I have to admit that I am overwelmed with all of the info regarding the xv6800. I just got mine this past Friday. I have not activated it yet although I did have Verizon transfer my contacts from my Moto E815. I am holding off activating until I learn more about the phone.
The feature that attracted me the most about the phone was the WiFi capabilities. I do not plan on getting the data plan. I do not know how to find out if the phone has Win Mobile 6.1. I would like to have it serve as a GPS.
Some questions:
If I am at Win 6.0 should I upgrade?
Is anyone aware of ant tutorials on using the phone and O/S ?
Is there a way to activate GPS by basically down / uploading a program and clicking on it?
What applications would be best? I plan on surfing, web-mailing, listening to music, working with the office applications.
Is there any "must have" hardware I should get?
Thanks and I appologize it my questions seem very basic but as I said, I am overwhelmed.
Nelson
1 not until you understand what the phone has to offer stick with 6.0
2 not me
3 yes but phone must be unlocked gpstoday and baf gps toggle are the best for me
4 surfing=skyfire music=s2p
5 screen protector
A
didnt it come with an interactive cd with a tutorial? mine did :S
if you are interested in musicand watching video you should definitly get the slunkworks flash bundle and tcpmp media player so you can goto you tube and watch streaming videos the way it should be done on mobile
i have uploaded the files for you if you are interested...install tcpmp first then the flash bundle,,if you need assistance let me know or search for "cab instyallation"
last about your GPS there has been people saying they have gotten it to work through google maps but it requires rom flashing first...but like GeLoPeZ said get to know your stock rom first...maybe youll like it
flaws
the fone does have a few flaws tho...the youchscreen is pointless wen it comes to small icons or scrolling...unless u want to get out your stylus everytime
it can be slow at times but nothing a little registry edit cant help out with a little...
almost everything has to be manually shut off or closed through running programs screen likr data connection etc,,,unless you get a few programs that can stop that hassel
the touch keyboard isnt worth anything its awful...unless, like i said you want to keep getting out your stylus
cant customize text message ringtones with custom ringtones
in all...most all these things can be fixed thgrough rom flashing or free downloadable apps and cabs i give it an 8 out of 10
hope i was helpful

FTouchSL fixes that issue. There's a free version somewhere on this forum, but for a little over 10 bucks (USD), it's worth it to get the commercial (kinetic scrolling!).

You can.... Start > Settings > Sounds and Notifications
From the "Event" menu, select "Messaging: New Text Message" and select the tone you want.
I think the OP was saying that you cant "Assign" a specific "tone" to a user. Just a tone for all incoming texts.
I might be off base......but I don't think so.
this is to enhance your phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2526683 try it

Yes you should. There is really no reason not to. Just remember that flashing the new ROM will delete all of your data, so back it up first.
6.1 is useful for a variety of reasons:
1. You can solve your GPS problem by doing it (see below)
2. It has a task manager built in
3. It has Remote Access built in (so if you need to connect with your work desktop, it's nice to have it....you can go and load RA anyways with 6.0, but it doesn't come with it)
4. Has some better screens for managing connections (IMO).

Not only is there a CD that came with your phone, but there is a Getting Started application in the Pgorams folder of your phone. Did you buy this phone second hand?

Why yes there is! Only recently some amazing devs on this forum (skywing) devised an amazingly simple process for activating internal GPS. I just did it last night and it took literally 3 minutes to do and I now have Live Search, Google Maps, Amaze, and two other GPS based apps running on it.
Refer to this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=424387
There are a lot of posts in that forum, but the upshot is either do the very simple manual install mentioned in the first post (I did it, I am no expert, took me 3 minutes) or go to near the end and look for the URL of the wiki that has the latest one click cab files to install.

