Phone restarts on it's own.? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I been having this issue lately where my phone loves to "restart" on it's own. I thought maybe it was the rom I was running, but I was dead wrong. I flashed every rom/port and it seems like I keep getting random restarts, so if someone knows how to fix this, I am all eyes. Thanks in advance

have you tried a hard reboot?
Try removing battery, removing sin card, and memory card (if any) and restart

I just did it, right after you posted that comment. Will update later today on how it goes. Thanks alot for the help you have provided for me and maybe others that has encountered random reboots.

Fold a small piece of paper and put it under the battery cover. Your battery could be loose.

I checked that. It's not loose or anything, it may be the roms I try to run on here. Cause right now I am currently on SkyTouch rom and I haven't had one random restart from it.

suffering from random shutdowns?!

hello friends. is your g2 suffering from a sudden shut down? tryin to type a message to your mom, just for your phone to shut off so she thinks you dont love her? loose your epic score on a game with a phantom black screen? your g2 is not alone. SSS (sudden shutdown syndrome) is a common disease found in many g2. what can you do to treat/prevent SSS?
check your sdcard lock friends. my g2, too, suffered from SSS. its a horrible disease that can interupt your life. upon goign to a tmo store to show them, the guy opened up my batter, clicked the sdcard securely inplace, and was not able to get it shutdown since. i was going to replace my phone. now, i dont have to!
if your sdcard door automatically opens when you pull the battery, it is not properly secured in place. press it down til you hear it snap in place.
hope this helps some of you guys out there with SSS.
This really doesn't have anything to do with the sd card disconnecting momentarily. You can completely pull out the sd card with the phone running and it won't shut down. My guess is instead that it was either coincidence for you or your G2 wasn't making proper contact with the battery. Let me know when you start having shutdowns again ^_^

Technically you can't remove the sd with a shutdown.you need to remove the battery to get to it.

Solution to the reboot by shocks

I have noticed that my arc sometimes rebooted when it was on my pocket or i leave it into the table. I found that it is caused by bad contact of the battery with the pins.
It has been said that the solution is to put a paper between the battery and the case, ok this is not the true solution.
The real solution is to put a hard and thin carton into the apperture between the phone and the battery making pressure(the apperture where you introduce the nail to extract the battery). This will prevent the pins to "not contact" during a little shock and prevent the restart.
Try and comment. It works for me.
can u post some pictures? so i get some idea how to do it
I don´t know how to put pictures.
somebody tell him how to upload pictures

Just post as an attachment (go to post reply option, scroll down and click on manage attachments, the on the pop up browse and choose the photo to upload) or you can also use third party websites to post and then post the link here.
best way is to upload pictures on sites like photobucket.com etc........then link them to forum...........
I had this issue 3 times since I bought my arc in late March
It´s simple just put a carton to push the buttery up against the pins
Have you tried reinserting the sd card a couple of times? I think thats what did the the trick for my arc, either that or reparing the firmware.
I am pretty sure the random reboot has to do with 2.3.2 as I had zero encounter of reboot so far after upgrading to 2.3.3 a week ago.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA Premium App
Yep, could be related to 2.3.2. I had dropped my phone on the floor from my pocket twice and on those two occasions, the battery cover came out but the phone stayed alive without reboot. Once was running 2.3.2 and another time was after the upgrade.
Now the problem I have is the moving back panel. It is not a perfect fit anymore!
I just did that, hopefully i aint gonna get any more reboots by tapping it again
I'm not experiencing this or any kind of other problems with my Arc. Even with 2.3.2 my phone hasn't rebooted once. Maybe I was just lucky?
Anyhow, the reason for those reboot by shocks can happen because people take the battery out too often by changing the SIM for example or by swapping memory cards. Therefore the pins get loose over time.
I never change my sim card or memory card. The problem appeared when I took my arc out from my pocket. I wonder if it is due to pressure exertion on the power button or the back cover
Sent from my LT15i
Because it's so thin, blaming the back cover would make more sense. Then again, it has to be very flimsy for it to make the battery "move" inside the phone and lose contact due to shocks.
Just a few minutes ago, the phone was off when I took it out from my pocket again

