Wondering if anybody feels that this flashing roms thing got annoying and at some point you realize al you do is flash romsinstead of using your phone for serious matters? Do not flame, I like flashing roms too, I was just feeling may be at some point it is no fun anymore? i'd like to see what you guys think. Share your thoughts
Really phone after phone I only do is flash Rom restore data, settings etc.mostly the phone remains unexplored.I think my phones run a Rom maximum for 3 days and minimum for few hours.it's really useless once you get a good get a good Rom,but one keeps on flashing I don't know what we achieve.but may be we do to kill time.

I, for a period of time, was flashing approx 1-2 roms per day on my HTC Sensation. Before I went to work I would have a look what for something new and if it wasn't doing it for me, (or if I was bored) would flash another when I got home. Since getting the S3 though have only flashed 4 different roms, mainly due to the fact that I am happy with Omega. Damn you Omega Team for stopping my flashing addiction!

What I mean is if you're frantically flashing roms trying to find one that fixes xxx issue, then its annoying. If you are being adventurous for more functionality or for a just for a change, its always fun.
As long as you freeze/uninstall the useless crap, stock ROMs run great since the SGS2. So, I haven't bothered with custom ROMs since SGS1. Most of the flashing nowadays is trying out the various kernels and messing with my init.d file.
You're right though, I've actually spent more time using the phone than constantly messing with the settings... not necessarily a bad thing.

With the gs3, I think the stock rom is just perfect. Devs are good but there always is some issue which makes them post an update every week. I am new though, maybe I am not the right person to talk about this
This is exactly why a little over a year ago I went from the original Galaxy S to iPhone 4. I was trying everything out, it became almost like an addiction. Yeah, that sounds a bit stupid, but I really felt it was like addiction.
I spent hours every night flashing, restoring, flashing and again restoring. I hardly got the phone set up the way I liked it before I flashed again. It started to feel like I was just flashing ROMs all the time and not really using my phone for anything else. So I got really exhausted in the end and thought I'd try iOS - a platform notorious for its limitations when it comes to customizations.
I think the year I spent with my iPhone did me good. I realized that it's more valuable (for me) to set up the phone, tweak the things that need tweaking and then just USE it, with akin to a "If it ain't broken, don't fix it" attitude.
I often told friends and relatives when they asked for my opinion about the iPhone that it was the most reliable phone I have ever used. I could always rely on it to do the stuff I needed it to do when I needed it. Later on I started to reflect over this and came to the conclusion that the phone or the OS really isn't more reliable than Android at all. Android was unreliable for me because I was always messing with it. It was me, not the phone or the OS.
So now I have given my iPhone to the wifey and have my SGS III, and sure I have tried ROMs, I have tried 5 or 6 of them I think. Now I have found one that I really like, it looks nice, it does what I want it to do, battery seems fine, I really have no complaints. Now I just have to steer clear of the "grass is greener on the other side" mentality.
With that said, I today saw that nitr8 is bringing his Insanity ROM to the SGS III, and Insanity was one of my favorite ROMs on my SGS1, so yeah I'm tempted to try it, and I probably will do that at some point. But I don't feel like I have to, because the ROM I have now and the way I have set it up really works for me.
I'm just hoping the feeling will last this time... :silly:
Its just all about the little tweaks.
I did that with the OG touch diamond and the holy grail of Rom flashing, the HD2. Now that I'm alittle older and wiser since then, I scaled back a lot with the S3 and would only go as far as rooting the stock Rom, flash a kernel or radio, and editing build.prop.....for now, at least
I was a junkie with my HTC hero and hd2, I got only s2 because of how great many roms in would flash.. With s3 i have only flashed it once... And I'm happy.. All though I'm addicted to always check xda for updates everytime I get a chance..
The one rom i flashed was cm9 0701 experimental and it's been treating me great. Don't use all features of touchwiz and to be honest it feels more stable and smooth with a experimental build of cm9 then it ever did with touchwiz lol.
My addiction is over finally

