You did remove the uSD card after rooting, right? I've rooted using Touchnooter many times, and my boot screen still shows "Read Forever" (not rooted forever).
If that's not the problem, you might reset back to stock to try again. Be 100% sure you have a good backup before attempting this!

thanks for reply
My nook is not registered. I don't have access to wifi and don't have credit card. can i upgrade firmware on unregistered nook .

Yes, you can upgrade to 1.1.2
Go to http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Software-Updates-NOOK-Simple-Touch/379003175/ and follow the directions.

Why dont you have WiFi working? You do not need credit card to register, you can select to "add it later".

hello everybody
my nook is now registered
. i first followed the cwm minimal touch method.i burned the 2gb cwm img file on my sd card then copy beta two zip files . i inserted the card in nook and turned it on. surprisingly nothing happened. nook went on normally and no rooting done.i then switched to nook devs mr gabriel method. i downloaded 2.1.31 and burned it in card.after inserting i started on nook .the online instructions cam and then after 2 minutes the nook page started but my nook hanged.i somehow managed to switch off nook by pressing power and right side to side buttons. i again tried to do it but to no gain. i deregistered and again registered the device and then downloaded the touchnooter 1.6.24 image and then repeated the process. rooted forever screen comes but my nook again hangs . i have updated my nook to 1.1.2 but now even after deregistering and registering my nook is not downgrading to 1.0.0 firmware. i m again stuck .please guide what should i do .
thanks in advance

1st , write ur backup image , then do hard reset to ur nook and if ur software version is 1.1.0 upgrade to 1.1.2 and then try reroot with minimal touch nooter .... and follow the instructions very carefully
good luck

A few questions to the NST, just got mine!

Hello,
I'm new to the Nook Simple Touch and received it today. It's awesome so far!
1. Could someone tell me how I install CWM with it, is there a guide? I can't find any guide on the development section on xda, sorry.
2. Also, what is the best method to root my NST? Touch Nooter or Minimal Touch or another one?
3. Is there a stock ROM somewhere? I would want it, if I want to set my Nook back to the default settings and wipe everything if I'll mess it up somehow.
4. Can I update to the latest version 1.1.2 if I want to
+ root it
+ install CWM
+ install the multitouch function from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1563645
Is everything of this working with 1.1.2 or do I need 1.1.0?
5. And my last question is, what's the difference betwen N2E and NST in the development thread? (I know, NST = Nook Simple Touch, but what is N2E? I thought it's also the Nook Simple Touch)
I'm really, really sorry for those questions, but I'd be very happy if someone could answer them. I don't want to make something wrong with my beloved NST.
Thanks in advance!
Greetings,
Draygon
Welcome to the community!
Before you do anything, you're going to want to backup your Nook. Each Nook contains information specific to that Nook, such as the MAC address, serial number, etc., so this backup will be what will restore you to a stock out-of-the-box Nook. Just make sure you have an external card reader to write noogie.img to the SD card.
CWM is here, but there's no real reason to install it to the device itself. It's easier to install it to an SD card and just put that in when you need it. There's no custom ROMS yet, and it's better to use the backup you made earlier (hopefully).
Also, for rooting and installing multi-touch, I made a mini quick-start guide here.
For the most part, we haven't noticed much difference between rooting 1.1.0 vs. 1.1.2. And N2E stands for Nook Second Edition (this Nook came first).
Enjoy your Nook!
Hello Googie, Thanks a lot for your answer, they helped me a lot!
For sure I'll do the backup at frst.
Am I able to use N2E from the development forum on the NST? (like touchnooter?)
So, it's safe to update to 1.1.2 and root it? Because I have seen a few people on this forum complaning about bugs with a rooted 1.1.2, which aren't there with a rooted 1.1.0, such as that the search function is not working in the play stote with a rooted 1.1.2.
Would you recommend touch nooter or minimal touch?

The N2E is simply another name for NST, so it's safe to use anything with that name.

There's not much difference between 1.1.2 and 1.1.0. B&N just addressed some WiFi issues with this update, not much has changed otherwise. And Google caused the searching issues by replacing Market with Google Play, it's just coincidence that the update came out when Google changed it.

