[Q] What Phone to get Next - EVO 4G General

I am upgrading phones with sprint. Right now I have a EVO 4G with MIUI on it, LOVE IT. I have had it since it came out. I have had some good times with this phone but through wear and tear I am no longer able to charger the battery through the charger and I must charge the battery it self which sucks. I Would like another phone were I can do some moding on it like MIUI. Any suggest guys. Thanks in advance.

I personally am stuck between the Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy S III. The Galaxy Nexus is always going to be the super easy to root and mod as it is Google's phone (but made by Samsung). Its got good specs but the Galaxy S III blows it out of the water with its quad core processor and 2gb of ram. I like high specs so I'll probably be going with the GS III.

All Samsung devices are easy to root, Samsung is developer friendly and doesn't lock bootloaders like HTC and Motorola. They use a custom binary flash counter in the Odin download mode instead of s-off, it keeps track of how many times you've flashed a non-stock, unsecure kernel basically a custom kernel not modified from stock but built from source. There are ways around the flash counter increasing such as mobile Odin or resetting the flash counter using triangle away for ICS kernels or a USB jig for GB kernels

Should i buy this phone?

hey all, im thinking of getting either a galaxy s3, the htc one x or the galaxy note.
now iv read that the htc one x has serious overheating issues so im not going to bother with that now. so that leaves me with either the galaxy s3 or the galaxy note.
some reports are saying the galaxy s3 has heat issues too but nothing certain.
question is, does the galaxy note have any issues that i should be aware off? if its prone to overheat or failures of other kinds then please let me know and i will not bother to purchase it.
thanks all.

Well there is the emmc issue, which basiccly means if your wipe/factory reset your devices while on a stock ICS rom it can brick your device, other than that no issues really
S3 has the best hardware, fastest CPU and probably the biggest life span since it's newest.
Note has big, amazing screen, great hardware and amazing battery life.
One X has terrible battery life, can't replace battery, no sd card and not that great performance for a quad-core device.
I just got my s3 and have to say speed wise it leaves the note well behind no lag and very smooth overall.
However.
It feels like a toy compared to the note the screen is not all that on the s3 and the note feels a better quality device.
Ive played with the s3 for a bit and now its just sittig there for work duties. the note deffo jas the edge in my books

I'd get the s3. Who knows if Samsung is going to update the note anymore beyond ics... also the s3 has a better processor, it also has a better camera and is certainly more future proof. I'm actually thinking of dumping my own note for the s3, buying two. One for me and one for my partner. I played with it in the store and boy does that device fly. It's just so fast and it seems like it's a lagless device. The note isn't a bad device. But we're talking about a 2011 device vs a 2012 device. Also the new flagship device. I really hope Samsung does keep updating the note because this device is awesome as it has an awesome screen and the pen which originally I found useless but then I started to use it and it's grown on me to the point where I'm not sure I'll be able to survive without it. Haha. How about that? Lol.

really it depends if the s-pen matters to you or not.
if it doesn't, then just go for the latest and greatest device.

Yes I agree about the lag and smoothness; but only if we're talking about stock roms. Flash your note with a custom rom (CM9), and you won't find a difference plus you will have a wonderful big screen:good:
very tempted with the note, the s3 does seem like the logical choice since its newer has faster tech in it but the s3 forums seem to be complaining about overheating issues. im just not sure if i want to risk going with the s3 for those reasons. iv used the s3 in tescos and it is truly a fast device. im also considering getting a google nexus 7 so not sure if the galaxy note is ideal for me. although it does look amazing since the screen is so big.
main thing is that im worried about the reliability of these devices. if there were no reports of overheating of the galaxy s3 then that would have been my first choice.

Not convinced by Note 3 and keeping S4?

Ok I have seen numerous people in my country selling their S4 to get the Note 3.
I have a One and still can't decide between S4 and Note 3,but when I see so much people running away from S4 and going to Note 3 I wonder if XDA real intelligent users will do?

