Coming from a G2x user. - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I own the G2x and I have just paid off my preorder for the Nexus 7 16GB model from Gamestop. I'm naturally a little bitter towards the Nvidia Tegra chip since the Tegra 2 in my G2x has caused the dev community nothing but difficulty due to the lack of driver releases from Nvidia. So my question is, since Google is behind it, are our devs going to get everything they'll need due to the openness of Google? Or will Nvidia restrict that info the way they did with the G2x?
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app

Who knows, Nvidia is known to be very stingy with documentation and openness. Google, wouldn't have much say in the matter as they chose to use the Tegra 3 chip.

What future for Galaxy S ?

If they have already made the accessories obsolete what future is there for the Galaxy S?

There are loads of official goodies for the Tab so perhaps that is the way Samsung are going.
Apple once obsoleted a laptop 6 weeks into launch, and almost silently replaced it.
Don't think about it too much, Apple constantly depreciates accessories, but often, they are just redesigning them, or they felt there was no point in this case, because there were plenty of other car mounts anyway. Don't think too much into it..
There is a new galaxy s derivative thats been released to the japanese market, running 2.2 out of the box

UPDATE: PCMag’s Sascha Segan just posted an article of his own on the rumored device. The post had this to say on the matter: “The unnamed, unlocked Samsung phone is not coming out at an event on November 8, my sources said.” Although earlier in the post he did admit, “Samsung is working on an unlocked Android device that looks like the one in Gizmodo’s pictures. But it may not be called ‘Nexus Two.’”
I personally hope google will wait to use the Samsung Orion in their next Nexus phone. I would definately not buy it if it was based on the hummingbird. Why would I spend all that money for a phone that would basically have the same hardware as my current phone. I personally don't have a huge gripe about lag, and I'm not even running any lag fixes. The software will likely run much better, but not worth the price of a new phone in my opinion.
I'd rather wait for the next generation phones using the new A9 cores which will for sure hit before summer 2011

I believe the rumors are true about the new Nexus Two/Nexus S/Gingerbread Phone will be a slightly updated Galaxy S. Google's timeline indicated that this is about the right time for Gingerbread, and they have already put up that statue on their front lawn basically confirming that a release is imminent. At this point in time, Orion, Tegra 2, or dual core phones are all vaporware and would cost over a grand for each developer, which they will be unwilling to shell out. Galaxy S level of performance is best representative of state of the art right now. The GPU is also quite strong, which means Google can choose to add hardware acceleration to the UI to jazz it up, which they can't do very well with Nexus One and adreno. The line is also available on all networks, means Google can accommodate developers on any network. Samsung has also confirmed that they are working on a phone with Google experience. Why would they be doing one, if Galaxy S is is their flagship? All these things collectively point to an imminent release of the rumored device.

[Off-Topic] Which tablet

I just wanted to ask you guys my fellow Epic owners if any of you own an Android tablet and from a development standpoint which one would you go with? Are there any Epic devs that do any tablet custom work?

Those are the two front runners on my list right now with Asus being in the lead.

If I were to buy a tablet, i'd either get:
Cheap: Nook Color, already has a big community, cm7, hc
Not so cheap: Galaxy Tab 10.1, cleanest looking HC tablet I've seen, and I've seen 'em all.
Posted by Mr. Z's Epic 4G.
transformer has bang for buck value however ive seen two at work haber to be returned due to non responsive screens.
Galaxy 10.1 stopped me from buying the flyer/view. I really liked the 7 inch screen but the galaxy just felt great....nicest thing compared to the ipad.

Yeah it got many bugs and negative reviews due to bugs but after an update im sure that web os will shine on it.Its slow and lags because hp dint have anough time to write the code for touchpad's gpu so basicly right now cpu does all gpu tasks.
Yeah I want GS 10.1 too but I will wait and see if hp fixes touchpad first because I want something different from ios and android.

I have a galaxy tab 10.1 and I love it so much. It was a tough choice between the tab and the Asus transformer... but I just liked the size/weight of the tab better.
Don't buy a Honeycomb tablet.
Wait for Ice Cream or later when the interesting hardware and software optimizations take hold with 10 "retina display" equivalents and quad core processors.
I was gonna buy once a quad core came out..but after seeing a gtab for 250$ new that has a tegra 2 cpu I couldn't resist...it has a port of cm7 and honeycomb. and stuff...they aren't perfect but they work for the most part. Its biggest weakness right now is lack of honeycomb tegra 2 drivers and its screen is not the best LCD tech used..otherwise its ok..

That's why I have no interest in a tegra 2 tablet. Complete and utter failure to play ALL high profile h.264 video in at least 720p, which is something my epic can do and the original ipad can do. Yes,, the original single core ipad..

