Just registered so I have a bit or searching to do.
I'm unable to connect my Original Droid (v2.2) to my N7 with Barnacle.
No problem connecting the 'Droid to my Mac laptop.
The only way I've been able to tether is to FoxFi on my phone and PDA net Tablet on the N7 with limited success.
play.google. com /store / apps/details?id=com.pdanet.tablet (remove spaces)
]
It only runs over Bluetooth.
I can access the web, my IMAP email accounts.
Can't run Pandora or my work Outlook.

I use Foxfi on my phone, and no special apps on my N7, over wifi. The Foxfi "network" pops right up on the N7.

I may be having issues because I'm running v2.2 on my phone.

N7 does not support ad hoc networks, they won't show up. Change the settings on your phone to infrastructure, and it works like a champ.

Anyone got their hotspot working w/o paying for tethering?

After rooting my phone I figured i would give the hotspot a shot. But when i try to browse on my ipad it brings me to the VZW self provision broadband page.
I normally use wifi tether, but i would rather be able to use the built in because its an infasture netowork vs the ad-hoc wifi tether gives me.
Not the case

actually your right and your wrong at the same time sadly; your right about the infrastructure network vs ad-hoc, but wrong about the 3g hotspot app vs. tethering & portable hotspot not an app.
The 3g hotspot app is a verizon product not googles in the sense your looking at.
The tethering & portable hotspot should have been activated in wireless & networks section, right between "Bluetooth setting & VPN settings" from a froyo(2.2) google standpoint but in our case its not even there.
Hope this clears up the mistakes about froyo tethering & portable hotspot and verizon 3g mobile hotspot app.
Yes it does thanks! I have a nexus one So i know what your talking about.

he stated in the post that he was rooted, he just wanted to use the native tethering application.
Does this mean that if we can get a vanilla Froyo or a custom ROM compiled from source that we'll have the true Android hotspot?

That's all fine and well except that the wifi tether app runs in adhoc mode not infrastructure.

why do not you just use pdanet from market?
There was a new experimental Wifi Tether build that was released dismorning bringing it up to Pre9. I was unable to find a change log, still adhoc?

Pdanet creates an ad hoc network just like every other third party app.

If its just the one computer you are logging on with use the BT method very easy and works quite well for free and even on non-rooted phone

WiFi Tethering issue

Trying to use Wifi Tether (google) app in rooted Vibrant (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list?can=2&q=NexusOne)
Everything setup correct and works good on the phone itself. Laptop shows the connection as 'computer-to-computer' network rather than 'wireless network'. Although signal strengh is very good laptop just says "waiting for network..." and never connects. How to change Wifi Tether setting to show as 'wireless network' instead of 'computer-to-computer' network so that it will connect?
You should load the mobile AP patch instead. Works much better than the wifi tether app on the vibrant.

yes. mobileap is like 100 times better!
+1 for mobile ap flash.
I ran wireless tether app forever on my G1 and like this much better.

thanks for replying guys..i went to the mobile AP flash thread and read that you have to do clockwork recovery to flash it. I think when froyo update happens its gonna disable mobile AP flash?? I see people saying (and even Youtube videos) of using Wifi tether and Barnacle wifi legacy to tether from Vibrant. I tried both of them and they show as 'compter-to-computer' network on laptop and it wont connect.
You should delete everything & start from the beginning. If that doesn't work then try it on someone else laptop to see if that's the problem if not is your phone. Maybe is a problem the way u rooted your phone. If it continues doing it on the other laptop u are testing it. Most deff is your phone.
Froyo has wireless AP built in by default. We have yet to know if T-mobile will disable it. If they do, someone will just hack it back in.
Interesting. I prefer wireless tether. I think it works much better than the MobileAP.
So this turns out to be an issue with my laptop. Laptop is not able to connect to ad-hoc (computer to computer) wifi networks. Both wifi tethering app and Barnacle worked on a friends laptop. Got around 2 Mbps from T-mobile 3G.
I did have to update the driver for the wireless chip on one laptop to support ad-hoc networks, but it was worth it. If you're interested, check your wireless chip manufacturer's site for a newer driver.
The TMO sales-droids told me that the froyo update would enable the wireless hotspot (MobileAP), but who knows till we actually get it. Even if it does, if it works like the MobileAP does now, I'll continue using wireless-tether.

MobileAP didn't work for me. Win7 showed no internet activity.
Wireless Tether on the other hand worked perfectly, so YMMV.
Does anyone has a problem while using mobile AP while the connection is steady but after the screen dims or locks up the speed slows down and sometimes cut off the tether to the device? would there be anyway around this?

