After using HTC Magic for 1.5 years I'm seriously considering getting a new phone. My two main options are Nexus S and DHD.
How are your phones treating you guys? Would you recommend going with a DHD or the S?
Sent from my Gingerbread on Sapphire using Tapatalk
You asking this in the Desire HD forum, what kind of answer do you expect?
Go with the Desire HD of course lol
I've thought about grabbing a nexus but there it's just too little going on in their development thread to make me want to. I'm wondering if, in these challenging economic times, a lot of devs are sticking with the nexus one. After all the nexus s is only a small jump ahead in spec.
The worst thing about the nexus s is that there are no sense roms. I've come to the conclusion that sense is just better. I mean vanilla aosp doesn't even include a fm radio and this is 2011. What are you thinking Google?
Someone swyped my idea.
By using default Sense as your launcher you gain two things:
1. HTC Widgets
2. General integrity with your phone UI
Main downsides of Sense:
1. Application space in home screen dock, you cannot add any application to Sense dock
2. Missing eye candy: e.g. home screen transition effects
3. General smoothness. Sense is actually very unsmooth. You might not realize this if you haven't used LauncherPro, which is the smoothest launcher at the moment
Only real thing I lose by not using Sense are HTC widgets. But I've found a corresponding replacement for every HTC widget I want. Even the lovely "Sync All" widget.
So basically if you look at the pros and cons of Sense UI, it really makes me laugh when people say "Sense just makes sense"

Funny you say that. I find launcher pro to be slow and a bit buggy at times. Everytime I have flashed a aosp rom, I have always gone back to stock HTC sense. I find it better and has a nice UI and integration.
As for the question, having asked in the desire HD forum, your going to get a biuased lean towards the desire hd of course. Having said that desire HD ftw .
A few weeks ago I was due an upgrade so was in a similar position - DHD, Nexus S or Galaxy S. On paper each one had things I liked so I did a few weeks worth of reading reviews, checking out videos, checking them out in a shop, looking at development progress on XDA etc.
In the end I went for the DHD, mainly down to:
1/ Build quality. HTC build some very nice phones, the DHD being no exception. It has a nice weight to it and feels like the expensive piece of equipment that it is. The SGS and Nexus S on the otherhand, felt like cheap iPhone copies. Really quite plasticy and flimsy looking.
2/ Sense UI. It's what sold me on HTC phones in the 1st place and I love how it integrates with the phone. I've always dabbled with other ROMs and launchers but in the end I'm back on Sense. It's not perfect but using a custom ROM like Android Revolution HD you can get it super smooth and if transition animations are your thing then you can add those too... along with most other mods and customisations.
3/ RFS, GPS issues and lag. Go check the SGS section for details.
4/ Samsung seem to release phones and then stop supporting them, whereas HTC seem to be a little bit better at this.
That's probably as unbiased as I can be... so go buy a DHD and well see you back here soon
The NS has got week specs..... its just a N1 with a samoled screen and a SGS inside lol

the NS has nothing to do with samsung after it leaves the factory, its the official google developer device, so all updates and support come straight from google.

Haha... no worries, it's easily done.
If I had a £1 for every post I've misread I could buy us all a new DHD
Tbh Sense was the thing that got me sold on HTC phones in the beginning, now after 3 different HTC phones and more experience with flashin and other apps I defenatly cant say i have not found any better launcher app than ADW EX, its so many custom ways to use it, including expanding number of apps on homescreen, dock layout of choice etc, the best is if you get yourself Beautiful widgets or simular and other cool stuff, you can match HTC widgets easy, the thing i miss is really the deep integration with the apps and OS none other has managed.
DHD without a doubt. I find HTC kit extremely reliable. I think the nexus S looks too plasticy.
I had 4 nexus s phones and all had faults... in the end I gave up and got a wonderful HD.. best move ever... The nexus s is the sexiest phone in the world, but performance wise it isn't a scratch on the HD. Of my 4 nexus s, 3 had weird colour changes on the screen due to the curved glass and one had really poor wifi, the weird colours was strange, one had a piss green hue, and another had a purple haze, not at all like the cool blue of the Samsung galaxy s. But my 4 phones was from the first batch The DHD is a 9/10 and the nexus s is a 7/10. And the 7 points is because its the prettiest phone in the whole universe

Cyanogen 7 has 4 types of lockscreens you can choose from:
Sliding tab, Rotary, Rotary Revamped and Lense.
As far as the overclocking, it's dependent on the processor.
Please keep in mind that the clock speed is not very relevant comparative to performance.
If you could overclock the Evo's core to 3.0 ghz, without it burning up, it wouldn't necessarily have any better performance than the Evo's core has at 1.19 ghz.