I use Skyfire to browse the web. It is comparable to the iphone browser and it works great. It is in beta, but so far I have only encoutnered a few websites that freak out on it (e.g. www.projectgutenberg.org).
For music, I like pocketmusic 5.1, a freeware app from Pocketmind. It only does mp3 files 9the shareware version does all file types) but it has a great touch friendly skin and nicely shuts off the phone but still plays music to save battery power. It works with my bluetooth headphones seemlessly. Only issue is that while active it commandeers your hard buttons, so if you want to use the hard buttons on the phone for other than music control you have to quit the app.
Other nice apps (I won't list them all!):
1. Total Commander in place of File Explorer. Allows you to have two windows open and drag and drop files.
2. Vade Mecum is a plucker reader that I use to read ebooks on my phone.
3. Live Search and Google Maps are an absolute must.
4. I like Icontact (Burt's version) which you can find on these forums. It is a finger friendly contact program that works wonderfully.
5. I dig Youtube player. You don't need it with Skyfire, but I like it for playing files I download off of youtube. It will search youtube and play video directly or download it in .flv format for later playing. Useful to save the clips I watch a lot (Monty Python sketches, Weird Al videos, etc.) on my phone.
Those are the biggies, IMO.

Devin

Hello,
As i will be getting my Exec (hopefully) tomorrow, i thought this topic would not only help me greatly but also others.
What are the first ten things to do when you get your new exec?
e.g
1) Get a case
2) Install Software (name here) to use it as a TV remote
Thanks folks
Since this is going to be different from person to person, why not just check this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=31697
It covers most/all questions...
Here's what I did:
1). Get case - recommend Proporta Alu-Leather
2). Get screen protector - recommend Martin
3). Get GPS System - recommend BT-338
4). Get Car Mount - recommend Brodit/Proclip
5). Get SD Card - recommend 2-4GB
6). Get system tools software - recommend free software
7). Learn to tweak it - recommend XDA Devs - you guys rock!
8). Get desk charger
9). Get Bluetooth Headset - no recommendations
10). Kick yourself in the ass for spending so much on yourself and nobody else.
There you go. Hope that helps.

I think it's going to be for my husband: "Kick himself in the ass for spending so much on his lovely wife.."
For me, the top ten would be:
1) Get Screen Protector
2) Get Case (im using the soft leather case for the ordinary dictionary/translator... it's the same size, fits perfectly)
3) Get BT headset -- using jabra but i want the one with the lcd display
4) Pair BT with phone - Total Voice Commander
5) Install TCMPM and load your sd with movies
6) Personalize phone - change wallpaper.... Im using a hello kitty wallpaper-- got a right to be cheezy... Makes my dopod less intimidating.. Anyone who opens it says, "how cute..."
7) Load ringtones and Install PocketZenPhone
8) Sync phone with pc (i think this should be #3)
9) Install MSReader and load phone with ebooks
10) Show off discreetly to close friends... I dont want just anybody touching my phone with his grimy hands...
screen protector definitely.
A couple of mundane settings to change:
disable error reporting and
disable receive all incoming beams.
Get your activesync working to get your PIM data loaded.
Definitely consider a bluetooth headset (I use Sony Erickson HBH 662 and I'm happy with it).
Definitely helps to have some program to close programs instead of just minimize them (I use smallmenu).
Get your internet connection working.
Start tweaking, probably best to start with the appropriate section of the universal wiki.
Follow this forum and learn more and more.
Enjoy!!

And it's utterly fantastic. a gazillion times better than WMP. Streaming movies over a wifi network without any silly pre-compression/reduction is fantastic.
Big Ups for TCPMP
And the most important thing for me on TCPMP is FULL screen!

