WHOA! Froyo really is fast! - EVO 4G General

Just tried out the latest Froyo build for the EVO, and it is insanely fast. I would be using it as my daily if I could get Swype and a few other apps like Sky Map working.

+1, that's the only thing that's keeping me from flashing the Froyo rom; i used Froyo on my Nexus One and it was amazing; but, i need the camera because i don't know when i'll be taking pictures; i had about 150 pictures on my N1 the last couple of weeks so i use the camera a lot

Using ROM Manager I have a 2.1 ROM already setup and backed up so when I need a camera I just flash it real quick..BAM camera in 2 minutes!!

Lol switch really fast .wateva

So have you tried the method or are you just talking out your ass about something you don't use?
Yes I can switch to my fully working 2.1 ROM that i have backed up in 2 minutes..I could be a few seconds off though.
That is a fact!

2 minutes may be fast compared to the time it normally takes to change ROMs, but 2 minutes can be an eternity when taking photographs of animate subjects.

How does scrolling/swapping screens compare? Does it finally feel as snappy as other phones (ie incredible, n1 etc)?

That's good news. So is this! www.engadget.com/2010/06/19/android-2-2-build-frf72-for-nexus-one-finally-leaks/

It's faster than 2.1, but still laggy. Games get a slight boost but not significant. Quadrant first person test runs maybe 2-3 fps faster.
So basically all the major issues that existed with 2.1 are still there. Lackluster game performance, 30 fps lock and laggy response. Everything does improve a bit though.

Don't forget there is no sense ui either. That's one of the best things!

It elevates in certain areas and fails in others. I notice lag and stutter when scrolling. Not to mention after awhile I got a lot error messages when sending SMS... None the less it's nice to experiment with but not much more then that at the moment

That's pretty crazy. I takes my phone at least 2 minutes just to check the MD5 sums when trying to restore a backup from clockwork. I just did it today in the car and I'd estimate closer to 5-7 minutes for it to do everything & boot. Maybe my phone sucks?

I get full boot in 4-5 minutes but its well worth it. Like mrdsl said I could careless about the camera and if I know I'm leaving my house to go to where I might be taking pictures, I just flash roms on the way but honestly my phone isn't primarily for pics unless I'm out for an occasion or on vacation. Camera is the very last thing on my mind when purchasing phones, but having 8mp is great when you know you need to take some pics.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Friend or someone wants to see your phone... You open your "cool" apps to show them..
Phone freezes, locks up, doesn't operate right..
I swear, I can do whatever I want while alone, at my phone works perfect..
Yesterday I show my friends Slingplayer and Homerun3D, sure enough both programs give me problems..
LOL Was in a bad area for slingplayer to work (it works smoothly all the time) and was lagging.. Of course he was like "its a cool concept but who would would ever deal with the skipping"
LOL I swear it never does this, I tell him..
Then I go to show him the Homerun3D game and of course it locks up on me, lol
It always happens like that,...
Sounds like Murphy is a good friend of yours!
That happens to me sometimes but only when I'm doing something totally unimportant.
Your phone knows that your friends are unworthy to bask in its warm embrace and enlightenment.
It goes into clam mode, shuts up tight and looks like a paperweight until you put it away
That or a bad flash mixed with user error

More than I honestly thought. There is a ton of info on the evo that I find useful, even though I'm rooted stock.
I find my evo to be the most reliable handset I've had since maybe before smartphones were around. I still can't believe I haven't flashed and reinstalled my OS 10 times by now and I have had this since august. Granted I did do some playing around with Roms when I first got it. But every since I decided to give sense an honest shot, I haven't been back to custom.
This is the first android phone for me and the first time I didn't feel the need to tinker around with every little thing.
I loved wm 6.5 but it was still wm, and it was full of reliability issues. I still miss my old touch pro 2 and its kwyboard, but my evo is way more reliable.

Picture a layer cake filled with froyo between the layers. A leaky app makes a hole in the layer, froyo leaks up and mixes with the next layers froyo, causing it to spill and the bottom to collapse. The maitre'd named NAND tries to restore it so it looks like the picture on the menu.
One day the froyo got real warm and the menus were changed simultaneously. NAND could not restore it and even the picture had changed.
You see the chef had thought it would be faster and take less work to refill the layers, rather than to assemble and build them when they were ordered.

I actually love sense and do not see why people wouldn't want it..
I also got an extended battery which I only use when I know I will not be near a power source for a while.. I have the Otterbox case and just LOVE IT!! so I try to keep with the stock battery..
That being said I use Fresh's rom, because its pretty much stock with some extra goodies.. And full Sense..
I really don't have problems with my phone.. Its just typical with Murphys law,, lol
Oh,i did think of something crappy.
When I first got my evo,i was telling my friends about how awesome it is and how sweet the camera and video recording is, now my video doesn't seem all that great. In fact in 720p it looks so crappy and choppy that I don't feel like its worth having or using.

Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
You can get a 32gb card and still have same issues. You need a class 4 or above. If I could remember I'd post direct statement from htc employee. A lot go with a class 6, but anything more than class 4 and its all the same fluff. Class 2 just doesn't write fast enough for Evo's video.
Sent from my Evo
I think I saw that conversation about the max speed the evo could take advantage of, but I thought I read some where anything beyond class 2 carries no benefit in how well our evos record video in 720p.
Mine is choppy outside in sunlight and simetimes the video out right freezes for a split second. As far recording inside its so low quality that I don't even try to record.

Upgrade to Epic 4g from evo 4g?

So my evo is starting to act up, wondering if the epic would be a viable replacement?
Anyone done this or have any input on it?
Mostly use my phones for the tether, texting and killing time at work.
Thanks for any help!
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Not much of an upgrade unless you want the keyboard or a slightly better screen if you ask me. If your phone is acting up it may be software related? Try flashing a different ROM or something
Could be rom, but Im thinking the meeting with the concrete today may have something to do with it to be honest.
Could be warranty time. Lol.
I'll try a different Rom in a bit.
Cyanogen mod time.
But nothing really better than the evo then?

The Epic is better then an EVO overall..but it boils down to is it worth for you to spend money buying a new one...
your usage is mostly fairly simple, I guess you'd have better time texting if you use the physical kb I guess...or if by killing time you mean running high end games..then Epic would definitely be an improvement..
I mean what do you mean by "acting up" and "killing time"..be a bit specific?
I'll tell you this though Epic runs really awesome stock with little to no issues...

Let us answer that question after official froyo is released and/or Cyanogen mod is fully ported.
I have had 5 random restarts, seem to all happened during data usuage, but I haven't had random ones on this phone before. Trying to strain the phone some more now.
My usuage for my phone is mostly just the tether/wifi tether, facebook chat, texting, mp3 player occasionally, haven't really gotten into gaming on the phone.
I know it may me being paranoid... And I haven't bought a new phone in a while haha.
And anyone swype on their epic? Or is everyone all die hard keyboard?
Thanks everyone
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I just recently got the epic over the evo, due to the beautiful screen and so far I'm thrilled. The Evo is a very nice phone and I'd say on par with the epic but the epic has the keyboard along with a super amoled screen. Some say the 8MP camera is a plus for the evo but personally I'd rather have a samsung 5mp than a htc 8mp, just due to their reputation. But both take beautiful pics, so it really comes down to is the keyboard and amoled with gorilla glass worth it for you? I rarely use the slide out, mostly swype, but for long emails, texts, etc the slide out is extremely useful!
So evaluate the pros / cons and see if its worth it for you! I'm more than happy I went with the epic!
Sincerely,
D3luSi0n4L
I agree with D3luSi0n4L, you just need to evaluate the pros/cons as they pertain to you. I'm overall pleased with my Epic because IMO the screen quality is superior and I like to have a physical keyboard (especially when traveling, Emulators play nicely with keyboards ) The only hangup with the Epic is the lackluster support from Samsung. If you really like playing with new ROMs and constantly tweaking your phone, then the EVO will be better for you. Lets face it, HTC phones just have more support behind them. Hell, even the Hero is still getting updates...
Like i said, figure out what's most important to you and go from there.
The epic is a viable replacement. Its noticeably smaller though, even if its only .3 inches. That might make a difference. Other than that its basically the same+keyboard. And froyo isn't out officially yet. and there's a considerable difference in development for the epic and evo...so you might wanna take that into account too, although stock dk28 froyo is good enough. I've been running it since it firs got leaked and my gps is perfect and everythin else works. Even the browser. Wen froyo is officially released, this phone will easily beat evo

Will have to agree with this statement. But again, this is MY OWN personal thoughts on it. I have both phones as well and I find myself using my EVO a lot more than my Epic. Not saying that the Epic is not a good phone because it is a good phone.
At the end of the day though, its all in what YOU want and what works best for YOU. Thats something no one can speak on. Either way, your in a win-win! GOOD LUCK!

A lot of people use swype..most ppl use kb for long messages and gaming...in my case I need kb for remote desktop programming in emergencies...I use on screen kb by default...but I do enjoy using the physical kb for when surfing the net..I so hate using the onscreen kb when surfing webpages on all phones in general..mostly since..
1) web is ment to be surfed vertical resolution anyways
2) the onscreen kb popping up is a mess that blocks my screen :/
hence the physical KB makes surfing the net more enjoyable for me at least..
If you would like to know what we got going over the EVO its:
1) Better processor
2) 3x better GPU
3) 6 axis accelometer
4) super amoled
5) keyboard
6) Better camera
7) Better Audio
8) Gorilla Glass
9) Built in video drivers such as xvid/divx/mkv etc
10) and more...
and probably a few other things I'm missing...I'm not saying the Epic has no flaws..but its definitely a step up hardware spec wise..

