How do I transfer files to/from my Nexus 7? When I connect it to Windows it wants a driver, when I connect it to Ubuntu, it doesn't see it.
Any advice anyone? Thanks for any help you can offer!
Did you install a driver?
Did you try this one?

I'm running Kubuntu and had the same problem with my Galaxy Nexus. I fixed it by downloading the android SDK, and then using adb to push and pull files off of the device via the terminal. I plan on doing the same when I get my Nexus 7. It is a pain, since there is no GUI, but I've gotten used to it. Have you tried that?
AirDroid, it's much easier than messing around with drivers & cables, especially if you're using more than one computer.

Holy Crap. Airdroid is amazing. Definately use that.
Note: I've tried other apps like airdroid, but this is the only one that I've gotten to work.

Ubuntu doesn't support MTP natively, so it does matter. However, it's a pain in the ass to install (could never get it to connect to my device).

I found AirDroid to be extremely slow at transferring files. USB is 100x faster for me.
To be able to see the nexus 7 in windows and use SMTP you must have windows media player installed and configured. There are a few versions of windows 7 which doesn't include windows media play so check if you have it installed. I couldn't see my nexus until I installed media player

USB is faster in my experience but no where near 100x faster, if you're using a wireless N router.

Just FYI 802.11n isn't much faster than 11g on any of these devices because none of them support 40 MHz bandwidth yet. Max data rate with a single 11n 20 MHz is still only 65 or 72 Mbps compared with 54 Mbps with 11g (real transfers speed are about 40% of data rate). I'd expect to see about 3-3.5MB/s with 11n and 2.5 MB/s with 11g.
USB should be able to go 10+ MB/s, butit varies with device and software (for example ICS killed USB transfer to 1 MB/s on SGS and Nexus S for some reason). I'm looking forward to seeing how it is on the Nexus 7.
I was super disappointed when I got an 11n network and my SGS still only connected at 65 Mbps, and apparently the mobile chips with 40 MHz support which allows up to 150 Mbps data rate are still a generation away (rumour is the Iphone 5 will have it).
I got myself into a bad state where ADB would work, but MTP would not because when I first booted the device, the first thing I did (before even booting up properly) was to do a fastboot oem unlock, which I had to install drivers for. Unfortunately the drivers that Windows installed from the SDK usb_drivers package were incorrect for doing MTP.
Here's what I had to do to get the drivers for my Nexus 7 working right on Windows 7 x64 (to allow ADB and MTP):
On the tablet:
Settings -> Storage -> Menu -> USB computer connection -> set to MTP
Settings -> Developer options -> USB debugging -> Checked
Plug the tablet into the computer. Make sure your phone isn't plugged in for this.
On the computer, open Device Manager.
You should see Android Phone up at the top of the list with one entry under it (I don't remember the text, now; something about ADB). Right click on that entry, check the box to uninstall the driver and click OK.
Unplug the tablet.
Reboot if asked.
Once that's done, plug the tablet back in.
Give the computer a moment to recognize the device.
You may see it appear as an MTP device at this point.
Go into Device Manager (open it again if you had to reboot) and see if there are any unrecognized devices (I had 2).
Right click on each one in turn and update the driver.
Point it at extras\google\usb_driver under the Android SDK directory. If you're warned about an unsigned driver, you'll need to accept that for this to work, but it's your choice.
After this, I could access the device via MTP and ADB on Windows 7 x64. Good luck.
transfer file from PC to N7 over USB
I tried to xfer file from my window XP, SP3 to the N7 over USB.
Contrary to the guide, after the USB is connected there was no
"mass storage device" under "My Computer" to put files into.
However there is an MTP device. I tried to use Window
media Player to save an mp3 files to "portable device" but
this did not do anything. My N7 is strictly stock, JB 4.1.1
Any clues to do this is appreciated.
YESSSS
That's what I was doing wrong, thanks! I've been taking Debugging for granted.

Goodevening, a friend of mine has a nexus7, he can see files from sticks, usb ,e.t.c. but he wants to edit files on the nexus 7 back to a stick or H.D.D. is this possible?