I had a sylvania tablet for the the longest and manged to get Google Market and froyo on it (unless you had one, you know that was a GREAT feat!) and I was happy with it...unfortunately, circumstances forced me to sell it and when I did he had just gotten rid of his 7' Galaxy Tab, telling me that the simplest tilt would make it change orientation quickly. I was surprised that he chucked it for a sylvania. I plan on either getting a Color Nook next, or try to find a sale on an Acer a500.
Also:ironically, 3 weeks after I sold the Sylvania Tablet, the source code was finally released for it, which means development for it is soon to rise *sigh* real bad time, I guess...
We bought a bunch of sgtabs at work. Love mine from a practical standpoint, but the dev world is a bit behind. I don't think its lacking much, just a reliable cwm and then a complete set of stock files (modem, kernel, rom) and things will be moving. I expect the source will eventually come out. I hear that's what's lacking in the kernel dev dept. Personally I like samsung. When the 4g 10.1 is released I plan on getting that one. Despite the slow update releases, you have to admit, the galaxy s line rocks.

I looked at the Acer A500 for a long time, I really wanted it. But after read tablet reviews on Engadget I changed my mind. The A500 definitely looks great and has a great looking screen.
I have a motorola xoom and just got the 3.2 upgrade. The xoom is the default google experience device so it gets all of the updates (us only). Which is quite nice when compared to the epic's slow upgrade process.

Anyone watched the Google I/O?

I really do not know what to say
Xoom is Motorola's first dual-core tablet
Atrix is Motorola's first dual-core mobile phone
Motorola upgraded attitude gap is too great
I can not imagine when Xoom has been upgraded to 4.1 when the Atrix is still 2.3
Even if it is the CPU of Xoom's CPU and Atrix slightly different
But I believe the difference is not large
So, I think this is Motorola's responsibility
Atrix will be my last one Motorola mobile phone

Same as me
In my opinion one of Motorola's core users should play with the user of the machine
Is not just used to use as a phone user
Play with the user of the machine will continue to buy new phone
But the use of mobile phone users will not
They have changed the frequency of the new mobile phone often low
And when they buy a new phone just to see the appearance of good or bad
Motorola to give up the core users of the playing machines
Just taking to one of my friends about Motorola.
Never again buying Motorola.

It's pretty simple, if you want constant updates then get a Nexus phone.
The fact that no Tegra 2 phone has ICS would suggest that the problem lies with nvidia. Even the Galaxy s2 variants that use Tegra 2 don't have ICS yet. Before buying my next phone, I'll make sure it can be unlocked and it doesn't use nvidia. Motorola should actually get better with the releases since its now owned by Google.
me too am also buying the next nexus phone(maybe it will be motorola no one knows)??
+1
My next phone will be a Nexus or Samsung Galaxy S4.
No more Motorola phones. If my Atrix is dead before my contract ends, I am gonna get a Galaxy S3.

Because it's not the same Tegra 2.
I really thought Google would come up with some sort of solution to fragmentation at this years I/O, but they didn't, and I was a little dissapointed.
Instead, they released the new OS early, and are giving it to people with nexus devices first (and the Xoom for whatever reason). And I think they are doing it this way as a way to make consumers switch over to nexus devices out of anger and dissapointment, and to force other phone manufacturers hands at making their versions of the operating system simpler, so their customers get the updates quicker.
The reason why people get the new updates so late is because every other manufacturer has to add their "skin" over the OS, and that takes time and a lot of testing, and that is what Google is trying to stop

Bureaucratic development and testing procedures.
I pledged never again to buy a Motorola product after this. When the Atrix first came out, I loved it. Then the locked bootloader eventually killed development. I wish I could count how many devs abandoned the first dual core phone because of the bootloader. Design gears and dagr8 come to mind.
Unfortunately, my girlfriend is stuck with her Atrix until january, and I'm getting her the Xperia Ion. Sad that I'm choosing Sony over Motorola, but they forced us in that direction.

Will the N4 processor stop being supported like the one GN did?

I'm thinking of buying the nexus 4, I'll be upgrading from the Galaxy Nexus, now my question is, I know the N4 wont be supported by Google in the near future and one of the reasons Google gave to stop supporting the GN was the OMAP processor issue (being closed sourced and all)
So, since I'm not american I can't buy directly from the Google Play Store a phone and there is a good price for the N4 in amazon, I'm wondering if the n4 processor will suffer the fate of its older brother? When Google drops support for the n4, will we be able to compile newer kernels? I understand the GN is stuck on 3.0.10 or something while the rest is somewhere 3.4

I wonder because the OMAP processor used proprietary technology, I don't know about the N4
N4 has a good snapdragon s4 processor. So I'll doubt it'll be dropped, and even if it is, we'll still have custom ROM support. Although if I were you @op I would go and buy an n5.

Yeah, Google could have just told us all that its because of TI, even I find the 18 month window reason ridiculous. I don't see why they would drop support for such a good device when the RAM requirements in KitKat have been reduced to 512MB.

