Touchscreen dead - 1 week old - Nook Touch General

Hi all,
I got the nook last week and loving it. last night i was reading and everything was fine. This morning when i checked, I couldn't unlock it (the 'n' button works but i can't slide to unlock)
I thought the device had frozen and since i couldn't shut it down, i did the hard reset (pressing the 2 side buttons).
When the nook booted up, I couldn't press the setup buttons. that's when i realized that the touch screen is dead.
The nook has never been dropped or banged, and i've pampered it.
I'm just hoping its some sort of firmware issue cause sending it back from Pakistan isn't that convenient and also i'm not sure if they'll replace it without an issue.

The NST uses IR sensors in the gap between the frame and screen. If you get lint or dust in there, it can cause the same symptom. I was dubious that this could be much of a problem until it happened to me. Try blowing out where the frame meets the screen and trying again. Hopefully, it's just some crud in the gaps.

HELP...Digitizer buggered

help needed
my digitizer appears to be on the way out, the touch screen alignment keeps shifting for no good reason, it used to do it only when i rotated the screen but now it even happens when i keep it in portrait only.
Also, right after i turn the uni on the touch screen won`t work for atleast a couple the seconds, no clicking noise and no indication i am touching it all.
The problem is getting worse with time.
Any thoughts/advice will be much appreciated.
same for me.
doesnt happen when i switch from portrait to landscape, but the alignment keeps getting messed up.
i'm thinking of opening the screen part, maybe i'll tighten the lcd and screws inside or something...

i did it just now. tightend screws, made the connectors sit properly, cleaned the edges of the screen a bit...
lets hope it will make a difference.
Bump. Any joy?
i gave in and ordered a new touch screen from ebay, £11 inc p&p, can`t argue with that.....
screen not arrived yet..... but the problems i was having seem to have gone away ?.
i`ve just flashed a different ROM, (although it was one i`d flashed before), and the problems i was having are gone, very weird.
this wasn`t the first time i`d re-flashed since the problem came up, and i`ve re-loaded all the same software i had when i was getting digitizer drift.
i will probably re-place the screen (when it comes ) anyway, but.....lets hear it for faults that fix them-selves.

"Half-bricked" trinity after lcd broke - bootloader still working

Hello,
I'm facing the following situation:
I droped my Trinity and the LCD broke on the left side pretty bad. It booted fine after that (the LCD was still visible on the right side) but after 10-15 seconds it just froze. The hardware buttons were not working, nor the touch commands. I could only rest the phone with the stylus.
I successfully replaced the LCD by myself and now I'm stuck with the freeze. I was hoping the freeze will disappear but I have the same symptoms as before.
I tried a hard-reset but after that the phone froze during the booting process with the logo on the screen.
I entered the bootloader and connected the phone to the PC. It worked just fine and the freeze didn't occur anymore. I uploaded a new ROM but again, during the booting process I got the goddamn freeze.
I was hoping that everything beside the LCD survived the crash but I'm starting to have second thoughts.
I would appreciate any advice or hints on how to find what could cause my problem.
Thanks
If its freezing up on you then I would imagine you've caused some hardware damage.
Like you, I would have hoped that replacing the broken LCD woudl fix it, but there's nothing to say you havent partially damaged or dislodged something else, especially if it was a high-impact drop...
PS
I wouldnt try doing any more uploads to it either if I were you. If it freezes up during one of those then you could end up trashing the program area of your device too!...
Hi guys,
I had quite the same problem, without braking the lcd but anyway it fellt from a airplane onboarding bridge :-( and then it has started to randomly freeze.
I think I may have found something. I've noticed that when I press strongly the battery it's not freezing anymore!
I've opened the phone and saw that under the little metalic protection's plate there were a contact plate between a little black component and this metallic protection'splate. I've cleaned it, apply some thermal past (like cooling artic) and the I've put a little sheet of paper between the plastic frame and the metallic protection's plate. I've all remounted.. And surprise!!! not one freeze since two day!!
I hope it will last.. but if yes this s F### great
ähm.. I release any kind of responsabilities concerning this action. I'm not a professional but as soon as it has work for me I wanted to share it ;-)
Seeeervus!!
Dodjob.

Has anyone dismantled an X1?

