Hi all,
I am 16 years old, and therefore I am not allowed to have a visa or credit card in Australia, so I only have an efpos card. But I can't seem to be able to buy apps from the play store with it, is the anyway I can do that? As I have to resort to finding free apk's for any payed app I want, as I can't pay for it on play store.
Cheers
Corey

Do you mean an Eftpos card, as in any card that can access the EFTPOS network? Kids can get a Mastercard debit card in Oz from age 16. Without knowing what kind of card you mean & what restrictions it may have I don't know sorry. Hopefully someone else will.
Hi, sorry yes I mean eftpos, the auto currect on my phone lol.
And isn't a debit card the same thing as the card I have?
Cheers

I don't know what card you have. Different banks have different accounts for under 18's & with that different cards with different restrictions. And yes what you have would be a debit card, but presumably one with restrictions because of your age. I access the UK Google Play Shop with a debit card but I'm an adult so have no restrictions on it. And I can use it in all the same places that a credit card is accepted.
Without knowing what account you have I can't know. But I'd say it looks doubtful. Unless you can get your parents to get one of those prepaid cards & load it with some money for you. I don't know if that would work.
Australia Post do Load&Go

I think Google make you pay in the same name that is on the card. So you might have to have your Google Wallet name in the name of one of your parents.
edit: lol oops, I was thinking of Steam. Google doesn't use paypal.
Debit is likely not the same as your eftpos access card. However, if you look at the requirements for applying for a debit card on CWB's site, you'll see you only need to be 16, likely the same for other banks. You can sign up for a debit card online, and they mail it to you in a few days.

Yes, if you link your account to a Paypal account. Transfer some balance to your Paypal and spend away.

You can't link your Google Wallet to your Paypal account. Paypal & Google are at war. They started a lawsuit against Google last year.

I have a card through ANZ and it works. Does it have a Visa or MasterCard logo? I remember there were some EFTPOS cards that worked more like ATM cards than credit cards. I had one through Commonwealth bank but that was back in the late 90s. I thought they had all been changed to work more like credit cards. Might be a restriction on your account.
Just go buy a Visa or MC debit card and put some money on it. That might be easier.
Not sure about your bank, but you can get a Debit Mastercard with Commonwealth Bank at 16 and over (I got one a while ago). Before that I was stuck with the Commonwealth Keycard.
If you don't want to do that then have a look at some of the prepaid options like the Load&Go Reloadable Visa Prepaid cards from AusPost. You can load them by cash or EFTPOS.
Hi guys i bought the device activated it and got the 25$ and free magazones etc.
Now i read there is additional 10$ available in the wallet app. go i opened the app and activated wallet.
But i dint have a credit card in my wallet account. I didnt get the 10$ credit . Is there a way i can get it now.??
Activate a google prepaid card and it should give u the $10...however u can only use that money for Wallet purchases, not for apps and u can't transfer it to ur own bank account or anything

Hello,
2 questions:
1) Will I be able to get my $25 bonus after I unlock/root my Nexus 7 (it is new and not yet attached to any google account)?
2) Will I be able to get my $25 bonus if the credit card linked to Google Wallet is not a US card, but issued in Europe?
Thanks.

As for your second question,
I've got a card from Europe too and I got my $25 play credit, you just have to put an US adress when you add your card.
I'm selling stuff on eBay currently, and I should have enough money to buy the Nexus 4. All my sales are going to PayPal though.
To my knowledge, Google and PayPal don't play nicely together. eBay for instance (I guess being with PayPal) bans the use of Google Wallet on their site. Play Store doesn't allow payment with PayPal.
I could just send the funds from PayPal to my bank account, but it seems my bank doesn't want to offer me a debit card (I'll have to look back into this though) Google Wallet also doesn't seem to be able to just take funds from Bank Accounts either. I had an idea of requesting a PayPal Debit Card and just using that on Google Wallet, but I'm not entirely sure if I'll be approved (waiting to hear back from them on this, but if I'm not approved, I'd rather have a backup plan).
Any suggestions as to what I can do?
So you bank didn't give you a debit card with Visa logo on it. Maybe I missed it.

I'll try checking with them tomorrow about it but I thought before I recall them not offering me a card for some reason.

