Did make backups of most of it with titanium backup though.
Don't delete sony ericson home , it's the standard launcher fixed this by holding the search button, voice searche for android market, entered the android market from the browser and instaleld launcherpro. anyone got a backup of the standard SE launcher for me?
Got 110MB ram used after start-up now. Seems nice to me (used to be around 170-180 if I recall correctly).
PS I advice against removing office suite as it is used for viewing documents (like word documents, pdf files and those things), unless you got some replacement offcourse.

which version of titanium did you use the free version or the pro and is it easy to get to the apps to be uninstalled.
I used the free version of titanium. It's quite easy. You got a list of all apps that are installed, they are color coded (red=standard phone files, green=standard files with cache you can clear and white is user installed files). Just tab the app and select uninstall. Selecting back-up will only back-up data like preferences and saves I think.
Wornining, don't freeze or un-install SE Home, because it is your home screen and your phone will never unlock the screen. I had to go to titaniam backup and defrost it.
ok just a few questions before I jump in, what does the freezing option actually do?. And also if I was to backup an application first then unistall it, can I then restore it.?

I'm not sure but I think it's like a uninstall that you can put back. You freeze it, rest of the system think it's gone, you unfreeze, and it's back as it was before. Could be used as a test before uninstalling.
OK so by freezing it this actually creates more memory?

I think more ram but not more storage space, uninstalling should safe storage space.
ok froze a couple of apps, but no difference on ram, so do i actually have to unistall the app, after backup, ?so that i can restore it should i want to use it?
if you un-installed any stock apps and you want them back, you propebly can get them here:

My device survived around 60 hours, including 1.5 hours of gaming (super mario kart to be ecaxt), the occasional whatsapp/skype/texting, around 20MB of downloads and some surfing + playing music on my earplugs for a few hours. Still got 15% left (dimmed the screen brightnes when I was around 50%). Deleting bloatware really seems to help.
Hey all,
I have also uninstalled a pile of bloatware, mostly covered by what has been mentioned already. Some of the names I don't remember but I will write what is on my list via Titanium:
iPlayer, magicsmoke, protips, stk, touchpal, thesims3, facebook, twitter, geniewidget, talk, music, timescape, support, digitalclock, owstore, retaildemo, setupwizard, touchnote, vodafoneshop, vodafoneupdates, whatsapp.
From the earlier list, I don't recommend anyone remove the Get Games unless they are sure they don't want any from the "more games" when you slide open your phone. I had thought I could still get the full list of games via market, but games like Backstab aren't. You can't get these games via emulators either.
My phone has went from booting in around 5 minutes to less than 1 minute & I had initially freed RAM up to the point where I was >200Mb.
The phone flies now, you can really see the difference. I'm also keeping widgets to a minimum & I highly recommend no-one puts on the useless task managers to kill processes (which themselves drain the battery). Simply use Running Services within settings. Oh, and I now only have 13 running services
My battery life I haven't noticed yet because the phone is stuck to my hand
Good luck all,
Rixter
Battery life is much better! Charged my phone 5 days ago. Made some calls, played games and it is still 50% charged

Lol, I hear ya. I'm only starting out with Android so the curve is still upward. From what I read from other sources, task killers are only useful if you have them set to automatically kill because the offending services continually restart. Then it's a looping killing field, as you say chicken & egg time. The way forward is to root & remove the apps
I'm trying to be good by using the inbuilt OS to find out status rather than add more hoggers such as battery widgets, task killers etc. Gotta stretch that battery to it's max.
I still haven't had time to play many games yet!!