I myself use Minimal Touch, but I haven't tried TouchNooter before. TouchNooter has some extra things with it (like a tool that under-clocks the CPU when it's not in use to save battery), but some times it fails to install correctly. And there's also the possibility that Market just won't work for 24 hours... but it's broken anyway.
Thanks again for the answers.
There's just one problem I have, which won't let me backup my NST:
From this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1142983
I want to use the guide to backup the NST for windows 7 (post #2),
There's a big problem: the link to the noogie.img (which should be here: http://nookdevs.com/NookTouch_Rooting) was deleted.
1. Where can I get this noogie.img now? Could someone please upload it?
2. And the next problem is, how do I boot the noogie.img, if I have it? jocala just wrote, that you have to boot it. Not, how to boot it.
Thanks in advance!
http://www.thoughtsofthemasses.com/noogie.img.gz
burn the image it to sdcard, switch off your nook, plug in sdcard and turn nook on.
And small puzzle at the end: what does following message say about the nookdev page?
10:50, 11 January 2012 Spec (Talk | contribs) deleted "NookTouch Rooting" ‎ (content was: '#REDIRECT Nook_Simple_Touch/Rooting/Manual')
Are there any requirements that a microSD card must fill when used for this purpose? I have two fail notches on my lipstick case.
The first time I pulled a 256mb microSD card from an old phone; fail. Later I read it is recommended to use a Class 6 or greater. I bought a Class 10. Again, fail.
The adapter is electrically passive so that should not be a factor, right?
I never pay attention to that class stuff.
I always buy the Micro Center brand 4GB at $5.50 because they are only $1.50 more than 2GB.
Apparently they are Class 4.
Thank you, Renate NST. Then my problem lies elsewhere.
Between WinImage and Win32DiskImager has either shown a higher success rate for this project? Is one generally preferred by the community?
I use Win32DiskImager.
I've got about 10 different backups on my hard drive right now.
I've bricked my Nook multiple times trying to hack internals and restored from backup.
My backups end up by being 1,957,616,640 in size.
I don't use Clockwork or anything.
Thank you for providing the file size, that was helpful.
Is it odd that that the second backup (using noogie.img and DiskImage_1_6_WinAll.exe) was almost twenty-five times larger than the first? 79,675,392 verses 1,958,739,968.
If your backups are about 1.9xx Gigs then you are correctly backing up the entire physical internal memory of the Nook.
If your backups are 70 Megs or so you are either backing up only one of the 7 partitions on the Nook or
else you are backing up your SD card with Noogie on it.
Note:
After writing a Noogie image to an SD card you will find that the total size of the SD card has been reduced to 70 Megs or so.
To reclaim the entire size of the SD card for other uses you will need some tool like Partition Magic.
Windows Disk Management can not by itself repartition SD cards.
There's also something out there called SD formatter.
Or once you have your Nook running, you can just format it from that.
You have all been so very helpful. After watching the noob video I figured you people ate noobs for lunch.
Renate, you were right: I backed up the SD card. I hate to think of all the others who have done the same and won’t know the backup is useless until they need it. It’s an easy mistake to make but knowing an approximate file size was an excellent deterrent against disaster. Thanks for the heads up.
The rest was pure voodoo but I’m rooted. Still, there were some surprises and I have two final questions.
• Between failed rooting attempts, while in original mode, I updated the NS2 to 1.1.2. After rooting the device is using 1.1.0. Should I look for a way to root into 1.1.2 or just be content?
• Also while in original mode I wanted to change the registered gmail account for the device. I created a second B&N account using my preferred gmail, then did an “Erase and Deregister” to reregistered the device with the preferred gmail account. However, after rooting I couldn’t log into YouTube with my reregistered, preferred gmail, only the first gmail was accepted. Yet, when looking in Settings\Device Info\About Your Nook\Owner, my preferred gmail (not the first gmail) is listed. How do I get the rooted Nook to recognize my preferred gmail address in the market?

need NST backup

need nook backup too
Hi,
did you find anywhere backup image?
I also need one, since my backup is corrupted and I already formatted, destroyed, deleted the NST's partition table.
I only have backup from a Nook touch Glowlight, but it is already registered to my friend, and her nook's serial (and other data in the rom partition) is different, so I cannot register again at B&N.
I think the solution would be a clean (unregistered) factory backup, or something like that.
Maybe you already have this, or you may know other solution.
If so, please share with me.
thanks in advance

ok , first .... u must have factory partition , it's VI file (have ur device ID , and serial , and mac address) .... then get any backup from same device model and and firmware version and burn it with ur nook then just replace files from factory partition to urs nook by burn ur old bad image (like my condition) on sd and boot up with ur nook with noogie and u must on linux OS by any linux live cd then after u did that restart ur nook and do hard reset to ur nook ( after your nook start up then very fast press two lower button on both right and left side) then u must have all register acc and talk to barns and nobol gently and tell them i just erase my nook and now it doesnt work and dont referee to anything that u root , then depend on ur luck (like me) they will active ur device again
good luck man , and i will try help u as i can .... let me just relax cuz i have search for 1 month and now i need relax and celebrate with my victory
have a nice day and good luck all

Nook won't boot after factory reset.

