I've been watching this device for a few days now. I've wanted a tablet but can't really rationalize the actual need for it.
I went to Fry's Electronics today in Anaheim, Ca. only to find that their 'STOCK' consisted on 5 opened box 32GB Transformers. No keyboards in stock (Odd) and no 16GBs in stock.
The fact that people are returning them left and right around here has me worried. Granted, the um...indiginous population isn't exactly up to speed with things like roads, traffic laws or lights, or VCRs but hey, someone is buying them bringing them back.
I'm going to wait before I buy one now. I can't seem to get a straight answer on whether or not Google Docs works, if you can edit within the app or the browser.
I assume no one uses these things for business or practical use. Just as toys.
I fought for 2 days to GIVE AWAY 600 bucks for the tablet and keyboard, and fate keeps kicking me down...for good reason I assume.
It's a waste of money, no purpose and no practical application in the business world?
Have I stirred anyone up..wake up!

Except that you did get an answer in your thread here.

Ahh I forgot about that thread.
Well, I edited my OP. Does it not concern anyone that these things are breaking left and right, sleep of death, touchscreens failing...
Unless you're a power user, (not an apple user since it requires basic knowledge of software and the freedom to do what you want to with your purchase of 500 bucks) you're up **** creek without a paddle.
It's almost like people are buying them just to return them...

No worries here..
I *did* have a keyboard doc that 'died' in the sense that the battery stopped charging. Sent it back to Amazon and then ordered a new one.
The TF tablet itself has been flawless. Asus has been doing a great job of keeping the firmware updated - and now has Android 3.1 slated to come out sometime today - so i'm not concerned about any "Day 1" sw issues such as SOD etc.
I haven't experienced any sw issues, but even if I had - it'd be hard to complain too much as quickly as Asus is jumping on these things.
The returns - especially because they're all 32GB - may just be people that placed multiple orders and now they need to return them. They may realize that all they need is 16GB and when their 16GB finally came in they returned the 32GB.
If Fry's is still selling them then I sure as hell would hope that they didn't have any defects.
Seems like the Transformer is not for you. I am very happy with mine. A little light bleed, but less than on the iPad or my Dell 24 inch monitors.
If you can't handle the current state of Honeycomb and apps then get an iPad2 and be happy.
FWIW, I got my transformer at Fry's, a 32 GB unit, with the factory seals intact. I was really surprised they had it in stock.
Light Bleed doesn't really concern me, as that is just "way it is" with phones/tablets.
As far as the current state of honeycomb, it's fine. Your comment is irrevelevent. I'm pro android.
Apple is complete and utter fail. i thought that was clear in my snide remark towards them.. (Apply fangirlz)
The issue with the transformer is the HARDWARE IS FAILING...not the OS. Android rocks.
Android apps rock.
Update today? You say?
Fry's worries me. I returned my first Transformer to Fry's because it was defective, one side of the LCD panel had separated from the glass, there was a inch wide gap the backlighting was visible through and you could push on the glass and see it bending. It was most clearly defective and I showed them the defect. The cashier even took the tablet to someone else and showed them.
Then she comes back, enters "Unwanted" in the computer, and puts a discounted price sticker on it, like they do with a return that was not defective.
So someone is going to get that defective unit.
I did get a second Transformer from Fry's and this one was fine. I'm sure there is a chance something could go wrong with this, but I think it has a one year warranty and I know I'll probably be buying some quad core super tablet a year from now anyway.
just buy a frickin ipad2. If you want a transformer, buy one. If you need to ask, its not for you.

This is how Fry's works.
I bet those five returned Transformers were trashed all to hell, boxed back up to sold again. Only giving a 30 dollar discount on them for being open boxed lol.
It's scary for sure. No one seems to have any new ones anywhere.
Out stock? returned or busted, back ordered.. Sounds like Asus has some work to do.

What he said. I decided to get the tranaformer the day it was announced, sure enough I've been extremely happy with both using it for school and play.

