Tablet with Pen: Thinkpad Tablet vs HTC Jetstream vs HTC Flyer - Thinkpad Tablet General

I absolutely need a tablet with pen functionality, and I'm stuck between the 3 choices above. Appreciate any advice from the community:
HTC Flyer Pros:
Very good aftermarket "hacking" support in term of custom ROM, upgrading OS, etc... I've seen what good this can do, my 2 year old Sprint Epic 4G (running ICS) absolutely defeats all the current generation phones with A9 dual core (but running Gingerbread) in benchmarks
HTC Flyer Cons:
Hardware is two generations out of date (CPU is from the A8 Cortex era)
Thinkpad Tablet Pros:
A9 Cortex era hardware... so only one generation out of date, but the Nvidia Tegra 2 was the worst of the A9 SoC.
Thinkpad Tablet Cons:
Not as vibrant an aftermarket support as the HTC Flyer. I've seen many frustrated posts here on this forum.
HTC Jetstream Pros:
A9 Cortex era hardware... so only one generation out of date, and specs wise better than Nvidia Tegra 2. Best hardware out of the 3
HTC Jetstream Cons:
I think the aftermarket support is dead. No ICS. Only one custom ROM exist.
I can't wait for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 to launch and it's too pricey for me too. Which tablet would you choose if you were in my shoes?

The lenovo of course. The other two aren't as good imho. And the support for think pads is very strong. I've had mine in the repair shop two times and it has been hassle free and quick. With ics the tablet is pretty great and the pen only mode really makes it awesome for notes and the like.

Is the performance much better in ICS than in Honeycomb?

Overall the system feels much more snappy and responsive. I've had two tablets with Honeycomb and found them both to be very unstable and filled with bugs (Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet).
And if your serious about using the pen, you'll want the pen only mode the Lenovo has with ICS.
That said, I would strongly consider waiting for the new Samsung Note 10.1. While I am happy with my Lenovo tablet, it is just not a triple A product, that you usually expect from Lenovo.

[news] SAMSUNG Nabs Tegra 2 - Galaxy Tab 2!

http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/19/samsung-nabs-tegra-2-for-galaxy-tab-2-google-makes-tegra-the-ho/
"It sounds like all of NVIDIA's wrangling and cajoling finally paid off, if a couple of analysts are to be believed -- both say the company's dual-core Tegra 2 chipset is racking up wins in the tablet space. We've seen it seemingly raise the bar for smartphone silicon in the LG Star and tease us in slate after slate, but Citigroup's Glen Yeung says that Samsung has "placed a sizeable order with Nvidia for Tegra 2 chips in the first half of 2011, geared for both tablets and smartphones," and BMO Capital Markets analyst Ambrish Srivastava anticipates the next Galaxy Tab will be one of the devices that use it. If that sounds obvious, remember that Samsung was supposed to be producing a dual-core chip of its own. What could cause companies to embrace Tegra 2, if that's indeed what's happening? Any number of reasons, to be sure, but Glen Yeung also says that Google has made Tegra the reference design for Honeycomb, aka Android 3.0, and so Tegra 2 may sound like a fast track to victory in the budding tablet space. Here's hoping it's a good choice for consumers, too."
I guess i'll be selling my Galaxy Tab soon enough. Ive seen the Tegra 2 at work, its REMARKABLE! The low power consumption and amazing power, makes flash videos play SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH!!
as long as it still have phone capabilities, i might upgrade
but i'm not sure its gonna be launched soon enough
as for having gadget these days, it wont last for long, so jumping from gadget to gadget is our destiny
LOL analysts.
Somehow I dont see Samsung dropping use of their internally developed mobile chipsets and using Tegra 2. Unless you want Tab 2 to be such piece of crap as Viewsonic G-tablet.
My bet is they are hyping nVidia stock because they need to unload it.

Except that the Hummingbird wasn't internally developed.
It was designed by Intrinsity on behalf of Samsung, who also manufacture it. The same Intrinsity who Apple purchased and subsequently released their A4 chip which is exceeding similar to the Hummingbird.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if Intrinsity is a closed Apple-only shop now.

