[Q] Google Play Books/Magazines/Music Outside the US - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

anyone bring a nexus 7 outside the US yet? i have read that books/magazines/music dont work. but with the nexus 7 being wifi only... i have a few questions:
1. do these features disappear like they do on phones? i have a galaxy nexus. non-us apps disappear from the app launcher if you dont have a US sim card. can you at least access the free bundled content when it detects that you dont have a US ip?
2. can you connect to a wireless VPN service and access those blocked services? can you buy stuff with a non-US credit card? i was able to buy blocked content before with my non-US credit card... but through the play web version and a VPN service... i cant seem to buy books anymore. not sure if this is the same with the nexus 7
3. are there any non-root apps that allows the nexus 7 to get a US ip address just by connecting to any wifi hotspot?
im sure there are a lot more questions from non-US pre-orderers of the nexus 7. hope this thread helps us.

Wrong section, this belongs in the Questions section.
I'm wondering this too, except I am willing to root for for these features.

Yep, Questions go in the Q&A section

Yes , through vpn you can access the play store movies and magazine portion and they should also play fine. I used to do that on many of my previous android devices.

Can anyone confirm this yet? Otherwise I need to invest time in setting up a VPN in the US

Play books works fine on my TP in the UK via wifi so I it should work on the N7, I can't see Google crippling their own hardware in that way.

You should see blocked content via VPN, problem is you can't buy anything even the free ones if you don't put in a 'valid' authorized payment option.
Tried it and that's what I found out.

In that case I'm very hopefull, with my own google account I managed to pay with my own creditcard with billing address in USA. My bank accepted it so there will be no issue for me.

so did you get it to work or do you think you can get it to work? sorry. im a bit confused.
getting my nexus 7 in a couple of days still so i cant really try it myself yet.

It works for magazines and music, but it doesn't seem to work for movies/tv shows. I can buy, for example a tv show, but can't download it even when I'm connected through VPN. FYI; using VyperVPN from giganews. Hope this helps

[INFO] Google Music Beta works outside of US

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but Google Music Beta works outside of the US. All that's required is a US proxy to request a invite, once you get it and activated your account for Music Beta, it works no matter where you are.
This is true.
Working fine over bell hspa / canadian ip addressing / canadian google acct
Initial invite from US Ip
Using it in the UK fine, signed up with a US proxy
Signed up while living in the US, moved to Holland in the mean time and it works fine.
I just hope I live long enough to upload all of my music.
I got the invite today. I live in Belgium - when visiting market thru browser, says the app is not compatible with either my TF or my Samsung Galaxy S2. However, the music plays fine in the browser - even the TF.
yeah , it works in spain too, tested on my transformer, sgs-II, my wife's o2x and my old N1. I used a vpn with us IP address to signup for the invite and loaded the apk outside the market
Another happy camper here works great on tablet & nexus S.
Not sure o2 are quite as happy though
It's working for me, too. At least via the website and my Nexus One, I can't make the Transformer sync with it or display my music from Google Music. Settings aren't showing anything helpful. Any ideas on that? Did it just work on your Transformers?
What site do you use to give you a us ip?

Works in Canada without any proxy or anything.

For me, work is a US IP, so the invite suceeded. After that any network will do.
I've heard Starbucks are US as well, so you could try the invite there.

I get "We're sorry. Music Beta is currently only available in the United States"
Maybe it's because I signed up for it when it was announced at IO conference?
I used my proxy to send myself an invitation, but the page said that they will notify me when it's ready.
Also, for those who want a US ip you can use my proxy. (Link in my signature.)
I won't steal your password, but for your own safety change it first, use proxy and then change back after you are done.

[Q] I can't use Google wallet if I am rooted?

This is my first time having an NFC device, so please bear with me. I rooted my phone the evening I received it. Now I'm trying to set up Google Wallet, and it says that my device is unsupported. In the help topic regarding this message, it mentions something about rooted devices being unsupported due to security reasons, can I still use this feature? Is it discouraged in any way?
If anybody has some insight or experience with this, I'd like to know.
I have the evo lte rooted with same unsupported device message, yes it will still work

The reason it is discouraged is because anyone (with the now-how) can brute-force access your pin if your phone is rooted. And then skip away making payments on goodies.

Well seems about as secure as having somebody run off with your actual wallet... So off-topic but where are the places where I can actually use Google Wallet >_>

Any place that has tap-to-pay or pay-pass features (forgot what the actual name is). I've seen it at McDonald's, CVS/Walgreens, Best Buy, and a few other large chains around town.

Plenty of you fly to Japan and China, they have been using it for years. You can try looking up PayPass mechant, such as this link: http://www.google.com/wallet/how-it-works/in-store.html
So it doesn't have to be specifically for google wallet? They work on the things like the speedpass at speedway or your creditcard where you just tap it to the machine and it gets your infO?

Awesome! Looking forward to trying this out in the next few weeks. Hope I remember to try it when I see it...
I tried to use this at Walgreens today. They had the translucent blue PayPass terminal. I sat there for about 30 seconds and nothing happened. I even tried to enter the app and still nothing. NFC was on, and my card is attached in Google Wallet.
I think I set up wallet, then unlocked and rooted, then had to re-set up Wallet. Am I doing something wrong? The clerk was staring at me like I was crazy, just holding my phone next to the terminal....

