List of Applications Safe to Remove - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

I came across this list and thought I would share it with the rest of the community.
http://goo.gl/yWDoI
I am a nut about keeping my process count as low as possible both for performance and battery life so I have disabled some more apps not on this list but I will continue testing the stability before I post them on the forums.

Nice list, thanks for sharing.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app

Is that list finished it doesn't look like it.

It's a work in progress. I have a lot more apps frozen on my device but I am going to keep testing to make sure it is stable before I post them.

Do you delete the .odex as well?

Clock 1.0 is safe to remove, it is not the system app for time management, it is just the stock clock widget.

GUIDE: Make your Hero faster (GSM+CDMA)

Hey, im pretty new to all of this, so pardon my "mess-ups"
First off, I want to make clear that i take no liability for what happens to your phone, but all of this is relatively safe, so don't worry.
It concerns all the people who are worrying about Hero "lag" (which is pretty much everyone) and of you want to make it faster, take a look at what I did.
Okay, enough with the talk. Lets get started.
Here's some prerequisites that you need to have to speed up your hero:
Advanced Task Killer (Free, Android Market)
Launcher Pro (Free, Android market, but paid version is better)
(Optional: ROOT: You can do this using super one click:
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...d-samsung-captivate-with-super-one-click-app/ )
For optional, root your phone before proceeding.
The main key to Hero lag (in my opinion) is HTC sense. If you install launcher pro from android market, you remove sense, but get a nice, simple launcher from android market. Play with it by going into preferences. I currently have five screens, 3D app drawer, and a a 5 and 7 app drawer speed. Its REALLY fast. With the paid version, you can get app resizing, and more widgets. Thats about it. oh, and did i mention you get a LANDSCAPE HOME SCREEN?!?! (girly shrieks)
As for the Advanced Task Killer, download it, and put the widget on your homescreen, and click it everytime your phone lags.
If you have rooted your phone, install terminal emulator, and follow this guide (http://jaxov.com/2010/09/how-to-remove-stock-default-android-apps-easily/), and remove all stock apps that you never use.
If you have any extra tips, feel free to comment below.
(P.S), if you have any way to get of the keyboard lag while texting, please comment, because even with no vibrate/sound it sometimes lags)
(P.P.S) This method works on any ROM. Use it with CM6 for ultimate awesomeness.
Don't use a task killer, use Autokiller instead. Not a task killer, but does allow you to kill problematic apps if need be (2.2 allows you to do this as well).
If you are unrooted and use lp or adw, sense is not removed. If you go that route, remove all widgets an icons from your sense screens. Also, no task killer. They cause more problems than what they're worth. Use the running apps to close anything.

Yeah, they don't remove the Sense framework, just the launcher. If you're going to stay unrooted, it definitely helps.
The most sure-fire way to speed up the phone is to root and run a custom ROM. Any custom ROM will be faster than a stock release thanks to the developer's tweaks. If you want to stay closer to stock, look into nfinitefx45's ROMs.
Agreed with others, don't use a task killer. Only use the root-only "AutoKiller".
Question: what do you mean by "use running apps to close anything". Sorry im sorta noobish at this, but what problems DO task killers cause? Because i haven't had any.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
they can close things that don't need to be closed. Also, they constantly run in the background, taking up ram and precious cpu cycles (which we don't have a lot to spare... lol). Using auto killer, you can change your ram free settings, and let android kill what isn't needed to free up ram. I run it at optimum on cm6... it's the lowest I could run and keep everything very snappy, and any higher and apps close as soon as I exit them, killing my multi tasking. (i.e., I can exit my browser, send a text, and when I go back to browser it doesn't have to reload the page)
App Killers have their uses; but...