I don't think so, dual core Samsung Orion Cortex A9 with Mali GPU is quite alive and kicking http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-orion-tablet-gets-previewed-ahead-of-presumed-2011-debut-19115073/
Both Apple A4 and Samsung Hummingbird are based on the same ARM and Imagination Technologies IP and they share the same layout but. Intrinsity did their own tweaks to the design (which Apple owns now) but Samsung is still doing their own development.

The Tegra 2 processor kicks butt! I've owned the Viewsonic G-Tablet, only things wrong with it is: SOFTWARE/LCD DISPLAY, other than that, the hardware is "ballin" The Tegra 2 at least from what i Felt between the Galaxy Tab and G-Tablet... felt A LOT Smoother, Flash Videos on the G-Tablet due to the Tegra 2 was astonishing, and smooth as heck. The battery life was literally about 10-12 hrs. The thing would last me more then a weekend.
Flash videos on the Galaxy tab are iffy at times.
In the end of the day due to be not being able to stand the LCD on the Viewsonic Gtablet, and the need for a smaller portable tablet, I returned the Viewsonic G-Tablet for a Galaxy Tab.
Don't get me wrong, IM IN LOVE WITH THE QUALITY of the Samsung Galaxy Tablet, I love everything about it ...........exxxxxcept the processor and battery life.
Dual Core processors seems that it will be the standard now.

+1 Same experience here. The Tegra 2 on the G Tablet just plain smokes. Unfortunately the screen is sooo bad that a lot of us returned it.
Viewsonic G Tab = Taking an Audi Spider to a fast food burger joint.
Samsung Galaxy Tab = Taking a BMW 3 series to Ruth's Cris.
You get there a lot faster on the G Tab but the destination is MUCH nicer on the Galaxy Tab.
I don't know what G-Tablets you used but the one I played with was terrible slow **** until it was hacked with some unofficial update. So what is the manufacturing problem that caused it to be pulled from Staples, they installed too much suck on it? http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/18/viewsonic-g-tablet-pulled-from-staples-stores-manufacturing-de/
Oh man. Off the shelf that device may be the worst electronic gadget released, compared to other modern devices. It is truly night and day after you change the ROM.
If you played with one in a store it isn't the same. I still can't believe a company known for their displays released something like that.
I may pick one up during the first of the year once the returns start flying in after Christmas and the price falls through the floor. It seems to have a lot of developer support.
well, better display = poor battery life
indeed, in 2011, i think its gonna be dual core everywhere
same old, same old
unless they start producing app that needs 2 core to run, i'll stick to my tab
but quoting from someone somewhere in forum who said, that he used toshiba folio with tegra 2 and the performance is about the same, i really doubt that its all about the processor
i'm no techie, but can better display reduce performance?
like in windows generally, to reduce lag and increase performance, any animation, or softer edge, or anything that resulting in better display is advisely disabled
Galaxy Tab 1 or 2?
So now that I hear there may be a new Galaxy Tab coming out by mid 2011 I am wondering if I should invest in a Galaxy Tab right now. I wonder if we will be able to upgrade to Gingerbread on the current tab......

I bought mine the day they came out on Tmo and haven't looked back. You can always look for the next great thing, but then you lose the enjoyment of using the device in the meantime. Will I probably upgrade to the Tab 2 when it comes out - you bet. But for now I am loving my current generation Tab.
exactly. we're at a time now that technology is constantly advancing. It looks like, almost every 2 months we hear of something new, something better, something faster, etc.
if you constantly wait for the next big thing, you'll be waiting till you die.
But do whatever you see fit. =]

Should I or Should I Not??

G'day guys,
I've decided to buy me a tablet for the FIRST time....did a little bit of research and found that the Galaxy Tab is looking the best so far in the market before the Quad-cores ones come out.
Apart from being the thinnest and lightest tablet in the market, compare to other tablets, how is the performance? I have also heard that its screen is also the brightest and most vibrant.
Is this tablet considered to be quite old now?
Any other pros and cons?
THANKS!
If i was you, I would just wait for the upcoming tablets which are coming out early next year. but if you don't want to wait then with all the other tablets out there currently, I would have to say the Gtab 10.1 is by far one of the best with it's light weight and nice display.