Hi all,
Nook simple touch. Version 1.1.2
I searched but could not find an answer to my issue.
Attempted to root nook using this:
http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch/Rooting
used touch nooter 2.1.31
made sd card. looked good
put sd card in, screen flashed, removed, rebooted.
unlocked screen, touched andriod.
skipped login to google services, enabled location services.
at this point it took me to what looked like the normal nook screen. i could not find the menu for this instruction:
"Click the Menu button (On top at the right, next to the time.)."
Rebooted device. Booted back normally, no signs of any modifications.
Turned off and got a snack.
Booted again. stuck on read forever screen.
Start searching around.
Attempt factory reset with method 2 and 3:
http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch_restore_to_stock
No luck.
Attempt to restore 1.1.0 image with clockwork:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360994
Image burns fine to SD, but when trying to boot into recovery only shows option to do factory reset, which continues to fail.
Does anyone have ideas on how I can fix this? It is still locked on the read forever screen, and factory resets do nothing.
Thank you,
Tajjat
do u have an backup from ur system??? if u did so boot with noogie and b urn ur backup image to ur nook and go back to original status , but if u didnt take so , listen to me careful

and facory reset fail cuz root have change some files in almost partitions , so .... u must have the original OS for nook that can enable u do right hard rest for ur nook

I got the nook to CWR and used this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1386640.html
as per @speedman2202's post with the updated link at the bottom.
The device will boot now. But now when I try to register the device it says

Error
Sorry we're having trouble setting up your Nook. Please shutdown the device and try again.
If the problem persists, contact Customer Support at 1-800-THE-BOOK (1-800-843-2665).
I know it took the new verision, because device used to be 1.1.2, now it says 1.1.0
Tried looking on B and N website to see if my nook was already registered, as per this thread, and it wasnt.

To get the update manually, you can download the software update to your computer at any time and then copy it onto your NOOK Simple Touch. Simply follow the steps below.
Manual Download Instructions:
1. From your computer, click here for the software update file. Select Save and select Desktop as the location. Do NOT modify or change the downloaded file's name in any way. Do NOT open the *.ZIP file.
2. Tap Settings on your NOOK's Quick Nav Bar, then tap Device Info and make sure your NOOK battery charge is at 20% or more.
3. Connect your NOOK to your computer using the USB cable that came with your NOOK. A new, removable drive should show up in My Computer (Mac users will see the NOOK drive appear on the desktop or in devices). You should also see a "USB Mode" message on your NOOK screen.
4. From your computer, drag and drop the downloaded *.ZIP file onto the main directory of the NOOK drive. Do NOT open or unzip the file. You should not create a new folder on the NOOK drive or add the file to any other existing folder.
5. Eject or Safely Remove the NOOK drive after the file transfer is complete.
6. Your NOOK will automatically recognize the file after a few minutes when it goes to sleep mode, and proceed to install the updates.
7. Please do not turn off your NOOK during the installation process.
8. Once the installation is completed, your NOOK will automatically restart.
9. The software has been successfully updated; tap on the small "n" that appears in the status bar for additional information.
Your NOOK must remain turned on while the update is being installed. Once the software is installed, your NOOK will reboot itself back to the Home screen or the last screen you were on. To verify you have the latest update, tap Settings from the Quick Nav Bar, tap Device Info, then tap About Your NOOK and check to see that your software version is 1.1.2.

ok , now i think u must call BN live support and becareful when u talk to them , log in ur real name and ur last register acc on ur nook before got error and post ur nook serial that all required to talk to live support .... then do what i said in this post and if they asked u why u got this screen , tell them i found my screen got ghost effect so i did hard reset factory and when i try log in , i cant register my acc
and make sure u have the last register acc username&PW and account info and may he will ask u for bill info , credit card info ..... just talk with them very gently and never every mention u have root or played in nook properties
for ur info it's happen me before , but dont panic .... i had succeed in register my acc ... also dont tell them why u prevent me register my nook , just pretend that u dont know anything ... just ur nook doesnt register
good luck

ok , let me explain to u
he had root his nook with touchnooter and got some problem then he do hard reset then , the whole system is corrupted then he dont know what he do , so i suggest him ur Alpha Touch formatter to remove his root , and he dont have a backup
also no deference between nst gl parsons and nst partitions ,just the file system , so when anyone use this image above just for partitioning cuz nook wont boot without the right partitioning and all u need beside this image the rom partitions files and file update that u download from BN site and just install and ur nook will boot up
hope u got what i mean
best regards

