Just tried out the latest Froyo build for the EVO, and it is insanely fast. I would be using it as my daily if I could get Swype and a few other apps like Sky Map working.

+1, that's the only thing that's keeping me from flashing the Froyo rom; i used Froyo on my Nexus One and it was amazing; but, i need the camera because i don't know when i'll be taking pictures; i had about 150 pictures on my N1 the last couple of weeks so i use the camera a lot
Using ROM Manager I have a 2.1 ROM already setup and backed up so when I need a camera I just flash it real quick..BAM camera in 2 minutes!!
Lol switch really fast .wateva

So have you tried the method or are you just talking out your ass about something you don't use?
Yes I can switch to my fully working 2.1 ROM that i have backed up in 2 minutes..I could be a few seconds off though.
That is a fact!

2 minutes may be fast compared to the time it normally takes to change ROMs, but 2 minutes can be an eternity when taking photographs of animate subjects.

How does scrolling/swapping screens compare? Does it finally feel as snappy as other phones (ie incredible, n1 etc)?

I've never had any lag problems when scrolling in the first place, and I've never used one of the other devices, but the speed of boot, loading widgets, and benchmarks was insane.

That's good news. So is this! www.engadget.com/2010/06/19/android-2-2-build-frf72-for-nexus-one-finally-leaks/
It's faster than 2.1, but still laggy. Games get a slight boost but not significant. Quadrant first person test runs maybe 2-3 fps faster.
So basically all the major issues that existed with 2.1 are still there. Lackluster game performance, 30 fps lock and laggy response. Everything does improve a bit though.
Don't forget there is no sense ui either. That's one of the best things!

It elevates in certain areas and fails in others. I notice lag and stutter when scrolling. Not to mention after awhile I got a lot error messages when sending SMS... None the less it's nice to experiment with but not much more then that at the moment

That's pretty crazy. I takes my phone at least 2 minutes just to check the MD5 sums when trying to restore a backup from clockwork. I just did it today in the car and I'd estimate closer to 5-7 minutes for it to do everything & boot. Maybe my phone sucks?

I get full boot in 4-5 minutes but its well worth it. Like mrdsl said I could careless about the camera and if I know I'm leaving my house to go to where I might be taking pictures, I just flash roms on the way but honestly my phone isn't primarily for pics unless I'm out for an occasion or on vacation. Camera is the very last thing on my mind when purchasing phones, but having 8mp is great when you know you need to take some pics.

I noticed you have an n1...in your opinion how does the evo compare? If I ditch this phone it would prob be for that.
I picked this up yesterday so thought id share what I think about it ill try and give some structure to this but will end up waffling.
Feel of the phone: the feel of the phone is solid id say it feels way better then the s1 no where near as slippy or creaks as much. The textured back actually helps but the body definetly could do with being thicker... Just gives me an excuse for a bigger battery . If you have small hands like myself then using the phone one handed becomes difficult especially going for the notification bar or an app thats in the top left or right corner.
Call quality etc etc brilliant... turning the messaging app sideways changes the interface where you can scroll through all your different threads and view whats been said in each which I mentioned because its ingenious. I can't remember whether s1 did that :-\ .
The screen... Where to begin lol. Okay well remember when you went from lcd to super amoled.... The change to the + isn't as drastic but definetly noticeable. Not as blurry with text and brilliant colors obvs... The screen actually feels so smooth lol I dont know if its because its new but it feels like silk.
Music playback is brilliant and once youve downloaded power amp player or similar the s2 is incredible for music playback clear and loud. It plays everything In my library which has an array of formats so thats good news.
Camera I haven't used much to be fair... But im thankful for the flash handy as a light more then anything.
Touch wiz 4... Brilliant so integrated and together not laggy and actually looks brilliant... I actually havent changed the launcher more then satisfied with it. The phone has not stalled on me yet. The s1 was terrible for that straight out the box but this is the complete opposite functionality out the box definetly 10 out if 10 should be a relief for those who had bad experiences with the s1. It has loads of nifty features that you find by accident lol and then spend 10 mins looking for more.
Gps... fixed and works perfect... thats the honest truth lol.
Battery life... I'm definetly a fidgety son of a... so my phone barely gets put down texting calling browsing... Then browsing the same thing again lol this phone holds its own definetly brilliant battery life after I get used to owning an s2 it will definetly last a day... Atm im pulling it out my pocket every 30 seconds.
The browser is super slick on the s2 will give desktops a run for their money... Flash support is flawless... I wont mention what site I used for it though lol. There seems to be no problem downloading files like there used to be on s1.
I think thats about it.
Sorry for any idiosyncrasies or for any thing used in the wrong context
Ive seen a few posts in other threads about the head set quality... Personally the head phones supplied in the box are great they cancel noise out almost completely. if your an audiophile they should be good enough.