4.5 hrs of usage (push mail, whatsapp, sms, a few phone calls) with only 55%.
Hi all im new to the forum and have a few questions about rooting my xperia play and wondered if some of you in the know could help?...
im interested in using gingerbreak v1.20 to do the root, i have read the tutorial and understand most of it and from what i have read on the forums other XP users have had varied success.
my questions are...
1. my phone is on a vodaphone contract and im not sure if its sim locked (to that specific network) and does this effect the root?
2. my phone had some kind of update downloaded to its software from vodaphone about 1 week ago gingerbread 2.3.2 build number 3.0.A.2.184 other people with this version root ok?
3. so just to clarify i was wondering if that update ive had has hindered my chances of the rooting also if my phone being locked to a specific network (e.g vodaphone) is a problem?
4. last but not least, if my phone fails to reboot after the rooting process, how hard is it to put it back to original version? (like do i need more software to fix the failure or can i just remove the battery wait 30secs and itll be back to normal)?
i know these may seem very basic questions to u veteran rooters, but id like to get involved i just wanna have more knowledge myself before i jump in, and would appreciate your feedback, loving my xperia play and i want to improve it and not brick it
cheers in advance
I am with tmobile and also received the ota update before I rooted.
SIM lock doesn't effect root.
I can tell you that the update won't effect running Gingerbreak at all.
You shouldn't have any worries using Gingerbreak as is.
It is purely an apk and will either successfully root your device or will not.
This is the easiest method of rooting i've ever used.
I was an android n00b when I got my hero & had to go through the method of creating a gold card & reverting to an older build & flashing flashrec!
To be honest, now my play is rooted in probably won't even bother using custom roms in the future.
I did all that with my hero and am happy with the plays UI.
I just wanted root to free up more space.
I'd also recommend researching setinstalllocation2 on here.
Doing this natively installs everything to sd and is worth the time.
cheers for the speedy reply DeadlyDazza, yeah id like to remove some of the stock rubbish to free up some space i was also hoping to do a small overclock, is this possible with a basic root? using the android overclocking apps?
im still nervous about the reboot and it not coming back on :S
@DeadlyDazza did you use gingerbreak on an empty/formatted sd card like described in the tutorial or does it also work with a sd full of installed apps? ( i really dont want to delete all my apps and data)
cheers covux
I have a fair bit of installing custom Roms on Android phones and i can honestly say this -
Unless you are rooting the phone in order to help develop custom roms and tweaks there really is no point in rooting it at the current moment.
Gingerbread is excellent at managing apps and the Xperia Play is designed so that games run independently from your homescreen.
"Trimming the fat" will offer almost zero benefit at the moment.
My advice is to wait a while, let the experts put together some custom Roms and gain access to the Kernel, allowing us to overclock.
Until then, i do not see a reason to root at all.
Unless you just, like me, wants to get rid of bloatware and ads in various apps and other benefits with root access
+1 on liking the XP UI and don't want to flash and mod this phone as I did with my HTC desire hd
If you just want that, root it now and keep your locked bootloader and enjoy the XP as it is
Regards Dousan...
Rooting does have many benefits, which mine was to free up more space on a device that, although is designed for gamers, seems to fall very short of.
Also to use root enabled apps such as cache mate.
Apart from the space issues, which have now been resolved by rooting & setinstalllocation2, I'm more than happy with my Xperia Play.
Will I be saying the same in 6 months? Probably not, I'll probably be wanting a fresher feel.
But that depends on how much support SE give the Play (my last device was the Hero & HTC was very slow with their support).
In answer to the question about running Gingerbreak with blank sd.
I had a spare 8gig that I formatted & used.
I didn't want to risk losing any data & couldn't be bothered to back up the 14gig on my card.
Although I have heard a few people say that running Gingerbreak is completely safe & won't erase any data.
Didn't erase anything on my sdcard when I rooted my XP, would still recommend a backup before using gingerbreak I was just lazy and went ahead without doing a backup. Did one today...
Regards Dousan...
@DeadlyDazza, @Dousan thanks for the info, i think i will also use a spare blank sd.

How exactly?
Whenever I navigate home away from a running game (such as to check a text) my XP shuts down the game.

I read in one of the reviews/specs for the phone that the homescreen and gaming operate independently meaning that when you play games, the homescreen sits in another part of memory or works in another processing thread or something.
The point being made was that whatever app you have open in the homescreen, won't make your games stutter or lag when you are playing them.
Maybe an expert can clarify this.
As for your problem, i can say that something is wrong with your setup for your games to be unloaded out of memory and shutdown when you navigate to the homescreen.
I would imagine you have an appkiller that is setup to close all running apps when you navigate to the homescreen.
I can't stress the importance of not using app killers with the gingerbread o/s. They are not needed, they will not improve performance of the phone, they will not make you battery last longer.
In fact, app killers will make your battery last SHORTER on gingerbread, since you will be using alot more processing power to load and unload them.
I don't use any app-killers.
Do you navigate to your homescreen with the back button, the home button or holding the home button and selecting a new icon?
Ok I have just performed 3 tests.
1) Emulator test - had tiger genesis running playing sonic 2. Hit the home button and navigated instantly to home screen. Tiger genesis happily sits in the notification bar. Navigating back to tiger genesis sees it exactly as before I left it.
2) Playstation pocket game crash bandicoot - loaded the game and hit the hom
e key. Same as above. The game sits in the notification bar and returns to the exact state you left it in when you return back to it.
3) Xperia play game Backstab - loaded the game and hit the home key. The game did not sit in they notification bar, but reselecting the game from the xperia play menu put the game onscreen at the exact position I left it from.
I can not re-create your situation where navigating to the homescreen makes the game unload from memory.
I made his post on my xperia play btw and performed each test while making this post. My browser doesn' t even unload from memory.

