galaxy s 2 vs desire HD question - Desire HD General

i have the desire HD, my friend has the samsung, his screen looks absolutely amazing, its so clear, crisps and clean, my desire looks cloudy and nowhere near as bright side by side, do us HTC users have a rom that is going to make my phone as nice without having to pay for a whole new handset? i do find the sense overlay to be messy now, it was good at one point but now its just muddled...

I came from original galaxy s to my inspire and have always thought the display was horrible??
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium

Well Yes and No.
hardware wise
The screen is just plain LCD(or Slcd ) and will never be as vibrant as galaxy s2' S Amoled screen which is able to produce deep blacks and deeper colours.
BUT
Software wise: sense has this "glossy" theme which can be arguably clunky and ugly at times. The s2 A's software interface is more streamlined and less cluttered, which probably is more pleasing to the eye.
You can have a similar UI to the samsung S2 by downloading AOSp roms like CM7 OR MIUI.IMO this makes the screen seem "less cloudy" . Check it out at the development section?

currently running a miui rom, but just seems like an iphone port, have tried cyanogen before, but couldnt be bothered to tweak the home screen, saw some beauties around but dont have time to do much.
maybe i`ll book a week off work and have a mess around...
cheers guys.

try reducing your screen dpi if its supported by your rom. Its somehow a new handset experience...
To the Amoled Screens: my brother has the galaxy s and a friend the s2...both screens i find ether blueish or greenish. which they told me came with time.

Week off of work is not needed just look at all the themes miui has to off on miui.is and miuiandroid and you will be happy currently I'm on sense 3.5 but thinking to go back its alot faster and themes are endless

[REQUEST] Galaxy S Vibrant/Captivate build?

I hate to start a new thread, but I'm sure I am not the only one that wants to request a Galaxy S build. Preferably Vibrant, but Captivate would work too.
I hope devs look into this as IMO the Vibrant's Touch wiz interface would give everyone something different to look at. I personally like it over Stock, and MOST definitely over Sense.
Just a thought...
I'm hoping that there will be an end to the many slightly different versions of sense and hope we will see galaxy s, droid, streak builds looked into soon.

Hmm!
I think that we may not need a build for this but an .apk for Touchwiz that we can install over a Clean Stock Rom.
I noticed one on the forum a while ago.
If this is of course what you are meaning:I never had a Galaxy S before and don't know what else it got.

I do remember it was only about 2 ~ 3 mb and considering the size maybe a lot of things where removed to make it compatible with other devices.
Ok,I will Google a little to see what's the Galaxy S got

why do you prefer the Samsung software over the all mighty sense UI !!!
al mighty? the sense ui is hideous. For me personally, i cant stand having a 240dpi on a 4.3" screen. Even though 180 sounds worse, thats the setting we change it to for icons to seem like the actually fit on the screen.
Also, why do we need 10 versions of Sense? Why not have the option for the TouchWiz interface. It's fresh and something new to look at. Plus, there are little things like the lockscreen, when if you have missed calls or messages, you drag a puzzle piece into the blank spot that matches what you want to instantly view when you unlock it.
their widgets are also very nice. anywho, i would just enjoy something different. And others would too.
I agree to what he said
agreed it would be a nice change of pace, always good to see something new.
just my opinion...
plus i know the vibrant has an incredibly high frame rate
well.. i had a galaxy S... the first thing done was to use launcherpro and get rid of that hideous touchwiz!
check the forums of those devices... people are asking for vanilla or sense roms
I had a Vibrant, touchwiz was the laggiest piece of software I've used and changed the whole android experience.
i want this cant wait to somebody pull this out there hats