I had that happen at Taco Bueno. And a McDonalds. But at some McDonalds it works. I think that so few people use this system that when its broken no one complains. And its probably never even tested when they set it up.
Typically you can just tap your phone to the thing (no need to be in the app). It'll prompt you for a PIN. Then you can pay.
If it's not working you may have a poor data connection? I think it requires data to work.

I'd still say it's more secure than that. Anyone can swipe a card and charge it as credit. Relatively few people would know how to brute force hack google wallet on a rooted device.
Everyone.
Google wallet does not require a data connection.
If its not working , I read on the wallet website to "hold it about an inch" from the terminal. Without placing it on the terminal. Try to see if that works.

Yeah mine didn't work at the gas station the other day, though I didn't log out of Google Wallet before I flashed a rom and rooted recently so some say that it'll never work again after that because of the secure element getting locked or something like that. Hopefully that's not true.
I've flashed and reflashed a lot. All you need to do is delete the data, connect to high speed internet like WiFi, then open it up. Worked for me.

Are you abroad at the moment? If you have a wifi only nexus 7 device, market is tailored to each specific country you are accessing the play store through. That could be the reason why you can access it on your phone because you are using a provider from a country that has access to those google features. Not all countries have access to movies or books from the google market.
I am in the UK. i havent changed anything afaik. and the fact that certain things are one phone but not tablet. im rooted and bootloader unlocked using the latest stock build

Odd then. Well if you are up for it, a possible solution to dance around the problem (although it doesn't necessarily solve it...) would be to follow this guide to gain access to those services again: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28259205#post28259205
Your device is already rooted so that saves you one big step. It's simply a way to get around Play store blocks on its features, so it will *maybe* fix your problem since its the Play store that is preventing your device from accessing google movies and books.

Nexus 7 use in Beijing, China.

Hi everyone,
Next Monday I am going overseas to Beijing, China. I have a few questions concerning the nexus 7 overseas
1: Will the nexus 7 charge with the default Asus wall socket in China, or do I need and adapter? If so, where can I get one?
2: Will I be able to connect to Wifi fine there?
3: Will I be able to access blocked websites from the great firewall through apps (such as Google plus, YouTube, etc.). If not, can you suggest a good way to bypass it?
Thanks a lot in advance, I know these are a lot of questions

1 you need an adapter. Amazon and eBay. Your best bet is to get one while you are there.
2 yes if it is not password protected.
3 no. Proxies are your best bet. Google it.

for no.3 its gonna be hard, as there are not any good proxy as far as i know to bypass the GFW of china on Android. on a pc you can use freedom gate which is very good and when my dad goes there he uses it.

1: I use the Nexus 7 charger fine here. Check on it if it says "120-240v" China is on 240 volts so if the charger says that the its fine.
2: Wifi is not a problem.
3: Google+ one you mobile device will work, Facebook youtube twitter, will NOT work. G+ will not work on a desktop though. To get past set up or buy a VPN server. Use the Nexus built in VPN support or download OpenVPN from the Play Store.
If you have the 3g version you will have to trim the Chinese SIM card to fit in the nexus
Ideas are not a crime.

Very Impressed with the Amazon Fire TV (From a Canadian)

I can't overstate how impressed with this little box I am. I picked one up last month on a trip to the US (I'm from Canada) and thought I would play around with it and see how it would work in Canada. With Unblock US and an Amazon account with prime I have been able to access all my prime amazon content on it. As well as US Netflix, Hulu, ETC.
XBMC is very easily sideloaded onto it as well, with or without being rooted which opens up a whole new world of content and goodies.
And once rooted you can do even more cool stuff. I followed guides to add the google app store, remove unwanted menu options, change the launchers, add game controllers, move apps to external drive, and much more. I just installed Google Play Music and now I have complete access to my google music account on the FireTV which is very cool. I'm sure there are tons of awesome apps that work on the FTV. Another favorite is Droidmote Server so I don't keep having to unplug my external drive to use a mouse or keyboard (which many google apps need)
I sold my 2 Apple TV 2's for a very nice profit and I'm going all Fire TV. The only advantage I think to the Apple TV's is if you have itunes and are invested in the Apple Ecosystem which I was not. The menus and everything are much speedier and my ATV2's were prone to random crashes while in XBMC which drove me crazy.
I'm really looking forward to playing around more with this unit and seeing what all the development community can do with it. I think its already awesome and it has a ton of more potential.
question for you
I am in Canada also and use unblock us. Have you tried using the A&E, Lifetime or History Channel apps? For whatever reason they wont work and I am wondering if somehow they realize that you are not in the US. I have no problem with any other apps. Trying to figure out if its a Canada issue or maybe an issue with the app's of fire tv.

You don't need a us credit card address for unblock us, it's a Canadian service from a Canadian company. You need a US credit card for the amazon service.

Those particular apps aren't working for me either. They just crash back to the home screen. I think its a Canada thing as unblock.us does not officially support Fire TV yet. If you get yours working let me know and I'll do the same.
