VOTE - Carphone warehouse exchange - Galaxy S III General

I traded in my SGS2 at the carphone warehouse (UK) - got £200.10 for it, which is pretty good.
After I had handed over the phone and signed the forms etc, they told me the money would be credited back to my card within 10-14 days after it had been checked over.
This set alarm bells ringing as I had rooted and installed several different custom roms. I didnt use triangle away or nor a usb jig. I did however flash a standard samsung stock rom before handing back and factory reset etc.
Do you think I will get my money??? Cast your votes!

It depends on CPW's terms, if they are just going to recycle it possibly not, if they will sell it on as a refurbished phone, they might drop the price a little, as I say it depends on their trade in terms.

they'll check it over for cosmetic defects. As long as it isn't in too rough a shape and works fine, they will give you the full price.
i received £230 a while back even when I had several scratches on the screen and dents on the case with custom ROM

Did you do it instore or online? i work there if its in store it is normally within a week

Did it instore. It did have a few scratches on screen and a few scuffs on top. But in full working condition.

i trade stuff in all the time yeh it will be sooner rather than later

Money landed in my account today. £200.10 is not bad considering I never had a case on it nor a screen protector and the front screen was quite badly scratched!
Relieved not doing triangle away didnt cost me! Happy days.

Samsungs Guaranty/Warranty

Afternoon all,
Last week i had to put in my phone for repair, fine cracks had appeared on the LED under the gorrila glass, thus making my screen blank and none responsive.
I wasnt holding my breath as i thought that it would come back with this answer, they came back saying this (this is though phones4u as that is who i purchased the phone with):
Unfortunately your phone appears to be Out of Warranty so we have raised the following estimate.
So i gave them a call to see how it could be out of warranty and they said even though it is inside the 12months as it is a cracked screen it isnt covered by the wrranty, this is classed as accidental damage.
Now this phone has never been dropped, it was got last april and is pretty much in perfect condition and have no idea how the cracks on the LED appered, after explaining all this i was told the same, it isnt covered as there is no way to prove it wasnt dropped or had extreme pressure put on it.
They gave me a quote of £71.99 to repair the phone and get it back to me, which i am paying. If i had cracked the screen by fault of my own i would think this a good price as i have seen replacement screens on ebay, ect for alot more.
I feel a little hard done by as i know nothing has happened to break my phone, i was just wondering how others feel. Do you think with the size and popularity of Samsung phones they should be offering something like apple loyalty replacement or something similar? or has anyone had better luck going though a different vendor?
Should have contacted Samsung directly instead of going through one of the rip off merchants.

I was told by the man in phones4u that it was being sent to Samsung but it seems to have gone to their repair people. :/
Do you think going to sammy direct would have gotten me a different answer or cheaper repair?

They probably would have given it a more close inspection, as to signs of possible drops or accidents.
That sucks. I'll be sure and steer clear of phones4u in the future, thanks for the heads up.

Dunno but I find it easier to deal directly with the manufacturer than the rip off merchants. When my tab had some dust under the screen within a few weeks of purchase PC World refused to exchange it and said I may need to pay for the repair. Told them to where to stick it and called Samsung directly and they sent a prepaid jiffy bag for the device and a form to fill and send it back to them. They repaired it free of charge and I got it back within a week of sending it off.
Thanks for the input Intratech, think this is a case of lesson learnt for any future problems (hoping there isnt any).
You are in that very difficult position accidental damage by user who of course claims not .Versus phone broke by itself
You could claim against the seller but after six months its up to you to provide the proof that its a manufacturing fault .
As said Samsung may well have been the best route as they will have a higher margin and better trained staff than retail outlets .

Although I prefer to use the S2 as my daily phone, I also own an iPhone 4.
One thing I really love about Apple is their warranty. Pretty much no questions asked. I guarantee if I went in with a cracked LCD (not screen) they would have replaced it on the spot.
Although I love Sammy (S1 & S2) their warranty stinks. Also, no official invoice means no warranty.

Thanks for the replies folks.
I also love what apple do for the customers warranty wise, being able to look up the age of a model instore is amazing.
Do you think that sammy should introduce something like this due to how much they are competing with apple now?
How hard would it be to incorporate this service in to the generic phone shops (CPW,Phones4u,ect).
The cracks maybe related to temperature differentiation? From very hot ambiance to very cold one? It is good to know this kind of stuff.