That did the trick! Thanks mate
I have a question about tethering I'm trying to use the wifi for my gaming console (ps3). It doesn't recongize the ip address. So will it recongize it when the update comes or will it not work for gaming consoles.

maybe a dumb question but i rooted girl's vibrant and flashed mobileAP which worked great the first day. i couldnt get barnacle or google's wireless tether to actually connect to anything. But now she's trying to use it today and it won't connect due to DNS issues. Would it be the phone at fault or the laptop? I already tried refreshing the IP using command prompt but it didn't help.

[Q] WiFi tethering

I have just got my hands on an ASUS transformer tablet . Now I thought ok it's wifi only thats fine I can tether it to my little tattoo and use 3g that way.
Problem is I didn't realise that Android doesn't see adhoc networks to connect to them. So I want my wireless tether to work in infrastrusture mode instead of adhoc.
I've been searching and seen this done for other phones but can't seem find a way to do it on the tattoo/click.
Has anyone found a way to do this?
Well there is a wifi tether app on market wich does the job...with that app your tattoo works like AP for 3G network. Also i think that your tattoo must be rooted.

I'm already using it. Version 2.0.7. but it broadcasts in adhoc mode so the tablet won't even see it.
Well i dont know what to say, my laptop work just fine with wifi tether app on my tattoo.
It will do. Mine to because laptops can see adhoc networks.
Or is there a way to enable android native tether instead of using an app. I've read somewhere that works in infrastructure mode.

I have a similar problem too! It seems that nothing but computers can see ad-hoc networks. So, my Kindle, my Xoom, and other smartphones can't access the network through tethering. Is there a way to make wifi work in infrastructure mode?
Nobody else have had such a problem?
Have you tried this setting?
Wireless Tether:
- Install Wireles Tether from market
- Run app
- Press on init "tethering"
- go to "menu" -> "settings"
- Enable "Wifi-Encryption" For safety...
- Change "Passphrase" (13 chars)
- Change SSID if you want
Yes, I tried: that creates a wep-protected ad-hoc network...

No, I don't think so. I had one app which had to be installed on phone and tab and was able to tether over bluetooth but it was very very unstable and never worked longer than 10 seconds.
Here is my setup:
SGS (i9000) with darkyrom and build in wifi tether + tasker app for automatically switch on and off wifi tether when a specific bluetooth device is connected.
I use my tab in the car and when i start it, the bluetooth connection from phone to the hands-free is established and wifi tethering enabled with tasker automatically. this takes less power and has the full internet speed. works great for me!

I teathered my TF to my friends Droid X thru bluetooth and I was able to surf the inet using his Verizon account.

You can tether over bluetooth (The instructions are around here somewhere)
I use PDA Net connected over bluetooth to my Droid Incredible. I have the paid for version, but the free version should work too. Paid version lets you get into https sites and VPN's. I don't use a lot now since through work I have a MiFi from AT&T, but sometimes I get into GSM deadspots where my CDMA (Verizon) phone works just fine.
You can also use Wireless tether which is free :
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
OR
https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether
Support bluetooth and Wifi. Works great !
PDAnet for tablet works if all you do is use browser

[Q] Will Adhoc WIFI be possible with software patching?

So I'm sure a lot of you had the plan that you just enable wireless tethering on your android phone and connect your kindle fire that way... Well Amazon in their infinite wisdom has disabled that ability. That is pretty much my number 1 need at the moment. I travel a lot and this should have been the first thing amazon added support for since they don't offer a 3G version.
Hopefully with some roms this will be working
As a temporary work-around, certain wifi-tether apps can be setup for infrastructure (rather than ad-hoc) mode. May be worth looking into.
Amazon didn't do it, Android in general doesn't do adhoc. OeMs and users have to patch in Support for it.

I don't know what problems people are having with adhoc. My galaxy s vibrant, I went to mobile ap, turned it on, connected with kindle and was working fine.
Doesn't seem to me thekindle has any problems, maybe its how your droid phone sets up wifi

No, its the kindle. Try setting up a adhoc wifi from your PC or laptop - the Fire won't see it but phones with e.g. cyanogenmod will. Still trying to find a workaround as I need adhoc wireless from PC/laptop...
I got my kindle to connect to my Captivate running wifi tether 3.1, but it wont actually transmit any data. I use static IP's with my home network on the kindle but that shouldnt impact the infrastructure mode with wifi tether would it?