To be fair on both sides , the new Sense on Desire HD has lower dpi for menus, etc so it looks much much cleaner ... and since HTC seems to have recognized that aspect I am sure in future the launcher and widgets will also be improved
+1 , i would deffinatly donate, the main reason i want a captivate/vibrant rom is for the video player! my friends vibrant video player plays a 480p .avi video flawlessly, while my hd2 plays it terribly while looking all blurry, but on my friends vibrant its sharp, i know theres a screen size diffrence but still it shouldnt make the movie look that much worse.
and im thinking the problem may be the media player cuz the ones ive tried dont go full screen like the vibrants
I sold my galaxy s for my hd2 and am so pleased I did as I now get to run sense ui or nexus builds. touch wiz was terrible iphone like and laggy. you can download some of the widgets from the galaxy s forum section but they are not a patch on htc sense widgets. The only good thing about the galaxy s build was its camera app

Exactly, once you actually use it, its terribly laggy and not very well put together. I can't blame you for wanting something new but I think everyone would get sick of it quick.

Some launchers I've collected from users here on XDA. The "Launcher2" is the 7-homescreen T-Mobile G2 launcher....exactly like the Nexus One launcher but with 7 screens instead of 5. You will need to remove the cooked-in launcher to install all but the TouchWiz launcher. Using Astro file manager, nav to the "System" > "App" folder and locate the launcher and delete it. Then do a reboot. *You will need to install Launcher Pro in the interim to have a launcher at bootup.*
You will want to make a backup of the whole Android build prior to deleting the cooked-in launcher in case the chosen one doesn't install.
The LG zips contain various widgets which will install even if the launcher doesn't.
i dont get it. lower dpi makes it crisp?!
less pixels per inch = better image?
im really confused.

The below explanation is based on what I was able to recall from good ol college days
WVGA Res - 480 pixels x 800 pixels
Screen Size - Whatever the HD2 has (too lazy to check )
Anyways the above 2 are fixed parameters. Now what dpi means literally is pixels per inch (lets not go into more details here)
So if you fit more pixel in a single inch of screen, effectively your widgets get less space on the screen to fit into. (DPI 240)
And if you put less pixels, the same widgets fit in less amount of space in screen so it looks like a higher res (DPI 180/200)
I hope I was able to convey what I meant

DHD or Nexus S

After using HTC Magic for 1.5 years I'm seriously considering getting a new phone. My two main options are Nexus S and DHD.
How are your phones treating you guys? Would you recommend going with a DHD or the S?
Sent from my Gingerbread on Sapphire using Tapatalk
You asking this in the Desire HD forum, what kind of answer do you expect?
Go with the Desire HD of course lol
I've thought about grabbing a nexus but there it's just too little going on in their development thread to make me want to. I'm wondering if, in these challenging economic times, a lot of devs are sticking with the nexus one. After all the nexus s is only a small jump ahead in spec.
The worst thing about the nexus s is that there are no sense roms. I've come to the conclusion that sense is just better. I mean vanilla aosp doesn't even include a fm radio and this is 2011. What are you thinking Google?
Someone swyped my idea.
By using default Sense as your launcher you gain two things:
1. HTC Widgets
2. General integrity with your phone UI
Main downsides of Sense:
1. Application space in home screen dock, you cannot add any application to Sense dock
2. Missing eye candy: e.g. home screen transition effects
3. General smoothness. Sense is actually very unsmooth. You might not realize this if you haven't used LauncherPro, which is the smoothest launcher at the moment
Only real thing I lose by not using Sense are HTC widgets. But I've found a corresponding replacement for every HTC widget I want. Even the lovely "Sync All" widget.
So basically if you look at the pros and cons of Sense UI, it really makes me laugh when people say "Sense just makes sense"