Go to a forum for any other device. Don't care which one--Apple, HP, Dell, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Motorola, Samsung, etc., etc.--and you'll find just as many reports of issues. This has been discussed ad nauseum on every forum: negative comments far outweigh positive comments. People ***** far more often than they praise.
If you went by what's reported in forums like this one, you'd never buy ANY product. Of course, some vendors do censor their forums pretty heavily, and so if you go to, say, the official Apple forum, you might not find as many complaints. But that's only because they've been deleted and the user very possibly blocked.
Some of the returns you are seeing could be people who have light bleed issues. I see a lot of threads of people complaining about light bleed. I have light bleed but it isn't debilitating enough for me to make the effort in returning it.(In fact, I don't notice it all unless I'm in a pitch dark room and my screen is on max brightness -- a situation that I'm never in) Though some people here have said that they have been through multiple returns hoping for that perfectly lit screen. Also, some people don't like the build quality (which isn't great) but it's not noticeable with a case.
My tablet has not broken down and I use it extensively. (bought it very close to release date) My Xoom lasted 3 days on light use before it started having screen issues.
You can wait for a better tablet but I use mine a lot for reading and media purposes. Obviously, it depends on the individual on how they will use their tablet. I actually get stuff done with mine (read text/pdf's/spreadsheets and watch lectures/webinars/recorded meetings). It's just like a more portable/convenient computer so if you just watch videos and surf the net at home then you're obviously not going to get stuff done on a tablet either. But, if you are work-oriented type of person then you can definitely find use in this. To say that it is worthless for people like me is a bit ridiculous.
That said, for an excel monkey like me, the current excel apps aren't good enough for me to use my TF over my thinkpad. But, it is still great for viewing and small editing purposes.

Don't take comments the wrong way. People are justtired of the "should I buy it" question and "I'm returning mine because...". You just happen to be the 1000th person with this topic so you got the same replies other before have gotten. My advise, go to the store and spend about an hour trying all the tablets: xoom, Acer, Playbook, and TF. Then make a decision. If you need opinions, best to look at old post then to ask to get an idea of what people think. At the end of the day, only your opinion matters more to you.

Haha... one of those open box at the Fry's in Anaheim is one I returned. There was moderate to severe light bleed almost all the way around the screen which was unacceptable to me. Just like someone else already said... the employee tagged it for resale as an opened item and said to me "there's nothing wrong with it". Yeah...
For what it's worth Asus consistently gets high marks on the reliability of it's laptops and are ranked even higher than Apple in that regard. Of course, thats not a tablet, but it shows that in the past Asus products have been reliable. When you're buying a $399 product that has barely any margin you can't expect a whole lot in the way of high priced materials, but that doesn't mean that it won't last. Since all of these units will be outdated in a year or two, and since most people on this forum seem to be early adapters who buy the next great item regularly, I can't see the longevity being a problem for most.
I never purchase anything over 50 bucks at Frys aka swep meet. All they do is re package it and put it back on the shelf.
Yeah when I was keeping an eyes out for stock at my local Fry's (3 stores total).
When one store had it as in stock I kinda waited (not knowing if it was a returned or not. Keep checking and when all 3 stores showed in stock I knew they probably got new shipments in. When I went to the one near me they had 4 new in stock.
well, i'm going on tf #3. 2 returned for defects. i really don't know why i'm even trying a third.
both had speaker balance issues. one had severe bleeding - way more than #1 did. #1 had the frame separation issue and slight bleeding, both of which weren't there on day 1.
hell, i was so sure i wasn't coming back to tf that i sold my dock and skin for $150.
so hopefully #3 will be the one i can finally settle with. i can deal with the speaker balance issue and just a bit of bleed, i'm sure the bleed is a technical limitation.
I've been thinking about it, and I use my phones with cases and screen protectors, any other thing that can go wrong is manufacturing and that's covered by regular warranty.
Also paying a $79 deductible if anything happens.. I'm just wondering if you guys would recommend me getting it.
Did you guys get it and why?
I did not buy it but probably would in hindsight after seeing the problems people are having with the soft chasis.

