An official screenshot in a series of leaked Windows Mobile 7, although nothing official has been announced yet. Word on the street has it that this new operating system will be made available to OEMs before the year is over, and we can see Windows Mobile 7-powered handsets by the time spring 2010 rolls around. What do you think about the screenshot - is it the real deal? And will It be cooked for our lovely ELF/in???
Surely yes.but as of now,all the news is not to be believed.we need to wait.
WM7 uses a different version of WinCE as compared to WM5/6/6.1/6.5/6.5.1/6.5.3 (which all use the same version) so the drivers and the nk.exe files will probably not be compatible. Unfortunately, this means that (more than likely) no one will get this ported unless an official ROM is released. (Not to mention WM7 will probably have higher hardware requirements.)
Here anyone that will get involved in building a custom WP8 ROM for current WP7 devices can post their results.
Many of us know it's possible and that MS is just bullshhh**** us with the "no hw support" thing.
DFT and other teams, hope you will try to give us what MS does not.
Thank you for your other hard work.
Will there really be WP8 for WP7 devices? From what I read it does not seem to be the case.
This will be possible just wait.My sources tell me.
wp8 - from Vickee4u India
i have been using windows phone since 2008 ( O2 phone , Then i have Purchased Samsung i200, now i am using Samsung focus.
now this is my last windows phone not at all satisfied with MS policies, i think because of this policy Nokia is badly affected
they have lunch n900, which has not good response world wide as windows phone 8 is going to be launch next or two month later
Upgrade policy must be 3yrs from date of manufacturing of the product.
i request MS to make wp8 compatible with 1ghz processor phone & 512 ram samsung focus the hot cake phone of windows which made windows most popular in it

You've been using Windows Phone since 7 years before they released their first mobile (Pocket PC)? The Windows-CE kernel wasn't even developed until after the mid 90's

You may want to check your facts on that....... I am no expert but I know Windows CE devices (HPC pre Pocket PC) were tied to Cell Phones.
I know cause I played around with a few back in the Analog days. Before the Ipaq was a hit (PPC2002).
My Audiovox ran Pocket PC 2002SE (edit.....on a fact check it was 2003SE oops sorry)
But heck my Casio BE300 WinCE 3 ( pre WinCE.Net) could be used as a phone back in the day with the use of a CF plug in unit........I miss my little upstart of a Pocket PC ass kicker
IF you see WP8 for WP7 devices, there will be issues. It wont support the fulll feature set. A lot of things wont run at full performance and new WP8 games that are designed for dual core phones will run poorly if at all.
Never mind the fact, after release, unless some betas show up, it will take time to get the drivers right, and dependong on hardware. So, the HD2 might get it first followed by a HD7, etc. At least mine (Verizon HTC Trophy) will be last. So if your counting on a update for your phone right after WP8 is released, I would not get your hopes up to high. It will totaly depend on your model phone too, some phones are still not even cracked for full unlocks yet, never mind an entire OS from the ground up
My contract has been up for a long time now, I even have a credit towards a new phone, I'll just get a new phone in fall time, as the possable feature/performance loss from a POSSABLE upgrade might be too much.
I AM HAVING SAMSUNG OMNIA W OULD LIKE TO HAVE WP8 FOR THIS GREAT PHONE
by SOMKLL
I miss an option in the poll "I'll most likely get free WP8 device as a developer"
I already received two Lumias 800 for free
Don't count on it, guys. Look at WP7, the only phone to unofficially get WP7 was the HD2 and that only happened because the HD7 is basically an HD2 with different buttons.
The source is closed, it can't be recompiled to work on any device. Unless there is a very similar device which runs WP8, it won't happen. And that won't happen because WP8 all have hardware 2 years newer than WP7.

