Recently Google has announced Android 4.1 (code named Jelly Bean) at their I/O conference.
I don't think Samsung will update our devices with 4.1.
So what are your thoughts on this?
If they do, it will be in 2 years when nobody cares about it anymore.
:/
Why wait for Samsung when we have nearly fully functioning CM9, meaning we can have fully functioning AOSP as well. What would be better than an AOSP JB build?

Why would we not get it? It's a "Small" update that basically just builds off of ICS (Which our devices came with). I seriously doubt it will take longer than 6 months to get it, or if we our lucky we will get a dev port long before then.

This is what I was hoping would happen, I read that you were trying to build us a straight from AOSP build which would basically give us the ability to go straight to JB when it is released. The GNexus was rather easy to port over without even having code so hopefully other devices should have a rather easy time as long as they have AOSP for ICS working.
Also, I think as long as we get fully functioning JB I would much rather have this tablet over the Nexus7 so my hands (And wallet) is in your hands devs! =P

The GTab2 is very similar to the Galaxy Nexus from a hardware perspective, and given that AOSP is almost fully functional minus a few trivial bugs, it should be quite easy to get stock Jelly Bean going once the source is out.
The lack of the MicroSD slot on the tablet is a huge deal breaker for me for the Nexus 7 tablet as I have already found some stuff that complains about a lack of space. Given that it is being marketed as a media/gaming device, it won't take long before the internal storage is filled with content for offline use, even if you have the 16GB version. It's a slight PITA to put stuff on the SD card on our tablets, but at least storage is easily expandable.

That's exactly how I feel, when I setup my tablet I installed Max Payne, GTAIII, and Shadowgun and just some other various apps (None bigger than 50mb). After doing all that I tried to copy my music straight to the device (~3.5 GB) and it wouldn't fit, luckily I had a 32GB microSD card but if I didn't what would I have to live without? That's a decision I don't want to have to make.

I'm trying to get a Nexus 7 dump to look at. I don't think the Galaxy Nexus stuff will work because it is xhdpi and we are hdpi. Hoping that the Nexus 7 is hdpi, or it could cause some issues trying to port one of the JB dumps.

Makes sense, from what I heard the Nexus 7 uses 260 DPI, so it would be HDPI. Good luck!

Couldn't we just scale it differently? Nexus 7 stuff shouldn't work because uts completly different except for dpi ...
I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung didn't come out with a new tab in the next few months. I just wish they would offer a touch wiz rom or a google experience rom choice to make updates really fast if you choose to use the google rom. I would buy all Samsung devices if that were the case.
I think we could get Jelly Bean because it isnt a huge update like 2.3 to 4.0.
But even if samsung doenst provide 4.1, the Cyanogenmod Dudes will do it.

Samsung doesn't have an issue with updating their non-carrier locked devices. Their phones and tablets tend to be some of the first updated to the next OS. However, their carrier locked devices take forever to get updated, if they get updated.
I hope Samsung sees the light and gets this update done...
CM10 is awesome although it is still experimental.

This is inevitable. In a week's time, Google is going to release a new version of Android to compete with iOS 6. The million dollar question is: will the old and already underpowered back when it was launched Nexus S get an OFFICIAL update to Jelly Bean? I seriously doubt it. But there is hope. If it is a speed booster rather than a entirely new design and power hungry features, I think the Nexus S might get lucky. What do you guys think? Fingers crossed.

new os means a new nexus phone, so i doubt a new os is coming .. just a minor update if anything
Performance issues? I doubt it. Features don't necessarily mean slower though, better with ICSs built in data limiter/tracker than a 3rd party app for example. Depends on what they add though, of course.
Small chance we'll get it though. I'm leaning towards a fat no if it's released beyond August or so, before that and we may have a chance. Either way, we'll have rock solid ports within weeks, just like ICS. It amazed me how stable initial ports of ICS were before it was released officially, it was my daily driver (i believe i used eugenes). I have (blind?) faith in the same thing when JB is released.