I personally wouldn't choose Note 3 or any Note.
Why?
Because of size. The size of Note 3 is for a limited market.

Really happy with my S4, the screen seemed really big at first (coming from a Sensation with a 4.3" screen), but now I've gotten used to it, I think its the perfect size and wouldn't want to go bigger (already have a Nexus 7, so not much point) or smaller for that matter. Dont really fancy the back on the Note 3 either, although Im sure its probably easily swapped out.
stick with s4,save ur money for future alien invasion

Note series are for a small niche market. You will have less ROM and less developers supporting it. Less user means less developers. I rather upgrade to a Nexus 5.
The Note 3 is too small to be a tablet and too big to be a phone. No regrets about buying the S4 and I will be keeping it, especially given that I only use CWM and never change my ROM via Odin or Kies so still have the non-Knox bootloader, unlike the Note 3.
This will be my last Samsung device however. I'm not being told I can't root my device by anyone.
There should be another option in the poll:-
I am keeping my S4 but this will be the final Samsung phone I will be buying.
S4 for now, until S5/ Note 4
this is EXACTLY what was going through my mind. I live in India and would get the exynos variantof Note3 if I had to get it.
now think it in the terms of the previous iteration by Sammy. The end user experience using a Note 2 was much much much better than the S3, but the gap diminished to a minuscule aperture in the case of S4 / Note 3 combo.
The hand recognition for S4,much manageable size is a good case for me to put any idea to get the Note 3, to rest.
There was a very weak thought through my mind to get the Note 3 cause of the supposedly HMP and core migration, but the Note 3 is in the same boat as the S4. higher clock speed is a "meh" .lol.
cannot say the same thing about the Snapdragon variant market though. for me, Note 3 is a good upgrade for the "Note" users. For those S3 or other flagship users who are wanting to upgrade, I think S4 is a "saner" choice.
Here in India, there is a price difference of around 11,000 INR. I don't think a leather looking plastic back panel is worth the price. :cyclops:

Achyut.
keeping S4 and choose between Nexus 5 or S5
i m definitely keeping my s4 as i have an old bootloader but i was actually considering to purchase a note 3 because i wanted a bigger screen and a better battery. Thankfully Samsung ****ed up the note 3 and this made my decision easier so as the soup nazi from seinfeld would say : no more Samsung for you.
Currently i m waiting for the nexus 5 and i have heard about the htc one max so let s wait and see the users reviews before rushing into another device .

I would suggest not going for note series just coz of its size.after sometime it feels my hands felt uncomfortable holding it while talking.
Sent from my GT-I9500 Crash Rom 8.2
I do own S4 and N3 and I can tell that is a big difference between them. If you get comfortable with the size of note go with him. It's a way better product. By the way...I don't think that the note 3 will be less developed, Samsung will sell milions of them and there is a lot of people who just love the form factor and the abilities of the note series. I will keep anyday Note 3.
Sent from my C6802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
for the average user I'd say the note of any kind is great as where I am many like to watch movies on it etc. but for myself and the many others on XDA, we like customization. I had a note 2 but sold if off for the s4. at first I thought it was a mistake but now i think its for the better. development wasn't that great on the note 2 forums and aosp roms don't really support the device much. the s4 seems to have more variety interms of hybrid tw roms as well as custom aosp roms and kernel support.
I have both and truly the SG Note 3 is simply a bigger screen S4 with a pen.
That said, I really like the bigger screen, and the pen makes life so much easier. But then again, I'm a bloke with big hands and the S4 keyboard is just a little too small for them. Allbmyvtxts lookvlike this.....
Like someone said, you can use the Note 3 for some minutes but holding it in your hand while walking for example is not a good idea because it's not ergonomic,if they had chose rounded borders instead of cubic a la S2 it would have been way better.
I had an S2 and ended swapping it with Sensation just because of that
Try G2
I just had the S4 a month ago and I'm EXTREMELY satisfied. Though I'd certainly would love to have a Note 3. Next year I might switch to the next iteration of the Note. The Galaxy line has vastly improved (also the Android platform and Android OEMs in general) so next year would probably be a great time to upgrade.

