Phone still works after sim removed. How/why. - Networking

Yesterday I upgraded to a gs3 which came with a micro sim. I wanted to see if I could keep my old phone as a backup. Would the lte micro sim work in my non-lte full-sized-sim captivate/gs1?
After 3 trys i managed to properly align the micro sim in the full sized sim slot and it worked. But then the weird part. Without powering down the phone I plucked out the sim (possible because the micro sim is so small). To my surprise the phone did not give any error and both data and voice calls continued to work without a sim actually in the phone.
How was that possible? Further, what would have happened if I had booted up my new phone with the sim card that my old phone still thought it was using (I was too afraid to try)? Would both phones continue to work? Would they both ring when someone calls?

any sim should work as long as its activated and its the same size.
and no they both wont work, the phone that has no sim will show "no sim" upon reboot

Perhaps I was not clear. I removed the sim without turning the phone off and it continued to work. I know it should not, but it does. That is what I am asking, how is that possible? Does the phone only check for a sim when it boots, and from then on the sim is not needed?
Then what would happen if I boot up phone #2 while phone #1 still thinks that the sim card is in it.

I'm interested, try it and let us know what happens.

I'm not an expert, but I think all the SIM provides is a string of numbers that identifies the phone with a phone number. This is most likely cached in the device while it is on and it might not need the SIM card after it has already gotten the information. This might not pertain to all phones, maybe the Galaxy S3 was programmed slightly differently.
If you power down the phone and restart without the SIM, the phone will most likely ask you for a SIM.

It is an S1/Captivate that is working without a sim. And yes, when I reboot the phone it stops working. I'm not brave enough to try both phones at the same time. That seems like something that the phone company would notice.

I tried removing the SIM from my captivate while it was running, and for a short time it still showed signal. Soon after I got a message asking to put in a SIM and restart. I don't have an LTE SIM or microSIM to test with, but it doesn't seem likely that the cappy will continue to work without one. Or at least without starting with a regular SIM.

SIM issue ?

Long of it: G1 wouldn't recognize -any- SIM card, tmobile or other. Tonight, popped a tmobile sim in, and it recognized it. Flashed an older JF rom and the phone worked fine on WIFI/Tmo. THis phone was unlocked 2 months or so ago.
Now, it says "Your SIM does not allow blah blah blah" when i try to use my att sim in the phone. I'm very certain about the unlock being proper.
I don't belive the SIM card was ever locked in any way, so the error seems odd, and the SIM card in question (ATT) works fine on my other two g1's.
Any ideas ?

so are u saying that you've inserted a different SIM card and the phone registered fine with a different carrier at that time ?

the sim itself isnt the lock issue - its the phones IMEI thats locked (or not)
try a replacement SIM from ATT???

HTC HD2 as a AT&T GoPhone

I'm trying to find out if anyone has tried doing this. For some reason when I install the sim from my gophone in the HD2 it doesnt say that there is no sim present, but it also wont give me the option to unlock the phone or make a call. If I hit the phone button nothing comes up. Oh yea, Mines the T-Mobile US version >_>
does it work with a regular t-mobile sim card?
Some phones require sim unlock with original SIM carrier in it - once code is typed in then it easily recognizes other SIM cards (AT&T in your case)
I have the unlock code for my phone. I just cant get the panel that asks for it to come up.
Oh and no I cant use it with the regular card because I have to go to the local tmobile shop on monday. I was told by tmobile that some how my sim number must have been a reissued number because it was registered to someone else and now I have to go pick up a new sim card.
My AT&T card was not recognised by my 9193 at first.
I had to put it in and try several times. Pushed it way down in the slot after lightly using a pencil eraser on the contact surfaces and off it went. Hasn't missed a beat in a month.
It's odd, cant seem to get it to work .. It doesnt say there is no sim like it does when I completely take it out, but it still wont let me bring up the phone panel. I've tried wiggling it, Putting it in 50 different ways... nothing seems to work.