If that's the case, why on earth would you stay with them? Go with a local credit union, or Charles Schwab (no fees, free check card, lets you cash checks through a smartphone app).
If you get a Paypal debit card, you can set it up to use your bank account as a back-up funding source if your Paypal account has no balance.
It's a debit card, not credit, so I don't see why you wouldn't be approved. The only thing is that if you're planning to purchase the N4 on opening day, the card may not arrive by then.
So it seems my bank won't give me a card because of my credit score or something along those lines. I'll have to look more into this a bit later though.
Still didn't hear anything from PayPal about their debit card thing either.

Banks actually do a credit check nowadays just to let you open a current account. Another reason for needing a credit score with a debit card is because if Visa pre-authorises a transaction even though you don't have funds in your account, your bank has to honour the payment. This can and does does happen, if you withdraw all your money from your account at a cash machine then go and use your debit card straight away the Visa database still lags thinking you still the balance before you took your money out and authorises the payment. And guess what? The bank still debits your account, put your account in arrears, minus money in your account means lending money to you, which means they're taking bigger risks because of your crappy credit rating. Banks can't risk that can they? better safe than sorry.

I learn something new every day :good:
Goto Walmart and get a Walmart money card. Its a preloaded debit card that you can use with direct deposit. Basically a checking account with out a bank. Also has free bill pay and most frayed of a traditional checking.

I was actually just at Walmart earlier and saw one of these cards; are they usable on Play Store? I thought I heard something about virtual credit cards or something
Edit: Someone also brought up the Play Store Gift cards, which I also saw at Walmart. Would anything stop me from just buying $300+ worth of gift cards, and redeeming them all on my account?
Bump
Edit: Just checked my email, looks like I was approved for a PayPal Debit Card

Charleroi Federal Savings Bank
Banks will deny you a debit card if you are on a high risk checking account. Like if you write to many bad checks or have over drawn you're account too many times.
Credit scores may come in to play as well if you are young and have very little banking history. Debit cards are just as risky as credit cards for both the Banks and the consumer. They both allow you to spend more than what is available to you (credit limit or account balance, both can be exceeded).

Ah, I see. I'm guessing my credit score might be pretty bad due to whatever a relative might of done with my personal info or something, but idk (I personally never actually signed up for a credit card); probably something I should figure out real soon...
As for the PayPal debit card, is there any reports of it arriving sooner then 7-10 days?

I believe it is because of competition. eBay banned Google Wallet, PayPal won't let you deposit funds to Google Wallet, Google won't let you pay with a PayPal account directly :/
Hi,
I'm 18, and I'm looking to purchase the Nexus 4, but I do not have a credit card. I don't want to ask my parents for their credit card so I was wondering whether or not I can purchase the phone using the Play Store gift cards?
-Thanks
Hey why don't you use a prepaid visa or MasterCard. If you wondering how a prepaid credit card work and how to get one you can pm me and I will tell you what you need to do. Take care!!!

lol go buy $350 worth of Google credit!! Never heard of anyone doing that before!
From the google play gift card site:
"*Google Play gift cards cannot be redeemed for Android app subscriptions, magazine subscriptions, or hardware and accessory purchases. Refer to the Google Play Gift Card Terms and Conditions for more details. Content subject to availability by country."
You could go the prepaid visa or master-card route.
Better advice is for you to go to a bank or credit union and open a savings and a checking account. Get a debit card off your checking account and you can buy the phone with that. Look into a secured credit card as a possible way to build credit, at 18 you most likely have no credit history.
^ Yeah, Checkings and Savings accounts can be setup quickly. I opened up an account at Wells Fargo in 15-20 minutes with an employee and having a debit card is really nice for Amazon, Paypal, Google Play, and other online services. I'm 19.
Just give your parents cash and use their card. Or open a bank account.

Buy a green dot card at walmart. Most banks also offer something similar, a prepaid debit card to be used as a universal gift card. You could give your parents the money and have them buy the card from their bank for you. Or just set up a bank account, they're damn near necessary now days.

Are you guys sure it'll work with a prepaid credit card? Aren't they considered a "virtual credit card" as well?

A Virtual Credit Card (VCC) cannot be used with your purchase in the device store. Also, at this time, the country of your credit card must match the the country to which you're shipping.

Thanks for the replies, I'll stop by Wells Fargo or CitiBank today.
Didn't see that bit. I'm going to guess that no they are not considered virtual credit cards. One of my banks does the virtual credit card, the way it works is if your about to make a purchase from a merchant you don't trust you can generate a one time use credit card number that only allows the amount you specify. They typically expire in 24hrs.