I got it because with the size of the phone I'm not going to use a case. The Nexus 6P feels smaller in my pocket naked than my Nexus 5 did with a Slim Armor case.
I didn't get it, and while I'm still a little on the fence, its ultimately a gamble against yourself and I don't think I'd get it if given the chance. If you're careful with your phone you'll likely end up not needing it. The way I see it, if you're careful with your phone and case/screen protector it then chances are at least good that you won't crack your screen....and if you do, it very well may be that it's far enough down the road that buying a new (or near new) one from a third party wouldn't be THAT much more than the $200 you would have already spent on the Nexus protect plan.
Additionally, yes manufacturing defects could appear in year 2, but if they're that glaring of an issue then year 1 is the more than likely timeframe in which they will pop up. Finally, if nothing else you could always just buy a squaretrade warranty or something similar. It's not THAT much different in price....
i got it bc $89 versus the $650 plus taxes plus overnight shiping my phone cost, it seemed a drop in the bucket. plus i work in construction, ive actually dropped a phone off a 12 ft ladder before, luckily it was in an otterbox defender atm.
Just as an FYI I asked a rep and they said that you can't retroactively buy it. It has to be with the purchase of a nexus. So if you have your phone already you couldn't get it even it you wanted. (I might call and fight this)
for people that missed out on the Nexus Protect, Squaretrade is pretty close. I called them up for a deal although I heard several Promo codes can be found, $89 for 2 years and $75 per dedcutible.

I think it is a excellent idea that you can only purchase at the point of purchase with the phone. This will cut down on insurance fraud drastically. Please understand, I am not saying this is you. All these years as an XDA member, I have seen numerous posts from members asking if they can add their carrier's insurance to their plan AFTER they broke their phone for obvious reasons.
All of the information of Nexus Protect was posted on the website during the Google presentation. While ordering the phone, a conscious decision had to be made to accept or decline Nexus Protect.
Maybe as a compromise, Nexus Protect could be available to customers up to 30 days after phone purchase, like SquareTrade? This way a customer could try the phone out and see if they will be keeping it, and not lost the Nexus Protect payment if they returned the phone.
Lol

30 days would be nice....Verizon lets you add insurance within 30 days of purchase (obviously you cant buy the N6P as a carrier phone though)
One could almost make an argument it should be like the extended warranty on a car: can be purchased anytime during the original factory warranty. Even if its higher priced after X amount of time after initial purchase, they should still allow people to buy it.
There is always the chance for fraud....see how easily one can get an RMA unit sometime in the next year for something that "accidentally" happened. Especially something like broken camera glass that is spontaneously occurring, or could occur if you dropped the unit then claimed it did it all by itself.
Just had Google support call me. My device is processing for my 1st RMA; my rep told me that there is no way to add Nexus protect unless I return the device and add Nexus protect to my original order.
That sucks
On the plus side, Google's support is awesome. I've never had such a good series of tech support calls. +1 to Google for that!

Frankly I think Google needs to offer a week extension for those who want to purchase Nexus protect now that they have the device and the general reviews are in. If they had told me that the phone was twice as likely as other devices to break them I would have preached it upfront, ...I made the mistake of assuming that there phone was built to these standards of other Nexus and Android manufacturers. This is my first Huawei phone so I can only assume that any quality defects are reflective of their brand in general and not just this device. This is also a negative score for the other and in most cases smaller manufacturers trying to break into the US market.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA Free mobile app
Yes this phone is the reason why Nexus protect was born.
For the past few days I've been doing the "table test" (putting the phone face down on a flat surface and seeing if it rocks), and up until tonight it sat flush with no wiggle at all. When I tried it tonight, there was a slight wiggle (4 different surfaces w/ case off). The phone is cased and I am super careful with it, and if this is happening after less than a week I can't imagine what would happen in the next 2 years. As hard as it was I made the decision to send it back (even with Nexus Protect already purchased). I would absolutely get Nexus Protect.
To the OP, I say get Nexus Protect or some kind of insurance. Better safe than sorry. I spent $650+ tax on a 126gb phone, usually when phones are newer the costs of replacement screens is insane. $200-400 just for a display assembly. So fixing it yourself is pricey if you break the screen. I replace phone screens for some phones, mostly iPhones because they are a little less complex, don't usually require any heat to remove. This is a phone I probably wouldn't attempt to repair myself and having someone repair it for you would probably be half the price of a new phone.