As I understand it, Android manages its processes differently than many people are used to thinking about. More free memory isn't necessarily a good thing in Android. So when you kill all Apps, you're throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Sure, you might get that one misbehaving app, but there are all kinds of well-behaving app casualties. Mostly you should use a task manager to view stats on resource usage to identify bad apps and then get rid of them.
(sorry, no url link for n00bs) lifehacker.com/5650894/android-task-killers-explained-what-they-do-and-why-you-shouldnt-use-them
Also, yes Sense is much slower than cm6 and I haven't even been tempted to go back.
OHHH! yea thats why android 1.5 always crashed when killing tasks. Thanks. So whats a better way to free up memory? Oh, and does anyone have a way of launcher pro actually working with Cm6? Because it seems to sorta do the animations and tasks in a "play by play" sort of way. Thats why i reverted back to stock rom. Sorry about all the questions, im still pretty new to the whole android thing.

[Q] RoyalGinger V1.5

What do you want to see or not see in RoyalGinger V1.5?
Like I said in the actual RoyalGinger thread on the Development page we wanted to pull the community and see what you guys like and dont like and what you want to see and what you dont want to see. I know at least for me I might try other Roms especially for testing but I always come back to RoyalGinger, This little red head has in my opinion everything a Rom needs and everything a Rom user wants. So just to make it more of the Peoples Rom we wanted to see what you guys like and what you guys dont like.
So please keep it short and simple if you want to see a specific thing like a Theme or a Mod please include the link to the thread.
It will help us find what we are looking for and get to making your wishes happen. If you want something just let us know we will honestly try our hardest to meet every wish of the community for V1.5. If we dont get your idea into 1.5 I will let you know and let you know if it is possible and if it will be coming on a later release.
Thank You all for your support.

Do you mean the stock clock that flips with the Weather? if so I cant include the one made by HTC cause that is a Sense Only item and it is not Open Source, But I am pretty sure I can accommodate your request with something. So great suggestion it will be in the next release.

Yes, it is that one. No wonder the question has been asked a few times on the net (when I Googled) and no one seems to know.
Ok, no problem. There are a few other apps out there that are similar. But not quite. Thanks though.
Top request if at all possible would be the original camera. Picture quality is better and speed is wayyyy faster.
DSP Manager
Car Dock (even though it’s available as apks)
Genius Button (I personally like it)
Ability to mute camera sound

Personally, I like this Rom as is... Though I moved on to using Royal Mint as my daily just because of the sense look... Love the work TeamRoyal... I have the zip, and a backup with all my most used apps for EVERY Rom I have ran across with the TeamRoyal name on it...

1. Ability to receive MMS view like on stock froyo.
I hit download, and it rarely works. Stock it normally already has picture showing, instead of hitting download.
2. A big pickup, although i don't think it is possible, would be to add date along with clock in status bar.
3. Calendar similar to stock calendar, which is default month view.
4. I love the themes with battery display % options.
BTW, you guys are most excellent!
royalknight, hope you gets to feeling better, brohim....
all in all, fantastic rom, but.... (and since you're asking), this is what i would like added:
(1) stock mt4g calendar (pink in color i believe) because there's more options than the one included with RG (ie. ability to have agenda view when executed). if it's tied to sense and can't be ported to RG, then no worries.
(2) use of the genius button with dragon dictation (already mentioned). i'm not sure if i'm the minority here, but i used that app a lot.
(3) desk dock/car dock (already mentioned).
(4) stock camera (already mentioned).
not sure if there's anything else that this rom needs as i'm sure the more you add, the better chance it will become slower...
The problem with the "stock" apps you are all referring to from the original rom, is that they require sense frameworks to function. Unless HTC open sources sense, we may never be able to make it happen. (doesn't mean we can't try )
I think this should stay as close to stock Google as possible.
By trying to add in all this sense stuff... why don't you guys just use a sense rom and install the gingerbread launcher. That's basically what you want this rom to be.
I enjoy this rom because of how minimal it is. Please keep sense junk out.

People's request in AOSP roms are always sense related add on's. Launcher pro has some good alternatives for sense widgets and so forth. But I agree, keep this rom bare and clean in AOSP standards. Although I would like it if you guys added Torch app back on
And I do have a question, I love the rover theme included, but I feel like that actual battery percentage decreases my battery life by a lot everytime I use that theme. Any way you can take out that battery percentage out in the middle of that circle?

