Wow, that's lame -- suing over "slide-to-unlock" and "tapping on the autocorrected word" is just damn stupid. I mean, did Samsung copy Apple's code 1-1 only changing what was needed for Android??? I doubt it. Its also crap like this that I don't take my countries Judicial System seriously. There's a bit more that they sued over, but those take the cake.
I think the problem, ultimately, is Apple's iOS is starting to become Crappy Android so Apple's suing manufactures to keep better devices off the Market so end users won't see how bad Apple devices really are (and how they're becoming Droid Clones). My parents both have 3gs and they totally suck (my first smartphone before the Bravo, btw) -- there's still a dhcp bug that doesn't switch the 3g ip address to the Wifi ip address. They're just butt hurt that they make Flashy, Expensive, & Inferior Products.
I wish Google would start suing Apple for integrating Android features and functions. Just do a gis and you'll see how Apple's "Groundbreaking Features" were already in Android for years already.
The judge in this case is a moron. Slide to Unlock isn't a major, ground breaking technology. Neither is Tapping Autocorrected Words. I'd understand if it was a new codec so something like that, but tapping Autocorrected words is the touch equivalent of right clicking and selecting the corrected spelling....
My questions -- When will Apple sue Motorola Mobility since my Stock Bravo can do everything that the SGS3 is being sued over??? Or, Even Better, sue MIUI since they have a theme that's a 1-1 clone of the Apple lockscreen; sue Digital Clock Widget (in Market) since they cloned the Apple Clock Widget; sue Sony since they have a screen with a higher dpi than the 4s (only Apple's allowed a high dpi screen, remember they had it first); See how ridiculous all this is...
This would be like me suing a rival fence company because we both installed a gate latch that flips upwards to open....I did it first so I can claim the rights to gate latches that flip up.......:silly:
Well, actually, it would be more like me suing because I use fabricated welded frames on my chain link gates where most other companies use L brackets and tek screws...What ever, ya'll get the point.
Did you weld that gate frame??? You can't weld that frame, only I can weld frames. See ya in court.

Lol you definitely made your point. Its kind of sad that apple is copying from google android and then sueing Samsung aka the company that makes their processors! Also those slide to unlock features were also on my lg xenon way back in the day and so was tapping on auto correct. The iPad was even copied from Microsoft because bill gates introduced to tablet computer in 2002! They stole the touch screen idea from the Nintendo Ds. Hell they took the status bar from android but they are suing for a lock screen which is definitely different from there's. Google, Microsoft, Samsung, HTC, Nokia, and etc should sue apple for copying them every year with their "most amazing phone yet"

I completely agree with that.....Software lawsuits, for the most part, are over very trivial things and only screw the end user. I don't think software should be allowed to have a patent, due to the fact that in some cases that's the only way to code something in.
I remember an example from a few years back that ReactOS (Windows Clone OS) happened to write a piece of code identical to M$'s and they got sued over it. They managed to prove that the way and how they wrote it was in no way related to M$'s code, reversed engineered, and independently developed & just happened to be the exact same as the M$ code because that was the ONLY way to do the intended function.
And when you get down to it -- ALMOST ALL "NEW" TECHNOLOGY IS BASED FROM AN EARLIER IDEA -- That's called progress and where most new inventions and innovations come from -- Not only in technology, but in EVERYTHING.
I'm not the biggest fan of Microsoft, but I completely understand why they sued in the above example -- identical code, but the code in question here isn't even the same. But suing over crap like this is dumb. Apple went from being an industry innovator to just a Patent Troll that's more even Trolltastic than the Fark and Gamefaqs Trolls.
Oh, and Apple's also suing over rounded corners on the phone....Damn Artards...Yes, I wrote rounded corners, you read it right.
//Bored with about 20 more minutes left to sync the repo.
///Seriously, when did making rounded corners become a sue-able offense in America?