I do flash lots of ROMs, but I am quite glad with Samsung's stock ROMs (works for me, as long as I can keep root between flashes).
I flash a new ROM everytime a ROM with a higher CL # is released.
Addicted to flashing !!
from my htc incredible s, htc one x , acer a500 iconia tab and now my samsung galaxy s 3 i have always flashed my phones from first day of purchase.
the browsing through xda became a regular thing for me, looking for that rom that catches my attention, i always look for stable, fast and nice themed roms with tweaks, at some point i was flashing my phones 2 to 4 times a day lol
i dont know why but it was a sense of exploring, being able to rip a stock out and making it into something that is more for you.
my wife obviously dont understand so she gets the ****s when i purchase a brand new phone and straight away mod the **** out of it lol
the way i see it, purchasing a smartphone comes stock which is restricting and customizing it is limited !!
so flashing a custom rom is opening it up to change things to your preference.
i absolutely hate iphones, they are dull and so restricted and basically all the same, you know one iphone u know em all.
Android rocks and iphones can burn like they do !!!

Go into the US galaxy s III forums and tell them you're tired of flashing roms..see the reaction you get. LMAO I'm sure any one of them would kill to have as many choices as we have
Thats why my SIII and most of Android is more like a toy rather than a tool for me... i always tinker my phone when i have nothing to do and always have iPhone as backup when im not doing it right.

I was wondering if someone could lay out a few of the benefits of flashing to Cyanogen versus stock (rooted). I have a lot on my phone and just wanted to see if it would be worth the time to switch and get everything setup again.
I looked around and didn't see any nice list of features/benefits that would be gained with Cyanogen.
I do love the fact that it is open source and community supported. That's fantastic.
Hope this isn't flamebait...
Stable (unless you're on a nightly)
Great codec support
Bluetooth profiles (HID being a top add)
It's the latest Android version in all its un-bloated glory
Update frequency is high
I'm sure I'm forgetting other things but its not limited to that.
I'm a Sense fan myself but CyanogenMod is worth the install. You owe it to yourself to check it out.
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/19985-cm7-v-sense-what-you-lose-vs-what-you-gain/
I ran CM7 for about a month and now am running the stock rooted OTA Gingerbread. It may just be ADW launcher but CM 7 is slow and laggy compared to stock gingersense. I like others had major issues with getting GPS stable and working. I do miss some of the mods but over all i'm happier on a sense based rom.
For me battery life. Ive tried every sense rom there is and im yet to find one with better battery life. And for me its not anywhere near slow or laggy. I dont really see myself ever going back to a sense rom, definitely not the one Sprint just pushed out.

Honestly, check it out for yourself. You don't need to lose anything, nandroid backup your current setup and install CM7. You can play around with it for a while and see if it's for you and if not you can just restore your backup. Many people on here have 2 or 3 roms backed up and switch between them. My suggestion would be to read all the links in my sig, they should answer any questions you might have.
i ran it so i could connect my wii remote and play snes9x...there is something sense cant do!!!
netflix, googletalk video chat. way better keyboard. i miss a couple things about sense so i just bought launcher pro and use that for my facebook and agenda widgets. other than that sense roms are garbage to me. CM7 is great and once all the stupid little bugs get worked out it's going to be awesome.
i'd suggest flashing the roms with armon 2.3 recovery and sticking to the stable versions of cm7. i just had to start from scratch cause a nightly a while back through my phone for a loop.
give the latest stable a shot for a week and i bet you really like it.

Aosp. That's why I like it.
* CyanogenMod (advanced) settings. You can tweak it to perform just how you like it.
* Screen on/off animations
* Color rendering (to reduce screen power use)
* Regular updates
* Gingerbread well before sense roms. Even running 2.3.4 like me
* Developments are quickly included (ex: sd card read ahead value to increase read speed)
Just do a backup of your current system, flash cyanogen, play around and if you don't like it, just restore back to your original.
I was on CM7 for the past month and @ first I was in love.
Benefits:
Advanced bluetooth support (Wimote for my emulators)
Full Screen mirroring HDMI (Once again for emulators)
Speed increase (This didn't last long)
On/Off screen animations (Impressed the friends and relatives)
Cool Wallpapers
But, after awhile the bugs really started to get annoying
Negatives (YMMV)
Bugs (From random FC's, gmail stop syncing for no reason, wimax not wanting to stop without a restart plus other annoying stuff.
Speed (Eventually CM7 started to move slowly to a point where it felt like a chore to deal with my phone)
Well, Friday was the last draw when my sister's texts were not showing up on my phone. So, I flashed the new Sprint GB update and I am in love with my phone all over again. Even with the bloatware my phone is running silky smooth and I am experiencing no bugs. Plus for some reason my battery life has improved too. I was using Tiamat with SBC on CM7. Battery life become horrendous on CM7 and yes I did calibrate my battery.
When it's all said and done YMMV. The best way to find out is to NANDROID Backup and flash the rom yourself. You might be greeted to a whole new world of flashing greatness.