Yes and charge the premium that Apple charge for the phone .

i work in mobile sales, and i see this allllll the time, now i do believe you when you say that it was probably a manufacturing fault with the screen, but you have to keep in mind that probably 97% of the time with customers, it is the their own fault, and about 85% of those people will downright lie about it, ive had a customer come into my store shouting and screaming that it wasnt her fault the screen was cracked, that it was made badly and that she always was super careful about it, until her 5/6 year old son says 'but wait mommy, i saw you throw it up against the wall when you were shouting...'
fact is, people lie about it, all the time, same with water damage! 'sorry sir but its water damaged, theres not alot i can do about it'
'it hasnt been anywhere near water! it must be the humidity, or condensation, but it most defiantly hasnt gotten wet'
'but look sir... that looks alot like milk to me'
'ah...'
im sure if people were honest all the time, your phone would have been fixed no problem, but no, they arnt :/
sorry about the rant!

This was something that had crossed my mind, before it happened i was at my mums all warm lovely, then i went out and it was freezing was out for about 30min before i noticed what had happened.
I saw that article about how the s2 can work at low low temps the other day, but i dont think it said anything about the effect of a quick change in temps.

Just using o2.co.uk as an example (i know there are a lot of different prices out there i just used a popular place), our s2 is £449.99 on p&g and the ip4s is £499.99.
The £50 difference isn't much more of a premium for how long most people keep there phones for.

I scored mine for 275GBP including an extra battery, and a silicone case. 2 months old (used) not a scratch, delivered to my door (through pure coincidence). Sammobile.com claims that factory warranty runs until Sept 2013.
I suppose im lucky in the sense in that when i purchased my phone on eBay it came with a 2 year warranty and (touch wood) ive had no trouble with it at all and i have it 8 months now and it's running fine, ive heard some bad reports about Phones4U too, their sales assistants are seriously pushy as well the minute you step into one of their shops they are all over you like a rash firing questions at you desperate to make a sale, any wonder i rarely ever go there anymore when im in the UK.

Mine was free on £40 p/m contract, i got it the day after it was released tho it has been in a silicone case from day one. I don't doubt that shopping around will find you our phone cheaper. i just think the majority of people would use a place like o2 or other retail chains.

I just want to move away from the whole tied to a contract thing, im signed up for 24 months and i regret that now. I will probably aim to do something like in your sig and go on gif gaf if they are still as good in 15months time.

Yeah my warranty card states that the device has a warranty of 24months starting from date of purchase. So Sept 2013 for me also lol
I saw warranty on SamMobile and it was of 1 year and 10 months from the date of purchase but the Samsung guy says he will only give it till 1 year from the date of purchase
P.S yesterday I got my screen replaced and my proximity sensor is not working
Such an idiot guy,I have to go again to service center tomorrow because today is Sunday and its closed

Warranty may be dependant upon area of sales .
Usual in the UK with Samsung mobiles is that Samsung offer a limited warranty for twenty four months .
That is outside of the sellers responsibility for the phone which is usually a twelve month warranty .

asurion replacement

Just got my replacement and I was so excited they sent me a brand new one in box with all the accessories. I know it's because it's so new but I thought I would share my excitement and see if others have had the same experience. One question comes to mind tho they charge us $600 for the phone and I'm sure asurion gets a deal on them but for a 150 deductible do you think they losing money on these or do they make that much money off this phone

What happened to your old phone if you dont mind me asking?
They definitely don't lose money.. I did the same with my GS2 last year and it's definitely sweet. Especially since you get to keep the old battery and back cover. Spare batteries are essential with any smartphone in my opinion. Even though I don't have an extra yet.. Lol.

I dropped it and the screen landed on a rock and cracked
Insurance companies are definitely not losing money. They make their money on those who purchase insurance and never make a claim.
This phone, brand new, almost certainly costs them more than $150 dollars. In this specific case, yes, they are "losing" money fulfilling your order.
They are an insurance company, they make there money back from all the other people who buy insurance and don't break their phones.
Ok making it back off of others makes sense
I got my replacement on Tuesday and was also excited to see it come with everything especially since they claimed they were only shipping the phone with no accs. Now I have extra stuff including the nice pebble blue back cover

It's like any insurance, you get it and a week later your car gets stolen, then they lose. But if you've been paying for insurance for 25 years with no claims, then they win. and for most people, they pay home, car, phone insurance for years and decades with no claims.
Not to rain on your parade but I don't think that's a new handset. The reason I say that is because I've had two GS3's both brand new in box from the store and they never came packaged like that. The phone never came in a plastic cover/bag. The new ones I've had both came in the black holder with just a peel off screen cover on the front and back. Just looks like the one you got now was repackaged. My $0.02 anyways.
If I'm not mistaken, all Asurion phones are refurbs. At least both of my Evo 3d's were.