I'm sure where there is a will there is a way as always. API's and PID's can easily be integrated. I have not seen RT yet but I'm sure they will have WHQL enabled so all is needed is a hack to disable this and drivers can be built.
Oh good luck writing those drivers. The best luck be to get hands on WP8 ROMs for current/1st gen devices.
Ms had been testing wp8 on older HTC devices which showed up onlogs leaked on the internet.
And do you have access to that ROM?
I know everybody hurts Microsoft for the decision that WP7 devices cannot upgrade to WP8.
But I trust Microsoft. Everything shows, the company want the best for his new system.
And WP8 have some new functions that really require new hardware. And because there is a lot of function that require new drivers for almost every piece of the existing hardware, I think it's not good business to anyone.
And as a user...Compare to other platforms I can say we are all received the maximum.
And my message to lumia users....Phones lifecycle are very short. It could be happen anytime, a phone's lifecycle reaches it's end as happend now.
+1 gamo!!! As consumers we the people have driven MS to this conclusion. Forcing the hand to say sacrifice the current lineup for stability because people want hardware over usability. My biggest gripe with android is stability and my 'twist the knife' question to all my android friends is, "How many times a week does you phone crash or force close?" and watch them squirm. My Trophy has NEVER (pause) NEVER, EVER, for over 1 year year of heavy use, had a crash or close or reboot. I would rather keep my phone stable and functional than go to crapshoot code--android.

Hey Everyone!
I normally don't really like to do these type of threads but I'm genuinely curious what everyone thinks will happen to the WP hacking scene once Windows 10 hit and Windows Phone and "Big Windows" becomes one. We've had some pretty good success with Windows Phone 8 and 8.1, I'm looking foreword to see what happens post Windows 10.
Happy Hacking!

Well I like my low end lumia 635 and the several hundred app's that I got deployed on it. So I for one will not take the plunge and update until I can do the same thing with win 10. I do however want to update but why if it's going to kill my enjoyment. And Then theres the big question will we be able to hack or mod this new os?.
I am pretty sure that hacking the Windows 10 Core will be way more interesting than hacking Windows Phones. Why? Because there is one unified core for Windows, Windows "Mobile" (RT / Phone), possibly the xbox and the IoT.
In most meaningful ways, that's already the case. There are significant differences between the version of NT on the phone and the one that powers a desktop PC, but most of them come down to making the phone's hardware requirements lower and not having any traditional full-trust user software. For example, it's already theoretically possible to use most Win8 exploits on WP8, but they usually aren't very practical because the exploit expects higher privileges than a WP8 can get, or aren't very effective because the level of privilege you gain is much lower than an equivalent action on a Windows PC would get you.
As for the hacking scene in general, a lot of it is going to come down to how locked down WP10 is. If Microsoft continues its recent trend of being aggressively anti-hacker even when that also means being anti-user (see, for example, the whole Windows RT fiasco) then WP10 could simply fail to garner much interest from the hacker crowd - we love a challenge, but at some point we lose interest in commercially supporting such a platform. On the other hand, if they continue making pro-user changes that also positively benefit hackers, such as allowing apps to be installed to the SD card, then WP10 could end up very interesting indeed! WP8.0 was a less-interesting hacking target than WP7.5, and 7.5 was less interesting than 7.0, but WP8.1 is arguably more interesting than 8.0; what we lost in the ability to do capability unlocks, we probably gained (and more) in the various SD card tricks.
Honestly speaking, I don't see WP becoming anywhere near as interesting as Android unless Microsoft AT LEAST allows sideloading without requiring a dev license.
The status quo means that ALL of the more interesting apps (that is, interesting to a power user) will never run on the platform, because Microsoft would never allow them to exist.
I likewise believe that Windows will continue to be a lackluster mobile platform. The problem is it will never garner decent word of mouth sales. A lot of people these days make their buying choices based on what their geek friend might tell them, and most geeks aren't going to be interested in a platform that is so rigid that you can't do a whole lot with it unless Microsoft had already thought of it and explicitly permitted it.
If they put a fee behind it, any fee at all, then they're permanently going to be relegated to being no more popular than having a BREW license was back in the feature phone days.
Most of us bought Windows 8.1 phone hoping for good hardware, some dedicated apps (Here Maps, Lumia suite) and a promise of a free upgrade to Windows 10.
Microsoft failed to upgrade the devices to W10M, pushes a lot of bloatware, deletes apps of your device without your consent (Lumia Camera), and now it's not updating Skype for Windows Phone 8 users. In the meantime, it's providing constant updates and new apps to iOS and Android.
So why is Microsoft hating us? Should we respond back with a class action suit?
Thread cleaned. If you can't post without being disrespectful then don't post at all.
Lol I'm gonna have to disagree with you. If your phone was released with 8.0, there are exploits available that allow you to make edits to the registry. This means any 8.0 device can get to Windows 10 through the Insider Program, even non-Lumias. They aren't pushing the updates directly to stock Windows 8 devices because doing so would require cooperation from the Mobile Operator (which is no longer necessary in Windows 10). Even though they haven't explicitly stated so, this is one of the main reasons the Insider Program exists; to allow legacy devices to update to Windows 10 for free, without cooperation from the Mobile Operator.
And then, once you're on Windows 10, you're offered more freedom than on any other operating system (without unofficial jailbreaks/roots, that is). Getting a "jailbreak" for sideloading apps is an option built into the settings for every device running Windows 10. Microsoft has jumped through more hoops to support older devices than Google does for Android or Apple does for iOS. Don't be so naive.
Regarding the Skype thing, keep in mind that Microsoft's apps on other platforms (iOS and Android) require a relatively new version of the OS... You can't run Microsoft Word on a 2nd Generation iPhone or on a Android device running Jelly Bean... By terminating support for older software (which they do on ALL platforms), it allows them to focus on better implementation of the features that are available in newer software.
Here is the "new, intelligent camera app" from Microsoft for your iPhone https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id1127910488
and "What’s New in Skype 1.3 for Linux" https://community.skype.com/t5/Linux/What-s-New-in-Skype-1-3-for-Linux-Alpha/td-p/4444623
and for Windows Phone users "You can no longer get Windows 10 Mobile on unsupported devices" (Lumia 520, 525, 620, 630, 635 (512 MB), 720, 820, 920, 925, 1020, 1320, ...) http://forum.xda-developers.com/win...e/warning-dont-wdrt-devices-eligable-t3426830 for no reason, just because Microsoft hates us.
Microsoft to Lay Off 2,850 People
In 2015, Microsoft laid off 7,800 people. This May, Microsoft announced it would lay off another 1,850 employees, mostly people who worked for Nokia, which Microsoft acquired in 2013. In its quarterly 10-K report recently filed to the SEC, Microsoft announced yet another batch layoffs: “In addition to the elimination of 1,850 positions that were announced in May 2016, approximately 2,850 roles globally will be reduced during the year.” This new round of layoffs will be mostly from the phone division as the company restructures.