I love the Sense 3.0 lockscreen. It's beauty is in it's simplicity. It's been very reliable and snappy for me.
I tried Widgetlocker for months and never loved it. I started using it so I could unlock my phone with the volume rocker which I still wish was a feature of all roms. I didn't like that I could not see who was calling me when using Widgetlocker to protect against accidentally answering phonecalls. And when I didn't have it set that way, I'd accidentally answer or deny phone calls when I pulled my phone out of my pocket.
My biggest gripe is still that we have to reach up to the top and use the small, hand to press, power button to turn out phone on. The phone is too long and it's just not a smooth process when unlocking your phone quickly.
Try sense 3.0 best lock screen IMHO

I'm using CyanogenMod-7.1.0-Supersonic on Evo 4g.
Can anybody tell me how to backup the default lockscreen or direct me in the right direction?
i have the desire HD, my friend has the samsung, his screen looks absolutely amazing, its so clear, crisps and clean, my desire looks cloudy and nowhere near as bright side by side, do us HTC users have a rom that is going to make my phone as nice without having to pay for a whole new handset? i do find the sense overlay to be messy now, it was good at one point but now its just muddled...
I came from original galaxy s to my inspire and have always thought the display was horrible??
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
Well Yes and No.
hardware wise
The screen is just plain LCD(or Slcd ) and will never be as vibrant as galaxy s2' S Amoled screen which is able to produce deep blacks and deeper colours.
BUT
Software wise: sense has this "glossy" theme which can be arguably clunky and ugly at times. The s2 A's software interface is more streamlined and less cluttered, which probably is more pleasing to the eye.
You can have a similar UI to the samsung S2 by downloading AOSp roms like CM7 OR MIUI.IMO this makes the screen seem "less cloudy" . Check it out at the development section?

currently running a miui rom, but just seems like an iphone port, have tried cyanogen before, but couldnt be bothered to tweak the home screen, saw some beauties around but dont have time to do much.
maybe i`ll book a week off work and have a mess around...
cheers guys.
try reducing your screen dpi if its supported by your rom. Its somehow a new handset experience...
To the Amoled Screens: my brother has the galaxy s and a friend the s2...both screens i find ether blueish or greenish. which they told me came with time.

Hi,
i am waiting for my nexus 4 to be shipped soon, but i am currently not sure how i will like jelly bean without any theme,
i have been using htc's sense on my sensation for quite a a while, about 19 months and the main things i like are the widgets, the contacts and phone theme and the messages app theme,
my questions is that is there a custom rom that is similar to the htc's sense or is the standard google rom ok ?
just worried as i may miss my sensation too much.
thanks in advance.

my ship time was like 6-7 weeks, its been about 2 and half so far
i just cant wait any more!
I went Sensation => One X => Nexus 4
I have to say though, I always preferred AOSP to Sense, so I'm not in the same boat as you. The only thing I vaguely miss is the weather clock widget, but I replaced it with something else.
I'm also coming from sensation.
Had HTC for the past few years just because of sense.
But after getting this phone, I will never look back again. You can find the things you need on play store to replace those HTC widgets.
AOSP is a whole other experience. Better than you imagine when used to a HTC phone.
In my opinion, I can't stand manufacturer UIs and would rather have the stock theme any day.
Use Beautiful Widgets if you want a HTC like clock weather widget.

