Press both volume buttons on the screen with the android and exclamation mark. That'll take you to stock recovery where you need to wipe data and factory reset.
If you have to flash the sbf again, try using sbf_flash on Linux. It'll flash in times where RSD won't recognize your phone.
Linux Live\sbf_flash tut
sbf_flash binary is in attachments
Only use Defy 2nd-init for recovery
(and once its installed, steal /system/bootmenu/* and /system/bin/bootmenu from Defy CM9 from June 5th on up -- touch bootmenu is pretty awesome; replacing the bootmenu isn’t for the feint of heart.)
the only problem is i dont have linux i have windows 7
Use rsdlite sri I don't have a link on me

Had same type of problem on Friday. Followed this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1559109 now I'm back up and running.

I dual boot between the two
If you have a blank cd and a usb drive\sdcard you can just use a Linux Live environment -- you never install Linux at all -- and you can use sbf_flash from there.
RSD Lite version that works and tutorial
And since it hasn't been mentioned yet, holding volume up + power on boot access the boot recovery to flash sbf's. Just make sure you have at least 50% battery before flashing or you might get an actual brick.
What your dealing with is nothing more than a recovery screw up. I had the same problem last night installing touch recovery -- it wiped /bootmenu/ instead of installing to it. Solution is to flash sbf, reboot, wipe data/factory reset from stock recovery, reboot, eebluroffee at first screen, root, enable non market apps, Defy 2nd init flash something that's better than stock.
ok i install the motorola usb drivers and start up rsd lite but it does not regocogize my phone
yes i have it in bootloader mode
Did you install everything before plugging phone in?
Try uninstalling everything motorola related and reinstalling just the drivers....On a previous Win7 install nothing was recognized, but on a reinstall of the entire system it worked fine and still does. I still recommend the Linux way over RSD because it will flash your phone regardless, provided you can access the loader.
I still haven't gotten native tethering to work with Windows, but then again, I quit trying sometime around December or January.

This is for all those people who are having trouble flashing with RSDlite in Vista & WIndows 7.
If I am right, RSD lite does not seem to recognize the sbf file after you select it and instead the "start" button remains grayed out.
If that's the case, here the solution:
I had a similar problem and sucessfully used the command line parameters for RSDlite to force a flash. I managed to get a signed/unsigned firmware installed.
You need to copy the firmware you want to flash into the RSDlite directory in your program files folder.
Make sure you are in bootloader mode first.
Then, open command prompt and "cd" to the RSDlite directory
eg:
> cd C:\
> cd Program Files
> cd motorola
> cd RSDlite
>
now for the flashing type:
> SDL.exe -f xxxx.sbf -t 2
where xxxx.sbf is the firmware you are flashing to the phone.
flashing will begin shortly afterwards.
It worked for me, but in the end, show FAIL STATUS.

After several hours of messing with my brothers Bravo, I finally got it working by following your instructions.
Really: I'm speechlees man.
hard bricked my phone
hello. i'm looking for any help to this issue: i believe i hard bricked my bravo somehow. it was running one of the first MIUI rom for two or more years. but became slow and laggy thru last months. and the other day it just freezed while i was browsing the call log. no reaction to the pover button at all, had to take out the battery. now it gives no reaction to any combination of button presses ( power; vol up + power ; vol down + power), the only signal what see is white LED light when į connect the phone to the PC. When phone is connected to the pc freshly, and when i press Vol down + Power, Windows 7 releases "clink" sound and device manager tries to show that "Motorola USB Device" is connected, but quickly disapears with another Windows sound. RDS lite 5,0 doesnt recognize phone too.
Is there any chance to bring this phone alive? any advise will be appreciated.
p.s. english isn't my native. sorry for the mistakes

Not sure if this will help since I did not watch the video myself, but a quick Google search gave me a video describing how to take a Motorola USB cable and modify it to unbrick a phone. I did not watch the video yet so I don't know how relevant it is to your problem. But just by looking at the video preview it looks like the difficulty level may be pretty high... Here is the link:

If you turn it on while holding "dolume down" do you get the android+! screen? Some go into recovery if you touch the bottom right corner of the screen, but on some you have to hold volume up + down together. I had this problem today!
If you actually can't get to the screen with the android+! then I don't know what else you could do :-(

I really can not, no way to go to the screen with the robot android! he goes right on the logo motorola M!
can it be hardware problem?
1) Did you use the correct flasher? rsd4.9 with motorola driver installed properly.
2) If (1) not working, you could use motorola own service update from their site.