Apple Suing HTC over 20 patents

If you haven't heard of it already, Apple has slapped HTC with a lawsuit today for violating ~20 patents.
They're trying for a permanent injunction to disallow any future HTC handset imports into the US.
Wow. Seems like someone's scared. What do you guys think about this?

I posted this same response on SprintUsers but I'm so disgusted with this I couldn't help but copy and paste it here.
"How very pathetic.
The only Apple product I have ever bought was my girlfriends iPod.
It's not enough that they have sold more phones than anyone now they want to monopolize the market?
I hated having no option but to install itunes just to be able to use her ipod. Just sad.
Apple is going on my boycott list along with McDonald's, WalMart, and a few others.
Whether they win or lose this suit it's official; I will NEVER purchase another product made by Apple, ever."
Just a heads up, the mods already locked one topic about this in this forum as another topic about it existed elsewhere:

Apple got it's paradigm to replace MSDOS from Xerox, Google it.
How quickly they forget, if it wasn't for the gift from Xerox, apple wouldn't be.
So it seems a new industry of bootlegged / home brew phones could be around the corner.

Wow....guess I don't know as much about technology as I thought. Cause I was downloading applications on Windows 3.11 with 28.8 kb/s internet connection back in 93 or so....Didn't know apple invented that. Guess I need to start paying more attention. And I thought I was playing video poker on touchscreens and signing for packages on a touch-pad quite a while back too. Apple kicks ass, inventing all this **** and keeping it on the DL.
this is fun. apple has filed anything and everything under patents. people wonder why no one can beat the iphone. a device that cant even multitask. my moto razr did better than the iphone. the problem is that the fine line between profit and loss is extremely small when you get sued and knowing how apple goes about things they will take htc for the profit they earned. i have faith though. htc has some very very talented people including lawyers. they didnt implement the technology that apple patented without knowledge of how to beat it.
thats my .02 cents.

well according to patents, "multitouch"
"A computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a computing device with a touch screen display comprises: detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen display, applying one or more heuristics to the one or more finger contacts to determine a command for the device, and processing the command. The one or more heuristics comprise: a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a one-dimensional vertical screen scrolling command, a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a two-dimensional screen translation command, and a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a command to transition from displaying a respective item in a set of items to displaying a next item in the set of items."
which is a technology for some reason. funny as hell that steve jobs is listed as one of the inventors. i think htc beat this lawsuit by only implementing while you perform an action and as you see that is not in the patent. so the only time multitouch is used is when it detects two fingers moving away or towards one another which is not a command.
gotta love America

Yeah, and actually, Apple is copying Android's notification bar for it's iOS 5 and nobody even points that out! Personally, after using both iPhone and Android (Galaxy S), I feel both are completely different and I don't think anyone "copied" the other as they give different experiences overall. One should never go just by appearance!
Unfortunately there is only so many ways you can design a touchsceen phone, and an app screen.
Their entire claim pivots on broad, sweeping claims like their ownership of "a field of square icons with rounded corners" - it's stupid, vexatious, and anti-competative.
Their entire claim about copying the physical shape of the iPad is also based on it being a flat tablet with rounded corners. It's ridiculous.
It's not the phone, this is Standard Operating Procedure for Apple. How many of us remember how the Apple Mac got its start? Apple stole the Graphical User Interface from Xerox. Then a few years later they sued Digital Research Corporation because their Ventura Publisher product for the PC contained a Graphica User Interface. The fun thing about this story is that Digital Research licensed their GUI... from Xerox!
if you cant beat em, sue em.

but its true.. samsung really copied ios quite alot on the UI..
but the way handles it is un-capitalistic.. the whole idea behind the world they live in is that there are competition that will copy your stuff as closly they can if its a good solution and if it is not they will make something better or try to.
if apple dont like it they can move to north korea.. they can probebly get excusive rights to be the only phone for sale there

Absolutely agree. The iPhone is derived from HTC Touchphones that appeared on the market 1 year earlier (also with the color white and rounded edges). The iPad is derived on Archos Pads that arrived on the market several years earlier!
As you say, this is what good companies in a capatilistic societies do: improve on competitor products or on their own products.
There was no need for samsung to shake their a*ss 3 times to sh*t straight.

