I'm trying to hide some pictures from folders that I need from the Gallery app.. I used to do this by adding a ".nomedia"folder.. But since I got the galaxy s3 it doesn't seem to be working that way.. I can't delete the pictures or the apps won't work.. Does anybody have a fix for this.. Without downloading a application for it? Thanks for any help you can give me!

I used to use a folder.. But either way neither of them work (file/folder)
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
just add the .nomedia file to the folder.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
How are you adding the file? Maybe I can walk you through it... check you private messages if you need help still
After you add the .nomedia file, clear gallery cache, reboot, and see if the pictures are there.
I did... I have never had a problem doing this before.. Until the galaxy s3 its soo strange., I appreciate everyone's help thank you so much.. I just can't figure this out. I will post some screen shots

You could also try deleting those pictures. Then they're sure to not show up.

If I delete them then my clocks won't have images.. So I'd have to re download all my files.. Then I'd be in the same boat again

I just sent you a link in a private message with the nomedia file i created - maybe the one your creating has a permissions issue, so maybe if you download that one and put it in your directory, then clear the data and reboot it will fix your issue...
I had this problem too. Download hide it pro and you can set pics to not show in the gallery.

I think your problem is using myfiles to create the file - try using a different file explorer - i use root explorer but there are others ones like astro that should work, then clear the data and reboot....
If you look myfiles doesnt see my .nomedia file but root explorer does:

If you clear data it will not delete your photos, it will just make gallery rebuild its database of the files...
Why are you adverse to downloading an app to accomplish your goal? There are free apps that do what you need and with a lot less time and hassle.

Here's what my gallery looks like after using Hide It Pro- despite the name, its a free app. I've seen what you're talking about with the black boxes, the first app I tried did that.

Hi
I dont know why the pictures and videos of my games shows up in the gallery. Is there a way to remove them without deleting them from the game directory?
It never happened before but it happened since i upgraded to darky 9.5

Simply place an empty file called .nomedia in each directory you want to hide. Don't forget the dot in front of the name.

Hi guys
After i updated from 2.2.2 to 2.3.4, the gallery on the version is all messed up, ie, no folders etc.
Everything is sorted via date......
Can anyone recommend a gallery viewer, or a fix, to be able to view the gallery via folders? (It does not provide that option when i go to sorting)
It makes it difficult searching for images located in different folders....
Thanks!

The first thing I do when installing a new rom is to let it build system files and then I open market once, accept the agreement, then reboot. Second thing? Freeze stock galleries and install quickpic.

Try creating an empty .no media file in the covers folder then rebooting the tablet.

Just to clarify the above poster, get a file browser app if you already don't have one installed (I use EsFileExplorer).
1. Navigate to the folder where you have all your audiobooks stored
2. Tap the menu button > New > File
3. Rename the file ".nomedia" (no quotes)
You don't need to put anything in the file and now all the files in that folder will not show up in your gallery.
Thanks u guys rock!

I can't seem to find a solution to my problem. Please see attachment. Basically, I cannot use my camera or gallery because of a No External Storage Available message. I wanted to take pictures and clips over the holiday period (I haven't got a proper camera)... I would be very grateful for any help! Cheers!:fingers-crossed:
It would help if you attached a screenshot of your Storage screen in Settings. That will show what is available and what is used. Perhaps we can find your memory hog.

Your images folder might have been deleted or is corrupted, maybe a cause for gallery and your camera not finding it.

Hi! No, it's the 8GB model, one of the very first batch...
I may very well have deleted the image folder when I was having problems with the update to 4.2. It would be great if you could tell me where to put it back (under pictures?) and what to name it. Thanks!

Storage/emulated/0/dcim/camera
Is the path mine uses on stock 4.2.1. You might want hook it up to a computer to find it unless you have a file manager.

Oh, using ES File Explorer I can see that I have this folder, and I even have some pictures in it taken before the 4.2 update. For some reason my camera and gallery can't access it. Any ideas?

have you tried using other cameera applications or quickpic and if so what were the results?
Maybe try to empty the folder onto your pc,maybe it is set to only use so much of the memory.
I have never used my camera so I can only make suggestions.
Sorry I cant help more.

go into apps in settings and clear galarys data and cache, force stop it to.
if all elce fails you could fastboot flash 4.2.1, after backing everything up with titanium backup.

I have close to 1 GB related to "Pictures, Videos" in Storage that I cannot for the life of me find. How do I find what it is Android is determining to be "Pictures, Videos".
Thanks y'all
Well, you look in every folder for images and videos. That's what Android takes as pictures and videos
In other words. Download a file manager. Like ES file

I have Root Explorer and CM's file manager. unless i'm missing something, I don't see an easy way to find all "Picture/Video" files.

Amazingly enough I found it
It's called ".thumbdata3--1967290299". It's about 500 MB and there's two of them. What in the world are these?
Probably cached pictures.
Usually if you delete them.. They are still their if you look in the right places.
