Hey Guys
I'm back
(For these who dont know me: I was here since the 8ers are out and have had a bunch of projectes )
Whatever i would like to discribe you my own way to get the Cinema Plugin for free besides Urukdroid.
5 Steps:
1) Go to the Rescovery Menu -> Update Firmware
2) Download the Firmware Version 2.3.26
3) Plugin your Archos via USB and copy the aos file
4) Press the Power Button to install the firmware.
5) Install Urukdroid the "normal" way !
How this works?
This trick works because in the firmware Version 2.3.26 Archos has missed to put in the "Lock" for HD/DTS/etc.
Now you can use Urukdroid for the normal use and if you want to see a film you just Boot the Archos into "Android" (The normal Archos Firmware) by pressing the Volume Down Button and selecting "Android".
Have Fun!

Welcome back. I've always been curious why archos made it this way - you have the player but if you want to play all kinds of movies you have to buy their plugin. Isn't it enought that we bought their product already? When I tried to play a movie for the very first time and I was forced to pay for it I was like "whatta hell?!". Glad to see some new tips and tricks about our kinda forgotten devices.

Archos made this since their 7th Generation, the 5 Internet Tablet^^
I have bought the Cinema Plugin for this Device for 15 Euro.
A friend of me has just bought the Plugin for his Generation 9 Device.
We, the 8ers, are lucky to have this trick so we dont need to pay for the plugin
And are Devices arent forgotten
Many people said that before you, at the beginning the people said that we`ll never get a Rom or Gingerbread or whatever^^ But we did it

Forgotten by Archos not by developers of custom roms
The reason why Archos did that is because unlike alot of .... manufacaturers they care about intellectual Property.
As the two things you buy with the plugin are MPEG2TS and AC3 playback and they are quite expensive and the licences have to be paid depending on the number of devices, Archos decided to not include them in every device.
As not that many really need those two codecs it's good that for ex i don't have to pay for that.

Can I do this even with Urukdroid, currently installed. I also notice, this is an old post, has there been any other way to accomplish this.
Anyways thanks Lenn for the tip.
When I tried updating the firmware, it came up with an error - Firmware too old for your hardware (221).
Help please?
Thanks,
I tried this with a 70b IT (Froyo) and I get Update Failed (207).
What can I do to get round this?

Hello,
As i will be getting my Exec (hopefully) tomorrow, i thought this topic would not only help me greatly but also others.
What are the first ten things to do when you get your new exec?
e.g
1) Get a case
2) Install Software (name here) to use it as a TV remote
Thanks folks
Since this is going to be different from person to person, why not just check this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=31697
It covers most/all questions...
Here's what I did:
1). Get case - recommend Proporta Alu-Leather
2). Get screen protector - recommend Martin
3). Get GPS System - recommend BT-338
4). Get Car Mount - recommend Brodit/Proclip
5). Get SD Card - recommend 2-4GB
6). Get system tools software - recommend free software
7). Learn to tweak it - recommend XDA Devs - you guys rock!
8). Get desk charger
9). Get Bluetooth Headset - no recommendations
10). Kick yourself in the ass for spending so much on yourself and nobody else.
There you go. Hope that helps.

I think it's going to be for my husband: "Kick himself in the ass for spending so much on his lovely wife.."
For me, the top ten would be:
1) Get Screen Protector
2) Get Case (im using the soft leather case for the ordinary dictionary/translator... it's the same size, fits perfectly)
3) Get BT headset -- using jabra but i want the one with the lcd display
4) Pair BT with phone - Total Voice Commander
5) Install TCMPM and load your sd with movies
6) Personalize phone - change wallpaper.... Im using a hello kitty wallpaper-- got a right to be cheezy... Makes my dopod less intimidating.. Anyone who opens it says, "how cute..."
7) Load ringtones and Install PocketZenPhone
8) Sync phone with pc (i think this should be #3)
9) Install MSReader and load phone with ebooks
10) Show off discreetly to close friends... I dont want just anybody touching my phone with his grimy hands...
screen protector definitely.
A couple of mundane settings to change:
disable error reporting and
disable receive all incoming beams.
Get your activesync working to get your PIM data loaded.
Definitely consider a bluetooth headset (I use Sony Erickson HBH 662 and I'm happy with it).
Definitely helps to have some program to close programs instead of just minimize them (I use smallmenu).
Get your internet connection working.
Start tweaking, probably best to start with the appropriate section of the universal wiki.
Follow this forum and learn more and more.
Enjoy!!

