Stock Camera for Custom Rom's - Galaxy S II General

Hey All,
Since rooting my SGS2 and installing ICS Roms I find the Camera App is total S**t !
I use the camera loads both still and video.
The stock SGS2 Camera app was awesome !!!!! But the ICS one is rubbish !
I have searched everywhere and stock camera app is not available for custom roms or as an apk file.
So I am trying to find a developer to port the SGS2 Stock Camera App so it will work on all custom roms so we can all use it.
Failing that port it to Root Box Rom by Bajee11 as that's the Rom I use.
If anyone is skilled enough then let me know and we can discuss it further. It has to be totally bug free and working though.
I want this to happen so no time wasters please.
Feel free to leave comments regarding your camera experience on ICS.
Also don't recommend any apps as I wasted money on them all.

I think it's impossible if you want it go back to stock rom
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app

Nah I don't think it would be imposable, just a lot of hard work either porting it from GB or starting from scratch. But either way something has to be done cause the ics camera is just crap!

I dont understand your topic. You're talking about a stock camera app. Flash any SAMSUNG based custom or stock ICS Rom and you will have a great camera... If you are using a CM or AOSP based ICS rom, like Rootbox, your camera might be worse. Because you have a Samsung device with Samsung camera, but a not samsung firmware... Or am I thinking wrong here, lolllzzz. Seems like common sense to me...

That's right it is bad but only the cm team can add features to it but no one will port the camera app its not so easy
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app

I am fully aware that it will be hard but if someone can port the other Samsung apps over then porting this will be possible. It will just take a little hard work and time for someone who has the knowledge about these kind of things (I don't)
Hopefully sooner or later a developer with the skill will answer the call
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

It may not be impossible, but you have to understand that the stock Samsung camera app requires the touchwiz framework and system libraries, these files are completely incompatible with the AOSP framework and libraries, also the libraries in question are closed source when distributed by Samsung so any attempt to port or write from scratch would be a complete shot in the dark and while I'm sure there are devas out there who agree with you, with all the issues Samsung creates for AOSP devs a mostly working camera is much further down the list than other projects.

This is something I've been looking for since I been using CM as well... 6 months now... really sucks to have such a great firmware with such a bad camera... more importantly the reduced camera settings is what makes matter worse...
For eg if you want to make a video with CM Cramera on lowest resolution, a 1 min video is like 40mb... can't even email something like that... while stock allowed 3gp and VGA resolution cams so you can take random small unimp videos to send... like on whatsapp with a 12mb limit you can only make like 5-10 second videos...

Get UCAM pro. Try it. Seriously great.

The question should be about other third party camera apps available on the play store. Is there any app that comes close to the stock samsung app in the terms discussed above?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2

As OP states no point in recommending any PS Apps. I have seriously tried them all and wasted loads of money on inferior camera apps.
There is nothing that comes close to Samsung camera application.
Also I have ucam and it's crap. How you can compare that app to the SGS2 Camera I don't know.
Which is a shame. (
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

I agree with op here...the camera of this phone is very good and that's y I hate when it goes to waste on custom ROMs...Samsung ROM is very very ugly but utilizes camera quality to the fullest and has WiFi direct and FM but aosp and aokp ROMs r beautiful but camera sucks and no WiFi direct..spirit FM is the alternative at least
When will the perfect ROM come
Hell I would even buy the ROM like any play store product if it has aosp with Samsung like cam and WiFi direct and FM

Why don't you use stock ROM with custom theme then?
I'm using Neat ROM and you can flash a custom theme over it (Jkay, vertemus, ...)
There's a lite version in case you don't want all stock Samsung apps.

Not what I am trying to achieve here.
Really want it so the camera application can be shared to all who want it.
Thanks for the idea though.

I'm using that too but it has limitations like the theme is close to aosp but not in full...plus some colours r not very good...some notifications r pure white etc such things...plus changing DPI which is possible in aosp and aokp disrupts the UI in Sammy ROM with aosp theme on it

Try using Ucam from play store it has most of the features of the stock camera and it also ugly like it

i miss my stock camera....,could we like port the stock camera...Ive read some threads with instructions to detouchwiz an stock app,but that's gonna be a pain in the [email protected]#$ then again its worth it i guess.

Me too. I love Root Box but stock camera is really good.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

So I just tried ucam and I must say I'm quite impressed by the picture quality... not as good as stock but definitely better than CM...
Problems with it tho are that it keeps trying to autofocus which I find a little annoying...
Secondly and more importantly... its not allowing to take videos in less than 620*480... which was the problem to begin with... I'm starting to think this is a main CM limitation rather than any application...

