First Impressions: [ROM][2.3.2] I9000XWJV1 (GINGERBREAD) for Galaxy S

The other thread has made me increasingly mental trying to find some decent information on what is working and what isn't working for SGS users upgrading to 2.3.2. I upgraded on Sunday evening without any issues and have been using it for the past 48hrs and have come across the following:
bad:
- no sip configuration options
- when integrated with MS exchange server, the unread count for emails never changes even after you read the mail
- default internet browser is horrifically slow, even with no other apps running in the background
- no samsung apps available (probably because this isn't an official samsung release)
good:
- android market works fine for me in Switzerland
- GPS works well with all the different apps i have
- wifi is interesting. it works, but i don't get full signal strength notification even when next to the access point
- FM radio, the most used app i have continues to work nicely
Overall I have been pleasantly surprised with this version. It's nice, although it's not an official release and is still leagues better than 2.1.x and 2.2. Would get a good argument from me about how it compares with 2.2.1..

Is this with plugins enabled or disabled (on demand)?

What makes the wifi interesting? Should it really be in 'Good' seeing as though you dont get full signal strength?

Well, for me, I am not downloading torrents on my phone. When I want to download, via wifi, apps from the market or something with dropbox, the wifi isn't not letting me down. I think there's a disconnect between what the graphic is reporting and the actual level.
It's good because it still works and is functional and allows me to keep using this on a daily basis despite its status.

no doubt. not at all complaining. just wanted to document on my side what was working and not working so that i can compare in the future or maybe someone has a suggestion .. like the one about my default internet browser and plugins.

Plugin setting is configured to "on demand"

Swype don't work.
GPS no satellites found.

well its very early to give impression but its memory hungry battery hungry proned to black outs but to be honest when the bits all run nicely its good ive been running it over 24 hours now apart from mentioned problems its smooth looking forward to updates maybeys they will change ui and give us a few of the gingerbread goodies we all wanted ie tv of --3d apps screen and so on if you go settings then about and repeatadly press on version 2.3.2 i think about ten presses see gingerbreads easter egg at least they left us that lol enjoy egg hunting

Thats a good idea.. Not only might it help Samsung, but it will discourage people from running it (and later whinging).

i got it running for a few hours and i generally enjoyed it, but the keyboard has no bulgarian (well it have in the options but it does not work) and if you run out of ram you are screwed (the phone hangs or gets tooo slow ).
as said samsung apps doesn`t work and the gallery freezes very often...
i hate that samsung removed the fancy animations and the black menu bar....

1-3D performance
It's not as good as it was on 2.2.1. If you test some 3D games like NFS Shift, you culd see that it doesnt run so well as it did on 2.2.1
Some people even reports that they can’t even run lot of 3D games.
2-GPS
There are reports of a good gps performance, but I have read somewhere that it's contanstly throwing some kind of errors or bugs, I don't know how to check that. I guess they know it thanks to logcat or something like that.
According to what I could read on another forum they changed lot of gps files nad not is very similar to the ones of Nexus S, that's a good thing...
3-Keyboard
It’s also a shame that they didn’t include gingerboard keyboard…
PS: Some people might think that this thread isn’t useful, but as we are being kind of betatesters for Samsung it would be nice if we use this post only to report the most common bugs founds, so maybe Samsung could have a look at it and solve it faster.

Try to use supercurio kernel with voodoo lagfix enabled and it should solve the problem. Works for me when I used to have same internet browser issue like you

Same here, it was so slow till i had to restart my i9000.

