Tegra 3 Companion Core and Performance - Transformer TF300T General

I'm sure the Performance of the Tegra 3 5th core has been discussed before, but this video makes it really easy to understand.
Video on the Companion 5th core in the Tegra 3:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1qKdBX4-jc
The constant Wait messages and browser lag has had me thinking about how the companion core works. Watch the video. I get the impression that lag is a "Built in" feature of the Tegra 3.
It would seem that every time you stop doing something, like stop scrolling you get dumped back to the low power companion core. So it would make sense that there is always a lag when you start and stop doing things in the browser, or any other app for that matter, including the home screen interface.
I would think - continuous activity = no lag - high power cores in use
Intermittent activity = lag and slight delay while cores switch and "Ramp up"
May provide a little insight into the way the interface is responding and why this thing is so laggy at times.
I'm thinking it would be interesting to use an app (assuming there is one available like that shown in the video) and watching what the cores are doing when the annoying"Not responding, Wait" messages show up on this tablet.
Another observation: I don't remember getting any of these "wait" messages on my Tegra 2 devices. And tegra 2 has NO companion core.
So, one core foreward, and two steps back?
Next thought would be - is there a way to disable the companion core, or force use of the high power cores exclusively? I expect this would greatly speed up our tablets, with the trade off of lower battery life.
The video seems to imply that games use the high power cores exclusively - though perhaps this is just because of the constant activity/demand
I'm thinking that this might be another reason I might prefer a snapdragon or exynos processor which I assume have no "Handicap" core. I think I would prefer consistant performance and the absense of lag over slightly increased battery life.
** If anyone knows a CPU monitor that shows the companion core please let me know - so far the ones that I have looked at on the market appear to monitor the high performance cores only - though, I suppose I could just infer its activity, by the main cores being inactive....
Additional Intersting Info: The "Companion core is said to run at 500mhz. So if browsing is done with the companion core, thats pretty darn slow.
It is supposedly invisible to the Android Operating system. Managed apparently by Tegra 3 hardware itself.

When you use browse2ram, you get no wait- message but you are still using the companion core ... so i think you think wrong...

It`s great

I had this problem too when first using the device. It seems as I'd the Tegra 3 had problems ramping up from the low power companion core. This happened on every application I've had. Now it's been day 2 with the tablet and the lag completely went away. I've only had one full charge and I was playing sonic 4 episode 2 for a bit. Went to browser and it felt as smooth as butter.

I read something about tegra 3 needing to cache before it runs at its best. I can confirm at first i thought wtf is up with this piece of ****.. lol now I simply love it nothing lags everything is fast, battery lasts forever. With more use I give it the better performance ive noticed.

Very interesting. I haven't used my TF300 heavily lately, but I think I did notice that the wait message doesn't pop up as often.

Coming from G-Tablet

I'm having to return my gtablet because there is an issue with the sound and the battery. I bought it from someone on ebay so I can't get a replacement. I have to say apart from the sound going out for no reason whatsoever the gtablet was amazing. So fast and responsive. I played with the xoom today which I preordered from amazon. And I really love honeycomb's interface and that the buttons are on the screen but I can't say I'm at all impressed with the performance. I used the browser and it was so slow and laggy and wouldn't respond to my touches half the time. And I made sure to use the task manager to kill all other apps. Also the flash video performance was sub par compared to the gtablet.
Then I downloaded speedx 3d free and it ran no better that it does on my nexus one. Whereas on my gtablet it runs so buttery smooth at 60 fps. The xoom that I was playing with at best buy was on the newest update. I hope these r just software issues with honeycomb that get ironed out soon but I don't feel to confident for some reason. Something tells me I'm not going to see the kind of raw performance like I did with the gtablet, as nice as honeycomb is.
Where you running a custom rom on your G-tablet? That would explain its stability and speed.

Gtab runs froyo and a lower resolution. But has same processor. That explains the performance difference. HC is still new and is not optimized fully yet. At this point you're a early adopter and will deal with bugs and performance issues.

