like hell and battery hog!
Then I had it reset to factory settings from menu. = no more lagm or lesser lag i should say. But battery hog still.
Then i did a hard reset (pressing volume button + power button + center button when my mobile off) = battery works a bit better now but still a bit hog.

Yes, you will lose root and CWM. You can root and get back CWM after updating if you choose to. dr. ketan's mega thread explains how. I rooted after updating but chose not to install CWM.
For those of you who still haven't received the update, you might not get it OTA (from my personal experience). My phone found no update OTA, but instantly informed me of the update when I checked with Kies, so make sure to check both methods.
I didn't wipe after upgrading to ICS, not sure I want to yet. My personal observations are: battery life is a lot better (phone switches to sleep a lot faster now), reception/signal is much better, and the stylus accuracy is better. I've noticed no bugs with Maps or Music (though I haven't tried using GPS with Maps yet).
The bad things I've come across: 1) I've noticed so far is some very noticeable lag/sluggish touchscreen response, especially when clicking apps/buttons on the screen and any scrolling gestures. It's especially noticeable after waking the phone. 2) RAM load is also noticeably higher than before under normal usage (~100-200 MB more). 3) The phone takes a lot longer to perform "media scanning" after turning on. 4) A minor thing I've noticed is the phone takes a couple of seconds longer to shut down lol. Other than these 4 issues, my phone has been fine.
EDIT: I've found minor bug with the Music player - custom playlists randomly get deleted by the phone...major pain to redo them all. And I can't find where the phone saves them so I could at least try to back them up.

G2 Freezes when hot

I have a G2 with Cyanogen mod on it and for some reason when I bring it out and turn it off and try to turn it back on the screen won't come back on and it only does this when the back plate is hot, I tried underclocking it but the underclock wont stick and doesn't seem to help anyway. Makes it really unreliable when it does this can anyone tell me why? I was thinking about updating to the newest cyanogen since i'm running it off whatever my friend put on it when I bought it from him.
You probably have an app running in the background that uses a lot of resources. I would factory reset and flash the latest CM nightly/gapps

Never happened to me, but sometimes when my dz is hot ( due to navi, wifi-tethering, ecc ) it simply turns off.. since i have a stock-rom.
But, in your case, i suggest to re-install the rom after a full-dalvik wipe.

Hi, I have the latest stock rom with the small update released a few months ago, and have the same problem, when the phone is too hot, it freezes. Only solution is to remove battery to restart.
Mine usually reboots, but could be a rogue app or bad battery.

Snote changes screen brightness

When using the tablet in a dark room with auto brightness, launching Snote causes the screen to become much brighter when it's launched. Anybody else have this problem?
This is so irritating. It has hurt my eyes so many times. I wish that someone here fixes this ASAP. It just shoots the brightness to the maximum.

My S Note got this bug after updating the firmware. Also, S Note now has a scroll bar that I hated because it is touch sensitive and my hands always touches it accidentally. Gone also is the option to hide the sNote toolbar. My note was perfect before the update and now has this irritating bugs in s note.

I've noticed this on mine as well. Except I think that s note records what the screen brightness was when you last closed it, and will override your current brightness level with this stored one whenever you open it up.

Based on the way I take notes I actually like it. Some other folks here have made similar comments. The easy solution would be to provide a toggle in S-Note's settings so the feature could be turned off by those that don't like it. Samsung sold 2MM Note 10.1’s in two months. The odds of all 2MM purchasers using their devices the same way and wanting the same thing features wise is pretty slim.
I didn't have this problem until a couple of days ago. I fixed it by using the display brightness app. It basically manually overrides the android brightness so the brightness settings persist even when opening a note.

This works great, thanks!!
I wonder if Velis Auto Brightness can fix that.
OK, so I was getting really annoyed with this, but realised it happens in apps other than s-note (for me at least). especially when I'm using apps in portrait mode...
I even switched off auto brightness & used "lux auto brightness" thinking this might address the problem -- it doesn;t.
However for me the brightness dimming is caused by my hand/pen/anything getting close to the proximity sensor on the device (the hole top centre to the left). Go near there and within a second the screen dims. Move away it's normal.
On my S3 I seem to remember the proximity sensor could be disabled on ICS - but no option on Jellybean
Of course having the samsung logo the same side of the screen in portrait mode as your "handiness" helps too -- that way your hand is less likely to go near the proximity sensor.... this is my current "fix"
Ideas on sw configuration?

