OTG supported by Defy? - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I saw some videos on Youtube referring to how to make your own OTG usb. Will Defy support it coz I various tasks to do if its possible ;/
S3nt fr0m my D3fy/w1u1 GB st4BL3

The answer is no.
AFAIK for OTG to work, we need some changes in kernel and that is not possible for us.

CM-11

CM-11 supports USB OTG for Defy.
Enjoy

Yep, OTG is working in defies.. @Quarx made it

Yes it works, I actually used it and works fine.
Using Quarx's 20.01.14 rom, here:

CM11-20140307, OTG - gives current withount mounting
Hi!
First of all - I would like to thank all you people creating this ROMs, fantastic work!
I encountered a problem that I failed to resolve with my google search skills.
[ I am running cm-11-20140307-NIGHTLY-mb526.zip (2.6.32.9 Kernel), BaNkS's 2-27_GApps_Minimal_4.4.2_signed.zip on Defy MB525 (Bayer module). OTG cable made by Akyga company.]
I can't use OTG service. I see no reaction in Catlog when plugging cable combined with three different card readers (+3 different memory cards). Two of them however light their LEDs up. Third one does not. Huawei E173-U2 modem lights up if it has no SIM in it. Sansa Clip+ player charges as well when plugged to Defy. Externally powered 3,5" HDD is not recognized by Defy as well. All of those devices I tried to connect "live" and with rebooting of the phone. No result.
Is this because all of those devices may be incompatible with MB525? Or maybe there is something I have to do to activate it, beside just plugging in the OTG cable? Going to settings>storage is now pointless as "mount sd card" is inactive (grey).
I am a bit confused, if it even should work on Kernel 2.6.32.9, because in the opening post of Quarx 4.4 topic ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47185185&postcount=1 ) there is OTG mentioned under Kernel 3.0.8, download link leads to catalog with zips with kernel 2.6.32.9 and the "List of known issues" is all about the old Kernel as well. Maybe I am trying to do something impossible without 3.x Kernel?...
And by the way - is there a way to get into the bootloader, like it was before upgrading recovery to suit KitKat? There was an option to overclock CPU, that did not need to use RAM, like SetVsel does.
Thanks for attention!

I think there is a way
Hey
look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50882400&postcount=3149
It helped me to install bootmenu in CM11 KITKAT 4.4.2 defy
and look at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1447010 for more idea on good overclocking

Thanks! I will consider procedure from the first link (warning mentioned there made me rethink my needs). The second one is one of the first things I've read before even trying OC. Worth mentioning anyway.
BTW, I still did not succeed with mounting anything via OTG. Tried about dozen mounting helper apps (not much sense, but much more hope). With no result.

[Q] Boot from external usb?

Will it be possible to boot from external USB flash or hdd?
Seems xoom already support bootloader unlocking - details here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967065&page=2
Will it be possible to do the same with a500
Bump this...I'm thinking about getting one.

Just thinking, that now when we can flash custom roms. Would it be possible to code grub like bootmanager?
I know its not the same layout.but...the nook color is able to boot into different Roms ect. While holding the n while booting.

Im no expert but the a500 doesn't have an unlocked bootloader so until someone can crack it (if that's even possible) or Acer unlocks it we're sol in this dept. At least that's what I've garnered from reading these forums

You can flash custom kernel with custom ramdisk instead of recovery and force the external root device in the command line.. Although that kinda sucks. I'm booting my test system from external micro sd card now (will release sources a bit later, need to push a lot of traffic) but I want to port uboot though.

Will be great if you can reveal bit more details. I'm looking into booting ubuntu or other distro without sacrificing the existing android system.
I'm still not sure do we have 2 kernels one in the main boot and one for recovery or we have one kernel that gets different rootfs - either normal boot or recovery
Will be happy if someone can clarify a bit more onto this.

My kernel tree is here - https://github.com/astarasikov/iconia-gnu-kernel
My plan is to port iconia to chromium tree and possibly integrate into mainline tree and get rid of proprietary stuff (i.e., make camera work via v4l2)
Right now, the framebuffer, mmc card and usb host are working and I'm struggling to make usb client and touchscreen to work with mainline drivers
And yes - we have two kernels, 'normal' and recovery. So we can ditch recovery and put our custom kernel there. Sure that's not good - ideally we should port uboot and repartition internal storage to install linux there but we need to get basic hardware working first

Great thinking. Thank you for your hard work.
So is it not possible to install second boot loader in the recovery area like u-boot or lilo, that will give us ability to boot further from external hdd or usb flash or else.
In other words, we have locked boot loader but can it be tricked like if it is loading a recovery kernel and in turn it loads other bootloader on top?
Ok, got something to brag about. The kernel in git has now usb client (cdc ethernet) and touchscreen (sic!) working. GNU/Linux is coming to our place

CWM Customizations?