I would love to have Note 3 but i think its too big for my hands.
I always wonder if I would find the note 3 too big for everyday use, Im quite tall and can palm a basketball with ease but somehow I feel it would still feel big and I would not get used to as people say they do.

Will the S4 be the last Samsung Smartphone you buy?

Sadly due to all the crap Samsung is doing atm with it's smartphones I've decided to part ways with my S4 while it still worth something, & that will be my last Galaxy S i buy.
As from now on the only Android smartphone i will buy will be the Nexus range, as i want the freedom to do what i want with my Smartphone, without having to worry about warranty problems should something go wrong with the hardware, that is not the fault of a custom rom or kernel.
I'm using my trusty little Nokia 800 as backup now until the Nexus 5 32gb launches which i'll be ordering as soon as it shows up on the Play Store in the UK, I'm just hoping now the camera & video recording quality is at least on par with the Galaxy S3 this time around unlike the Nexus 4 which tbh had a terrible camera.
The S5 can be the best thing since slice bread, but with all the lockdown Samsung is currently doing it might aswell rename itself Apple.
Anybody else also plan on ditching Samsung due to the way they are going?

FOr me Yes and no I love the TW features and pure android is smooth and fast but again its boring as well....When i say TW features I aint talking about the gimmicky ones but the useful ones like the camera, and others I am tempted to buy the nexus 5 but as my s4 is just 2 months old and especially after the brilliant job samsung has done with the 4.3 update am not sure I will stick to the S4 atleast till the S5 arrives
Updating my phone to 4.3. Heard that It is smooth and that's what I want. Sometimes I think to get Nexus 5 but then I realize how useful TW features are to me.
I've used Xperias (for a year or so) and even iPhone (for somedays) but none satisfied me as much as S4.
The most important thing that keeps me on Samsung is the Camera. Features + Quality. Yes, I'm sticking to Samsung
Definitely. I've had the S2 for 1.5 years and then the S4 for six months. I'm thoroughly bored of the Galaxy S range now. Gonna switch to some other OEM for the next phone. Or a nexus maybe if it doesn't compromise on screen, battery life and camera.
100% no samsung for me in the future. With no sources for exynos and all the knox ****, I am fed up. I could live with TW but the fact its laggy even with 2 gb ram and an octa core processor, I think I will look at other options.
Cheers!!

I hate Samsung and their current Knox implementation, turning them into Apple basically. Also I feel their AMOLED technology is nowhere near perfect (low brightness, unreadable under direct sunlight compares to LG screen or Iphones). However, no other phone in this current generation I can switch into. Newest releases contains so many flaws that are such a deal breaker for me: LG G2 without micro sd; Iphone 5s with terrible iOs 7; Xperia Z1, well, let's just say that it doesn't even ring any bells around. All and all, as much as I loathe my s4, I still have to stick with it because there is no other viable alternative that suit my needs currently. Probably won't be using s5 and try to avoid samsung like a plague next generation.
I went with the S4 GPe, and didn't look back. I looked at the Nexus 4, and it lacked features that I needed; no LTE, no 1080p screen, not enough storage or MicroSD to make up for the lack of storage, and no removable battery. Even the Nexus 5 won't have a removable battery, and while 32GB is an improvement, i need at least 48GB for my usage (I have 80GB on mine).
count me in.... i'm fedup with all samsung crapness... next will be a sony or a nexus for me
I'm done with Samsung definitely my next is gonna be something else, not because I think they suck or I'm against their practices but cause I've been using Samsung exclusively since the Galaxy S up till my current S4 and I think I need a break from Sammy!

iOS 7 isn't all that bad tbh from what I've seen of it, my sister just got herself an iPhone 5s, so like anything i had to have a good look at it & at one point i was actually tempted to get myself a 32Gb iPhone 5S, but the screen abit on the small side for my liking.
The camera on the otherhand is brilliant, really have to give Apple credit for this, the camera functions itself is very basic not many options to mess with, but soon as you take a picture 99% of the time the images are spot on & even stay looking decent in low light aswell, something i found impossible to do on the S4 was to get a decent image in low light as most of the time it came out as a blurry mess due to the camera lag, which the 5s doesn't have a problem with.
If the iPhone 6 has a bigger screen & iOS 8 allows widgets then i might be slightly tempted to switch next year & just have a Nexus 2014 tablet for my Android fix.
I'm new to Samsung. Can somebody tell me what the knox implementation is?

