You cant, every NST is unique and using an image from another NST will cause trouble for both you and the NST it came from.
Thanks, nook is bricked but I can read the main partition, which .img I install?
Sorry for my english.

There's no img you can install.
You can try booting n2T-Recovery (v0.2) from a SD card and see if that helps. (Do not write that image to your NST!)
If not, send me a PM and I'll try to help you out
Something else you can try:
1) Flash noogie.img to an sd card.
2) Hook up your nook to a pc via usb once it has booted, and you should see all the partitions exported there.
3) In one of those partitions (recovery maybe? I'm struggling to remember), there's a factory.zip, which you can then install using the "Install from zip" feature of clockwork mod.
If you go this route, you'll have to reflash your sd card with clockwork mod after you've extracted the factory.zip using noogie.
Seems like kind of a pain, but I just recovered my device using this.
Remains in the screen ROOTED FOREVER and i can't do anything
I think, for michaelwill's method, you need to have linux running. I suggest you to try ros87's suggestion.

That is not a good idea, since each NookTouch has a unique information to register. If you are thinking of full restore from your friend's image (1.8GB image), it will overwrite your unique information. In that case, you and your friend's devices cannot register to BnN (or just one device). People says the info is stored in /rom. If you want to know more, you need to dig more. Otherwise try factory reset suggested by ros.

Correct!
Using a image from another NST is a very very bad idea!
There are a lot of stuff that's unique to your NST stored in /rom and in rombackup.zip on the Factory partition.
This includes:
Serial Number
Main Board Serial
Product ID
Manufacturing date
SHA hash of Private Key
Public Key in modulus form
WiFi Calibration file
Some unique binary file for your eInk screen
MAC Address
Battery Type
Duplicating the serial will make you or your friend unable to register with B&N
Duplicating / Faking the private/public key pair, will most likely make you unable to register with B&N (I'm currently testing this)
Duplicating a WiFi calibration can cause degraded WiFi performance
Duplicating that EPD vcom file (eInk screen).. well who knows
Duplicating the MAC will cause network troubles if used on the same network.
The wrong Battery Type (I've seen three different so far) can cause charging troubles, and will cause incorrect charge indication.
Don't go there!
NookRestore.img
Try writing NookRestore.img to an mSD card. (You can get a copy at my website: NootRoot)
Hard reset
I had issues rooting my NST and got stuck in a boot loop. After digging and digging through forums I finally discovered the secret to a hard reset. The instructions said to hold the power and the two bottom side buttons down together for over 20 seconds. That worked! My NST was back to when I pulled it out of the box. I then proceeded to re rooting. (my mistake was I did not upgrade the OS before rooting). My bad. Hope this helps someone recover from a stuck boot loop.
Good luck.

No it wasn't, Factory Reset doesn't remove root files or system apps installed by root tools, it only clears custom apps and settings.
While you might think it's back to stock, there are still leftover files and changes in /boot and /system

Hi, I've just found a way around this - it is possible to restore somebody else's .img file, provided you've backup up your rombackup.zip. Then after, using Noogie, you can overwrite rombackup.zip and the contents of it which are on a different partition. The only danger is that you would potentially overwrite battery type config file, as Nook has couple of them. I gave it a try on mine and it seems fine.

That is correct.
Problem is that most people who end up in a state where Factory Restore doesn't work has usually managed to overwrite their partition tables and part of the /rom partition.
And at this point it is too late to backup rombackup.zip as it's usually fragmented and cannot be recovered by ext2 file recovery tools.
So.. do a full backup before you do anything to your NST
I found if you restore with holding the two lower buttons it will remove all rooted files.

You did remove the uSD card after rooting, right? I've rooted using Touchnooter many times, and my boot screen still shows "Read Forever" (not rooted forever).
If that's not the problem, you might reset back to stock to try again. Be 100% sure you have a good backup before attempting this!

hello everybody
my nook is now registered
. i first followed the cwm minimal touch method.i burned the 2gb cwm img file on my sd card then copy beta two zip files . i inserted the card in nook and turned it on. surprisingly nothing happened. nook went on normally and no rooting done.i then switched to nook devs mr gabriel method. i downloaded 2.1.31 and burned it in card.after inserting i started on nook .the online instructions cam and then after 2 minutes the nook page started but my nook hanged.i somehow managed to switch off nook by pressing power and right side to side buttons. i again tried to do it but to no gain. i deregistered and again registered the device and then downloaded the touchnooter 1.6.24 image and then repeated the process. rooted forever screen comes but my nook again hangs . i have updated my nook to 1.1.2 but now even after deregistering and registering my nook is not downgrading to 1.0.0 firmware. i m again stuck .please guide what should i do .
thanks in advance
1st , write ur backup image , then do hard reset to ur nook and if ur software version is 1.1.0 upgrade to 1.1.2 and then try reroot with minimal touch nooter .... and follow the instructions very carefully
good luck

