Nexus 7 Netflix Opinions? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everybody, I'm new to the Nexus 7 forums (coming from HTC Amaze/Samsung Infuse forums) and I was wondering how Netflix plays on this device.
I ordered one yesterday, but I'm curious as to whether or not it will be a decent experience. I currently have a Galaxy Tab 7 and the netflix app is HORRENDOUS. I mean, it takes about 5 minutes to load a tv show, and my Amaze connects (via the same wifi) within seconds. I'm just wondering how the speed is of the netflix app. I'm also curious about the video playback quality. Is it decent?
I can't wait to get my Nexus 7 and contribute more to this forum!

I have a fast internet connection to my N7 and Netflix is outstanding. YMMV

Netflix runs fast on mine, you sure it's not your Internet connection?
As soon as I click a video, it takes no longer than a second to load.
As for quality, here you go:

Works great on mine. I think I remember seeing an option in my account (not app) for streaming quality with 3 choices, I chose highest quality. Not sure how much of a difference it makes.

Yes, that's correct.
The setting you speak off is on your account via the netflix website, people should make sure about this setting.
I don't think you can receive HD streams unless on the highest setting.

Netflix is working well on N7. Quality is good. The initial load is as fast as desktop, but it sometimes pauses to buffer. Could be my router for all I know though.

Works very well on mine. No startup delay and quality is excellent.

Works great on mine! Quality is very nice, very crisp. Only issue I had was a few jitters during the first few minutes of playback on a Firefly ep and then it settled down and was smooth as butter for the remainder of the episode.

Works excellent. In fact on other tablets (galaxy 10.1)Netflix scrolling is sometimes laggy not so with N7
Videos look awesome

Netflix on N7 - FTW!

Quality is good, application is terrible. Sometimes it doesn't register to play unless you exit the app, scrolling is choppy unless you activate hardware acceleration for 2d rendering, browse menu randomly pops up when using search.

Would you think that's app specific or because of their new(ish) UI, which I personally can't stand.

Thanks foe the heads up! Even without setting this Netflix has been excellent on my N7.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

I've been running into this problem where it doesn't register play when i click the movie after search, but i think its a netflix bug. Other than that it plays great!

Thank you for the great responses. It's good to hear that I won't have any more Netflix woes And in response to the question about my internet connection: My phone loads netflix shows within seconds on the same wifi network as the Galaxy Tab, which takes a century to load, then when it does load a menu pops up saying "netflix is not responding" which delays video playback even further. Honestly I'm at the point where I think the Gtab is garbage and this is the upgrade I need. Thanks again!

Netflix works great for me on my N7, iPad, iPhone, XBox 360, Blu Ray player and iMac.

Same here. I think my Gtab is just cursed lol. Like when I had it on stock I couldn't even get it to load the app. It would just time out. Now with the cubed3 rom I'm able to get it ghetto-rigged enough to work. It's nice to know I will actually have a netflix-ready device!

Question mine doesn't show netflix in full screen is there a setting I'm missing?

Netflix is laggy on my Nexus 7. I have tried using a faster connection at work to stream, and it still lags. More like the screen freezes for a couple of seconds, but the sound is smooth. I have tried it after today's Netflix app update, and still having problems.

And here is Galaxy's S camera module from media it:
You can see that they are little bit different... So Is that mean, that Nexus S cannot record 720p in connection with hardware problems...
Thanks!
That is a humongous difference. That's probably what allows the Galaxy S the shoot 720p. Still kinda bummed over this.

Bummer.

It appears that the NEC-10170 found in the SGS allows for 720P video capture, obsviously missing from the Nexus S.
The 720p limitation has to do with the soc setup, not the camera hardware.
The camera drivers are apparently open sourced btw, so expect to see 720 put up sooner than the N1.

My speculation. I'd assume the NEC MC-10170 does some of the processing as to make 720P recording attainable/reasonable on the SGS. There was no room on the PCB to include it in the Nexus S. I can't really find a whitepaper on the NEC MC-10170 however.
I'm interested to see how this plays out.
Sorry to recall this old thread but even that both are different, is it possible to at least get a not laggy video recording driver???, can the settings be modified in any way or can the driver be obtained from another android phone that runs the same part?, I mean there is a driver modified for the fruity phone 3G and 3GS that enables the phone to record at 720p, is it possible to get a solution like that for the Nexus or are we condemned to crappy camera vid record???
LOL. I have no problems recording video. While it isn't 720p at least its smooth.

What's the problem with video recording on the original nexus s? Can you give a link to a YouTube video or something?
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
I had a galaxy s before my nexus and successfully transplanted the guts of one into the shell of another that had a dead sd card. The extra piece you see attached to the galaxy s camera is a chip that connects to the board of the galaxy, the camera has a separate chip for processing. A chip that processes 720p recording. The nexus s uses the phones hardware to process its camera. Either way, it comes down to software, not the processor. Pretty simple issue of drivers needed to process the camera image (theyre both the same camera) into 720p.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
Its not pretty simple. It can't be done in real time without the hardwade encoder. The phone simply doesn't have a fadt enough processor to software encode HD.

