[Q] Defy bricked or dead..? - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I instaled the CM9 to my Motorola defy and the mod did not started after reboot( I did the factory reset and cache reset ), was waiting for like 30mins and only the Google sign was showing up.. with low light on phone.
I removed my battery and tried to access the recovery(power and - button), no luck in there too also the Google sigh was up but with bit lighter then the simple google sigh..
Went to forums looked for ''bricked defy'' seen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076735 thread but also dead end, the RDS LITE did not find my phone via USB.
Turned on the bootloader(power and + button) and nothing in there too. my windows dont feel like find the phone.
Help with some tips, please

Start up rsdlite....
plug defy into usb (w/o the battery in ph)...
hold buttons to boot into boot loader (power + volume [up/down] can't remember @ mo)
with the other hand insert your battery - 'if' your ph goes into boot loader mode flash your stock rom, [charge ph] & restore any nandroid that you had made

do you install the motorola drivers? In order to make rsd able to find your phone you should install them.
do you wipe dalvin cache ? do you see the blue led when start your defy?
have you flashed the right kernnel?

You post is too large(in terms of fonts) to read...it hurt my eyes!!
anyways, about the issue, I guess your phone's battery in not charged. Please make sure to charge the battery using the charger and once it done then boot your phone and when you see blue LED blinking press both volume keys together... this will make your phone to boot into boot menu....now do a data/cache wipe and reboot....
However, if this does not helps then you will be required to flash with the SBF. refer to Defy Developement section - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537.
Hope this helps!!

I'm sure you are are able to boot into the boot loader.
Follow below mentioned steps:
To Flash full SBFs, here is the standard procedure:
1. Open RSD Lite: Click on [ … ] Button and select your .SBF (Remember to rename to a short name and put it on root of your PC) and click Open.
2. Boot your phone into Bootloader Mode (check last section if you don’t know how to do it).
3. Now connect your Defy to your PC
4. The START button on RSD Lite should be available now, click and wait.

Thanks for the compliment lol
my dear friend...i don't know what to say..ur really trying to help me and i want to thank u for all ur efforts..but the RSD isn't able to detect my phone..i have used it b4 and i know how it works..but when i connect the phone to the pc nothing happens..not even a voice notification that a device has been connected..therefore the RSD isn't able to start to fix the phone..i've tried holding the vol up + power but nothing..also both vol +power also nothing..just as soon as i connect the device to the pc or the charger it instantly shows the Google logo and thats it! nothing else happens
Same issue, can't use RSD if you can't first get to the bootloader. Read a thread about using a stripped USB cable to hotwire the battery to get power to flash with RSD, but can't figure out how to link in mobile app.

Press both volume buttons on the screen with the android and exclamation mark. That'll take you to stock recovery where you need to wipe data and factory reset.
If you have to flash the sbf again, try using sbf_flash on Linux. It'll flash in times where RSD won't recognize your phone.
Linux Live\sbf_flash tut
sbf_flash binary is in attachments
Only use Defy 2nd-init for recovery
(and once its installed, steal /system/bootmenu/* and /system/bin/bootmenu from Defy CM9 from June 5th on up -- touch bootmenu is pretty awesome; replacing the bootmenu isn’t for the feint of heart.)
the only problem is i dont have linux i have windows 7
Use rsdlite sri I don't have a link on me

I dual boot between the two
If you have a blank cd and a usb drive\sdcard you can just use a Linux Live environment -- you never install Linux at all -- and you can use sbf_flash from there.
RSD Lite version that works and tutorial
And since it hasn't been mentioned yet, holding volume up + power on boot access the boot recovery to flash sbf's. Just make sure you have at least 50% battery before flashing or you might get an actual brick.
What your dealing with is nothing more than a recovery screw up. I had the same problem last night installing touch recovery -- it wiped /bootmenu/ instead of installing to it. Solution is to flash sbf, reboot, wipe data/factory reset from stock recovery, reboot, eebluroffee at first screen, root, enable non market apps, Defy 2nd init flash something that's better than stock.
ok i install the motorola usb drivers and start up rsd lite but it does not regocogize my phone
yes i have it in bootloader mode
Did you install everything before plugging phone in?
Try uninstalling everything motorola related and reinstalling just the drivers....On a previous Win7 install nothing was recognized, but on a reinstall of the entire system it worked fine and still does. I still recommend the Linux way over RSD because it will flash your phone regardless, provided you can access the loader.
I still haven't gotten native tethering to work with Windows, but then again, I quit trying sometime around December or January.