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has fully dismantled an X1 - and if so, do you know if there are water indicator stickers on the inside of the phone?
So far, I can see two on the outside (one on the battery itself and the other where the battery contacts are on the phone itself)
Thanks in advance!
some where on youtube there is a vid on dismanteling an Xperia

It doesn't appear to have any on the inside.. however I'm not sure if the 3 rectangular white things on http://www.phonewreck.com/wiki/images/thumb/a/a8/Xperia_x1_pcb_2.jpg/800px-Xperia_x1_pcb_2.jpg are teh same as the water indicators on the outside.
Yes Dismantled it.
Mine fell down. Touch stopped working and so did the finger scroll sensor. The touch worked in landscape but in portrait it wont work.
Opened it and found the connector slide cable (similar to ones in samsung slide phones) unplugged. Guess the shock of the fall made it stick out.
Anyways plugged it back in and whoa....Phone was as good as new.
For thoe whose touchscreen stop working, I suggest please first try the "BOAN" method. (Battery off all night). Insert the battery in the morning and the screen works miraculously.

Or make a hard reset may i add...
Or full flash instead thats worked for me...
Hard Reset did not solve my probem though. I tried flashing to Generic R2a0010 as well. Did not work.
One more thing before i tried the BOAN methodm was inserting a visiting card between the screen and the casing especially the four corners to wipe out the dirt. beleive me, its the small particles that pile up and sometimes pressurize a particular point disrupting the touch mechanism. I got my X1i only 20 days back, and i stay home or office and believe me there was enough dirt residing in the corners. I was actually surprised why they had such a big gap between the screen and the casing.
Anyways, since i did the flash, I flashed mine with the latest R3A0010. All's well in my x1 except that custom ringtones are not loud enough.

Screen sticking

Anyone else having a weird, intermittent issue with the touch screen seemingly not working right
IE: I try to scroll and instead it makes a tap where my finger lands. Unlocking the screen doesn't work 50% of the time because the lockscreen will just lag out and I have to sleep/re-wake the device
This happens on stock and after i rooted to tiamats rom

I haven't experienced or heard of this before, at least as you're explaining it.
Is this accompanied by screen dimming? Did this start after the update to HC3.2?

Your device may not be grounded. It's a common problem with touch screen devices. Does this happen when you're holding the device in your hands?

I really don't know, let me do some testing and see what circumstances it is replicated under.
How would grounding be determined? Its not charging...
I do have it in a silicon/rubber case. Would that be a problem?
Just for the sake of satisfying my curiosity - if you are experiencing this issue while your Xoom is docked - try placing your fingers on the back of your Xoom and typing with your thumbs.
I am trying to resolve a similar issue that I only encounter while my Xoom is docked at one place in the world - my work. Nowhere else does it do this.
I have installed a power conditioner, with no effect. It happens whenever the power is plugged into the dock. If I use an external power supply it goes away (batteries). I did switch off the florescent lighting and it is better, so it may be EM related. especially since it is a *capacitive* screen.
I have also read of people with other capacitive touch screen devices have the same issue when it is not held in their hands.
Let me know either way.
Thanks,
Frans

I have seen issue on gtab where some roms/kernel where having issue with screen calibration, there was a calibration files that could be created in the root with the name calibration.ini and upon reboot it was fixed, I do not know if this is valid for a xoom tho...
with a few rom I had NO issue whatsoever and never reused the calibration...

Well you bring an interesting point. The device was in my hands but I was not actually touching it... It had a rubber sleeve on it.
I since got the Motorola hard case which has some areas exposed and I also disabled the lock screen, and I have not been able to replicate the problem at all.
The device was docked at one point, charging, and the problem showed up aagin (recalling from memory). The fix was to power off the screen and re-wake the device. This did involve touching it, so...maybe its an electrical thing?

I had this problem with the stock 3.2 ROM. I haven't done any calibration, and don't think I need to: it works perfectly majority of the time.
I'll reenable the lockscreen and try to replicate it again.
Okay I think I'm onto the problem
I opened the case just now, still lock screen disabled, pressed just the power button and the touchscreen was acting up again.. couldn't slide to scroll, but could tap/point only
I then put my thumb on the side, as if naturally holding it without a case, and it started working normally again without any kind of power cycle.
Thoughts?
Have you dropped or jarred your Xoom a lot? Look for threads I started in this forum, I have one that explains this issue and includes a fix. My Xoom is still working flawlessly. I'd link it but pre-calculus is about to start.