As long as they keep releasing phones with Google Edition roms available, I'll stay with Samsung. 1080p amoled + sdcard + switchable battery + decent camera + stock android = almost the perfect device for me (performance could still be better, but that is mostly an android problem (and don't give me **** about how your phone isn't lagging because it is, you just might not perceive it)).
Yup Sony for me next time. I've had every Galaxy S since the S1 but Samsung have really put me off.

I'll definitely stick to samsung, take note that this is just my personal opinion.
I like touchwiz, for me it's very simple, i've had the xperia z for a couple of months, s4 camera i would say is far better, and i don't like the way the sony launcher is. And definitely the screen on the sony ones has not impressed me at all, i even owned an xperia tx but on all sony is prone to quick scratches even the sony z1 has the same screen compared to samsung's screen, which are much better.
The only drawbacks i have against samsung is about the plastic body, and chinese manufacturers can easily make a copy of the phone!
well despite the fact that for the i9500 in terms of rom development is slow, i prefer stock rom! it's very stable!
so i will definitely stick to samsung unless s5 mess things up
i would then move to an htc phone maybe! :3

People on about knox bootloader etc being implemented and that samsung have locked there bootloaders, yeah its a blow but then again we have to remember that Sony,Lg and HTC also lock there bootloaders so its nothing new, yeah Sony screens arnt that great anymore, they look a bit washed out now,T was nice device,I loved my T before it got beer damage,in my opinion the Hardware of the s4 isnt to bad, yeah it is plastic which is a let down but the software is the issue, its heavy due to all the bloatware, slim roms work really well but is it my last Samsung phone,we shall see,at the moment i think HTC one is best alternative, the only thing that gets my back up with Samsung isnt with the s4,thats surprising but with the Galaxy Camera, lovely device but its like theyve forgoten it already ,no updates for past 6 months

Same here. Removable battery is priority #1 for me. SD card slot is a very close second. I also like the shape/profile of the GS4 over Nexus devices, but that is a minor concern compared to the previous points. LTE is also very nice, but not a necessity for me. If a Nexus device had removable battery and SD card, I'd probably choose it.
If there is another high end phone with removable battery, sd card slot, ir blaster and a Qualcomm SOC I will buy non Samsung.
But those things are more important than anything else.

Galaxy Grand 2 Revealed

Samsung has announced the device and it is none other than the Galaxy Grand successor. Samsung rightly calls it the Galaxy Grand 2 and brings in better hardware and new design. Galaxy Note 3′s stitched faux leather back has also been adopted in this device as well and comes with a 5.25-inch 1280×720 HD TFT display.
The processor and RAM has also got an upgrade, which now comes with a 1.2GHz quad-core processor and 1.5GB RAM. Additionally, you’d find an 8 megapixel camera at the back, 1.9 megapixel HD camera on the front, 8GB of internal memory which is complemented with an external microSD card slot supporting up to 64GB. Other hardware features include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, dual-SIM support and 2600mAh battery that promises up to 10 hours of playback and 17 hours of calls.
The phone runs Android 4.3 with Samsung UI overlay and other features like Samsung Hub, Story Album, Group Play, S Translator, S Travel, Sound & Shot, Best Shot and more.
There’s no info on the price but the phone will be available in black, white and pink.

Yupzz & it comes with android 4.3 which is somehow latest version of android around samsung devices for now.
But if we take a look then m not sure Grand will get further official 4.3/4.4 update in future ahead.
Andro 4.2 is the final update for our Grand.