I'm pretty sure the phones need to be marked as refurbs if they are. I've received phones from Asurian that, besides not having any markings indicating they are refurbs, looked pretty new.

How to tell if you have a new or "refurb"

Glad to read your post. I read the instructions very carefully and nowhere did it say that they wanted the battery and back cover from the damaged phone returned. Still, I was unsure about keeping those. I also got my replacement on Tuesday after hurrying Asurion along in approving my claim. Through T-Mobile my deductible was $130.00 dollars, the only ouch factor. I have the new one in a bumper case with Invisishield installed, but I'm still nervous about dropping it again, lol.

My Story & First Impressions

Hi there,
Probably hundreds of other threads similar to this one, however I would like to share my experience with the HTC One and also how I actually got my hands on one today!!! (Sunday 24th March)
Let's start with how I actually got my phone, which is the advice I'd like to give. Me and my mother decided to take a trip to Manchester as I hadn't bought her a mothers day present. We got to Manchester, and started having a look about when I found myself in the Phones4U shop in the Arndale Centre. (ground floor as there are multiple stores, near the Apple & Vodafone Store) I just happened to see the One, and I picked it up and immediately fell in love with it! I asked the sales guy if they had any in and he just replied 'Yes'. After speaking to his manager he said I could buy it Pay as You Go for £489! I was shocked as it is £529 from ALL retailers online and also, it isn't even shipping yet! Anyway, I ended up buying the phone and my Mum paid for her own present don't worry, I'll pay her when I trade my iPhone 5 in! SEE THE ATTACHMENT
Anyway, as far as first impressions go, my iPhone 5 now feels FAT after using the HTC One. The only issue that I have had with it, is mine is getting incredibly warm. However right now it's on charge, and now is the only time I have noticed the heat so I'm putting it down to the first charge. It's been a while since I was on Android, so I'm glad to be back in the game.
Any advice on screen protects would be greatly appreciated, heard the actual HTC ones are a little expensive for what they are, anyway thanks!

Also, how can they do a front and back for iPhone? The back of iPhone 5 is textured so not sure how they will stick!

Thanks for the replies. In regards to the Rhino Shield on the iPhone that someone mentioned, it would indeed stick to the back. The only thing that put me off buying my HTC One was the fact that I'd spent £25 at Carphone Warehouse UK getting a Zagg Screen Protector and having it fitted on both sides.

Yeah call them up when you get a chance and they will refund you £30 - I haven't done this personally as I didn't buy from JL but people on this forum got refunds when JL dropped price from £450 to £400 and @bu11d0g is saying he has got price match refund from the initial £480 price.
Thank you. I received the tablet under complex circumstances anyway. I actually didn't know I'd receive it since I got a cancellation email and was waiting for the refund from paypal (still waiting) to buy one again. I was initially going to wait, but then I got an email saying my tablet was being dispatched and effectively got charged for this tablet and right now my bank account looks like I've bought the tablet twice. I figured since it was too late to cancel and it would be arriving anyway I decided to keep it. I kind of regret it now lol but I do hope I'll be able to price match with them. Thank you for bringing this to my attention by the way!
White is all sold out online, but call your local store and you might be lucky. They will put it aside for you. My local JL had 3 white only left.

Thanks for this info, otherwise I wouldnt have bothered walking into the store where they had loads in stock so bought a white one ... however the assistant first brought out a box with one seal broken (can't say for sure if she knew or not but I will give benefit of the doubt) but when I told her about it she seemed a tad shocked and got me another straightaway. Don't get why samsung don't just have that plastic film like on ipads or other devices as it would be plainly visable if it had been opened/tampered with. Oh well i have mine now so all is well :good:.

Bought mine online from them a couple of weeks ago and picked up in store. Emailed them earlier, reply this evening saying they are crediting my card with the £30 refund... great!

I got this tab from John lewis so if I were to return it or if it broke within the 2 year warranty with the Knox counter tripped, would they check it or would they just repair/replace it no questions asked. Thanks in advance

Update:
So I called up my local John Lewis to check the store stock, they tell me they have the Note 10.1 2014 in stock so she says its reserved for you now so come into store and pick it up within 3 days. Me being all excited I head out for JL straight away. I get there, find an assistant...she pops into the back and walks out with a brown wooded box so I get even more excited - on closer inspection its a Tab 3 10.1, I tell her its the wrong one, she apologieses and pops back into the stock room and returns empty handed once again apologising that there is no Note 10.1 left. So that was a wasted journey and go home sad and empty handed.
So try 2...I call up on wednesday and once again I'm told they have stock and its on hold - I repeat many times "Note 2014" and even mension I've already had a wasted trip and she goes " I have personally placed it on the shelf myself", I was catching a domestic flight home and as soon as I land I make the way to the shop and the exact same thing happens, obviously I was a tad annoyed by this stage, I didnt really mind the first time as mistakes happen but twice!
The assistant understood my annoyance and in the end he said whenevever it comes back into stock I will get a £30 discount...so in total the tablet will cost £340...I left tabletless once again but atleast I will get a good deal whenever I do buy it. Patience is a virtue haha.