I got the Spigen rugged armor case for now and it's actually really nice. It hugs the phone and doesn't make it seem larger really. The case is a little slick, but not as slick as the phone.

I was in such a rush to order my 6P and get the device on the first wave that I didn't even think about clicking Nexus Protect. I got in touch with customer service and they would not let me add it after my order was in, even in the pre-order stage. Bummer but yes it would have been better if you could add it on as an after thought.
I really regret not having Nexus Protect, seems like the way to go on this.

Twice as likely? That's just trolling. The 6P may possibly be the best Nexus phone produced, and I owned all of them with the exception of the Nexus S. Look at the other XDA forums for past Nexus devices and then come back and make the same statement. I've seen more complaints (and still do) in the Moto Nexus 6 forums.

So the other Nexus phones bend within the first week from pocket wear and tear and have random cracking camera covers?
At this point it isn't if the phone breaks but when will it break. I am hoping to get 6 months of use before I start having durability problems.

Seeing all the issues, end with the deductible, I'd buy it in a jiffy if it were available here across the pond.
The fact that they'll express you a new phone like the next day makes it worth it for me. Being without a phone for even a day can be costly for me. And since it's google, I actually expect that they would perform as stated if not better.
I recently had to send out my 27 day old Nexus 6P 128GB Graphite. Something happened with the mobile radio and it no longer was able to pickup any sort of cellular signal. Huawei approved the device to be replaced and I just recently got it. It came in a basic brown box. The phone was wrapped in the nexus slip it comes in as if you were opening it up for the first time from the original box. It also had the serial label on the back of it. Question is, has anyone had any experience with Huawei device replacements before and did you receive a new device or refurb? I hate the idea of possibly owning a refurbished phone because my Nexus 6P died within a months use. The phone I have seems new but is there any actual way to check that?

If it's any consolation, I'm using a refurb Nexus 6P and as long as it's manufactured refurbished you should be just fine. I have no problems whatsoever in any aspects, I was reluctant too and after that I've flashed several roms, run stress tests, Battery tests, etc. Been using it for about 6 months now without any problem. No complaints at all.

I hear ya. I mean I cant say I have ever had issues with refurbs but I just feel that paying as much as I did for the phone and having it break less than a month into its life just to potentially receive a used device, kind of scratches me the wrong way. But on the flip side I've never seen a refurb come exactly how it would be if bought brand new. So just was curious if anyone else ever dealt with Huawei.

24 defective phones for every 1 million made is decent odds to me. I never use cheap charging cables or blocks. I buy everything samsung and I've never had problems with any phone I've had. I think im gonna keep my phone because the pre order was a pain in the ass and I dont wanna go through something again where i cant get a new batch note 7
I'm on the fence too I'm holding on to it I'll see how replacements start going in the coming weeks.
Holding on to mine until they actually have a unit to swap, I don't want an s7 edge even if it's temporary.

I'm thinking about holding mine too. I've charged my phone plenty of times and had no issue... Does that mean I'm fine?? Lol
Hanging on to mine till they get the new ones in. If I had wanted an S7 that's what i would have bought in the first place.
I read that we have the same batteries as the ones that exploded, but different processors. Supposedly the snapdragon will sgut the phone down before it gets too hot where the others didn't
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N930A using Tapatalk
I'll swap mine once the new batch arrives but I like this phone to much to give it back. My wife works for at&t and she told me all day people have been bringing there notes in.
I just went ahead and returned my Note 7 earlier, went back to my Nexus 6p didn't want to take any chances. Didn't have any issues with AT&T with full return, didn't really want to bother with an S7 or any other exchange since honestly it wouldn't be the same as the Note plus I still had my paid for 6p. Kinda missed my 6p anyways, may come back to the Note whenever they get issues resolved.
It takes me a full day even with Smart Switch to get my phone set up. I may not return it at all. Of the reported cases of fried phones all were being charged at the time. So worst thing that can happen is my phone fries itself on its wireless charging stand. I've been using the 25W charger and the phone doesn't even get warm. I doubt there will be statute of limitations on exchanges so I'll wait until I scratch it or have some reason to get a new one down the road. I know it's a game of chance but no one on XDA which has a worldwide audience has reported a personal phone frying incident. So the odds might be better than some of the speculative threads here would make them seem.
I'm wondering about exchanging for the v20 when it comes out, if the time line lines up.