I am 100% confident that there will be minimum visual changes. The dev team spend so much effort into making a guideline for Android app designs, they are most certainly not gonna ditch that. So that leaves us with one other major change Google can bring to the platform: speed improvements. Both app speeds and overall smoothness. If you check Google io app and the schedules in there, one of them is all about app smoothness and maintaining a constant frame rate. I am hoping that third party apps will be as smooth as the iOS counter parts within a few releases. But back to what this thread is about: I think NS is highly likely to get this update, since it runs ICS okay, but not as fast as some desired, (multi-tasking). So this update should be like froyo, not much visual, lots of under the hood changes, if NS can run ics, it can run jb.

I think it depends on how big the step in version-numbers will be. 4.1 - we'll get it. 5.0 - nope.
Jelly Bean has always been rumored to be 5.0, but latest news have it to be 4.1. (Benchmark logs of an upcoming android tablet)
Remember the nexus one - it started with 2.1 and went all the way to an official 2.3.6.

Think about it: it might be a new interface/design for a tablet, Android really need something solid if they want any chance of fighting iOS and windows RT.

Considering that it seems like RAM usage is going relatively well within ICS, i can't see any worry about that there. 1GB would've helped in any situation, not just moving toward JB which likely wouldn't make a difference. That's the main thing that could have held the NS back. I'm with you unless IO implies anything otherwise. I'm thinking alot more will have to do with dual and quad core setups than our NSs single, particularly with the idea of constant framerates in mind. I see how there isn't that much left to do in the same environment and considering how much effort was put into ICS little will change that's not well below what we see happening, and most of that relates directly to performance and basically making the UI smoother, prettier and maybe a touch more colourful.

I think that if it's more bloated and non-optimized, even less handsets could possibly get it then ICS. So I'm more positive NS will get it
Seeing as ICS was meant to be a unification of tablet/smartphone OS, I don't think they would release another tablet exclusive OS to tear that unity apart again. Also, if we're learning from the past here, the Nexus One got two updates before losing support so Jelly Bean should be the final update for the Nexus S.
Also, since ICS was a major interface revamp, I think Jelly Bean's gonna be focusing on other parts so really, Nexus S does not have any reason not to be able to support it. We'll see though
Have you seen this?
http://phandroid.com/2012/06/20/did-we-just-get-a-sneak-peak-at-jelly-bean-in-google-io-screenshot/#
Seems that the new version will be like froyo / GB transition, more improvement, better visuals. Maybe our devices will get the update.
Yea I'd be happy with a few extra features like magel but the main thing for me is probably just speed and making things look a little nicer ..
I hope they call it 4.1 if it's a smallish update though otherwise will have the same issues iOS six had in that really is like 5.5

"all the way" is stretching it though. We got from 2.3.6 to 4.0.4. Much better than the Nexus One in that respect.
Nothing has been set in stone. We won't know until Google says something. I posted those 2 links to show that JB looks to be a minor upgrade from 4.0.4>4.1. I think if this is the case, there's a chance we'd get it. Remember the N1 went from 2.1>2.2>2.3. 4.0 was a major change, which was the need for the first number in the version to change. Just my .02

Agree with you here. Minor updates are usually pushed, major ones aren't necessarily. I think the only reason the Nexus S got ICS is that there would have been an outcry if we didn't. Seriously, a Google phone with absolutely no upgrade? That would have been ridiculous.

We have 90% ICS. Only Camera video recording is outstanding. Same on many other ROMS for other handsets I presume.
BTW, will ICS ever be 100% on Nexus One? What do you think? ICS camera dev seems to be dead
Perhaps if we get 3 years out of owning the N1 we can hold our heads high and be proud enough to move on!

How do you mean not stable? It's perfectly stable and fast. Only the camcorder does not work very well.

For me it is very stable but CM9 & AOKP ROMs didn't reached stable requirements yet because they have bugs that are important to fix and crucial for the rom's workflow. They are considered experimental for now (CM team released this week CM9 RC1).
Jelly Bean looks bad ass, especially with project butter and the new voice command.
It is also the reason I have finally decided to move on from my N1 after 2 and a half years of loyal service. The failing battery, the half-functioning trackball, and constantly battling internal storage woes have forced me to move on.
The good news is there is a Galaxy Nexus with my name on it, heading my way right now.