I've been using it for the last two days now (one of them with Supercurio's Voodoo Hack) and I've been happy with it in some parts, but quite unhappy in others.
Lag:
First of all, it seems the "Lag" that was fixed in 2.2.1 is back. Especially with memory-Hungry applications like the Browser, the phone tends to just freeze up for a few minutes without really doing much. I even had to pull the battery one time. This does happen less with the voodoo-fix, but it's still noticeable. Flash also does barely work.
Gingerbread features:
The new Gyroscope-Driver seems to work and it works really well. Skymap and Starchart both looked a LOT better when using them, no fidgeting around all the time anymore.
The new Gingerbread animations are NOT present in this rom. It seems like Samsung thinks they don't fit into TouchWiz, which is a shame. So no glowing edges when overscrolling and no screen-off or screen-on animation.
3D Performance pretty much seems to be the same as on 2.2.1 Games load a little slower, but I think that's mostly because we're using an un-optimized kernel.
The Bluetooth-Driver unfortunately still is the same as in Previous versions. So Neither Wiiremote nor PS3 will pair with the SGS, unlike on Cyanogenmod.
Samsung-Stuff:
As was stated before, Swype does not work. However, I am in the Swype beta and was able to install the Beta of Swype into this rom after deleting the normal swype with root explorer. It works fine, even Voice input does work.
All in all, it is clear that this is beta-firmware and it doesn't really offer much in terms of improvement over 2.2.1, at least not yet. Cyanogenmod 7, even tho it supports less hardware and is more unstable, runs a LOT faster and smoother than this, is more customizable and uses more of the new Gingerbread features.
For now, I'll be going back to 2.2.1, it's more useful as a daily driver, but this at least looks promising so far.

Reverting back to 2.2.1. 2.3.2 is way too slow.

Well considering this is a beta it seems alot of the features that are suppose to be in the final build are here left out. That will give the reason for quite some things missing ( some animations, effects, lock screens, keyboards....) Plus also cause of the beta build maybe even alpha who knows, the performance for me is really bad, it feels twice as laggy compared to the 2.2.1 releases. All in all this build is an striped down, not optimized build for the samsung devs i guess. We will have to wait for a better build leak. Cheers !

Agreed, I switched back to JS5, but for the moment I'm keeping JVE modem. It performs WAY better for me. No random UMTS-disconnects.
But as others said, it's just a beta.

ICS Impressions, please share

Ok so for those that have been able to upgrade to ICS (P6800 owners) what are your toughts?
Now this is what i am looking for:
A) What you like
B) Don't like
C) What would you like to have seen included but wasn't (if anything)
And since having the update what are you looking forward to doing that you couldn't or wouldn't with HC.
Please don't post any issues you have after updating, that is not what this post is intended for.

Well i don't think that i don't like anything but i haven't really found something that is faulty. It is definitely faster as i immediately noticed that it took less ram, than honey comb, to run. Feels pretty fast with go launcher HD to me and i love it completely. Although i thought that there would be camera improvements as tab 2 7.0 has the same 3 mega pixel camera but does 1080p recording. So i thought that it might be done with tab 7.7 as well with an ics upgrade.

Yea 1080p would have been a nice addition, but 720p is still good.

Well I love it to and made it up with Samsung:
- first with ICS that tablet really rocks it already did but now it's almost perfect
- smoother faster it seems especially the OOM killer seems more smart, and less memory used it seems
- no more problem with Itap rdp right click with bt mouse
- something I never mentioned. : I developed or try to develop a clone of pronto remote and debug using adb wireless
With HC I could not connect via adb on the computer using ethernet to adb wireless wifi due to packet loss... So had to disable ethernet and enable wifi. With ics no longer this issue...
- I used to have frequent sleep of death for the moment none
- I listen radio everyday through tunein somehow at around 1pm HC always rebooted by itself. Never bothered to figure out why... Now this no longer happen...
- no wifi issue ( some ICS user reported problems). I never had neither with HC except sleep of death or reboot that might be related to wifi?. I use Friztbox 7340 AP.
- my 100+ aps. Seems to all works (of course did not test deeply since yesterday) except gmd gesture control to hide the control bar
-once in a while but quite frequently using HC my EXCHANGE account would vanish...had to re-create every time... waiting to see on this one...Could be my remote application leaking....
So all in all very very happy with this tab and Samsung... Patience was what I missed
- I did wipe and did not have any problem if we refer to brick bug... But you never know...
What I like less
- dialog box theme gray without frame around
- it seems Samy addressed bur-in doing the bar black now....
I preferred it before and I don't have noticeable burn-in ( since march and extensive uses) except using color filter and brightness turned all down then I see slight yellow discoloration... Nothing to complain for me as the TAB HW screen etc are just so great IMO and outweight for me this small detail.
Seriously the TAB rocks for me...
Can you imagine 7.7 with quad core and dream about a 1080p SAMOLED display in a 7'7 TAB for me the perfect size!
I guess I continue buying Samsung.... Despite some of my previous comments... Waiting for the ICS on 8.9 now for my girl friend