Funny you say that. I find launcher pro to be slow and a bit buggy at times. Everytime I have flashed a aosp rom, I have always gone back to stock HTC sense. I find it better and has a nice UI and integration.
As for the question, having asked in the desire HD forum, your going to get a biuased lean towards the desire hd of course. Having said that desire HD ftw .
A few weeks ago I was due an upgrade so was in a similar position - DHD, Nexus S or Galaxy S. On paper each one had things I liked so I did a few weeks worth of reading reviews, checking out videos, checking them out in a shop, looking at development progress on XDA etc.
In the end I went for the DHD, mainly down to:
1/ Build quality. HTC build some very nice phones, the DHD being no exception. It has a nice weight to it and feels like the expensive piece of equipment that it is. The SGS and Nexus S on the otherhand, felt like cheap iPhone copies. Really quite plasticy and flimsy looking.
2/ Sense UI. It's what sold me on HTC phones in the 1st place and I love how it integrates with the phone. I've always dabbled with other ROMs and launchers but in the end I'm back on Sense. It's not perfect but using a custom ROM like Android Revolution HD you can get it super smooth and if transition animations are your thing then you can add those too... along with most other mods and customisations.
3/ RFS, GPS issues and lag. Go check the SGS section for details.
4/ Samsung seem to release phones and then stop supporting them, whereas HTC seem to be a little bit better at this.
That's probably as unbiased as I can be... so go buy a DHD and well see you back here soon
The NS has got week specs..... its just a N1 with a samoled screen and a SGS inside lol

Haha... no worries, it's easily done.
If I had a £1 for every post I've misread I could buy us all a new DHD
Tbh Sense was the thing that got me sold on HTC phones in the beginning, now after 3 different HTC phones and more experience with flashin and other apps I defenatly cant say i have not found any better launcher app than ADW EX, its so many custom ways to use it, including expanding number of apps on homescreen, dock layout of choice etc, the best is if you get yourself Beautiful widgets or simular and other cool stuff, you can match HTC widgets easy, the thing i miss is really the deep integration with the apps and OS none other has managed.
DHD without a doubt. I find HTC kit extremely reliable. I think the nexus S looks too plasticy.
I had 4 nexus s phones and all had faults... in the end I gave up and got a wonderful HD.. best move ever... The nexus s is the sexiest phone in the world, but performance wise it isn't a scratch on the HD. Of my 4 nexus s, 3 had weird colour changes on the screen due to the curved glass and one had really poor wifi, the weird colours was strange, one had a piss green hue, and another had a purple haze, not at all like the cool blue of the Samsung galaxy s. But my 4 phones was from the first batch The DHD is a 9/10 and the nexus s is a 7/10. And the 7 points is because its the prettiest phone in the whole universe

Just got an INC

Moved over from the Droid X (where I had been running Apex). I'm pretty excited to have a nice smaller form factor (only complaint if any is that the screen isn't as bright as the X).
Where should I start looking to play with this? Im sure it will take me a while to catch up on what's happening in INC world.
Custom software. Coming from the Droid X, this is the real advantage of the Incredible in my opinion. I don't know how far you got into rooting, etc., with your DX, but if you hit that point of running into the bootloader, you're free
I'd suggest Cyanogen or MIUI if you want to run AOSP.
If you want to run Sense, Lou's Redemptive Revolution is fantastic, as is Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo.

If you haven't done so already, rooting is always good
Unrevoked makes it painless, just follow all the instructions exactly
Then I'm assuming you'll want a custom ROM...
There are 3 basic categories of Sense ROMs, Inc, Evo, and Z. Inc is based on the Incredible code, Evo is based on the Evo code, and Z is based on the Desire Z code. Functionally there isn't too big a difference between Evo and Inc ROMs, just be sure to get the Incredible port of a ROM if it was originally an Evo ROM. Z ROMs, however, have the new Sense interface, with native theme support, sound sets, etc. However, in the Z ROMs 720p video recording doesn't work, and they're generally slightly less stable than Inc/Evo ROMs. They are usually stable enough for daily use though, and offer the most features. From your Droid X experience, you probably know about a lot of the AOSP ROMs (CyanogenMod and the like) but the Incredible has some noteworthy ones, namely MIUI (iPhone and Android made babies) and the Liquid Metal ROM (port of the Acer Liquid Metal UI).
Have fun with your Incredible
Ah nice starter info guys thanks a lot! Flashing process the same to get back to stock like the X was with SFBs or this a different process now (could also be done with clockwork).
Also remember that you probably have an SLCD display vs. the original AMOLED displays. Although the rooting process is the same, kernels are different. Check my sig and a few of my previous posts for more explanation on this.
In a nutshell some of the kernels do not have the SLCD drivers, so everytime you flash a rom you are going to have to flash the appropriate kernel.
Cheers and welcome.
SLCD yes I have a issue with it and I have to be careful of what kernel is baked in since some of the baked in kernels will not let my phone boot! I always use Invisiblek #28/#34 for ASOP roms and I like Lous Kernels other roms!

