I've read a few reviews of the Xoom and now the Transformer that mention issues playing back 720p or higher HD video. Stuttering, etc. Is there any truth to this? Flash HD video I know stutters but honestly it skips on my Core2Duo PC. I'm just referring to standard video files I might load from my microSD card.
Thanks in advance.
Just got mine today.
I put a 720p MKV of a tv show and used RockPlayer.
It was not pretty in either hardware or software decode mode.
You have to check that profile those HD videos are using.
Tegra 2 can decode 720p high and 1080p baseline or main (not sure here), the problem is that Honeycomb is not fully optimized yet to use all Tegra 2 acceleration features.
I think that if you re-encode those HD videos to baseline profile, they should run smooth.
There will be an upgrade from Adobe for flash to hardware accelerate 720p videos on these mobile SoC, but it needs Honeycomb 3.1, it's still not available yet.
So is the problem honeycomb or is it the Tegra 2? I can live with it being Honeycomb but I don't want to buy weak hardware.
Supposedly, MoboPlayer and VitalPlayer are better than RockPlayer.
Have you guys tried HD videos using either?

it's honeycomb.
Can you guys run xda developers site using the stock browser? Go to the forums section and see if it scrolls without lag.
Thanks

This. Mobo Player runs 720p mkv files with subs flawlessly. Now if only I could customize the bottom dock to go away.

Which version do we use?
Hi Jocelyn,
I don't know what mkv files you are trying to play, but either in software or hardware mode they suck for me. I watch Naruto Anime and its horrible using moboplayer. I don't discredit moboplayer devs as they have come up with the only player on the android market that works for most files, but mob do not work smoothly. As for other file types, they work flawlessly. I have converted StarTrek and DespicableMe and they play beautifully without lag or skipping.

Tegra 2 is suppose to use ARM V7 VFPv3 (right?).
Its not a honeycomb issue. Its a tegra 2 issue and it is not a software issue its hardware. H.264 does not work good or at all. You have to use MPEG4. I used a 720p video that plays great on my ipad 2 and had to convert to mpeg4. I tried to get good quality from MPEG4 and it increased the file size from 5.6 to 9 gigs. I swore to never buy a tegra 2 device again after testing other tegra 2 tablet & phone but I keep getting sucked back in by the hype. I hate apple but I have nothing but good things to say about the ipad 2. Everything just works and its way way faster.

And this one plays without stuttering and lag? What's the bitrate? Almost all of the series I have are in 720p with [email protected] and bitrate around 4mbps. Most of them aren't even downloadable at 1080p so I don't mind if these 720p are just working fine.

This is what confuses me, I keep hearing it's honeycomb (and hence s/w issue which should be fixable by s/w udpate) and then I hear it's Tegra 2 issue (and hence h/w issue which can only be fixed with Tegra 3 device).
If it is Tegra 2 issue, I am leaning towards canceling my order and waiting for Tegra3. I have a lot of videos which are H264 720p Hi profile that I was hoping to watch on the TF.
I currently have a SGT which will tide me over....
What I would like is some confirmation that is indeed h/w issue....
KG
Is there a good Handbrake profile available for the Transformer?
Its a shame that the Archos 101 plays 720p mkvs just fine and the tegra 2 sucks at it, hope this will be fixed soon!
btw. here is a preset for Handbrake, rename to .plist:
This is a duplicate thread to this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1053125
Another user posted a Handbrake profile in that thread to get your mp4/mkv to play smoothly on the stock Honeycomb build (assuming it's software related). The only downside to this profile is that it will double your file size since it's baseline and uses less compression.
As for the hardware vs software issue, we should know soon assuming Google releases HC 3.1 at the Google I/O conference May 10th.
Hey guys,
So they boast about the 1080p playback on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, however I haven't had much luck with this. I tried putting on two different 720p video files on and both of them have sub-par playback.
One of them is an MP4 with h.264 and it plays okay on the default video (gallery) player but theres a bit of a stutter and doesn't play extremely well.
The other is an h.264 MKV and that doesn't even play audio in certain cases and the video doesn't play well at all under the default gallery application.
I tried three other media players - rock media player, Vplayer, and doubletwist and none of them play it any better. I find it sort of strange that it's having trouble handling these sorts of files. I can maybe understand the MKV file but the standard MP4 file is a little concerning
I find Vital Player performs better than the ones you have already mentioned. QQplayer is ok sometimes too and I've heard people talking about drobo player but I have not tried yet.
VitalPlayer played my mp4 a little better almost perfect with hardware decoding, however the mkv was still problematic :-/
Try:
MoboPlayer
and
MoboPlayer Codec for ARMV7VFP3
It bring in Tegra 2 Support not yet optimized but still pretty good.
Also if you have rooted your tab take your CPU off interactive (Default and horrible) and put it on Performance or OnDemand.