There is a very annoying and common lag, a glitch that happens once in a while, pls see the following examples:
a) at 0:09 >>>Here
b) at 0:41 >>>Here
c) at the first 20 secs >>>Here
d) at 0:15 >>>Here
e) this is mine, check at 0:10, a full second >>>Here
Not only that it happens but is random and is rather extremely annoying, I shot the other day a full 2 mins vid and it came nice but the next day I was recording for like 20 secs and it was there......btw, in the Nexus S running stock is very common and happens a lot, with the Roms is not as common but it does still happen...
If not half HD (720), at least make it so it can record smoothly, I got better vids from the fruity phone 3GS, the 9000, or my old and trusty W300i.

Naturally, being the replacement for the well-known Samsung i9000 Galaxy S, the Galaxy S II has to fit the very large shoes of its predecessor. And judging by the initial impressions from quickly playing around with the device – it does pretty well. The user interface is ridiculously snappy and the phone, despite its mammoth size, feels alive and light.
And just to give you a taste of what kind of performance we are talking about, we’ve prepared a short video of the Galaxy S II playing a 720p HD YouTube video straight within the stock Android browser.

Most people don't know it, but 720p youtube videos play fine on my SGS with 2.3.3 as long as I don't use the flash player from the market. The SGS II is going to be on another level I'm sure, but 720p flash files are already conquered.

Then how do you play them ?
It comes with a pre installed flash player. Which i suppose, like the atrix's own, is optimized specifically for the galaxy s.
I have a captivate right now, and it's running 2.2, and whilst it can play 720p youtube videos, they are choppy, so not much use. More than likely however, it will be able to play it more smoothly when a T&t rolls out the gingerbread update for it. If they ever plan to. =.=
No you don't understand there is a trick to play 720p flash videos butterly smooth (even Underclocked at 800Mhz btw) on a Galaxy S running froyo or up, he was not talking bout playing it straight within the browser. I just asked him to figure out if he really know this trick or not

It largely depends on the bit rate of the video. I could make a video that has a resolution of 480X272 that even the SGS II could not play. Bit rate is...not everything, but most things, with video.
Also, it sounds more like you're viewing the HTML 5 version of it than the Flash version, but IDK.
I was going to wait for the G2x. IDK now. Is this coming to t-mobile?

Simply put - yes. Not using the flash version from the market. Both HD videos from gametrailers and 720p videos from gsmarena play fine.
EDIT: It's actually running the 10.1 version of the flash player
@ tou
There is stutter for 480p videos. But It is only present at the start, due to the loading and I guess the cpu getting ready. After the start, it plays like any other flash video.
Yes the G2X is for TMobile although the specs of the SGS II surpass any device announced to date.

Can you play MKV's in the stock video player?
The lack of good out-of-the-box video support is what's holding me back from getting a non-exynos version of the sgs2.
This phone is a beast exynos or no exynos processor. if it cant play MKV format movies out of the box there's an app for that. i would really like to see a web browsing experience with the Hercules.

It should be able to as Samsung has a whole bunch of codecs which wouldn't be hard to implement into qualcomm s3 processor. The sound should be better as well compared to the original Samsung galaxy 2. Looks like Samsung can use qualcomm processor to its full potential unlike htc. I will be picking mines up at the store on release date. Now all we need is a forum.

What's wrong with my WiFi

So, I'm getting horrible WiFi speeds on my Nexus 7. Even though the "connection speed" looks like it should be faster than my One X, the Nexus 7 lags waaaay behind.
Both devices are connected to my home WiFi network, and both speed tests were done with the same server, at approximately the same time. Both devices are running CM10 nightlys (with the Nexus 7 being Fitsnugly's Kang). Soooooo... what's the deal? Should I post this in the JellyBro thread?

OK, I see that the "connection speed" changes, but with the devices side by side, the N7 always shows a better signal quality and higher "connection speed", yet always tests lower. And I'm not just complaining about a speedtest... the whole reason I started looking into this is because I couldn't get through 2 minutes of HD YouTube without 30 seconds of buffering

I don't have a solution, but I am looking for an answer to this question as well. I've had a similar experience with excessive buffering on YouTube videos that I don't have with any of my other devices.
Overall the download speed and browsing speed of the N7 seems fine, but it just constantly buffers sometimes for YouTube videos.

I'm using franco.Kernel r5 with the updated WiFi driver. To anyone with WiFi issues, what kernel are you running?
WiFi speed/connection issues are notoriously difficult to pin down, there are too many variables.
Try a few WiFi analysers on Play. Try connecting on different channels.

I was running stock kernel. Then I installed PA and used whatever the default cyanogenmod kernel is. I just switched to trinity. I'm not really plagued with problems or anything like that. I just occasionally have what seems like excessive buffering on short YouTube videos. I'm going to see if trinity affects it at all over the next few days.