but no results!
don't worry about it, dude.
maybe you can try the way followed:
1.power off your defy;
2.remove the battery from the phone;
3.plug the usb cable into the phone without battery;
4.open RSD and chose one of the roms your listed, but 3.4.2-177-005 NORDIC prefered,
5.take the battery into your phone, now your can see the "connected" on RSD;
6.click the "start" button to flash;
7.wait the phone reboot completely, usually it'll reboot.
if not reboot, remove and on your battery, power on your phone, then press the "volume - and power" botton together, you can enter the robot screen, press volume up and down botton together, usually you can enter the recovery, then chose wipe 3 and 4, totally you can save your defy~~
Be sure to have enough battery while flashing..
Get the phone into bootloader (hold volume down when switch on) and flash an SBF like one from the list you've attached using RSD lite. Surely you have used RSD Lite before?

Try flashing nordic, if fails arabic, if fails, 2.3.3, if fails probably corrupt nand broken hardware.
Before and after every flash always try to access recovery (volume down) and WIPE. reboot and wait crossing fingers, if it fails to boot flash next sbf, try to go recovery + wipe; reboot, cross more fingers; if fails to boot try next sbf and repeat.
The reason for this is that you can flash a lower version but it wont boot, so you have to flash a higher and higher version until you get one that works.
I tried to help someone with this problem before to no avail!
Everyone who is saying just wipe in recovery, or just flash with RSD blah blah blah, need to understand that he CAN NOT access recovery and HE HAS flashed multiple roms using RSD 4.9, read the OP. Im convinced this is physical hardware failure or similar. We all know the drill to recover our precious defy's in the event of semi-brick ie: bootloop or corrupt code. However this is more than a semi-brick. We are talking about successful flashing and still no access to recovery and infinite M logo!
I walked more than one person with this problem through every known procedure to bring these phones back. Even using sbf_flash for linux doesn't work as this is the only way I flash anymore I don't bother with RSD anymore. The thing is it DOES FLASH SUCCESSFULLY just no recovery or boot!

OMG Exactly!!!! i have same problem and nobody seems to be able to tell me what to do, they keep saying same thing about trying various SBF's and Vol down + power method. No matter what SBF file I successfully flash with, i cannot get into boot recovery mode.
I have heard before from desperate users that they were able to revive their phone by flashing a full 2.3.4 sbf. This however comes with downsides of not being able to downgrade to froyo by flashing ANY froyo sbf's. There is a way to downgrade back to froyo but its a dirty method. Even after downgrade you can't just flash a sbf, you will always need to restore nandroid and flash fixed sbf
Hi, my milestone 2 bricked
my phone start on a black screen
does not show the logo of Milestone
no sign of anything
able to recover?
sorry my english...
Press camera, vol+down and power together - in this sequence and it will bring you into bootloader mode. Then install RSDLite on your PC, connect M2 via USB cable, download SBF from http://and-developers.com/sbf:milestone2 (if you had froyo, then froyo, if you had GB, then GB) and flash it via RSDLite.
You should have M2 drivers installed and do wipe cache/data after SBF flash (hold X on boot and then press @ or vol up+vol down together)
You must have some charge in battery also and keep in mind, that M2 will not charge when bricked, so don't waste your battery, or you will have to find other way to charge your battery for flashing.
I'll try and post after the response..
thanks you..
i have a universal mobile phone charger for battery.. will work
sorry my bad english rs
"Press camera, vol+down and power together - in this sequence and it will bring you into bootloader mode."
I pressed, but only screen in black appears
try press POWER + UP arrow... would have to enter bootloader mode...
The black screen itself is the bootloader mode.
RSDLite will recognize the phone in that state when you connect your phone to your PC via usb.
Just flash sbf from the link given by Anonymous_ depending on what you had before , Froyo or GB.
(If it reboots fine, skip the following. If bootloops, then do this.)
Once flashing is completed successfully, I guess you gonna have to wipe data coz I believe you might end in a bootloop or something similar.
To wipe data, Power On device holding the X button(from keyboard). You should be on a screen with green bot + '!' sign.
Press vol up + vol down at the point (For GB) or '@' (For Froyo). You will get a menu, select wipe data from there using 'Power' button.
Did you removed battery first?
I recommend this method:
1) remove battery
2) press and hold camera + vol down
3) reinsert battery with camera + vol down still pressed
4) wait 3 seconds - if the phone will not start in bootloader automatically, press power with camera + vol down still pressed.
If it still will not boot into bootloader, then try to do the same, but with RSDLite running and M2 connected via USB cable
And of course - be sure, you have charge in battery, you can charge it with that universal charger for sure...
EDIT: sahilarora should be right, sometimes bootloader is pure black (but I did not experinced this case) and sometimes you'll get some message about it on the screen... Try the above (connect it to pc and start RSDLite and try to have it recognised it) and if it will not help, you can try method in this post, I've described