Help Required for 1.2

Hi guys,
Having a few fun and games here. Started off with a brand new boxed touchglow with 1.2 firmware and rooted using the method in [NTG][1.2]GlowNooter 1.12.25 @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675706
All was going well after the root until I was navigating some options in nook color tools and pressed on an option that said 'android.com' or something to that effect. Anyway, the ereader displayed 'auth error' and started resetting the device. The reset resulted in the device not being able to register.
I have now been able to revert the ereader to factory 1.1 standard but this doesnt even have the glowlight control and is for the US market. I am in the UK.
So is there anyway to get back to the orginial spec of 1.2 factory with the glowlight control please ? I will try and root it from that point again. Also, why do you think I had the error for authorisation in the first place, have I pressed something in nook color settings to reset the device without knowing what I was doing ?
many thanks for the help.
PS: Just wanted to say, lesson learnt, always backup!
ok , before do anything take backup
then if u unable to to register , u should talk to Barns
see this post
and plz dont mention u had rooted ur nook ... talk to them as u dont know what u do , u just do factory reset after error in reader
then when u register in log into system try this post to upgrade ur nook to 1.2.1 that work with glow white
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37750695&postcount=2
but there is something i wanna be honest , when they check ur device and found ur update version is lower , may suspect that u play in system and unable to register ur nook , so .... i think if u have agood info about how to deal with android staff i will tell u manual method to upgrade ur system manually , but MAKE sure U do BackUp with 1.9 GB ..... plz Take care
first u need to boot with noogie image from sd card and access all nook partitions and delete all files only in all partitions (dont format , just access to linux partitions and any files u see just right click and delete) except Rom partition , dont touch his files only .... then download update 1.2.1 or 1.1.5 (work with NST glow white) then rezipped the files (extract the contains and zipped again with extension *.ZIP) then prepare CWM sd card and put the zipped file on sd card that prepared to CWM and boot with CWM and apply update from this zipped files and when done successfully then ur nook officially update to 1.2.1 or 1.1.5 then apply try register and if u cant register talk with BN live support as i mentioned above and it will register successfully
if any misunderstand or something wanna be explained , u r welcome
good luck

touchnooter do not work on 1.2.1

Hello, I am sorry that I write here but no 10 posts to write in development section.
I see threats in the forum bought nook from asda. Yesterday tried to install touchnooter-2-1-31.zip. I prepared the sd card. Put in the nook and restart. It started and I waited the screen to become black, remove the card and restart.... Then it freeze on "Your NOOK is starting up..." I waited about 20 min, but nothing happend. Then I installed firm 1.2.1 UK from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41296148&postcount=2 and then again try to install touchnooter-2-1-31.zip and the result was the same froze. Then made a factory reset via NookManager and again try touchnooter 2 1 31. After that I tried older version of touchnooter-2-1-26 but absolutely the same.
All i need is to run some app that support PDF.I have scanned textbooks scanned as puctures. I want to read them in landscape and I need to zoom in may be with 2 fingers (multitouch)
PS I restore default settings and root it with Nook Manager. Then install Alkido and it support lanscape reading, but no zoom. I tried to install different kernels with no success.
Sorry for may English. I hope you understand me
Thank you

I'm sorry I don't have any help for you, but my Nook is freezing up in the same way because of the same thing. I tried to install TouchNooter while my Nook was on 1.2.1 and it is still frozen on the "Your NOOK is starting up..." (it's been hours). How did you factory reset using NookManager?
Your help would be greatly appreciated
Thank you
I found the problem.
1) If you have 1.2.1 use => Nook Manager
2) If you have 1.1.0 use => touchnooter-2-1-31.zip
I downgrade firm to 1.1.0 and use touchnooter, then flash new kernel for multitouch and fastmode. Now everything is OK

Ok, how did you use NookManager? Did you just "burn" the .img file onto the SD card and reboot the NOOK? I've done that and it doesn't recognize the NookManager SD card and just freezes on Your NOOK is starting up...
Use this program http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2084266&stc=1&d=1372709166 choose the *.img file and click write. Use CARD READER not NOOK!

Ok, yes that is how I put the .img file onto the SD card (through the card reader). Now I put the card in, and shut down the nook and restart it, and it will boot into the Nook Manager?
Thanks again
EDIT: I've fixed my problem. Again, thanks for your helpful replies.