Nice that someone actually weighs the pro's and cons as op obviously needed. There is a lot of hating going on here at XDA, All devs should support each other, not bash each other. I know I Haven't been a member on here long, but flashing roms has been a hobby for a while, I just wasn't a full blown flashaholic. Anyway, there are a lot of roms to choose from and though I develop my own, I still flash everyone elses to enjoy the experience, and learn. Everyone has the right to believe what they will, but there is a line between a thought, and posting. If some of these people where two feet away from each other, there wouldn't be all of this garbage talk. I thought XDA was all about exactly that, giving the people a choice as to what software to run, helpful guides and tips, a community, or actually a culture, if you will. Anyway, sorry.....Flash Away....

it's impossible for something to be perfect and without having a single issue. but the rom with the least issues in my opinion would be Virtuous Unity, a great rom developed by the hardworking Virtuous team. that rom is the closest you can get to perfect. try it.

What is it that you are wanting out of a rom? Different people like different things, and while some like vu (myself included), others want a more vanilla Android experience. Which would point closer to cm.

Depends on your preference. I like sense and the one nearest to perfect for me is Virtuous Unity. Like saranhai said nothing is perfect nothing will be. The stock rom that comes with mytouch is not perfect at all. Some roms have a tad little bit of lag some just a little bit more. Something about every rom is different. Like eqjunkie829 said. Easy. CM7.
Nothing is more stable and more battery efficient than CM7.
Can't go wrong.
Hmmmm, without a single issue?
I don't think such an animal exists in our modern world...
From my experience, using the stock sense that came with the phone had by far far far more issues than cm6, 7 and 7.1- fc almost every phone conversation followed by signal loss, flaky wifi, lots of problems with the (nice) automatic profile switching etc.
So whatever you install, you're probably going to be "issuewise" much better than stock. Perhaps you'll have to sweat a little more to make it look as neat as sense, though.

Try Cyanogen mod (CM7). Like a few suggested!
All my cam apps work great on the stable version.
Battery life is probably the best of all the ROMs because of its simplicity.
This ROM is all about functionality
Although I use MIUI. Which also has great battery life (1day 6hrs) it has its quirks with some camera apps. I just wanted a sleeker user interface
I use a simple cam app anyways and I love the customization. My main goal for rom was battery life, & speed ( i was on 2.2 and it was very laggy out of the box) I just got my phone 2 months ago.
My last smart phone was an htc fuze lol and my previous phone was a simple nokia bar phone.
So I was totally oblivious to rooting prior to 2 months ago.
cyanogen
well I'm using cyanogen 7 stable version and I don't have any issue
running TDJ 2.2.0 just to switch things up a little bit
10+ hours and just now hitting 50%, so far so good
TDJ's port of that rom works wonders
Virtuous Unity for me, never one single issue, great performance, features, speed, battery life.