On that point - why should we beg/borrow/steal/buy what we need to get a decentOS?
MS is getting lazy - THIS version of Windows Mobile should have come with WMP at least as comparable feature and performance wise as TCPMP. Also a decent task switcher and window closer, like GSPocketMagic, an RSS Reader like Egress, File Explorer like Resco, Pic viewer like Resco, Radio Streamer like Resco, decent Registry Editor, GPRS Monitor type program and so on...
I guess the good side of it is that other programmers are getting income from creating great apps.. apps which are better than MS' creation. It's healthy competition and in the end, we, the consumers, are enjoying the fruits of their labor
Merry Christmas!
Just a short follow up question.
The TCP media player seams to work great on AVI files created with the divx plug in, however, mpeg files play rather badly.
They hang every couple of seconds, jitters and jump.
However, they play nicely with win media player.
Are you others getting this?
Thanks,
Frode
When MS adds something and does something too well, they get sued for Anti-Trust, if they don't, they get complaint at, lose-lose.
MS have been known to put in some really basic software so 3rd party software developers can earn on the full version or better versions of the software.
so can't really blame them.
frodebass, try Pocket TV for playing MPEG. TCMP is really good for DivX, but why use MPEG when it's a space hog?
The first few things I would do are:
1. Don't charge the battery. Use it until its at 20% and then do a fully charge for 8 hours
2. Check for dead pixels on the screen
3. Take a few photos to make sure there are no dead pixels in the camera
4. Don't install a new ROM unless you need to. And if do want to make sure you hard reset before a ROM update
5. Don't install non-WM5 s/w at all. And if you want to install any third-party apps check here at the forum and always use the latest version. In general avoid apps that have Today screen plug-ins as they seem to the source of many problems from what I can gather
6. Show off your new "toy" to your friends/work colleagues!
There seems to be a ton of posters here who know a lot about the Mogul and phones/PDAs in general...so I figured I'd pose the question to you all.
I'd love suggestions for what I should download...so if possible, could you respond with answers to the following questions:
1) What program?
2) What does it do? Please state the purpose/usefulness.
3) How do I download and install it? Link to find the download?
4) What, if any, existing program will be unnecessary once I download it? And can that unnecessary program be deleted?
I've never had a PDA, so any and all suggestions are welcome. I'll be using the PDA predominantly for calls, web-surfing, and messaging.
Also keep in mind that I'm new to all of this, and I'm a complete moron...I don't understand a damned thing. So talk to me like I'm a 5-year-old. I don't know abbreviations like SMS or MMS, or whatever.
Thanks in advance, I appreciate you taking time out to help me.
Well one of the programs I use the most on my phone is The Core Media Player (TCPMP) it is by far the best media player for Pocket PC's and can play most file types. you can get more information from here, and if you want to download it just respond saying yes and ill post a link. Don't download it from the site as I have a newer version than on that site.

i hate to be the one to say it, but after seeing the views on this go up and no replies i'm just going to say what everyones been thinking. look around? theres hundreds of threads with stuff to download for your phone, you just have to look a little
Most of our WM devices are very similar. As such, pretty much everything that's been said before still applies, so check the wiki, where you should find many articles related to this conundrum.

And to you other two, I understand that...like I said, though, I'm a beginner and a lot of stuff goes over my head. So I figured I'd create a thread and can ask questions and whatnot.
It's fine if people don't want to respond, though. Life will go on. And some people have been nice enough to take time to explain stuff to me, so it's ok.

Have you got .8?
I've heard rumors of its existance, but can't find it yet. Still running 0.72... If that's the newer version that you've got, would you mind sharing it?
Here it is v.81, sorry it wouldn't let me upload to the site like normal so i put it on megaupload, to install it just download the file and copy it to your memory card or phone memory, then open it with file explorer on your phone and install it to either the device or memory card. Then open it from start/programs/media player