Even Google drops the price of galaxy nexus to $300, I will stick with the N1.
I'm really hoping the devs can integrate some of the new things in Jelly Bean to their current ROMs without much extra work. I think it should be possible due to very incremental nature of the update.
That said, I've pretty much accepted that if it is possible, it's highly unlikely they'll be able to integrate the Project Butter stuff from what Google has said about it! Seems it will use massive amounts of system storage and RAM, so that's almost definitely out of our N1's capabilities.
I would be amazed if they managed to get that in there. I still hope they can manage to get Google Now and all the other little tweaks in to a potential JB ROM for the N1.

Nope, sadly. I'd like to keep this tab for awhile longer and it would be nice if Samsung showed up Apple and keeps updating it (and other recent Galaxy devices) for at least one more version. But, nah. Maybe it will be easier for someone to port 4.1 when the 4.0 source eventually gets out?
But if not...**** it, who cares. A few interface tweaks and some nice features, but the 7.7 will still be highly usable with ICS, I would say.
Theoretically the binary blob drivers that come with ICS source should be able to be used in JB builds? I'm guessing
The main obstacle in current ICS dev is lack of ICS drivers esp as they are closed sammy blobs

How do you figure? Android 4.2 doesn't look that different than Android 4.1 except the dual pull down notification menus, updated apps, lock screen widgets and some security features. To be honest, I've seen ICS ports done on Froyo-only devices like the LG Optimus G2x (P999) and they work fine with only a camera bug.
It won't be as clean as AOSP but performance should be pretty good. Hell, there are Nexus One devices running Jelly Bean as we speak. Google said there wasn't enough internal storage to do it but it's being done.

What we have seen so far is that 4.2 is not a major upgrade ... though we may have many changes . when JB can run on nexus one why not on nexus s. Lets hope for best

You have reason, yes for sure, however, Google policy is bad, very bad for not providing AOSP!

If we have NOT a clear ROM(non AOSP) comparing to a clear ROM(AOSP) so the second one will absolutely perform well and better .

If Google officially supported the way the Nexus One runs JB I would go buy a Windows 8 phone tomorrow.. It's great for the adventurous end user but re-partitioning SD cards to cram an OS onto a phone would be insanity for any legitimate company to actually support as a viable means of maintaining a device.
Fact is, JB struggles on the Nexus S. It is NOT `buttery' and never has been. Is it acceptable? In most cases. But you have to look at it from Googles view.. They can't keep supporting a device that is walking the fine line between a usable consumer product or a usable toy for a tech nerd to fiddle with.
I think Google kinda forgot that the Nexus was somehow a developer phone. Who cares about photosphere and facelock consumer crap?

Although JB does run on a nexus one, it's not particularly fast or smooth. It's there mainly to prove it can be done and because people like a challenge, but it's not particularly usable.
We don't actually know what's new in the core of 4.2 and if the NS can actually run it, until someone ports it. We may end up having the same problem as the Galaxy S. Samsung didn't officially update it to ICS because there simply wasn't enough RAM left after installing TouchWiz. I don't like to say it, but the Nexus S is kind of at the end of its life (update-wise).
Some of the features in 4.2 would be nice....the new camera app, quick settings...and we'll probably get them, but through a custom rom.
According to Jean-Baptiste Queru of the AOSP, the xoom and nexus aren't supported.... "There is no support for 4.2 on Nexus S and Xoom. Those devices should
continue using 4.1.2."
later, he says he cannot comment on the future of those devices. What does this mean for us?

unofficialy it will eventually come and it will run as smooth as nexus 10 because xoom has the capacity and hardware for it...it's not a big jump from 4.1.2 to 4.2

