Are they talking bout the total rom capacity or just the /system partition.
For example on my G2 for internal storage the break down of the 2GB (which is not re-partitionable, sizes locked in):
system 409 MB
data 1309MB
cache 201MB
So if they're saying 512MB ROM are they talking strictly about /system, and if so does that likely count out the G2/Vision from the chance of an official rom.

Same thing aren't they? (Like HTC Magic is to Tmobile MyTouch 3g)
As far as I can tell the only real difference between a Desire-Z and G2 is the radio bands available to it, FM Radio, and keyboard layout, but everything else is identical.

No, the difference extends to memory. That's why you need a Desire Z HBOOT in order to use Sense ROMs on a G2.

Though you can put a DZ HBoot on a G2 right? in which case if they did release an official Rom for DZ you would just require the Hboot for that extra 120MB of /system memory.
So the question would extend to that, does that mean with a Desire Z having 535MB of /system, that ICS in theory would be supported by HTC in the official sense.

this is what i would assume as well. turns out htc did say ROM, i know strange as they could simply make a new hboot that partitions how large ROM would be on our phones. dont have the link at hand but they clearly are saying ROM - so i have no answer to why they wont update the g2/dz... stupidity? pure evil?

Ram was the original assumption til I seen many corrections to Rom. And as you said flashing a G2 with a DZ hboot would put you at about 549MB /system partition and larger 300M /cache, so if the system size of 512M min were the requirement you'd think that the HTC labeled DZ would at the very least qualify.
But far as why, probably doesn't have a large enough user base, and the device is old enough to not support without pissing off too many folks and probably aiming at making more profit by only offering official ICS to newer devices (or more popular models).
I only care for what an official ICS release from HTC/Quallicom(sp) would give to rom/kernel creators for our devices.
Ppl, it's RAM, not ROM. ROM, it's an operating system. HTC made a mistake. Again.

In which case the DZ/G2 is listed as "RAM:512 MB" would they still make the cut?
maybe because it has ~380MB of usable RAM they won't update

Though in their announcement did they actually say "must have 512MB 'usable'" ?
Makes more sense that they would be talking about total, as some of that 512 is used by the system.
Doesnt matter what that HTC idiot replied, in your other thread. Its a RAM issue, its always been. If you notice, more than 90% of the phones reciving a ICS update, have more than 512MB of RAM.
BTW, if i was HTC, I wouldnt release a update for ICS. I want to make money off new devices.

Well that much is obvious lol. Though how many actual people would avoid going to a new phone just because you can root it and get JB/ICS on it... (though some of us are already running ICS, mainly having the source will likely aid towards JB roms), I honestly don't think the number is quite that big, but time is of course money, and why spend money on a no-return task.

You recently wrote us about an issue with your HTC HD2.
The US HD2 devices that have more memory are T-mobile branded devices.
T-mobile has chosen to upgrade the devices with more memory.
This is not an option HTC is providing. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Well, there are two kinds of memory, yes? Read Only Memory, and Random-access Memory. The T-Mobile Hd2 Internal Memory: ROM 1GB; RAM 576MB.
So, technically I do not think you can accuse HTC of being not factual in their reply. As far as I am aware, the search for 1GB of ROM on the European and Asian HD2 has not been successful.
I have seen nothing that has proven to me that the HTC branded HD2s have 1GB ROM.

Unless you are intent on running many memory heavy apps at the same time, the extra RAM is pretty much unnecessary.
I run lots of programs- many of them quite heavy on RAM, but usually close one before opening another, and I've never run below 100MB free RAM, even with iGO8 running minimised.
Now, the ROM is a different matter- but little chance we will see any more without serious pruning to the ROM itself.
So if you're happy with the ROM you are on, stick with it!

Since the G2 and the Desire Z are "technically" the same Phone...One major difference will be the bands.
Therefore, will it be possible, when Cyanogen creates a ROM for the G2, to use it on the Desire Z? Or will it not work because of the different bands?
N1 and desire are closer in hardware than the Z and the G2, but they still require specific roms.
So......no.

pretty sure HSPA+ isn't going to stop custom roms. even then we haz cyanogen to help us hack it
the G2 and the Z are the same phone, only difference is the ROM space(internal storage) and radio, they have the SAME RAM and other internals so as already stated they should work almost interchangeably but they may not, the only way we will know for sure is to get shipped ROM for both and flash to the other device(after root of course) since we already have the shipped build for the G2 and the ENG build for the G2 then we should be able to get root within a reasonable amount of time.
and since cyanogen is getting the phone we can expect CM development almost immediately

1. Rom shouldn't even matter...for custom ROMs anyway.
2. Ram is the same. Check HTC.com they both have 512mb.
3. Internal Storage == ROM...
So that really only leaves the radio which is different.
P.S.
Yes, the Phones are both GSM, but they still have different bands, which equals a completely different radio.
For Instance, a ROM for the Motorola Milestone from Brazil with the bands: 850 / 1900 / 2100
will not work on a Motorola Milestone from Germany with the bands: 900 / 2100...

Well...whatever changes Cyanogen does to his sources, they could easily be ported anyways by just replacing the correct libraries for the radio, etc.
I doubt it will be a problem.
does any one know the /system size of the g2?
and i wouldnt worry to much about HSPA+ the coverage for it isnt that good right now, so if there is any bugs with roms and hspa+ it will be fixed by the time hspa+ is up in your area.
And i dont know about the differences in the 2 phones. but i believe that it is something with the radio because that controls so much of the phone and the rom is more or less the software
i have HSPA+ in my area so i certainly hope that we can still use it with custom ROMs. cannot wait to get this phone

the answer is obviously yes. sense 3 with 2.3.4 is gonna be stock on the mt4gslide so once thats leaked you best believe we will have it. granted the mt4g slide has dual core processor and 200 more ram, so it can handle a bit more, you best believe our phones can still handle it, it wont take much more to run 2.3.4 than 2.3.3 which the mt4g already handles with great speeds. so just give it a month or so before an official build leaks and we will have it.
Almost the only difference between 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 is the Google Framework.
You can just flash the latest one (which is integrated into most ROMs by now, all those supporting Gtalk video have to do it), and you'll get whatever you really need 2.3.4 for.

There's a command line you can enter in Terminal that says something about ~626, but that does not report total system RAM. I'm sure someone else can explain that better, but the MT4G does indeed have 768MB of total RAM.

You can't have it showing right - because currently the Gtalk app was only built and adjusted for Nexus S, and was hacked to work on other phones. As such, it's not adjusted properly to be running on all the phones with different camera libs, and that includes Sense camera libs. Sense ROMs with 2.3.4 will cure it, if they'll have Talk app - which they might not.

Even when I had the Nexus S if your phone wasn't on stock you still had to find a work around to getting video chat to work on g-talk, then there was the issue of having it work on 3G and not just wifi.

Yes, the G1 was the only Android phone with so little internal memory, but he's actually talking about something different. In mid/late '10, a modded radio came out that somehow freed up the amount of RAM available to the OS slightly. I never tried it and don't remember much about it though.