The same happened for me today and even yesterday
ANY Solution or advice?
Same Here
I have have had the phone off once or twice even after the upgrade to 2.3.3 as well. I noticed the other day that it was on my desk (on top a roll of parcel tape) and it rebooted without any knocks or nobody near it as well ??? but been OK for the last few days. But after it did this I took out the battery and gave a clean and put back in and fingers crossed .....
Well, very nice, my phone went off and rebooted automatically today when I was using it. The screen became dimmer and dimmer then all black in 2 seconds and pixels were disappearing from the screen in the two seconds.

probably the ROM,
Are you using dual-boot from winmo with Haret or magldr SD or magldr nand?
I would use a new ROM.
I have same problem even with wm.My phone gets very hot either freeze or restart. I decide to send it back to TMO.

yeah that's hardware.
Two two most popular causes of freezes / reset loops on overheating, are bent battery pins (check and try to delicately strengthen them if so), or defective mainboard (requires replacement). Check this post for more details and references (sorry too lazy to write it all over again)

If you're using an SD build and plugging it through "diskDrive" mode then it should freeze. DiskDrive is highly unstable on SD builds and users are adviced not to use it.
there are plenty of safer options to plug your phone to a PC.
Overheating is also a common freezing cause, if you've overclocked your phone, try it in normal/underclocked speeds. Also like the post above, check the nattery pins.
You might as well check the SD Card for system file errors since you've been forcefully turning off the device. and try to Defragment it using MyDefrag, it improves performance a bit.
If you're using an SD build, some builds perform way better when you copy a fresh system.img file from the original download. this keeps your settings and apps but resets system files, removing anything you might've messed with.
If all of the above fails, try a different ROM/build or try a different SD card.
Were you messing with wifi calling?

It's good to know about the bent battery pins as listed before so even though I seen you sent it back if you have problems with the phone that's a good place to start looking. My phone wouldn't start at all and I didn't have any clue of what the deal was.. Then checked the pins and gently pushed them back which fixed my issue.

[Q]HD2 WP7 Mango freezes when boots up 80% of the time. PLS HELP

Hello I have an HTC HD2 WP7 Mango/Android via Magldr. Whenever I boot up Windows it tends to freeze up at the main screen about 80% of the time. It forces me to pull the battery and try again. Sometimes it takes me at least 30 mins to finally start windows because of battery pulls and restarts.
When it starts up and works it'll be fine and never lock up.
Any help? Anyone experience this problem?

ive done that but with this new mango it locks up frequently during boot. I dont want to have to hard reset everytime i turn my phone on.
Id rather just keep this new updated windows and deal with the bull.

you need to use the cab sender to send "DEV_STORAGELOCK" to your phone
after reboot it will appear on the app list. Click it and click yes to unlock sd card, Now it should appear on a computer.
It took 27 mins to start windows today after at least 25 battery pulls!!!! WTF this cant be good for the phone.

bent battery pins can cause these problems, and these problems can cause bent battery pins!
i decided to go to NAND for a while or atleast there a better mango update or tweak that help with the freezing.
I'm also having this same problem, except that it only takes me like 10min to get it to work as opposed to your 20min. Hopefully we find an answer soon because I really like Windows Phone. I become afraid to restart my phone because it may take ages to finally work again.
The source to your problem
Try another SDcard, preferably class 2.
I tested 3 sd cards (all class 4), and all gave the EXACT same problem as you have.
Switched to a class 2, 4GB and no problems whatsoever.

I think you're absolutely right. It looks like 3 main pins and the first one was bent. I bent it back and it didn't even power on. After messing with it for a while, this time it took about 2 hours after I bent the pin, it finally booted back up.
So what can I do? Try to straighten them out and hope for the best?

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate the input.
i think what you should do is check your rom. i had the same problem so i just reinstalled everything. now my phone works perfectly.. just make sure you didnt skip a part.
When mine does this it seems like an overheating issue. If I take the battery out and let it sit for a minute before putting the battery in and trying again it seems to work just fine.