It's not a software flaw , it'tegra limitation to playback high profiles encoded files. Tegra allow hardware decoding of main profile Encode file only.

I think he's saying that altering your CPU probably wont make much of a difference since it's the lack of GPU hardware decoding for high profile encoded videos that's likely causing any kind of stuttering. In short, it's not your CPU's fault or Honeycomb's fault, it's your GPU's fault.

Interesting, I find it odd though that when selecting hardware in certain players it does play better. But when selecting software in some players it plays better than other players hardware. It just seems like some sort of issue that isn't really making much sense.
Yeah, moboplayer wasn't any better either :-/
It is Tegra limitation and it is a problem for ALL Tegra 2 based tablets.
Go to any forum Xoom, Transformer, Adam Ink... i is general issue.
If one wants to play movies (and do other "super advanced stuff") one should have buy a previus generation tablet like Galaxy Tab 7" or Archos, etc.
Some of us still hope that retail GT 10.1 will come in with Exynos CPU instead of Tegra. If not it, than quite a lot of phones will be more powerfull than Tegra 2 tablet computers.
+ none of new tabs is divix certified like some of the old ones were :-(
I wonder how will TouchPad perform in that matter?
If GT 10.1 is indeed Tegra 2 based I am in trouble.
Watching movies (in bed) is quite important to me.
I will either wait for 10" HTC or Amazon tablet (gossip goes it will have Kal-El inside) or I'll just get iPad 2 (seems to be more capable in that regard than new Android tablets).

I have the iPad2 and Asus Transformer which uses the Tegra 2. My iPad 2 is not jailbroken and it surpasses the Asus Transformer for video playback. My iPad2 plays High Profile 720p MP4 with the stock player, and with AVPlayerHD from the App Store, I can play High Profile 720p MKV and it will support embedded subtitles along with xvid/divx avi formats.
The Transformer chokes on anything High Profile. Sure you can use Moboplayer or Vital Player as they support subtitles, but they only support external subtitles and they still can't play High Profile.
Don't get me wrong here; I'm not an Apple fanboy at all. Just clearing up that iPad2 is the better video player period and does not need to be jailbroken to do so.

How is the Ipad with youtube playback? It really bothers me that the tegra 2 tablets can't play videos in "hq" mode without horrible stuttering. I'm hoping 3.1 fixes this.
Ah, YouTube is a different story. The YouTube videos that the iPad can play are excellent... if they aren't Flash! However, there are browsers like Skyfire in the app market that plays flash but I haven't tried it yet. From reading reviews, 3.1 does seem to address those issues. All in all for YouTube, the Asus has the upperhand especially if you watch YouTube on the stock browser.

I tried watching youtube videos on the transformer with the youtube application and it was pretty bad. That was a while ago, is it better now?
Sorry for the derail.
I'm having no problems with the couple videos I'm watching now through the YouTube app. The only problem I get with YouTube is, of course, the HD playback in the browser but again I believe the Xoom owners have reported 3.1 fixes that.
Video playback capabilities of these Tegra Honeycomb tablets is a bit frustrating! My SGSII plays video and handles in-browser flash better (as in much better). I guess I will be connecting my phone to my television when I want to watch 1080p video, rather than my tablet...

True... but in that case... why would I get a tablet?
Or (that will be the case for a lot of ppl.) if you can only afford one of those?
New (fully capable) smartphone or tablet (that can only do some of the thing phone can but has bigger screen). Which one?
Not, to mention... what is the point in creating device, a tablet COMPUTER that is beaten in functionality and performance by phone.

Agreed, but to be honest with all these reviews of the I/O versions and those boasting Tegra2, it seems the new official 10.1 will have it. I'm really back and forth about returning my Transformer to try a new 10.1 out. I mean I only plan to keep either one until the Tegra3 Kal-el tablets start rolling in (Asus and Amazon rumored to roll some out this year). Financially it'd be smarter to just stick with my Transformer, but I've always been about design and build and the Samsung sure looks like it has the Transformer beat. Trade off for build and form factor are the loss of the microSD expansion though, which means (according to the J&R pre-order pricing) I'd have to spend $599 for a 32GB Sammy vs. the $399 16GB Transformer+$35 16GB class 10 microSD card.
OK,
I have just returned my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (16Gb) to the store after suffering the "Newtons Ring / Oil Spill" phenomenon, and after the store assistant told me that someone else had returned 2 with the same problem, and BOTH store display models have the same issues, I decided not to get a new one. So now I am in the market for a new tablet. (And to get rid of my Dock, Book cover and SD / USB Connection Kit, Dock - Used, Book Cover - Unopened and SD / USB Connection Kit - Unopened - but thats another story).
So I am thinking about moving away from Tegra 2 after having problems getting it to play High Profile HD video due to the underpowering of the Tegra 2 chipset.
I am considering the Archos G9, which has a Texas Instruments ARM dual-core CORTEX A9 OMAP 4 chip (1Ghz to 1.5Ghz), which Archos claim will play High Profile HD video.
Are there any tabs that you think I should consider?
I realise that this is a Galaxy Tab forum, but I have read some good advice from users of this forum section.