My first impression
i installed the firmware through odin. it was not available on kies. so if i have to claim warranty ( god forbid ) then i guess i have to flash my country's HC firmware back
what i liked is that it is noticibly faster than HC. Apps load faster. lag is less. starting button lag is less. there have been no FC's and almost all of my games are compatible.
what i dislike or rather disappointed is that it does not look or feel much different than HC. no added functionality except Face unlock. what i would have liked is some features of S3.
i am running this for almost 24 hrs now. battery usage is same as HC.

I like that this device is actually usable now. I think I'm going to use it as my main tablet now. I didn't use it with HC because it was just so slow compared to my gt8.9 (running ICS rom).

My first impression: TouchWiz seems much smoother, Go Launcher HD feels the same. Under heavy usage of widgets TouchWiz is still great but Go Launcher HD not. I do love some Go Launcher features so I played around a lot and also tested the new 1.11 beta. But is still less responsive.

It's like a faulty motherboard replaced by a newer and faster one.
Seriously, like a new device, snappy, responsive, seems less battery hungry.
There is one 'custom rom" available, where EDaN has deodexed and removed some bloatware. I took that rom and took out everything social,photo and video editor, and some other minor crap.
Having 60 apps installed and tested it's like Christmas.
- dislike
had to discover I must install busybox to get Titanium working
had to install supersu myself, no biggy
no software based CWM, havent found compatible one, but one thats reboots to recovery anyway.
No powermenu at powerbutton
ugly blueish tint around quickmenu (with shortcuts for bt.wifi etc)
This all will be fixed when chefs get source or get impatient and offer CWM zips

Chainfire3d night mode seems to be not working...

my only gripe so far is that if you increase the font size to Large, some apps (mostly system apps) seem to have the font go to 'super large' e.g. google play, settings menu, whilst some apps its perfect.
Conversely, going down to medium, most apps are back to Honeycomb tiny font problem, whilst the system apps are fine
Seems like Sammy tweaked the touchwiz stock UI to display fine on medium size, without thinking that 'hey most apps the user will be using needs it set to large hmmmm'. Hoping AOSP ROMs will get around this issue

The tab is more responsive overall. Feels like a new device. But still not loving touchwiz--wish this is a pure Google device. Installing Nova Launcher partially fixes that. Only app not working out well so far is Battery Monitor Widget Pro--the mA usage keeps showing "0". Just about everything else survived the upgrade with no issues.
Add: mA information in Battery monitor widget works is set to "estimation" rather than automatic. So that problem is solved...

I never used tw always adw launcher ex on this device, everything is smoother with ics now we just need some custom roms and kernels so it can catch up to my galaxy note and asus prime

In HC, when ublong tap to paste, there are 2 options to choose, PASTE & CLIPBIARD.
in ICS, there's only PASTE.

I love this new upgrade. The lag is mostly gone, and it's actually more functional. And Chrome looks awesome on the screen.

It only seems to work with the Samsung keyboard. I thought that was also the case in 3.2?

I'm truly loving this tab with ICS. One huge problem is with my WiFi. I experienced once again as it just disconnected and never connected again until I shut it down completely and turned it back on. Logged onto another AP. I hate this problem as I thought I had fixed it. It seems like the WiFi module is overheated and shutdown or something....*SIGH*

when browsing, going back to the previous tabs is still being reloaded. That is my only gripe so far.
Other than that, everything is smoothhhhhh...