Not entirely sure what kind of process might be needed, but is it at all possible to use the older method of transferring files between a computer to an Android device (USB Mass Storage) instead of MTP?
MTP (in my experience) is... not ideal in most cases. File transfers are seemingly slower, can only do one thing at a time (I think if your transferring a file, you can't even browse other folders on the MTP device), and sometimes file transfers just get stuck for no reason. Was trying to copy over a few PDF's to my N10 and it seems to just hang randomly, had to reboot the device 4 times already (twice to just create and rename a folder).
what about the option in settings -> storage -> and tap the menu button on the top right and select USB Computer connection?

I already did that and tried both options (MTP & PTP), but the N10 does not show up on my computer at all in either case, with or without USB debugging. I have had no such problems with my other android devices (all still running gingerbread, in case that matters).
My N10 is rooted and my computer runs xubuntu 12.04; I don't have a window box to test... Any suggestions? Thanks!

Unfortunately the answer is no.
There was a long discussion on the Galaxy Nexus forums about it a while back.
I also wish for a usb mass storage option for compatibility with radios for playing music. They don't read mtp/ptp for any generic one I've come across.

Hmm, but what's the main thing stopping this from being possible? I thought I heard of a few JB devices that were able to get USB Mass Storage (LG Optimus G I think has a method, or whatever the phone is that has similar parts to a Nexus 4), and a Galaxy Tab I used to have had Mass Storage in ICS.
Mass storage is possible when the sdcard volume is actually a separate disk. On the Nexus 10 this is an "emulated" sdcard and cannot use USB mass storage safely because that protocol gives exclusive control to PC.
The easiest solution is to use one of the many wireless transfer apps like AirDroid.
Another option for Linux users if you really want a wired transfer is to use adbfs. This is a FUSE wrapper around the usb android debug protocol.
https://github.com/spion/adbfs-rootless
adbfs would give you seamless mounting just like USB Mass Storage.
Another solution, though not a seamless mount, is QtADB: http://qtadb.wordpress.com/
This is another wrapper around the usb android debug protocol.
Oh my god, thank you for the AirDroid recommendation. Holy crap is this program useful with my new nexus 4.

MTP storage to USB storage: accidental solution!

dear espionage,
i just wanted to share this with you in case it would be helpful. in fact, you might even have more technical know-how to find out how i accidentally managed this useful fix. first, the reason i was looking for this MTP to USB storage was my habit of synchronizing my thumb-drive to my desktop using any free synching software. this of course, can be only be done when the storage device is recognized as a DRIVE. unfortunately, i believe with the updating of the OS to 4.1 onwards, the USB storage option has been removed, and now only access to MTP is possible. the bad side to this is that one's device is recognized as a portable media device and this means i can no longer synch like i did before the contents of the SD card to my desktop.
second, i found the solution accidentally by installing MultiMount-SD v.2.5 into my Sony Xperia V (LT25i). accidentally i say, because when i clicked on it for the first time, it wouldn't work. it showed a help tip saying that i should trying enabling what it called an MTP fix provided by the program. i did this, restarted the program and guess what happened. there occurred a looping sequence (i guess unending) device recognition-mount and unmount (the PC sounded this off many times), since there was no end to it, i decided to UNINSTALL the program even while the recognition loop was going on. in the meantime one could see a drive appearing in the EXPLORER with a (?), then it would appear with an assigned drive letter, then finally disappear, and so on.
i successfully uninstalled the MultiMount apk, and surprisingly even with the message that the device wasn't properly recognized or installed, i could now connect my Xperia and it mounts as a USB storage device and no longer MTP. to test this 'accident', i tried connecting it to my desktop, running Windows 7, and it worked without any hitches! I don't really mind losing the MTP option, sides it's very limited in its connectivity with the PC. Another bonus, is despite this, i can still communicate with my device through the MyPhoneExplorer program that allows one to send text messages and other stuff. This was one wonderful accident.
oh, one last thing, even with rebooting my phone, the setup seems to have become a 'permanent fix'. now, when the device is connected one sees in the activated portions in the top menu saying: USB Storage - SD card connected to PC. This was never there before... And i wonder what MultiMountSD must have left permanently to allow my Xperia V to now connect as USB storage. Yahoo!!!
i hope though, you could see what the technical side of this accident is, so that somehow something more stable could be done or programmed without having to go through the 'accidental' procedure i have detailed above.
ciao,
bodega1968