This may sound like a stupid question but, have you turned off the automatic brightness and changing it manually? When I manually turn my brightness all the way up, I can barely stand to look at it.
No I have the brightness cranked up. It's quite a bit darker than the X screen.

Thanks. I haven't dived into any ROMs just yet, but certainly plan to. I'm trying to navigate around the very small differences coming form the X that I miss (mostly having to do with the address book).
Wow this is a little intimidating coming from just loading a zip file with clockwork. I better get my reading on.
I have a feeling you will like the incredible much better than the X. The most notable difference is that the bootloader is unlocked so you can change the kernel. There are many very nice roms for this phone, the most notable ones I've tried being CyanogenMod 6 and 7, Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo, and Skyraider. I haven't tried any of the others but I'm sure they are of the same quality I've came to expect.
I went the other way. It was soooooooo much smoother/easier to flash roms on an Inc. I mostly used miui and miss it BAD. I love the DX size but miss the options available with the Inc.

[POLL for ROMs] Who would like HoneySense and FlyerSense?

I don't have a G2 myself, but the G2 is a cousin of the myTouch 4G and the Desire HD, so I probably could port those two over, assuming someone is awesome enough to download ridiculously huge ROMs and test them to see how it goes. Does anyone want them?
Btw:
FlyerSense is a port of the HTC Flyer, currently available to the Desire HD and MT4G. The Stylus input doesn't work, for obvious reasons.
HoneySense is an HTC Sense 3.0 ROM with an intense Honeycomb theme, making it unique and, pretty damn sexy.
I would like both, it's always fun to try new roms. Siulmagic usually ported sense roms, but I have not seen any movement on either =/

The "magic pen" won't work on the G2. It requires a separate digitizer on the screen, in addition to the capacitive "touch" digitizer.
I'd love to see both ROMs. As mentioned, its always good to have more ROMs to choose from. But I'm curious how the Flyer ROM scales to a phone screen. I have a Flyer, and it seems that lots of Sense elements are scaled specifically for the larger screen size of a tablet. Also, the phone dialer was obviously added back in? But some things about the Flyer ROM are very nice, like the customizable dock (you can assign up to 3 apps in addition to the app tray and Customize buttons).

From sense to touchwiz

Always had HTC phones currently the desire HD,been waiting to see what they had to offer and have to say the x1 doesn't do it for me,so thinking of jumping ship and waiting for the SGS3.thing is I really like HTC sense. So to any former HTC user now with the SGS2 and touchwiz, how did you find the transition, can you get it set up to suit and what should I be aware of if making the jump once the SGS3 is out
sent from my leedroid powered Desire HD
Transition is pretty easy. I never found sense very useful (in a global way) but it's really pretty. I think touchwiz is the opposite. It's kind of ugly with all these shiny icons but it's discret and have a few cool features (especially around the notification bar).
Plus, TW is a lot snappier than sense used to be (didn't get to try newer HTC devices). I even find TW snappier than any launcher you can find on the market.
I moved from desire z to sgs2, and I must say that touchwiz was a big disappointment to me.
It's not hard to get used to touchwiz, but it will be hard to get used with the missing features, for me the most annoying thing was that the dial pad can not search after the second name, I mean if you want to search for "combat goofwing" and you type in the dial pad 4663 for "goof" it will not find anything.
Another annoying thing is that in the app drawer the apps are not sorted in alphabetical order, they are sorted in the install order, and you can move them around but I don't have the patience to move apps around, for me this makes apps harder to find.
I own this phone for a few mounts now and I used to it, but I still miss sense.
The hardware is great, I still can't believe how good the display is, everything works very smooth, but unfortunately touchwiz is light years behind sense.
Any way I'm sorry I didn't bought the sensation, but my next phone will definitely be a HTC.
You can always choose alphabetical listing option. Move to a custom ROM, the phone rocks.