Well, I did not mean that the bootloader screen is black. It normally has written in text bootloader version, battery OK, OK to program etc etc.
But in case your phone is not booting and all you only see is a black screen but you are sure that the phone is powered on, then you are most definitely 'already' in bootloader mode. RSDLite recognizes the phone in this state.
And you can use RSDLite from there on itself to flash an SBF.
after using the rsd lite... appeared "please manually power up this phone".."executed 100%"
on the phone the screen goes all black (without the motorola logo)
then I removed the battery
and pressed X + Power, but not turn on
That's strange. You should have been able to go to motorola recovery using 'Power on + X'.
Had you upgraded to GB somehow before you had this problem?
I guess what you are trying to do is flash Froyo over Euro gingerbread or LatAm gingerbread. If you had updated to GB using either OTA update or flashing a GB sbf, you can only flash an official Euro or Latin American GB release. So, please use an appropriate GB kernel based sbf.
I think I know the mistake I made
I had the CM9 is m2
then installed for the GB 2.3.4 Retail
and installed the MIUI 2.1.6..on top of the GB version
I noticed the crap I made
then the phone not turn on anymore
then upgraded to the 2.2 Froyo
after that is only the black screen
now I'm with another problem, the phone connected to the computer does not identify the drive for use the RSD lite
So now you can only flash one of the Euro GBs. I would recommend that you download UK GB.
Try getting into bootloader mode by Powering on pressing 'up arrow' along with it. Or another approach indicated earlier by Anonymous_. It is very important the RSDLite identifies it.
If it stays on black screen, then try to see RSDLite recognizes it or not. Ideally, RSDLite should. If it doesn't, then that might be a problem.
You can also try another version of RSDLite. May be 4.9 which was kind of the most used one at one point of time.
P.S. You can't go back to Froyo now. You have to flash a Gingerbread SBF, European or LatAM.
thanks, I'll try at home..
my problem, may be that the battery has finished..
I'll upload some more

Hi.
I'm having the same problem here (when I've tried to downgrade to froyo =/) and i have a couple of questions.
First: The black screen when you try to power up (or enter the bootloader) is the same black screen when the device is powered down?
Second: Is it really possible that my battery isn't charging when I left my Milestone 2 connected to pc via USB? (the led near the usb port on my device keeps on...)
Thanks in advance

Bootloader mode is a black screen with white weird text. It will say Bootloader and it's version on the top.
Do not waste battery, because your phone depends on a bootable kernel (which you don't have, since you flashed froyo) to charge the battery.
Tell me which android version you had, and which region your phone is from. (From where you bought it, or which carrier).
If you don't know, tell me which country you're in, and your type of keyboard.
I assume you already have the USB drivers and RSD Lite installed...

This is a bootloader screen I get, and it gives me no choices to arrow down.
Bootloader
D2.37
Code Corrupt
Battery Low -- flash
Cannot Program -- flash
This happened after an OTA update, and now I am new to this forum, and trying to get this phone back working, Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have adb loaded, and have used it to root, su with clockworkmod a CDMA Sprint phone to put into the Page Plus service network, so I have some experience - mostly willing to try just about anything.
The battery should be charged up.
I got this once, after leaving the phone sit for about two days, battery out.
Bootloader
D2.37
Code Corrupt
Battery OK
OK to Program
Connect USB
Data Cable
I mainly use this phone for VoIP service, but was eventually going to try to put Cyanogenmod 7 on it, and then this happened.
Any advice / help / pointers to somewhere, or something would be greatly appreciated.

if flash fails because of low battery you will need on of the following

Thank you, and another question for the droid 2
I can't seem to get the drivers to work, I've tried about everything but booting into XP mode - not sure how to do that, as I am on a Windows Vista machine. Any advice, or process for that? I've tried it as Admin, and also a User, but no progress. The drivers are loaded through executing the msi file, but when I plug the phone in the computer doesn't detect phone, and the drivers don't show up in device manager, either.
win 7 64bit?