This.
Add to it that they're big and heavy based on the published specs.
If you're not a big video (streaming and local) user the HTC Jetstream/Puccini is a great tablet. It'll probably be released in Europe this Fall.
If you want a good thin alternative to the Tab 10.1, the new OMAP-powered Toshiba AT200 looks like a good bet, if it releases in the near future.
I think you might need to wait for the next generation of tablets. The GT10 is as good as it gets right now. After the new year there will be several more options but as of now, there's nothing that will get you high profile video and build quality at the same time. A quick question about the newton rings: could you actually see them when the screen was turned on?

One of these two options.
Or you can get a Blackberry Playbook, I have one and it plays 1080p videos without a sweat, you can even multitask while the video is playing without a single frame being skipped!!! The HDMI output is the best of any tablet on the market, and the screen is top notch.

The Playbook is using the same OMAP CPU as the aforementioned Toshiba AT200, except clocked at 1GHz as opposed to the 1.2GHz of the Toshiba.
So if it can rattle through 1080p videos, there's a good chance the Toshiba will be able to as well.
It's the GPU, the PowerVR SGX GPUs are something pretty special.
Nope, not underpowered, just a crap video player supplied with the stock rom. I thought it was true until I found dice player. With dice I have had no trouble playing any video so far. The 4 gb file size limit is more of an issue that finding a proper video player.

Tegra2 only support H.264 [email protected] and no weighted prediction B-frames.
For me thats okay, no need to play higher resolution on the tab than 720p anyway. Only problem is having to recode high res videos.
And about the 4gig limit. You can copy larger files too, over wireless if you have the time. (which takes a ****load of time, is there any other way to copy larger files to the tab, and maybe even faster?)

The HP Touchpad can do it if somebody writes a decent media player for it. I've tried remuxing 1080p h264 videos (to reencode the audio while keeping video intact) and it plays the videos very smoothly with stock player. Waiting patiently for Android to come so I can try DicePlayer and others with the TouchPad.

Never understood the desire to play full 1080p monster video files on a tablet. I love watching full size on my huge plasma but on the tablet it is just a waste to play such a large file. I batch encoded some for playimg on the tablet for trip a while back with handbrake and all I had to do was limit three bit rate. The video looked perfect and with dice player it never stuttered.
Each to hire one I guess, but this is much better than watching on my phone and the form factor is perfect.

It's just a matter of convenience. Would you prefer reencode all the videos if it could be avoided? And not everybody has a computer fast enough to do so quickly. On my intel E8400, a 2hour movie will take about half a day.
It's an extra step that should be unnecessary. It limits how you can use your tab since you just can't drag & drop videos on a whim not knowing if it'll play. Also it's not awaste if you're using it to feed an hdtv.
Were people expecting the first generation tablets to be blu ray players too? This is complaining just for the sake of complaining.

I don't see the point playing 1080p video on tablet either. Speaking of convenient, I think it's more convenient just to download smaller 720p videos and not have to worry about file size and such.

Why can this play back all these when the 10.1 can't?
This blows. Tegra2 is old news anyway.
Im gonna sell my 10.1 and get the quad core version anyway.
The "old" tab 8.9 also has a tegra2 processor.
The new one that should come out next year has an OMAP4 1.4 ghz procssor.
Interestingly, the list of formats of the 10.1 is also similarly long:
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/GT-P7510UWYXAB-specs
When they write some format is supported, don't take it for granted.
And even if it is supported, one format often has multiple sub formats.
Please also differentiate video container format (a file with a certain suffix that usually wraps video and audio together, sometimes also adding subtitles or chapters) and video codec (the format of the video or audio stream itself that is embedded in the file).
For instance h264 avc video is generally supported, but when it is in high resolution (720p or larger) only a subset of encodings, generally wrapped up with the name "base profile" are supported.
This is a limitation of the tegra2 chipset.
Other chipset like that used with OMA4 supports a more wider range. Also, tegra3 should fix this limitation.
Its really a complex area.
Is there a certain format or video that does no play for you?
If so please report which (in as much detail as possible)....
All you need to know is that Tegra 2 has very poor video playback support.
I'll probably never buy a Tegra based stuff again, considering how poor tegra 2 is. Also ICS will be OMAP native so expect slow update on tegra devices.