Guys, I had quite bad experience rooting my glowlight nook with touchnooter . Basically messed smth up so it couldn't start (just kept flashing). didn't save my back up. had to do unrooting with the software 1.1 that I guess was from nook without glowlight. Unrooting went fine, but the glowlight function is not working anymore. does anyone know how to solve this or could give me a link to download the proper software? thanks!

you should read the instructions better next time...
but making errors is human and you have a cool nick
I'll hopefully receive my glow in two weeks and I'll upload my backup then
You should make an effort to salvage your personalized data in /rom.
There is all the info in the p2 partition (/rom).
There is also a backup copy in the p3 partition (/factory) as rombackup.zip
You might do this with noogie or CWR and ADB.

Nook Glow Backup Image
I have a backup image of a NSTG that I am uploading right now ... and looks like it just finished. Here it is:
dl[dot]dropbox[dot]com/u/98836278/nook-glow-backup.img
When you have the image downloaded follow these instructions:
blog[dot]the-ebook-reader[dot]com/2012/05/02/how-to-backup-and-restore-nook-glow-and-nook-simple-touch/
As a new user I am not allowed to post outside links.
Downloading, thank you so much!!!
I'll post again with the results...
YES, YES, YES, YES !!!!!!
leadbella thank you a million times!!
I downloaded the image, and wrote it ot my nook.
By the end of the operation, which took some 9 minutes or so, the process ended abruptly:
error 27 writing to disk at sector 3825664
I opted to ignore it and reboot the nook, just to see what happened. The nook booted alright.
I then booted in CWR and replaced /rom with the contents of my own nook /rom which I had salvaged.
I then booted again, and performed all the process flawlessly.
So far I have registered the device again (no error here since /rom contains my sensitive data. Don't know if it would work if the data was from the original image, since MAC address, device SN and some other parameters would not match), loaded a couple of books and started reading again.
Just in time for another one week shift (leaving tomorrow)
Leadbella you saved my..... nook =)
Thank you, I owe you one.
No problem at all. Looks like it worked for srgarfi ... dukenookem please let me know when you have finished downloading the image. I need to use my dropbox for other things at some point, but I can keep it in there until you finish downloading the image. If the image link above no longer works and anyone needs a copy of this image feel free to send me a message and I will try to post it back up.
The image is from a just out of the box NSTG with no information and nothing added to it.

Thanks Leadbella. Downloaded the backup. Tried to follow the instructions, but the size of you file is almost 2 gb, too large for my microSD. Didn't expect the backup file to be that large. gonna go look for a larger sd card.

You should have saved your /rom files before ovewritting your nook with leadbella's image.
And I'm afraid there not anything you can do to recover your unique /rom files for your nook now.
Oh, I was concerned that Leadbella had posted an unedited backup...
so, what is going on?
first: if a post about partitions isn't comprehensible to you yet -- you probably shouldn't root your device until you do enough reading that you understand it a bit.
Putting leadbella's file onto an SD card probably won't work as a way to restore; when I recover from an image, I use a usb cable and write from my computer to my device.
Leadbella seems to have taken a complete backup image from the device - this will include the important /boot and /system partitions (which is good) but will also include the /rom partition, which unfortunately is unique to every device.
So, if you restore from that image and don't have access to your own /rom partition or recovery image, you're going to wind up attempting to register a second copy of Leadbella's Nook to your account. Fortunately for Leadbella, that won't work.
Now, what can you do to repair and get a corrected nook which can be registered?
I'm going to try an experiment - I'm going to start by backing my device up in its current state.
(I do this by making a Noogie disk
Booting from Noogie
Connecting to my computer
using the command dd if=/dev/sdX of=/dev/currentnookglow.img bs=1M
where X is the number of the device that pops up when I connect my NSTG to the USB port.)
That requires linux; if you don't have linux, you can install VMWare Player (Free) and then install linux in that.)
What I'm going to try doing:
- back my system up
- image with Bella's file
- delete the file /rom/devconf/MACAddress from the imaged device
- reboot the device
- see if I can now see the real, physical MAC address, either on the device (unlikely) or on my router (likelier)
If I can see the MAC address, recreate the file with the correct values for Mac and also create a correct file for serial number /rom/devconf/SerialNumber
Boot, and see if the device is registerable to my account.
BUT: right now, BN has blown out the Nook Touch register/deregister/register process. So I can't do the test until they fix that.
And if it does work, anyone trying it will need
- the noogie disk
- linux
For windows users, maybe, but I have not tried:
- a clockwork boot disk
- functioning ADB able to connect to your clockwork-booted device
(Some clockwork boots support ADB; some do not.)
as roustabout explains, you can write Leadbella's image to your nook (if in windows use win32diskimager or diskimage) and then take a look at the contents of /rom.
The fix the contents of macaddress and serialnumber, but only if you plan to use the nook with B&N services fix the rest of the necessary files.
If you just plan to use your nook as a standalone reader (yes, why not?) once registered you can just ignore the contents of /rom (at least until the next software update).