What did you miss about the 6P? Have always been curious about pure Android.
ive got the 930FD , Im holding mine.
Replacing it tuesday. AT&T in Chicago will have note 7s without the issue. That said I will replace it and with the replacement, I'll sell it. I think while the note 7 feels great in hand, I am going to really get a pixel xl and the iphone 7 (piano black)
I'll be selling it with the galaxy gear s2 as a bundle so we will see
Took the sim card out of the Note7 and put it into the Nexus 6P for now. Will hold on to the Note7 until replacements ship into the store.
Im holding on to mine for now till the replacements are in stores. Ive been charging mine overnight and so far i dont see any overheating or anything.

Well for one, the relative ease of rooting. Unlocked bootloader, no bloatware etc. Not having to worry about finicky bluetooth, just basically works as it should even after rooting. Sure root is there for the Note 7 but just a tad bit tedious and was starting to not be worth it for me. Sure it's no touch wiz UX or w/e they're calling it now and no S pen but I've been okay without it before, some may think pure android is "boring" but that's what customization is for.

How are they getting the new ones in when samsung said it will be weeks
Cracked out N7
Well I read that the problem is An overheating of the battery cell occurred when the anode-to-cathode came into contact which is a very rare manufacturing process error, so people reported this happening after 2 weeks of using the note 7, also some sites say a way of knowing if your note 7 could explode is looking at the manufacturing site, its behind the phone and can barely be seen, if it says Korea or Vietnam, then its on risk, like mine that says Korea, so the truth is that it can happen at any point from the first day to later on, so they have to be replaced, am charging mine after I wake up, in an hour or so its at 100 percent, then it doesn't need charging till the next morning, but if it takes too long for the replacements to arrive, I think I might get the s7 until then, I have three kids, wouldn't want anyone getting hurt by this.

Looks like we might be entitled to a bit of money. The article says we don't have to do anything and will be contacted via mail. I'm not sure how "they" know all of our addresses though. It would be nice if there was a list to join for emailed updates and information. Please leave a comment if you have any further knowledge!
Article TLDR:
WHO?
"According to the filing, the case covers 'all individuals in the United States who purchased a Google Pixel or Pixel XL smartphone, other than for resale, between October 4, 2016 and the present.'" with the exception of "people directly connected to Google or the trial. That includes anyone working at Google, a Google subsidiary, or Google-affiliated company. It also rules out any judges assigned to the case, along with their immediate family."
WHEN?
"For now, there’s not much you need to do. Just by buying a Pixel phone you’re included in the class action lawsuit. Once a trial is approved you’ll probably receive a notice in the mail telling you how to actively join the case. It will also explain how to file a claim once the lawsuit is settled— assuming there’s some money to be had."
WHY?
Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones suffer from what the company called a “hairline crack in the solder connection on the audio codec.” In some cases, this made it extremely difficult to use the microphone, making phone calls and voice commands impossible.
The company says only 1% of Pixel phones included the defect, but the lawsuit notes that within just a few weeks of the device’s launch people were already reporting issues with the microphone. Instead of offering refunds, Google replaced some defective smartphones with new units that had the exact same issue. Even worse, the company never stopped selling the Pixel and Pixel XL despite mounting evidence that something was wrong.
I feel like I got ripped off by Google, and I'm not buying another, Lots of issues with this phone, and if you take a photo near the sun you get BIG round sun flairs.