Really? I have 2TB of MKV files all remux'd with their original frame rates and resolution. Other than the occasional frame drop, all have played well. This includes 1080p Blu-Ray movies. I copy files off my TiVo's which end up as MP2's and they all play fine as well. I stream using PlayOn and Plex and haven't had any issues there either. I bought a ton of stuff on MediaHub during the $.01 sale and they played beautifully. YouTube works fine which many complain about which is surprising considering we're all using the same hardware and software. I just watched the Twilight Next Dawn trailer full-screen in HD and there wasn't even a frame drop.
There are two components to effective video playback - hardware and software. Samsung does an incredible job with the drivers for the latter which is why if you look at the Tab vs. any other Tegra device in a video comparison it kicks ass. Some of you having video playback issues may want to look at your content and wireless connections. I had a Qualcomm-based Jetstream and returned it after a week because it absolutely sucked at video playback and wasn’t usable at all with any of the streaming apps. I’m guessing its epic fail was based on the HTC software and drivers. OMAP is next up and Samsung may use Exynos in future tablets. Until then, this is about as good as it gets.

Oh my god! Can you believe that this new thing is better than the old thing? I mean, I'll never buy old things again! It's new all the way for me from here on!
Wait, are you saying that the new thing got old? Why did I buy this old thing? I need the new thing! They tricked me by saying it was new!

So, a high-profile L4.1 1080p video (MKV or even MP4) file play perfectly on your Tegra 2 Galaxy Tab 10.1 via the stock video player or any other good 3rd party video player? That's the first time I've heard of the Tegra 2 being able to do so.
I read on samsung page Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 have Bluetooth 3.0.
But Tegra 2 chipset don´t have Bluetooth 3.0.
It is false of Samsung (itwas same with 10.1) and they dont know their own product or it have another processor?
LTE version Galaxy Tab 8.9 will have 1,5 Ghz Exynos processor (and micro sd slot).
If normal wersion will be have exynos(1,2 Ghz) too, I will be happy(for 1080p high profile playback)

WTF are you talking about? The bluetooth subsystem has nothing to do with the CPU.

From what he wrote it sounds like the videos are converted on the fly when he copies them - and that will probably be in a format that tegra2 can handle.
If not then the original video is already in base profile because tegra2 defenitively can't handle 1080p high profile.
Baseline: some 1080p videos play, some don't - that guy probably just got lucky and did not run into formats it can't handle...

There are two components to effective video playback - hardware and software. Samsung does an incredible job with the drivers for the latter which is why if you look at the Tab vs. any other Tegra device in a video comparison it kicks ass. Some of you having video playback issues may want to look at your content and wireless connections. Can you post what apps/components you use for video playback? I am trying to compile a thread with information how to stream media wirelessly to TAB
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1268725
What I need is
1) What DLNA app you use on TAB? AllShare? uPNp?
2) Do you do special encoding for mkv?
3) How do you stream?

I am not talking about cpu, but chipset. Or you know some tegra 2 devices on market, which have Bluetooth 3.0?

The international Tab's have 3.0.
http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/mobile-devices/tablets/tablets/GT-P7510FKDXEU-spec
It also comes with AllShare (DLNA). I'm getting a 3G from the UK and am using a U.S. Wi-Fi right now. I'll post what other differences I find when I get it in two weeks.

1) - I don't stream "from" any of my mobile devices. I run a home server and it's easier to keep all my content there and then stream "to" the device(s) when I want to view or display content. The only content trapped on my phone are things downloaded through MediaHub. But anything in MediaHub is available elsewhere if I wanted to watch it on a big screen.
2) - I use DVDFab and have for years. It has its own codecs which work well but I use it with CoreAVC. I think the quality of encoded files makes a huge difference in playback and is probably the root issue for people having problems. They have a free trial if people want to compare it to what they're currently using.
3) - I have a Netgear N750 which is a fairly new high-end router. It reaches everywhere in my three story house without the need for a repeater. I have home theatre PC's attached to my main TVs via Wi-Fi and use them to display content off the server. Most of the time, I access my content while away from home. Plex is my main server/client and it does a fantastic job streaming to mobile devices - even over 3G. I also use PlayOn for accessing Hulu and network TV content. It too works really well over 3G. It has a new feature "PlayLater" that lets you store Hulu and network content (including Netflix movies) locally for playback any time. Both do a great job of transcoding on the fly which is why they work so well in a low-bandwidth and low-processing power environment.
Personally, any phone or tablet is under powered to be an effective media server. Maybe great for videos and pics recorded on the device, but anything else is a stretch until the hardware improves.