This is for all those people who are having trouble flashing with RSDlite in Vista & WIndows 7.
If I am right, RSD lite does not seem to recognize the sbf file after you select it and instead the "start" button remains grayed out.
If that's the case, here the solution:
I had a similar problem and sucessfully used the command line parameters for RSDlite to force a flash. I managed to get a signed/unsigned firmware installed.
You need to copy the firmware you want to flash into the RSDlite directory in your program files folder.
Make sure you are in bootloader mode first.
Then, open command prompt and "cd" to the RSDlite directory
eg:
> cd C:\
> cd Program Files
> cd motorola
> cd RSDlite
>
now for the flashing type:
> SDL.exe -f xxxx.sbf -t 2
where xxxx.sbf is the firmware you are flashing to the phone.
flashing will begin shortly afterwards.
It worked for me, but in the end, show FAIL STATUS.

hard bricked my phone
hello. i'm looking for any help to this issue: i believe i hard bricked my bravo somehow. it was running one of the first MIUI rom for two or more years. but became slow and laggy thru last months. and the other day it just freezed while i was browsing the call log. no reaction to the pover button at all, had to take out the battery. now it gives no reaction to any combination of button presses ( power; vol up + power ; vol down + power), the only signal what see is white LED light when į connect the phone to the PC. When phone is connected to the pc freshly, and when i press Vol down + Power, Windows 7 releases "clink" sound and device manager tries to show that "Motorola USB Device" is connected, but quickly disapears with another Windows sound. RDS lite 5,0 doesnt recognize phone too.
Is there any chance to bring this phone alive? any advise will be appreciated.
p.s. english isn't my native. sorry for the mistakes

Not sure if this will help since I did not watch the video myself, but a quick Google search gave me a video describing how to take a Motorola USB cable and modify it to unbrick a phone. I did not watch the video yet so I don't know how relevant it is to your problem. But just by looking at the video preview it looks like the difficulty level may be pretty high... Here is the link:

SOLVED : Managed the impossible - Bricked my Defy+ - PLEASE help !

Here are the facts:
1. My defy+ with red lens had this rom :Android 2.3.5 "Gingerbread" DEFY+ 4.5.1-134-DFP-125 - CEE LINK
2. took the stupid decision to flash this A.2.3.6-MIUI-XIUIv4.04-13.06-DEFY+/red-fixed'sbf from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1691901
3. the phone did not boot, remained at the black screen with the white writings on it so i decided to flash the image that i had (read point 1)
4. flash went relatively ok but now my phone is stuck at the animated motorola boot logo
5. if i take the battery out and power it on with the volume down i encounter a triangle with a "!" in the middle next to an green android - the 3e menu is missing - can't do a thing
if i power the phone with volume up the bootloader says "Bootloader 09.10, Battery OK, OK to program, Connect USB, Data Cable"
6. tried the following with no luck:
- let it run the animated boot loop for 10-12 minutes - hoping that will come out of it
- flashed it several times
- tried this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1618718 and it's exactly how it;s acting mine and i quote: "If that doesn't happen,it will ask you to reboot manaully and your phone will be stuck in MOTO logo.
- Now remove your USB cable and remove battery. Hold power button and vol + button, you will get that screen.
- Now connect usb, now it result should say pass.
- Press the power button and start the phone. First boot will take some time (Min of 10 minutes or more). "
I am tired, upset and kinda desperate... i thought it will never brick and... surprise
yo did not break your phone... that's almost impossible...
did you tried to flash a defy+ sbf from here http://sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_jordanplus/list.php using rsd lite???
try that first and later came back with results
dude, this is the wrong area but as you are desperate.... did you try to find some post
that could help you with your problem?
i'm sure that somebody already have the same problem as you do... so,
try searching for it in the general section
i can't help you with that, i have a green lens defy
best of luck

try doing what the guy above said
Questions go in the Q&A section
Did you do a full wipe from STOCK recovery prior to flashing your sbf? You MUST do a full wipe before you flash any sbf or you could bootloop. Reading your post it sounds like you can get to stock recovery (volume down +power) once you reach the triangle screen you describe press vol up, and vol down at the same time to get your menu and do a full wipe
Ok, brought it back to life!
First of all i want to thank all of you who wrote me in thread and private.
Second, yeah, i was pretty desperate mostly because i tried so many solutions, read so much and the thought that i was gonna empty the battery without finding a solution was really stressfull.
What did i miss? At step 6 what i should have done is press the volume up AND down at the same time to make the 3e Menu show up then wipe cache and everything and tadaaa... phone started.
Unfortunately it took me almost all night to figure out, read countless threads, googled like crazy till i found someone who posted the right and complete solution
Once again, many, many thanks guys
PS.
# espaciosalter20
i did several times with several images
# zyxwvut
i wanted to do a full wipe but the menu was not there, i thought that powering the phone with volume down pressed was enough to make the menu show up and do the wipe but unfortunately this was not the case... you had to press the volume up and down at the same time to make the 3e menu show up... stupid if u ask me... also not many ppl pointed this out in many tutorials/hints/threads so i had a hard time finding this piece of vital information.