Usually just by tapping the home button. I only hold home for hotswitching & only navigate back to quit.

So does it only happen with a certain game? All games?
What about apps?
I find it hard to believe that hitting the home key unloads anything from memory unless you have changed some major settings.
Using Xperia Play games.
If I go to home when playing or paused the game unloads.
Not changed any settings at all.

Ok try this and tell me what happens.
- Slide the phone open
- Load Bruce Lee
- Get into an actual fight
- Hit the home key
- Slide the phone down
- Slide the phone up
- Load Bruce Lee
After doing this, my game has paused, but is exactly where i left it. The game did not unload, and therefore did not reload. It was exactly as i left it.
If yours does not do the same, and you havn't changed any settings or are running any app killers, then i suggest you make sure you have the latest revision of firmware and try again.
Bruce Lee stays in memory ok.
Star Battalion & Dungeon Defenders quit as soon as you hit home.

I can confirm that Star Battalion stays in memory after i hit the home screen on my phone.
It shows identical behaviour as Bruce Lee.
When you hit home, and reload the game, the game has paused itself and when you unpause, the game is exaclty as when you left it.
Can't confirm Dungeon Defenders behavious since i do not own it.
If you continue experiencing problems, i would suggest you have faulty memory and request a handset replacement.
I have been experiencing an issue with the Game Shadowgun I am hoping I may be able to get a little help with. The issue I am experiencing is that the game will pause itself every minute or two. This is actually the only game I have ever had any issues with. The game is fairly intense system wise so I'm thinking it's pausing itself to play catch up, either way it's very annoying, and the game looks sick so have been desperately trying to figure out a way to prevent this. One thing I have been playing around with is Chainfire 3D witch has solved many game related issues on my phone. Unfortunately I still have not had any luck with game. I guess that would go without saying or there would be no need for the post.. Anyhow, If anyone else who purchased the game during the $. 45 sale has had this issue, would greatly appreciate knowing its not just me. Also, any suggestions on a Chainfire 3D configuration or plug-in that would work well with CM7 on the Kindle Would also be greatly appreciated..
I’m using the IngCr3at1on 2/26 build with IntersectRavens 2/22 Kernel.,
I am not Supercharged but had been using Auto-killer with a very mild preset and no Kernel Tweaks. Thought it may have been responsible so have since uninstalled but doing so did not change anything.
Played around with different Governors like Interactive, Ondemand, and my personal favorite Hotplug. I have also tried setting Noop as the scheduler.
With Chainfire I’m basically just starting out with reduce texture quality and a few others but have honestly just been trying the game and then starting back again clean before trying other settings each time so basically starting from scratch with each attempt.
Also tried the VM heap size at both 64 and 48, been at it a few nights now and am on a mission.
Which version of CM7 are you using? Any Super Charge scripts enabled? What setting are you using for your cpu governor? Sorry for all the questions but it will help eliminate the issue. If you've changed a lot of settings in ChainFire you may want to reset everything to default for now.

