[ TIP ]Less black clipping and other screen issues! - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

I have one of those GNotes with a good screen...(not every device is the same, due to Samsung's horrible production quality control...).
The only problem I WAS having was black clipping in a few videos with dark scenes..
So I got that Screen Adjuster App(, set the RED to +3 and contrast to -16 within the app, and....
VOILÁ !
Many thanks to the user NOTEMATE for the tip and settings...and also for the developer of Screen Adjuste app off course
No more black clipping fro me, not even on that Rusty Nails clip !!!
Happy user here

I have another solution, for the people had lag experienced with screen adjuster app
you can download on play store "FILTER YOUR SCREEN"
Im not experienced any lag problem with this app
and make a filter with this value :
Alpha = 7 (set between 6-9)
red = 245
Green = 235
blue = 255
(or you can set all RGB to 255)
turn ON the filter and the black clipping is fix, at least on my note
for the better color, we can set the screen mode to "dynamic" on display setting
Click to collapse
Little note: On "Filter your screen" app there is still the same side effect of the "Screen adjuster" app which is that you can't hit the "install" button when trying to install apps..... But just disable filter and the button is active again.

EDIT 1 (30/06) : As I said not every GNote is the same, so you can always try playing with the settings a little more in order to find the right balance between deep and washed blacks and no clipping..
It also seems to be that some players help even a bit more:
noteworthy said:
Using the screen adjuster app,my threshold going from deep black to grey is at 10 contrast setting. At 9 I still get deep blacks. At 10 it suddenly drops off to grey.
A setting of 9 improves most videos with the exception of the most serious black clipping ones where I have to use 10 or above but blacks become grey.
Using Mobo or MX video player improves black clipping further.

Also try using screen adjuster app on demand only, to avoid filter side effects (read some posts on this thread) .Disabling it within the app is, IMO, not enough; Force stop it on /Settings /Applications /Running apps.

Thanks for your tip, but it really screw up the true blackness... Can't see how it would look nice to have a greyish/redish black instead of true black and with some 'clippings' on lower quality clips.

For you guys with clipping, what from are you on?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

Yeah one of the best things I thought about AMOLED is the black levels, but for me anyway this fix at least makes videos watchable.
Is there any point returning and getting replacement?
It seems like everyone has black clipping issues.
---------- Post added at 05:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:18 PM ----------
Not sure what you mean spyder

Dude this is awesome..even without the red adjustment, just adjusting the contrast alone works miracles for the black clipping issue...I mean you don't get our true black..but now all videos are watchable......I say friggin awesome! ! ! !

Sorry, meant what rom are you on... I started on kka which had extreme clipping problems, then eventually landed on lc1 which pretty much corrected the: issue. Just wondering if you guys are still on old gb's?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

I was on GB, now ICS, looks exactly same
I think it is hardware problem

Try mobo player, I've had no clipping issues since lc1

Guess it's ok..
Mine also fixed, but contrast had to go up to -56. No issues with clipping now but blacks look washed. But that's fine, better than before.

Thanks for this tip. Mine worked without needing to go Red +3.
Blacks are a touch washed out but the clipping was so annoying... and now it's gone!

Once again, not every Samsung device , not every GNote, is the same... unfortunately .
Mine got a good screen, only issue was some clipping in some videos.
This tip from this thread solved the issue and blacks don't even look washed ...
But that's on MY device.. Blacks can still look washed in other devices or... this app + settings wont even help at all..
If you not satisfied with the device, and/or even suspect a hardware problem, return or replace it.
For you is enough to know that there are GNotes out there with a good screen.
I am glad that this tip is helping at least some users .
If it doesn't help you, just move on...
.

Now, I play this video in my Note:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoxUiqUpkw4
I didn't use the screen adjuster App and I had not problems at all .

Wow...this is the best tip of the year so far....
Fixed my phone with only setting the contrast to -12.
Wish i can give you 2 thanks!

Just a quick note, this works similar to screen filter - so you will need to turn it off to install new programs. Otherwise the install button is not clickable.

Flawless!
Thank you!

Nexus 7 Backlight Flicker?

Does anyone else have this problem with their nexus 7? I just got my nexus 7 today but I noticed that the backlight seems to flicker randomly
It doesn't look like much in the video but it is very noticeable and gets annoying when you're reading an ebook like i was.. Here's a video showing the problem.(It's near the end)
VIDEO LINK: h**p://db.tt/28eD0NLk (It happens around 9 second in) (change ** into tt)
For whatever reason this forum would not post a video link to show the problem.. for those who wants to know what it looks like please PM me..
But basically the screen flickers randomly ..
Is this a software problem? Should I go back and get it exchanged?