Good info man - Definitely helps sway me even closer to buying one. Let me ask this: how does the battery life compare to another device? For me, that's a better comparison as I get 2-3 days battery life on my Nexus One because of my usage. Does the battery double the Galaxy 1? Triple?
Thanks!
Galaxy 1 doing the same thing would not last me a day. Im geussing this will easily...

Seem like a good replacement for my Liquid which isn't working that well since the 2.1 update.
If it's relatively free of big problems I'll probably pick it up when it is released.

I really appreciated that Vlad Savov's review of the SGS2 on engadget was written from the perspective of someone looking at the usability of the phone in ways it normally is not. Yours and Vlad's observations give me hope that it will truly be a solid replacement for my Nexus One.

Got mine about 10 this morning. I'm at work on the boat and I let my wife hold the computer while I'm here for the next 8 days so I can't even upload my tunes yet. Damn you marriage!!
Got it yesterday and have gotten about 1k songs uploaded...working great on the evo and the xoom. I like the UI and the color changing background is nice can't wait to see this thing all polished up.

is it a battery killer or is it just like a regular music player for you? just wondering since i want to use it as my main music player
got mine 2 days ago, loooving it! Have like 4k songs up now, ever since my Zune HD died, even my 32gb card wasn't enough, but this works, and it works awesome!
So far is seems very solid. I love it! And honestly, I don't mind if Google's negotiations with record labels fell through, I'd rather purchase music through iTunes and keep all my music in one place anyway.

I switched as well. Loved the HTC, thought it would hold me over past my normal 4 months. I was wrong, lol. Was and is a great phone. The g2 is better in my opinion. But comes with tradeoffs depending on your likes. Boom sound, miss them, but adjusted quickly, and believe it or not, I actually liked and miss blink feed. But taptu is a cool news app that you can incorporate all news you like. Phones are almost same size but yet. 5 difference in screen size. Screen is phenomenal on this phone, battery, forget it, I get average 25 hrs with 4 hrs plus screen time and plenty of calling, 2 push emails, loads of texts. Hard to kill battery. So basically, I was weary as well, made the change, and am very satisfied with this device.
And another one who switched from the ONE. Only regretting it a little bitregarding to HTC's update Speed but overal I'm happy with the G2.
The package what the G2 offers is pretty good and you can't go wrong as long you don't mind waiting a little bit longer for Updates

G2=best phone on the market ATM. But I guess it all depends on what makes a phone best to you. G2 has got everything going for it besides the actual feel. I hate this slippery *****.

After 5 warranty returns (purple camera), at&t offered to exchange my One for another device. I chose the G2. I've been using it for the last day now, and am really contemplating on keeping it. It comes with a great amount of useful software features (notification while charging! Tap screen to wake..and more.) Obviously the audio is not as good, but I don't spend a lot of time watching movies or anything on my phone, so I can get over that!
Battery life seems to be incredible thus far.
I am also pretty happy with the camera as well. The colors look sharp. I think people look a little washed out or cartoonist on the screen in indoor lighting , but the stock app does some processing afterwards correct it. I'd like to post some camera shots to compare since I still have my One. It is Thanksgiving tho, so perhaps tomorrow ?
One negative I will bring up is the auto brightness. I don't know if others have this since I'm new to this device, but auto brightness doesn't seem to work very well, so I downloaded Lux from play store and it works great. So it must be LG 's logic