Hi,
Would you tell me what is TCMPM, and how to get it. Thx
It is a media player. Go to http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/download to download.

And it's utterly fantastic. a gazillion times better than WMP. Streaming movies over a wifi network without any silly pre-compression/reduction is fantastic.
Big Ups for TCPMP
And the most important thing for me on TCPMP is FULL screen!

On that point - why should we beg/borrow/steal/buy what we need to get a decentOS?
MS is getting lazy - THIS version of Windows Mobile should have come with WMP at least as comparable feature and performance wise as TCPMP. Also a decent task switcher and window closer, like GSPocketMagic, an RSS Reader like Egress, File Explorer like Resco, Pic viewer like Resco, Radio Streamer like Resco, decent Registry Editor, GPRS Monitor type program and so on...
I guess the good side of it is that other programmers are getting income from creating great apps.. apps which are better than MS' creation. It's healthy competition and in the end, we, the consumers, are enjoying the fruits of their labor
Merry Christmas!
Just a short follow up question.
The TCP media player seams to work great on AVI files created with the divx plug in, however, mpeg files play rather badly.
They hang every couple of seconds, jitters and jump.
However, they play nicely with win media player.
Are you others getting this?
Thanks,
Frode
When MS adds something and does something too well, they get sued for Anti-Trust, if they don't, they get complaint at, lose-lose.
MS have been known to put in some really basic software so 3rd party software developers can earn on the full version or better versions of the software.
so can't really blame them.
frodebass, try Pocket TV for playing MPEG. TCMP is really good for DivX, but why use MPEG when it's a space hog?
The first few things I would do are:
1. Don't charge the battery. Use it until its at 20% and then do a fully charge for 8 hours
2. Check for dead pixels on the screen
3. Take a few photos to make sure there are no dead pixels in the camera
4. Don't install a new ROM unless you need to. And if do want to make sure you hard reset before a ROM update
5. Don't install non-WM5 s/w at all. And if you want to install any third-party apps check here at the forum and always use the latest version. In general avoid apps that have Today screen plug-ins as they seem to the source of many problems from what I can gather
6. Show off your new "toy" to your friends/work colleagues!
Hi everyone,
This is my first post, so hello. I got my HTC Wizard (T-Mobile MDA branded) earlier this week and have been experimenting with it quite a bit since. One thing I really wanted working, since I'm a huge Sonic fan (and I legitimately own all of the cartridges, don't pirate!) was to get a working Genesis emulator going on the Wizard. I couldn't even get PocketGenesis to load, and MorphGear's genesis support is ludicrously slow on a Wizard, so I was about to give up hope until I found PicoDrive. This free emulator really needs more love, the core is written in ARM assembler and it BLOWS AWAY the alternatives. It only has two downsides: no sound, and no save state support, at least in the version available on the developer's site. I decided to fix these problems.
Now let me emphasize I did NOT write this program. The guy who did is awesome and you can visit his site at www.finalburn.com.
I downloaded the source and enabled the sound he had disabled for the release version. However, it sounds horrible, so I've left it disabled. I _DID_ add proper save states to the emulator, however. (It was a simple modification of the existing code for loading/saving movies) Since this was a feature I thought others would benefit from (and also just to encourage others to try PicoDrive) I thought I would post my modified version to this site. You'll find the Load State and Save State options on the Options menu during play.
An additional tip - by editing the PicoConfig file, which you'll find in your device's root directory, you can remap the key config for the emulator. If there's interest I'd be willing to add a GUI to help you do this in a week or two when I have time. (We're nearing the end of the college semester currently, so I'm pretty busy at the moment)
Let me know what you guys think, and enjoy! The attached file is an ARM exe, just copy it to your device and run.
Hi, where can i get the games to run with this emulator?
I used to love the sonic and mario games but i'm useless with finding the games.
Thanks for any help i get in advance,
Ash
I really can't tell anyone where to get ROMs; I don't want to do anything of questionable legality on this site.
Is there anyway of getting this to work in landscape so that you can use the keyboard??
oh wow i hadnt thought of that, id pay real money for a spectrum and bbc emu working in landscape and using the keyb
@maltloaf: i'll look into that in a few weeks and see what i can do!
as far as landscape orientation for picodrive, that's definitely something that can be done. i'll get back to you guys in about 3 weeks with a new version that'll have the most recent picodrive engine, as well as landscape/portrait orientation (i agree, i vastly prefer to use landscape mode) and keyboard config within the app.