Ditto for me, I think I will go buy a One S or X; there are just so many little things missing from touchwizz compared to sense ( I don't mean just the launchers but all the apps htc and samsung, include or modify); don't get me wrong touchwiz is not bad at all, especially compared to stock android but it's just not as good as sense.
Used to have a htc desire before my SGS2.. the only things I liked about sense 2.1 was the lockscreen that gives the caller/texter name at the bottom, instead of a little numbered flagged like touchwiz (being honest I know I could get widgetlocker and get that back but don't mind the sammy lockscreen that much) and I liked the screen unlock weather animations (which I have on my SGS2 courtesy of Beautiful Widgets)
The rest of sense wasn't that great, the contacts app is a little more intuitive than SGS2's but not really an issue
Oh, the touchwiz launcher is pretty useless, but I've been using LauncherPro since day 1
Beautiful widgets' superclock is just annoying, I disabled the animations because you see them everyone time you unlock unlike sense where you will only see it when the widget is visible. Also better in sense : keyboard (best touchscreen keyboard), friends pictures in the gallery, friendstream, sense unlockscreen with shortcuts, dialer, app drawers.
i dont really care because when i get a phone i just put cm on it')

I have an amaze 4g and my wife has the tmobile sgs2. We both are from the htc g2 running sense. She loves how simple TW is, but she says its missing quite a bit of things she liked, all little things but none the less missing them.
I my self hate TW seems like a child's launcher in a way.

I miss the dialer and contact screen from Sense. I can get everything else with some minor modifications and apps so it's not a big deal. Shame for the contacts and dialer though.
Touchwiz is fast, unobtrusive and smooth, but in stock form, very, very ugly and lacking in features.
Mind you I've always found HTC Android phones somewhat unresponsive and glitchy.
The only flavour of Android I get on with now is AOSP ICS. Its a big improvement to me. That said, my next phone might not be Android, I might give WP7 a go. I've had a few tries and it is starting to look like a fantastically polished OS, and flashing ROMs all the time is beginning to lose its appeal. It may not have the apps, or the flexibility, or capability, but it makes up for it in other ways.
I haven't seen or used sense, but I know how unfulfilling TW feels. For me, flashing and playing around with MI-UI did the trick. It's the perfect combination of neatness and usefulness. Combined with minor add-ons (such as a new keyboard, kernel, ...) it turns out to be the most stable and enjoyable rom I have ever used. Check it out (google miuandroid).
HTC all the way!
I had htc desire hd which i still have and love. I then got htc sensation and the missus got a sgs2 she hates the user interface and loves the htc user interface. If your looking for something that will in my opinion be comparable to the iphone then htc all the way.

For an iphone-ish look I strongly recommend the previously mentioned MIUI rom.
For me, I don't know. I couldn't do Sense. I liked the graphics and what not - but I found the user-interface a bit stubborn. Touchwiz was clean and simple.
I have the desire s and SII, and I like sense better than TW.
Sense feels like it's more developed than TW.
For me software htc > samsung and hardware htc < samsung.
So SII with sense would be great for me personally.

And I forgot to say, I came from a long series of HTC phones (diamond, touch pro, touch pro 2, wildfire, desire z), all of them are still in use today and work great, guess wich phone needed to go to service becsause microusb port mallfunction after a few mount of use... exactly the sgs2.

I think it's a pretty tough choice between the X and S, they both have their pros and cons (S has the more powerful CPU(in spite of the 4 cores of the tegra3) and AMOLED; X the more powerful GPU, more storage and higher DPI)