Next time, please, make a full wipe ALWAYS before flashing... Yo can do that even in custom recovery (not need to do in stock all times, just when things go really mess up )

[q] my defy plus is not starting up!!!!!!

Hi,
I have Motorola Defy Plus,I had read that it is possible to update android from gingerbread 2.3.6 to jelly bean 4.2.2. So I decided to update my defy plus.I root my defy plus with sinit_2.3.apk
After rooting I able to go to bootloader where I first backup my phone. Then I wipe data to factory reset and then wipe cache. Then I install the zip file for jelly bean 4.2.2 and google apps from my sd card.
Then after rebooting,Now my phone is updated to jelly bean 4.2.2 . I m very happy.
But after some time I noticed that it is possible to call outgoing calls but its not possible to receive incoming calls. When anyone call me it says the user is busy.
So I decided to restore my defy plus to the original position
But when I reboot my phone and when blue led is blinked then I press vol. down key then enter to bootloader but it is different
When I press restore it is not showing that file which was I had Backup earlier.
Then I press Motorola stock recovery but a triangle type figure is appear and a android logo is appear in the middle of that triangle and my phone is stuck on that logo.
Then I pull my phone battery out and then in battery to the phone and restart.
Re-enter the bootloader, from the bootloader then wipe data to factory reset and wipe cache.
Now connect my phone to pc via usb cable. After that I choose option “mass storage……..dangerous” from that ,
Removable disk is appear in pc when I click ,it says format fist. Then I format it.now able to open it.Now I m copying my backup file that I was created to my sd card but suddenly my phone battery is low and my phone switch off.
After hard work to recharge my battery with external charger,I connect my battery to the phone which is fully charged. But now my phone is not starting up,I have neither see Motorola logo nor any bootloader screen
I already press vol. up + power button but nothing happened.I read that install Motorola device manager driver for usb and RSD Lite & Stock recovery file SBF File.
Then open RSD Lite, Now select that SBF File. Now connect your phone to pc via usb cable now RSD Lite shows phone is connected.I also seen that video on the You Tube.
But for me it is not working. When I connect my phone to pc via usb cable there is no status shown in RSD Lite that phone is connected.
My phone is not starting up now.
When I connect my phone to pc a White led is blinked once for a second then goes off…
What I do.Please Help Me!!!!!

This is even possible? I didn't know, I thought Defy was unbrickable due to 2ndBoot.

I thought that too ;o.
Did you try to put it into download mode ? (Power button + UP) , in the moto stock recovery if you don't see nothing , press the search button or VOL+ and VOL- at the same time.
Hold vol. up button an press power button....
If you can arrive a black screen
which shows a text with "battery OK
Ready to program"everything is prefect....
If not , you have formatted the internal disk this like you delete bios on an PC...........
Maybe repairable with an factory usb cable & the right software....

Can you tell me where i buy the Factory USB Cable?????
It doesn't matter which cable you are using (you can buy it from amazon/ebay , it depends from where are you from..) , if you can put the phone in download mode ( POWER BUTTON + VOL UP ) , your phone is saved . If not.. Maybe you can try to a gsm repair shop.

If you can't connect to USB in any way you bricked your defy....
Im sorry for you
The only thing, you can do, is to find anyone who can flash data to your emmc without using standard USB connection....
Maybe a mobile repair shop (for Motorola) could do this .
But I'm don't think so