Virtuous unity was ok, not perfect by any means. It was a heavy rom, some times leggy and had some random FC's I never got in other roms. For a more stock sense/espresso hybrid (with out the stupid blocky apps), royal glacier has to be the most stable rom I have tried. I am currently running Faux's nexus rom and I love it so far, no issues. So if your into AOSP stuff, I would look into that.
Faux nexus 1.3.1
So I have been using faux's nexus 1.3.1 ROM for about a week now, I calibrated the battery right after I flashed it using the battery calibration app, and the battery life is amazing. It lasted 1 day 5 hours according to my battery stats right after I calibrated. Also it has been one of the most stable ROMs I have used besides royalglacier. No FC's or random reboots. One thing I have learned, which may be a total noob thing but whatever, is if you are going from sense to AOSP, you cannot restore any data after you flash your rom. You have to use titanium backup or the mybackup pro app to get your apps, SMS, call logs and the likes back. It might be common sense but i never knew that and it kept me away from aosp roms for a long time!
I'm talking to everyone who's been reading the ICS threads and progress that's being made to our ICS roms, but has not made the leap for whatever reason.
I'm speaking to you because I was you, at least until Friday when I finally decided to make the move to Neobuddy's Euphoria RC1 rom.
I quietly followed and read every single thread in the development section relating to our ICS progress, but was constantly reading about the problems with battery life and GPS difficulties.
I decided that after weeks of watching and waiting, I would take the plunge and report about my first 24 hours. I did not want to leave out details, so I took screen shots to show everyone who was like me before, standing on the sidelines, waiting for some magical "Ah ha" moment. Hopefully this will give you confidence in your decision and I can help you out along the way.
To start with, I have one of the first generations of our Vibrant (purchased the month it came out). I also purchased a Epic 4G battery from here about 4 months ago and have been using Bionix 1.3.2 and Deranged9 for as long as I can remember. When I flashed Euphoria, I had an initial problem with the installation where it got hung up at the boot screen (normal for coming from 2.2 roms) and it should also be mentioned that I DID NOT flash a GB Bootloader and had no problems with my recovery or rainbows.
The flash was pretty quick, even with having to reflash the rom twice. Once flashed, everything was pretty smooth from that point forward. I charged my phone up to 100% and calibrated it using the V6 supercharger script . After doing that, I woke up in the morning (I sleep in late on the weekend) and preceded to not only test my phone (GPS, different apps, change settings) but to use it normally (make calls, connect to my car's stereo Bluetooth connection to play music, etc.). The phone was the fastest it had ever been and everything worked as if I was still on my clutch Bionix rom.
The best part about my entire experience was that not only was everything working, but my battery life was out of this world good. I am not exaggerating by any means, and I've included screen shots to quantify my experience. I could not believe that not only did my GPS work after deep sleep (I tested it on multiple of occasions) but my battery was averaging about 2% loss an hour. The other icing on the cake was the fact that I was able to get the highest internet speeds using the stock modem (KB5 I believe).
I'm sorry for the literary diarrhea but I know that there are others like myself who are sitting on the sidelines, waiting for something to push them over the edge, and move onto an ICS based rom. The below is more specific information should you decide to follow what I did to a "T".
Rom: Neobuddy's Euphoria RC1 Rom
Modem: KB5
Kernel: ICS_Kissed_20120226.1157
Tweaks: Captivate GPS Fix
Battery: 1800mAH Samsung Epic 4G Battery

i was also on the fence for a good while. i was thinking, 'man, settling for ics just because it's ics isn't for me!' i assumed it was pretty much not usable. i flashed passion first, then euphoria, now i'm on zenwich. all three are about as good as they're gonna get without an official ics, and that's not a diss at all. all three roms i tried are very stable and fast. there's been a few hiccups (laggy app drawer, random force closes), but that's to be expected. and by no means do those things happen often. they've happened maybe three times. as far as battery, i have the 1800mah battery, and my battery life is average. i get about 12hr with moderate to heavy use, and any use less than that i can easily make it through the whole day without worrying about charging. i am outside most of my day though, so i do have brightness almost all the way up. i don't expect miracles with battery life and neither should anyone else. i say for those on the fence about ics, just try it. it's fun and new and mostly everything works without a hitch.

Hey man!! Long time no talk. Glad to see we're both rocking the same rom again. Deranged was great, but with this rom, it's on a whole new level. I can seriously get the same battery life but the speed is just outrageous. My only wish is that I could lock my home launcher (Apex Launcher) into memory. I have a decent amount of redraws but other than that, it's ridiculously fast.
I also have ICS on my tablet too (I have an HP Touchpad). I can put AOKTP on it, but I have been super happy with the work that dalingrin and CM9 have put out. I eventually will have to try it out, I just have been super happy with the progress they've made on it.
Out of curiosity, have you found any build prop tweaks that you've added to Euphoria? I want to change some things up, but not too sure what others have done.