How much more will those tablets be when they come out? Because I don't think I'm going to spend that much money on my first tablet as I have recently upgrade my Streak to a GNote
The G-Tab is the best of the first generation of tablets. It's thinner, lighter, built better, has better audio and video drivers, and a better display. However, the first wave of second generation tablets is about to arrive. Asus, Acer,Lenovo, and HTC have already announced quad-core tablets. The Asus Prime is already available for pre-order in the U.S. I'd call it a 1.5 tablet. It's specs are pretty similar to the G-Tab with the addition of a quad-core Nvidia Teg 3 (we have Teg 2) processor. It's shipping with 3.2 but Asus has said it will be the first tablet on the market to get ICS. Lenovo, Acer, and HTC's tablets are 2.0 because they'll have 2MB of RAM (vs. 1MB) and higher definition displays (1920×1200). I'm guessing they'll ship with ICS. So the Asus will be first but soon after will be trumped by better tablets. If you need/want 3G that changes things because so far none of the new-gen tablets have been confirmed in anything but Wi-Fi versions. So, you'll be happy with a G-Tab, especially after it gets ICS which should smooth a lot of the rough edges, but there's better featured choices just around the corner.

[Q] Nexus 10 or Galaxy Note 10.1

Hello everyone.
I'm kind of a newbie here.
I joined a long time ago when I had and Advent Vega tab however I have never posted before.
I have the cash in my pocket for a 10" tablet and was looking at either the Galaxy Note 10.1 or the Asus Transformer Infinity.
I managed to finally make my mind up and go for the Note 10.1 and then Google decided to throw a spanner in the works with the Nexus 10!
So, which do I go for??

the Nexus ten is better in all aspects. the screen is by far better. it has an higher resolution and pixel density than the ipad 3
MarcusSi15: except UI, multi tasking, storage, and stylus support.
nexus runs a phone/phablet UI while the note has a proper tablet UI.
the note has the ability to have certain apps running in the foreground at the same time.
the note also has support for sdxc cards.
and while the nexus can only work with a capacitive stylus, the note comes with a Wacom stylus which is way more accurate.
nexus 10 by far with its screen depth amazing!!!
Easy, buy the nexus. The note 10.1 has a horrible screen on it. My og galaxy tab 10.1 has a better looking screen than the note tablet.

do youself a favor DONT buy the note 10.1. Im using it now but will return it to buy the nexus 10. screen is bad comparing to nexus 10. software lags...
The Note 10.1 is a great tablet, the screen resolution isnt the highest, but it still looks good. If you in to drawing or writing the Note is the choice, its also quad so gaming is amazing as well, its also does multitasking like a champ.
The Nexus is a good looking tablet too, it depends what you find most appealing, A higher res screen with up to date software, or a specialized tablet that also handles any other task better than most tabs out.
The S-pen is great I want a N10 but dont know if i can give up the S-pen.

galaxy all the way :good:
Thanks for the replies everyone and as I expected, the opinion is divided.
I see it like this:
The obvious Pro points for the Nexus 10 are the amazing screen, the updated software (including the lack of Touchwiz), Google's obvious work on it and the price.
However the big negative for me is no SD Card support.
The Pros for the Note are the S-Pen, the Quad Core Processor, expandable memory & multi-tasking, I'm also assuming that there will be a software update at some point too.
The negatives are the screen (a lot lower resolution but still ok) & touchwiz (however that can be changed with a different ROM).
Both are built by Samsung and from what I have seen, in grey they don't look that much different!
I currently have an S3 and love it so I think I way be swaying towards the Note!!
Gnote vs nexus 10= n10
To be truthful its like comparing older vs newer
1. Processor: gnote's quad core is nowhere as fast as n10's a15 is next generation arm soc with Mali t604
2. UI: touchwiz is an abomination of common sense, its bloated, ugly, inefficient compared to stock Ui
3. Updates: Samsung is the worst OEM when it comes to update, I am running jb on my gtab 10.1 yet Samsung thinks it does not deserve update, ludicrous! But nexus devices are always first on update
4. Community support: nexus devices are more favored by devs since sources are available and thus more custom ROM and overall hacking
5. Display: since it beats apple, no point talking about it
6. Ram: gnote=1gb, n10= 2gb
7. Unless u want stylus ( which is barely useful), sdcard ( I think 32gb is reasonably priced and should be enough for majority) I think nexus 10 takes the win in every comparison possible
U might enjoy your s3, but why would you get less for you money when there's option for more?