[Q] [HD2] Antenna exclamation mark and 'SIM card is missing' issues

Hello all, I bought a used HD2 off CL (USA), hoping to unlock it (if locked) and use it with my ATT prepaid sim.
Outwardly, the phone looks fine and everything about it works quite nicely, EXCEPT that when I insert my SIM card and start the phone, it shows me an exclamation mark on the antenna icon. When I disable all wireless connections and then re-enable it, the icon now changes to the SIM card icon with an 'x' next to it, and I am shown a screen with a keypad and the following message: 'The SIM card is missing. You can still make emergency calls if your service provider supports it.'
Thinking it was a ROM issue, I successfully loaded the latest ROM from [showthread.php?t=789506] but it did not resolve the issue. There is no issue with the SIM because it works nicely with my AT&T Samsung a607. There are no signal strength issues either.
Please help!
Can someone please provide some insight on my situation? I hope I haven't posted in the wrong forum; if so, mods may move it to the appropriate place.
Any advice on diagnosing the issue will be appreciated; I don't even know why the phone is acting the way it is. Many thanks!
Wait a moment, so your device isnt already SIM unlocked? Sounds to me like you need to go ahead and get an unlock code for it, then navigate to the \Windows folder and hit up the program called "simlock.exe" and input your unlock code, then try your ATT SIM again.
Thanks much for the reply. Other phones usually prompt for a SIM unlock code by themselves... why doesn't this one?
Running simlock.exe from Windows does give me the message "Network is locked, please input unlock code". Before I buy the code, I want to make sure that there's nothing physically wrong with the phone. It should give me at least *some* sign that my SIM is being recognized, but rejected due to network-locking, no?
Thanks again!
See thats the thing. With a foreign SIM card in the device, IF LOCKED, simlock.exe should run automatically on startup and ask for the code....so honestly I do not know if your device is messed up somehow, or if its just being wonky for the sake of being wonky. Perhaps you might want to flash a new Radio ROM and see if it then recognizes your SIM. BE SURE to NOT flash one with .51 in its name.
Thanks again. Can you point to a thread with detailed instructions for flashing a new radio ROM for my device? I found many threads while searching and I am confused. I don't want to choose the wrong instructions and brick this device; I haven't done anything of this sort before.
Look at the top of these forums for a stickie by Snarksneeze that will teach you everything you need to know.
Hi again... I don't have a spare 8GB MicroSD card lying around. Is there any way I can do this flashing over USB? I did read that there's a risk associated with flashing over USB (cable yanks, power loss, etc.) but I did flash the newest ROM without any issue, and hopefully I can do the same for the new Radio ROM.
The Radio version shown in the 'About Phone' section is 2.14.50.04, btw.
You can use your 16GB that came with the phone, or any other one for that matter. That requirement is more of a recomendation really. I have flashed with my stock 16GB many times. And yes, you can do it via USB aswell.
OK, so I have more information about the problem. I got the phone unlocked (I heartily recommend 'fastunlocker' on eBay) thinking that it would solve the issue... but it didn't. But, on a lark, I tried my friend's post-paid T-Mobile SIM in the HD2 and it worked! My AT&T pre-paid SIM does not... can this be a problem? The damn thing works nicely in other (unlocked) phones.
Is anyone else successfully using a AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) SIM on a TMOUS HTC HD2?
It may very well be the problem then. I have heard that some phones are incompatible with pre-paid SIMs.
God, that would suck donkeyballs. Can someone confirm that an unlocked TMOUS HD2 does not work with AT&T GoPhone prepaid SIMs?
had this same exact issue and realized that one of the pins in the sim card reader was stuck in the down position. I poked it with a small screwdriver and it popped back into place. works like a charm now.
Thanks for the reply. Are you sure this is the issue? As I mentioned in a previous post in this thread, my friend's T-Mobile SIM works nicely with the phone.
EDIT: Also, are you using it with an AT&T GoPhone SIM?
Bump... anyone?
Final bump: maybe I am SOL. :'(
Is anyone successfully using a TMOUS HD2 with an AT&T Prepaid (GoPhone) SIM?
Give it some time. Sometimes threads at XDA stay dormant for months and then suddenly BAM! a breakthrough happens.
I would say its your sim. How old is it?
I had the exact same problem. I bought a HD2 off cl and put my sim in and got the no sim message and exclamation point. I was using a sim from the voicesteam days but guess what it worked just fine in the Nexus one I had just gotten so I figured it had to be the phone. I finally used a friends sim and it worked fine. So I would turn the phone off in settings then slip his sim out with the battery still in and put my sim in and turn the phone back on. Guess what, it would work for about 10 min then it would suddenly go back to no sim message. So I went and got a new sim from T-Mobile and walla works like a charm. So try what I did and if you end up with the same problem try a new sim from AT&T. I don't know what is different about the HD2 but there something about the older sims that it doesn't like.
Hope that helps!
Hey... thanks for ther reply! My SIM is brand new (about two weeks old). I will however go to the AT&T store and get it replaced to see if it fixes the problem. Thanks again, I appreciate it.
Dear look my problem...

