MTP WinXP/7 - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everybody quick question... I think
I noticed with the Nexus 7 if I have USB Debugging turned on and plug it into my WinXP machine, the MTP driver goes missing. However, when I turn off USB Debugging then I can browse my files as normal.
On Windows 7 this is a non-issue. It works with USB Debugging on
My GNEX doesn't have this issue on either machine.
Is this simply an ASUS driver problem with Win XP?

[Q] Won't connect to PC?

I'm having problems getting the phone to mount 100% of the time in Mass Storage mode. Occasionally it'll connect, but especially it seems when it's plugged in with the EVO it just won't get a connection. It charges fine, it shows up as a drive, but it doesn't give me access to any files or anything.
I'm using the USB drivers from the Samsung webpage specifically for the Epic 4G.

Try that. For some reason I couldn't mount my phone as a drive until I turned off USB debugging. Settings -> applications -> development (i believe)
I have windows 7 64bit and it works every single time now. I've transferred tons of stuff. I never even formatted my card.
RE
I couldn't get it to connect (driver installed incorrectly etc) when connecting the phone to the front port of my PC, but it worked immediately when I plugged it into the rear of the desktop.

I can contest to this disable usb debugging.
USB debugging has been disabled, used multiple ports, etc. and still having problems. Reinstalled drivers, manually added drivers, nothing is biting. I've also tried disabling driver signing, doing everything I can with that off and still nothing. Windows 7 Ult 64-bit in case you're curious.
Just got my Epic and had the same problem. Oddly enough though it worked with other USB ports on my computer, just not the front/top ports.
I've seen this problem before, I just cant remember where though.
Hmm, i have a Mac and the memory card is not mounting at all. had to take out microSD card and use USB card reader. Had no problems with other HTC Android phones connecting to my Mac (Hero, Evo).
Install USB Driver for the Epic.

Epic USb drivers? I doubt thats needed. Maybe a updated USB driver for your computers USB ports.
Try a different usb cable I had the same issues changed the cable and no more link issues at all.
This is a rather common problem it seems like. I fixed it by using a powered USB hub. Also try using a different port, certain ports seem to not have the power needed even if the phone looks connected.

[Q] USB Connectivity issue

Hi
Got a new galaxy tab and cannot get any joy out of usb connecvitiy.
On both Windows and Linux when I connect the device to a usb port I get no response whatsoever from the host operating system.
I have tried changing the usb settings under Settings|Wireless and network|USB Settings
I've also tried it with both USB Debugging enabled and disabled.
Nothing whatsoever... as if I did not even plug the device into the host OS.
Anyone else experiencing this issue?
Thanks
I had the same problemon one of my computers running windows 2003 but it worked fine on another with windows 7
Thanks for the reply - I get the same result on Windows XP, Windows 7 32bit and Linux
Took the device back today - seems USB is faulty.... waiting for replacement.

[Q] Focus not recognized by windows 7 64bit

Has anyone been able to/or know how to the focus recognized by windows 7 64 bit, its not even showing up in my device manager.
I have no problems syncing wirelessly or w/ USB cable on my home laptop (Ultimate 64-bit) and my work laptop (Enterprise 64-bit).
Michael.
I didn't have any issues using it with Windows 7 64-bit either (Ultimate and Home Premium).
Sorry, I know it's no help, but I have a laptop and PC both running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with no troubles, including wifi sync with the PC.
no problems here. Are you connecting directly to PC or to a USB hub. I had problems before with USB hub.
I think it might be my cable after looking more into it. Thanks
FWIW, I am using the USB cable that came with my Nokia N900 (also using the Nokia N900 charger).
Michael.
I am having the same problem.
Windows Phone 7 doesn't use Windows Mobile Device Manager. It uses Zune. You won't get a WP7 phone to show up in WMDM on any computer.
Zune will still have to communicate to the phone via device driver.
I just connected mine via USB cable and looked in Device Manager under Portable Devices and the SAMSUNG SGH-i917 is there.
Michael.
Did you try installing Zune manually? I believe that's what I did first.

I'm running 64 bit Windows 7
Do you have your phone set to be a tethered modem? I run win7 64-bit, and the samsung driver fails to install every time.. If you're just looking to see your phone, open up diag and hit *#7284# (if I remember correctly, turn it back to zune-sync and plug your phone in.. Zune will autostart and it'll recognize the phone.
Probably no dice on tethering with it though, unless samsung releases a new driver, or possibly a different installation method.
Focus and Win7 64
I had the same problem with my focus. The only thing that ultimately worked for me was to plug it into a different USB Port. It was recognized as a new device and I haven't had the problem since.
If you're talking about tethering, try this to install the drivers:

I've never had any problems just connecting to Zune in the normal sync mode.

Why does my Nexus only show up on my PC once out of like every 5 times I plug it in?

I have the correct drivers on my PC and its not a big deal because I'm only plugging it in to charge it..but when the little 'windows explorer' pops up..about once out of every 5 or 10 times do I actually see the phone and can browse directories and copy stuff.
the rest of the time the explorer window is 'blank' when it pops up.
like i said..it doesnt really bother me because i haven't had a reason to need it showing up reliably on my desktop..just curious if this has happened to anyone else.
FYI, the phone screen always says "connected as a media device" regardless of whether its showing up on my Win 7 PC desktop or not.
Disable USB Debugging in the Developer Options when you want to browse the phone. With it enabled I sometimes cannot browse either on my PC.

Yep, disabling it makes MTP work every time, with it enabled it gets iffy.
doesnt happen to me and i have mtp and usb debugging on.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514942 use these drivers instead, they work flawlessly.

I think my "issue" is on my XP laptop. On Win7 desktop (using the same drivers from that link) I have no problems with mtp and usb debugging on. Good catch!
cool tip!!! i'll install those drivers.
PS do they work with ALL android devices? my kids have 2 tmobile 'mytouch' android phones i just bought off ebay and the drivers i've used are pretty picky as well.
I also had an issue with USB Debugging on with no functioning MTP on Windows XP. I solved it and documented it with a post over in the N7 forums (reading the posts clued me in):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35667806&postcount=23
Windows 7 has native support for MTP so it most likely will never see these issues -- although there are a few exceptions.

Windows 10 connection

Hi all
Got my shiny new nexus 6p, connected it to my computer to transfer files etc and i get diddly squat! (nothing happens).
A quick google search suggests enabling developer settings, installing drivers etc but again nothing works.
PTP I think works but I want MTP does not. Using Airdroid at the moment but tranfering things take an age.
Can anyone help/advise?
The default USB connection type is "Charging". Have you tried to drop down notification shade and select file transfer?

Yes there are two MTP is the one that SHOULD work for transferring files, but that does nothing. PTP actually shows as a drive/disc on my laptop but it does not allow transferring files.
Seriously i cant be the only one with this issue, unless im doing something very stupid.

Grab the latest USB driver?
I'm just throwing stuff out there hoping it helps.

Thanks it was kinda a driver issue.
got it sorted through here:

Needed to change the driver from PTP to MTP and voila it worked.

Awesome!

It is nightmare to recognise it to Windows 10 14393 LTSB version.
Tried everything MTP not showing as Nexus 6P, adb and fastboot are working but no file transfer.
Quite odd. I have not had any issues connection my 6p to windows 10. I am on version 1607 build 14393.321. Plugged up and worked. I did read though that some have had the wrong driver installed if they had a Nexus 5...
You need to enable developer mode on the phone and allow usb debugging. Really frustrating but worked after applying these settings on the phone.