My bad on the details or lack of, Will expand on the post above.
On another note, just now made another attempt at the Transparent Status Bar. Had the same issue as before but had an idea so went into Titanium, froze my launcher and Status-Bar then defrosted the launcher followed by the Status-Bar and Walla, Transparent Status Bar. Thanks again for taking the time to put that together for me. Sorry got mixed-up in the order of that as I just reproduced it and it worked defrosting the launcher first followed by Status-Bar. Either way its now working. Arge, whats wrong with me today, its Status-Bar followed by Launcher.
Looks like I may have figured it out. Really did not expect this to work but been playing an hour without a pause, beating my previous record of 3 minutes. Read this on another devices thread.
1 install Shadowgun
2 Open and download the extra packages
3 Move the games folder from the Android SDcard directory to the SDcard Root directory
4 Uninstall Shadowgun
5 Set Chainfire with all openGL settings checked except RGBA and Unroll
6 Install and apply NVIDEA plug-in,
7 Reboot into Recovery and wipe caches
8 Reboot and install Shadowgun from the Market or whatever they call it these days but don’t open after installing
9 Move the folder from step 3 back from whence it came so it will not need to be downloaded again
10 Open Shadowgun.
Did not expect this would work but so far so good.
Edit: No go, worked for an hour or so after doing the above but then the following day it was back to constant pausing every 2 or 3 minutes. May try an older Kernel. Having the same issue now with Dead Space and being that I have not read many 3D game complaints I'm guessing its just me.
Hi guys,
I just installed WIUI 2.6.15 on my precious defy (red lens). The ROM itself looks awsome and everything runs smoothly than ever.
only 2 bugs I can't figure out:
1. My market FC's while browsing some apps. If I try over and over again it might actually work from time to time.
2. All of my apps work prefectly. EXCEPT for games. When I open any game, it'll show me the loading screen, begin to show me the next screen and just as the image shows it goes BOOM: the game restarts, goes back to the loading screen and looping again and again untill I terminate the process.
I tried finding a solution for days, and I'm desperate... Any ideas?
THX A LOT!
edit:
BTW, if it helps, the games i've tried so far:
Draw something, Blood & Glory, Yoo Ninja
Fruit Ninja - dunno if this helps, but fruit ninja works after installing CloseFeint app
Well my S4 is running MF3, rooted and bloatware frozen... however sometimes it lags, even my S2 running Shostock 3.0.2 (based on 4.1.2) is way more snappier. So all you guys with MF3 what are you doing to make this crap MF3 worth the "S4 name" ?
Thanks.
I have been on a quest to see "lag" on S4 which I cannot say I have seen (or it is in places I am not paying attention to)
However I have been checking out some apps that state they make you device run like new or something towards those lines. maybe I can help you
#1 Get XPOSED FRAMEWORK from apps store (free) - this is like a gateway to some cooler fucntionality
#2 Get GREENIFY from apps store (free) - read instructions - do not greenify clocks or messaging apps or they wont work
--use common sense basically, I greenify all games, browsers....stuff that I start interaction with.
#3 Get WANAM XPOSED from apps store (free) - here you can adjust colors and a lot of functionality.
---one thing of interest is ENABLE BOOST MODE (enables benchmark boosting for CPU to achieve MAX power)
#4 Get Android Tuner (free/paid) - I paid for mine. However this app lets you tune every aspect of the OS, if you're a power linux guy you'll pick up on what it is doing.
---however this provides a feature called TRIM which keeps the drive/storage at top performance. Google "ssd trim" for details if you dont know what it is
Now I can use these apps *blindly* and force my phone to run slow, but if I disable them (back to stock settings) I seem to run just fine
A word of caution:
Throwing every "enhancement" feature from different 3rd party application on top of each other can have a negative effect.
*Ever run 2 decent antiviruses at the same time? They play tug-of-war with infected files and you lose performance

Thanks for those recommendations.. they look awesome will try one at a time except the XPOSED FRAMEWORK.. until a flashable image of MF3 is rolling, I'm trying to avoid messing with framework...
But well this is lag is kinda weird.. for example after using the browser or any other app for a bit of time then when press home button it lags to show the default screen and when it does the whole "desktop" is been redrawed of course this not always happen, sometimes it's very fast.
Also sometimes scrolling between the windows is very fast but sometimes very slow. And this lag is present when using several launchers, apex pro, nova or touchwiz, and i don't have much widgets running.. exactly the same as my galaxy s2 which can handle all this light usage without a problem..

Gee I dont experience any of those problems.
Scratch that - I do get desktop redrawn if I play a heavy game for a while. I do remember seeing it put back the weather and the icons. Nothing I would consider a showstopper nor can I make it happen on demand
I am using the default Samsung Touch Wizard and no other launcher
Good luck in your quest of the Lag Beast