nah the dual core processor in the Nexus 10 outperforms that quad core processor in the Note 10.1. it's even better than the snapdragon S4 pro in the nexus 4... (wonder why a dual core is more powerful? google it...)
also price is a big factor here. the note 10.1 is 100$ more.. lol The real pros of the Note is the SD slot and the pen.the nexus 10 is better in every other aspect.
But hey, it's your money, your call.
I wanted to give my feedback on the matter. I have had the Transformer prime and infinity, have had the Nexus 7 and currently have a SGS 7.7.
The reason I no longer have Asus's Tegra 3 line is that all of them have had slow internal storage which caused crashing problems. I considered the Note 10.1 before deciding to get the Galaxy Tab 7.7. The main reason I didn't get the note was that I felt it was overpriced (given I didn't care for wacom support). With the Nexus 10's release, I believe that even more strongly. At $400 for a 16gb Note 10.1, its a feasable option because expandable memory matters.
Nexus 10 vs Note
Pros:
Processor: The Nexus 10 has Samsung's next generation processor which is faster than the Note 10.1's.
Screen: It has a higher resolution, higher technology screen.
Nexus program: It will stay updated to the newest software for longer (and with effectively no wait time). It will have a larger development community.
Cons:
Nexus program: It lacks a micro sd card reader so memory is limited to 16/32gb.
Non-Note: It lacks wacom stylus support. Samsung's Note software streamlines multitasking split screen.
Thanks for the reply wtgserpant.
Some interesting points.
1. When you say the CPU is nowhere near as fast, will it really be that noticeable bearing in mind one is dual core and the other is quad?
2. RAM on the note is 2gb isn't it?
3. Do the current Note 10.1 ROM's remove Touchwiz (or at least the useless crap out of it)?
4. I agree with the updates comment, my S3 is unbranded and I received JB after most of the Service Providers!
5. The Note is currently £399 in the UK with £50 cashback from Samsung (Making it £349). Not a bad price really?
Oh and completely off of the subject, I have just seen your location as New York. Stay Safe mate.
If you write a lot go with Note 10.1 (handwrite on lectures, at work, taking notes, scribbling, drawing etc.) - nothing can match the Wacom stylus, nothing. If not - Nexus 10.
@chuglet:
Ad. 1. They should be similar in practise, though Nexus 10 will probably be better optimised being Jelly Bean and Nexus. Nexus 10 has much more powerful GPU but it is needed for so many pixels.
AD. 2. Yes, 2GB. Keep in mind Nexus 10 will probably have more memory for GPU so it will be more like 1.5GB in reality - but it should be more than enough.
Ad. 3. Touchwiz is quite nice on Note 10.1. I wouldn't want it removed. But yes, there are ROMs without it.
Aaaarrrrgggghhhhhh!!!!!
Decisions decisions.
I came to work thus morning with the cash in my pocket to get the note but now I'm not sure!
I don't do a lot of writing or drawing but I like the option of having it there if I want to.
I also like all of the obvious plus points of the nexus; updates, processor, price!!
Should I wait until it is actually released and then really come the two?

I Agree!