Picodrive
Hello. I'm new to both forums and the XDA2. I cannot express how cool this version of picodrive is!
I have to say it took me a while that you have to copy the exe file to the xda then run it.
After that I couldn't figure out how to control it until I accidentally mashed some buttons.
Since then!!!
I love this emu, I love the games and now that it has been fiddled with it's so much better.
Thankyou!
I found a new version of Picodrive 0.047 on this forum and it work's perfectly! Fast, sound, landscape, full screen, remap button ability, and save. About halfway down the page is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/vie...=0&postorder=asc&highlight=picodrive&start=25
I have to admit that I am overwelmed with all of the info regarding the xv6800. I just got mine this past Friday. I have not activated it yet although I did have Verizon transfer my contacts from my Moto E815. I am holding off activating until I learn more about the phone.
The feature that attracted me the most about the phone was the WiFi capabilities. I do not plan on getting the data plan. I do not know how to find out if the phone has Win Mobile 6.1. I would like to have it serve as a GPS.
Some questions:
If I am at Win 6.0 should I upgrade?
Is anyone aware of ant tutorials on using the phone and O/S ?
Is there a way to activate GPS by basically down / uploading a program and clicking on it?
What applications would be best? I plan on surfing, web-mailing, listening to music, working with the office applications.
Is there any "must have" hardware I should get?
Thanks and I appologize it my questions seem very basic but as I said, I am overwhelmed.

1 not until you understand what the phone has to offer stick with 6.0
2 not me
3 yes but phone must be unlocked gpstoday and baf gps toggle are the best for me
4 surfing=skyfire music=s2p

didnt it come with an interactive cd with a tutorial? mine did :S
if you are interested in musicand watching video you should definitly get the slunkworks flash bundle and tcpmp media player so you can goto you tube and watch streaming videos the way it should be done on mobile
i have uploaded the files for you if you are interested...install tcpmp first then the flash bundle,,if you need assistance let me know or search for "cab instyallation"
last about your GPS there has been people saying they have gotten it to work through google maps but it requires rom flashing first...but like GeLoPeZ said get to know your stock rom first...maybe youll like it
flaws
the fone does have a few flaws tho...the youchscreen is pointless wen it comes to small icons or scrolling...unless u want to get out your stylus everytime
it can be slow at times but nothing a little registry edit cant help out with a little...
almost everything has to be manually shut off or closed through running programs screen likr data connection etc,,,unless you get a few programs that can stop that hassel
the touch keyboard isnt worth anything its awful...unless, like i said you want to keep getting out your stylus
cant customize text message ringtones with custom ringtones
in all...most all these things can be fixed thgrough rom flashing or free downloadable apps and cabs i give it an 8 out of 10
hope i was helpful

FTouchSL fixes that issue. There's a free version somewhere on this forum, but for a little over 10 bucks (USD), it's worth it to get the commercial (kinetic scrolling!).

You can.... Start > Settings > Sounds and Notifications
From the "Event" menu, select "Messaging: New Text Message" and select the tone you want.
I think the OP was saying that you cant "Assign" a specific "tone" to a user. Just a tone for all incoming texts.
I might be off base......but I don't think so.
this is to enhance your phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2526683 try it

Yes you should. There is really no reason not to. Just remember that flashing the new ROM will delete all of your data, so back it up first.
6.1 is useful for a variety of reasons:
1. You can solve your GPS problem by doing it (see below)
2. It has a task manager built in
3. It has Remote Access built in (so if you need to connect with your work desktop, it's nice to have it....you can go and load RA anyways with 6.0, but it doesn't come with it)
4. Has some better screens for managing connections (IMO).

