WiFi Speeds - Nexus 7 - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am getting relatively low and inconsistent speeds on my Nexus 7 wifi connection. Anyone know what might be going on.
I have a Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 side by side, same network, same profile, same connection data.
If I run speedtest.net on the Galaxy Nexus I am getting good speeds. 20000kbps down 20000kbps down
On the Nexus 7 I frequently get as low as 1000kpbs up, and at best I get 8000
I am rooted, and using the WiFi fix package that was required for my office (on both devices)
Any thoughts ?

WiFi fix package? I'm not sure what that is exactly, but perhaps it is causing some issue on the N7, whereas it isn't causing an issue on the GN, but I have no idea.

It's this

WiFi doesn't work at all without it.

I just ran a speed test at 50 feet plus a wall. I got 18Mbps on a 20Mbps internet service. It bests just about all my devices for range as well.
Stock, rooted.

Nexus 4 bad reception?

We made the switch to t-mobile. In my possession currently I have 3 Nexus 4s, 1 HTC One, 1 Samsung Note 2 and 1 Samsung S4. All are on t-mobile The 3 Nexus 4s are constantly switching between 3g and h+ (and it is literally every couple of seconds you see the 3g/h+ icons switching). The other three are consistently 4g (though I swear they are all h+ based off speed tests). In any case, even when the Nexus 4s are on h+ speeds they are all slower then the other 3 phones on 3g.
I've tried different kernels/roms/radios on the Nexus 4s with no luck. Any suggestions? Nexus 4 reception just bad?
I am also very interested in this. I have been getting pretty bad reception on my nexus 4 in dt houston buildings. Thought an HTC One might offer an improvement.
Sounds like the One, S4 and Note 2 are on LTE and your nexus 4s are on HSPA+ because the nexus 4 isn't an LTE device (out the box). Also, the nexus 4 switching back and forth from H+ to 3G is normal behavior.
Dropping from HSPA+ to HSPA is normal. It's called "Fast Dormancy" and is used to conserve battery life.
If you are already on a custom ROM, try a different radio image (baseband version). Be sure to confirm it is compatible with the ROM first, or you may have other issues.

Wifi sensitivity weak?

Hi all, got my note 3 on Friday and I am wondering if the wi-fi is running completely OK. I get a message for instable wifi when get more than 8m from my router.
Same for you guys?
Envoyé depuis mon SM-N9005 avec Tapatalk 4
I found this particularly annoying as it shows even when the wifi is strong. You can disable the "feature" in wifi advanced sttings, just untick "Auto Network Switch"
Once I unticked that the message goes away and wifi works better I have not noticed any adverse effects.

Hi to all,
I bought the Note 3 yesterday.
Normally at night i use a lot youtube to see the news and other stuff
With the Note 3, the movies stoped several times during presentation, and it was strange because with my Galaxy S2 never got that
Then i tried to see the same movies with the S2 and they never stopped...
To check the wi-fi connectivity and speed i instaled the ookla speedtest and the results where this
Galaxy S2 - 21mbps download and 2mbps upload
Note 3 - 8 mbps download and 1,5 mbps upload
I repeated several times this test, at the same distance, selectiong the same server and the S2 was clean and stable at 20
mbps and the Note 3 was very unstable and the maximum speed was 8mbps
Can someone test this? comparing the wi-fi speed with two phones, same aplication, same distance, same server?
Thanks in advance
Pedro

Hows signal strength

I checked signal strength in store. I compared my sg4 to note3 and lg g2. The note 3 was a stable 108db every now and then it fell to 106db. My sg4 106db to 105db. The lg g2 did 101db.
I want the note 3 but I cant purchase until after an update proves it software related not hardware related

Well here's my story. Have two note 3 units. One is on. Att the other on t mobile. Both are on att service plans.
One phone shows -111 db other shows -106 db side by side consistently. My t mobile on att shows less signal compared to wife's att note 3. Is mine faulty? If don't know , just observation.

maybe its a frequency thing if not then maybe one is fault or that side by side the few inches make a big difference

Also bear in mind the lower the minus Db the better signal.
"Also bear in mind the lower the minus Db the better signal."
Another way of wording that is the closer to ZERO the better the signal.
Anyways I've found the Note 3 to be pretty bad... Seems like this phone has a pretty weak antenna in it...

tablet recommendations- Nexus 7 or Note 8

Hello Nexers!! I have an original Nexus 7 wifi and am looking into getting a new tablet and passing this one off to my daughter.
I am looking into the nexus lte (on tmo's free 200 mb) or the Note 8 wifi. They are pretty close in price. Any input you have on your nexus 7 2013 lte's would be much appreciated. I have a Samsung original Note so I am familiar with both OS. Thanks.