What was your opinion on the screen difference? 2.2 on a Tegra2 is like running XP on an i5.
If it's any consolation I have no problems with lag in general and SpeedX runs super. I only get a momentary delay here and there in certain apps, not worth complaining about.
I just got my Xoom on Friday and I am Very, Very impressed with the Speed and Smoothness of the device. I use Dolphin HD as my Browser and it runs just fine. No lag and pages load rather quickly (even while Wirelessly Tethered to my Rooted HTC EVO). I returned the iPad 2 I had and exchanged for the Xoom and have Zero regrets. While the iPad 2 is nice, to me it's just a blown up iPod Touch (I have a 32gb iPod Touch 3rd Gen) so I would know. The Xoom is an Amazing Tablet. I put 3 Blu-Ray movies on my Xoom already (Toy Story 3, MegaMind and Kung-Fu Panda) so the kids can watch movies while we are out and about. As far as Apps go, I have found plenty of Apps for the Xoom and they all look fine to me.

I've seen the same thing - not just in Quadrant / Nenamark but just with the naked eye. My guess is that it's either the higher resolution of the Xoom screen, or perhaps the HC Nvidia drivers are not that mature yet. Either way, the GTablet (and the Adam) seems speedier, overall.
The Xoom TFT screen is definitely better than the GTAB, however.

So let me ask a semi-evil question. You have enough money to buy either a WiFi Xoom or another G-TAB. Which would you get?
Add one more condition, whatever I get I will be "handing down" to someone in November as I plan to get a KalEl tablet when those come out about then (KalEl being the quad-core Tegra that nVidia has begun demoing)?
Thanks in advance!

Other than multi-tasking will the Quad core run any better than the Duo?
I have read that there is little difference between the i5 and i7 except for apps that specifically talk to the extra cores!

If those were the only two options, then a Xoom hands down. It's got a lot of problems (ie. missing microSD support, speed lag at the moment etc.) but it has a MUCH better screen and that is absolutely critical to me.
The reason why I write "the only options" is that I might consider a Tegra 2 IPS device, when they get released. Whenever that happens (maybe in a month?). As for KalEl, that's in the late summer / fall so it's really not on the radar, yet.
I think the Xoom Wifi $600 (or less?) option should be a decent product, especially once they shake out the bugs in Honeycomb.

I Think the Quad is supposed to be 5x Faster than the Dual. and that the GPU has 16 cores or somin. The Newer Tegra Nvidia chips Blow away the last.
You should have really not use task manager and kill apps. Because most of them will restart after being killed. So all the apps start at once will cause the gpu generates lots of power and the os may get unresponsive and laggy. So get rid of that damn task manager.

Java programs will immediately take advantage of all 4 cores since Java is naturally multithreaded.
Until these benchmarking apps are updated to take advantage of OpenGL 2.0 you're not going to see high scores on any Honeycomb tablet.
Well, I had considered the iPad 2, but I am trying to get away from supporting iOS at home. Particularly as ugly as the upgrade for the original iPad to the latest update went.
I would like to get something now since I believe the Tegra 2 IPS tablets you're referring to are likely to be more of a July timeframe, and will likely be quickly passed over by the KalEl chips.
For the person asking if the additional cores will make much difference - the current Tegra 2 is most comparable to an Intel Atom. And the programs and video performance on these tablets pretty much match that.
The KalEl is supposed to actually exceed Core 2 Duo speeds and capabilities. So in that sense we are talking about going from essentially a netbook to essentially a notebook in terms of performance. Heck that is why there are rumors of an iPad 3 in that same timeframe. Because once that generation of chips come out it is going to be a very open question whether you need anything more than a tablet and a bluetooth keyboard for anything that requires less than a true desktop experience.
My .02 worth of course
how much do you think these newer tablets will cost? same 600 dollar price range? I'd probably want to sell my wifi xoom and then buy a newer model rather than wait that long.

If you're talking the KalEl equipped tablets, I presume they will be in about the same range, with the current tablets discounted a little similar to what Apple did with the first generation iPads. That said, I expect there to be just limited availability over the holiday season with probably only one or two manufacturers shipping by Thanksgiving.
Of course there are already some component shortages due to the Japanese earthquake. One area where Apple has an advantage since they have pre-ourchased a lot of their supplies. So while they may get them later than planned, they usually are assured of getting them first, and at a fixed cost.
FWIW...
Always take your experience with a display model with a grain of salt. Unlike the fresh G tab that you unboxed yourself and handled/tweaked with care, the display Xoom has gone through hours upon hours of goobers and children wailing away at it, changing default settings, etc.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. Some parts of Dalvik (android's version of java), like the garbage collector, will take advantage of multiple cores. Android as an OS uses tons of threads, and will get snappier with more cores... but Android was written to explicitly use multiple threads.
What I'm saying is that apps won't use multiple cores unless the programmer DESIGNS them that way.