Don't kid yourself. The Xoom shows its age on 4.1.2 as it is. Compare the performance to a Nexus 7 or Galaxy Nexus and you can see the difference in speed. Just because the Xoom has the hardware to support the latest version, doesn't mean its going to keep up with devices with fresh hardware. Its coming up on 2 years as it is, which means a lot when there's new, better hardware coming out every ~6 months.
The one feature from 4.2 that I really wanted is multi user support. It was an obvious omission from tablets right from the beginning.
What are the chances of fully activating this feature in 4.1.2, seeing as it already has the underpinnings under the surface?
Yes, it's sad, but those that say it's a "marketing ploy" just need to realize how old the Xoom is and how much work it takes to port these new releases to devices. Money doesn't grow on trees, and neither do man-hours. Once the 4.2 branch started happening and the Nexus 10 hardware was finalized it became Google's standard 10-inch tablet internally. The guys who would have been doing the port internally in Google probably have N10s on their desks and their Xooms are collecting dust in some drawer. That's the way the world works.
That being said, if you look back to ICS, the 4.0.1 code dropped... and no Xoom support. Then the 4.0.2 code dropped... and no Xoom support. It wasn't until 4.0.3 that the Xoom gained AOSP support. I wouldn't be suprised to see the Xoom supported in a 4.2.2 (or later) release. The Nexus 4 isn't even supported in AOSP yet, for goodness' sakes! It will probably be someone's 20% time project and it will happen eventually.
Either way, if it doesn't hit AOSP, I'll either sell it to get some dough for a N10 (my mom has been talking about buying it from me) or lend my support to the porting process during the holiday break. The multi-user mode in 4.2 would be very useful on the Xoom.

Thats a bit of a hostile response, don't you think?
And if by "core," you're referring to the SoC, yeah it kinda does matter. The tegra 2 is a tad outdated, its architecture being a big part of it (A9). The Tegra 3 was a nice upgrade on Nvidia's part, with the Samsung Exynos 5 being even better than that. I'm sure someone with even more technical expertise could explain more in detail on the differences, but the architecture itself is a good indicator.
Now on to personal experience. I've put my Xoom alongside a Nexus 7 and my Galaxy Nexus, all running 4.1.2 and yeah, the Xoom is noticeably slower. I can't wait to see the Nexus 10's performance in person. No one here is saying the Xoom is **** or slow or whatever. But it is, gasp, slower than devices with hardware that is fresh and not 2 years old. Newer technology is better, who knew?
So yeah...no offense but given the delightful way you went about disagreeing with me, I'd say you were projecting just a tad.

The difference with those instances and now is that the Xoom was projected to get all of those, it just took a bit of time for it to hit AOSP. According to the google groups statement, the Xoom is slated to stay on 4.1.2 (I forget the actual quote). Now of course, that could mean, as you say, that it might just be a while for it to hit AOSP, but I think that's being a bit hopeful. Hopefully we'll get an official word on it soon but I think thats about it, at least with regards to AOSP.
And honestly, the Xoom had 18+ months of official support. For those that remember, 18 months was what Google wanted manufacturers under the Android Update Alliance to go by for supporting devices. So they've met their own target and then some with regards to both the Xoom and the Nexus S.
It would be nice for the Xoom to have 4.2 support, but even if it doesn't happen, its been a fabulous 2 years, right? Because I think it has

AOSP not supporting Xoom
No a very smart move by Google, me thinks, in not supporting Xoom after 4.1.2 ( Bless the custom mod gurus!!!). I know in my case I am going Windows Surface. Heres why, I just updated my 6 year old notebook to W8, and it flies.. new lease on life. If Google think I am buying a new tablet every 2 years, Stop the train, we have arrived at looney (google) central!!!!. Long live the custom rom(ers)

The thing is, 2 years is actually...kind of a lot relative to the other first gen 10" tablets. The galaxy tab 10.1 took forever to get ICS and was put at EOL after that (back in June/July I think). Asus has handled the Transformer series pretty well; the OG Transformer received a timely ICS update and I believe was updated to 4.1, not sure if they're going past that. And finally the Acer A500 I think met a similar fate as the Galaxy tab, ending with 4.0.
So that puts the Xoom at one of 2 of the 4 Honeycomb tablets circa 2011 (were there any other notables?) that made it all the way to 4.1. Not too shabby.
Not shabby at all. A shame though that the reason for not supporting is a time limit instead of a hardware thing.
Phones changed a lot since nexus one to ICS
Not much changed hardware wise since Xoom and now IMO

As I type, somebody is building 4.2 for the G1. Look, we can take anything aosp throws at us and make it work on Xoom, to one degree or another. It becomes a matter of performance. At some point, a previous aosp build will just be better for Xoom than the newest build.

So does this meanTeam Eos is finished with rom support for the Xoom?
Just found in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1997434 that the system partition on the Xoom is rather small-could this be the reason that Xoom fell from AOSP support and didn't get all of the JB features?