Why yes there is! Only recently some amazing devs on this forum (skywing) devised an amazingly simple process for activating internal GPS. I just did it last night and it took literally 3 minutes to do and I now have Live Search, Google Maps, Amaze, and two other GPS based apps running on it.
Refer to this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=424387
There are a lot of posts in that forum, but the upshot is either do the very simple manual install mentioned in the first post (I did it, I am no expert, took me 3 minutes) or go to near the end and look for the URL of the wiki that has the latest one click cab files to install.

I use Skyfire to browse the web. It is comparable to the iphone browser and it works great. It is in beta, but so far I have only encoutnered a few websites that freak out on it (e.g. www.projectgutenberg.org).
For music, I like pocketmusic 5.1, a freeware app from Pocketmind. It only does mp3 files 9the shareware version does all file types) but it has a great touch friendly skin and nicely shuts off the phone but still plays music to save battery power. It works with my bluetooth headphones seemlessly. Only issue is that while active it commandeers your hard buttons, so if you want to use the hard buttons on the phone for other than music control you have to quit the app.
Other nice apps (I won't list them all!):
1. Total Commander in place of File Explorer. Allows you to have two windows open and drag and drop files.
2. Vade Mecum is a plucker reader that I use to read ebooks on my phone.
3. Live Search and Google Maps are an absolute must.
4. I like Icontact (Burt's version) which you can find on these forums. It is a finger friendly contact program that works wonderfully.
5. I dig Youtube player. You don't need it with Skyfire, but I like it for playing files I download off of youtube. It will search youtube and play video directly or download it in .flv format for later playing. Useful to save the clips I watch a lot (Monty Python sketches, Weird Al videos, etc.) on my phone.
Those are the biggies, IMO.

Devin
Hi,
I need some help finding out which phone to buy. We are a family of three and need one each. It will primarily be used to access google calendar (multiple calendars), Gmail, Google maps (with GPS) and browsing. Is a Taatoo not good enough for this? We have been offered three cheap used devices, but I do not know if we should buy a newer/bigger android phone instead.
What do you think - is Tattoo sufficient?
Thanks,

Well, if you are not into the stuff of OS upgrades and so on, then Android 1.6 (Tattoo's OS) pretty much does the stuff you primarily want to do...but if you also want bluetooth file transfer you should look forward to get a device for which an android 2.1 OS is available..
Thanks,
btw - is there a android 1.6 emulator somewhere so I can see what it can do?
And last question - if we buy a tattoo can we upgrade to a newer version of android (i know about the 2.1 update not being avalible - but is there a 1.9-2.0 upgrade?). I can see you use a bootimage - can that be downloaded somewhere?
Thanks,
(and sorry for the studpid questions)
There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers
Back to topic:
About emulators - you can download Android SDK 1.6, which features an emulator you can configure and play around with freely if you want...sorry, have no tutorial, but it's pretty much straight forward...
Unfortunately it's not as simple as thought - since the Android OS has to communicate correctly with all the hardware in the phone the device drivers and configurations are the main problem when trying to provide new OS versions such as 2.1 or 2.2...
The bootimage is only suitable if you want root priviledges on your phone all the time, but here it is (I assume you know what has to be done with it, if not: read the how tos...they are excellent...)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5792750&postcount=38
OK folks, I bought a device from China to test a theory. I want music/videos/tinterweb etc in every room in my house. The plan was to have a docking station with speakers attached in every room. Then 4-5 tablets that I could plug in when I went into that room. So, if I'm in the shower, I can play death metal whilst my girlfriend watches Sex in the City in bed. That was the plan!
I got the Android tablet today and to say I'm not impressed is an understatement. The device is an unbranded tablet labelled as Mid & E-book. It's running Android 1.6.
My problem is this. Firstly I want to stream music and video from my network. It seems that all the Android apps I can find don't stream! They download to the device (with a 2gb memory this isn't practical). If there is an app that will stream properly, then great. Secondly, I want to be able to connect to my network at home. I have found an app called ES File Explorer that will connect, but I'd like to be able to login to my domain as I do with my laptop.
Maybe it's because I'm not used to it yet, but Android doesn't seem to be as good as Windows Mobile. It's quite clunky and the apps seem to crash like Windows CE!!
So, my questions are these:
If I stick with Android, can I get a media player that will stream music from the network?
Can I get an app that will let me log on to the network properly?
Can I upgrade the OS to a newer version of Android?
If I don't stick with Android, can I install Windows Mobile on this tablet?
If the company that created the table releases an upgrade then definitely you can upgrade it. I'm not so certain as Manuel updates for that particular device.
and I'm more than certain that it is not possible to install windows mobile onto your device.
as for the first two questions, apps like that may appear but have not recently.. :/
Hmmm. I thought Android was supposed to be the better version of the iPhone OS since they're both linux based. I was under the impression that there were thousands of apps to do everything. It seems that there are fewer apps than there are on Win Mobile and the ones that are available aren't as good as the the Win Mobile ones.
I hadn't even thought to check out the ability to stream music/video. Windows Media Player does this, as does every other music player on Windows. It seems ridiculous that this isn't an available for Android.
Anyone fancy writing a couple of apps?

