T-Mo Galaxy S3 gimped; using MSM8260?!?!? - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

According to several news sources today, in response to questions regarding LTE compatibility, T-Mobile has stated that their GS3 uses an MSM8260 SOC rather than the MSM8960 everyone else is getting. For all intents and purposes, the MSM8260 is a Snapdragon S3. This is contrary to the A15-derived Snapdragon S4s (MSM8960) in all other US GS3 handsets.
If what I wrote above is true, then the T-Mo version of the GS3 is a gimped device - more like a refreshed and slightly larger GS2 with an HD AMOLED screen.
Since I'm a newb with less than 10 posts, I can't provide external links to my sources. However, Google "tmobile GS3 LTE MSM8260" and you'll see the CNET article I'm referring to.

I did read they decided not to use LTE on the GS3, I haven't heard anything about a diff processor though. This is CNET, not the most reliable source...

It does seem unlikely to use different SoC with the early hackers indicating that AT&T and T-Mobile are ROM-compatible, but I guess somebody will have to step in with some real proof.

I really hope I'm wrong with my previous assumption.
I forgot to ask, but could anyone with a T-MO GS3 post a screen shot of your processor specifications using a diagnostic application? I'm really curious to know whether or not the T-Mo handset is using an S3 or S4 SOC.
If it's an MSM8260 (S3), then I'll stick with the GS2 for now.

on android system info the board is listed as MSM8960. This info is taken directly from the phone itself. Also, Samsung and T-Mobile contradicted themselves in the article. T-Mobile spokesmen have been wrong before.

Thanks for the reply. I'm happy to know that I've been proven wrong in this matter.
It didn't make a whole lot of sense to me when I read that article - afterall, why would T-Mobile insist on using the SGSII SOC instead of the newer Krait SOC again in their flagship phone?
Edit: Just saw your screen shot. Thank you again.

pheewwww, you guys are giving me a heart-attack with all these "bad" news today.

Lol I heard it was a different soc model number vs the lte version but the cpu and gpu are the same. No scorpion core.

Sorry about that. We were discussing the matter of LTE on the T-Mo forums when I noticed that the CNET article stated the SOC in use was an MSM8260. Thanks to this forum, that misinformation was quickly corrected.

It could only be two possible SoCs, MSM8260A (Krait w/ Adreno 225, but no LTE), or MSM8960 (Krait w/ Adreno 225 and LTE).

Or they may alternate kb version to touch version. Either way I hope the next high end slider is due.
I've a feeling that the original "epic ii", which we'd all heard about, was scrapped due to the wimax. Iffin this was the case... with lte around the corner, don't be surprised if they delayed and remade the radio lte. Afterall, it was announced no more wimax phones.
Which leads to my question. Who here would upgrade there phone if its just the camera upgrade, a small processor upgrade(not even dual core), an nfc chip, and now lte capable?
Id honestly consider it.

Needs to be dual core and have some form of 4g, preferably Lte, single core is from a consumer standpoint "out of date" any single core phone is way less likely to get updates as well.

That's not worthy of wasting an upgrade. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one here who's in a wimax blanket. Thered be absolutely no reason to go from an epic to epic 2 if those are the specs. Maybe coming from the evo or evo SHIFT then yeah but in order for something to make this phone feel like a PoS needing an upgrade, the specs would have to be AT THE VERY LEAST different hardware, not the same **** just more polished.

the LTE part is great even though we probably wont have a fully rolled out LTE network till 2014 but the Quad core would definitely help with the over all smoothness of the OS and insure an upgrade to the Jelly Bean or what ever the next OS will be.
I want the note, but if not, Im 50/50 between the E1 and the SG3. Probably will have to see them both in person to make a decision. Baby mama is switching to sprint and wants my ET4G, time for an upgrade for Phatmanxxl!
Doesn't the battery seem a bit too small? I'm sure they have a larger one. Either way, can't wait until we find out all the exact details, exciting lol.

What are you talking about Sprint was the first to come out with a GSII and then T-mobile and AT&T come out with there's a week or 2 later at the time only the International edition was available
All the hyped units like the nexus or the note come later. Sprints cash is going toward network vision first. Phone models second. Verixon & ATT have cash to throw around sprint doesn't.
I'll venture as far to say the new nexus will be announced shortly after we get sgs3.