I bought the XOOM second hand from someone who claimed they hardly used it. Right now sitting infront of me, the bottom right, on the back edge, there is a small pressured crease as if it was dropped (looks like the corner of my phone when i dropped it on tile).
I personally have not dropepd it, but I throw this thing onto my bed all the time, it fell out of the dock onto my hard desk once, so yeah its been knocked around.
Will doing that mod void the warranty?
I found no warranty stickers or screws when I disassembled it. The back cover is made to slide down so that Moto can do the 4G upgrade, so I doubt they want to be fooling with that type of thing anyways. I can't say for certain that sticking a piece of foam in the back of your Xoom won't void the warranty, but I can say that it fixes the issue(which also could be covered by warranty if you can get someone to believe you've got the issue, I however could not, so I had to take it upon myself).
Alright
I just ran into the problem again playing a game.. seemed like the right half of my screen just stopped working intermittently. Kept playing and it returned to normal.
I may pop it open and try the foam thing. I'm pretty good with disassembling laptops.. I can't see this being much harder.

[Q] Nook touch screen not responding

Hi,
On my rooted nook touch, sometimes the touch screen stop working.
It appends whatever software i'm using and randomly. Buttons works, page refresh works too and the nook doesn't lag, it's just a touch screen crash...
I tryed to unregister the nook and to update it from 1.0.0 to 1.0.1 then root it again but the problem still here.
Do you know a solution for this problem ? each time it's append I must hard reset the device (power + right bottom buttons)... is there a service to restart to enable touch screen again ?
Thanks
Hi, I'm new here ^^.
I bought the nook touch 2 months ago, and it worked perfectly until yesterday. I installed MSN Mercury from the market, I logged on my account, but when I clicked the menu button, the touch screen stopped working and I used adb reboot from my pc to restart it (I didn't know how to hard reset).
It scared me a lot, and I uninstalled that msn when I restarted the nook.
I request a solution for this too, and, do you know a simple MSN that works perfectly on our e-Ink nook?.
PD: Sorry for my bad english ^^u
Same as you.
Just screen is out of response.
Happened both 1.0.0 1.0.1.

Long thread about the subject.
From the thread and running into the issues myself, it seemed to be a sensor/dust issue as the only solution I found working is wiping the screen with a cloth or so. This is kind of sad since I already has a screen protector on it but I guess any bit of dust on the screen could cause the touch function to fail.

I do not have much faith in the dust theory, you'd need some serious dust, like sand, on your screen for the sensor array to even notice it
Remember, it's not a touch sensitive screen like those on phones and pads, but a rather coarse infrared grid "above" your screen.
I've experienced this once myself, and then I simply put the NST away for the night and when I woke up in the morning it was working again which makes me suspect a lockup in the driver,
Had this happen to me. Here is the timeline
1. Girlfriend bought nook for birthday
2. Dropped said nook after 2 months or so
3. Bought refurb off ebay from B&N's ebay account
4. Screen would stop working randomly
5. Contacted support
6. They shipped me a refurb replacement
My second nook wasn't under the extended warranty or even a 30 day warranty. Its a manufacturing issue so they should replace it for free.
Ok, so I had this same problem, and took it to B&N, they said that they hadn't seen that before a gladly replaced it for me. To this day I'm still not sure what caused it, but I know it happened after leaving it in a pretty how car, but not sure if that's linked or not. My current one which I've had for about 5 months hasn't had any problems.
Old thread is Old but I'd gotten mine knocked out of my hands. Screen looks undamaged but the hardware buttons don't appear to do nything other than holding down the n switch to make the glowlight come up. Tried putting it to sleep, plugging it into a computer. Only thing that seems to indicate it isn't a total brick is the glow will come up. Other than that screen has a static of the last book I was reading in coolreader.
Bought the thing for an easter preasent to myself from walmart. Still have the box but it's rooted and til the drop had no problems whatsoever (well problems that weren't due to user error.) Saw a 'leave it overnight' suggestion and am going to ttry that.
Is there anything I can try or is this going to be one of those 'the outside looks fine but the slight bump wiggled something loose that you're going to need to tear the whole thing apart to fix.' things?
Edit: failing that could someone walk me through the button presses/times to press each button to un-root/restore backup using NookManager? I'd be doing that blind as the screen only shows an image from coolreader but I figure better to try taking it back to stock before returning even if nobody looks it over.
Hi All,
Solution for screen as simple as... get tissue, dump it with a bit of water (tap water will do) and clean your screen carefully. Solved Make sure that water gets into corners of screen. There is some kind of filter. It must have connection with top of the screen... some how water do the trick. I was designing custom cover/case for my nook when I discovered it. BTW your finger shod be a bit wet when you use your nook.
Hope it helps!
Thanks

The Nook doesn't have a capacitative or resistive touch screen, so having a wet finger is irrelevant. Instead, it uses an infra-red touch screen. Between the screen and the grey plastic bezel, you'll see a transparent lens protecting the IR emitters and receivers used to determine finger position. Reportedly, if that gets dirty, it fails to register finger positions.