Well,
SCREEN
in one side, you have the note 8.0 which has a bigger screen (not only 1 inch more, it also does not have any soft keys) so you get a larger screen.. anyway, i PERSONALLY feel 7 inch is alright and the text looks sharper in the nexus 7.. because of these:
Note 8 has a resolution of 1280x800 in 8 inches, which leads to 189.000 Pixels packed into every inch.. its OK but it's not awesome.
Nexus 7 has a resolution of 1920x1200 in 7 inches, that's a total of 323.000 Pixels for every single inch, amazing for reading books, watching movies, reading magazines,etc..
---
GAMES & MULTITASKING
Note 8 has a quad-core 1.6GHZ Exynos processor, and a mali-400 GPU..
in my opinion, nexus 7 beats both
Nexus 7 processor is an underclocked snapdragon 600 or an overclocked s4 pro.. so it might be better than the quad 1.6 exynos processor.. the GPU adreno 320 of the nexus 7 makes the mali-400 look obsolete.
---
Nexus 7 has also gyroscope but that's not something really important..
Note 8 also some features not mentioned by me because i just dont think they are important, you can check them out here:
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Google-Nexus-7-2013,Samsung-Galaxy-Note-8.0/phones/8021,7677
not to mention nexus 7 have a much better UI which is Stock android vs Touchwiz. and as it is a nexus device you have a minimum of 18 months of full support from google which leads to having the latest version of android always.
well that's my opinion..
sorry for the bad english

nexus touchscreen creates the vacuum on balls
if you need bluetooth + wifi working at the same time, then Nexus is not usable.
for every Nexus owner:
1. connect bluetooth mouse.
2. connect to WIFI (normal one, 2.4 GHz)
3. stream music via WIFI
4. try to move bluetooth mouse...
old problem since Nexus 4 which has also Qualcomm chips - never fixed.
My cousin has a galaxy tab 8.0, I have a nexus 7.
Reading pdfs on nexus 7 isn't that good due to it's small screen.
That's the only better thing with galaxy tab. Nexus 7 rules everywhere else.

I used to have the Note 8 and switched to Nexus 7 due to the battery life and gaming performance of Note 8. Never looked back and battery life in N7 is superb., the display resolution is just awesome. No regrets and even more compact.

I stream music from wifi to bluetooth speakers without any problems, haven't tried to connect a mouse though.
Edit : just tried a Bluetooth mouse (Logitech m555b no problems either).

I had the Note 8 and have the Nexus 7 2013. The Nexus is better in every way versus the Note 8 unless you need the S Pen. Biggest complaint I had with the Note 8 was the screen.
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium HD app
For me I chose nexus 7
Note 8 pros:
1.bigger screen
2.pen (for drawing)
3.multiwindow
4.its a phone(better I guess)
Con's:
1.sluggish UI make it runs slower when used for a while
2.design not as beautiful as nexus 7(in my opinion)
3.TFT screen (obviously the IPS corning gorilla glass is better)
Nexus 7
Pros
1. Its a nexus-pure android experience which got updates faster than any non nexus devices)
2.awesome stereo loudspeaker
3.beautiful design(didn't mean to be bias lol)
4.better overall specs
Cons:
1.no multiwindows
2.some multi touch problems(which is already fixed by the new update)
Sorry if it feels like I'm bias because I just think that nexus7 have a very few bad points.
Since when google fixed touchscreen problem?
They think they did with 15R.
They made mine worse.

I wonder then, may it be some kind of manufacturing problem, a defect occurring for some models ?
Was missing what I might be missing, so picked up a Note 8, Went on sale at staples and got a 3rd tablet. Now I have 3- But lost Best Buy's receipt! Argghhhhhhh...... Anyone know if they will accept a return within the return period with no receipt on a best buy credit card? Have the receipt for the Nexus 7. I am keeping the Note 8. Screen size got me. $309 at Staples, but I might be stuck with 2!

I answered my own question today. Went back to Best Buy with the original Note 8 with no receipt. It was a little confusing to the clerk. I had originally ordered it online. So the sticker on the box she said was my receipt, but the online order was cancelled and I rebought
the same tablet with a store receipt( which I lost) on my best buy credit card. Make a long story short, she reprinted a duplicate receipt, and made the return and credited it back to my card.
So, Now I still have the Nexus 7 lte, and a Note 8 from staples that I got for $309! That return period is over, so I will keep the Note 8, but still have till Jan 14 to return the Nexus 7(I have that receipt!). I think that one is going back.

Speedtest Apple 5s vs Galaxy S4 WTF??

I use an Iphone 5S for work, and have a Samsung S4 for personal use, I overwhelmingly prefer the S4, but . . .
I did an experiment today, phones sitting side by side, both on LTE...
Iphone 5S - 24.66d/14.44u, ping 18ms
Galaxy S4 - 6.4d/1.12u, ping 119ms
What is going on here? Is our modem that bad? Anyone have any tips to improve speed?
There is no real way to improve speeds. There are some "tweaks" that exisit somewhere for 3G idk about 4G. It could just be that at that certain point when you ran the speed test the IPhone had better signal than the GS4.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk
They were sitting on my desk and I ran them both at the same time and to the same server. Both were showing two bars at the time.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Did you look in the speed test app that you were using on each phone to make sure that they had connected to the same server?
You can't base anything off of a single side by side speed test. You should do the test several (at least 10) times in different locations and at different times of day. Record the results and take an average.
At the very least twice when you are doing so to check for discrepancies.
Anyway, I have never had an issue with the LTE speed on GS4. Just ran a quick test and got 21 down, and 6 up. The LTE reception is kind of bad around here too.