I havn't tried it yet..do we know if it's a hardware problem or software?
I just got it today so I can still return it if it turns out to be hardware
We really dunno at this point, but we are speculating software since both HTC One X and TF300 had similar problems and were fixed with firmware updates. Also someone switched it three times and all of them had this issue. Also try to run the screen in a pitch black room and tell me if the screen flicker is there. I may have a theory but need some other people to see if their units are behaving the same way as mine.
You can still post the link when you alter it a bit, insert a few *** into it, for example.
I turned mine on as soon as I got hold of it, no flicker, managed to go through and set up things, powered off and left to charged.
Coming back to it the screen would appear to turn on and off randomly, I thought it could be an app controlling a proximity sensor (I have one on my phone and I was EXTREMELY tired!), when I took it into the light there was no change.
I found that shaking it would help it flicker on and off at all intervals but didn't fix it. In the end I just started pushing random areas on the back, just before the issue went away I pressed around the bottom left quarter of mine and haven't had an issue since!
Glad I wasn't the only one with the problem though and would love to actually find out what it was.
Hope this helps!

Try this video,

it is using google map and you can see the constant flickering.. It doesn't look very severe in the video but it is actually very noticeable and annoying
I have the same issue with mine. It only seems noticeable when I have the brightness set to the lowest setting and on a page that is predominately white. I don't think it's the proximity sensor though, because it happens both when I set it manually to the lowest setting and when I'm in the dark and the tablet sets the brightness all the way down itself. Hope the next update fixed this, because it's really annoying!

I first noticed this flicker in a darkened room, so yes, it is definitely something going on. I'll try disabling auto-brightness to see if that matters.

I noticed a flickering in chrome yesterday. But only in chrome and only while the page is rendering after it fully renders no more flickering.
Everyone turn off wifi and I guarantee it will go away. It happens when using wifi which makes it hard to believe that a software update can fix it.

Same here. I sent it back. Ordered a new one a couple of weeks later from another place, same issue.
There are many articles and threads about this problem, but unfortunately Google and ASUS seem to ignore it. And even here on xda, people get defensive about their Nexus 7 and downplays the problem, attacks DisplayMate for scientifically illustrating the problem etc.
It annoys the hell out of me because I _want_ to love the Nexus 7, I _want_ to _want_ to keep it. It has great hardware, great software and even the IPS screen is great, but unfortunately the end result is a display that is seriously miscalibrated. The simplest calibration tests of black level, shadow detail, white crush and saturation and intensity (especially of the green primary) shows the major issues. Worst, it is obvious in daily use all the time.
I probably will end up sending this second Nexus 7 back as well and buy something with a half-decent visual experience.

I already have PRISM disabled. It helps a tiny bit but does not begin to solve the problem at all. Gamma, white crush, green saturation and intensity, contrast etc. still looks like something from 5+ years ago.
And there are a billion threads about this on the internet. I wish Google would take it serious, but...

XPERIA Z Screen Differences.

Hey all,
Just wanted to get a quick opinion from everyone here about the Sony Xperia Z screen.
There has obviously been a large discussion on the internet about the different quality Xperia screens and today I managed to identify first hand what an arguably good Z screen locks like in comparison to a bad one ,at least for my tastes. One device has a horrid reflection effect in a dark environment which left me wanting while another unit has better contrast all round with higher saturation.
What is everyone's experience and likes dislikes with the Xperia Z screen? I remember the apple screens when you use to go to the apple store and notice your screen has a yellowish tint in comparison to the same model on display which ticked me right of.
I want to close this display discussion once and for all so we know what the deal is. Are there really bad screens and good screens and what are the differences? I think there are and I stated my opinion above.

I just mentioned that you should switch brightness to 50% so you can level the comparison field without your phone actually changing the brightness and changing results. Bravia engine should probably stay off if you don't like it, personal preference really. as for the auto brightness I recommend keeping it on, it is the first ever device that I have left this feature on since it does such a good job with it! will probably save some battery as well most times.
So does this mean the video looked alright?

The bravia engine, tbh I can't see any difference with photos, only with videos things seem so dark that you can't watch anything properly. So I guess I'll only turn it off when I am watching videos. They should have an option to let you have it on for photos & off for videos
But yes switching bravia off worked the videos perfectly thank you

It's because of the viewing angles, if you look at the beginning the European version actually looks more vibrant. The thing is that a slight tilt already makes a small difference the phones are recorded from different angles relative to the camera. Since you don't see any difference when viewing the screen head on and the difference in view angles are really minor I think it is just the positioning of the phones relative to the camera. Also because in the first part the European looks slightly better. If you look at the screen bottom up it tens to be slightly more blue with gives it slightly more vibrancy if you look top down it gives a bit more yellow causing white to be slightly yellow and thus has a tiny effect on contrast

calibrate the XZ screen for vibrant color

We all know that some of the color looks washed when we watch in a diff angle , also the head on looks sometimes may not look great since BE2 is not applied all time .

If you just want to deal with the view angle problem, set the system brightness higher (80% or higher), and set the brightness of the screen adjuster to 50%~70%, nothing else. Then the view angle will be amazing, but you will also find very little blue tint when displaying white color

Everyone does its easily visible when the brightness is low and you're on chrome or anything for that matter even YouTube. If you bring the keyboard up you can see a color shift I'm the browser and if you are playing a YouTube video through the app you can see a color shift when you press on the screen while a video is being played. It's quite annoying but clearly a touchwiz thing. You can't even turn it off.

Actually, I just started noticing this with certain downloaded keyboards as well. I don't remember it happening with the stock keyboard, but I REALLY notice it while using Kii Keyboard in certain apps, but only darkly-themed apps. It's less noticeable with bright backgrounds.