The stock camera has the advantage that Samsung can make calls directly to the hardware - fast and efficient. Because the stock camera only runs on Samsung devices.
When we talk about AOSP, now we are talking about generic Android. Google rewrote it for all devices with a general framework - it works on HTC. Now, the hardware cannot be directly addressed. Much more complicated programming - simpler in a way, but harder in others.
Then along comes AOKP. Those guys want to take Google out of the deal entirely, so they again rewrite everything and add another layer of abstraction. And when you think that NOBODY on the AOKP team owns an S2 and they don't even list it as a supported device. It is no surprise that the a large percentage of the features of the S2 are no longer available. For the life of me, I can't understand why putting up Superman wallpaper is better than having a decent camera, long battery life, FM radio, Bluetooth connectivity, etc.....

[REQ] Port Jv1 touchwiz dialer / contacts to CyanogenMod 7

I'm not sure how integrated the samsung versions of these files are, but in my opinion they are miles better than the modded AOSP versions in cm7.
Are these files highly integrated into the framework to where it would be impossible? If the port goes smoothly, the touchwiz dialer and contacts could be enjoyed by the whole cyanogen mod community.
This seems like it would defeat the open source nature of cm. Although nothing is impossible, unless samsung releases source for touchwiz (which they won't), I don't see this happening.
Better to design the missing features into the aosp project.
Sent from xda premium app on i9000m.
Yeah I understand your point, but I wouldn't expect it to be integrated into the main branch so closed source shouldn't matter much. So I'm assuming samsung's source for those parts is closed?
the smart dialer, and swipe to call/txt features are what I miss most if someone can make quality enhancements to aosp I'd be for that over ports any day.
I've tried just about every alternate dialer app there is (dialer one is the best), and they all fall drastically short compared to tw counterparts imho.

I would love to have a remake of the samsung touchwiz 3 dailer without the rest of touchwiz on cm7. Most Samsung apps are actually quite good regarding usability; also 2 bad they don't scale if you change dpi .
Dialer of CM7 is the reason for switching to CM7
I use "Frequently called list" which is very fast in CM7 and annoyingly choppy in TW dialer (doesn't matter of the lagfix)

Whats an AOSP Rom?

Guys what is a aosp rom.. Like whats special about it and hows it differ from a regular rom?
a rom built from the android opensource project (http://source.android.com/). it's what people call 'vanilla' or pure android.
how is it special? its not, really. it's just free of carrier bloat and manufacturer skins which some people prefer.
Does it offer any performance improvements? Like hardware acceleration for example. And also most roms on here are free of.manufactire bloat.
no improvements, it's the same os (for example, 2.2.1 aosp is the same 2.2.1 on the sgs4g, just without tw and carrier bloat). basically, manufacturers take the aosp code and then build their skins/software on top of them, so an aosp rom may run faster, but that's because it's running less code (it's not running sense, blur, tw, etc. on top of the android os), but that also depends on how the manufacturer code is integrated with the os.
Ive heard some people say it could be the opposite too. Some of the manufacturers ui enhances the specific hardware for each phone.

Like TouchWiz. It's completely built for the hardware in the Galaxy S, so it does speed up the Hummingbird, but nowhere near the optimizations that Gingerbread gives us.
Plus it gives some cool features. Like fonts and a better camera and music player.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Aosp (android open source project) has no shell (software by manufacturers or carrier) so what you get is the pure Android operating system.
Some like it some don't it is ok what is nice about it is if you are rooted (which you most likely are) you can add back just the apps you want so there is no extra bloat on the phone.
interesting!
okay i tried cm7 but i notice that it doesnt have hardware acceleration on the browser like simply honey 3.6 and or 2.2.1 roms like biwinning? So i guess the browser is not optimised for hummingbird on aosp???
It is but the browser on bi winning is touchwiz and Samsung had hardware acceleration on that
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Also TouchWiz has codecs installed for playing back 720p mkvs and xvid/divx files natively. It uses less battery cause its using the gpu in our phone instead of the cpu (uses more battery) which some apps on the Market do.

Well, I'm still not sure what the whole big deal is about this update for us.
It isn't more beautiful then a custom ROM. Even Sony told us that this isn't as fast as GB.
And their are still a lot of apps that isn't working correctly on 4.0.
I have it for only one reason. That is because I can't stand if someone with the same device have a newer software then me
Edit: I thought we should have the original unlock. But I have still the Sony one.....
It is no way smooth.. Everything works.. But isn't hardware acceleration supposed to increase the smoothness? I don't blame Sony. I blame Google for not fixing hardware acceleration right!