Impressions.
It's good stuff!
First: Hotmail seems to be staying put. Had big bothers with this as account would dissapear from tab. Seems to be fixed now, but need more time.
Second: SD Card behaving. Sweet.
Third: No waiting around for unlock screen to pop up when power button pressed. WTF was that anyway?
Fourth: Swype behaving itself. Kept on getting beeps before, and i would have to change to Samkey and back to swype. One crash so far in google translate.
Fifth: Browser no longer reloading all the time to homepage. seems more stable.
Sixth: Youtube actually responds when choosing a vid. If you hit back before and chose another, it was no longer responsive.
Seventh: AR much more responsive. 1sec response time. instead of 3-4. Overall response time much boosted. Has crossed the line from WTF? to hey... Sweet!
0'ed: Sammy did our super bloody expensive tab first. THANK YOU!
PS: flashed XL4 (United Arab Emirates) with Austrian version.(ODIN 1.85) Not a problem. Did Full Reset before flashing though. All went smooth. Im a very happy camper! Hope i could help.

lag in keyboard for JB 4.1.1

anyone found a way to get rid of the annoying lag that SOMETIMES the keyboard has in JB 4.1.1?

Try another keyboard. No kidding. Perfect keyboard pro is my choice. Its fast and customizable. Although it does take away the hand writing mode.

that is why i am in no rush to upgrade to jellybean, jellybean rendered my xoom completely useless it's completely unresponsive, i won't be upgrading when i get my note 10.1, staying on ICS.

JB for the N8000 is as close to flawless an update as I've ever seen. It adds a ton of new features and improves a lot of the existing ones. It improves performance too. The keyboard issue was a one time event that happened right after I updated. There's absolutely no benefit of staying on ICS.

yeah but how many apps do you have installed on your tablet for it to preform that smoothly? i'm not taking my chances because my xoom is now a useless paperweight, i don't want my note ending up the same way.

Over 100 apps and 30 home screen widgets. Most of us that have the N8000 have been on JB for quite some time. If there were issues they'd have been reported.

I had lag but realised it was only when using Chrome. Using the stock browser now everything is fine.

yeah tell me about it, i use firefox now, i still have to put up with the lag in the os but at least i don't have to put up with chrome anymore.
anyways if i do take chances with my note is there anyway to roll back the firmware to ICS if i get any problems?
i have roughly 82 apps installed on this xoom and that's far less than what is installed on your note and it's completely unresponsive, i have 2 pages of widgets installed on the xoom that is impressive if your note is not lagging at all, does it lag or freeze when you type? can you type fast and edit sentences without lag? what about the process button? can you swipe away processes without it freezing? can you unlock your note lockscreen without lockup? sorry for all the questions, i just want to make sure i make the right decision to install jellybean on my new tablet or not.

Why are you making such a big deal out of this? Dozens of N8000 owners have been on JB without issue for weeks. It sucks that you had issues with Motorola but that doesn't mean that every device you use in the future will have issues when updated. I have more apps and widgets than you and haven't had a single issue with JB other than the one time event of having to reinstall the language for handwriting and clear cache and data on the Samsung keyboard. Both took all of two minutes. After using JB no one could pay me to go back to ICS on the Note. What you do or don't do is your business and I'm only posting this so that your comments don't freak other people out.

I did experience same way ... keyboard lagging but actually JB UK version is better than german version ... less keyboard lagging ...
but I decide to back to ICS ... keyboard typing is very responsive ...
To back to ICS is easy ... you just need re flash again with ICS Rom via odin ... some time /not alwayas after re flash back to ICS .. it will hang at Samsung logo ... :fingers-crossed: but don't worry ... just go to "Recovery system Mode" press power + down button and "wipe data/factory reset" and reboot ... and every thing will be fine ... back to ICS

Hey. I dunno if this has been said but it takes time to read. I have also had this problem before and got the same problem again after a factory reset. Couldnt remember how I fixed it but checked the setting a bit and found a solution that at least works on the GN.
First enable developer options in the settings (to do this go into "About Phone" under settings and tap model number till its activated). Go into developer options and check the box for "Force GPU rendering". After that your keyboard should be smooth again. Fast typing is too much for the CPU? Anyways, hope this fixes your problem.