I got my Asus TF700T yesterday. Im gonna sell it & buy a Note 10.1

I am a Note II owner and love the phone. Then I really felt like buying an Android tablet. I went and got me Asus Transformer Infinity yesterday & boy Do I regret!! I just put an ad to sell it 100$ off price just to get rid of it & get a Note 10.1 !
Here's what pissed me off. Its a ***** to get the bootloader unlocked. You gotta use Asus unlocker tool & their servers dont respond. its been 48 hrs almost and still no luck.
Theres like only 1 or 2 costume roms available for it and for that this needs to be unlocked.
What pissed me off most that it had only 1gig ram. I thought since it was pricier then a Note 10.1 then its probably at least the same specs.
And damn is it laggy! I guess it could be the ICS' fault and that the JB for it will be smoother but right now it cant be compared to smoothnes of my Note phone at all!
The charger connector is also not standard mini usb which sux and the keyboard for it is too pricey!
One thing I was really looking for was to play Tegra 3 games on it & of the 5 games I tried only 1 was not buggy!
anyways... from what Ive seen from the Note 10.1 dev forum it looks just as promising as my NoteII.
so if anyone here thinks I am making a mistake or something I missed plz let me know.
donno why I even bothered buying this. I was so happy with my Note2. It would have been logical to get another galaxy product!
It was an expensive lesson I even ordered a screen protector for it which costs 30bux inc shipping!
I think you're making the right decision, but....
You should know that the Note 10.1 also doesn't use a mini-usb plug. It's also proprietary.
Don't waste your money.
The Note 10.1 didn't have ANY ROMs out when I bought mine,
and technically there still isn't any official JB for my N8013.
I would wait.
The Note 10.1 is not perfect, no tab is. Based on your post,
you seem to be a hasty kinda buyer cuz you seem to not
research your purchases beforehand. Keep in mind:
The Note 10.1 also has a proprietary non-standard charger/connector.
The few available docks if you want one are rare and pricey as well.
The TF700 has a far better display (by ppi)
The Note 10.1 is not tegra 3 but exynos quad.
Samsung is NOTORIOUS for taking forever to push updates

That's a bit of an overstatement?
No one is saying the Note 10.1 is perfect.
Well, about the lag, the Note 10.1 doesn't lag at all - yes, I'm not saying this just because I own one, it's because it doesn't lag at all.
It's fast and fluid, and with the correct use, it will blaze at an amazing speed.
It has already many custom ROM's available and it's hack-friendly. Samsung releases the open-source very often for their devices.
Oh, and about the updates, Samsung was actually quick to bring in Jelly Bean. It makes your Note 10.1 be twice as fast (in some cases).
You can also have a plethora of keyboards (non-OEM) that are cheap, and some even turn to be covers as well.
All in all, it's a pretty nice buy, but if the non-standard charger/connector is a no-GO, then it's a don't buy this. This tab uses the proprietary connector.

I got my Note last Friday and can say that I love it. The quad core and 2GB of RAM keeps it fast and responsive, something I can't say about my first gen Android tablet that this replaces. I'''ll upgrade my Android phone next year once I see which LTE may come to my area; however, I know it will have similar specs to the Note.

I'm done with ASUS, too...
TF700 has a superb display, and thats about it...mine was laggy, too. OTA wouldn't work, so i did an unlock using ASUS's unlock-tool, tried to update with TWRP and downloaded update.zip - would't work either but kept the tablet in a bootloop. ASUS of course refuses warranty because unlock, tries to charge me repaircosts 90% of a brandnew device - come on guys, kidding??? Sold the keyboard, bought the note 8010, fast and smooth with root and Team Union Jelly Bean...an expensive lesson for me, too...
I'm not bashing the Note. I have the phone and the tab as well and love both.
I'm commenting on the op's qualms about the choice he made, which he regrets.
All I'm saying is the op obviously didn't do any research before buying. Some of the
stuff he hates about the Asus TF are also present with the Note. Which means he
is still making the same mistake of not researching.
The reason I said he should keep it is cuz he seems to be guilt-tripping over a perfectly
good purchase. That and he's going to sell his perfectly good tab and be out $100 bucks
because of it.
And you're making a point of there being cheaper docks for the Note 10.1.
Cheaper dock options are also available for the TF700.
And no, the note does NOT have LOTS of ROMs but dev is heading there. On that subject
I was saying that if he waits, dev will get better for the TF.There are ~20 custom ROMs
on xda for the TF700 and less than ten for the Note 10.1. Two or three for the WiFi only devices.
I still also maintain that Samsung drags its feet when it comes to updates.
The TF had JB since October. As of writing this there still is no JB for the N8013, no
leak, no official. Asus is in fact known for their frequent updates.
The tab has quality control issues as I well. I had to return the first one I bought since
the screen was defective. If you read up, this very forum will confirm that I was not alone
in this. Some report lag with the software. Asus is well known for having poor quality
control though.
With all that said, I considered both tabs when buying, did my research and bought the
Note. I love the one I have now and don't regret it at all. It is amazingly good despite any reviews
saying this or that is better.
I've had both and the Note is a better choice (for me at least). A lot less lag and more options. I have the OG note for my phone and have it running stock android. I much prefer touchwiz on the 10.1. Multi window is awesome and I actually use the IR blaster a lot more than I thought I would. Lots of cool features that vanilla android doesn't offer. I vote Note