Galaxy Note: Best Gaming Droid

NOTE is one of best Gaming Android phone to date, IMO... i mean, 5" is most ideal for gaming IMO, controls on each side doesnt intrfere on the game play because of the screen size, Loudspeaker is loud, not to mention the AMOLED display... i was playing Shadowgun an hour ago, its just awesome...
Couldn't agree with you more.
I am having a similar experience.
Great phone & mini Tab.
i have a feeling that itll be the next HD2...
Strange that you mentioned it. I have an old HTC HD2 which I am keeping it.
It is a great phone and I am still using it for its GPS capability. Using Garmin and Papago GPS for local navigation. We have very detailed maps and POI for my country [supplied FOC by a very dedicated group of mappers called MFM].

I think that SE Xperia Play is better suited for games. It has a REAL joystick that is always with you.
I bought SonicCD and loaded it up on my Note. It works perfect and the Notes screen runs it beautifully. Then I loaded it up on my old Desire and, boy, was there a huge difference. The Notes screen definately won hands down.

it doesnt have a real analog stick. it uses a touch pad instead.
the xperia play design was good, but it was let down by the hardware. like really, 1ghz single core snapdragon with adreno 205... launching after their competitors release dual core phones with better gpus... and charging just as much as the dual core phones...
hopefully with sony ericcson being consumed by sony, it will lead to an xperia play2 with better internals.
gaming phones next year will be much more interesting. 28nm manufacturing means much more performance at much lower temps with better battery life. im keen on seeing tegra 3+ vs the quadcore 2.5ghz snap dragon...

Asphalt 6 is available for free in the Samsung App Market
It's a shame there's no good DS emulators around - the screen is almost exactly the size of the two DS screens, plus it has the stylus and the microphone...
Nonetheless the Note is the best mobile gaming experience I've had in twenty years of playing video games. The screen size is perfect, and so many games play so much better with the stylus. The battery lasts longer than my 3DS, and though I haven't got a Vita yet I imagine it's a similar situation there. MHL means I can play most games on large screens if I want. Android means I can emulate all my favourite old games in one convenient package. And the gaming ecosystem for Android is getting really great right now, most games are seeing release on the Market instead of just iOS. The Note is specced to be right at the forefront of that right now, hindered only (slightly) by its non-Tegra-ness.
Seriously, the gaming utility of this device alone justifies the purchase for me, not even considering its myriad other functions. And today Samsung announces that it's first in line for ICS! I know I'm ranting, but I just couldn't be happier with this phone.

thats the thing i found disappointing about the vita. the psp had the option of being connected to a TV via component out, yet the vita does not have hdmi. i mean sure, it does have dual touchpads which could make it a bit clunky, but i was really expecting a home console in your pocket. plus, im not happy that sony decided to disable the fourth core of the vita at the last moment. you cant advertise its a quad core when one of the cores is disabled...

Nexus 10 browser test

I have a Asus tf700 (infinity). I have been less than pleased with the browser experience. I would like to know how the Nexus 10 compares.
If any of you N10 owners could load the page below and post your experience, i would really appreciate it.

Wait for the page to completely load then and start scrolling. Does the browser keep up with your scrolling? If so how fast can you scroll?
My tf700 cannot keep up with anything more than an a really slow scroll. My laptop has no problem keeping up with any scroll speed.

Nope. Doesn't keep up at all using AOSP browser. What a ginormous webpage though.
I would just like to pint out that a laptop and a tablet are VERY different things. The performance gap is quite large. THink of it like this: Have you seen benchmarks for an Intel Atom processor vs say, a Core 2 Duo? A Core2 in itself is a quite old processor and slow compared to any modern processor already, yet the Core 2 smashes the Atom in performance. Now look at the Atom vs the newest, latest and greatest ARM A15. They are about tied overall, with the A15 coming out on top by a little bit in the more common end-user tasks. So if the A15 barely holds its own against an incredibly slow Intel processor, how do you expect a tablet to keep up with a laptop that has an actual "desktop grade" processor in it?

As much as I want to support your argument, I'm currently typing this on an old Intel Atom processor (which the A15 destroys). I opened that web page and it scrolls perfectly fine at any speed.