P6800 SIM Card not recognized!!!

Hi,
I just purchased a P6800 to replace my current phone.
Everything is awesome about the device, but everytime I try to insert my SIM from my previous phone, it keeps saying "Please Insert SIM"
After many reboots, same message shows on the unlock screen.
I've tried other SIM cards from my friends' phones (H20, Red Pocket, T-Mobile, Etc.)
The only SIM it seems to detect is my old O2 SIM card from my travel overseas.
Are there different times of Mini SIMs? Perhaps the metal contact sizes are different for data and regular phone SIMs?
I hope someone can help as I would love to utilize the full capabilities of this device.
Thanks.

It uses a regular sized SIM, not a micro-SIM. Are you sure you're inserting the SIM with the contact side down notch end first?

Im having the exact same problem. Bought a Telstra sim for my P6800 and it wont recognise it. The same sim works fine in my Galaxy Nexus, and the sim from my Galaxy Nexus works fine in the Tab. It's just this particular sim/data plan it wont recognise the sim, keeps saying 'insert sim'. I had the sim replaced, same issue. Any ideas?
Did you try to go to Settings -> Wireless and then configure the APN, etc.?

Wont let me into it. When I press Mobile Networks it tells me to insert a sim. The sim works fine in other devices but is not detected by the Tab. A Google search reveals that it is a common problem with certain sims and carriers, I may have to go to a Telstra store and try a few different sims.. Unless there is something else I can try?
I had a problem with my sim card but when I reboot my device It is Ok.
Yes. Try to reboot your device. When I inserted my SIM while the tablet was on, it would give me the same error until I restarted the tablet.
You definitely have to reboot the Tab after inserting the Sim.

With respect, rebooting was the first thing I tried! Makes no difference whether I insert the sim when the Tab is off or not, still not detected
If a different Sim card works in the tablet you can see if your phone provider can give you another Sim. If no Sim works, it's most probably HW related

A sim that worked earlier in the week no longer works, sadly now looks to be a hardware issue..
You can't use the micro sims they mess up the sim reader if you leave it in it will continue to work but once you take it out it breaks the sim slot it happened to me i used a att sim first and it worked fine then a rep at a cell shop put his micro sim with an adapter into to it to see if it worked with t-mobile and when he took it out the sim slot wouldn't work I had to get the device replaced

And that is exactly what has happened to me. I was using a micro sim with adapter and after I removed it, the device no longer recognises sim cards. It will cost me AU$130 to have it repaired.
A big warning to everyone else not to use micro sims with adapters, make sure you use a full old-style sim card! Quite annoying since most carriers these days have the sim card with the micro-sim push out, these will damage the sim slot in the P6800
Same problem here after using a microsim adapter now it doesn't recognize any sim. Do you know how to remove back cover so i try to repair internal sim card reader?

Same problem here, after using a Micro-Sim Adapter, my p6800 stopped recognizing the sim cards. I hope the repair do not cost too much.
Don't know if this might help.
I had the same experience when I insert my Sim card the first time.
Luckily I have about twenty old Sim card to play with.
I tried most of them and found put that some Sim card is thinner.
So, what I did was to paste a layer of clear tape on the back of my Sim card to make it slightly thicker.
It will fell a but tight at first.
But it helps.

I've also tried that, pasted a piece of tap to make the sim a bit thicker but It didn't worked, I think I have to send it for repair.
Thanks for your help.

Last try would be the most ancient method.
Try using a eraser to rub the contacts of the Sim card.

[Q] some sim cards work but others don't

So to make a long story short, an old straight talk sim card works on my phone but some red pocket sim cards do not. I have tried many things to make the sim cards be recognized like turning the phone off and on, taking the sim card out and putting it back in. I'm wondering if anyone knows of some reason for a new sim card to not work. I just got 10 sims from ebay so I'm going through them hoping that one will work.