Thanks SmokinCharger! I guess it's quite clear that attempts to allow certain devices to be read in USB Storage mode is a hardware configuration. If your device isn't designed for it, then it won't be able to do this. It's like wanting your volkswagen to have a 6th gear... thus, what was posted previously is true:

*I also would like to apologize what i've posted earlier regarding my accidental discovery with Multi-Mount SD. What the app actually did was to access a feature in my device (rooted Xperia V LT125i) which i wasn't aware of. All the time, my device was actually configured to have both MTP and USB Storage.:silly:
So for such devices that are hardware configured only to be MTP or PTP, the only 'solution' or 'alternative' would be to "ROOT" them and set them up with OTG (On the Go) USB access. This may have some hitches, but i've been using this quite a lot. Sometimes though, a RESET is required so that explorer applications would function normally.
Thanks again. I guess this will be all for now in our attempts to reconfigure something that is hardware defined in certain devices.

You're welcome. Chainfire is a great and well known developer that has development many great apps including Stickmount. Look it up in Play especially the Pro version, which is "The price is aimed at being approximately one beer at the bar ". It works with mounting the UBS OTG. The Pro will automatically mount and unmount.
I tried to connect my nexus 4 to my PC , but it would not recognize it under my computer like it should so I could drag and drop. I tried mounting it as MTP and PTP and neither would be recognised.
I ended up transferring my pictures using adb, but I don't know why it didn't work the standard way.
Anyone have any ideas?

Maybe you've got the same problem that we have here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2005437
Maybe you try:
A different USB port
A different USB cable
Uninstall existing drivers + installing the drivers again
A different computer
And if all that didn't help you can join us in the above mentioned thread. We don't have a solution yet but maybe we can draw some attention to the issue.
All the driver seem to be fine and the nexus 4 is recognised via adb. It used to work before so I don't what's wrong.
Edit: yes USB debugging was on
Ok, but that's actually good! What happens if you plug it into a different usb port?

Edit: I didn't find my N4 as a storage device, so you can't find it as a letter in your explorer but a real device.

By George, I fixed it I went into device manager I right clicked on SAMSUNG android phone then nexus 4 under that section, then I clicked update driver. Then I clicked on browse my computer for driver software after I clicked on let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer and I select mtp. The all of a sudden auto play came up with my device connected as a camera (ptp)
Now all my phones show up under my computer
MTP uses a completely different driver from ADB. So you can have one working but not the other.

I have the correct drivers on my PC and its not a big deal because I'm only plugging it in to charge it..but when the little 'windows explorer' pops up..about once out of every 5 or 10 times do I actually see the phone and can browse directories and copy stuff.
the rest of the time the explorer window is 'blank' when it pops up.
like i said..it doesnt really bother me because i haven't had a reason to need it showing up reliably on my desktop..just curious if this has happened to anyone else.
FYI, the phone screen always says "connected as a media device" regardless of whether its showing up on my Win 7 PC desktop or not.

I think my "issue" is on my XP laptop. On Win7 desktop (using the same drivers from that link) I have no problems with mtp and usb debugging on. Good catch!
cool tip!!! i'll install those drivers.
PS do they work with ALL android devices? my kids have 2 tmobile 'mytouch' android phones i just bought off ebay and the drivers i've used are pretty picky as well.
I also had an issue with USB Debugging on with no functioning MTP on Windows XP. I solved it and documented it with a post over in the N7 forums (reading the posts clued me in):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35667806&postcount=23
Windows 7 has native support for MTP so it most likely will never see these issues -- although there are a few exceptions.
Hello.
Three weeks ago my Nexus 4 is recognized by my three computers (work, home and friend) like a drive. Now it is not anymore recognized by friend 's computer: I hear the sound of connection but no change in file manager. However it works fine on two other computers (home and work). In addition the Nexus 4 of my friend is always recognized by these three computers.
I tried to install N4 drivers on Friend 's computer. No change, my Nexus 4 is not recognized by friend's computer. I tried the debug mode too. No change. And the nexus 4 of my friend works on the three comptuters. Very frustrating .
These two Nexus 4 is updated with 4.2.2, in stock rom, not rooted, 16Go, v11.
Does someone could help me to solve this problem without saving my data and then restoring to factory values?:highfive:
Thanks.
I forgot to write that i used only one usb wire on the same usb port. To be sure that the problem is not the wire or the usb plug.
Do you currently have USB Debugging turned on? Turn it off and see what happens...the reason I say is that my work PC can either see is as MTP with USB Debugging off or through adb with it on - not both.