Since the Note and N10 have come out the TF700 forum has become a ghost town. Picture tumbleweed. Scott Crossler, the magician who made the TF700 usable, is no longer supporting it. Others are trying to keep up his work but picture "Otto Pilot" from the movie Airplane. Asus has done little or no marketing for the TF700 and it's just sort of floating out there. Asus’ Q3 sales of 10.1" tablets was actually down year-over-year.
Here's my elevator conversation summary of the three most talked about Android tablets:
Note 10.1 - It's the most complete tablet available (any OS) and has unique features like multiview, inking via a Wacom digitizer with palm rejection, S-Note, and a slew of Samsung developed features not available elsewhere that make it a joy to use. It's powerful, has JB (kind of), has great sounding front mounted speakers, gets above average battery life, and has a great display with decent (for Samsung) color accuracy, good contrast, and is nicely bright. There are two downsides and they apply mostly to consumption-only buyers. The 720P display isn't as good on text and computer generated graphics as higher PPI tablets and all the things that make the Note great at creation and productivity add a lot of complexity for people that aren't going to use those features. It's also available with 3G and when so equipped it doubles as a giant phone. The only tablet I'd consider replacing my Note with is another Note with a higher PPI display.
N10 - I, like many people, saw the specs for the N10 before it was released and thought it was "game over" for all other 10.1" Android tablet makers. As it turns out the N10 is a "value" tablet not a "high-end" tablet. It has the highest PPI of any tablet on the planet but it's fairly dim, is pretty warm, and has just average contrast. The number of N10's reported with light bleed on their displays is pretty shocking (at any price) for a Samsung-built tablet. The N10's A15 SoC is state-of-the-art and kick-ass powerful. But, because of the mammoth PPI it's powering, it's no more powerful than the Note. It also has a bizarre quasi-phone UI which wastes a tremendous amount of display real estate and looks awkward on a 10" tablet. It's "Pure Google" which is fantastic for updates but, feature wise, it's a barren wasteland compared to the features bundled with TW. Battery life is below average and recharging time is six hours. The N10 is a great consumption device for the price. And that's about it.
TF700 - The Infinity is nothing more than a gussied up Prime which means its design is over a year old. It's also using a Teg3 SoC whose design is eighteen months old and at the end of its useful life and now used primarily in budget devices. It has no 5GHz Wi-Fi, uses single channel memory (the Note and N10 are dual channel), has 1GB of RAM, has IO issues that Asus has made famous, and is built using outdated components that, in a lot of cases, are from second-tier manufacturers (EG: AzureWave Wi-Fi radios). Asus' QC is dreadful, their repair center in TX horrible, and to unlock the bootloader you agree to completely void your warranty. There are a couple of things that are unique and, IMHO, the only reason people should be looking at a TF700. They are: the keyboard which also extends battery life, expandable storage, and the Super IPS display that makes it great for outdoor use. Someone only looking for PPI is better off with a N10.
So, as someone above said, no tablet's perfect. Of the three, I think living with the Note's perfectly acceptable but lower PPI display involves the least amount of compromise. For someone wanting/needing a higher PPI the N10's a decent choice and a good value. For someone who has to have a keyboard and/or higher PPI and expandable storage there's the TF700. But based on it and Asus' history, declining sales, and price, you're probably better off leaving Android and buying a W8 tablet.

I would really like your opinion on why you think the n8013 in the US has not seen the JB update and why there seems to be not even a peep about it. All promotion of the note 10.1 happens only on the Samsung Mobile International Facebook Page, including the big Christmas vid, but not word about the 10.1 on the Samsung Mobile USA page. It is like the product vanished.