[Q] Defy bricked. Wont turn on, only white led on pc

I had cm11 (or 10, not sure) installed for about a month now (back in december) .... Went on a trip, and when coming back my phone battery ran out at the airport somehow, but i had fully charged it and i was not out all day enough for it to run out fully... I take my phone home, not really giving it much importance, and i noticed it was stuck on the bootlogo.. so i went into recovery and tried to re-flash the rom and fix it, but when i was installing the ROM again, the phone shut off randomly (i heard that happened with a certain recovery menu software sometimes, i cant remember the name)... then the phone wouldn't charge and/or turn on, and when I connect it to the pc, nothing happens other than the white led coming on.. RSD won't recognize it...
So i found out i had to charge the battery manually, and used a Universal Charger... Still, no recognition by RSD Lite...
Finally, i found a way:
1. Open RSDLite
2. Connect phone (no battery on it)
3. While holding Power + Vol Up, put the battery in
4. RSD will recognize your phone!
Problem is, it recognizes my MB525 as "S Flash OMAP0360"
And when i try to flash a .sbf i used previously to recover my phone (had bricked it before by trying to change ROMs in a sloppy manner), it seems to flash smoothly, but when it's going to reboot the phone, the progress goes up to 100% and then asks me to reboot it manually.. I read somewhere that to fix that i should take the battery out, disconnect the phone, put it back in, and make RSD recognize it like i mentioned before...... and after RSDLite says flashing is PASSED, the phone still won't turn on... I have tried at least three times and gotten the same result... Help?
The SBF i am using (because it helped me save my phone before) is:
JORLA_U3_3.4.2_107-9_SIGNED_USAJORDMR1B25TIGCOLA01E.0R_JORLAFROTIGCOL A_P009_A002_M010_HWp3_WIG146037_Service1FF.sbf
EDIT: Also, i read somewhere that when all you get is the white led (when connecting to PC) it means that your battery is not charged enough for flashing.. ?
I don't know what to do?? I read that defy's are really hard to brick... But mine got bricked out of nowhere.. wtf?

Hey there. Well, if it's still flashable it ain't bricked. I've got my other one to not be recognized (broken bootloader), which is beyond usual repair. So, did you you flash some random SBF before the rescue one you're trying out now? There's a problem with previously flashed GingerBread or Defy+ SBF images. So it would be good to know, what was the SBF running before trying "JORLA_U3_3.4.2_107-9". Also according to http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=27 that is 2.2.1 and there's also a "Android 2.2.2 Blur_Version.34.4.802.MB525.Latam.en.01". Tried that as well?
Anyhow, if the phone is seen by RSDlite it actually powers on and is recoverable. If the screen is just staying black, then you probably tried a downgrade from a Gingerbread SBF and didn't watch out for the BL-version.
If it's a BL-version problem then this might help. Also there is a guide to unbrick. And yes, keep an eye out for the battery level. Best would be an external charger, as the phone does not charge. McGyver way should still work though.
If it shows a LED and is seen over USb, it's not dead (yet)

No, i have not flashed other SBF's ever... only CM roms but i did it through the phone itself, in recovery mode.. I'll try the 2.2.2 one you told me about and see how that works out!
EDIT: No luck, the phone stays at a black screen.. it wont even reboot when RSD is done flashing.. i have to take the battery out and put it in bootloader again for RSD to say it PASSED the flashing

Too bad Anyway, did you try 8. from here, that is
"
If you get " Please manually power up this phone " in RSD Lite pull battery out > put your battery back > reboot into stock recovery by holding Power button and Vol- button > Choose Wipe data/cache > Choose Reboot system now
"? Also holding Power and Vol-Down while inserting battery is said to work.
I wonder if there is an SBF that also flashes cache and userdata partitions...
Nope, it just stays black-screened.... It only works if i do VOL-UP for bootloader mode, but that doesnt help
Umm, as a shot into the blue: Did you try to reinstall the Defy drivers from Motorola? It seems that missing those hinder RSD lite from detecting the Phone as MB52x and instead just show the Processor identification, i.e. "S Flash OMAP3630"
Try dfp 231. The processor identification is correct( rsdlite has been set up properly).

Yeah, it worked also for the defy in this thread.
And just for reference the original thread with the hinted SBF:in post #4
"
WIIII i have successfull unbriked my defy with this rom

Basically had the same BL7-problem.

wtf, the phone flashed correctly and everything but the screen won't turn on.... The computer recognizes it as MB526 now, and i can touch the home button and stuff and it will vibrate like it used to when it worked... i can also make the ringtones play using the moto portal page... Everything works (except for calls) other than the fact that i still have a black screen... the screen just wont turn on... Also it said it had very little internal memory compared to what it had before (had at least 2 gb i think.. now not even one)
I had sent the phone over to fix, and they told me it was unfixable... Is it possible that the guy (it wasnt an official company) who "tried to fix it" simply took parts out of it ? -_- (if he had taken parts out of it im guessing the phone wouldnt turn on at all..?)
What can i do to turn the screen on??
EDIT: i flashed DEFYPLUS_U3_4.5.1-134_DFP-231_GR_SIGN_UCADEFYEMARAB1B80AA004.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNGIBRRTCEE_P022_A022_Service1FF.sbf
I couldnt find the one you posted there so i did the central europe one...

Umm, according to this thread it is supposed to be this one.
The GR vs CN maybe doesn't make a difference, but maybe the P022_A022 vs. P015_A030?
Doesn't a working phone portal allow for somehow to get logs/adb etc?