Yeah, who knows why they took the "buffering options" out of the settings menu for the Nexus 7, but that seems like a dumb move to me! I tried copying the apk from my phone (which has buffering options) over to my Nexus 7, but it didn't change anything... it must be doing it based on the class of device or something. Paul O'Brien was able to re-enable it, but I haven't looked into how he did it.

Yeah, I agree, except that I'm able to make the vast majority of the variables the same between the two devices. I've got two devices, same WiFi, same channel, same physical location, same interferance, same rom... as far as I can tell, the only differences are drivers/hidden settings and hardware/antennas. Since most people don't have this problem, I feel like it's gotta be software/drivers/hidden settings, right?
Does anybody know how I can tell what protocol the tablet is connect with (802.11A/B/G/N)?
Thanks all!

Since most people don't have this problem, I feel like it's gotta be software/drivers/hidden settings, right?

If most people don't have 'this problem' but everyone else has the same software and drivers then it's unlikely to be either the software or the drivers and more likely to be either hardware or environmental issues.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but environmental issues are ruled out with the One X, sitting right next to the Nexus 7, performing flawlessly, and software is a whole helluva lot easier to modify/corrupt than hardware. I guess I should start with a full wipe and go from there... I was just hoping to get some new ideas (and I DO appreciate your response!).
Thanks,
Billy

Youtube Playback... HORRIBLE quality!

Hello everyone, I'm a new S4 i9505 "happy" owner.
I'm happy with everything about my new phone, EXCEPT when it comes to the Youtube application.
Whether I'm on 3G/4G or Wifi, the quality of videos is definitely BAD... borders look blurry, unacceptable. And I'm talking about HD videos. Videos that are supposed to be 1080p.
Yes, the HD option is turned on.
My friend owns an HTC One and Youtube videos looks just great, just the way they're supposed to be.
How is this possible? Do I have a defective device? In any other situation the display looks perfectly fine.
Did anybody else notice this?
Thanks in advance.
I just checked and it happens to me too ... i have the gt i9500 ...
have you guys tried updating the application an update came out a couple of days back ...
i hav i9500 and didnt face any problems like this till now....
UPDATE:
Ok, this is pretty strange.
I decided to uninstall the downloaded Youtube app and restore the stock one (I run the latest Samsung firmware).
SURPRISE! Problem is GONE! Videos are now crystal clear! Just as they should be.
I wander where the problem is with the latest Youtube app... During the playback I click the "HD" symbol (option on top right of the screen) and it seems turned ON (no red line under though.
Anyone else tried??
Quality on my i9100 is poor even in hd. I'm running carbon room 1.8 and things were fine before YouTube update...
I have the same problem on my Galaxy S2 LTE. It has nothing to do with my network, Wi-Fi, or video quality as I've read elsewhere.
Videos looked clear with the old YouTube, but when they updated the interface, videos look pixelated when in full screen. It's like they left out the smoothing for when videos get resized.
Yup I can confirm the video quality on the latest YouTube app it terrible.
I used an older version and it's great

Well, no. Video quality on the latest Youtube app (v5.021) is simply awesome :good:
Have you increased the video quality in setting's? I'm playing full 1080 videos. No issues here

I have the same problem with the new UI (latest version). Playing movies in HD quality looks a lot worse than in the previous version. Don't really wanna roll back because I love the new design. Hope someone finds a fix.

Anyone found a solution yet?
I hate the new version's video quality.
I 've been Googling for a solution but haven't found one yet. There are multiple topics about this though but none have a solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2414543
http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/youtube/nRKQSLD95Qw
http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1885518
http://androidforums.com/nexus-7-2013/765061-youtube-poor-video-quality.html
I wonder if it 's only a minority that is bothered by it or if people just don't see it. I 'm gonna do a rollback and I 'll try and post a before & after pic to show the difference.
Ok, I 've made a comparison of one of my movies with the two latest versions:
Version 4.5.17 (previous version of Youtube, with the old UI):
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Version 5.0.21 (latest version of Youtube, with the new UI):
You can clearly see a difference especially around the edges. It 's harder to spot in a still than in a movie but you can still see it. Look closely at the edges of my jacket, the snow, the funbox or the treeline
I 'm sticking with version 4.5.17 until Google fixes this. Even though I like the new UI, it doesn't really add anything besides the stupid floating window which I actually find annoying.
My device is a Desire HD running Mustaavalkosta 's CM10.1 SR1.1 ROM. Resolution of this device is 800x480 on a 4.3" screen.
People keep assuming it's to do with video quality, but it's not. Poor video quality creates a kind of fuzzy blurry. Bad resizing without smoothing (is it called interpolation or anti aliasing?) creates a sharp pixelated effect which is what's happening.

That is exactly what it looks like. You see this a lot in games but I had never seen this before in movies. It 's like they disabled AA for some reason.
Got the new Galaxy Note 3 and am glad to say the pixelated effect is not present on stock Jellybean. It is still present on my Skyrocket with CM11, but I guess it doesn't matter anymore.