When this nonsense first appeared, it was revealed that samsung had developed a ui very similar to the iphone and unveiled it almost a year before the first iphone was released. It was crude compared to what we see now on iphone and Touchwiz but it's pretty clear that samsung had it first and has made it best.

Let's make a poll and see how many of the Samsung owners bought the phone cause they thought it looked so much like an Iphone. I'm writing on behalf of Apple to insist that you cease and desist from making ludicrous claims about Apple's rights to make ludicrous claims about stuff they stole...erm...invented.
This is in itself in breach of retrospectively granted patent no 63578929, 'Patent to claim to have invented stuff (and we ain't even lying) 1895'.
The above patent is valid under Apple's patented patent system, patented by Apple Patents Inc in 4258BC.
If they stuck to saying 'well we didn't invent it but we implemented it really well, albeit in a somewhat restrictive manner', you'd have more sympathy, but this persistent reinvention of facts is just tedious.
Why would anyone buy a phone because it looks like the iphone and how many actually use touchwiz anyway, i got this phone as it is the best phone on the market and the best screen simple as.
It's funny, on a simple google search you can find tons of chinese/korean iphone and ipad replicas that look exactly the same, but Apple can't be bothered about them. Of course, you can ignore obscure producers whose phones are manufactured in the forests by panda bears cause if you sue them and you win you get 1 cart of bamboo leaves as compensation. Why not sue a top selling company with the hope that you will get a lot of money and at the same time causing them distress and huge losses. It's all about the competition and Apple relies on less conventional ways of trying to catch up / stay on top.
See what Steve **** says here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CW0DUg63lqU
More of the same nonsense from Apple. They sued HTC a while back, see any shortages of HTC phones?
I wouldn't buy anything apple, I detest them as a company and don't see why all the iSheep like them so much. They are nowt special and ridiculously over-priced. I loved my Galaxy S but my Galaxy S2 is just SO much better. I'll probably get the Galaxy S3 after this.
i think iphone should not change..apple aims to sell to brainless people and it is an affordable target.
In my opinion the right question is: what android should do to sell to brainless people?

After reading both patents and the portions of the claims made by Apple, I suppose the ITC is right. HTC does infringe on the patents, but so does every other computer and smartphone manufacturer.
In the first patent, what Apple seems to have been allowed to process is the method by which a computer can search for, identify, and allocate actions to strings of data in a system comprising of a processor, ram, and disk storage. Kind of like the context menu used in every operating system produced today that has a graphical interface.
The second patent is a little harder to understand. It claims that Apple's people invented what boils down to symmetric multiprocessing using a WAN, so long as the device being used to process this plurality of realtime services to and from a number of independent applications and devices is embodied by a hardware device with programmable software. Which also sounds like just about any computer currently made.
I think the ITC will overrule the initial decision, given that both of these patents are old and these practices are in use worldwide by every computing company. If this were upheld, I can't think of a single smartphone manufacturer that would be allowed to import devices anymore.