Good to know,SAMSUNG has announced another Amazing device. Finally this grand will be having 720p display rather than previous 480p,faster processor and more RAM. According to my perception this device is one of the best affordable devices out yet.
I think the time has eventually come to upgrade our GRAND TO GRAND 2
May be This should be called Mega 5.2 as this is little brother of Mega 5.8 :good:
Anything larger than 5" is impossible to use without 2 hands... unless you have a really big hand.. definitely not upgrading. Samsung has a tendency to make their phones larger and larger... ditching rational ergonomic size...
Maybe it's just me. I don't like their phone-tablet hybrid phones (Note lines and similar sized devices) too big to use as a phone, too small to satisfy entertainment and web browsing use from a tablet...
Not enough spec changes to warrant an upgrade. The Moto G dual SIM will get Kitkat, has the pretty much the same spec. It looks to be a better option.

I wish samsung has given Grand 2 with 16 internal memory ... snapdragon chipset ( The one we get in Nexus 4) or same chipset as s3 ... Super amoled panel and 3000 mah battery ...
I think Grand should be updated to 4.4....... its the best selling mid range in India.......... and its not 18 months old....

My intention is to keep my Grand til it's unusable. Maybe 1,5 years or so from now. And by then I won't buy another Samsung device. It has to be a Nexus. I've tasted how awful it is (especially regarding updates) to own a mid range device from several companies.
Samsung releases phones too fast... They might lose their market with this...

For me : I wont' upgrade to Grand 2. Grand is rather dissapointing for me (FYI, I've been using grand for 4 months). I'm not dissapointed for its software update, but its performance especially for daily usage especially after updating to 4.2. 4.1 is not that fast, and 4.2 is worse.
In here, Grand is priced 3.200.000 IDR (approx. $290) unlocked. For a $290 devices, surely I expect something more than this. Grand is very slow for a device using a dual core CPU especially when opening Gallery with more than a hundred photos. :crying:

The biggest problem with these custom ROMs is none of them support dual SIM, which is main reason some of us bought the Grand. If dual SIM is not required, then there plenty of better phones out there. And if you want pure Android, why not get the real thing and go with Nexus 4 or Nexus 5?

[Q] Help me decide my next phone!

Hello guys,
I've been searching recently to decide which phone will be my next phone in 2 months. The parameters for me to decide are, I keep the phone at least few years like my current SGS2 phone and I need it to stay above average. I know I may see better for next 6 months or so but I want to decide in this period. Money is not a factor.
I've been reading about new Knox for SGS5 and every poll in other websites I've read was saying they are not going to buy or they are not interested and disappointed!
I also read about another Galaxy S 5 named F series or Galaxy Prime! It's the same as Galaxy S 5 but with better specs and metal unibody!
I stuck to choose between these:
Google Nexus 5 (32gb, LTE)
Samsung Galaxy S5 (prefer 32gb but if it's available till then, LTE)
Samsung Galaxy S4 (I9505 LTE)
I also created a poll for the ones who are lazy to answer.
Any response, opinions are welcomed.:good:
Thank you.
EDIT:
I prefer removable battery because in my country any official repair center has no meaning and they are all in one that asks money for their services. So in few years period I need atleast one new battery as my previous experiences. And having removable battery is a factor. And having an SD card is but with 32gb version that would not be a huge problem but I prefer having removable battery and SD card slot.
I heard about nexus 5 battery life that as its best it would be average. Having a good battery life could be a factor too.
I have similar problem and I have narrowed it down to 2 options:
- Samsung Galaxy S5
- Sony Z2
but still can't decide

Oh my god. That's exactly what I did in past hour! I'm watching some YouTube reviews right now.
Really hard choice tbh. Release date for z2 is April 1st? I hope we don't get April's fool
I want to get them with LTE cause I won't upgrade my phone in next years. Any idea about release date for LTE on the same day?