Tegra2 doesn't have a specified chipset, even for Bluetooth. It will work with any Bluetooth HCI device that talks UART, USB, or SDIO.
And why do you care about 3.0? There aren't really any practical advantages. I still have yet to see anything on the market that supports high speed mode.
I am now using my new galaxy s2 with the exenyos processor and it really makes the tegra 2 processor in my gtab.10.1 feel like it is a slug. From day one I never really thought the tegra 2 felt any faster than the single core hummingbird processor in my galaxy s original. I guess the magazine reviewers overhyped it, the graphics is pitiful compared to the original galaxy s and now the s2.

So then Samsung pages dont know their own product, because GT-P7510/M16 have in real only Bluetooth 2.1.
Ok this seems on same false, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 will be have Tegra 2 and Bluetooth 2.1.

I have a SGS2 also and had a G2X which was Tegra. You can't compare a phone and a tablet. The SoC is pushing 800x480 to a 4.3" screen on a phone and 1024x768 on a 10" screen on a tablet. That's why phones with the new qHD displays benchmark below their predecessors. No doubt the Exynos would perform better than the Tegra but your not going to see the same performance you're getting on your SGS2.

Where's your Tab from? The model numbering system is the same worldwide but there are regional differences. The U.S. versions have 2.1 and it says so on the Samsung U.S. website.
I am from Europe and there SGT 10.1 have also Bluetooth 2.1.
But before start sales SGT 10.1 in USA(June) us samsung mobile says it have BT 3.0. After one week they correct this. Now it seems same with SGT 8.9.
I was guna go for the prime bt there is just too many issues with it. I mainly download movies through torrent and watch it straight away on the tab and I would like to know is 720/1080p playback smooth at all? (not on YouTube) thank you
yes playback is smooth. it will any video as long as its codec is supported.

Smooth playback as long as its not a 10bit file.

From my experience this isn't entirely true. I've had difficulties playing some .wmv and .mp4 files but I'm not knowledgable enough to understand why.
seems like i should just go for the prime or wait for another t3 tab
I use Dice Player and it plays every AVI and MKV file I have thrown at it, no lag and no worries. Video playback is my main use for the 7.7 and i've had no issues with it. I intentionally went for the 7.7 with its Exynos over the Tegra2 tablets and i'm glad i did.
Yes dice seems to play more than others like MX does.
I use both mx and dice - dice for the ones MX doesn't like!
Video performance is generally great with a mixture of avi/mkv and mp4 all with a mixture of stereo/ac3/dts soundtracks.
Highly recommended device.

I'd get the galaxy tab or wait. I had two primes and though the tablet on its own is great, there is no GPS and Wifi reception is weak. Lots of reboots. The aluminum back was a design flaw affecting reception and Asus is already replacing the device with newer models with plastic parts over the antenna similar to the 7.7. I see the prime relegated to the closet soon due to its problems.
In comparison I found the samsung to be close to the prime in performance, better in some areas, but the screen is way better IMHO. Can't wait for ICS.

i am still struggling because i had 2 720p mkv (x264 dexter 1.61gb and x264 suits 1.42gb) on my 10.1 before and i can play suits using DICE with no problem but dexter is just not watchable. i am aware of the 10-bit mkv problem but when i click more info on my mac it doesn't tell me whether it is 8 or 10 bit. i mainly jus download the video on my tab and if i cant watch it, it is very annoying as i dont like wasting time to download a lower quality one lol
any1 knows is the 10 bit due to the hardware or software problem?
and if i open the tab, it is not possible to have a refund as this is not the fault of the product....

There is a hardware video decode chip in the tab that handles video, up to 1080p high profile h.264. However, 10-bit color profiles are a fairly recent advance in encoding, so the hardware does not support it (I have yet to see any hardware that does, in fact). On your desktop, your cpu can handle the decoding, but of course your desktop cpu is much more powerful than the two cortex A9s in Exynos. MX will show you if hardware decoding isn't supported, in which case you're basically screwed for high-bitrate video of any kind.

you don't have to worry about mkv playback here in the galaxy tab 7.7 because unlike the 10.1 which sports a crappy tegra 2 processor which can only play baseline profile x264/h264 encoded vids, the gtab7.7 uses an Exynos processor which happily decodes high profile x264/h264 videos