I think this is squarely an attack on free culture and open source software. I mean, I don't see why WP7 isn't infringing on these patents either.
When your competitor is open source and royalty-free, the only way to compete is by making a better product. Although others may disagree, I think Android is a far superior product - Apple's operating system has to run on about 10 devices, a lot of which are no longer supported - and since it's open source, its mindshare is essentially infinite, and it will continue improving beyond Apple's products.
Apple's other problem is their walled-garden approach. The reason they lost all their mindshare is because they choose not to produce something viable for a wide-range of devices. That's the primary reason they lost so much mindshare and market share. They introduced a market and immediately cordoned themselves off to a corner of it before they even had any competitors! The door was wide open for a competitor and of course, Google stepped in. There were others of course, like HP, Palm, maybe Intel and Microsoft but they never got their act together. I still shed a tear every time I think of Nokia and Symbian.
Let's not forget that these inventions are mind-numbingly obvious. If someone texts you a number, obviously you would want to call it or save it, right? Not to mention that email clients and webbrowsers have been autoformatting websites and email addresses since the dawn of time, so there's ubiquitous prior art out there. The first patent should be struck down immediately. I don't even know what the second patent is supposed to be, but it sounds really vague and BS.
Finally, what HTC says is true. It's sad that Apple's wasting not only their own resources, but all their enemies' resources as well on legal fees. What this is showing is that patent litigation is hampering innovation rather than stimulating it. In a fast-moving field like mobile development, where products are long since obsolete once they expire, software patents make no sense, they only hamper innovation, and they should be banned.
I agree, anyone ever thought of submitting a formal response to the lawsuit. I'm sure it it went to every xda forum we could a bunch of support. Its not perfect but its how out law system works. Lol, the ball has to start somewhere ya know?
Sent from my HTC EVO shift 4G running the latest and greatest cyanogen using the XDA app.
I agree with the point that Apple is not being innovative and scared of the competition. IOS hasn't changed at all, the devices are all by Apple and they are too locked down. Android is open source there are a good number of manufacturers which give ppl options. I own an iPod touch and its nice for playing music but theres really nothing to it. Most ppl who own apple products don't know anything about them. I know a lot of ppl who think that since its called iPhone 4G, they get 4G data. Now I can say that Apple started a huge thing with capacitive screens and the whole touch screen and apps, but a good business should keep coming up with new things instead of saying here's what we made, this is all you get, and everyone thinks its the best.

Apple following GNotes design patterns?

According to http://mashable.com/2012/05/24/apple-stylus/this article Apple applied for a stylus patent. Is this a sign of next iphone will include a stylus or what? How cool is that?
Article tells apple's stylus will be different then others as follows. Apple’s idea of the stylus, however, is slightly different from the simple styluses you usually get with tablets today. It’s an optical device that can determine (via a pressure sensor) when it’s in contact with a surface and can capture an image using a built-in camera.
Does it sound familiar to you? I think it's Sammy's turn now to sue Apple for copying GNote's Spen
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
You can't patent the stylus.
You can however patent your own specific implementation/take on it. Read the actual patent filing, Apple's optical stylus design includes THREE different sensors in the stylus, including a camera. It's designed to detect itself in 3D space and is actually very cool.
Don't be an unthinking fandroid and post rubbish like Samsung should sue Apple over a stylus.
That being said, it's interesting to see Apple now apparently acknowledging the utility of the stylus after publicly scoffing at it when they revealed their iPhone way back when.

they blew it
Also samsung didn't create the stylus in the note, wacom did.
They wont be putting stylus in iPhone or iPad, they did it just to limit Samsung if they decide to make new and better stylus for newer phones/tablets... Now they won't be able to put gyroscope or camera into it, because its Apple's patent ... Apple is becoming serious patent troll ...
Lol apple.... I'll never buy apple products again, fking hypocrites. I'm soooooo happy with android and my galaxy note!!

I love my Macbook Pro. But this is annoying....Apple is either: A) Just trying to prevent Samsung from doing something cool with a new version of the Note or B) They are changing their mind and since Steve Jobs isn't around they are making a stylus and copying Samsung because they see "oh, people might actually like that.
The ONLY reason why iPhone is the #1 phone is marketing. They always copy features that Android started first, typically. If Android manufacturers make a "feature" on their phones and the consumers love it, Apple will come around and say "Oh, ya'll actually like that, we just thought it wouldn't fit in an iPhone, but because you like it we'll add it now".
Aggravating. But, Apple is doing something right, they are making billions on people. I'll stick with Google, Android, and manufacturers, namely Samsung.
Its an ingenious little patent I'll grant that. The Note has proved that designers want to use a mobile device for their work and Apple obviously wants a piece of that. This device will allow much more refined stylus experience.... using the top part as a rubber...(Although Wacom already have this) using the pen at an angle to deliver a light shading effect.
That being said.... Apple won't release it for a long time and they'll release an incredibly basic version with minor upgradea up until the iNote 5