Spare battery charger on the way!
Also, I ordered a new battery, the old one, was, well, old, and could not hold a charge long enough to get through the flashing step. Once I figured this out, I was able to flash the phone, and then perform a factory reset, and it is back to the original. It wouldn't take the flash for CM but the phone is rooted now.
Thank you for your help!
Was on 4.1.2 OTA (yeah I know dumb of me, but it did it overnight), rooted with TWRP all was fine untill I decided to power cycle and got stuck in a boot loop...
Booted to twrp...tried to recover from a back up, still boot loop....Cleared dalvik and all other caches, Still bootloop....factory reset, still no change...
Last resort was to flash using RSDlite v6.1.5 to VRZ_XT907_9.8.1Q-78-1_1FF.xml ...and i'm still bootlooping!!:crying: Now I've lost root, NO Custom recovery with a locked bootloader. I can't push anything through adb cuz bootlloop interrupts windows recognizing the phone and the drivers don't properly install while in Stock Recovery (I do have the latest drivers BTW)...and only sees it as 'MOT SINGLE ADB INTERFACE' while in fastboot.
Question is, what could still be causing it to bootloop?? Anyone know?.. and is there any way to get this fixed and/or get back root and a custom recovery??
At the end of my rope here! Need some guidance....
Alright Guys and Gals I solved the issue (even though I'm not sure how! LOL)
What I did (with simplified instructions)
1. Let it bootloop till the battery ran down...
2. recharged it up to 100%
3. opened it up while still off
4. disconnected battery cable for 5 secs
5. reconnected battery cable
6. started into boot menu (hold POWER and VOL UP & VOL DOWN together) and chose recovery (VOL DOWN to highlight recovery and VOL UP to select it)
7. While in recovery Hold VOL DOWN and tap VOL UP to get the Recovery Menu
8. Chose wipe cache ( VOL buttons to highlight, Power Button to select)
9. then chose wipe data/factory reset
10. rebooted into boot menu again
11. chose Factory option
*12. Held my breath :fingers-crossed:*
AND IT BOOTED!!!
Now just to be clear I am not even sure if it was one of these steps or the combination of all of them that got me off the Boot Loop, but I just thought I'd outline them just in case someone stumbles on the same problem I had. Also please note that all this was after I fastboot flashed the 4.1.2 (.78) firmware using RSDLite v6.1.5
Being stuck on on 4.1.2 (.78) Stock is alot better than being stuck in a Boot Loop at least, so I'm happy!
P.S: F.Y.I... I was getting stuck halfway through the boot animation (just about where the droid eye kinda thing closes up) so I could still recharge my Battery from a powered off state (why I had to let it run down to zero, as it was either that or open it up and manually disconnect the battery cable and I was feeling lazy.
Now I have another Logic Board which doesn't boot past the initial Motorola "M" Logo, and thus can't get into recovery or even charge from a powered down state (can only get into fastboot) even though I've successfully flash 4.1.1 to it TWICE!!

Do you know what build that logic board is... if its an older version use Matt's utility on it simply swap with your current one and have the joy of an unlocked device... first time I flashed (well almost every time I flash) 4.3 I get stuck on the boot logo and have to use Matt's utility to bring it to life again....

That was my initial thought but, Where on the board can I find that info? and doesn't matt's utility in essence perform a fastboot flash, same as RSDlite?? Would love to have an unlocked device or at the very least a working back up board in case of unforeseen accidents, but this one has me stumped...
It won't say it on the board you'll have to install it to the housing n digitizer n get it to boot... I think you can tell by the fast boot menu but I'm not sure what to look for.... n to be honest I have never used rsd I've always used one of Matt's utilities for all my moto devices he has saved several of my phones...

Utility doesnt seem to work for me for some reason, it just closes when i "hit any key to continue" even flashed it with rsd using the xml from matt's ultilty... Still no go.
It should be an older board though, i bought off ebay with a broken screen just mainly so i could get the pristine back housing off of it (lol) ... and that was in february.
The guy did say he'd dropped a wrench on it breaking the screen while workin on his car, guess it was a bigger wrench than i thought and it damaged the board too
EDIT:
UPDATED POST AT THE BOTTOM!
Hey guys,
flashed czechops CM 10.2 a while ago everything was running fine.
On Saturday i decided to let the battery drain completely to do a full recharge. That`s when the Problems started.
After booting the Phone up i was stuck in a Bootloop with the Cyanogenmod Logo turning around and around and around and so on.
Okay i thought let`s reboot and see what happens.
Still the same.
I then booted into recovery by holding the x button on the keyboard and power and then when the androind in the triangle showed up using vol + and vol - to get into recovery.
I then deleted the cache and rebooted again (No full wipe to factory default trying to avoid that).
After that the phone turned on saying Android is getting updated Updating Package x of y.
After its done its now stuck in Apps getting started.
After i found out to get to the Bootmenu i decided to check the Recovery Menu there.
I can choose between Motorola Stock Recovery (the normal one i already was on)
and Team Win Recovery.
So i choose Team Win Recovery and thought okay since its not working im gonna install the Update of czechops 10.2
Installing itself worked fine. But now im stuck in the same loops.
Currently im goind a Backup of the System with the Team Win Recovery in the hope i wont loose the data even if what im trying to avoid a full factory wipe.
What kinda poped in my eyes when i started the recovery was that it said E: Unable to locate '/boot' partition for backup.
Could this be the problem which is stopping the phone from booting correctly?
And if so how can i fix it?
Hope anyone can help me,
Kind Regards,
Invi
I had te same problem before doing a clean install.
I don't know why but, if you install the android 10.0 tezet and from there start the gapps, creating a account and installing your apps, you do not have problems to install the 10.2.
Good luck.