Sprite Backup
Sprite Backup is a must! Even if you keep it connected to your ActivSync PC daily, it is good to have a baseline you can always restore to, and I'd suggest having it backup to your SD card, and rename one of them every few weeks so you have something to restore from in case it gets completely fragg'd.
Another one is Skyfire (Beta) mobile internet browser.
I'd also suggest you get Microsoft Reader or EReader so you can have pocket novels on your phone (it's a nice thing to have when you're waiting for something). Also, rip your DVD's to your PC and encode them to WMV format and your ActivSync can put them on your SD card...
All of these tricks are discussed here in the forum. Hope this helps.
I will just give titles of some of the apps that I use. Google them to find where and what they do.
PIM: PocketInformant
Wallet: CodeWalletPro 6
Geocaching: GeoScout
maps: Google Maps, Live Search
Bible: Bible Reader
Today Plugin: HHC Home Customizer (will download HTC home plugin)
Shell: SBP Mobile Shell v.2
Browser: Opera Mini
Regedit: PHM RegEdit
File: Resco File Explorer
Video: TCPMP
Navigation: TomTom7
There are a bunch of other little apps that just make life easy, go to Handango.com and find what you need your phone to do for you.
Hey all,
Im new to this site and this phone... after all the youtube vids and the websites im very eager to start customizing my mogul.... but there are a bajillion versions of everything, i dont know where to start... can anyone suggest or attach the newest versions of the iphone interface, the touchflo htc home app? Looking forward to contributing to the community as i learn more! thanks
Joel
Welcome to the site. I don't have all direct links but I included a few and if you do a search you can find all the following programs which i think are pretty sweet to have on the mogul.
Do a search on xda for the following:
Htc Task Manager - a program that closes applications when you click on the the x close button instead of just minimizing them, helps save ram and keep your mogul running smooth.
FlashVideoBundle Pack - codecs that let you watch streaming content like youtube
TCPMP - a good flexible Media Player that lets you watch things like youtube and other formats not supported by WMP (needs a flash bundle pack to watch youtube and other streaming media)
PPCgeeksMMS - lets you send picture mail and video mail
Google Maps - Awesome map program that lets you find nearby businesses, restaurants, etc. also has mapquest like driving directions function
HTC home customizer - Downloads the htc home plugin (very cool) onto your device and lets you customize it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319308
PPC Pim backup - lets you backup contacts, messaging, and just about anything else on your device onto your SD card. good to have if you plan on customizing your phone and it ends up crashing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705
efrosts FTouchFlo - theres a couple different versions of Touchflo floating around but I find this one works well on the mogul. and also FTouchFlo customizer for an app that makes it extremely easy to configure TouchFlo
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=338143
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=345568
SCLPF - Slithers Cube Launcher - gives you the Touch Cube
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=336234
Everything so far is free, the next couple do cost money but they are well worth it. And of course come with trial versions if you're on the fence so check em out:
As far as iphone themes go, i'd definitely recommend checking out lakeridgesoftware.com where you'll find the program wisbar advance 3 and wisbar advance desktop. In my opinion they are the best programs available right now to modify your phones interface. Once you have these two programs you'll have access to about a million different themes and you can even make your own. Highly customizable.
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/ Spb Software House has a ton of great software worth checking out. Some are moderately expensive but they make some great programs.
if you run into any problems let us know, we've all had our share of problems and crashes, good luck with your new mogul

Great response Johnnycross22.. I'd also add Pocket CM, TotalCommander, and Meshavi Notes Explorer to that list.

Of course this is just my opinon, but Tregrad has the right idea. Perfect example: A_C's "Slide2unlock" (great looking app worth picking up)so many people would ask the exact same question without taking the time to actually read the thread, it got ridiculous!
If you plan on making any kind of modification on anything that costs over 100 bucks it's worth doing all the independant study you can to hedge the odds of you bricking your device. right?
With that said... You do have the option of foregoing the flashbundle and tcmp by downloading Vtap. It's a great free application that is a vast collection of youtube, googlevideo etc. It is somewhat of a mem hog but I find it better than tcmp. Again just my opinon.
Grumps has a great iPhone gui thats really easy to get started with and a config app to go with it. its very simple as long as you pay attention and read the instructions. Hope this helps...
Thanks for posting all that info.
I was looking to do similar things with my Mogul once it arrives. Now I don't have to track everything down.
This website is awesome! It made me like my phone again, I was going to get the touch, but not anymore, since I can get all the features of the touch on my mogul and still keep my slide out keyboard!!
HI even though i'm new to the forums as in making a profile, im not new to this awesome site!
I'll start off by saying that, im very computer litterate, and that the Cingular HTC 8125 is the first smartphone ive ever bought, so please take alittle pity on me as im coming from one of the dumbest basic kyocera phone's, to a phone thats still in the top spots of all smartphones
1) I slid a sim-card that I bought off of ebay(t-mobile) into the sim slot of wizard, and pressed the power button. When coming on it almost goes to the start(today) screen, but skips right to this white screen asking for sim unlock code, and I thought that maybe the numbers on the sim cards CARD would unlock it but no sucess. So ofcourse i came here, seeing on the front page of a program called LOCKIWIZ?
-Could you explain how to do this, as in setting up then executeing, in the most simple as you can get it, not be rude, but me just having this phone for a day, i dont know what things like HKey/System/tools...whatever means yet