Yup, like when Jobs was saying what a stupid idea tablets were initially and then Apple releasing the iPad a few years later.
But yes, Stylus's (Stylii?) have been around for decades, and just because Apple have applied for a patent for their version doesn't mean they'll be granted one, although given how pathetic the patent system is, they probably will be.
A decent stylus would make the ipad much more attractive to people wanting to do design work. They need to do something different other than just sticking a faster processor, better screen or LTE modem, in the next iteration, maybe this will be it.
Samsung and Apple already have more than enough lawsuits in progress against each other, they hardly need to add more at this stage.
Also - Apple has probably thought of the market for accessory stylus's, they can sell lots of different coloured ones other than the inevitable white or black one they'll release initially and make even more bank.

This is actually really intelligent on Apple's part. They're recognizing that creative minded people want to use their products for art creation. Releasing their own special, branded stylus with some bells and whistles is a no brainer. Especially since it looks like they're not going to license wacom tech. They'll be making some healthy margins on a beefy markup.
That being said, this seems like it may be another area where Google cedes a niche market to Apple, the other being audio related tasks. Android's audio latency is pretty terrible.

Totally agree. Marketing, and timing.
It all started with the iPod, and that ingenious marketing campaign with the black silhouettes and white headphones. Didn't take long before the iPod became the dominant mp3 player in the market - despite there being better alternatives.

This is why other companies aren't anywhere near Apple in profit and mindshare right now. This manner of thinking.
You're focusing on the pieces and not the whole. Apple doesn't simply sell a function or a stand-alone piece - they sell an experience to accompany a lifestyle. Which is where other companies wanna buy.
Despite there being technically superior options as far as audio quality, support goes - none of the other solutions were designed with the whole package in mind.
None had the whole shebang together. None had the build quality (those 1st/2nd gen iPods still work to this very day), none had the ease of use and intuitiveness (the click wheel is really where the iPad came into its own), the software solution. Drag 'n' drop is simple but Average Joe doesn't want to mount his storage device and manually send things over, he wants to connect, forget and let the computer do things for him. I hate iTunes with a passion but if you don't mind locking down your collection and being part of the Apple ecosystem (preferably with a Mac cos the iTunes Windows experience is torture), you won't find a more polished complete package.
Apple markets exactly what they sell - an experience that comes along with a lifestyle. And with that comes healthy margins and insane profits. Why d'you think Samsung wants to be more Apple-like in approach, design and marketing (Sony tried to be the Apple of Japan for a while but they screwed the pooch on that one)?
Most people don't want to reconcile themselves around technology, they want the technology to fit them. And Apple is genius at that.
So take your irrational hate of Apple, stick it in a pipe and smoke it. Recognize what they've done well and recognize what competitors can take out of their book. Let's see if you continue to blithely stand by Samsung once they adopt more and more Apple-esque business, design and marketing (hello S3 announcement event) practices.
Why would they do that? Because when you're no longer a commodity, you can command higher pricws, margins and profits.

They couldn't have copied android when they released the iPhone first. Remember who was on apples board of directors....
That said, seems like a cool patent & as someone said many creative people use the iPad now as an art device. So this makes sense as another accessory.

Right, an iPhone with no apps or app store. Steve Jobs said the iPhone would never run apps...hmmm
Steve Jobs said that Stylus is dead and we should be grateful to Apple for killing it so if Samsung did not patent it, they're probably just trying to acquire it for licensing fees.
But again they said that 4" screen is just not good and not ergonomic etc. Now they'll probably use 4" screen because people actually want it - and call it magical and revolutionary ( not to mention amazing ).

Samsung VS Apple - Trial Closing Arguements

Hey, for all of you who are curious about how the Samsung VS Apple trial has been going (I know I have), I came across this article this morning:

It's a tad lengthy, however its a good read. Enjoy.