I was on dr9 and I decided to switch to ICS 2 weeks ago. I swear I never want to come back again! First time ever I feel my phone is way superior than a freaking iPhone. Thanks to all devs, my once crappy phone becomes iPhone slayer.
P.s My GPS never works even on froyo 2.2 Would flashing that GPS fix solve my problem? I heard about hardware fix, what is it and where can I get it? Thanks

I just bought my first (used) android phone last week and after much deliberation decided to try the Vibrant because of the many custom ROMs available for it and it's widespread forum support from developers. I've flashed Passion, Euphoria, and Slim ICS over the last week (mainly just to try out a few ROMs and get the process of flashing down). They each have their own strengths and I recommend reading the threads in detail prior to flashing the ROM as some of them do have some common kinks that can be worked out with simple solutions. Either way thanks to all the developers for their hard work bringing ICS to this older (but not ancient yet) platform!
I did the same thing up until recently, just followed the ics threads but haven't used them.
I just took the jump Thursday, I'm actually pretty amazed at how well it all works too! I haven't even calibrated my battery yet and I'm still getting about the same battery life that I was on toxic 8 and fishman mod. I've been playing with passion and slim ics both are amazing roms. For those who havent at least tried ics this is the perfect time to do so,most have about equal battery life and great speed to go with it and are very stable.

are you running stock speeds or have you overclocked to 1.2ghz??
and im a bit concerned about how your battery usage shows 19% screen...
any comments on using slim for a barebone ICS experience over euphoria/passion?
i wish there was some sort of description as to what exactly the slimming of ICS entailed
I miss ics so much. Im on a galaxy s ii right now yes it's super fast and everything but I love ics passion so much. The battery lasted forever on that Rom and this phone can barely do 8 hrs. Also it was just so nice to have ics. Call this an overstatement but im seriously considering about going back to the vibrant because the sgsii has no ics yet.

Can someone tell me the Pros and Cons of switching from Eclair or Froyo to ICS? I am debating on doing it but don't know if its worth the hassle besides better battery life.

I would say half the day I had it was set to 1.2GHz and the rest of the day was at 1GHz. I can tell you that I used the heck out of the phone, and 19% of 25 + hours with screen on isn't too bad. Not to mention, I was talking on the phone for around 1.5-2 hours of that time as well.
If I really pushed it, I know I could easily get 12-14 hours with HEAVY usage. In all likelihood though, if you think about a normal work day or school day, you should have problem going an entire day with either of the ICS roms, especially with an 1800 mah battery.
I thought ICS was good untill I tried Kanged Kool Aid. This rom is just amazing. It works 110% and is really fast with no lag what so ever. Plus the battery life I'm gettin with the epic 4g 1800mAh battery is the best I ever had.

I usually get about 10 hours on AOKP and did so on Euphoria too with moderate usage.
No calls, maybe 3 maximum a day that lasted no more than 2 minutes each.
Texting is heavy, about a 1000 texts a day.
Games that are NOT too graphic dependent, such as Edge EX, Speedx 3D and Lane Splitter
and on WIFI the entire day.
Any suggestions? I'm using 2G instead of 3G since i do not have a data plan.
Brightness is about 5-10%

I DOOD IT!!
I am noob. I am ashamed. I am piggybacking:
I love my Vibrant. I got tired of feeling left behind on updates, so I became interested in rooting and flashing my phone. After scouring these forums for a week, I had a mental list of problems that might pop up during the process. Many other sites published pros and cons of rooting -- the former outweighing the latter. What really pushed my decision to do something, was the headline, "Galaxy S III with Ice Cream Sandwich due out around April." The warranty was up; I felt assured that I could always restore; why not try opening the phone's potential?! Using two computers and a printed list of instructions, I took the plunge. I followed the Noob Guide and a video from Eddie1west, I now have a fully-functioning, up-to-date Virbrant that I am in love with all over again.
The first issue was lack of drivers on the computer: fixed. My eyes rolled, but I pressed on. Second came the boot-loop issues when installing both CM7 and ICS Passion. I cringed, but kept at it -- removing the battery and reinstalling one time each did the trick. I can't report any major deficiencies, but I'm still playing with the phone. I anticipate problems to arise, but I can accept them knowing that I have a wealth of knowledge to rely on -- even from other noobs like me.
I sincerely appreciate the amazing amount of effort and passion these developers have. Now where's that elusive "thanks" button...
it's always nice to get some user-experience posts about going to a ROM like this... I haven't taken the ICS plunge, but it's on my list of things to do when time permits.
Maybe I'll get to it this week