Thanks i will try your solutions tomorrow. But these solutions doesn't explain why one Nexus 4 works on the friend 's computer and the other Nexus 4 doesn t work: same wire and same usb plug.
I plugged the nexus on my computer. And I unistalled the driver of nexus in my device manager unplugged and plugged again the nexus. And then let windows recognize the nexus and install his own compatible driver. Thanks nhatters.
The problem was that for run application named carbon I had to install in computer first the adb driver and carbon for computer. And this driver does not recognize my nexus which have not carbon (for mobile install).
i had the same problem few minutes ago .. i just turned USB Debugging on and voila the PC detected my nexus 4.
Aha i had the same problem i just lowered the notification shade selected usb device n selected camera option and reverted back to the media transfer and that fixed it

Same problem for me on Windows 7. I have tried everything - different cables, different ports, enable/disable USB debugging. Even uninstalled drivers etc. It is getting detected on Windblows and is showing up in the taskbar as an USB device with a green mark. But it is not showing up as a drive or the MTP device. Frustrating to no end!
im gonna try to research in microsoft website which drivers are not originally installed in my computer and delete all the wird ones maybe some other driver from another hardeare like another cell phone or something is interfering. Hope I dont delete something that will make my computer not work right.

It's not the same because I've tried adb and nothing. Your problem can be fixed by modifying google drivers. In the other hand I tried a friends nokia phone with same usb cable and started installing drivers right away.. Mine does nothing, not even a connection sound just charging. so It's not the cable. I'm starting to think the micro usb port got damaged or something really wrong with the rom but still I've tried to see if reseting the phone works and nothing.
Seems like its an issue with 4.2.2. Since last week my N4 was acting very strange. when I connect to my pc; It would connect and disconnect every second. After checking in Device Manager; my Nexus 4 was listed under SAMSUNG Android Phone . I end up uninstalling it (plus check delete driver software). Then I rebooted my computer. It reinstalled the driver and now its working. Thought my wire was broke.
This worked for me, it shall work for everyone else
Open the start menu and type in device manager and click on it, it should npbringba window up. Now at the stop it should say android device or something similar, drop down that section and right click to delete "Google ADB Interface" which was for me should be for you also. After make sure you check the box in the confirmation to delete the driver. Reboot your PC plug in your device and enjoy!!!
Hi all
Got my shiny new nexus 6p, connected it to my computer to transfer files etc and i get diddly squat! (nothing happens).
A quick google search suggests enabling developer settings, installing drivers etc but again nothing works.
PTP I think works but I want MTP does not. Using Airdroid at the moment but tranfering things take an age.
Can anyone help/advise?
The default USB connection type is "Charging". Have you tried to drop down notification shade and select file transfer?

Yes there are two MTP is the one that SHOULD work for transferring files, but that does nothing. PTP actually shows as a drive/disc on my laptop but it does not allow transferring files.
Seriously i cant be the only one with this issue, unless im doing something very stupid.

Grab the latest USB driver?
I'm just throwing stuff out there hoping it helps.

Needed to change the driver from PTP to MTP and voila it worked.

Awesome!
Sent from my Nexus 6
It is nightmare to recognise it to Windows 10 14393 LTSB version.
Tried everything MTP not showing as Nexus 6P, adb and fastboot are working but no file transfer.
Quite odd. I have not had any issues connection my 6p to windows 10. I am on version 1607 build 14393.321. Plugged up and worked. I did read though that some have had the wrong driver installed if they had a Nexus 5...
You need to enable developer mode on the phone and allow usb debugging. Really frustrating but worked after applying these settings on the phone.