The battery life decreases due to the broadcast message required every time it changes a percentage and has to call a new image to be displayed.

man bummer... i love that theme but thats a killer for me. anyway you knwo how to take it out?
A completely blacked out (inverted them would be really nice) Kind of like the the terminal settigns, but with maybe more feel and texture than those. I do a lot of night use, that would be good. I like the terminal ones, but some things completely get lost in the transition. Now I am asking for too much!
This rom is so customizable, and now that I have a clean install, the fc have for the most part disappeared, and I have not even thought about flashing stock, like I normally did.

10-4, just wasn't sure how feasible it was... it's not a deal breaker if none of those happen, but he asked... have a good one, option...
thought the stock camera was a part of the sense framework as well, could be wrong.
My main request is to have a ROM specific theme. I switch ROMs a lot and after flashing lots of ROMs now on different phones (I'm the go-to guy at work now), I like the aesthetic touches a lot of devs put on their ROMs. You guys are adding more and more tweaks in this regard, so I doubt this even needs to be a request, but it's really cool to see those extra touches. After seeing gingerbread on so many different phones now, I've come to learn how unimpressive it is visually. Using the theme engine could then satisfy the themers out there, giving them the option to use what they want, but allow you guys to offer the Royal Theme that makes the ROM your own. I've also seen things like boot animation/fonts/optional app install scripts written into the settings. Things like that offer customization within the ROM and help it to stand out from AOSP GB.

Little update on DarkyNote

As my thread has been locked in the development section and the moderator hasnt answered my PM i thought i'd post here a little update as how the rom is progressing/looking.
As you can see most of the theming is done, still need a few tweaks to really get rid of all that samsung blue and also theme the messaging, dialer and contacts. Currently working on a very extended Power menu with a lot more functions than the standard reboot, recovery and download. Also you'll notice 11 scrollable toggles along the top of the pull down menu which when long pressed launches the individual settings menu of that toggle.
Cheers for looking and after adding the usual darkys ram hacks, tweaks n mods we should soon be ready for a release.

big,big,big!!!
im glad to saay epiiiiiiiiiiiiic, thats sick soo sick, looking forward to it, one thing though i guess if you can make a seprate theme flashable via CWM, total Black Will Be Cool as well, im not a fan of green actually, but like your roms, also will you make it 240 dpi, clear widgets etc..
Extended powermenu done, moved tabs in contacts etc to the bottom as I personally find it easier on a big phone lol, transparent dialer, little more themeing then will be posting up the rom

I am really interested in your Extended Menu you are talking about
call recording feature
can you please give thought to including call recording functionality via proper kernel for this rom and the mod itself baked in would be much appreciated.
sincerely appreciate all that you guys do!
We will be releasing a beta rom to begin with can't believe its taking so long to upload ffs lol.. all stock apps are left in for now etc and our darky tweaks and hacks.
The people that choose to download and test it we'd love feedback and then will begin taking requests for addons and modifications. Future builds will include the popular ones whereas all the updates will be available as flashable seperates. The rom isnt completely finished looks wise but its as close as we can get it to be able to release quick a stable rom that you can use everyday while we continue to finish it to.the usual darky standard.
Promise the release will be here within 24 hours

Well its running quick and smooth.. no noticeable lag.
Just currently uploading the last RC version make sure this one installs smoothly this time and if so will be uploading it here for u all to test.