I'm telling you man, with all my sincerity, this rom's battery life, gps and everything is just as stable as any 2.2 rom. I am now on my 3rd full day and my battery is still averaging crazy idle power usage (I don't talk on my cell while at work) and my gps had the best locks I've ever gotten ( I just walked my dog while testing it) with this phone.
I feel like I held on for so long, being so scared of what would happen to my phone if I flashed it. I was so scared about the mute/unmute bug, but guess what....I've had countless calls and not one person has said anything about my voice quality.
My suggestion is to go for it, worst case scenario, you ODIN to 2.1 and then restore your original backup. No harm, no foul....and no GB bootloaders.
Ive recently downgraded back to CM7 GB. ICS just has too many bugs and it seems im the only one who seems to think its "slow" or jerky at times. I encourage you if you just want your phone to work and be as fast as it can be to go back to CM7. It seems everyone keeps saying ICS is ultra fast and ultra smooth. In my experiences, ICS just wasnt made for the SGS1, the hardware just isnt powerful enough, heck even the Galaxy Nexus looked a tad slow on ICS compared to how fast it is on JB.
I dont think CM10 will be that much different from CM9. Im looking into getting an S3 when they drop the price a little bit, (£500!!!! I can get a decent laptop for that price)
I honestly disagree. I do feel Slim ICS is as fast, as any other 2.3 rom i've tried, with the added bonus of slightly improved responsiveness. This is my personal experience, of course.
And i also think it's not about the hardware. If it was, the iphone wouldn't be such a success. But this is a loaded statement and not really worth going over. I'm just glad everyone has a favourite flavour they can use
Ya really think dat ugly'n'slow CM7 is better dan ICS?
There are trillions of possible combinations of apps and settings, did you do a clean install (wipe everything)?
A clean ICS beats a clean 2.3 ROM.

Yeah its definitely useable. but maybe its just me, I feel like sometimes it will run flawless then sometimes it will feel laggy and slow, regarding iOS, its alot better coded than Android (im going to get hate for taht, but its true, you can run obsolete processors with iOS and still get it to work flawlesly since its so closely ccontrolled and optimised) Its the same with Windows Phone 7. If theres anyone who hasnt tried using Wp7, I encourage you to do so, my next phone will hopefully be the SGS3, but with every single Android phone regardless of specs, sometimes theres a delay with some things, i.e. the gallery. Its not so much lag anymore, just a delay between pressing the app icon and it actually loading. On windows phone, you press the app, BOOM, instantly its there. But JellyBean and "project Butter" is a step in the right direction. (And it looks alot cooler)
is here any happy user of MIUI v4 on SGS?

I got back to gingerbread although I liked the neat GUI of ICS and tested almost every variant of it except Slim ICS because it lacked support for Arabic based languages (my native language is Pashto). Another thing for me was the lack of feature of copying contacts to SIM which is crucial for me. Anyway I'm waiting if someone could include that feature, then certainly I will get back to ICS or JB.
ICS is good but the SGS just doesn't get the most of it, you can say what you want but if you think you're getting the full ICS experience on this phone you are sadly mistaken..
Honestly I don't blame the OP downgrading to GB, the sgs is what 2-3 years old now? If you want to run the latest software it might pay to start thinking about upgrading.

For me,
Slim ICS>Froyo 2.2.1 (especially stock ZSJPK)>Any Gingerbread rom
Why? The answer is ram. The notion of free ram being wasted ram is just silly. When ram is full, the phone has to constantly close and reopen background processes, causing a decrease in smoothness.
That's why Froyo 2.2.1 was the best, because it had the most least ram consumption. However, slim ICS had that ridiculously big ram configuration, which put it on par with 2.2.1. But it ranks higher because it is ICS and has more features.
Hmm i downgraded to froyo a while ago and found it heaps laggier than ICS , JB is much better than ICS imo now.

What a strange thread. I've been on a load of different ICS Roms, I've tried almost all of them and I've found 90% of them faster than stock Gingerbread/Froyo.
Right now I've been on CM10 Alpha (JB) for two days and my SGS feels like a new phone again. It's not perfect and 100% reliable, but it's pretty good for an alpha build.
im sorry. what is gingerbread/froyo? never heard of that.
it depends on personal preference to be honest.

Im not a developer, but the ram being full is not always bad. It just depends on how the Os uses it. I agree if you are constantly clearing and caching the ram as u open apps, you will lose smoothness but, for instance, my version of nix pre caches the majority of ram in advance for various applications to use. In essence insuring there is enough ram available for gui apps. Obviously if you are overall limited on ram though it will slow things down.
I have never felt like the ics ports were sluggish, just bit battery heavy, and they seem to run hot. That being said GB is the best compromise for me. Plus there is so much more hacking done for GB.