I'd really appreciate reup as well, since my backup is not working and I need to restore my NSTG.
before restoring from someone else's img, remember to salvage your own /rom partition since these files are unique to each device and you'll need them to register your nook prior to starting reading.
That said I can upload that IMG, but what's the best choice to do so? Any of the many filesharing services? Dropbox ? Google Drive?
require those images
Hi srgarfi, is it possible for you to please upload those images... i need them...
Please reupload the backup. I could really use it too.
the image I used, originally shared by LeadBella (thanks again!) is here:

Remember to save your /rom files before applying the backup or you won't be able to register your nook on B&N to start reading.
Hi all,
Nook simple touch. Version 1.1.2
I searched but could not find an answer to my issue.
Attempted to root nook using this:
http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch/Rooting
used touch nooter 2.1.31
made sd card. looked good
put sd card in, screen flashed, removed, rebooted.
unlocked screen, touched andriod.
skipped login to google services, enabled location services.
at this point it took me to what looked like the normal nook screen. i could not find the menu for this instruction:
"Click the Menu button (On top at the right, next to the time.)."
Rebooted device. Booted back normally, no signs of any modifications.
Turned off and got a snack.
Booted again. stuck on read forever screen.
Start searching around.
Attempt factory reset with method 2 and 3:
http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch_restore_to_stock
No luck.
Attempt to restore 1.1.0 image with clockwork:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360994
Image burns fine to SD, but when trying to boot into recovery only shows option to do factory reset, which continues to fail.
Does anyone have ideas on how I can fix this? It is still locked on the read forever screen, and factory resets do nothing.
Thank you,
Tajjat
do u have an backup from ur system??? if u did so boot with noogie and b urn ur backup image to ur nook and go back to original status , but if u didnt take so , listen to me careful
1st take back up now from ur nook ( boot with noogie and open win32diskimager and take backup by write path for file and name with extentsion and hit read from the sd card partition) and save ur back up and make sure , i repeat make sure ur backup atleast 1.9GB , if didnt so try again and take backup
2nd go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30430537&postcount=5 and download this image and save into ur hard drive
3rd try boot with any linux distribution or find program that can get access to nook partitions with ext3 type ( boot with noogie image) and then u will find partition named (rom and factory) , have acopy from this two partitions and put them in a separated files
4rd burn the image u have get downloaded with win32diskimager by select the sd partition in ur nook and choose file path then hit burn
5th boot with noogie and overwrite files in factory partition and rom partition from ur original nook (that u get copied and save in ur HDD)
6th then boot normally and it will boot as i expected with out any problem then try do factory reset to ur nook by this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28763125&postcount=5
and then take a backup after that (that will be the original backup for ur nook and keep it save becoz u will need it) and then try reroot and do right steps and will going fine with if u failed u can just write ur backup and everything will going fine again and u can do anything safely
and facory reset fail cuz root have change some files in almost partitions , so .... u must have the original OS for nook that can enable u do right hard rest for ur nook
hope i helped , any step u cant understand ask me and dont hurry up ..... there's many pple more expert than me ..... but my solution it will works 100%
good luck

6th then boot normally and it will boot as i expected with out any problem then try do factory reset to ur nook by this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28763125&postcount=5
and then take a backup after that (that will be the original backup for ur nook and keep it save becoz u will need it) and then try reroot and do right steps and will going fine with if u failed u can just write ur backup and everything will going fine again and u can do anything safely
and facory reset fail cuz root have change some files in almost partitions , so .... u must have the original OS for nook that can enable u do right hard rest for ur nook
hope i helped , any step u cant understand ask me and dont hurry up ..... there's many pple more expert than me ..... but my solution it will works 100%
good luck

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29345730&postcount=7
but if u dont talk to live support .... so i guess u must upgrade ur device from 1.1.0 to 1.1.2 by download this package and then unrar it and then zipped with same original state and then boot with CWR and install it in ur nook and then try to boot up and log in and register with the previous acc not an new one , ok???
and replay me if works or not
good luck
lol no
i didnt call or tlak to them or tell them anything. i wont either. it just locked up and gave that screen.
Tried to do the update with the 1.1.2, but i am afraid it failed. but i am not sure i understand what you mean when you say
"unrar it and then zipped with same original state and then boot with CWR"
can you explain what that means in more detail?
thank you!