Auto brightness on stock blows. Very slow and wonky. Lux app removed the problem for me. Even on my last 3 lg devices, the auto brightnes was slow and sucked. Expected it.
Here's a couple comparison pics between the G2 and One. First pic is from G2.
Edit.. apparently you can't add more than one pic using the app.. please stand by while I work out the technical difficulties ?

ok here are G2 vs HTC One photos I just took outside (G2 photo is the first photo) No special settings on either app, just opened camera app and point and shoot..
I prefer the G2 pics. You?
I've had my nexus 4 since it launched in late 2012, is been great but I can't put up with the bad battery life anymore. Even under clocked it, changed kernals, used other ROMs then coming back to the latest stock. Nothing I did could improve it without significantly crippling the phone performance to the point of making it unusable! But besides that, it's been a nice slick device, bit on the simple side but it delivered
Anyway enough on the nexus 4, I'm getting a refurbished G2 tomorrow, paid an amazing price for it same as the nexus 4 when I bought that.
Is there anything I should know our expect coming from someone who is very used to stock android, and the nexus 4 in general hardware side? Have I got lots to look forward to, or should I keep my expectations low and for those that come from the same device as me and now own the g2, let me know!
It will be good I also switch from nexus 4

I agree, I think G2 is perfect size though. Anything bigger is just too much.
Thanks for the replies! Will do a quick review of it when I get it in the morning or late at night after I come home from work, well see when the postie arrives hah. Been really looking forward to it! Will I miss the build quality of the Nexus 4?
G2 stock is fast and responsive. The custom roms make it all the more smoother.
I used to do all the tweaks to conserve battery in my previous phone, in G2 I'm just trying out all the new roms, not worrying about not having enough battery at all. The focus has turned to performance, since battery is no longer an issue

I came from a Nexus 4 as well and I find the G2 better in every way...there is no comparison it's in a different league. The only thing I miss is the quick OS updates.
I wasnt sure how I would like running a phone with it's own spin on the UI, and had intended to flash a ROM with a more Nexus type experience, but I actually really like a lot of the extra features that LG has baked in to the OS.
Cheers,
Faugly

Came form a Nexus 4 as well. Had the G2 months now, and it is by far a better phone. I kind of miss the glass feel of the Nexus, but it's a very minor whinge is that.
As for first thing to do with it . . . . Set it up, and run it in, may as well leave it completely stock to see how you like that first. Then start tweaking, Nova launcher + Root + Custom Recovery + Xposed + Custom Kernel + Xdabbeb camera mod. I've got all that done, getting around 40-46 hours battery life with 5-6 hours screen on time at 60% brightness permanently and plenty of normal usage and still have 5% battery life left. If I was a very very light user, getting 3 days out of it would be easy.

I will admit that even though I stayed completely stock for ages, as in using lg launcher etc, I always disable things like qslide and all the other things they added, apart from knock on obviously, as that is now something I couldn't live without.
Alright got it I've played around with it for about an hour, messing with settings and setting up my accounts on various apps, all ready to go.
First impression is wow, its beautiful Such a nice screen! And it actually feels lighter then my nexus 4 because of the weight distribution of it in your hand, its spread out more across your hand so it feels lighter then it really is. Great job LG! I do miss the glass feel a tiny bit, I don't mind the plastic feel to be honest, I have dry hands so it actually has a good grip compared to glass for me! I realise I need root already though, because of my precious Titanium Backup going to figure that out next!
Overall first impressions of the hardware and software is very good, glad to see the standards are raised up so high these days, and this is the result.
Oh man the first thing I wanted to do was change that default notification and ring sound STRAIGHT AWAY! So cheesy and blaaaaah! I liked the 'Pick up your phone' choir though, had a good laugh from that one