At the moment I am holding... and not updating... don't really see any advantage in jelly bean... i wouldn't be using google now anyway...

I personally don't think it is worth it -- however I did update to look for differences in battery life.
I see the cpu governor chosen by motorola to be laggier on some tasks. But the UI seems more fluid because of project butter. And I do not use google now because of the massive battery consumption.
The best feature which I do look is the improved keyboard and a better voice to text recognition, it is almost real-time. That is enough for my personal use of the device.
But if your usage requires more the following functions that you would loose such as FM radio and sleep mode as mentioned above then I would hold the upgrade until we start seeing other ROMs.

Thats great but you didn't mention if overall the battery life is a lot better or worse in JB?

My RAZR i is so much more buttery smooth, and Google Now is worth it by itself. I installed the 4.2 launcher from the Nexus 4 image and its a great match with 4.1.2

Mine. I think it was deactivated...

I like the Jelly Bean Update. First i was very happy about Google Now but in all honesty, disable it, burn it, kill it with everything you have.
My logs:
ICS, Display on 4hrs, Battery 20%
ICS, Display on 3hrs, Battery 50%
ICS, Display on 5hrs, Battery 29% (best by far)
So it varied a bit, although battery life improved in the last month somehow. Don't know, i switched some apps and deleted some .. A common value was that i had around 50% battery after ~2,5hrs.
Google Now:
JB, GN on, Display on 3,5hrs, Battery 12%
.. whatever, i didn't make that much screenshots of it. Let's just say that with 2hrs display on time i had about 35-40% battery.
I disabled Google Now yesterday and almost instantly i saw the graph flat out. At the moment i have 57% battery left with 2hrs 20mins display on time which could be a small improvement over ICS.
What i like about the update:
- Softkey bar is now transparent with LWP and even in other launchers, makes screen finally appear in it's real size and not cut-off
--> i could finally switch to Nova without any drawbacks, stock launcher froze widgets in ICS and scrolling to the right only was annoying
- Performs much better on homescreens
- stock JB softkeys look much better, stock animations in it.. yeah, i love it

It was overall more an update that made the phone work more the way it should. At least i have the expression, i think not everyone profits from the quicksettings and Nova launcher. Don't expect that your phone behaves completely different, you'll be disappointed by the more or less minor changes.

Well i really prefer Jb a lot!

Lol well its only because of the lack of features that JB has on Razr I and I didnt know what the features were before.. so i was excited but, not so much now..
i really want apps2sd that is initially why i was excited too..

So it varied a bit, although battery life improved in the last month somehow. Don't know, i switched some apps and deleted some .. A common value was that i had around 50% battery after ~2,5hrs.
Google Now:

.. whatever, i didn't make that much screenshots of it. Let's just say that with 2hrs display on time i had about 35-40% battery.
I disabled Google Now yesterday and almost instantly i saw the graph flat out. At the moment i have 57% battery left with 2hrs 20mins display on time which could be a small improvement over ICS.
What i like about the update:
- Softkey bar is now transparent with LWP and even in other launchers, makes screen finally appear in it's real size and not cut-off
--> i could finally switch to Nova without any drawbacks, stock launcher froze widgets in ICS and scrolling to the right only was annoying
- Performs much better on homescreens
- stock JB softkeys look much better, stock animations in it.. yeah, i love it