Hey, i've been willing to try stock android for a while on my G2, but I've never been so adventurous. I left that for my Nexus 7.
I do have knowledge about the benefits and the nice add-ons that Paranoid, CM and etc brings, but I've been reluctant to make the change.
When I bought this phone months ago, I've quickly went into XDA to check the Original Androids, even before using the G2.
Every ROM I found back then had some "serious" flaw, like messed up camera (ported from N5), no quick-remote, bad battery life et al. So I just went on using the Stock G2 Android and guess what.. it's pretty nice. Fast and full of features.
I'm pretty comfortable with the CloudyG3 ROM right now, but I want to try something new.
Since my previous adventures with flashing ROM merrily were much time consuming, and I need this phone on working order 24/7, I'd like to hear your opinion regarding to changing from the Stock Android to a AOSP, CM Android. What do I lose? Does the quick remote still works? Is the camera as good as stock? Does the device gets faster or more battery efficient? What are the trade-offs?
Thanks!

Greetings, the trade offs from my experience of using Paranoid Android 4.4.4(based of cyanogenmod) is the loss of quick remote, slight difference in camera quality of using the Google camera, the quality using the Google camera is good but not great, it's like the app is reprogramming the true image quality of the lg g2 and programming it to shoot at 8 megapixels, I myself personally is still trying to find an app out there that performs good with my infared emitter on the g2, no luck, but simply put, you lose 90% if not 100% of the features that was put into the g2 when you flash a custom rom.
Besides the trade offs I mentioned, the battery life is performing very well for me
I really hope I helped you in your decision

UPDATE: a new tradeoff from what I've experienced is the sound quality on Paranoid Android, it sounds very grainy, for example it sounds like a person talking loud with a mic, this is a software issue with Paranoid Android, I personally did not like that, so I returned to Stock and flashed a different ROM, this ROM is called "Mahdi", and the sound quality sounds so much better and clear, I can hear people clearly on the other line when I speak with them, I didn't get this experience with Paranoid Android, Paranoid Android sound quality when listening to the person on the other line sounds muffled, I find myself having to ask them to repeat what they've said.
Long Story Short: Paranoid Android's audio is not good and Mahdi ROM's is, so if you don't want to deal with this software issue with the audio, give " Mahdi ROM" a try.[emoji4][emoji4]

I came to this phone from a Nexus 4. Same as you I constantly toyed with that phone. I flashed Paranoid Android and Cyanogenmod both on this phone. I was so sorry I did. They just can not hold up to the stability of a solid stock rom. I presently am using Cloudyfa Cloudy Stock. Works great and since I'm not using ART presently I have a lot of Xposed running to customize and tweak the stock rom. Cloudyfa's Cloudy G3 rom is great too.
Tradeoffs.....
1) Not quite as stable.
2) Camera quality can not even compare to Xdabbebs mod which works best on Stock.
3) Missing features (that you may or may not use)
4) Really no reason to do it....
Good luck!

Yeah... I'm running Mahdi ROM here and.. well, it feels awkward. It feels like I'm losing, missing something. It is butter smooth, sure, but the stock ROM was also this. It doesn't have the copy/paste cache too, which I liked a lot. Camera quality is shameful, and from a device that commonly received random praises about photo quality from friends. I've found a mod that enabled QuickRemote back, but I couldn't stand using the G2 like that anymore, unfortunately.
Funny that I always used my Moto Atrix 4G, Galaxy S3 (these two works till today, and are incredibly fast!) and Nexus 7 with CyanogenMod and Paranoid, but it just feels wrong on the G2. LG surely did a great job there. I'm back to my G3 ROM, with a comfy, cozy, homey feel.
I won't go out in the wild anymore lol. (Maybe when the Nexus 7 is up and running again)
I came from a Nexus 4 aswell, and I had a Nexus 7v2 too, so like you I'm used to the stock feeling of Android.
However, I don't find AOSP based Roms for the LG G2 to give out the same performance they give on Nexus devices.
It feels out of place, like something is missing.
After almost regreting trading my Nexus 4 for the LG G2, I found Cloudy G3 Rom and I've been happy since then. It's a great Rom, very stable, battery life is good and you keep all the G2 stock features such as Knock Code.
Personaly I think it is the best Rom for this device so far.
If you want the remote on a custom ROM, you can have it, just follow the guide in this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2596104