I was very disappointed to read the verdict - sad day for Samsung and their users. My question is - if Apple gets the judge to invoke the injunction does that mean that our rooted phones will also have to strip out the offending routines? Just makes me hate the zealots even more. Wonder how many of the members of the jury and judge had iphones? Does that mean that Apple cannot have any part of Project Butter?? Love my JB and the fact that my 2 year old phone is still cutting edge!!
On a different note, you mentioned that you are using FFC. I have installed one, but so far have not been able to fire it up. Is there any zip file with the i9000 FFC files on it? Would really like to know if mine is working.
Thanks.
JIM in FLA waiting for Isaac!
This just set a precedent for Apple.
Apple is now going to sue everything that makes anything they do.
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it superman? Nope its our economy crashing.

Their patents that they were suing Apple with also just recently got invalidated.
All I want to see is Google doing something. I want google to sneak some patents over to the OEM's and help em out a bit.

This means whatever next google nexus will likely be pretty different than most previous nexus. KeyLime will probably have redesign too to avoid lawsuit.

Stock AOSP is not the problem, its mostly over Samsung's Touchwiz UI. Having familiar icons etc.
I dont see how their going to change the design though, from a rectangle to a square?

Jury member admits that they did not use prior art in consideration.
I hear an appeal.
these apple vs android OEMs make me think of one thing
Benz suing every other automaker for "copying" the automobile but the lawsuit would be like...
patent infringement on vehicles using a device to turn the wheels
having a location for the occupants to set their posterior on
Having spokes in the wheels
Having wheels with a round circumference
someone really needs to get a wiffleball bat an start swining for the fences on these apple yahoos they may have generalized smart phones but if you take cars into consideration it be like the first car with 4 wheels well hey 4 wheels is balanced an is general.
an also i hope that google has some sort of super patent waiting to deal with that stupid apple patent for searching :/
if anything apple needs to have all their vague broad patents voided until they can make it narrow an none broad
Patents on trade dress are ridiculous "a rectangle with gently rounded corners" " a screen with even space from the bottom and top to the bezel"
I didn't know apple invented rectangles and other symmetrical shapes?? And then some of the patents are obvious stuff, bounce back, screen pinch, REALLY
The fact of the matter is nobody bought a sgs1 or any other Sammy products thinking it was apple products.
When you go to the big box stores apple products are usually merchandised in another area than most other OEM's.
Apple just has their panties in a wad because Sammy is actually selling more smart phones than them and their products are comparable, better IMO, to theirs.
Its not Sammy's fault that apple has only released like six smart phones. They put out products to appeal to everyone, not just an elite group of pretentious asses.
I could go on but I think you guys get the jest of it!
Its peanut butter jelly(bean) time...

You'll really love this posting to facebook that I found then. Check it out, it freaking beautiful on Benz' part and really drives the point too.
I just saw the most incredible interview involving a Mercedes Benz executive talking candidly about his disgust with how Apple has been acting lately in court about the whole smartphone ordeal. I wish I could find it to share in full but I came accross it while channel surfing. In a nutshell, he said "We at Mercedes own over 80,000 patents worldwide including the rights to the first self-propel
led 4 wheeled vehicle, or as we all would call it today, the 'CAR'. We could take every car manufacturer in the world to court with legitemate claims that they copied our idea and force them put out 3 or 2 or 5 wheeled vehicles etc. Do we? Of course not! We exist today as we do because we bring the absolute best we can build to the market year after year. When he's asked if they're worried about the constant attempts to copy them as Apple claims Samsung and Google did, he just smiles and says "let them try, that's what has kept us at the top of our craft for over 100 years. Why would we stop now?" -Absolutely brilliant! That's how a real innovative company acts. Mercedes for president!
I couldn't have said it better, great find!

Goophone is planning to sue Apple for design infringement since their cloned hardware came out first before Apple. ROTFLMAO
http://www.aznewsdesk.com/iphone-5-knockoff-goophone-i5-to-sue-apple-for-patent-infringement
If this allowed, Samsung should hurry and produce a prototype next week so they can sue Apple if they release later.