That's also every phone and camera that isnt a dedicated camera that costs more than $1000. Do you feel ripped off with a dedicated camera that does this too? And I wouldnt say there were too many problems...some, sure, but enough to deter from buying another Google phone?
The price is more of a deterrent to buying another phone if you ask me.
Yeah I 2nd what @godfish said I bought an EOS Rebel and the damn thing won't make phone calls to save my life. I mean what the hell. But as far as my pixel XL goes, ever since I rooted and unlocked the bootloader and flashed a new rom everyday I seem to have apks crashing, substratum themes that don't mesh well with some apps. Loss of root from twrp. Its all Google's fault. So I was thinking of getting the pixel XL 2. How's it's camera? Does it work under water ?
I don't really get why there's got to be a class action lawsuit their exchange policy is awesome and easy to deal with. Had a problem with mine and it only took about a two-minute phone call before they sent me another one. People are always trying to get a dollar. I won't be joining the class action deal.

My wife had 4 pixels before we demanded a different phone (a galaxy s7) from Verizon. Insane.

Yes that's no good. I had the first gen pixels big and small, they had no issues, maybe I got lucky. Then I got the pixel xl2, it had touch screen issue and they replaced it.
My PXL is all good. Did get a P2 and P2XL and both were fault: P2 had speaker issues and the P2XL had the worst blueshift imaginable. Returned both for full refund including all shipping costs,no hassles and no questions.
Not sure this is worth a class-action lawsuit, but then again, I'm not in America. Good luck if you get something (as long as that doesn't then affect the rest of us... Y'know, higher prices, for example)

I refused to RMA because what I get back would not be bootloader unlockable. I've basically been clearing my cache in TWRP every day since November because of the random reboot issue. Many have exchanged phones multiple times and still receive a refurbished device that does the same thing. Without an unlocked bootloader and TWRP, I'd be suffering the same fate as many who just have to watch their phone reboot repeatedly until it dies.

I snorted out loud. I almost spit water all over my bed.
If you read Google's own discussion groups, this is a huge problem and there is clearly a manufacturing defect with the motherboard. This problem only affects the XL, it seems.
I was running stock and mine died suddenly at the ripe old age of 16 months. I was lucky compared to many others!
I expect a $100 off brand phone to last longer than 16 months, but I don't expect an off brand company to do anything for me when it dies. Spending nearly $900 on what's marketed as the best piece of premium hardware is different though, but Google could only refer me to an aftermarket shop that wants to charge me $350 for a new motherboard... There's no way to just but the replacement part.
Ignoring the fact that I feel like the right thing for Google to do is extend coverage for manufacturing defects like this, wouldn't the $350 repair simply be replacing my old defective hardware with new defective hardware? If Google won't admit to a problem, it's pretty much impossible for them to assure us that the problem has been addressed and that we should have faith in the replacement parts.
I've never filed a warranty claim in my life and can't stand it when people RMA their devices at the 12 month mark just to get a newer phone or to fix a screen that got cracked when they threw the phone into the wall.
Some of you can laugh if you want, but it will become very much not funny in a few more weeks/months when your device inevitably dies from the same issue.
Unfortunately, you are not the only customer.

I just wrapped up a six month battle to replace a Nexus 6P that had device protection. I was offered a replacement during that famous "2 minute phone call" (6 month after purchase). When I saw I needed to authorize about a GRAND for the replacement I offered to send the phone and wait it out while using my Nexus 5X. I was told quite quickly (despite being told I would have the defective phone replaced with a Pixel XL) "WE WILL SEND YOU WHAT YOU SEND US." me: but you guys just told me you are aware it has a battery issue: " WE WILL SEND YOU WHAT YOU SEND US". 6 months later -and involving the Better Business Bureau: 2 days after emailing BBB -I had the Pixel XL. After asking them for 6 months to honor original solution.
I know a good product when I see one; or at least I respect innovation.
I use their phones for the tower/switch software/set-up.
But, I highly advise to use their system; while not purchasing through them.
If it's in there best interest to resolve the situation quickly and effectively; they will.
If your idea of fair is not inline with them; you are bounced infinitely between dept. Until the BBB jumps in.
Y'all been warned.
Hopefully, they are working on this.
THX. no hard feelings. honestly my 100% experience...
oh well