3) Could this ActiveSync program possible fix these problems, or other necessities?
4) Since I knew that I was getting this for christmas, I went, and got prepared to use this phone to its potential. So I went found lots of freeware apps.
Total Commander
Calculator98
Arithmetic
VBirthday
Taskmanager
The Core Pack Media Player
Pocket Encarta
Magic Button
MyMoney
XnView player-camera
Winrar
And 2 strategy games; Warring states, and crimson fields
- all of these apps/games, are already on a disk
Will all of these programs fit on a 1gb Mini SD Card?
Will the zip program, I saw in the phones menu help compress?
Which of these programs do you recommend I keep, and/or get rid of?
If any what the better equivalents of some of these programs?
BTW, what's the most simplistic way as to getting these program on to the phone through activesync or will their be instructions/tutorials to guide you?
5) Are we charger for Wi-FI Internet?
In case needed:
ROM: 2.25.11.1 WWE
OS 5.1.195
Sorry for the really long list of questions, but im sure that this thread will many others. And if theirs any of those 4-5 star "Stickys" that I missed sorry, cause I saw that their were about 250 pages!
Thank You!

Well thanks again

Hi all.
So, yeah, I'm new here...been lurking around the last several days, reading and reading, and reading some more, trying to make sense of a few things, before making a post that would end up getting a lot of replies of "RTF FAQ", or "Search", etc...
I've recently inherited a T-Mobile Wing (and 2Gig microSD) from my better half, who just couldn't stand the device, and went back to her old Motorola V3. Admittedly, I wasn't all that impressed with it either, so naturally my first thought is "Well, before I just file it away to collect dust, can I make it better?"
And so, I found my way here.
Now, like I said, I've been reading and playing around with stuff for a few days, so this post isn't so much a "How Do I Do This?" post, but more of a "What Do I Pick To Do This?"
Like a lot of people, I want my Windows Mobile install to be much like my home PC install: as clean and barebones as possible, while still doing the things it needs and the things I want...
Right now, I'm guessing that I need to go with one of the itje Touch-IT roms, but still not quite sure exactly which one... Heh.
I'm hoping I can just throw out an idea of what I want my phone to do, and perhaps a few of you can make your recommendations as to what exactly I need...
STANDARD PHONE FEATURES: Obviously, the regular phone should work like it's supposed to, including text messaging. All forms of Instant Messaging (Yahoo, Windows Live, etc) should be entirely unnecessary, but maybe as an optional addon cab...
CONNECTIVITY FEATURES: Aside from the regular phone (duh)...Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPRS, and ActiveSync should be all that is necessary. If storage memory/active memory can be saved by removing any unnecessary drivers or software for the unused connection types, then I'd like to do so.
INTERNET RELATED FEATURES: I would like as much browsing capacity on this thing as I can get, within reason. Is there a better browser for this phone, or am I stuck with IE? Essentially, I want Google Maps on this thing (in lieu of TomTom, I suppose...lol), and maybe the ability to cruise YouTube... Probably also Gmail (Outlook or other "regular" email programs are probably unecessary, unless they can do the job better...meaning faster and probably less memory consumption).
MULTIMEDIA FEATURES: Yes, I still want it to play MP3s and videos and such. Radio would be a nice touch, but optional.
MISC PRODUCTIVITY FEATURES: Yes I still want the standard stuff (calculator, calendar, scheduler, etc), but at the moment, I have no need for things like Office. And no pre-installed games.
CAMERA FEATURES: For the sake of utilizing the hardware, yes, I'd like to have normal camera and video operation...but still have the option to remove it if I had to.
MISC STUFF:
Weather: I would like to be able to tap one button on my Today screen and get the Current weather info ONLY. Maybe with the option of bringing up a new screen with future forcasts.
MyFaves: I would like to be able to tap one button on my Today screen and have it show or hide my MyFaves.
Slide2Unlock: Yes, I want it. Loving anything that reminds me of that shiny iPhone. lol
PLANNING TO USE:
I'm already definitely planning to install and use PocketCBZ (comic book reader), and a couple old console emulators (SNES, GBA), in case anyone needed to consider memory usage with those in mind.
I may or may not want some kind of PDF reader on there also...haven't formally decided yet.
...
Okay. I can't immediately think of anything else right now, too tired...
Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction...because right now I'm getting pretty lost trying to decide exactly which mods I need, and which I don't... :-/
Oh, and semi-random: What exactly is the Cube? Obviously it's optional on some roms, and standard on others...but really, what the heck is it, and should I want it? Or even care?