[UK Readers] Anyone know what Samsung charges for front glass replacement?

The touch screen is fine. If I go in to the Samsung store near me, what are they likely to charge me? Anyone been through the process with Samsung? Thanks.
i think they charge around £300. don't tell me you've dropped it

£300!? That's like 50% of the overall price! Ridiculous.
And yeah...dropped it First time I've ever dropped a phone and smashed a screen. Absolutely smashed all over. It only fell from a foot or two, landed face down on hard flooring.
I do however have insurance, but I'm getting some bad vibes from the insurance company and revisiting reviews on them they're receiving an increasing number of negative reviews. When I took it out they had positive reviews. I'll reserve judgement though until I've gone through the process. They're registered with the FCA so if it goes sour I'll go down the ombudsman route and ask my CC company to recover the premium I paid. I'm hoping it doesn't come to that though.
I was asking about Samsung's price just out of curiosity really.
Whom you insured with
Go to a Carphone Warehouse store. Their Geek Squad thing is an official repair provider and they charge £170 ish. I had to get mine fixed a couple of months ago and thats what I did. Still expensive tho!

Thanks for that mate. Worth knowing in case insurance falls through.
Won't help you now but for future reference, Gadget Cover are good. My circle of friends all use them. They always have discount codes available.
At the time we got yearly coverage of the S7 Edge for £65 for the year including loss, excess charge of £50. Used them previously to fix my OnePlus One, my Dads OnePlus One and my old Galaxy S3 (When it was still the hottest thing around lol).

Apparently there is a Nationwide short supply on replacement screens for most Samsung models. So the insurers, which I find weird, have asked me to obtain a quote, send it to them, if they approve it get the work done and they will send me a cheque as reimbursement (less the excess).
Went to the Samsung Experience store in Milton Keynes which is run by Carphone Warehouse. Quote for repair was £190.
Cracked my screen about 3 months ago when jogging home from the gym (1 mile). No idea how it happened as it was in a arm strap and I didn't bump into anything. Anyway went to the Samsung service centre in Surrey Quays, London. £200 to replace and picked it up the day after. Never smashed a phone screen before that. This phone screen concerns me in that I think it is not as strong as other phones.
Actually what i have heard that the whole digitizer (full screen and glass) has to be changed , glass can't be replaced separately.
Just thought I'd drop in and update on my experience. So after chasing my claim for awhile, eventually the insurance company sent me a cheque for £140 (to cover the £190 price for repair less my £50 excess). Not 100% satisfied with the service I've received from the insurance company as the policy I purchased was a premium policy which meant I should have been a day or two without my phone at the most, not several weeks.
Anyway, long story short, I got it repaired at the Samsung Experience Store in Central Milton Keynes (which is operated by The Carphone Warehouse incidentally). They replaced the whole front section which includes the silver frame - which was an extra bonus really as I'd scuffed that in one corner.
Although the price is pretty steep at £190 I can't fault the service. I had the phone back within a week and they did a damn good job on it. As they're authorised repair center the warranty and waterproof rating remain in tact.

odd if an insurer cannot repair within 48 hours they should usually send a replacement or pay you cash to buy a new one. Have nationwide phone insurance and they are good.

To be honest, although they came through in the end, I'm not convinced they're a reliable insurance company. I was lured in by some good reviews however more recently their reviews have nose dived. And I quickly realised what was going on. Basically when you purchase the policy, about a day later you're sent a review link for the reviews website they quote all over their website. Naturally, your only experience with the company at that point is purchasing the policy, which is a smooth and painless process. So they quickly rack up decent reviews by asking for a review early doors. The reviewers who waited to review until they needed to claim, have not so good things to say about them in recent months.
My next insurance policy will be a "new for old" policy. That will be the selling point I look for as a lot of the cheaper policies are refurbished for old or equivalent for old.
Looks like I also will be looking into a screen change. I'm undecided which direction to go yet. Best bit is I didn't drop mine I pressed the power button and a small arc crack formed around the button never had anything like this before can't say I'm impressed really.
Original poster whom you with name and shame...
Edit
Seen it.
Gadget cover get a good write up quite cheap also