Thoughts about JB on PT-3113

So what are your thoughts about JB. So far i havent played with it alot and it seems a bit snappier but not alot though

I'm not sure, but I think the wi-fi reception has improved.
screen rotation
I disable the screen rotation but the lock screen still rotates
Does anyone meet the same problem?
I personally don't see much difference in performance. With the status bar moving to the top and performance about the same,I'd have to score it a -1 or a 0 at best.
i never saw any performance issue with ICS so i don't see any improvement in JB. I do love the google now / voice search stuff though.
I think some of you need to check you're TAB's.. I, like some here, have been running stock ICS (P-3113) & updated the other day (after the long wait for the official Jelly Bean update) & I noticed quiet a bump in performance. One thing that might have helped me was the fact that I did a Wipe/Factory Data Reset before I updated. I also didn't do a restore from backup, I actually reinstalled everything fresh & everything is running great so far! One thing that helps it feel faster is the fact that everything is so much smoother & jitter free now, I also notice apps open a lot quicker now.. no more little pause after touching an icon.
.:Things I like:.
Performance: The tab seems much "snappier" now.
Project Butter: The "stutter" is gone.. everything IS Buttery Smooth now!
Battery: Run time seems to have improved a little bit.. I was getting two days of light use on ICS, with JB I'm now on the third day at 44%.
Phablet UI actually isn't to bad, I thought I was going to have to use the tab in portrait mode all the time.. nope, put in landscape, disable screen rotation, done.
.:Things I don't like:.
I could do without the "shortcuts"? row on the right side in landscape mode.. Phablet UI.
I wish they would have left the soft buttons at the bottom where they were.. although, I am starting to get used to their new location now.
Notification bar at the top, really.. OKAY!?
Q: Is the root method the same as it was for ICS or has something changed.. if so, point me to the post w/the new method please. Thanks.
The TAB 2 now feels like a useful device I look forward to using every day. AWESOME.
Later, Phil B.
I'll agree with the post above. I first upgraded via kies and really didn't notice any performance improvement. But after a full wipe and reinstallation with Odin I see a marked improvement in performance. The whole UI is much "snappier" and the performance of demanding apps like NFS Most Wanted is also noticeably improved!
For those like me who hate the "phablet" look I posted a method here that will pretty much get you back to what you are used to.:good:
Oh and CF-Auto-Root still works for me!

yes, I have the same problem on my galaxy tab 2 7.0 but this is not really a problem. I have larger problems after the update to JB today:
1- I can't connect my galaxy tab 2 7.0 to PC, and I've installed the Kies but no help.
2- I hadn't have much free internal memory on Ice Cream Sandwich, but it used to work properly without any app to stop responding. But JB uses much more internal memory and this made the device very slow and it stopped working frequently (apps and even touch-wiz stops working) and I had to restart it every 2-3 minutes (even the keyboard on lock screen didn't appear to enter my password). So I had to uninstall lots of apps to free the storage and now I have 487 MB free, It had improved a lot but it's still slower than the past (with Ice Cream Sandwich). the apps starts slowly and sometimes they stop working and I have to restart the device.
here are my questions:
1- 478MB free internal storage is not enough for the JB? you have more free memory on your devices?
2- I've read that some have reset the device then update it and then reinstall everything, do you think this will help?
3- what about the problem of not connecting to PC? anybody has the same problem?
_______________
P.S. I've just master rest my device and install all my apps again and it worked, the problems are solved and JB looks good.

I would agree with that also. I was at the Gym yesterday morning when i updated my tablet .i get a wifi signal from the restaurant next door the signal was always weak when running on ICS but after i updated it to JB the connection seemed to be better The device seems to be snappier but i think im going to do a factory reset anyway and see what difference it makes.
Way better. I like the new layout as it unifies the Android experience. Faster and snappier. Was going to sell it soon if the Note 7 comes out but I may keep it. Via OTA. Battery seems longer too. Like the status bar percentage. Like the Video Player pop out to multi task. It's just great IMHO.