note: BW is on sale right now so get it before it goes back to full price! definitely worth it.
Coming from a few HTC phones(look at sig).
This thing is blazing fast compared to my Sensation, it's like when I went from my g1 to mytouch 3gs, but with a larger gap. This thing is worth every penny if you ask me. The design, speed, and price are unbeatable.
I use to be crazy about Sense also but after awhile you get use to the much nicer stock JB UI and its widgets.
coming from mytouch4g. definitely prefer HTC widgets over stock widgets but i prefer AOSP performance over HTC widgets
Always owned mostly HTC phones (HTC Magic, HTC Evo 3D, HTC Amaze) only cuz I really liked Sense, especially the widgets. Had an Sony Ericsson Arc for a while, which made me realize how much I actually liked Sense.
Using the N4 now, I've found replacements for most of the HTC widgets, except I really miss the monthly calendar widget where I can see the whole month.
Using Jorte as an alternative but it's not as pretty as the HTC sense widget. Also miss the stock widget, but that's not as important as the calendar IMHO.
i mis the contact book from HTC, other stuff you can fine tune for yourself.
Nothing is better than stock.
Love my Nexus 4.......except for camera....One X camera is great!

I have exactly the same problem.
So far haven't seen a month widget that could match the looks and usability of he htc calendar widget. Would love to know if there is one that could match it?
I have SPB mobile shell 3d and HD widgets.
SPB runs and looks real good on the Nexus 4 so in terms of widgets, and looks I substitute most things I used in sensation, with those 2.
The only thing I miss and can't find decent substitute for is the contacts app, and WiFi calling.
Note: WiFi calling was a T-Mobile specific thing.

i really miss my One S picture frame widget .. i used to have a collage of hoes now i gotta swipe one by one to see them it's kind of depressing. . and the evernote widget sense used was awesome how you could flip through the notes . . i think sense just looked prettier but i'm happy with the N4 =)
Sooo many people miss things from sense
I think we need to pay a developer to port sense onto nexus 4
That would be awesome.
I think I will need to find a few alternatives .
Thanks to everyone

HTC Sensation as well. Best thing I ever did was flash Virtuous Inquisition. AOSP style but still Sense framework so everything works as it should.
Only thing about AOSP is the dispute between Google and Facebook over who owns contact information. As a result, in stock form, Facebook contact numbers don't sync. Considering I relied on Facebook for 90% of my contact numbers originally......
But using Google Voice now for SMS, my primary contacts are all with Google as well now.
Not sure what it is about HTC Sense that's a big deal.

I just hope they add 4x1 clock they removed in Sense 5. Missing it so much. Have used some alternatives but ain't satisfied.
Secondly, I can't understand why they removed WEATHER ANIMATION all together. That was one TOO AWESOME feature. Lock screen weather animation and as you unlock you'll get the animation again. That looked so damn beautiful.
Sense 5 is faster, YES, but has sacrificed the beauty.

Mike has a HTC One and it is running Sense 5.5
We were chatting last night on IRC last night and he divulged it has the same HBOOT and a slightly newer radio.
I won'r speculate on time lines but he proclaimed that ADB pull was alot faster than doing a nandroid.

Keeping 4x2 and removing 4x1 is kinda hard to understand. They'd have kept it along with a new black themed 4x1.
I tried a 3rd party app. EXACTLY IDENTICAL. Doesn't have the flip feature but it's identical to HTC's clock. ALAS! it had the text misplaced on our 1080p devices. Worked fine on my brother's 720p device. In fact, he is now using it on his Galaxy Mega.

Maybe get in touch with the app developer and see if they can add support for 1080p devices?
I'm curious to play around with the Dual Capture mode on the camera. It's one thing that S4 users can rub in my face. I think it would be interesting to use.
As far as potentially being a One Max exclusive... We are on XDA-Developers. It will be available on the One regardless of what they might (but probably not) exclusively release it on.
It will not be One Max exclusiv. The 4.3 update for the international HTC One was delayed with the express purpose of adding sense 5.5 to it before rolling it out to One owners. (this has been confirmed by a HTC exec, if you search for it)
My guess is that they will "launch" sense 5.5 with the One Max (more to talk about when presenting it) and immediately / soon after, launch the 4.3 / sense 5.5 update for the One after it's had its prime time with the One Max.