You bought a unbranded no-name device from China, at a very cheap price I'm guessing. What did you expect? You could have looked up if there were any apps that would do as you desire before you bought the device. I'm not sure what you mean with connecting to your network? As in a wifi connection? Does the device have a wifi adapter? The clunkiness is probably because of low level hardware specs, as you'd expect from a cheap product (assuming it's cheap now). The apps crashing is probably because the manufacturer did a quick and dirty android install.

I hadn't thought it would be necessary. Android is a standard operating system. I don't check to see if a media player on Windows actually plays media files. It's taken as read. With the marketplace as competitive as it is, basic media player capabilities are the minimum I would expect from a device.

On my HTC TP2 I can connect to my domain as I can on my laptop. This is the kind of app I was looking for. Again, as WM6 is considered to be the 3rd OS (behind iPhone and Android) and it can do this kind of thing, I would have thought that Android would do it too. Maybe not as a part of the OS, but since "there's an app for everything" I would have expected there to be an app for it.

This is why I thought I could upgrade the OS. To my mind this is no different to my laptop. If I want to run Windows XP or Windows 7, I simply upgrade. Why would this tablet be different? I know it runs on solid state memory, but so does my phone. Low level specs shouldn't be an issue either. Wifi and media players have been around long enough now for the components to be cheap. The components in HTC phones are no different and they work just fine.
The fact that the tablet was cheap shouldn't enter into it. I need it to do one simply task. I'm not looking for a tablet that I can use as my primary machine. I need a simple device for a simple task.

theres a massive difference between your laptop and a tablet running android. i mean its completely different windows the operating system will install onto your laptop and grab all the necessary drivers(unlike vista). android is nothing like this, with android you first have to work out how to get to the boot menu. unlike windows its not going to come up and say would you like to boot from cd? they will try and hide the boot menu to stop you the consumer messing up the device and claiming for a new one on the warranty. and when you've got there you then have to try and find how to install the packages. often with the new device you first of all have to load on a new boot menu, because the manufacturer has locked the first one only to flash encrypted files.

look sorry dude but buying a cheap device means a hell of alot of trouble adimtadly the "specs" are the same as an entry level htc phone, but the hardware is not the phones will come with decent porcessors and, these things come with cheap processors. If you want to get a decent "hardware" tablet get a apad irobot with the rockchip processor, it gets the best reviews.
look sorry if i sound a bit rude through out this but please have a read around and you will find, android isn't just a simple insert the cd upgrade process. if your wanting something that hasn't been released by the manafacturer yet, you are gonna have to rely on this community to help you get what you want. and trust me saying all this s*** is simple isn't going to get you much help. i started a thread a while ago about this exact device. GO AND READ IT, it contains info about how to re-flash a much better rom from my understanding, i don't own the device. of course if you would have search you would have found my thread.

the market place on this device isn't android market place it is a c****y alternative with no where near the amount of apps on the official one, it would be better for you to browse the web and try to find the plain APK files