It's hard to judge what your poor experience is without an example. In my opinion the AOSP browser on my N10 keeps up great at a skim-able scrolling pace (say you're scrolling through 1-2 screens worth of posts at a time).
If you're just flicking down the page as fast as you can at an un-viewable pace then yeah the browser goes mostly blank during the scrolling but then is pretty snappy to display the current page once it arrives at the scroll destination.
Dolphin w/ Jetpack can inconsistently keep up with farther scrolls but it's with low res image until it fully catches up.

I'm currently rooted but running stock ROM and chrome. I can scroll much faster than I can possibly read and it seems pretty smooth. Having owned the Infinity prior to this device, I understand how poorly the ASUS tablet browses the web. The performance of Chrome is night and day between these two tablets. I owned my infinity for two months and nothing I did ever made web browsing as enjoyable as it is for me on the Nexus 10.

If the n10 doesn't have problems, well then its just one more reason to switch.

Oh wow. Chrome actually does something right. I just tested the webpage with Chrome and while you do see it rendering the fonts, it does it before you can actually read it (basically before it stops scrolling). Interesting!
It's completely readable with Chrome at its fastest scrolling (the scrolling is kind of slow compared to AOSP browser though).
Can't comment on nexus 10 but on the 7 I can scroll very quickly with stock chrome. Only goes blank if I start flicking through nonstop, but for scrolling the browser kept up at a pace far above "skimming through" speed. So I would imagine the 10 would provide an least an equal experience using same browser.

I can confirm that about Chrome as well. It does limit scrolling pace vs the other browsers (still faster than you could interpret) but it does keep the text displayed at all times at a lower resolution. It converts to the beautiful crispness quickly at scroll destination.

As much as I want to support your argument, I'm currently typing this on an old Intel Atom processor (which the A15 destroys). I opened that web page and it scrolls perfectly fine at any speed.

It's cool. It's understandable which is why I said "As much as I want to support your argument."
AOSP browser sucks at something that Chrome doesn't. I'm thinking it has to do with HTML5. Anyway, obviously there isn't a perfect browser out there, but I would recommend Chrome which isn't THAT bad as people say it is if you do get the N10. Judging from how well it loaded that page, it's doing something right.
Can scroll as fast as possible @60fps and no checker boarding on Dolphin Beta. On Chrome scrolling is perfect for all but the fastest scrolling. Both perform much better on the Nexus 10 than they did on my infinity.

Ouya Benchmarks

I just found a benchmark (antutu) of the dev console while I was browsing the web and the CPU looks pretty decent, but sadly the gpu was left untested. (Link to this person's Imgur: http://imgur.com/a/4welz )
It scores about the same as the infinity though, so nothing really impressive.
Infinity scores: http://www.antutu.com/view.shtml?id=126
It's somewhat disappointing that they couldn't up the clock speed a bit more considering it has fan and no power restraints, but perhaps the tegra 3 doesn't perform well at those speeds.
=]
Good find looks like we are going to have quite the decent system on our hands
Hope they do a revision with tegra 5 or with sgx next time around.

Yeah, I just don't see the incentive to buy if it doesn't perform better than a smartphone. I feel like that majority of their market will already have a phone or tablet that performs similar to or better than this. Hopefully the gpu is overclocked because if it isn't than I see almost no reason for having a fan and heat sink Lol, perhaps it will come in handy with overclocking later.

If you already have a fast smartphone or tablet you'd be better off getting a controller like the Moga Pro, sixaxis, or similar instead and taht HDMI cable. This thing is very cheap so it may be worth it for those that want a portable emulator.
I have noticed that watching games like Need for Speed Most Wanted and Deadtrigger the games are not as smooth as on my Excite 7.7, TF300 or even the GS3 (Dual Snap version). I thought it was a Youtube frame rate issue, but notice the lack of smoothness with all 3D game videos I have seen when compared to my other devices. Is this an output issue to larger displays? Seems it would not be, but must be some reason. I output the Excite via HDMI and as smooth as on the device display.
Ironic Need for Speed is a game being shown, since that one game takes up one third of the storage space (It is 2GB counting user data).

Stuttering, lag on internet

Does anyone encounter any serious stuttering or lag when they are scrolling a page on the internet. If anyone has any tips on how to fix it than I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm up to date so I'm hoping there is a quick fix I can do.