or u can try BN method
To get the update manually, you can download the software update to your computer at any time and then copy it onto your NOOK Simple Touch. Simply follow the steps below.
Manual Download Instructions:
1. From your computer, click here for the software update file. Select Save and select Desktop as the location. Do NOT modify or change the downloaded file's name in any way. Do NOT open the *.ZIP file.
2. Tap Settings on your NOOK's Quick Nav Bar, then tap Device Info and make sure your NOOK battery charge is at 20% or more.
3. Connect your NOOK to your computer using the USB cable that came with your NOOK. A new, removable drive should show up in My Computer (Mac users will see the NOOK drive appear on the desktop or in devices). You should also see a "USB Mode" message on your NOOK screen.
4. From your computer, drag and drop the downloaded *.ZIP file onto the main directory of the NOOK drive. Do NOT open or unzip the file. You should not create a new folder on the NOOK drive or add the file to any other existing folder.
5. Eject or Safely Remove the NOOK drive after the file transfer is complete.
6. Your NOOK will automatically recognize the file after a few minutes when it goes to sleep mode, and proceed to install the updates.
7. Please do not turn off your NOOK during the installation process.
8. Once the installation is completed, your NOOK will automatically restart.
9. The software has been successfully updated; tap on the small "n" that appears in the status bar for additional information.
Your NOOK must remain turned on while the update is being installed. Once the software is installed, your NOOK will reboot itself back to the Home screen or the last screen you were on. To verify you have the latest update, tap Settings from the Quick Nav Bar, tap Device Info, then tap About Your NOOK and check to see that your software version is 1.1.2.

ok , now i think u must call BN live support and becareful when u talk to them , log in ur real name and ur last register acc on ur nook before got error and post ur nook serial that all required to talk to live support .... then do what i said in this post and if they asked u why u got this screen , tell them i found my screen got ghost effect so i did hard reset factory and when i try log in , i cant register my acc
and make sure u have the last register acc username&PW and account info and may he will ask u for bill info , credit card info ..... just talk with them very gently and never every mention u have root or played in nook properties
for ur info it's happen me before , but dont panic .... i had succeed in register my acc ... also dont tell them why u prevent me register my nook , just pretend that u dont know anything ... just ur nook doesnt register
good luck

ok , let me explain to u
he had root his nook with touchnooter and got some problem then he do hard reset then , the whole system is corrupted then he dont know what he do , so i suggest him ur Alpha Touch formatter to remove his root , and he dont have a backup
also no deference between nst gl parsons and nst partitions ,just the file system , so when anyone use this image above just for partitioning cuz nook wont boot without the right partitioning and all u need beside this image the rom partitions files and file update that u download from BN site and just install and ur nook will boot up
hope u got what i mean
best regards
Hi guys,
Having a few fun and games here. Started off with a brand new boxed touchglow with 1.2 firmware and rooted using the method in [NTG][1.2]GlowNooter 1.12.25 @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675706
All was going well after the root until I was navigating some options in nook color tools and pressed on an option that said 'android.com' or something to that effect. Anyway, the ereader displayed 'auth error' and started resetting the device. The reset resulted in the device not being able to register.
I have now been able to revert the ereader to factory 1.1 standard but this doesnt even have the glowlight control and is for the US market. I am in the UK.
So is there anyway to get back to the orginial spec of 1.2 factory with the glowlight control please ? I will try and root it from that point again. Also, why do you think I had the error for authorisation in the first place, have I pressed something in nook color settings to reset the device without knowing what I was doing ?
many thanks for the help.
PS: Just wanted to say, lesson learnt, always backup!
ok , before do anything take backup
then if u unable to to register , u should talk to Barns
see this post
and plz dont mention u had rooted ur nook ... talk to them as u dont know what u do , u just do factory reset after error in reader
then when u register in log into system try this post to upgrade ur nook to 1.2.1 that work with glow white
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37750695&postcount=2
but there is something i wanna be honest , when they check ur device and found ur update version is lower , may suspect that u play in system and unable to register ur nook , so .... i think if u have agood info about how to deal with android staff i will tell u manual method to upgrade ur system manually , but MAKE sure U do BackUp with 1.9 GB ..... plz Take care
first u need to boot with noogie image from sd card and access all nook partitions and delete all files only in all partitions (dont format , just access to linux partitions and any files u see just right click and delete) except Rom partition , dont touch his files only .... then download update 1.2.1 or 1.1.5 (work with NST glow white) then rezipped the files (extract the contains and zipped again with extension *.ZIP) then prepare CWM sd card and put the zipped file on sd card that prepared to CWM and boot with CWM and apply update from this zipped files and when done successfully then ur nook officially update to 1.2.1 or 1.1.5 then apply try register and if u cant register talk with BN live support as i mentioned above and it will register successfully
if any misunderstand or something wanna be explained , u r welcome
good luck