Right now, I'm guessing that I need to go with one of the itje Touch-IT roms, but still not quite sure exactly which one... Heh.
ITJE's Touch-IT roms are great... as well as ASERG's rom. I would reccommend them both.
I'm hoping I can just throw out an idea of what I want my phone to do, and perhaps a few of you can make your recommendations as to what exactly I need...
STANDARD PHONE FEATURES: Obviously, the regular phone should work like it's supposed to, including text messaging. All forms of Instant Messaging (Yahoo, Windows Live, etc) should be entirely unnecessary, but maybe as an optional addon cab...
you can go to Palringo.com and install their instant messaging client which supports all the major ones... it requires a data connection.
CONNECTIVITY FEATURES: Aside from the regular phone (duh)...Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPRS, and ActiveSync should be all that is necessary. If storage memory/active memory can be saved by removing any unnecessary drivers or software for the unused connection types, then I'd like to do so.
you will have bluetooth, wifi, gprs, activesync with both roms without any problems.

Opera Mobile and Opera Mini are the best options out there.
Gmail has a java application you can install from their site which will function similiar to the gmail site.
You can also setup your Gmail account to work through POP or IMAP through the Pocket Outlook.
You can install google maps from the google site as well.
MULTIMEDIA FEATURES: Yes, I still want it to play MP3s and videos and such. Radio would be a nice touch, but optional.
HTC Audio manager functions similiar to an IPOD ... you can also use TCMP , Coreplayer, and any other media players.
There's no FM radio, but with a data connection, you can have access to internet radio, xm or sirius.
MISC PRODUCTIVITY FEATURES: Yes I still want the standard stuff (calculator, calendar, scheduler, etc), but at the moment, I have no need for things like Office. And no pre-installed games.
calculator, calendar come installed basic.... office comes on most roms... but most chefs offer "lite" versions of their roms.
CAMERA FEATURES: For the sake of utilizing the hardware, yes, I'd like to have normal camera and video operation...but still have the option to remove it if I had to.
Comes included.

there are various weather programs out there, including the weather function that comes in HTC HOME plugin which most chefs include in their roms. Personally, I use SPB weather.
None of the Roms include myfaves, but I made a cab for installing myfaves that's available on this forum if you search for it.
You can use Ultimate Launcher or SPB mobile shell 2 to flip through today plugins. Search for that and see an example of it.
You can install S2U2, just search for it.

Some Roms include adobe pdf.
There are plenty of emulators available ... you can find them all over the place. You can install them onto the memory card, and shouldn't have any problems.
I have never heard of PocketCBZ

The cube is simply an interface, you can flip with your thumb.