Because HTC, Motorola, and Samsung all suck at managing device updates. Before I got my N2 two weeks ago I was using a Teg3 One X. In an official press release with quotes from their CEO HTC said the Teg3 One X JB roll-out was going to be in October. Taiwan (HTC's home country) got a JB update in October that was so bad the roll out was stopped for the rest of the world. It started again two weeks ago and only five regions out of over a dozen have received it. In between, regional HTC offices have been providing inaccurate and conflicting updates on what the JB schedule really is.
Back to Samsung. Having nothing to do with updates Samsung's s/w management process is a cluster f-k. A single device can have over twenty four "current" versions of s/w running on it because Samsung creates unique s/w for each region a device is sold in. A good example is that while rolling out JB to the N8000 they were still releasing 4.0.4 ROMs in certain regions of the world. So there are newer ICS ROMs than there are JB. HTC rolls out a single version of "current" s/w that all of their devices globally (except specific Asian markets) get updated to within the span of a few weeks. So HTC's managing two versions (global and Asia) of s/w per device while Samsung's managing dozens. And the complexity this creates makes Samsung's update process overly complex and difficult for us on the outside to track and make sense of.
So, the short answer to your question of "where's the N8013's JB update?," is that it's stuck somewhere in Samsung's plumbing waiting to be deployed. It's fun to talk about reasons for delays like patent issues and the like but I really think it’s just Samsung being Samsung. The OG 8.9 on AT&T just got ICS last week after the rest of the world received it in August. Go figure.
The upside is that Samsung's s/w is versatile for end-users to manage with Odin so that when a newer ROM comes out for a different region you can just use that with no repercussions. My Brazilian N2 is running a Panamanian ROM and my also Brazilian Note 10.1 is running a British ROM. At some point soon either someone on XDA or Samfirmware is going to post a complete MD5 file for the N8010. Once that happens every 8010/3 user can update to it using Odin without the current complexity of loading a new ROM followed by using recovery to update it to JB from SD. Look at it this way; at least we have some options. The poor folks waiting on HTC and Motorola just have to wait.
This is kind of old but makes the point of how complex Samsung's s/w managment process is. This is a list of ROMs deployed just for the N8000. Kind of scary.

The problem is twofold:
Compatibility
Portability
Which are two sides of the same coin. You must use Samsung's connector
which limits your options for peripherals, unless you get an adapter. Even
then the lack of a separate HDMI port and the fact that you can't charge via
your PC's USB port (not enough current) are annoying. And you can't use your
devices chargers which means one more charger to carry around.

small price to pay for the dogs bollocks of android tabs, I have been putting off buying waiting for decent specs with micro sd, bought a nexus 7 & took it back next day, felt like cheap plastic crap! I would love to see a review for the note 10.1 based on a price of £268 which is what I paid after cashback, im sure it would get editor's choice awards across the board!

False, Asus has been one of the best ones for their tablet line but Samsung is not bad at all when you compare it with all of the others and has actually been pretty good with their smartphones.
I run the official JB on my Note 10.1 3G and should get the official JB update on my OG Note very soon.
What he should keep in mind is:
- the Note 10.1 has 2GB RAM (a killer spec for how I use it)
- MultiWindow
- the 3G version is one of the handful of 10" tablets in the world (all of them Samsung AFAIK) that have full GSM call and message capabilities (another killer spec for me)
- it has the S-Pen (I don't use it all that often but when I need it it's VERY useful)
- very good and loud stereo audio
- Touchwiz and Samsung added SW, services and personalizations
- I don't know how it would do with games (I don't have a single one installed on my mobile devices) but on everything else the quad-core Exynos is the fastest and smoothest Android tablet I have ever seen.
- very good battery life
- one of the very best non-HD displays
- light and with a PLASTIC back (I HATE metal bodies!!!!)
- it has an IR blaster and you can use it as a smart remote

Xperia Tablet Z vs Note 10.1(or any other tablet) comparison thread

Hi guys I was consider the idea of getting a tablet I would normally want a tablet as for media but I'm also a student so I came across note 10.1 and liked the s pen but recently I came across the xperia tablet z that is absolutely nice and it's a newer device the thing I'd that note 10.1 is a bit old and I'm don't want to throw a lot of money assuming the note successor will be very expensive, anyway right now there's a 50 dollars difference between the two wifi models in amazon so any suggestions?

Thank you!
I recommend either buying the Tablet Z now or wait for successor to the Note 10.1. Unless you really need a tablet with an s pen now.