Depending on the web page, it doesn't scroll as smoothly as an iPad if thats what you were hoping for. But this is the case I find with most android devices. Although, it has been reported that rooting the device and turning off, some of the Samsung Bloatware such as Knox applications, improves it significantly. I personally won't do that because I do like some of the samsung apps and don't want to mess up the tablet's S-Pen functionality, even though the rooting supposedly doesn't mess with that.
A friend of mine recently bought the wifi version and together with my lte variant we started doing some everyday performance comparisons.
One of the things we noted immediately was the stuttering when scrolling in the browser or when pulling down the notification bar. It was nonexistent in the wifi version , but the lte version (even though rooted and free of bloatware) was constantly stuttering. I just hope it was the effect of the performance updates the wifi version received, else I have to say the exynos is superior. What do I want with a snapdragon that can't even handle smooth scrolling..?

Thats surprising as I thought for sure the snapdragon would be superior. I have read the speed comparison tests and it gets better benchmarks than the wifi version. The only surprise down the road is the rumored patch that samsung is working on that will allow all eight cores to work simultaneously together which would make the enynos version faster.

My device is the wifi version. Yet still horrible choppiness, stuttering, lagging when I scroll. It is starting to feel like a game breaker to me which would be ashame because the S pen feature is the most wonderfully polished feature ever. I'm a student of course though.

I find it really curious though that with 3 gigs of ram and the type of processor this device has that it shouldn't be running as smoothly as the ipad. I mean spec wise this thing is a monster. Is it just bad software optimization? I'm also afraid of rooting because I've never done it and the term is pretty new to me. I know I'm a noob

pretty bad when you have to do something drastic and invalidate your warranty on a £450 tablet just to get it to work properly...

Are you using the stock browser? I'm using Dolphin HD. I also downloaded Flash. I found that switching flash to on demand vs always on seemed to help. I occasionally get a slight freeze or crash but overall I'm pretty happy with the Web browsing.

I've used puffin, chrome, and stock. In fact, the stock browser has the least issue. Also, has anyone noticed that youtube videos that say HD don't look very good. Sorry, it's my first time with a tablet.

Where did you get the flash from..adobe's site says that flash isn't supported anymore since on all devices after july 15th i believe. if you could provide that link it would be great..thx

To be honest, I believe this might be an issue with youtube. I noticed on my note 2014 that I'm only able to play 720p youtube videos. I've tried Tubemate as well as other 3rd party youtube apps that allow you to download videos and I never get any options above 720p quality. Why google/youtube would impose this restriction I have no idea.
The problem with this is that on a tablet with 2560x1600 resolution, content shot at 1280x720 resolution can look less than impressive. However, when you get a hold of quality 1080p content the screen is downright amazing.

I already think this tablet gets way too hot for doing normal stuff. I'm not touching octa even if somebody figures out how to hack it. It would probably melt my precious plastic leather.
I'll patiently wait for Samsung to optimize the software. I know this hardware is capable enough, damn it. It's a freaking pull down. That can't be that intensive as to bring a 1.9GHz quadcore to its knees unless somebody coded it wrong.
I think performance is decent enough for this tablet without the octa patch. That is once you tinker with it and optimize everything. My rooted, customized galaxy s3 runs smoother than the beast of a note sometimes. But anyway, that's the fun part.
As for lag or stutter, I do get it, but I think after rooting and cleaning up Samsung's touchwiz, it will get much better.

It wouldn't make it faster anyways....it would just increase battery life as the four cores that become available to you when you need high performance and have high cpu load is the slow, low speed, but power efficient chips. This is with the rumored patch of course. If you already have the a15 based chips all on and ruining at max freq then you will get nothing g, or next to nothing, from turning on 4 lower power ones.
It would be like driving a Ferrari 150mph down a race track and saying you are going to give yourself a speed boost by pushing with your feet....just ain't gonna happen
But in the case of the exynos, you will at least have the option of saving fuel (battery power) by pushing with your feet (using the low power cores) so it would be nice, but it's also been stated by mire than a few people, not sure how reliable these sources are but it's been said by mire than a couple sources, that there will be no patch for the note 3 or the note 10.1 2014 as this functionality will be savedfor a next generation device. Sad but also makes a little sense as these current devices are already basically top of the line and best I'm class, or at least right up there, as far as hardware specs go. Software may not be considered top notch by all but that isn't the point here as if these devices were patched or the functionality was released on the next generation, they both will still come with touch wiz software and thus the software part of it is a moot point. The point is, with or without this functionality, the people who would want to buy it are not concerned about it having touchwiz and thus they are getting the top end device either way. Why would Samsung push this generation device that much farther ahead when they still have a top end device and can save that "trick" for the next iteration....
/end rant