Has anyone figured out a way to upgrade Windows on a Lumia 950 beyond Fall Creator's Update 1709? It doesn't have to be the 1909 update. It would have to be sideloaded, I know.
As Windows 10 Mobile has been discontinued since December 2019, there is no way to get a new version of the Mobile OS. There is the LumiaWOA project, but since it's fairly slow, buggy and lacks features (cameras, Windows Hello face unlock and more) I don't recommend you use it unless it's for LOLs.
For reference, the latest W10M version is 10.0.15254.603
I've read about installing things like Android on the phone, but as you said, things like the camera will be lost, so what's the point? Rats!
So far, I've managed to come up with workarounds with my "daily driver" 950, but what may eventually get me will be when the web browsers that work on the 950 series get eliminated. I'm going to hold on to the bitter end. They can have my Windows Phone when they "pry it from my cold, dead hand".

Yes, there was an Android FFU for the XL, but that's in very unusable state as basically just the display and touch work (and it was more of an April Fools thing anyways.
Drivers for everything else, from the graphics processor to charging capability need to be made based on Windows drivers and if possible, some can be picked from devices with a similar board.
Not sure if anyone is willing to bother with that though... I think we all would love to see an effort from Microsoft, but it's very unlikely to happen so all we can do is dream and hope it'll remain usable for those who do daily it.
I switched on my 950 XL today just for fun after a year or so, an update was waiting. It does it now (second pack) for 4 hours, almost finish. Have a look at what's happened when finished.
I'd be very interested in what number your update is. Theoretically, the 950 and 950XL are identical from an OS standpoint. Maybe the 950XL is eligible because it's an octa core processor.
I've heard that some guys have managed to install Windows 10 ARM on the 950, and I have a spare 950. But I've heard that there are issues with that route.