I have a couple of questions regarding cwm ( 3.2.0.1 )
1.Is it possible to enable usb-host mode in cwm , for navigating with a usb keyboard?
2.Is it possible to change the screen orientation? I need it to be upside-down from what it is atm..
I'm planning to learn how to compile and code stuff soon , but if you can just tell me if it's even possible - or pointers on how to get it done it would be a great value to me
*tried google , couldn't get much info on those "issues"
Thanks
Item 1, it could be (has been) done using dalingrin OC kernel
Item 2, i don't know but i think it's possible
Thanks for the quick response
it doesn't work for me using latest nightly ( 134 ) , I'm using a Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse set which works in cm7 ( receiver connected via a female-female usb adapter )
I guess we need to enable something to make it work? or does it work for you without any modifications?
AFAIK, the update will overwrite the kernel, so I guess you have to re-install the OC kernel. I also do believe you have to install dalingrin's NookColorTweak apps also, then from it, you can enable USB Host.
I don't think you understood my question
I already have nightly 134 with the oc kernel and nookcolor tweak app and usb host is enabled and working fine with the keyboard
I'm not talking about the rom manager app
I'm talking about the recovery itself , where you update nightly's , install kernels etc..
It's running before the os so no app can help in this
I'm guessing its in the cwm itself , I know they enabled usb host for mounting external dok
I'm sure there is a way to remap the keys to the keyboard , just need to find it
Question 2 is off the map
I thought it was only cwm that can't accept the 270 degrees orientation , but apparently it happens in some games and more so I'll use my NC in the "normal" landscape orientation
Now , what about the usb-host? anyone have a clue what needs to be done to achieve this?

TEST Acer_AV041_A500_0.009.00_WW_GEN1

I was looking for a thread where to post this but thought I might start a new one since there seems to be no thread where to report bugs and such of the leaked acer ics.
So this post is dedicated for bugs report for those who use the leak posted by vache last week in order to help dev to make a fully functionnal ROM out of it.
So far here's what I've noticed since I've flsshed the cwm version on my a501:
- Sreamed video from french app "canal touch" is sluggish
- Movie Studio does not work
- Drive Mount does not auotmount external SD (probably a root problem)
- process.android.media keeps crashing
- Music on external SD is not seen by stock music app unless it is copied through USB
- Files on the externel SD are not seen by PC when connected via USB if they are not copied using the tablet USB
Hi I have installed on packard bell Acer_AV041_A500_0.009.00_WW_GEN1 g100, after some days it seems there are a few bugs, some slight frezee Video What do you switch settings to the main screen with physical key, good GPS, south extarnal well, mount USB no problem with key, excellent graphics and smooth .... judgment much more than an alpha

I don't have a problem with SD card (running it "stock" with patched BL).

How To: Enable USB Mass Storage on AOSP ICS roms

Hi All,
This is all information from other threads, but I thought i'd share here too as I and an SGS2 user.
Currently, I am running CM9 and now have USB mass storage working fine How?
1. Flash Siyah Kernal for ICS
2. Install this app: USB Mass Storage for ICS
When you open the app, give it root access. Then, you'll have access to USB Mass storage. Thanks to gokhanmoral's awesome kernel & Bexton's awesome app
If it's not working after those two steps, you may be required to also flash THIS init script, made flashable by desean, originally generated by VAXXi
EDIT: New app version here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24084600&postcount=113 that enabled USB mass storage on both drives internal and external Updated first link.

Are you on CM9+Siyah b7? If so, did you have to flash the script to get it to work?

Hey - no, didn't need the init script, it just worked on CM9 and Siyah. I've included it as it's also great work and may help others not running CM9 (maybe issues on other AOSP builds?)
But as in OP, it only works currently on internal storage fr me, not external. Trying to find out why now. In meantime, I use Android Commander to transfer to external.
And you're using CM9 0326? That's very strange...Maybe I should reflash everything.
Edit: Hmm...It works now after I installed a different version of this app. Thanks for the help!
Yup, all good now, found then other app version myself here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24084600&postcount=113 updated first post
app worked fine at first but after a reboot it crashed swiftkey x couldn't load language packs...after removing the app and rebooting again swiftkey worked again
any clue what caused that?

I can't download/write a file larger than 2Gb (HELP pls)

Hi folks,
I think few people have already experienced that but I literraly can't download single file over 2Gb which is really annoying.
Ofc I've already performed a full wipe, cleaned everything, reinstall OS with stock firmware. I also tried to switch from official Oxygen OS to Open beta but nothing works.
The only thing I didn't tried is to format storage into f2fs (i'm actually in ext4)
But 1- I don't think it'll work because I didn't have any problem in ext4
2 - I can't install any OS after it's formated (I get error 7) even if I know how I could get rid of this error.
Moreover, I can't use any OTG stuff and I think it's linked cuz this issue appeared at the same time (or my OTG cable is maybe dead lol)
If anyone has an idea it'd be really great.
I'm facing this issue for weeks now and because it's very uncommon, no one try to help me...
Download using Android Download Manager and you are good to go
Hey. Finally I found a solution.
I have no issue with chrome 68 and the new download manager.
However, I don't understand why I was facing this problem with old chrome versions.
And unfortunately my OTG cable still not work

Oh well, I never faced this issue with chrome before but it's fixed anyway.
Yes my phone is rooted. I'm using OOS Open Beta 15, but even when I was on official OOS, it didnt work... I also tried to wipe + reinstall the firmware, but even with OOS Nougat it didnt work...
I wonder if it's an encryption issue
it's google. they've crippled android more each version out of contempt for power users. Anyone paying attention can easily see that their actions are not aligned with their supposed philosophy they like to brag on. If they spent half as much time on quality control as they do on platform control, then they might have something besides borked ux. Even their stock rom is useless

Wow I didn't notice that. To be honnest, I try to get rid of those google ****s. I deleted chrome because of my issue and installed Kiwi browser.
However, as far as I see, no one is facing this OTG issue...
I'll maybe give up and just use my computer for the transfers between my usb stick and my phone