[Q] Dead HTC HD2 (Why? Don't know - explanation inside)

Hi
I was playing an android game, can't remember wich one, when suddenly my HTC HD2 turned unresponsive (bloqued), so I removed the battery and powered it on again. When I did this, the bootloader opened but it seemed bloqued too, no android message, no bootloader opening, anything... And once again, I turned it off and powered on but now without any response, completly dead (Only a small vibration, diferent to the one when it power on. [equal like the one previous to the boot one, I don't know how to explain])... No charge led, no bootloader, no tricolor, but without any flash or something similar (Like most posts I have read)
Anyone knows how to fix it?
My htc is a HTC HD7 T-Mobile with MAGLDR (last version) and android 4.0.4 completly working before this
Thank you!
You mean you have an HD2 with MAGLDR, WP on NAND and ICS on SD, right?
First thing to check is the battery pins, easily bent after a battery pull. Make sure they are straight and make contact with the battery. Second thing, are you sure the battery has enough juice? It could be just an unfortunately-timed run out of juice.
If above is all checked, was the phone running hot (like .. HOT) prior to the freezing?
Thanks

Thanks for your answer!
Not sure of the battery juice, I will try to charge it with a broken USB, directly with the cable or with another battery.
Pins seems to be OK, but I don't know. When the phone turned off I was only playing a 2D game ,for no more than five minutes, so I don't belive that it might be hot.
Some unsuccessful attempts
Okey, i tried to charge the battery with the usb but it does not work, so I tried to boot the phone using directly a 3.5 batery (similar to the 3.7 Output of the battery) and it does not work too... The mobile is completly unresponsive, the same vibration in the begining but nothing later..
Thank you!

Well, this is weird. ................. I recall seeing a similar problem somewhere around here, but I don't know if it was fixed or not. Even if it were, I don't know how we're supposed to look for it.
You can try some basic stuff like :
- Changing the battery *try to use an HD2 one*
- Try removing the battery, sim and sd card. Leave them out for a few units time and put in the battery back and try it again.
You can try your luck and search the hd2 (you can use the link in my sig) fora with potential keywords..
.. I can't think of anything else ... I'm sorry.
More of it sounds like BGA failure. Did your phone got hot while playing games?
Also what settings on CPU were set?(freq and voltage)

I have already asked him about that and he said "When the phone turned off I was only playing a 2D game ,for no more than five minutes, so I don't belive that it might be hot."
One more thing you can try, put the device in a sealed bag and put it in the freezer for about ten minutes. Then try to boot it up into bootloader (boot up while holding volume down). If it boots, then it's 99% the infamous overheating issue.
Report back.

It is widely known that putting an HD2 with a faulty mainboard in a freezer for a few minutes will make it more likely to boot up (before it freezes or restarts again).
I don't know *why* this happens, I just know that it does. If you are not convinced, please do your own research
I do know how does BGA fail, and putting your phone in freezer WON'T do any good. It can only worsen the fate of phone, further damaging board or battery.
With all respect, don't give advice if you don't know what are you doing.
Anyway.
If you got warranty - RMA
If not, get infrared soldering station or look for one. Resoldering BGA(ball grid array-micro soldering points) on motherboard could help - CPU BGA tend to get loose sometimes. It's just the way it was designed.
Otherwise, if failed, replace mainboard.
That's it.

How can you be so sure it is faulty BGA as to start saying use this and use that?
I did not say the freezer will fix the problem, I just said it will help us identify it!
And to reply to the "won't do any good", here are two examples OF MANY:

@op An advice: don't do any of the IR soldering mentioned above or even open the device until you are certain it's the mainboard.

Because that's the symptoms of faulty BGA. System stop. Different vibration pattern and bootloader lockout. If memory failed, it's on motherboard. If CPU failed it's also on motherboard.

How in the world does freezing help identify motherboard fault? It's just nonsense.
Freezer trick can help identify BGA contact issues as the cooler temp contracts the CPU & can temporary cause the the solder points of the ball grid to contact and also keeps it cooler for longer sometimes allowing for longer run time or boot progress.
You are not freezing the device to -20 just simply quickly getting the device cool.
Done it myself to more than one hd2 & is a useful diagnostic prior to buying & swapping a mainboard or getting a current one reworked.
Okey, I tried again and nothing happened. I will call to HTC tomorrow and ask for a diagnostic (And price of repair...). I will coment it here as soon as I'll know something. Thank all of you for the help