Apps opening? - Fastest phone I've own yet...
Lag? - yes. Going from an app like Angry birds to home screen, there's an initial lag. It's annoying. Must be Blurrrrr.
Camera? - Disappointed...iPhone 4 is definitely better.
Let's just say I'm ready to install a custom Rom without all the bloatware and lameBlur. Blur kills the phones IMO.
Not many phones can beat the iphone 4 camera appart from Nokia, but is the camera on the Atrix better than the HTC Desire or nexus s.
Cheers.

Go back to the Nexus S boards then rather than trolling here. You clearly don't have the phone, any anything you state is a matter of opinion, and clearly jealousy since you're on our boards and not yours.

Came from Nexus One. Good upgrade.
Confirmed that with proper account provisioning, unlimited 4G data for $30, and the "phone" apn, upload is either capped by AT&T or HSUPA is disabled on the hardware by AT&T. Tethering plan may increase upload speed but I got no confirmation in this yet.
Otherwise it's an excellent upgrade from the N1.

Should note that if you look at the reviews out there, the N1 battery life is crap (compared to the Atrix). Also the Atrix (like most newer Android phones) has a proper multitouch screeen. So you'll notice way better typing input immediately.
I will admit.... it's nice that nucentury is at least starting to use SOME punctuation. Not enough, but it's still an improvement from the first post i've seen from him in his other thread.
Besides.... who would even take the advice of someone who thinks that a gyroscope makes a phone that much better than any other device when it comes to gaming? A gyroscope has the same exact flaw as Microsoft Kinect. It's only logical to be used for a certain genre of games. Anything outside those genres, and it's just a useless addition to the phone.
Everything for me is great thus far. Phone is very snappy using LauncherPro also using Beautiful widgets.
Typing is spot on. Nice screen resolution. I would say the phone is overall faster than the Captivate and Inspire.

Xoom lag issues

Anyone else have lag issues when unlocked, rooted, with oc'd kernel installed running at any speed. I mostly notice when coming out of standby mode. Text input on web pages is considerably slow, also loading of web pages. When opening apps it doesn't seem to be affected other than movie playback. Any feedback would be appreciated.....

this happens to me too but it never lastes more than a min or two.
hmmm i havent noticed this at all. have been overclocked for a little over 2 weeks with only a couple restarts due to theme installs
i mean it isn't something that is super noticable for me but sometimes my keyboard lags for a couple mins but then it gets back to normal. i mean it is expected when you have a device that still hasn't had its "official full" update lol.

Yeah, but compare this experience with stock on the Captivate (cause it's not even close to Serendipity), and that's a whole different comparison
It took a while for good, stable kernels to come out for the Captivate as well. Hopefully Google changes their mind about the source code once the rest of these tablets start coming out, and then we might get some of your fantastic meals for the Xoom too!

If you are running performance mode with setcpu and have a min freq above 250, the CPU will drop to 250 when you turn screen off and not go above it.
Simple fix is to keep setcpu on "on demand", but you can also keep it on performance and manually bump the freq up by going into setcpu every time you turn the screen on.

Yea, the only time i lags for me is when i am scrolling via browser or something with a lot of texts / graphics. I would assume a dual 1Ghz would be more smooth than this.

I'd say that the Xoom is as bad as stock Eclair was.

You have something wrong then. I do not have that experience. In fact, if I try to do some intense things like video recording using your Captivate ROM, my phone chokes where my Xoom does not. Granted, the Xoom does lag for me with certain things, mostly certain web sites in the browser including this site, the overall responsiveness has been just as good or better than my Captivate with your ROM.
Perhaps you should be more specific on what you have installed, how your screens are configured, what widgets you are using, etc. so maybe the culprit can be identified. Are you full stock with nothing installed and experiencing this?
I disagree. You have a bad unit or your doing something wrong. Back off the bashing.

This is true. When i had it set to performance i noticed significant lag. When i changed it to on demand it became much smoother.

ROM with decent camera capture speed?

I had to send my HTC Sensation in for a repair, so my myTouch is temporarily my primary phone (and such bad timing at that, too). So, I desperately need a ROM with some good camera performance. I don't know if the camera is really this slow or if I've just been spoiled by Zero Shutter Lag on the Sensation, but it takes super long to take a picture in The Android 4.2 ROM. I'm willing to go back all the way to ICS if I must, and even HTC Sense.
What ROM could I go for?
(By the way, I'm pretty impressed by how far this phone has come, glad to see you guys aren't letting it die )
Honestly, the best photos were on stock FroYo. The camera was always slow, though.
Did you just die a little on the inside?
Froyo... Or Stock...

Did Froyo really have good capture speeds?
It doesn't matter as much now.. I hardly needed a camera surprisingly, and I dropped my phone in snow so now I'm pretty much phone less until the rice dries the water
Even more fun: now my phone won't turn on now I have nothing D:
Awww, what happened?

It fell into some snow. It was working directly after but I put it in some rice and took it out the following morning to see that it wouldn't turn on. No hboot, no recovery, nothing. So, now it's just a fancy brick.
Thank God it's a GSM phone though or I'd have to go through hell to get my number over.
I had to go back to cm7.2 to get nice camera speed again. I love JB or ICS but camera suck with it. Try CM7.2