Thanks for the heads up jonas.
Unfortunately its too late its seems. My Milestone is just a stone now it seems.
After trying to install 10.2 12.03.14 and that not working correct after doing a full factory wipe i decided to install cm 11 from czechop.
Unfortunately it seems it failed.
My milestone just boots up and stops at the First Logo. No lights. No chance to get in any recovery mode except the normal one.
Bootloader was working some time but stopped cause the Battery is almost empty.
The Problem is i cant even load the Phone anymore cause as soon as i put it on a charger it boots up and wont get enough battery power to live for a few minutes.
So the only thing left working is the normal Android 3e Recovery. Hope i can do anything from there.
Don't give up.
Your problem it's normal, you fisrt need a global battery charger to recharge your battery.
After it, go to boot recovery, you must turn on the milestone holding " volume down + camera" or "volume up + camera", than you need to uses the RSD Lite to reflash your milestone 2.
Normaly, when do you came from another room, you stay in boot loop, so you need to entery in Miestone recovery, "x + volume down" than after it you do a factory reset. It will boot normaly after that.
To go to boot recovery, you must turn on.
Try harder.
(Guys, lets try to help a little)
Sorry about my poor english
I wont. Already ordered an global battery charger yesterday. In the mail from the store delivery is 7-10 Weekdays.
Good thing i have a second cellphone which i can use in the meantime.
i had a similar scenario

hi, I had a similar situation to that earlier today, in that I got to the situation where on boot up I got the Motorola logo then nothing else (I was trying to install C.M. 11 from 10.2 but when it went to install got a message E;// error - verification signature installation aborted), after major panic thinking I'd bricked my milestone, I tried starting the phone in bootloader mode (press camera, volume up and power buttons at the same time) which gives a black screen saying boot loader 70.13 and towards the bottom says boot menu, connect USB, then on your pc find program MOTOROLA SOFTWARE UPDATER (hope you've got it) open the program, it'll say connect a device plug your phone in and let it do it's stuff, takes about an hour (charge your battery using a desktop battery charger beforehand) and your phone will be returned to the stock Motorola rom but at least your phone isn't a brick and you can always start again trying cyanogenmod.
hope this helps

So i downloaded Motorola Software Updater and RSD Lite + Motorola Device Manager newest Version
Unfortunately my Milestone seems not to be recognized by either Software updater nor RSD Lite.
In the Device Manager S Flash OMAP3630 shows up and is recognized.
Im running Windows 8.1 x64 and on a second Computer Windows 7 x64
What tool can i use ander Linux? Maybe the Phone will be recognized there.
EDIT:
K found it. Doing it with Linux at the Moment. Its working.
Only need to Root it then and after that flash my old Files and hope they are working.
At least i have an old Backup i made from Tezet before going up to 10.2 which i made with Clockworkmod
Hope it will work and not be broken like the one i made with Team Win Recovery.
Anyone knows how i can change stuff in a Team Win Backup?

I did find it took a long time for the Motorola software updater (about 20 mins) to detect my milestone 2 (I'm using windows7 x64), I'm thinking the mistake I made when trying to upgrade to CM 11 was I didn't wipe data/cache before trying to install it

Hi mark,
well Windows popped up saying N/A
when it should show new Software.
It also couldnt recognize my Cellphone correctly it seemed.
But i flashed it with Linux anyways.
Flashing to tezet`s 10 worked also like a charm
and i could install my Backup i made in december before
updating to czechops 10.2.
Guess after i know what to do now i will try to update to cm11 now.

let us know how you get on as I'm tempted to try again (I do like how CM10 gets rid of all the un-necessary apps but gives you control of all the system parameters) but want to step up to CM11 without having the same problem as before.