Really?? That's outrageous. It says it's the Android marketplace. I assumed that as the majority of apps were chinese, it was just a case that I needed to change the locale somehow. I hadn't looked properly as the wifi failed over the weekend. I've tried it this morning at work and it can't connect to the wifi here either so it's going back anyway now.

theres a massive difference between your laptop and a tablet running android. i mean its completely different windows the operating system will install onto your laptop and grab all the necessary drivers(unlike vista). android is nothing like this, with android you first have to work out how to get to the boot menu. unlike windows its not going to come up and say would you like to boot from cd? they will try and hide the boot menu to stop you the consumer messing up the device and claiming for a new one on the warranty. and when you've got there you then have to try and find how to install the packages. often with the new device you first of all have to load on a new boot menu, because the manufacturer has locked the first one only to flash encrypted files.

I understand that manufacturers of handhelds (tablets and phones) don't make it easy to change the OS. Quite why is beyond me, but there you go. That said though, the guys on this forum are usually brilliant in being able to cook up upgraded ROMs for every device almost as soon as it's released. I don't profess to know how they do it, I'm just grateful that they do.

I've looked at the reviews of the apad and it seems fine. I suspect I'll get one to replace this one when it goes back. What exactly is the difference between the rockchip processor and the other one? The price of the different devices indicates that the rockchip is better (as everyone says), but why? Is it just a bit faster?

I wasn't trying to say "this is easy, anyone can do it". Far from it. I work in software development and understand the complexities that go into developing apps. I also understand that developing an OS of whatever degree is ten times harder. The point I was trying to make is that Android is now an accepted mainstream OS. Most people will have little understanding of what goes into developing an app. The majority won't even care. But becuase it's a mainstream OS, the majority (including me) would expect the same functionality as provided by another OS. Maybe not out of the box, but I would have thought that someone, somewhere, (not necessarily here) would have gone to the trouble of developing a media player that will stream from the source location, and a domain login app. Android is becoming more prevalent in the corporate environment and so you would have expected somebody (or some company) to have developed such apps. People will pay for quality apps (me included). I'm sorry if you felt that I was slagging off this board. I wasn't. I was simply asking the questions (surely the point of this board?)

I did a search again today (as I did before posting the original message) but still can't find your thread about re-flashing this device. If you could point me in the direction of it, I would be grateful. Chances are I won't be flashing it now (since it's going back), but useful to read.

iOS and Android are "smartphone" Operating Systems, Windows Mobile is a Pocket PC Operating System
That's why you're able to do almost anything and hack to your heart's content in Winmo but the other OSs seem so lacking.
WinMo is not for everyone, mostly because most people are ignorant to what it is truly capable of doing, they just want a phone that runs apps, thats thats why they flock to iOS and Android...Which in turn means less and less people using Winmo thus less support for it since phone companies are a business and they care about their bottom lines, more people in adroind = more money.
I love windows mobile and wish a HD2-like device would be available for CDMA

Forgive my ignorance then, but what's the difference between a smartphone and a pocket pc os?
Since my primary use for this device is to stream media from my network, and it seems finding a media player that can do this on Android is going to be difficult to say the least, can I upgrade the apad iRobot M to run Win Mobile? I have just brought one on AliExpress.

you will not be able to install winmo to an android tablet, its kinda like trying to install mac onto an AMD machine.
There are tablets like the one you purchased that run WinMo if your interested.
why on earth would you want a non windows device to log onto a windows domain?
The only valid reason I can come up with is to acces your shares or printers on the domain. You can't apply machine and or userpolicies like you would to windows clients.
I work in a large company with +/- 9000 clients and +/- 800 servers as a sysadmin and I never understood why some people use dc @home
but to answer that question, you can logon to a windows domain with a linux client using a samba client ed. But you might have to compile them for arm against the kernel version running on your device. Don't know whether there are packages available for android out of the box. But for your needs (especially) the domain logon, I would go for a windows based tablet.
This happened before. Someone bought a knock-off Android. They all worked together and got it rooted. it was beautiful-er then this girl I'm liking right now.