Been there, done that... Watched/read all reviews and still in between
Not sure what you mean by LTE version on Z2:
The latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 2.3 GHz quad-core Krait CPUs and 4G LTE for fast performance, 3GB RAM and high capacity 3200 mAh battery in an 8.2mm slim smartphone
Will there be a version without LTE???

Exactly. I thought Z2 is the same with galaxy s series for having LTE versions (4G) that it's market dependent and different in any country/operator so that's a positive thing for Z2.
They are exactly the same except the ram and cpu, samsung clocked it at 2.5GHz. But that ultra power saving mode on S5 is an awesome thing! I'm more into S5 now because of that auto-focus, ultra power saving mode and removable battery. But getting an S5 LTE version is on whole another subject!!

If I wanted monochrome black and white screen with long battery life I would stick with my Nokia 6310i
But I agree, that removable battery is important thing... unless you change your phones often

lol yeah.
That's the main reason for me cause I won't change my phone even in two years period. I still have my beloved SGS2 almost four years now and changed the battery once! That's why I'm worried about these.
But I hear others say go for Nexus 5! Because of development and open source! I think I'm going to change my mind to wait for S5 release date to see actual reviews then decide! I think in that mean time I would buy Nexus 5 then if S5 had positive feedback from actual consumers I would change my phone! But doing this would waste my money!
But till then who knows? :fingers-crossed:
Nexus 5 pros:
- development and open source
- faster Android updates
Nexus 5 cons:
- no Micro SD
- non-removable battery (same as Z2)
Two above in the same device disqualifies Nexus 5 for me...

You are right but I can't live without a custom rom! I know in first few months of S5 release there wouldn't be any custom roms specially if they want to include all those new features.
And I know nothing about Z2 or Sony devices in this matter, cause I never had one!
I'm slowly taking decision to buy N5 now and then see the situation after release of Z2 and S5 then change my phone after that if I still wanted to leave N5!
Did you make your decision yet?

I will wait for both to be released, take both in my hand and decide
Although Sony is winning currently:
- active noise-cancellation - although don't know if Sony will include headphones that use it in the box
- I like SmartBand better than Samsung Gear stuff
- hate Samsung for Knox
but... honestly not 100% sure... 11th April is coming fast!
Hi All
After long search and comparing many flagships I finally decided to get the best smartphone
I was thinking about Galaxy S4 - Galaxy S5 - Nexus 5
then I decided to get Galaxy S4 for the following:-
1- Replaceable battery.
2- SD card support.
3- Easy to fix and replace parts if I need to.
4- No fingerprint scanner (this is really stupid option).
5- Perfect size easy to put in your pocket.
6- come with Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 and 4.3 No KItKat 4.4.2 SD card Limited use (I don't update).
7- Good performance & battery life.
8- So many people used this phone for good time without issues or problems.
9- Close aspects & hardware for this year Flagships.
10- Good price $ (after one year in market the price got good drop down).
I have used so many smartphones from Samsung, Nokia Lumias, htc & Sony................ frankly speaking Galaxy S4 is something really special.

The only pros of getting S4 are,
You already have custom roms!
Price got dropped.
But the difference is not that much. In my opinion and after reading so many opinion and reviews. I would say with choosing S4 in my mind I would go for S5! Cause the same will happen to S5 after few months except the price drop. Everything is better on S5 than S4 including so many new features! (I'm not talking about heart rate or finger scanner) Specially for the people who use Stock rom, including me in first few months!
If I have the money in few months after release of S5/Z2 for spending money. I would go with N5 now then decide for Z2/S5 and that mean time after reading actual consumer review's! I stuck with this situation now. I don't know if I'm able to save money till that time to change my phone! And only thing worries me is this, If I'm going to stuck with my next phone then I'm going to decide between S5/Z2 but I don't know if that will happen.
Someone told me an awesome thing about this:

I'd say:
"Safe-ish" choice, from the clear Android leader, but with another "me too" phone is the GS5.
Z2 seems to be the "Exciting" choice, that a LOT of Android enthusiasts claim they'd prefer instead of the boring GS5.
So, Safe or Exciting...