I think Samsung have a presentation for new stuff at June 10, they might show it there. The Note 10.1 is almost a year old now I think ?
/Edit: It's June 20. June 10 is Apple.
I'm a student, I've thought the same thing. Honestly what made me order the Xperia Tablet Z is the design. I can't stand Samsungs cheap plasticky design, and its UI is absolutely horrible. The S pen is the only reason to consider it, but when testing I learned that I can write just as fast with the swype-function on the Sony device.

It depends. Not everybody needs it. However, for me, multi-window is very interesting and have an edge when comparing to any other tablets (except Win8 Intel tabs, but you know, normal window's apps are not touch optimized)
I have had the Tab Z since Friday, and the Note 10.1 since it launched in the USA.
Tab Z without any hesitation... The S-Pen is neat at first, but gets to be "eh whatever" pretty quickly. Samsung's ****ty UI skin makes the tablet look ugly as ****, sound awful, and slows it down significantly. On top of that, if you're here on XDA, you probably care about development, and the Note 10.1 had next to no development for it, partly because Samsung didn't bother to comply with the GPL and released kernel source that didn't match what was running on the device at all. It took me two weeks to get a working wifi driver on source-built kernels.
If you care about CyanogenMod at all - the choice is obvious. All of the former Exynos4 CM maintainers are mostly retired from Exynos4 work, and I can tell you, of the two Note 10.1 maintainers, one (espenfjo) is currently retired from CM work, and the other (myself) has barely touched the unit in 2-3 months. Meanwhile, two of the four former Exynos4 maintainers have the Tablet Z, and a few other CM maintainers do too, with more likely to come.

I agree with your points of view. I'm also quite interested in future development and I hope more and more devs get the Tablet Z. Entropy, I think I've read in the XTZ AOSP forum (CM 10.1 thread, specifically) that you might check the CM port for our WIFi-only devices, am I right? :fingers-crossed: I hope I am. Sorry by N10 I meant NEXUS 10 rather than Note
I think the Note is probably powerful enough but has a low res screen, something like the transformer infinity has the resolution but Tegra 3 doesn't cut it at 1080p.
Both the Nexus 10 and Tablet Z are powerful with high res screens.
New Transformer with Tegra 4 is announced now, which is probably more powerful than both and has similar res to the Nexus 10.
..
Asus is crazy today, I have to say that. All of their offers are crazy (for specs or for price).
The new Asus Infinity
http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/03/a...-pad-infinity/
Display: 2560x1600
SoC: Tegra 4
4K HDMI + USB 3.0 port
Price: $399 (Tablet) $499 (Tablet + Dock)
The new Asus Memo Pad FHD 10 inch
http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/03/a...d-10-hands-on/
Display: 1920x1200
SoC: CloverTrail+ 2x1.6GHz
Price: Unknown, but given the price $399 of new Asus Infinity and there are two versions 16 and 32 gigs, I guess it will be $250 and $300 (the MemoPad HD 7 inch is $150)
I think Sony faces the payoff of delaying its Tablet Z. These two tablets are so powerful. The new Asus Infinity has better specs in any area with the same price but having a excellent dock (which many love). The MemoPad's specs are not far from Tablet Z (better CPU with less power consumed, weaker GPU), the possibility of installing normal Windows 8 due to Intel CPU, and the price should be much more sweet.
I have three Asus tablets (tf101, tf201, tf701), and I know their issues (stupid update, bad build quality, and something special issues of each tablet) and swear not to buy another one, but as I said, these offers above are two sweet, and I think Asus has the experience to pass some stupid things like cheap NAND (which make horrible I/O on my tf701) or wifi.
What do you think?

O think the prices are very interesting but as you say asus doesn't give me the confidence of Sony, indeed the infinity has better specs but I think their updates will be even worse than Sony, besides tablet z's design is nicer although I think they need to lower the price to be able to compete as Toshiba has also launched two powerful devices

I would wait for the next model of whatever Sony got, I know ppl keep saying better hardware come out every time in 6 months but, their new DUO 13 is TRILUMINOS display, looks like all their flagship products from this point forward are all TRILUMINOS.

MobileTechReview comparison of XTZ and N10
Lisa Gade, who I've noticed visiting these forums, has a nice comparison between the XTZ and the Nexus 10. It's pretty consistent with my own impressions: N10 is a great value and pure Android; XTZ has more bells and whistles and appeals to people (like me) who put a premium on things like weight...