Yea but Sprint still hasn't rolled out LTE the main reason we don't have the Nexus and the Note was first released internationally then AT&T picked it up from Samsung and were still not sure if Sprint is getting the Note and if so im sure it will get LTE maybe that's why they are taking their time
the nexus devices coincide with the release of a new version of android. we won't see another nexus for at least another 6-12 months. i mean phones are JUST getting ICS.
Still gonna take them 6 months after the gsm version to get this on sprint.
Maybe Christmas 2012?
so leave sprint! i'm considering getting the intl sgs3, hopping on at&t and calling it a day. i'd really like some decent 3G. i don't make many calls so i'm not that worried about calls dropping or worse quality.

Personally, I actually like it a lot. While it's not mind-blowing, the TW UX isn't too bad, and it offers a few really cool gimmicks. I know for a fact it'll have a much bigger development team for rooting and ROMs as well, so I'm most likely going to get this over the Evo 4G LTE.
Hopefully this is the last GS3 thread. I will either lock down or merge new ones.

Hopefully it'll have the Exynos 5 Dual-Core processor (considering there's no chance of us getting the Exynos 4 Quad-Core processor).
If it's Snapdragon S4, then I'll have just have to compare the Evo 4G LTE and the Sprint's variant of the new GS3. Both of them having features I really like. The GS3 has a bunch of interesting gimmicks & accessories, removable battery, expandable storage, and a familiar way to root the device and install awesome ROMS on it. The Evo 4G LTE, on the other hand, has a better display, more Android-like, and overall a better UI (For the most part. I like the new GS3's lockscreen lol), and much cooler hardware design with a kickass kickstand (although, I like how the rounded edges of the GS3 resembles the Galaxy Nexus and even the Epic 4G. Wish the Evo 4G LTE was more like that)
Battery life could be a deal breaker for me too, considering the Evo 4G LTE has a 2000 mAh battery and the GS3 has a 2100 mAh battery. We'll see if there's any real difference.

Galaxy Note 2 for Verizon Will Be SCH-I605

http://briefmobile.com/galaxy-note-2-confirmed-for-verizon-sch-i605
The Galaxy Note will be coming to Verizon as the SCH-I605. Verizon, US Cellular, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint should all be receiving identical versions of the device. We hear that they all have LTE + quad-core processors... perhaps due to a separate modem for the LTE. Not sure about the specific way Samsung was able to get around the Exynos' lack of an integrated LTE modem.
Be on the lookout for SCH-I605 coming to Verizon.

But if they did actually put a shlong on the back, I'd put on a cover..
As long as it comes to Verizon I am happy. I would sell my Galaxy s3 so fast to get the money for this phone. I wouldn't use my upgrade I have because I love my ulimited data!
Hope they keep the international specs like the sprint model (quad core exynos, 2GB RAM). Don't know why manufacturers have been dumbing phones down for America. They claim its LTE compatibility but then they have LTE versions in places like Germany and South Korea with great specs.

It's not that everyone is freaking out, but everyone uses a device differently and thus some features are very useful to them and not to others. Obviously it's unimportant to you.
I have had many Android devices and ios devices. Invariably after beginning to use a new device I find a feature missing that I got used to on the old device. I am very glad to see Verizon getting the Note 2 as the SCH-i605, and since I will be paying full retail, I want to be careful it has all the essential features I want.
Thanks for the picture and clearing up the mystery.
Well TBH I never had a phone with a LED, so maybe it's one of those features that you can't understand it's importance until you try it yourself. The note II will eventually be my first phone with a LED (unless I changed my mind and got myself a Lumia 920).
Which CPU is expected to work with Verizon's LTE more efficiently?

I had the Note 2 exynos version earlier. I had bad battery life on it after installing cm rom. Can the scenario be different on snapdragon viz a viz the battery life. I think the rom can be well customised only if hardware codes are not restricted.

I had the Note 2 exynos version earlier. I had bad battery life on it after installing cm rom. Can the scenario be different on snapdragon viz a viz the battery life. I think the rom can be well customised only if hardware codes are not restricted.

It is possible yes, but @stanley08 has got crazy battery life on his exynos Note and I myself get very good battery on the Snapdragon model, it is mainly user dependant with battery. - a lot of people have issues on both variants.

i would suggest the N9005 as it seems to be the more future proof device since it comes with 4k Video recording & playback capability & i think games like GT Racing 2 runs a little better thanks to the Adreno 330.....compared to a friend who has the Exynos version..felt a little laggy to me...