Not bothered about the lack of FM, never use it. I did use sleep mode a lot, buit I'll messa round with Smart Actions and get something good enough.
It's a lot smoother. When I first logged on here someone pointed out the stuttering in animation when zooming out of the home screen, which once noticed is impossible to ignore! That's gone and animations and transitions are a lot smoother.
Icons look tighter which is nice, although the digital clock is now a little squatter (not the widget, the lock screen).
Haven't used Google Now really, looking at how it can kill battery I doubt I will.
Dictionary and typing looks better. It doesn't automatically add a space after a word now until you start the next word, which although a little thing helps those of us who punctuate correctly; before hand I'd be having to delete the space to insert a comma or whatever. Takes some getting used to but a lot better.
But best of all the word 'Messages' now apopears complete and not cut off when displayed beneath the icon!! :laugh:
Early days, only updated last night, but first impressions are it tweaks the little annoyances out of the phone, so gets my vote :good:

Faster home screens and no lag? Yeah right. In my case swiping home screens lags substantially more after the JB update, not to mention even worse lags on waking up. Looks to me like the new CPU governor is responsible, will have to root and modify settings to return the performance back.

In my case it's really fluent, perhaps the best android update that I have seen so far (and I had a G1 with the very first built of android) this OS feels really mature now.

No doubt it's fluid comparing to G1 But in my personal experience with Razr i, the fastest firmware was the one I bought the phone with. Two consecutive updates consecutively degraded the performance.

it got available for the shield portable devices. i read that news on androidpolice.com
but didn't know that nvidia said it is available for our TN7 (which isn't true for the moment). maybe it needs a few days to roll out to every one.

i just got mine it in the UK this morning to. Currently rebooting after installing, hanging on the spinning green circle as it probably converts everything to ART.

I have also received it here in India. Captured the OTA as well. It is tegra_note_7_system_update_3.0__5.1.zip file size 446 MB.

you could try downgrading to kitkat it may work or it may brick your device. I would love to know if downgrading works. maybe i will try it once i pull the system images

Seriously, I'm disappointed too. We waited months for it and now it lacks it's charm.
Some people are saying that it's faster than before and even high-end games are not lagging even a bit.
I didn't try any game like that yet, but it still feels a bit laggy anyway.
Plus, the thing I miss the most is the split system of notifications on the left, and quick setting on right. And we can't change performance settings like before such as to use 2-cores. My quick settings widget is not working either.
I just updated, and I'm already missing my 'old tablet'.

Man i used to love this tablet a lot! It's a bit ruined now.
I still think NVIDIA should release smaller updates to better the layout and options. The notification bar is so narrow, it feels like I'm using my phone. Though, I don't have high hopes given how much time it took for this update. :fingers-crossed:

just a heads up System boot and recovery images have been pulled and test for Lollipop and uploaded to server. Now to work on updating the super tool to version 3.0 Lollipop

this update is a joke, now the tablet feels like a cheap **** with crappy graphics chip.. why the hell did they released if its gonna lag so badly ? if they said this update dont come because of this then i would be ok... now games that didnt lag before like clash of clans lags.. its like micro freeze what the hel lis this nonsense ? do i have to buy a new tablet now ? and i have a weird battery bug, it goes from 100% backwards to like 97% and below even if it says its charging with cable in....

Some improvements are there

The stylus recognition has improved immeasurably ,and thats the only positive thing that i can say about the update.

I'm going to try clearing out all the app caches or reinstall my apps. This is so much slower than before, and it commonly freezes up for a few seconds...especially when switching apps.
Before, we could control our processor to save battery by reducing the number of cores used. That option is gone completely.
I see no noticeable upside to the lollipop update.

Vibrate actually u can access the performance option its just hidden from us, check this thread how to access it.. for me it doesnt help 2 cores or 4 cores 30fps limit or 60.. still lags even basic games

Neat app but aside from the fact it's non native, its just too many steps to enable what I want. So I won't end up using it.

Before everyone trashes this update, someone should try a full factory reset... I've fixed many issues with previous updates by doing this, and with an update this big, I'd suspect it could help.