Try enabling gpu acceleration in developer settings?
Has anyone tried using apex launcher? It's probably way better than the stock launcher from what I've seen; like ICS but even better
Running official ics(rooted).its excellent. Very quick lag free compared to beta. I have frozen unneeded system apps and deleted bloatware. Very snappy

I love it.
I've been running the ICS beta since it was released and the performance of the final release blows it away on my Arc S. Getting it installed via Flashtool was a right PITA though - I thought my device was properly screwed at one point!
The launcher doesn't redraw like the beta did - I think Sony have made some memory tweaks in this area which is very welcome. I also like that they're shipping the official ICS Gallery app (and have renamed the old one 'Xperia Gallery') - the ICS Gallery app is so much faster than the Xperia one.
The ICS browser is in a different league to the GB one. I also love the Task Switcher, swipe notifications, music player controls, data usage monitor, new ICS calendar widget, GMail widget, etc. etc.
But Sony won't be able to please everyone. Some people were expecting the 2012 NXT UI even though Sony never promised it. These people will be disappointed. Personally I can't see what all the fuss is about - I'm sure someone will get the Xperia S music player working on ICS if that's what people want!
sooo smooth

Why would they integrate S apps into the Arc S ? What would be the point in giving this years flagship phones apps to last year's ? Then it removes some of the attraction of upgrading , Sony is a business out to make money not provide users with all the solutions they want

Can understand you very well.
Have been an aosp freak before (or I'm still, but not at this device), but I'm pretty pleased with touchwiz now. Some ctl and build.prop tweaks and all works fine so far.
Also touchwiz has at the current stage already some small, but useful features build in like the battery percent or the pinch to overview at the appdrawer. Not to forget about the missing mhl support at cm10 which is a dealbreaker for me.
Additional I must confess that I don't like the attitude of team hacksung, even while their work is still much appreciated and they are for sure great developers, it seems to me they aren't doing it anymore because they like to do it, more because they think they have to. For sure it's annoying when noobs clutter the development thread with ridiculous posts, but that you have to expect at a device like the gs3 and the argument that they are doing it for free, yes, it sure makes their work more valuable, but at the same time, they knew it when they started.
My opinion is they or at least every member of their team on his own should focus on one device, maybe that way it would be less load for each developer and at the same time more benefits for the community.
Sry that I cluttered your thread, this I wanted to get of from me sometime ago.

Coming from a galaxy s phone, I remember wanting touch wiz back. The problem with touch wiz as opposed to HTC sense, is you can't retain the framework with a custom Rom. I feel there is more to gain from having a custom Rom than having full blown touch wiz. Look around though, you can probably find a .zip of the launcher here, so you can run a very close emulation of touch wiz on the Rom if your choice. I had a Rom on my captivate called "remics" which had galaxy s3 stock theming throughout the operating system. Just look around, you'll find what you want here on xda

Yeah, the thing I love with touchwiz is the message app (stock android'd message app is dead boring), the camera app and a bunch of other stuff.
What kinda is a dealbreaker for me which I can't really decide about is exFAT support. Dumbing down my 64gb microSDXC card kinda feels like a stupid thing to do. exFAT is much faster and allows big chunks to be handled at once (like 16 exabyte chucks instead of 4GB ones)
The whole idea with their Nature UX kinda appeals to me. Soothing alarm and ring tones and beautiful wallpapers. Much better than previous touchwiz's.
i like TouchWiz , tried it on both S2 and S3, i also tried CM9/CM10 on both
I hate the TouchWiz launcher, changing the launcher to something like nova solved my problems.
lol because of this I just reverted back to touchwiz from ADW.

[Q] Touchwiz on Nexus 10?

Hey Guys
Was just wondering if it's possible to somehow implement touchwiz on the nexus 10?
Any insights appreciated
I'm gonna say no! The Google aosp Roms are about roughly between 120 to 250mb in size , as a touchwiz rom is at least on my galaxy note almost 600+mb, there's too much tw system files to port , it would be half broken and it would run like crap, someone would have to be very dedicated to spend days upon days working on something like this only to be a bad and slow ROM. Your best chance is to find a touchwiz ux launcher that works with cm10 Roms and install that.
Just my opinion

The Play Store has a TouchWiz theme, costs $2.00. I like it -- adds some nice subtle grays to the UI.
Can't be as bad as you say. They have touchwiz for the nexus 7, and that isn't even a Samsung product. It would just take some porting, and debugging/kernel modding to get it to work well.

Look at the amount of people involved in the development of that rom, it takes more than just some porting and debugging a kernel, I attempted to build a cm9 ROM for my galaxy note from source before official was out a while back and is no easy task, I know making touchwiz ROM work on a non tw device is not that simple. But that's just my opinion.