And the Galaxy nexus has 1GB ram witch it can fully handle kitkat (looking at roms)
I'm actually using KitKat on my GN, all bugs have been fixed but they can't compile 3.4 kernels because of the TI OMAP dropped support issue, I think this will be an issue in the long run with future versions of android, I know they'll try to work around it to fix the issues. I'm running kitkat with a 3.0.10 kernel and its running beautiful but I'm not sure if we are taking all the advantages of the 3.4 kernel.
Oh I would love to buy an N5 @Lt.Win but I can only buy through amazon and the price there is ridiculously expensive, around 500$ when in the google play store is only 350$ and in my country we can't buy phones on the google store, not even through proxys or VPN, and I wouldn't ever use my CC on a VPN or a proxy. So, since the N4 its 350$ on amazon it will have to do, It's still a great phone I think.
I want to delete this reply but i dont know how
Yes, the N4 is a great device. Sad to hear you can only buy from amazon. Isn't there an eBay of your country? If not, have you tried checking eBay.com? I've seen quite a few sellers who ship internationally, and usually around the same price as Play Store. Do check there and try your luck. If not, then yes, you can always buy an N4.
Oh, and I think it is quite possible to back-port important / useful features of the 3.4 Kernel to 3.0.x, since it is 3.x.x, and not some old GB Kernel. So in that way you may be able to hold on to it for a year or so, maybe. Anyways, good luck on finding the phone(s)!

I think 64bit apps will take time to mature so I don't see the benefit of it now. Plus most nexus won't have expandable storage and that to me is more important as I will be using the tablet for a lot of gaming and need as much storage as I can add. After all that is why I bought the shield tablet.

I contacted Nvidia Customer support and they agreed that the corner cracks are a legitimate problem. They offered to replace my device now, or in the near future, after corrective action has been implemented. I chose the later.
Instead of returning your device to GameStop, have you considered contacting Nvidia directly, and getting a replacement unit?

I have considered that, but until i know the cracking issue has been corrected i dont want a newer device. I dont want this to be another xbox 360 RROD were i had to replace my device 4 times in one year because they hadnt corrected the real issue. it was a real hassle being without our device for many weeks. Wondering if its even worth it or maybe i should just return it, get credit and purchase the nexus 9. The only thing thats holding me back is nexus devices dont normally have microsd slots, nvidia exclusive games and the nvdia controller is awesome.

I contacted Nvidia about replacing my Shield Tablet because of a recently developing hairline crack on one corner. Following is their response:
"At this time we are still investigating the root cause of the hairline cracks.
If you wish an immediate replacement we will accommodate you but please be aware that there may be a small chance that your replacement unit may also crack. Otherwise, you can wait until we better understand and mitigate the underlying issue. As this is cosmetic there should be no impact on performance or functionality.
Please reply and let us know which option you would prefer. If you choose to wait, we will contact you when we believe we have a definitive fix."
I have no regrets about getting the Shield Tablet. I'd like the 64-bit one because emulator performance will be improved, however no SD slot effectively means the Shield Tablet will be the best tablet for me for quite some time yet (and I appreciate a lot of other stuff like the controller and stylus too).
so is it confirmed that the nexus 9 uses the 64-bit denver cores? i think the mention of dual-core indicates this as the other K1 iteration was quad-core?

Didn't the First Nexus 7 have a tegra chip & so did the HTC one X - Both of them ran like ****.
I'm not impressed with the fact they are using Tegra chips - the HTC One X was a nightmare to root & rom due to the tegra chip.
Poor show google.
If you take into account that these are custom made, not just standard arm processors that they used from previous version.
Basically, these K1 Denver chips are like Apples A8 Chips.
This won't be the same as the Tegra 3/4.
The shield tablet is very easy to root with towel root! Btw with the devs that are going to be here it's going to be a piece of cake. Have some faith!

I am keen to try it first hand though. I had a Tegra 2 device and a Tegra 3 (that was the nexus 7) and both were disappointing
Plus, Tegra is quite closed source. So maybe don't expect any miracle hacks
One thing though, supposedly NVIDIA have really lifted with their mobile SOCs, the Tegra4 was decent. I see this is both HTC and NVIDIA getting back into the Android market (well HTC into the tablet) and this could be risky. Because since the Tegra2 and 3 were a flop, all vendors allmost went with QUALCOMM last year and this year

Same as I feel,SD slot really is a deal breaker...
Plus, with the 399 price point I can buy a full set of Shield Tablet+Controller+Case
But I'm still willing to buy Nexus 9 if it had a sd slot
By the way this is a bit off topic but how is Shield Tablet's screen quality?
I'm considering to buy it but I read some reviews said its screen is good but the color saturation is just average
For all you obsessed with tests and benchmarks.
Hey nerds, enjoy!
To be fair first impressions was not that great! And has a horrible yellow tinge to the white