Ok sounds good, some may think it look good order may think otherwise (for the green), that is all matter of personnal preference, BUT for our nice screen and the life of it led could you please make a version without green but blue for ex.
Because it will really more quickly have a "kind of burning effects" on our screen to have static green spot (the green and red life / best result for led is shorter than for the blue led for ex.)
Else contact and other tweaks looks promising (maybe port also from SGS some optionnal/customizable good lockscreen)
looks awesome
We've always had a green theme for the darkyrom so that will stick but our visual modders are working hard getting the darkyota app working on the note so complete vusual customisation will be available to you. Also just as a side note most professionals agree that its actually blue that causes most damage (there is a lengthy thread on this in our forums) though you would have to have the phone on 24 hours a day for nearly 4 years before you would notice anything on sansungs amoled screens

[Q] ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 vs ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0

Forces your home launcher into memory:
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 or ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0
...someone may have a very short explanation ?
What means each one ?
Thanks
Hi
If you search taming the OOM killer on Google you will find a lot of information about this.. Linux as specific way to address low memory conditions and android I believe uses it with some more specific feature.. For what I understand the higher the value the more chances the process will be released from memory also depending for how long the app stayed in memory unused.... So having it to one I believe would make it release sooner than zero.. I believe you can go further bellow with negative value. Also have a look for minfreemanager on market and minfreemanager in general on Google.
The way android manages memory somehow puzzles me... It's probably very clever... But find it unnecessarily kills app sometimes...
People say ICS as a much better memory management than HC having also GT 8.9 with ICS rom it seems to be the case.. Less memory used overall less app unnecessarily killed for what I saw comparing to HC...
This is why..... I can't wait having ICS on the 7.7....
Sent from my GT-P6800 using xda premium
I don't claim to understand the task cleaner completely and I agree it does seem to kill tasks sometimes when there isn't any need to free up memory, but here is some interesting investigation and a way to customize the memory thresholds at which it will decide to kill various types of tasks.

The sense of my question is:
Which of two "lines" we can use for better, smoother scrolling between homescreens .
=1 is supposed to keep the launcher in memory. But it doesn't help on my pad anyway. After exiting another application, the launcher is empty and has to redraw the icons, widgets etc.
Sent from my GT-P6800 using Tapatalk
I would agree it is not to improve scrolling performance but attempt to try avoiding your launcher to be released from memory... A lower value tries to delay the memory manager to kill the launcher.
IMO this setting only does not help much..as I use it set to 0...Tweaking with minfreemanager does help a bit though but at some point getting back to your launcher you will see it refreshing icons/widget... ICS might be better in that respect...

Is it worth rooting ?

Sent from my XT1032 using xda premium
as always, yes.
What do u think is the benefits m8 for rooting the note 7 not worried about voiding warranty ? Just have rooted other devices in the past and haven't seen much difference m8 apart from titanium , sixasis controller etc etc just interested in other views really pleased with the note 7
Sent from my XT1032 using xda premium
With root you can customize the look to whatever you want with xposed plugins, you can backup your apps with titanium backup, you can use audio modifying apps like Viper4Android, better support for 3rd party markets such as aptoide, better access to terminal emulator, you can set custom clock speeds with setcpu or trickster mod. I would say yes its worth it. especially with xposed since its amazing and it allows you to just about anything if you find the right plugins.
Cheers for the reply and input m8
Sent from my XT1032 using xda premium
YES, I would argue that a device is not even worth using without root. Root gives you total control over your system allowing your device to be more customizable. With root alone you can use apps like:
titanium backup - backup apps, remove bloatware, create flashable zips, freeze system services, and everything else involving app management.
xposed framework - a framework with modules that give control over android which rivals many ROMs.
Busybox - gives slimmed down version of gnu core libs on android, more advanced alternstives like gnu core libs have also been developed
Botbrew - install a minimal debian over android , adds dpkg/apt support.
GMD gesture control - replace navbar with gestures and create gesture shortcuts on android
Overclocking - Need I say more about how much faster you could make an already fast device?
Adaway, adfree - Quite a few root adblockers
AFWall - block apps from having internet access
Xprivacy module - block all permissions or feed false data.
Gamekiller - can be used to change memory values for game credit integers. Unlimited gold in apps with in app purchases.
DSploit - metasploit for android
Those are just a few things you can do.
Really found ur reply good and interesting especially listing some of the apps I hadent heard off what apps r u using on ur note 7 m8
